Through this work, Sri GuruRaayaru has laid out the basic tenets of Madhva Philosophy and significance of MukhyaPraAna the Vaayu Jeevottama. The sloka goes like this…

This phrase sets up the foundation for the reasons behind the incarnation of Vaayu Deva as Sri Madhvacharya on the earth. Many years ago, due to passage of time, true knowledge of the scriptures was lost. Pious people desirous of learning the scriptures were not able to receive proper guidance.

This prompted the Deities such as Brahma, Rudra etc. to pray Lord Vishnu on behalf of the people thirsty for true knowledge. Bhagawan Vishnu directed Mukhyapraana Sri Vayu Devaru to adorn the role of a human being on earth with the principal purpose of spreading the true meaning of the scriptures.

Sri Vayu Devaru with utmost humility wore the Lord’s wishes as one would wear an ornament on the head and incarnated as Sri Madhvacharya and established the dualist school of philsophy Dvaita-Tattvavaada on a firm foundation. This fact is also described in Sri SuMadhva Vijaya, chapter 2, verse 1-4.

Have you ever wondered how our traditional Panchangas calculate the exact day and time of Vijayadasami? 

Far from being mere arbitrary dates, these timings are deeply rooted in advanced Vedic astronomy, seasonal mathematics, and authoritative scriptural proofs (Pramanas). Here is a look at the sacred calculation behind this day of ultimate victory!

How is Vijayadasami Reckoned?

Vijayadasami is observed on the Dasami Tithi (tenth lunar day) of the Ashwin Sukla Paksha (bright fortnight). However, the absolute rule for its celebration depends on the sun's daily arc:

 The Aparahna Rule: 

The festival is calculated to fall on the day when the Dasami Tithi prevails during the Aparahna Kaala the afternoon window. (Aparahna Kaala, roughly between 1:00 PM and 3:30 PM depending on local sunset).

If Dasami spans across the Aparahna period of two consecutive days, the day that overlaps with the Sravana Nakshatra (constellation) is preferred.

If it does not touch the afternoon of either day, the day where it begins or prevails during the morning/sunrise (Udayatithi) is taken.

 Regional Variations: 

Because calculations rely on local sunrise and sunset timings, traditions diverge perfectly. The standard rule (followed across most of India) strictly prioritizes this afternoon intersection. Meanwhile, the Eastern tradition (followed during Durga Puja in West Bengal, Odisha, and Assam) prioritizes Udayatithi (the Tithi present at sunrise) to mark the conclusion of the festivities.

 The Scriptural Pramana for Vijay Muhurta:

The Vijay Muhurat is not a modern astrological creation; it is a structurally verified cosmic window backed by millennia of scriptural authority:

- Vedic Foundation: The Taittiriya Brahmana of the Krishna Yajurveda explicitly lists the 15 daytime Muhurtas, structurally naming the 11th division as "Vijayah" (विजया).

- Dharmashastra Authority: Classical manuals like the Nirnaya Sindhu and Dharma Sindhu establish that when the Dasami Tithi intersects with this 11th daytime block, it forms an infallible combination for success, dissolving all planetary afflictions (Doshas).

- Itihasa/Puranic Backing: The Valmiki Ramayana and Mahabharata record that Bhagawan Sri Ramachandra initiated his march to Lanka, and the Pandavas retrieved their weapons from the Shami tree to rout the Kaurava army, precisely during this afternoon window.

 The Timing: "Two Ghatis"

Scripturally, the duration of the Vijay Muhurat is defined as exactly Two Ghatis (where 1 Ghati = 24 minutes, making a nominal Muhurta 48 minutes).

- The Measurement Rule:

The calculation begins exactly at local sunrise (0 Ghatis). The daytime period is divided into 15 equal blocks. The first 10 blocks (20 Ghatis or exactly 8 hours) are allowed to pass. The Vijay Muhurat begins exactly at the 21st Ghati from sunrise.

 The Mantralayam Alignment:

Reflecting this precise math, the authoritative Panchanga of the Sri Raghavendra Swamy Matha (Mantralayam)—aligned with the Smritimuktavali—standardizes this peak auspicious window for devotees between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM.

Counting roughly 8 hours from a standard 6:15 AM regional sunrise brings you to ~2:15 PM, placing the two sacred Ghatis squarely within this user-friendly golden hour!

Vaisakha maasam is the sacred month the divine marriage of Lord Venkateshwara (Srinivasa) and Goddess Padmavathi Devi took place.

In fact, this event of divine marriage forms the basis for the Supreme God Vishnu to manifest at Tirumala hills in this Kaliyuga.

For making this event happen Lord Vishnu came down to the earth from his abode Vaikunta after having a wrangle (Leela of the Lord) with his consort Goddess Maha Lakshmi.

He took the form of Srinivasa and settled down at Aananda Nilaya on the top of Tirumala Hills called Venkataadri also known as Venkataachala after getting married with Goddess Padmavathi Devi.

Basar - A Rare Temple of Goddess Saraswathi

Jnaana Saraswathi Temple

In our country we find very few temples of Goddess Saraswathi which are of very ancient origin. Out of two such famous temples dedicated to Goddess Saraswathi one which can be easily accessed is in the Adilabad district of Telangana State in a prominent place called Basar. Situated on the Banks of holy river Godavari, Goddess at Basar is known as Jnaana Saraswathi the one who bestows knowledge. It is the only ancient temple (more than 5000 years old) in the entire South India that is dedicated to the Goddess of Learning Sri Saraswathi.

Legend behind the Temple...

According to the sthala purana (local legend), it is said that Sage Sri Veda Vyasa of Mahabharata fame went on a pilgrimage as part of his spiritual pursuit after the Kurukshetra war. During the course of his journey, he reached Basar, situated on the banks of the holy river Godavari in the Dandakaranya region. Finding this place incredibly peaceful and serene for his penance, he settled down to meditate.

It is believed that the Divine Mother appeared before him and ordained him to install the idols of the Shakthi trio: Maha Saraswathi, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Kali. Accordingly, Sage Sri Veda Vyasa brought three handfuls of sand from the riverbed and began worshiping the Divine Mother. Miraculously, these sand heaps transformed into the solid idols of Goddess Lakshmi, Saraswathi, and Kali. Due to the presence of Sage Sri Veda Vyasa, who stayed at this place from then on, the area initially came to be known as Vyaasapuri. Over time, the name evolved phonetically into Vasara, and ultimately into Basara or Basar.

Though it is a sacred kshetra of the Shakthi trio, the site became universally renowned as a Saraswathi kshetra dedicated to the Goddess of Learning, known here as Goddess Gnana Saraswathi. The presiding deity, Goddess Saraswathi, is depicted in a seated position holding her sacred musical instrument, the Veena, in two hands. As a unique marvel, the sand idol is beautifully bedecked with turmeric paste. The separate shrines of Maha Lakshmi and Maha Kali are located close by, just a short distance away.

