Newmarket Farmers Market January 15th at Carpenter's Olde English Greenhouse

The Newmarket Farmers Market has a new home. This Saturday on January 15th is the opening of the market at Carpenter's Olde English Greenhouse from 9 to 1. Shop at this new location down the hill from The Stone Church and across the street from the Newmarket High School on 220 South Main Street.

Check out the new venue where Red Rover Coffee will be offering hot cups of joe and beans by the pound.

The Soup Guy will be presenting warm winter soups such as Sweet Corn Chowder and Malaysian Carrot & Sweet Potato Soup, and Sweet Melissa's Kitchen will be debuting a multi grain three seed bread (poppy, sesame and sunflower), and ciabatta, beer bread, raisin bread and English muffin bread.

While sampling and shopping the market, patrons will be graced by the music of Sam and Rob Southworth from 9 to 11, and then tunes from Clinton LaPointe from 11 to 1.

The market is in the second season of the winter markets held monthly on the third Saturday of the month. The market vendor selection includes local, fresh foods on offer for meals throughout the month.

Newmarket Farmers' Market Saturday December 18th

The Newmarket Farmers' Market is offering fresh and local foods for your holiday meals from 9 to 1 on Saturday December 18th inside The Stone Church. Warmth and music will surround market goers while choosing garlic, potatoes, winter squash, Swiss chard, Gilfeather turnips, daikon, dried beans or perhaps a holiday ham.

Fresh local beef, chicken, lamb and pork will also be offered for holiday meals. Bread, pastries, pies, eggs, syrup, and honey too, along with floral arrangements, body scrubs, homemade holiday candles and goats milk soap.

Two new vendors will be present - New Brew and NH20. New Brew will be bringing non alcoholic malted beverages served warm. Coffee infused, naturally sweet and earthy, and chocolate cinnamon will be offered. NH20 is crystal clear water harvested on the 282 acre Sunny Slope Farm in Alton. This product was awarded best of NH for 2010.

The winter Newmarket Farmers' Markets are held every third Saturday through April.

Sweet Melissa Pies at Newmarket Farmers' Market Saturday 11/20

Sweet Melissa Kitchen Pies will be offered at the opening of the first of the winter Newmarket Farmers' Markets in the second season this Saturday on November 20th from 9 to 1.

Melissa Clifford of Madbury began baking her pies for others in 2008 when she took special orders for the holidays. She is now offering the same to market goers. Her pies can be pre-ordered for pick up at this Saturday's market if Melissa's contacted by November 18th. Pies can also be pre-ordered for Thanksgiving by the 20th. All pies will be offered for $15 at the market on Saturday. Melissa creates a variety of luscious pies that include Fudgy Turtle Pie (a rich chocolate filling with toasted pecans topped with a caramel drizzle in a flaky, crispy crust); Pecan Pie (a classic filling of crunchy pecans with a sweet gooey filling in a flaky, crispy crust); Old Fashioned Apple Pie (a classic combination of sweet local apples piled high with a touch of cinnamon and nutmeg in a flaky, crispy crust); Apple Cranberry Crisp Pie (a delicious combination of sweet and tart - local apples and juicy cranberries with an oatmeal crisp topping in a flaky, crispy crust); and Maple Walnut Pumpkin Pie (a maple walnut streusel tops a silky smooth pumpkin filling in a flaky crispy crust).

The winter Newmarket Farmers' Markets will be held every 3rd Saturday November through May inside The Stone Church on Zion Hill overlooking Main Street.

Flint Corn with Antique Sheller at Newmarket Farmers Market 9/25

Flint corn from the Wild Miller Gardens will be ground into corn meal at the Newmarket Farmers' Market this Saturday, September 25th using an antique corn sheller from the Newmarket Historical Society. This history laden corn meal will be offered to market goers freshly ground and ready for cooking.

Flint corn is zea mays indurata known as Indian corn or calico corn and the same species of maize. This corn is as hard as flint because each kernel has a hard outer layer to protect the soft endosperm. Flint corn has a low water content so it is more resistant to freezing than other vegetables.

