I'm back with the topic I like to talk about - online freelancing.

This time, I came up with a dedicated website to talk about online freelancing and online programs for freelancers.

Take time to visit the website. I've prepared a number of pages to basically tackle this question: How to make money as a freelancer?

SEO & Writing competition to win a share of US$15,000!!

Freelancer.com has again launched another contest and this time, it's for SEO folks and writers. Looking back, I spent almost 9 years in my first job; now, here in my second job, I thought I’ll be able to beat that record but… I may not be able to. August 6, 2010 marks my 3rd year, 6 more years more or is it time to go?

My aggressive search for new employment has started to reap some responses. On the other hand, this internet entrepreneur, whom I’ve developed tripopedia.com and gisearch.com in freelance capacity, got an equally good offer: me (from home) working for his projects full time. Is it something I should consider versus overseas employment?

Decision-making time again and it’s a tough one.

First things first: looking at advantages and disadvantages of one over the other.

Advantages of working from home

(+) More relax and totally flexible in terms of when I want to face my computer and work and when do I want to take a break and for how long; name it all. The goal is I should be able to render a total of 8 hours within a 24-hour period.

(+) No more commuting to/from work taking an average of 1.5 hours daily; less expense (no more daily allowance for transportation and food)

(+) 24 hours less 8 -- that’s 16 more hours for other things, play time, more sleep time, and maybe more time to take more work and earn more!

Disadvantages of working from home

(-) Take care of filling my own income tax return; shoulder the full amount of contributions for SSS, PAG-IBIG and PHILHEALTH

(-) No health benefits

(-) Less job security (until when will I have work – working from home?)

(-) Less the bonuses mandated by law

Advantages of working in the corporate world

(+) Health benefits

(+) Employer’s share for SSS, PAG-IBIG and PHILHEALTH contributions

(+) Job security (I’ll make the same amount regardless of work load)

Disadvantages of working in the corporate world

(-) Stressful – meetings; management actions you don’t like, dealing with not just your work but other people you need to collaborate with

(-) Render 8 hours per day (Monday through Friday) within core working hours

(-) Can really be demanding during peak months hence more time at work, less time at home

(-) Daily commuting to/from work can really get tiring at times plus the daily allowance for food and transportation

(-) Adhere to corporate policies such as day to day attire

I guess, I’ve listed the common ones; for sure there's more to consider. Rhyan, a colleague taking his MBA from DLSU-Taft has this advice:

if the income you generate with working from home is enough to compensate for your monthly expenses when working in the corporate world --- then go! if that's the case, it will also mean that the extra time you will have when working from home can still be spent to do extra activities and then eventually contribute to generate higher disposable income..
Thanks Rhyan!

Think. Think. Think. I have a month or so… so help me God.

Instant Website

How you do want to have a website that’s literally painless on your part? Painless in such a way that you don’t have to worry about buying/setting up hosting; buying/registering a domain name, thinking over how should your website work, what pages to have, database, and hiring a web designer/developer to put things together… too many to worry about! Without all these, and you have your website – that’s painless.

Simple or complex websites go through the same steps. The difference is in development time frame, number of employed for development and of course, cost. If you need a simple website with basic features then you don’t deserve all the pains to have that website.

For those who need simple websites, few basic pages and dynamic content; I have good news for you! My Canadian partner and I are in the process of setting up a solution where you only need to cash out $49 US dollars (introductory price) and you will have your website within 24 hours.

To have your instant website with basic pages and custom Content Management System (CMS) for you to maintain dynamic contents (texts/images), we have made it so that you only need to:

Purchase the solution which is very affordable at $49 US dollars

Tell us the domain name you want (example: mycompany.com)

Pay for hosting and domain name registration (which is renewed yearly) standard hosting package + domain name registration would normally cost around $55 US dollars.

Then we shall do the work on our end:

Get your domain name registered and purchase standard hosting package

Install the solution into your hosting account, configure it to your preferences

Within 24 hours, you shall be able to access your website, change contents through the Content Management System

That’s it. Painlessly, you have your website; less worries, less work, less cost.

50 Unique Templates for EC-CUBE - Filipino Designer Wante

View project here

Description

We are looking for a Filipino designer to make us 50 unique template sets (3 pages are unique) + 150 more sets. This is a huge website which aims to serve daily commuters of Philippines rail transit systems (currently: MRT-3, LRT-1, LRT-2 and the goodie PNR)

I've got partners in this project; two successful bloggers and a fellow software engineer, I will name them here after I get approval from them.