The Jnana Saraswathi Temple at Basar is globally famous for a sacred ritual known as Aksharabhyasam—the formal initiation of a young child into education. Countless devotees bring their children to this temple, especially on the auspicious day of Vasantha Panchami, to perform the Aksharabhyasam ceremony in the firm belief that it will bless them with immense prosperity in their education and life-long learning.

Festivals at Basar

Grand celebrations are hosted at this Saraswathi temple on the occasions of Vasantha Panchami and Maha Shivarathri, which typically fall during the months of January and February. The temple also celebrates the Devi Navarathri festival and Dussehra with great fervor during September and October. On these sacred occasions, thousands of pilgrims take a holy dip in the river Godavari before seeking the divine blessings of Goddess Gnana Saraswathi.

How to Reach Basar?

Though the temple historically fell under the Adilabad District administration, it is geographically much closer to Nizamabad town in northern Telangana (formerly part of Andhra Pradesh). Basar is excellently connected by both rail and road networks.

By Road: Nizamabad is well-connected via National Highway 7 (NH-7). State transport buses (TSRTC/APSRTC) operate numerous services to Basar, connecting it to all major towns and cities. By road, Basar is located 210 km from Hyderabad, 55 km from Nizamabad, and 70 km from Nirmal. Nanded in Maharashtra is situated just 80 km away.

By Rail: Basar is prominently featured on the Indian Railway map, situated along the Hyderabad–Manmad section of the South Central Railway zone at a distance of about 30 km from Nizamabad. All passenger and express trains operating on this route provide a scheduled halt at the Basar railway station.

By Air: The nearest airport is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, which is an international gateway located approximately 210 km away from the temple.

Stay and Accommodation

For a single-day itinerary, an overnight stay may not be necessary, as pilgrims can comfortably return to the nearby city of Nizamabad or Hyderabad by nightfall. For travelers wishing to stay overnight, there are several hotels and guest houses available—including accommodations managed by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD)—offering clean lodging options to devotees at a reasonable cost.

Meaning: Oh! Goddess Saraswati, the queen of the four-faced Brahma! You hold the Veena in your hand and possess the ultimate, pure knowledge that survives even the destruction of the universe. You are the ruling deity of all the Vedas. 
Oh! Janani (Veda-Janani), I bow to you and beg of you: please grant me a noble, righteous intellect, and come reside on my tongue so that I may effortlessly sing and glorify the divine qualities of Bhagawan Vishnu, the Lord of Lakshmi (Sri Hari).

A human being cannot even utter the names of God or comprehend scriptural truths without the grace of the presiding deities of speech and intellect. Sri Jagannatha Dasaru beautifully acknowledges that his own capacity to compose this great spiritual work is entirely dependent on Goddess Saraswati clearing his mind and speaking through him. 

Goddess Saraswati the consort of Chaturmukha Brahma is VedaAbhimaani Devata without whose (Brahmani) blessings it is impossible to get the yathartha gnyaana of Vedas.

As VedaAbhimaani Devata, Saraswathi Devi is placed in 4th Kakshya along with Bharati dEvi as per Tattvavaada Taratamya.

Anusandhana:

Saraswathi antargatha > BraHmaAntargata > MaAyaVaAsudeva

In the very first sloka of VaayuStuti; Sri Thrivikrama Panditaachaarya is making a reference and adoration to Goddess Saraswathi (VaakkDevi) who is also known as SharadaDevi along with Lord Vishnu, Goddess LakshmiDevi, and Sri Aananda Theertharu (Lord Vaayu), indicating that, one should always offer salutations to these divine quartet before commencing any literary work or making any stothra, parayana, pravachana etc.

Anything that we acquire in this life may perish but, the knowledge acquired through Akshara Gnana will never perish and will be an eternal asset. Blessings and Grace of Goddess Saraswathi Devi the presiding deity of such Akshara Gnyaana is very much essential for anyone to acquire and excel in the filed of learning/education (Vidya-Buddhi-Gnyaana).

विद्या ददाति विनयं विनयाद् याति पात्रताम्।
(Vidyā dadāti vinayaṃ, vinayād yāti pātratām)

"True education gives humility; from humility comes worthiness."

Vidya will excel, only when there is Vinaya/humility. VIDYA will shine, only where there is Neeti/Samskaara. When there is no Vinaya, where there is no Neeti/Samskaara such a person even though educated is a literately uneducated person. In such places/with such persons Vidya Lakshmi will not reside.

Though Goddess Saraswathi Devi to be prayed/worshipped on a daily basis, special focus is given during Navarathri days. Starting from the day of Moola Nakshathra Goddess Saraswathi Devi is specially worshipped with shodasa-upachara pooja.

In Sanatana Dharma worship of Saraswathi is mainly in three forms viz... As Devatha (Goddess), consort of Chaturmukha Brahma (Brahmani), as VedaAbhimaani Devata, presiding deity of learning, knowledge and wisdom, as Vaakk Devi the Goddess of Speech.

According to Brahma Purana-anthargatha Sri Venkatachala Mahatmya, Swami Pushkarini at Tirumala Kshethra is a manifestation of the Saraswathi who did severe penance and got a boon from Bjhagawan Vishnu and has positioned there at Tirumala as per directions of the supreme God Sri Hari. As per the boon, Bhagawan Vishnu accorded Swami Pushkarini the status of Sreshtattva (superiorirty) among all the Theerthas (Pushkarinis’) Two specific days in Hindu calendar are exclusively earmarked for worshiping Goddess Saraswathi Devi viz. Symbolism:

Seated on a fully blossomed white lotus, Goddess Saraswathi is generally depicted as Chaturbhuja (four-armed). She holds the Veena with two of her hands, while her other two hands hold the Vedas (sacred scriptures) and a mala (sacred rosary). A white Hamsa (swan) is depicted as her vehicle, symbolizing a sattvik nature, purity, high intellectual capability, and discrimination.

Meaning:

Oh Goddess Saraswati, the giver of boons and fulfiller of pure desires! I bow to you as I begin my education. May you always bless my efforts with success and fulfillment.

Oh! Mother with beautiful eyes like lotus petals, whose brilliant form shines like golden lotus pollen, and who eternally dwells in the pure lotus—protect me always. You are the divine Mother who completely destroys every trace of mental dullness, lethargy, and spiritual blindness.