Native Americans in New England and in the Great Plains cultivated this hardy corn. Flint corn was the only Vermont crop to survive the infamous Year Without a Summer in 1816 when snow fell in June and killing frosts descended throughout the summer months. New Englanders and specifically Newmarket Farmers' Market patrons can now appreciate this hardy corn in such savory concoctions as Corn Pancakes a la Floriani and Creamy Polenta.

Joel Miller will use the antique sheller to shell the corn he grew on his farm and produce corn meal on demand at the market from 9 to 1. He and his wife Annalisa are staples of the market and the first vendor to populate the roster of the market. They are sought after for their knowledge, amiability and fresh produce, garlic and pork.

The Newmarket Farmers' Market is now in its second season with markets open every Saturday through October 9th nestled in the space between The Stone Church and the historical Stone School on Zion Hill.

Tim Gurshin at Newmarket Farmers' Market Saturday 8/21

Tim Gurshin will be performing at the Newmarket Farmers Market this Saturday morning August 21st from 9 to 11. Market patrons will be treated to the sounds of this accomplished singer, songwriter and acoustical guitarist who has recorded four cds with Songs Along the Highway being his most recent recording in 2010. Tim has performed solo for many years throughout New England and in Nashville.

"I have been working at writing songs ever since I can remember trying to figure out how a radio worked. It is a never ending quest to catch magic," says Tim. "My songs are based on lyrics with impact delivered by compelling music in the tradition of Kris Kritofferson, Tim Hardin and Bob Dylan. Lyrically, my songs often deal with both struggle and perserverance and the inevitable ambiguity of any move you make. Musically, I strive to create a solid melody and get it across with passion, while making it at least appear to be simple."

Tim plays the guitar in a variety of tunings, flatpick and finger style, and he often adds melodic or blues style harmonica. See Tim in perform Three Women at the Tupelo Music Hall in the video below.

Two documentary films have featured his music, one being the movie Mayflower. Tim wrote and performed the theme song for this documentary about student anti-war activities on the campus of the University of New Hampshire in 1970.

Olde Home Day with Oyster Fest & Beer Garden, Newmarket Farmer's Market, Art Exhibit - Saturday 8/14

Join the festivities this Saturday on Main Street closed to traffic from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. where live music will be heard resonating from the bandstand accompanying all the offerings of the day from pancakes to oysters. This event is Old Home Day presenting new elements to include the Oyster Tent & Beer Garden and the Newmarket Farmers' Market along with the Main Street Block Party and Faces of Newmarket art exhibit.

The festivities begin with an early morning Pancake Breakfast running from 7 to 9 for $7 at the Community Church at 137 Main Street. The proceeds will be contributed to the Newmarket Food Pantry. The Lamprey Health Care 5K Race begins at 8 a.m. at the Newmarket Community Center on 1 Terrace Drive. The $25 registration fee contributes to the Reach Out and Read Program.

Local vendors displaying their wares will be strung along Main Street adjacent to the bandstand where live music will begin at 10 a.m. to kick off the Main Street Block Party. The Oyster Tent & Beer Garden will open with a $5 admission fee at Schanda Park on Water Street on the bank of the Lamprey River down the hill from the Community Church where fresh oysters harvested from Great Bay and hand crafted beers will be offered for festival enjoyment.

The market, now in its second season, has become a weekly staple where local farmers offer fresh and organic food choices to the community. Seacoast musicians donate their time and talent to perform live for market goers as market goers gather food items for the week.

Art vendors will be present this Saturday selling their creations to raise money for a new roof on the Stone School which houses the Stone School Museum operated by the Newmarket Historical Society.

Those wishing to use laptops, netbooks or phones to connect to the internet may now do so in downtown Newmarket where WiFi access is available to all. To commemorate this availability, an unveiling event will be held at 1 p.m. at the bandstand.

Faces of Newmarket exhibit opens with an open house and artist reception from 12 to 4 at Ampers& Studio in Rivermoor landing, lower lever. This exhibit features a collection of portraitures in both oil and charcoal by local artist Lindsay Bezich, a UNH fine arts graduate. South Brook Farm at Newmarket Farmers Market Saturday 7/24

New to the Newmarket Farmers Market is South Brook Farm of Greenland offering eggs from free range poultry, farm grown vegetables and farm raised lamb to market goers this Saturday from 9 to 1. Eric and Kellye Berg decided several years ago to have more control over the food they consumed as a family so they became involved in their own food production.