We're looking at serving thousands of train commuters through news, blogs, and forums.

We're currently working at the landing page and inner pages. The forum, using phpBB software, is now installed and ready for users to register and start to discuss topics related to Rail Transit Systems in the Philippines.

Check the web site at http://www.railtransit.com.ph/

Home Theater Shack Stores and Blog

Home Theater Consumer Electronics Stores and Home Theater Shack Blog are most recent finished online projects.

The first one is basically a new landing page of already existing site. The customer needed to have this new page for SEO purposes. They wanted the page to be very straightforward as far as showcasing what products do they have.

The blog is simply another way to display most active contents out of the site's forum through RSS feeds. It is created so that customers are easily updated on areas they are most interested in.

Design and implementation are my scope in these two websites which paid me almost a grand. I had a great time working with the owner of these site as they are very accommodating, easy to work with and are always there to give the support needed as I progress on the projects.

Visit Home Theater Consumer Electronics Stores and Home Theater Shack Blog in the following links:

http://www.hometheatershackstores.com/
http://www.hometheatershack.com/hometheaterblog/

Their their forums at:

http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/

What Is RSS?

What is RSS? RSS, an acronym for Rich Site Summary, is a text file following a specific standard in formatting to deliver LIVE web content. RSS is widely utilized by news sites, blogs and other online content publishers to feed content to their human readers through RSS readers or parsers.

How is RSS built, distributed and consumed?

1. Content publisher build the RSS

2. The link to the RSS is made public

3. RSS consumers may subscribe to the feed through online feed readers. Website developers may write their own RSS readers or parsers to display the content into a web page

Below is an example of how RSS is formed.

RSS Example

This is how RSS is formatted

First item in this RSS feed

Description of first item

The above is very basic example, more robust RSS feeds got more tags like image, guid, etc.

Do you need a custom PHP RSS builder or PHP RSS reader?

I am offering my services in both writing a custom PHP RSS builder and writing custom PHP RSS reader. I was so convinced I had what it takes to deliver it on time and deliver it with excellent quality. Of course, not to mention, the budget was interesting.

I placed by competitive bid on that project (it was actually 3rd from the highest bid) hoping that I will be awarded the project. With my bid in, I went on to make some quick samples, compiled a few related projects and sent these to the employer. I got no reply the following day (the project was still opened with more bids coming in). I sent another message to the employer not realizing that I became very aggressive already.

After a couple more days, the employer responded, 'your bid was interesting and I could have awarded you the project but I don't like working with aggressive people. Sorry, I have to pick someone else'.

I learned my lesson. One or two messages should be sufficient. Wait for a reply before sending another message (when the situation asks for it). Otherwise, leave everything to the employer. After all, no matter how good you are, showing some kick-ass portfolio won't count much; final decision is still theirs.

Provide what you can, convince them that you can and that you are the person to hire but NEVER pressure them with your aggressiveness or you are most likely to fail.

Filipino Telemarketing Agents Required - URGENT!!

Here's an opportunity for Filipino Telemarketing Agents. CSS 'float' property has no 'center' or 'middle' value. How can the div be centered?

You will need to use another CSS property, 'margin' and give it a value 'auto' so you will have a CSS declaration: div { margin: auto; }

That centers the div in your web page.

You want to have 3 columns (3 divs) inside your parent div. The first div to be a left sidebar, the second div to be the centered - main column and the 3rd (last) div to be the right sidebar.

CSS 'float' property comes into play now.

First div: div.leftsidebar { float: left; width:20%; }

second div: div.maincolumn { margin:auto; width:60%; }

3rd div: div.rightsidebar { float: right; width:20% }

Alright, that's a bit of CSS stuff already... here's some explanation. We gave the first div a class name 'leftsidebar', the second div a class name, 'maincolumn' and the third div a class name, 'rightsidebar' so we can easily refer to each style in our HTML. Notice that we used margin:auto for the maincolumn so it is made centered. The width is there to specify how wide we want each div to be.

Hope this helps.

Filipino Freelancers on Facebook

Started a fan page for 'Filipino Freelancers' on facebook. More inbound links, more visitors to your website.

How does link building goes?