The Deity of the Age:

The testimony that Lord Venkateswara is the manifest protector of our current era. कृते तु नारसिंहोऽभूत् त्रेतायां रघुनन्दनः । द्वापरे वासुदेवश्च कलौ वेङ्कटनायकः ॥ kṛte tu nārasiṃho'bhūt tretāyāṃ raghunandanaḥ | dvāpare vāsudevaśca kalau veṅkaṭanāyakaḥ || In the cycle of time, specific forms of the Divine are "Prathyaksha Dhaivams" (perceivable Deities). Lord Narasimha ruled the Krita Yuga, Lord Sri Rama the Treta Yuga, and Lord Sri Krishna the Dvapara Yuga. In our current Kali Yuga, Lord Sri Venkateswara is the presiding, visible protector. The Supreme Abode: The declaration of the uniqueness of Tirumala in the entire cosmos. वेङ्कटाद्रिसमं स्थानं ब्रह्माण्डे नास्ति किञ्चन । वेङ्कटेशसमो देवो न भूतो न भविष्यति ॥ veṅkaṭādrisamaṃ sthānaṃ brahmāṇḍe nāsti kiñcana | veṅkaṭeśasamo devo na bhūto na bhaviṣyati || There is no place in the entire universe equal to Venkatadri, and no deity equal to Lord Venkateswara neither in the past nor in the future going to be. He is the ultimate, incomparable refuge. The Epitome of Benevolence: The prayer for the fulfillment of desires and universal welfare. कल्याणाद्भुतगात्राय कामितार्थप्रदायिने । श्रीमद्वेङ्कटनाथाय श्रीनिवासाय ते नमः ॥ kalyāṇādbhutagātrāya kāmitarthapradāyine | śrīmadveṅkaṭanāthāya śrīnivāsāya te namaḥ || This stands as a testimony to the benevolence of Lord Srinivasa, who is an epitome of Kalyana (Auspiciousness). He is Anantha Kalyana Guna Paripoorna—the supreme God Sri Hari who bestows wealth and fulfills all desires. When the Supreme God weds (Kalyana), it is for Loka Kalyana—the welfare of the entire universe and all of humanity. The Power of Bhakti: The profound truth that the Supreme God is bound by the love of His devotees. भक्तिपाशेन बद्धसत्पदपङ्कजम् । सनकादिध्यानगम्यं श्रीनिवासं भजेऽनिशम् ॥ bhaktipāśena baddhasatpadapaṅkajam | sanakādidhyānagamyaṃ śrīnivāsaṃ bhaje'niśam || While worldly threads lead to grief, being "bound" to the Lord’s lotus feet with the thread of deep devotion (Bhakti) brings nothing but eternal bliss. Though He is so supreme that He is only reachable through the deep meditation of sages like Sanaka, He allows Himself to be captured by the simple love of a devotee. Conclusion: O' Supreme God Srinivasa, I always pray to you! वेङ्कटेशं वर्णयितुं केन शक्यते? veṅkaṭeśaṃ varṇayituṃ kena śakyate? "By whom is it possible to fully describe Lord Venkateswara?" वेङ्कटेशगुणान् वक्तुं केन शक्यते? (Veṅkaṭeśaguṇān vaktuṃ kena śakyate?) "Who is capable of speaking of (exhausting) the qualities of Lord Venkateswara?" this is just an iceberg of His glory and our words are but a tiny tip. As the scriptures say, even the thousand-headed Adisesha or the Chaturmukha Brahma cannot fully describe the infinite glory of Lord Venkateswara. What we know and recite is indeed just the "tip of the iceberg" of His Anantha Kalyana Gunas (infinite auspicious qualities). "यतो वाचो निवर्तन्ते अप्राप्य मनसा सह" (Yato vāco nivartante aprāpya manasā saha) "Where words return along with the mind, unable to reach or describe His full glory." His greatness is beyond human vocabulary, yet choosing to sing His praises anyway because it brings us that "eternal bliss" The journey through these slokas highlights the transition from understanding the Lord's authority over time, to His infinite benevolence, and finally to the boundless love that ties Him to His devotees. While we can only see the "tip of the iceberg," the very act of looking at PADMAVATHI-SRINIVASA KALYANA brings Loka Kalyana and personal bliss. Whenever there is an occurrence of Adhika maasam, it is a tradition Brahmotsavam is held twice in that year.

Generally there will be a gap of one month between the two festivals; with the first one held during Bhaadrapada maasam and the second one during Aaswayuja maasam.  

First one as per schedule known as Salakatla (annual) Brahmotsavam that will be held after the transit of Sun into Kanyaa raasi; for nine days with the ninth day coinciding with Sravana Nakshathra.  

Second one known as Navarathri Brahmotsavam will again be held for nine days during Navarathri festival with the ninth day coinciding with Sravana constellation.  Sravana Nakshathra is the parameter for conclusion of both the Brahmotsavams.  

This year owing to the occurrence of Adhika (Jyeshta) maasam, as per lunar calendar Brahmotsavam festival at Tirumala Kshethra is being held twice.  

September 14–23 (Annual Saalakatla Brahmotsavam)  

October 11–20 (Navaratri Brahmotsavam)

ಐಶ್ವರ್ಯಂ ರಾಜಸಮ್ಮಾನಂ ಭಕ್ತಿಮುಕ್ತಿಫಲಪ್ರದಮ್ ॥ 12॥

ವಿಷ್ಣೋರ್ಲೋಕೈಕಸೋಪಾನಂ ಸರ್ವದುಃಖೈಕನಾಶನಮ್ ।

ಸರ್ವೈಶ್ವರ್ಯಪ್ರದಂ ನೄಣಾಂ ಸರ್ವಮಂಗಲಕಾರಕಮ್ ॥ 13॥

ಮಾಯಾವೀ ಪರಮಾನನ್ದಂ ತ್ಯಕ್ತ್ವಾ ವೈಂಕುಂಠಮುತ್ತಮಮ್ ।

ಸ್ವಾಮಿಪುಷ್ಕರಿಣೀತೀರೇ ರಮಯಾ ಸಹ ಮೋದತೇ ॥ 14॥

AMAVASYA: THE SHADOW & THE SCIENCE

Amavasya is the darkest day of the month. On this day Moon will not be visible and it is called as New-Moon day or No-Moon day. On the day of Amavasya both Sun (Pithrukaaraka) and Moon (Maathru kaaraka) conjoin together. Ama means "together" and Vasya means "to dwell." Astronomically, it is the exact 24-hour window where the Sun and Moon "dwell together" in the same celestial longitude.

A lunar month ending with Poornima is called Poornimanta, while one ending with Amavasya is known as Amanta.

A Chaturdashi overlapping with Amavasya is called Sinivali, and an Amavasya overlapping with Pratipada is termed Kuhu. Astrologically, both of these conjunctions are considered malefic (inauspicious).

Amavasya is also classically known as the Darsha Thithi. The word Darsha signifies the astronomical alignment where the Sun and Moon dwell together, rendering the Moon invisible to the Earth.

