Arrived at Hidden Villa early afternoon in the hills of Los Altos, California. Got settled and visited with the animals. It's Spring and a lot of the animals have their young tagging along. Met with the other volunteers and enjoyed a great evening together.

Heifer Learning Center at Hidden Villa Coming soon to California!
In 2011, Heifer International Learning Center at Hidden Villa will provide educational programs that promote sustainable solutions to global hunger, poverty and environmental degradation.

The ten acre campus will be located at Hidden Villa, a nonprofit environmental education center in Los Altos Hills, California (18 miles west of San Jose). Since 1945, Hidden Villa has provided learning opportunities to inspire a sustainable future.

The new center will be operated by Heifer staff and will feature Heifer's Global Village programs, a unique educational tool used by Heifer that allows participants to live the lessons and cultures of Heifer’s project partners by replicating living conditions in their countries.

It's Better to Give Than Receive

This past Christmas, my two sons, along with five cousins, voted to pool their money to buy chickens and goats through Heifer International, in lieu of exchanging presents among themselves. Heifer International (and other similar charitable organizations) provides livestock to communities around the world struggling with hunger and poverty. The chickens and goats will provide eggs, cheese and milk to under-nourished families. What isn't eaten can be sold to others, which brings about self-reliance and sustainability.

Before you pick up the phone to call the Nobel Prize committee, I should tell you that while we as parents of these kids feel proud, and give them due credit for actually following-through with the humanitarian pact made around the Thanksgiving dinner table, I must inform you that the idea wasn't hatched entirely by a group of six- to 12-year-olds.

I can't tell you which of the parents on my wife's side had the initial idea to participate in Heifer International, but once the idea was enthusiastically planted in the kids' brains, they began to feel quite good about their decision, and it just seemed to grow from there.

The notion of giving, in exchange for getting, did come home to roostwhen, on Christmas morning, there appeared an amount of unoccupied space beneath Grandma and Grandpa's Christmas tree. I closely observed the children while they played near the tree in the living room, looking for a furtive glance, or a facial tic, that might betray regret for signing onto the Heifer International plan. I was pleasantly surprised to witness only one child stare beneath the tree, shake his head and mutter, "I'm never gonna do that again for Christmas."

To a seven-year-old boy, it must take a fair amount of convincing of himself to override the idea you've made a regrettable decision and essentially gypped yourself out of oodles of presents. Instead of a Nintendo DS for Christmas, he "got" half a dozen chickens. And on top of that, he couldn't even keep them.

Kids nowadays must be a lot smarter and far more aware of the world than we were growing up. The only clear memories I have from being seven-years-old are that Casey Jones (the phony railroad engineer on TV) was the coolest human being on earth, and spending a fair amount of time wondering why every one of my 12-inch Army action figures were all named Joe. If you were running a dangerous clandestine mission, it'd be pretty confusing if every commando in your unit had the same name. I had visions of a one-foot-tall platoon sergeant, somewhere in a dark Peruvian jungle, removing a stubby cigar from the corner of his mouth and whispering, "Hey, Joe." All of the soldiers would respond in unison: "WHAT?!" You see what I mean? That would give away their position for sure.

And how was it they all had the exact same scar on their right cheek? Seriously, those were things I thought about. Like an empty conch shell, you could've held my head up to your ear and heard the ocean.

I honestly doubt my brother and I would've gone along willingly with the Heifer International idea when we were kids, if in fact any organization like that even existed back then. I know it would've been a tough sell to sacrifice our own presents in order to help people halfway around the world. We didn't think that deeply about world issues. Okay, maybe that isn't a valid statement. Maybe I should say that, 40 years ago, folks didn't think along the same global lines that many do today.

The practice of giving is something we need to learn from an early age. As parents, it is our job to plant the seed, the spirit of giving, in our children. Does it sometimes run counter to what we'd really like to do with our time and money? Yes it does. But once we begin to give, and more importantly, if we give often enough, it becomes something of a habit.

There is a philosophy that calls for "less me, and more we." I like that simple statement. The Internet and 24-hour newscasts instantly bring the world into our living rooms. The spinning orb we all inhabit and share is indeed becoming a much smaller place. A decision to not lend a hand to others in desperate need is becoming harder and harder to justify.

We are celebrating our one-year anniversary!