The Bergs originally relied on the book The Vegetable Gardener’s BIBLE by Edward C Smith. Over time, they learned about companion planting to reduce the need of chemical pesticides, and composting farming waste to reduce the need for chemical fertilizers. "What we found happening was a nice harmony between raising animals and vegetables."

"We began with the purchase of 6 chicks from the feed store and now are raising pork lamb and poultry and vegetable in abundance!"

This year they made a commitment to winter farming and will be raising meat and eggs year round, offering surplus at a farmers market. They consider themselves micro farmers producing plenty in a small space with the utilization of some organic farming concepts. "Hopefully with this boutique farming we can offer a very nice product."

"We raise both Southdown and Katahdin sheep. They are mainly pasture raised with a small amount of grain as a food supplement. We’ve just purchased 3 fully organic foundation ewes to begin our Katahdin flock and look forward to following in the footstep of the breeder we’ve purchased them from.

"Our flock of hens mainly consist of the heritage New Hampshire breed for it dual purpose qualities. They range on a half acre of grass with access to shelter and space. They are excellent layers and yet carry good meat qualities for a natural bird. Our goal is to have a flock that is reproducing in a natural setting as the hens are encouraged to hatch out and raise their young.

"This year we’ve decided to add a new breed to the farm. With the purchase of French Wheaton Marans we hope to add some fun and interest in the egg colors that we be available for purchase early next spring. Our vegetable gardens incorporate the use of farm created compost and companion planting. Everything on our farm is raised under the philosophy of being good stewards to our animals and land. We feed our animals healthy diets and give them lots of green space to grow and thrive."

Andrea Szirbik & Chris Guzikowski Perform at Farmers' Market 7/17

Every Saturday musicians volunteer their time and talent at the Newmarket Farmers' Market providing tunes for market patrons to shop by. Tomorrow on Saturday July 17th from 9 to 1 Andrea Szirbik and Chris Guzikowski will be performing in the outdoor cafe and coffee bar area at the entrance to the Stone Church.

Andrea Szirbik has been singing since she started walking. Her performances in choruses and musical theater led her to songwriting. She is currently working on her first album, which will be dedicated to her cousin's memory. In the meantime, you can catch her live in the Seacoast area or contact her via facebook.

Chris Guzikowski grew up in a house always filled with music, to which he was always singing along. Musical theatre in high school and learning guitar in college eventually led to writing his own songs and performing them for whomever might be kind enough to listen. Chris has been playing around the Seacoast for a few years now and hopes to have his first album out sometime in 2010.

Wild Miller Gardens at Newmarket Farmers' Market Every Saturday

This time of year is garlic harvesting for Wild Miller Gardens in Lee. Garlic is one of their main and favorite crops. And, Newmarket Farmers Market patrons will be offered this garlic along with pastured pork, eggs, and fresh produce every Saturday from 9 to 1 in the parking lot between the Stone Church and the Stone School.

Joel and Annalisa Miller were the first vendor to commit and grace the Newmarket Farmers' Market in its first season last year. Their passion and knowledge of their food products is a main draw to the market.

Wild Miller Gardens is located on the historic Randall Farm in Lee. The Randall Farm is a 1700s homestead that had remained with the same family until 2003. The Cox family of the adjacent farm, Tuckaway Farm, saved this farm from development by putting most of the land under a conservation easement. Presently, four generations of family are living on this land working and dreaming alongside each other, say the Millers. The Randall Farm has not been worked in over 40 years. They are excited to care for the soils again and bring the whole working farm back to life.

The Millers are offering a Farmers Market Discount Program or CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). They offer an opportunity to purchase credit for their produce, eggs, pork, fruit and garlic to be spent at the farmer's market. So an up front fee of $300 is paid at the beginning of the summer season and $330 credit is available to spend on their fresh products at the farmers' market.

Deep Fry'd Blues Plays Saturday 7/10 on Main in the Bandstand

Deep Fry'd Blues is a power trio plus singer from the Seacoast NH area. The 3rd annual Main Street Music Series is featuring the lively performance of Deep Fry'd Blues this Saturday July 10th 11 to 2 pm in the bandstand on Main.