On the day of Darsha, when the Amavasya Thithi prevails during the afternoon period (Aparahna Vyapini), Thila Tarapana is offered to satisfy the forefathers.

A Solar Eclipse always occurs on an Amavasya day. It is also the significant thithi on which Lord Sri Krishna’s Niryaana (departure from the earthly realm) took place.

The Pithru Devathas serve as the presiding deities of the Amavasya Thithi, making it the most favored and sacred day for ancestor worship.

Culturally, it is common to observe a holy fast on this day. Furthermore, Amavasya holds unique spiritual weight as it constitutes one of the five sacred days of Vishnu Panchaka and stands as a vital astronomical parameter required for the formation of the highly auspicious Ardhodaya Yoga.

Amavasya is universally regarded as inauspicious for performing any Subha-kaarya (auspicious ceremonies) or initiating new business ventures. Instead, it is strictly earmarked for Pitru-kaarya (ancestral rites and offerings).

Furthermore, traditional scriptures dictate that certain actions must be strictly avoided on this day. These prohibitions include undergoing Kshura Karma (shaving or cutting hair/nails), participating in sensual pleasures, and plucking Tulsi leaves (Tulasi dala).

While Amavasya occurs every month, certain new moon days are completely unique and carry immense spiritual and special significance. Among the most notable are Somavati Amavasya (falling on a Monday), Mauni Amavasya (observed in absolute silence), Shani Amavasya (falling on a Saturday), Mahalaya Amavasya (the grand culmination of Pitru Paksha), Bheemana Amavasya, and Grahana Amavasya (coinciding with a solar eclipse).

MahaAlaya Amavasya occurs on the last day of Pithru Paksha in Bhaadrapada Maasa. Mahalaya Amavasya is considered as the Mother of all Amavasyas as it is the favourite day for performing sacred rites to forefathers.

Those who have missed to perform Paksha Sraaddha can perform the same on Mahalaya Amavasya day.

All those who are eligible should give THILA THARPANA (Sarva-pithru) on this sacred day.

Thila daana, Anna Daana, on the day of Amavasya is meritorious.

Reciting Pithru Sookta/Pithru Stuti, Pavamana Sookta on Amavasya day is beneficial and meritorious. Pithrus gets immensely pleased with its parayana.

Performing Thila Homa on the day of Mahalaya Amavasya is highly meritorious, serving as one of the key remedies suggested for Pithrudosha. But remember, do not self-medicate; it should be performed through a learned Brahmana with proper anusandhana. Conducting this ritual at sacred Pithru Kshetras like Gaya, Rameswaram, or Gokarna is immensely auspicious and spiritually rewarding.

Furthermore, specific monthly cycles serve as major cosmic turning points in the Vedic calendar: Maagha Bahula Amavasya is scripturally reckoned as Yugaadi (the anniversary of a cosmic age), while Phalguna Bahula Amavasya is permanently reckoned as Manvaadi (the commencement of a new Manu's epoch).

Ultimately, the strict disciplines and astronomical parameters surrounding Amavasya demonstrate that the Vedic calendar is a precise map of cosmic energies. Far from being a mere date, this thithi requires a conscious shift from outward material pursuits to inward spiritual alignment and ancestral gratitude (Pitru-kaarya). By honoring its specific prohibitions, recognizing unique conjunctions and observing rare cosmic turnings, a seeker aligns harmoniously with the divine cosmic order established by the universe.

The Spiritual Insight: The Power of Inward Stillness

Because the Moon governs our minds, emotions, and tides, its complete absence on Amavasya has a profound psychological and spiritual effect:

The Inward Journey: With no lunar light reflecting outward, our emotional energy naturally turns inward. It is the perfect night for deep meditation, silence, and self-reflection.
Dissolving the Ego: The dark night symbolizes the dissolution of the ego. Just as the moon disappears, we are encouraged to let go of negative thoughts, past baggage, and worldly attachments.
Ancestral Conduits: In the Vedic tradition, the dark alignment opens a subtle portal between our realm and the ancestral realm. Making offerings (Pitru Tarpan) on this day acts as a bridge of gratitude, healing karmic debts across generations.

Amavasya is not a night to be feared; it is a night to be revered. It reminds us that darkness is not the absence of light, but the fertile womb from which new light is born. Thus, Amavasya Thithi has attained a lot of spiritual significance in Hindu religion and is popular as a Pithru Thithi. Far from being just a dark night, it is a profound intersection of astronomical alignment, ancient mythology, and deep spiritual energy.

The Puranic Narrative…

There are seven distinct groups of Pithru Devathas: the Vyrajas, Agnishwatthas, Barhishadas, Sukalas, Angirasas, Suswadhas, and Somapas. Achhoda, the Manasa Puthrika (mindborn daughter) of these Pithru Devathas, possessed immense devotion and respect for them. Once, she performed intense penance dedicated to the Pithru Devathas. Pleased with her prayers, they appeared before her to grant a boon. Upon seeing them, Achhoda became momentarily infatuated with one of the Pithru Devathas named Maavasa. Due to this sudden reaction, she came to be known as Maavasya. However, because Maavasa did not reciprocate her feelings, she was later referred to as Amaavasya. Unfortunately, because of this fleeting, passionate reaction, Achhoda lost her divine status. Violating the rules of the higher realms by desiring a mortal caused Acchoda to instantly lose her divine luster and yogic powers. She began falling from the heavens toward the earthly realm. Seeing her distress, her ancestral fathers (the Pitrus) rushed to her rescue. They intercepted her fall and comforted her. They explained that her desire was a mistake, but because she recognized her error, they would grant her a boon of redemption. Sympathizing with her condition and remaining pleased with her original penance, the Pithru Devathas blessed her with a boon: henceforth, she would be celebrated as the Amavasya Thithi, a day deeply favored by the ancestral spirits. They further decreed that anyone who performs Pithru Kaarya (ancestral rituals) on the day of Amavasya will immensely please the Pithru Devathas, who will in turn bestow them with abundance and prosperity.

By divine Sankalpa (will), Achhoda later took birth on Earth during the 28th Dwapara Yuga. Emerging from the womb of a fish, she was lovingly raised by a fisherman called Vasu (Dasharaja). She was called Matsyagandha and later Satyavati, who gave birth to Bhagawan Vedavyasa in a divine meeting with Sage Parasara. Later, she married King Shantanu of the epic Mahabharata, bearing him two sons, Chitrangada and Vichitraveerya.