Last February, Heifer International supporters and volunteers in the Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington area gathered together to reconnect and revitalize the Heifer Portland Volunteer group. In one year we've grown our network and educated our community about hunger and poverty beyond our expectations. We've created the Heifer Portland blog and reached out to our community via Twitter, Facebook, and other social media networks. We've hosted booths at several Farmers Markets in the Portland metro area, participated in many sustainable living festivals, and was the featured nonprofit organization at the 2009 Maryhill Winery Summer Concert events (which raised $10,000 for Heifer International).

To celebrate our successes we are giving away FREE t-shirts to our volunteers at the upcoming volunteer meeting.

13-year old Inspires with "Cards for Cows" to End Hunger

A couple months ago I wrote a post about 13-year old Zack Meskell and his "Cards for Cows" business (click here). He started "Cards for Cows" when he was 8-years old to raise money for Heifer International. Five years later, Zack has single-handedly raised close to $7000. Amazing!

Since sharing his story on the Heifer Portland Blog, Zack has been very busy (Thanks to you). Orders for "Cards for Cows" have been flooding his inbox. Normally a one-man operation, he had to recruit his siblings to help fill the orders.

What makes Zack so special is his personality. His heart and spirit shines far greater than his age. Zack is a true inspiration and we are proud to have him as part of our Heifer Portland volunteer team.

7-year old Girl Raises $500 for Heifer International

Kids are amazing. Seriously. They continue to inspire me with their will and determination to accomplish things we adults can only dream of doing.

Take for example, Charile Simpson, a 7-year old boy who raised over a quarter of a million dollars in just a few days for the Haiti Relief Fund. All he wanted to do was raise $1000 for the Haiti earthquake victims with a 5-mile bike ride-a-long around his local park (watch video here).

Zack Meskell, started "Cards for Cows" when he was 8-years old, has raised close to $6,000 for Heifer International (and continues to raise more).

Simply astonishing.

Here's another young hero who took matters into her own hands.

Meet 7-year old Sophie. She had a bake sale at her church and raised $500 for Heifer International. Here's what her mom said:

My daughter Sophie was asked by her first grade teachers to participate in a service project of her choice/her creation. Her teachers challenged the children to create projects where the fruits of their work would benefit people in a context meaningful to them. Sophie chose to do a service project benefitting Heifer International. Her goal was to raise enough money to buy a cow for a family in Africa.

Good news! She met her goal. She raised $500 through the combination of a big bake sale (held at our church, Trinity Episcopal) and the donations of friends and family.

Thank you Sophie for your donation. You are truly inspirational.

Have you ever attempted to raise chickens yourself? Bread, beer, fruits and vegetables all taste noticeably better when fresh. Well eggs do too! For Patrick and Holly, they were already true believers having raised chickens before. This time they wanted to raise more chickens than ever before--not just for themselves but also to sell to others. Through serendipity and the community coming together, they were able to pull together a team of 14 people to take care of 30 chickens to form Eastside Egg Co-op, along with the help of a Heifer International grant at the nonprofit education-based Zenger Farm.

Heifer International issues appeal to aid Haiti earthquake victims Aid will follow first-responders to help families rebuild lives, livelihoods
Heifer International is issuing an emergency appeal for funds to help families in Haiti recover and restore their lives in the wake of the catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the tiny Caribbean nation on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010.
“Heifer is by no means a traditional first responder,” said Steve Denne, chief operating officer of the global hunger and poverty organization, “but we have projects and partner families in Haiti who likely have lost everything, and now, with this devastation, the need is even greater than before. This appeal will help us help our current families begin to rebuild their lives, and provide the chance to help even more families recover from this devastating blow.”
The massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti was the strongest to hit the country in 200 years and was felt as far away as Cuba. The quake brought down buildings including the presidential palace, hotels, a hospital, and the UN headquarters in the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince
“It's really a catastrophe of major proportions,” Haiti's ambassador to the United States, Raymond Alcide Joseph, told CNN.
Heifer International has worked in Haiti for 10 years, and currently has 16 projects under way with more than 16,000 families and several farmer associations. The projects in Haiti, which are scattered around the country, with none close to Port-au-Prince, range from training in sustainable farming and crop diversity to gifts of livestock, seeds, trees and grains to training in nutrition, aquaculture and fish production.
Heifer International has seven employees in Haiti, with offices in Cap-Haitien in the north and Les Cayes in the south. The epicenter of the earthquake was near the capital of Port-au-Prince, where Heifer’s offices had been located until June 2009.
At the time of this writing, there has been little contact with Heifer staff or partners in Haiti, though efforts continue. “Our thoughts are with them, and we are preparing to respond with the most appropriate and most needed help we can,” said Denne. “This is a country that even in the best of times faces hardships most of us cannot imagine.
“We, all of us, have an obligation—a duty—to help any way we can.”
Funds raised in this appeal will be used in the recovery and rebuilding effort in Haiti in the wake of the earthquake. Any funds that exceed the level needed to provide relief in this rebuilding effort will go toward the disaster relief fund and for the entire mission of Heifer International.