Every Saturday through Labor Day musicians are performing outside at the War Memorial Pavilion otherwise referred to as the Main Street Bandstand.

Deep Fry'd Blues band consists of these musicians:

Blind Dan Fishbein, drummer and bandleader, a fixture on the music scene for 20 years, has played with, Present Position, Carmen and the Country Drifters, Tony O and the Tornadoes, and Still Breathin, as well as many other bands.

Watchdog Scot Weinstein, on lead guitar and vocals, has played for over 30 years in many bands, including Merlin, Carmen and the Country Drifters, Still Breathin, Chris Bonoli and False Advertising.

Cosmic Ray Sykes on the bass hails from Pittsburgh Pa. and has played with Elfonzo Funk, Star Flash, KD and The Dimensions, The Blues Party, Hello Detroit, Blues Bound, Tony O and the Tornadoes, Blue collar Blues, Mark Choate and Persuaded and has backed up artists Chris Duarte, Mighty Sam McClane, Shirley Lewis, Parker Wheeler and Luther Guitar Jr. Johnson.

BCat Belinda Wolff on lead vocals, the baby of the group, has only been at it for 14 years, playing with Gypsy Rain, Mojo and the Commotions and of course, Deep Fry'd Blues.

The Newmarket Farmers' Market offers market goers a choice of wines from local vineyards weekly. Each Saturday a local winery will be present with a selection of wines to your fresh food choices. This week Candia Vineyards will debut at the market with their selection of romantic wines.

Candia Vineyards is a boutique winery located in Candia on some of the earliest farmed land in New Hampshire. This winery produces fine table wines made from grapes. New Hampshire's first Frontenac, La Crosse, Noiret and Diamond varietals have been hand picked to thrive in the local climate.

Ryan Thomson (Captain Fiddle) Performs on Main Saturday 6/19

Ryan Thomson, known as Captain Fiddle, will be performing in the Main Street Bandstand this Saturday on June 19th from 11 to 2 p.m. kicking off the 3rd season of the Music on Main Street Series that puts music on Main through Labor Day every Saturday.

Captain Fiddle is a Newmarket resident and accomplished musician. He has written the Fiddler's Almanac, a general book about fiddling, found in over 3000 libraries in North America. See his extensive music biography. For more information, contact Captain Fiddle.

Hurd Farm at Farmers Market Saturday with Grass Fed Meats

Hurd Farm will be joining the Newmarket Farmers' Market this Saturday, June 19th, offering grass fed beef, pork and chicken. The Hurd family has owned and operated their farm since 1923 as a dairy farm on the scenic Taylor River in Hampton. In 2005 they permanently preserved the farm by placing a conservation easement on the property.

Today Hurd Farm raises all natural grass fed beef and chickens and heritage breed pigs. Their meats and poultry are fed an all-natural diet with no added antibiotics or other additives as growth stimulants. Their animals are provided access to green grass and sunshine on the farm's 160 acres.

Newmarket Farmers' Market Opens Weekly on Saturdays Starting 6/19

The Newmarket Farmers' Market, the first year round New Hampshire market, will begin the second summer season this Saturday June 19th from 9 to 1 nestled in the parking lot between the two historical stone buildings on Zion Hill, the Stone Church and the Stone School. This is the kick off market for the weekly Saturday markets held through October 9th.

This opening day will offer market goers fresh spring greens, gourmet mushrooms, rotisseried plump and delicious chicken, strawberries, freshly baked bread, bagels, grass fed beef, maple syrup, wine, jams and jellies - just as a start.

While market goers fill bags and baskets with fresh and local food items for the week, live music will be performed during the first half of the market from Chris Peters and the second half of the market from Anthony Vito Fiandaca. Market musicians volunteer their talent and time for these events.

The Making of Strawbery Banke Lecture Monday Night 5/24 by Author J. Dennis Robinson

A lecture on The Making of Strawbery Banke will be presented Monday, tomorrow night on May 24th at the Stone School Museum at 7 p.m. by the noted seacoast historian and author J. Dennis Robinson. This lecture is free and open to the public and is the second in the series sponsored by the Newmarket Historical Society.