Additional Note on Lineage & Scriptural Authority

(As per Mahabharata Tatparya Nirnaya) While secular narratives or surface readings place Satyavati solely in a fisherman’s household, the Madhva Sampradaya clarifies her true royal lineage. Grounded firmly in Sri Madhvacharya’s Mahabharata Tatparya Nirnaya (MBTN), scriptural records reveal that Satyavati's biological father was actually Uparichara Vasu, a highly pious, powerful Kshatriya king of the Chedi kingdom who belonged to the Puru lineage. King Uparichara Vasu was a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu who ruled strictly by the principles of the Satvata Shastra. Through a series of divine events, his seed was swallowed by the cursed Apsara-fish, Adrika, which resulted in the birth of human twins. A fisherman chief (Dasharaja) discovered the babies and presented them to the King. The King adopted the boy—who grew up to establish the mighty Matsya Kingdom—but returned the girl to the chief to be raised because of her unique fish-like odor, henceforth coming to be known as Matsyagandha. Therefore, from a definitive genealogical perspective, Satyavati was a royal Kshatriya princess by birth, even though divine Sankalpa willed her upbringing to be among the fishermen community. The specific scriptural reference from Sri Madhvacharya's Mahabharata Tatparya Nirnaya (MBTN) is found in Chapter 10 (Vyasavataranuvarnanam), specifically spanning Shlokas 43 through 46. Here is the exact contextual breakdown of the verses: Chapter: 10 (Adhyaya 10 — The Descent/Avatar of Lord Vedavyasa) Shlokas 43–44: Lord Narayana explicitly tells Sage Parashara, "My devotee Vasuraja (Uparichara Vasu) has an excellent daughter..." and goes on to describe the mystical sequence where his seed falls into the waters of the Yamuna, only to be consumed by the cursed fish. PITHRU YAGNA - THARPANA VIDHI

Ø THARPANA VIDHI

In the daily schedule (nithya karma) of a devout Hindu; Tharpana is one of the accepted modes of oblation performed to the deities; sages and pithrus that we generally come across during Brahma-Yagna.

Apart from giving tharpana during nithya karma; the maxims prescribe Pithru tharpana to be given on specific days which forms part and parcel of Pithru Yagna.

The ritual Tharpana should be performed only by those who are eligible.

An individual gets eligibility to perform Pithru tharpana only after getting inducted into the concept of Upanayana (Dvija) and after the death of father.

Pithru tharpana should always be performed with Thila (black sesame seeds) except during Brahma Yagna when it should be performed with water.

Tharpana should always be performed wearing Dharbha Pavithra.

In lieu of Dharbha Pavithra one can also use silver ring. Pavithra should be worn to the right hand ring finger. After completing the ritual Pavithra should be removed.

Pithru tharpana/Pinda pradhana should always be performed facing south direction with Yagnopaveetham in apasavya position.

Tharpana should not be given on the day of Ekaadasi aacharana.

Similarly, during the period of Asoucha also tharpana should not be given.

Water used for Aachamanam should not be used for giving tharpana.

Water from Kalasha paathra mixed with Thulasi/Nirmaalya Theertha should be used for giving Pithru tharpana.

On the day of Pithru Tharpana one should take only one time meal. Night meal should be avoided.

In case of Sraaddha Thithi including Mahalaya, meals should be avoided on the previous day night also.

Tharpana and/or Pinda Pradhana have to be done in the order as per the given list.

Tharpana and Pinda Pradhana should be performed only to the deceased and not to the living even though they figure in the eligible list.

Tharpana should not be given to the concerned Pithru till completion of one year after the death.

It is said that by performing Shannavathi sraaddha, Pithrus gets pleased/satisfied for 2000 years.

Apart from the above one is required to perform Thila tharpana to forefathers during Parvakaala on the following days…

Uttaraayana;

Dakshinaayana;

Eclipse days (Solar/Lunar)

Ardhodaya and

Mahodaya and...

Whenever visit to any Theertha Kshethra;

On the day of Pithru/Maathru thithi (annual ceremony)

During Parvakaala; Mahalaya Pithru Paksha; visit to Theertha Kshethra; Thila tharpana should be given to Sarva Pithru (all eligible forefathers); on all other specified days’ tharpana should be given to Dwaadasa Pithru.

During Manvaadi, Yugaadi, Vyatheepaatha, Vaidhruthi, days tharpana is required to be given during Poorvaahnakaala;

on Sankramana, Eclipse, Uttarayana, Dakshinayana days during Parvakaala as mentioned in respective Panchanga.

on the days of Amaavaasya during aparaahnnakaala;

On the day of Pithru/Maathru thithi (annual ceremony) Thila tharpana should be given only to the concerned Varga Thraya and not to the all.

If any of the above mentioned Shannavathi (96) days coincide with the days of Parvadina; Tharpana need not be given twice as later one (Parvakaala) supersedes former in ascending order of

Amaavaasya;

Uttaraayana/Dakshinaayana;

Eclipse (Surya/Chandra Grahana),

Mahodaya/Ardhodhaya;

in order of importance.

Logic is on a single day tharpana should not be given more than once.

If any of the above mentioned 96 days (excluding Amaavaasya; Poorvedyu; Ashtaka; Anvashtaka) + Uttarayana/Dakshinayana falls on Ekaadasi day, tharpana should not be performed. Instead, Pavamana-Sooktha/Pithru-Sooktha parayana should be made;

Strictly speaking during SankrunMahalaya (performing Paksha sraaddha for only one day during Paksha maasa) Tharpana is to be given on the next day. But, in practice it is being given on the same day when Sraaddha is performed.

In case of Theertha/Kshethra Sraaddha, Tharpana is given first and then Sraddha is performed.

Ø Tharpana procedure…

Tharpana should be given with water + black Sesame (Thila) seeds.

Pithru tharpana should always be performed with the right hand.

Take black Thila in to the palm;

pour water from Kalasha with the help of Uddharani (spoon);

drop water along with Thila into the tharpana plate by chanting tharpana manthra so that water should fall from the space in between the index finger and the thumb by tilting the palm to the right side.

While performing Tharpana each Pithru has to be addressed with their name and Gothra.

If name and Gothra of forefathers are not known; they should be pronounced as...

Yagnappa (Male); and

Yagnamma (female);

Gothra to be pronounced as Kaasyapa Gothra.

Male Pithrus are addressed as Sarma and female Pithrus as Dhaam suffixing their names.

The word Asmath should be spelled before the name and Gothra after the name.

> For example:

in case of Father it should be pronounced as Asmath Pitharam; Yagnappa Sarmaanaam Kaasyapa Gothram and

in case of Mother as Asmath Maatharam; Yagnamma Dhaam Kaasyapa Gothraam.

In case of Dwaadasa Pithru; three generations should be addressed as Vasu, Rudra and Aaditya roopa and all others should be addressed as Vasu Roopa.