You use some selected keywords to be the link anchor text. You will have to point this link to your website, hence the term “inbound link”. A simple example is this: Freelancers Guide Online (the keywords: Freelancers Guide Online is used as anchor text for the link to this website). You would find sites relevant to your website and place these inbound links. This is the typical link building process.

One way link building vs. reciprocal link building

With one way link building, you only have to worry about inbound links – links to your website. Mostly, this kind of link building is PAID. You will have to pay for each link or total number of links pointing to your website. Reciprocal link building on the other hand is mostly free since those websites with your links in requires that you link back to them – reciprocal links or outbound links.

Make money in link building

I’ve been into both. I have provided link building services and get paid for it. I also have tried hiring someone to do link building for this website.

I was hired by ‘QuarterMaster’ of Freelancer.com to do a link building for its ‘GAFcash Freelance Advertising Units’ where I had to make 50 inbound links. I also have hired someone to have inbound links to this website in related websites with page rank of 2 or above.

Linking is definitely not a difficult job. In most cases, you will be given the kind of websites you will need to put inbound links into. Also, you will be provided with a set of keywords to use as link anchors. Though, the volume can be overwhelming especially if you will be asked to put inbound links into 100 or more sites. Imagine the effort you will have to put into it to complete the job. Needless to day, it calls for some patience and determination to get the job done.

How much can one earn from link building?

No standard rates. Some employers can afford $250 or $500 or 50 to 100 links while others are very conservative with their budget and pays around $50 to $100 for 25 links or so. Pricing is always settled between the employer and the freelancer.

Visit link building jobs page for newly posted projects you can try.

SCAM Alert: Currency Exchange Job

A few weeks ago, I almost fell to this 'Currency Exchange Job' scam. This could have made me $300 more broke. Beware! Read on…

This 'Currency Exchange Job' was posted on a legit freelancing site. I bid on it and I was immediately hired to do the job.

THE JOB:
They will have to utilize my Paypal account to accept payments from their customers. Withdraw the money into my local bank account and have it sent to them via Western Union. Their reason: they could not accept Paypal payments as Paypal does not allow money withdrawals to their country (Ukraine).

I went through a 'test transaction'. A guy (from nowhere) sent $300+ into my Paypal account. I was then told to withdraw this money into my local bank then have it sent to them via Western Union after taking my commission of $20. Yes, $20-commission every transaction.

While waiting for the money to be credited into my bank account (usually 2-4 business days), I was alerted by Paypal that that payment of $300+ was refunded after that guy complained to Paypal that it was not authorized! (Hmmm, was his credit card hacked?)

My account ended up having negative balance. Thanks God, the money is yet to be credited into my bank account! Had it come first and I sent it to those crooked people, I could have been $300+ broke.

I am suspecting that the guy who sent money into my Paypal account could have been the same guy who gave me the Job.

THE SCHEME:
He sends money to the Paypal account and then later on, complains to Paypal that it was not legit. Paypal will issue refund. He gets his money back and get more from the victim!

Well, in my case, they failed on TIMING as I still have the money when the refund was made.

Target victims are those with verified Paypal accounts but are not under any Merchant Protections that Paypal has for its users. Being not under any merchant protection, Paypal can initiate refund immediately.

The Sisters of Mary Schools Philippines

On top of all and any projects on the side (Alumni of the Sisters of Mary School Inc, Brothers of Christ website, Fr. Good health and more ca$h to everyone! :)

Many that I've met; in person and online are a bit hesitant to try freelancing online. Common factor: they look at it as more of a scam, bogus, lies than realizing that it is for real.

Today, I will tell you (again) some proof to that statement.

My freelancing life is now 4 years and counting. I can't stop but talk about how I started on it and how helped me technically and financially.

Before I started on freelancer.com I was more of a C++ guy. It is what I need in my full time work. I know a bit of Visual Basic, a bit of JAVA and basic HTML tags and that's it.

After I registered at freelancer.com and having my first project for $30 bucks. I realized that there's much more areas I have to learn. I told myself, 'Long way to go kid!'. Seeing the job categories on the website, I started to read online tutorials about web development.

After 4 years, here I am; definitely not a guru on any field but I am sure, I can handle jobs that requires these core technologies: HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT, AJAX, PHP, MYSQL, some basics in Adobe Photoshop editing and some basics in FLASH (Swishmax)

Four (4) years freelancing online. Isn't it enough proof that online freelancing is for real?

<media:rating>nonadult</media:rating>