Local legend says Strawbery Banke Museum began when a Portsmouth librarian gave a rousing speech in 1957. The backstory is a complex tale of progress and urban renewal versus colonial architecture in New Hampshire's only seaport. J. Dennis Robinson will share the history of America's oldest neighborhood and the scenes of the founding years.

Tapping into private letters, unpublished records and personal interviews, he explores the politics of preservation at what Ken Burns calls one of the best history museums in the country. The author looks candidly at mistakes made and lessons learned in this grassroots success story.

The Newmarket Historical Society meets on the fourth Monday of the month, March through October, at 7 p.m. at the Stone School Museum. An informative lecture is scheduled for each meeting and all are free and open to the public.

Fresh Bagels at the Newmarket Farmers' Market Saturday May 22nd

Michael's fresh bagels debuted at the Newmarket Farmers' Market last Saturday with market goers commenting they were the best they have ever tasted. So these yummy bagels are returning this Saturday May 22 to the market a the Stone Church from 9 to 1.

Michael Friedman is 27 and lives in Brentwood, NH. He is originally from Baltimore, MD. He started making bagels in the summer of 2009, mostly because he says "I love bagels and hadn't had a great one since I moved to New Hampshire in June 2009."

Michael says his first few attempts were promising, but they were not great. Over the next few months he perfected his recipe and technique.

"What distiguishes my bagels from your average grocery store bagel is the cooking process. Authentic bagels are boiled and then baked. Other unique features of my bagels: they are formed and shaped by hand, they do not suffer from the super-sized craze, and they are best eaten within about 8 hours of coming out of the oven (the sooner the better)."

If fresh bagels aren't eaten the day they are made they should be sliced in half, placed in a plastic bag and frozen. To eat the left over bagels simply put them directly from the freezer into the toaster.

Michael lives with his fiancée, Stacy Blunt, who assists him in the kitchen and at the market, and their dog, Toby, and cat, Gus.

Healthy Home Harvest will be offering a bountiful selection of plants to market goers for garden filling this Saturday at the Newmarket Farmers' Market outside at the Stone Church from 9 to 1.

The savory varieties for selection at the market will include tomatoes (Lemon Boy, Husky Red, Sungold, Sweet 100, Jet Star Big Boy, Early Girl, etc), peppers, rhubarb, asparagus, lettuce, broccoli, brussel sprouts, lettuce, swiss chard, eggplant, cabbage, cukes, peppers, melons, zukes, squash (acorn, butternut, spaghetti, yellow summer), raspberries, and over a dozen types of herbs (rosemary, fennel, chives, nettle, mints, thyme, pennyroyal, parsley, tarragon, flax, cilantro, lemon balm, and more).

Sought after for their famous Shiitake and Oyster Mushrooms at the market, Healthy Home Harvest will also have these available at the market Saturday. Riley Etheridge Performs Thursday Night May 6th at The Stone Church

Riley Etheridge and his all star band play The Stone Church Thursday night, May 6th at 8 p.m.

Riley is generating buzz after recently completing a West Coast tour with Michael Kang (String Cheese Incident), and his large group of talented musicians - guitarist Shane Theirot (Neville Brothers /Boz Scaggs), Dan Dugmore (James Taylor/Linda Ronstadt), Mickey Rapheal (Willie Nelson), and New Orleans jazz pianist/composer Larry Sieberth, among others. He has spent over 20 years performing and recording in Southern Louisiana; he has deep roots in Southern and alternative country music and currently resides in NYC. He has just released his newest album, Things I Used to Know (audio), to rave reviews.

Farm Women, Farm Work at Stone School Museum Monday 4/26

A lecture on Farm Women, Farm Work will be presented Monday tomorrow night on April 26th at the Stone School Museum at 7 p.m. by the director of the New Hampshire Farm Museum, Kathleen Shea. This lecture is free and open to the public and is the second in the series sponsored by the Newmarket Historical Society.

Farm women are the heart of the farm. They cook, clean, raise and sell their crops, help with the chores, do the bookkeeping, and somehow manage to raise the family too.