As we approach the end of Pitru Paksha, it is important to know the Parva Dinas for performing Pitru Karya. In this regard, here is a list of ParvaDinas for performing rituals such as Sraddha, Thila Tarpana, and Pinda Daana, etc. Parva Dinas for Performing Pitru Karya... In general, there are 96 special days in a Hindu calendar year dedicated to performing Pitru Karya (rituals for ancestors), collectively known as Shannavathi (Items 2 to 11 below). Beyond these, there are daily, annual, and specific astronomical occasions to perform these rituals. I. Daily and Annual Rituals - Brahma Yajna – Performed daily. - Pitru Tithi – The annual death anniversary (Kaala Sraddha), performed once a year. II. The 96 Shannavathi Days (Occurring Annually) - Amavasya – The new moon day (12 times a year). - Vyatipata Yoga – An auspicious astrological alignment (12+ times a year). - Vaidhruti Yoga – An auspicious astrological alignment (12+ times a year). - Surya Sankramana – Solar transits, including Dakshinayana and Uttarayana (12 times a year). - Pitru Paksha – The fortnight dedicated to ancestors (15 days a year). - Manvadi – The anniversaries of the creation of different Manvantaras (14 times a year). - Yugadi – The start dates of the four Yugas (4 times a year). - Poorvedyu – The day before the Ashtaka rituals (5 times a year). - Ashtaka – The eighth tithi of the Krishna Paksha in specific months (5 times a year). - Anvashtaka – The day following the Ashtaka rituals (5 times a year). Astronomical and Rare Occasions - Chandra Grahana – Lunar eclipse. - Surya Grahana – Solar eclipse. - Adhika Masa – The extra lunar month added to the calendar (occurs once every three years). - Mahodaya – A rare, highly auspicious astrological conjunction. - Ardhodaya – A rare, highly auspicious astrological conjunction. - Kapila Shashti – An extremely rare solar and planetary alignment. * Footnote on High-Merit Occasions & Ritual methodology... Among the Vyatipata Yogas, Dhanur-Vyatipata Yoga (which occurs annually during Dhanur Masam) holds supreme significance. Performing Pitru Karya on this day is scripturally considered a thousand times more meritorious than doing so even during the rare Ardhodaya Parvakaala. - Ekadashi Aacharana... Except for Amavasya, if any of the above Parva Dinas coincides with Ekaadasi (Aacharana day), Pitru Karya should not be performed. Instead, Pavamana Sukta Parayana is prescribed, which immensely pleases the Pitrus (ancestors). - Modality of Performance: Kaala Sraddha, Pitru Paksha, and Poorvedyu, Ashtaka, Anvashtaka - "Pinda Sahita" Amavasya, - "Aama Sraddha" For all other Parva Dinas listed above: "Thila Tarpana" Brahma Yajna (Daily) - "Jala Tarpana" - Shraddha Kaala (Timing Windows): Amavasya and Kaala Sraddha - Aparaahnna kaala. Pitru Paksha - Kutapa kaala to Aparaahnna kaala. Eclipses (Grahana) and Surya Sankramana - during their specific Parvakaala windows mentioned in Panchanga. All other Parva Dinas mentioned - Poorvaahnna kaala (before noon). - Target Ancestors (Pithru Varga): For Kaala Sraddha, strictly to the respective Varga Thraya (3 generations of maternal or paternal lineages as applicable). Please note: While these guidelines are based on standard scriptural texts as per Madhva Sampradaya, minor variations in practice (Aacharana) may exist. In such cases, please follow your respective Matha Sampradaya.

Teertha & Kshetra Shraddha:

Performing Teertha or Kshetra Shraddha for the departed souls at Punya Kshetras forms an integral part of Pitru Yajna. Whenever a Teertha Shraddha is performed, it must always be targeted toward Sarva Pitru and must include full Pinda Pradana.

Some of the most sacred places prescribed for Kshetra Shraddha include: Kashi, Gaya, Prayaga, Kurukshetra, Ayodhya, Naimisharanya, Badari, Dwaraka, Somnath, Rameswaram, Gokarna, Kapila Theertham (Tirupati), Tirumala, and Pushkar, as well as on the sacred banks of holy rivers like the Godavari, Narmada, Kaveri, Krishna, Tungabhadra, and on the banks of Pushkara-related rivers.

While Vedas are the sacred scripts of Hindu Dharma; Puranas are the backbone of Hindu philosophy which contains essence of Hindu religion, civilization and culture. Sage Sri Vedavyaasa the Divine literary incarnation of Lord Sri Maha Vishnu has played a significant role in the field of Vedic and spiritual literature; whose works have become guiding principles of Hindu religion, philosophy and culture. He compiled 18 great puranas called Ashtadasa Maha Puranas; a great treasure gifted to the mankind. He compiled these puranas to draw the attention of the reader or its listener towards the ultimate goal of Dharma and the Supreme Being Lord Sri ManNarayana. All may not have the right to learn Vedas. It is believed that Sage Vedavyaasa composed these puranas for the sake of those who have no access to Vedas to enlighten them on the spiritual path.

What is Garuda Purana?

Garuda Purana is one of those Ashtaadasa Maha-Puranas composed by Sage Sri Vedavyaasa. It is called Garuda Purana because, it was Garuda the Divine King of Birds who first heard it from Lord Sri Maha Vishnu which was in the form of a dialogue between the two. Later, Garuda recited the same to Sage Kashyapa that percolated down the line. It contains about 19000 slokas and classified as Saattvika Purana. Others in the list are Sri Vishnu Purana, Sri Narada Purana, Sri Padma Purana, Sri Varaha Purana, and Srimad Bhagavatha Purana.

It is difficult to date Garuda Purana; as several revisions would have taken place and latest revision must have taken place during Sri Krishnaavathara when; Sage Sri Vedavyaasa edited and revised all Puranas. Since it was Garuda (the Divine Charioteer of Lord Vishnu), who first heard it from the Primordial Person Lord SriManNarayana; thenceforth the sacred script came to be named after Garuda; referred to as Garuda Purana.

What it deals with?

Like any other Vishnu related Puranas; Garuda Purana also deals with the incarnations of Lord Maha Vishnu, geographical description and origin of the Universe; Creation; Procreation; Genealogy of Gods; Sages and great Kings; Time element; brief about Raamaayana; Mahaabhaaratha; Lord Sri Krishna; about the history of Solar and Lunar dynasties etc..

Apart from the above; Garuda Purana also talks about the origin and propagation of Garuda; description of Shodasa Samskaras; Varnaasrama Dharma; different kinds of Austerities; methods of worship; Praayaschitta (atoning for sins); Divine & Sacred Manthras; study of Gems and Jewels (Navarathnas); rare Gems; various types & characteristics of Salagrama; Navagrahas; Astrology related topics like electional astrology; Saamudrika Saasthra, predictions based on physical traits the science of Physiognomy; Vaasthu Saastra related to Temples and Houses; prominent places of Pilgrimage; various types of Charities and their significance; about Go-daana (donating a cow), Medicine; antidotes etc..