Heifer Haiti Update: Good News!

Heifer International has received word that all Haiti staff members are safe (two members in the north, and four staff in the south). Communication is still very weak on the island and we are doing all we can to remain connected with our team in Haiti to understand the situation there on the ground and to help prepare Heifer's response.
Heifer has worked in Haiti for 10 years and is committed to the 16,000 families with whom we work, and to helping -- when the time is appropriate -- these and other families rebuild their lives and their livelihoods.
"We are relieved and pleased to hear that our Heifer staff members are safe, and we are working to stay in touch so that we can learn more about their situation and the impact upon our Heifer project partner families, and so that we may properly prepare for the time that we can provide the ongoing sustainable help and rehabilitation that is Heifer's trademark," said Steve Denne, Heifer's chief operating officer.

Heifer International: An update on Heifer's team in Haiti

For our Heifer International supporters who are not on Facebook or Twitter, here's the latest update from Heifer International HQ:

An update on Heifer's team in Haiti:
Today at 11:59am
Heifer International has seven staff members in Haiti, and we’re in the process of contacting them. Heifer’s offices are in Cap-Haitien in the north and Les Cayes in the south, not in Port-au-Prince where the quake had its epicenter. Heifer currently has 16 projects involving more than 16,000 families (direct aid and Pass On families) in Haiti.
While not a first responder, Heifer will contribute to long-term rebuilding efforts similar to those it offered after Hurricane Jeanne struck Haiti in 2004.
"What the people of Haiti need right now are the things that first responders can provide, the immediate aid, the food and water, the shelter and medicine," says Heifer International spokesman Joedy Isert. "But what they're going to need once some order has been restored and once things get past that initial shock, is they're going to need that sustainability, that opportunity for livelihood, and that's where we can provide some real help."

Hunger Banquet in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

On Monday, January 18th, a "Day of Service," and in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., Heifer International Portland joins Sunnyside Environmental School and Oxfam in an Annual Hunger Banquet.

Date: Monday, January 18, 2010

Where: Doubletree Hotel, 1000 NE Multnomah Street, Portland

Time: Doors open at 3pm, run to 6pm

"A day on, not a day off"

Sunnyside Environmental School continues its commitment to service and the movement to make Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, "a day on, not a day off," by hosting their annual Oxfam Hunger Banquet. This year Doubletree Hotel has generously agreed to sponsor the event, which will allow the Banquet's circle of influence to grow and expand to include more of the community. Sunnyside Principal, Sarah Taylor states, "Coretta Scott King and her children have asked other stop spend the King holiday doing service to empower others and this event is how we belie the school can help in that vision." The banquet aims to raise funds and awareness about hunger, poverty and inequality. Proceeds will benefit the Oregon Food Bank and Oxfam International. Tickets must be purchased in advance; they are available for $5 at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/94625

Related nonproft organizations, including the Oregon Food Bank, Heifer International Portland, Dignity Village, Growing Gardens and Portland Fruit Tree Project, will be present to provide information on opportunities to serve and work towards helping end hunger and inequality here in our community. Also in attendance will be a special guest speaker, Metro Councilor Rex Burkholder. Generous donations from New Seasons Market, People's Food Co-op, and Dave's Killer Bread, as well as volunteers fro Arleta School, have helped to make this event possible.

WHAT TO BRING: It's another Pot Luck Meeting so bring your favorite side dish to share. Yum!
AGENDA:

Leo Tautfest, a Heifer International volunteer for over 40 years, will share some of his eye witnessed accounts of Heifer International's good will around the globe (Don't want to miss this!)
Eliza Penick, Western Volunteer Coordinator, will be discussing some of the up and coming programs from Heifer International headquarters
Becky Wendall will be our gracious host to ensure you are feed, happy, and warm. She will also recap what Heifer Portland did last year to move forward in 2010
Noland Hoshino will discuss some of the fund-raising events for the new year.

In 2009, the Heifer Portland grassroots volunteer group laid the foundation and became a shining example for the rest of the country. Looking ahead to 2010, we will be busier than ever and we need all the help we can get to fight hunger and poverty in Portland and around the globe.