The New Hampshire Farm Museum consists of two adjoining farmsteads on Plummer's Ridge in Milton, New Hampshire. The historic Jones Farm and the Plummer Homestead were passed down in the same families for two centuries. Today the properties are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and consist of 50 acres of field and forest, a working farm, historic houses and barns, a blacksmith shop, a shoe shop and exhibits on agriculture and rural life.

The Newmarket Historical Society meets on the fourth Monday of the month, March through October, at 7 p.m. at the Stone School Museum. An informative lecture is scheduled for each meeting and all are free and open to the public.

The Stone School Museum is located high upon Zion's Hill (Granite Street), and is open every Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m., June through August, or by appointment. For more information call 659-7420 or 247-3375.

Bee Thankful Farm at Newmarket Farmers' Market Tomorrow 4/17

Bee Thankful Farm will be present at the Newmarket Farmers' Market at the Stone Church tomorrow, Saturday April 17th offering fresh greens to market goers.

Nick Karakoudas is the farmer and his Bee Thankful Farm is located in Deerfield. He uses a high tunnel (a solely-solar greenhouse) now in full production mode, enabling them to offer longer growing seasons. Careful crop selection, planting dates, and crop protection within the tunnel are required to keep plants alive and growing out of season. Check out the crops grown at Bee Thankful Farm here.

They are currently in the process of putting in an orchard for dwarf apple, peach and pear trees. They come into production quickly. Another field is being planted to blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. A chicken coop is still in the works. Free-ranging chickens will be providing farm fresh eggs.

Bee Thankful Farm offers CSA shares. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) provides a direct link between a local farmer and citizens who are interested in purchasing a regular supply of fresh produce.

"Each season, members purchase a share of the crops before they are planted. Think of it as a subscription. This allows the farmer to pay for growing expenses in advance, making the whole endeavor financially possible for him in today’s economy. Each week, CSA members are assured of receiving an equal share of that week's harvest."

Musicians Playing at Newmarket Farmers' Market Saturday 4/17

Two musicians will be performing at the Newmarket Farmers' Market at the Stone Church this Saturday April 17th. Drew Szeliga will perform the first half of the market and Andrea Szirbik will be performing the second half of the market.

Drew Szeliga is a native of Newmarket, NH. He has been playing music recreationally for 9 years. He is a self-taught guitarist and has more recently started writing his own songs. Drew successfully completed the 2009 RPM Challenge by writing and recording his own album, “Fathers and Sons.” Listen to Drew's songs here. See Drew on facebook.

Andrea Szirbik has been singing since she started walking. She sang in choruses and choirs from elementary school through highschool, as well as playing lead roles in many musical theater productions. In college she began playing guitar and writing her own songs. She performs mainly in New Hampshire and is working on her first album, which will be dedicated to her cousin's memory and will be available this summer. View Andrea singing above in the video.

Life is Sweet Baking Company will be offering an array of products including breads, pastries, cookie bars, loaf cakes and several gluten free products to market goers this Saturday April 17th at the Newmarket Farmers' Market.

This company is spearheaded by Martha Bogart who is a recent graduate of the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts. She is a one woman show in South Hampton and a lover of all things sweet and tasty.

Her baked goods and breads are made from as many organic and local ingredients as possible, including eggs from her own backyard chickens. Life is Sweet products are made with only unbleached, un-bromated flour. All ingredients are chosen with great care. Martha is a big believer that the food we eat plays a major role in our health.

Every ingredient will be completely organic or very low spray. Her ingredient list includes flour from King Arthur's in Vermont, eggs from her backyard, butter from Kate's of Maine, milk and some pastry flour at the end of this growing season from Brookford Farm, apples from Cider Hill Farm and Apple Annies, and berries from Moynahan Farm (up the street from us).

Martha's baked creations include:Plain Croissants, Chocolate Croissants, Cinnamon or Chocolate Babka, Vanilla Bean Loaf Cake, Chocolate Quinoa Loaf Cake (GF), Cinnamon Chocolate Chip Bars, Toffee Almond Bars, Lemon Bars, Raspberry Bars (GF), Blueberry or Apple Streusel, Pie Assortment when fruit is in season, French Boule, Baguette, 100 % whole wheatbread, Cheddar Bread, Rosemary Olive Bread, English Muffins, and Herb Batter Bread.