What is its uniqueness?

Uniqueness of Garuda Purana lies in the fact that it is the only sacred text that talks about the life after death, the journey of the soul, death and its aftermath, rebirth or reincarnation. Even the modern science could not break the mystery of death and after; whereas, Garuda Purana has spelled out these realities ages before. Among the Shodasa Samskaaras prescribed in Hindu Dharma for a human being, last one called Anthyeshti samskara or Apara Karma is related to matters pertaining to funeral rites and other ceremonies. This Apara Karma is exclusively and exhaustively covered in Garuda Purana.

Further, Garuda Purana also covers description about the Nether worlds; Yama-Loka; various kinds of Naraka Lokas (Hell); experiences of the Soul when it leaves the body; cycle of countless births the Soul takes; Law of Karma; Fruits of Karma (action); various types of punishments for sins committed; about Moksha (Salvation); detailed description of the Funeral rites to be performed; its procedure including the rituals; followed by the ceremonies starting from death till the completion of one year including Sapindikarana Sraaddha; Asoucha Nirnaya; Sraaddha Vidhi; significance of Kusa Grass (Dharbha); Sesame seeds (Thila); Lavana Daana; significance of Pinda daana; Gaya Sraaddha etc.

Merits from Garuda Purana

As a custom we find in traditional Hindu families, paarayana (reading) of Garuda Purana taking place whenever there is a death in the family till the completion of 13^th day ceremony; called Vaikunta Samaraadhana. Great merits (punya) is acquired from reading or listening to Sri Garuda Purana during that time.

Those who narrate and the one who listen to this sacred Garuda Purana within ten days or even after the death of a person will get absolved from sins and is assured of happiness in this world as well as in the next world.

One who listens to Garuda Purana on the occasion of his Parents death, such parents would attain Mukthi and also he will be blessed with good progeny.

Listening to Garuda Purana; one will get rid of sorrow; suffering and will be blessed with peace and prosperity.

By listening to Garuda Purana, a Brahmin will be bestowed with Vidya; a Kshatriya with Land; a Vysya with wealth and a Suudra will get refined.

Lord Sri Maha Vishnu would get pleased if the narrator of Garuda Purana is worshiped and it is as good as worshiping Lord Sri Hari. Giving charity of any of the Shodasa Daanas to a Brahmin is prescribed after listening or paarayana (reading) of Garuda Purana.

Listening to or reading of Garuda Purana during Mahaalaya Pithru Paksha is sacred and meritorious that pleases the Pithru Devathas (Forefathers).

Donating the sacred book of Garuda Purana to a Brahmin is also highly meritorious.

By reading Garuda Purana one will get an opportunity to refine him-self and move on the righteous path.

Myth & Realities of Garuda Purana

There is an apprehension among people that, the text of Garuda Purana is inauspicious and hence can not be read or the book be kept at home or should be read only on the occasion of death at home. People hesitate to keep this sacred text at their homes or read it because of its fearful subject matter. It is only a misconception due to the contents of Garuda Purana. Reading Garuda Purana will definitely change the mindset of an evil-doer or a sinner. Just because it deals with death and its aftermath, it is incorrect to tag it as inauspicious.

In Bhagawad-Geeta sloka # 27 chapter # 2 (Saankhya Yoga); Lord Sri Krishna says that, Jaatasya hi dhruvo mrutyu…(indeed certain is death for the born and it is inevitable). In fact death is a reality though we hesitate to accept because of lack of its knowledge. Death grins only at those who have no understanding and that it has no pain for those who understand its implications and working. Death can no more be a threat to a wise man. Death is a major learning experience.

In fact the entire epic of Garuda Purana is in the form of glorious dialogue between Lord Sri Maha Vishnu and his Divine mount Lord Garuda. When it was explained or narrated by Lord Sri Maha Vishnu Himself, how can it be inauspicious? Even in Bhagawadgeeta; Lord Sri Krishna makes a reference to the law of Karma; death and its realities; reincarnation etc. But we don’t consider Bhagawadgeeta as inauspicious; in fact we adore it. A script that mentions about significance of Thulasi; Cow; Thila (sesame); Kusa (Dharbha) is always auspicious and we find all these referred in Garuda Purana. Thila and Dharbha have emerged out from the body of Lord Maha Vishnu.

One need not get scared with the contents of Garuda Purana either to read or to listen. It can be treated as learning; that enhances one’s spiritual knowledge to discipline himself and to follow the righteous path. Garuda Purana acts as a speed breaker for a person who is driving his life rashly. It can be treated as a caution for wrongdoers and acts as a direction to avoid committing sins. Is it not good to read Garuda Purana and understand its contents and implications when one is alive? instead of some one may be kith and kin reading it after the death when one can not listen.

I suggest that every one should read the sacred text of Garuda Purana at least once in their life time and there is nothing inauspicious about it and it is only an illusion.

The Sacred Tradition of Kāka Bali (Vāyasa Bali) During Pitru Śrāddha - The Ritual Context and Philosophical Meaning... In Hindu tradition, there is an ancient and unbroken sampradāya (custom) of offering sanctified food (Anna or Pinda) to crows at the conclusion of ancestral rites (Pitru Śrāddha). This ritual offering is known as Kāka Bali or Vāyasa Bali. It is rooted in the firm spiritual belief that when a crow consumes the offered food, the departed ancestors (Pitrus) residing in the subtle realms achieve absolute gratification (Trupti). Crows are believed to possess a unique spiritual sensitivity, acting as energetic intermediaries, messengers, and conveyors of food between our earthly plane (Bhūloka) and the ancestral realm (Pitru Loka). Feeding them is therefore viewed as directly feeding and honoring our departed ancestors who may manifest in this form. The Scriptural Origin: King Marutta’s Yajna and Lord Yama's Boon... The divine authority given to crows to satisfy the Pitrus originates from a profound boon (vachana) granted by Śri Yamadharmarāja (the Lord of Justice and Death). This legend is documented in the Uttara Kānda of the Vālmīki Rāmāyana (Sarga 18). During the era of the Rāmāyana, the fierce demon king Rāvana was rampaging across the earth. At that time, a virtuous king of the Sūryavamśa (Solar Dynasty) named Marutta was performing a grand Maheśvara Yajna presided over by the devas. When Rāvana arrived to disrupt the sacred sacrifice, the Brahmaadi Devatas (the gods), realizing they could not directly engage him due to his celestial boons, sought refuge by temporarily disguising themselves as birds. In this divine strategy, Lord Indra transformed into a peacock, Kubera into a lizard, Varuna into a swan, and Śri Yamadharmarāja assumed the guise of a CROW. After Rāvana departed and the sacrifice concluded successfully, the grateful deities returned to their original forms and bestowed glorious blessings upon the respective bird species that shielded them. Lord Yama blessed the crow with a definitive vachana, decreeing that whenever humans perform Śrāddha kārya (ancestral ceremonies) or death rituals, the Pitrus in his realm will find absolute peace and satiety the moment the crow consumes the offered Pinda. The sacred verses commemorating this event state: ये च मद्विषयस्थास्तु मानवाः क्षुधयार्दिताः । त्वयि भुक्ते तु तृप्तास्ते भविष्यन्ति सबान्धवाः ॥ Ye ca mad-viṣayasthāstu mānavāḥ kṣudhayārditāḥ | Tvayi bhukte tu tṛptāste bhaviṣyanti sabāndhavāḥ || ಯೇ ಚ ಮದ್ವಿಷಯಸ್ಥಾಸ್ತು ಮಾನವಾಃ ಕ್ಷುಧಯಾರ್ದಿತಾಃ | ತ್ವಯಿ ಭುಕ್ತೇ ತು ತೃಪ್ತಾಸ್ತೇ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಂತಿ ಸಬಾಂಧವಾಃ || Translation: "Those human beings in my realm who are afflicted by hunger will become thoroughly satisfied, along with all their kinsmen, the moment food is consumed by you (the crow)." The Rāmāyana Anecdote: Jayanta's Curse and Mystic Vision A secondary scriptural narrative elaborating on the crow's mystical attributes is found in the Sundara Kānda of the Vālmīki Rāmāyana (the Chūdāmani Pradāna episode). During their exile (Vanavāsa), Śri Sītā Devī was peacefully resting her head on Lord Śri Rāma's lap. At that moment, Indra’s son, Jayanta, descended to earth disguised as a crow and discourteously pecked Sītā Devī’s foot, disturbing her comfort. Awakening to find his beloved injured, an incensed Śri Rāma recognized the disguised prince and unleashed a blade of Dharba grass, empowering it with the unstoppable Brahmāstra. Jayanta fled across the three worlds but found no shelter. Returning in total surrender to the feet of Prabhu Śri Rāma, he begged for mercy. Since a Brahmāstra cannot be recalled in vain, Jayanta voluntarily sacrificed his right eye to save his life. Lord Rāma declared: "From this day forward, you shall possess only one functional eye, shifting a single eyeball between two sockets at any given time." This scripturally accounts for the unique, shifting gaze of the crow. However, moved by Jayanta’s genuine repentance, Lord Rāma also blessed him with a transcendental boon: "Whatever remains invisible to ordinary two-eyed creatures shall be completely visible to you." Through this divine blessing, crows were granted the supernatural capability to perceive disembodied souls (Jeevaatmas) navigating the subtle dimensions of the pretayoni (ghostly state), pishāchayoni, and Pitruyoni (the realm of the ancestors). When the crows are fed and satisfied, Jayanta is pleased, and they faithfully transport messages and spiritual merits straight to the Pitru Loka. Do planets rule us, or does our Karma?

In the Mahabharata's Anushasana Parva, Goddess Uma asks Lord Shiva this exact question.

This text is from the Uma-Maheshwar Samvad (a dialogue between Goddess Uma/Parvati and Lord Shiva) from the Anushasana Parva of the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

The primary theme of the passage is the philosophical debate between Karma (personal actions) and Astrology (the influence of planets/stars). It concludes that human actions are supreme, and planets only act as indicators, not the direct doers of good or bad fortune.

1. Goddess Uma's Question (उमोवाच / Uma Uvacha)

Sanskrit Verse: भगवन् भगनेत्रघ्न मानुषाणां विचेष्टितम्...
Hindi Translation Summary in Image: Uma asks Lord Shiva: "O Lord! You believe that the good or bad conditions humans face are entirely the result of their own past actions (Karma). I have heard your viewpoint clearly. However, in the world, it is observed that people attribute all their good and bad fortunes to the influence of planets (Graha) and stars (Nakshatra), and they constantly worship them. Is this belief correct? O Divine One! This is my doubt. Please clear this doubt for me."

2. Lord Shiva's Response (श्रीमहेश्वर उवाच / Shri Maheshwar Uvacha)

The connection between Kapila Chintana and ancestral rituals becomes exceptionally magnified during Pithru Paksha (the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada Maasa).

During this period, the cosmos opens a window for a rare, generational astrological phenomenon known as the Kapila Shashti Yoga.

This yoga requires a perfect, rare confluence of seven specific astronomical constants:

It humbles the seeker to realize that the wheel of time (Kāla-Chakra) operates strictly under the independent sovereignty of Medineepatih.

Occurrence of Kapila Shashti is very rare, may be once in a life time and if it occurs, it occurs only during Bhadrapada maasa Krishna Paksha (Pithru Paksha).

To bring this high cosmological philosophy into daily practice, the great Haridasa saint Sri Vijaya Dasaru, in his celebrated Kapila Devara Stotra Suladi, bridges scriptural math with direct, transformative Sadhana. He reveals that chanting the name of the Lord KAPILA (Kapila Bhagavantha) seven times at dawn brings direct, unyielding armor:

ಕಪಿಲ ಕಪಿಲೆಯೆಂದು ಪ್ರಾತಃಕಾಲದಲೆದ್ದು ಸಪುತ ಸಾರಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನುಡಿದ ಮಾನವನಿಗೆ |
ಅಪಜಯ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಕ್ಲೇಷಗಳೊಂದಿಲ್ಲ ಅಪರಿಮಿತ ಸೌಖ್ಯ ಅವನ ಕುಲಕೋಟಿಗೆ ||

apajaya modalAda klESagaLoMdilla aparimita sauKya avana kulakOTige ||”

A devout soul who wakes at dawn and anchors his mind in Kapila-naamaka Paramatma Chintana seven times consecutively (sapta sArige) will never face defeat (apajaya), will shatter all structural obstacles on their path of self-realization, and will secure aparimita saukhya—transcendent prosperity—for their entire ancestral lineage (vamsha).

Uncovering past lives is an impossibility. Instead, astrologers often construct elaborate narratives based entirely on current natal charts—a lucrative strategy used to exploit seekers with expensive past-life consultations.

This brings us to the concept of Moksha, a state far beyond common understanding. Attaining Parama Pada is an exceedingly rare spiritual feat, accomplished by perhaps only one individual in a millennium. Rather than getting caught in these esoteric distractions, one should focus on the absolute worship of the Supreme God—Hari Sarvottama—SriManNarayana.

Ultimately, this path isn't found in expensive readings or chasing the rare feat of Moksha; it is found in complete surrender to His divine will, whether He deems us ready for His eternal abode or commands our return to the cycle of rebirth.

True spiritual growth is never found in commercialized mysticism or spiritual ego—it is found only in the quiet humility of devotion and surrender.

Who is ANANTHA?

What does the divine term Anantha indicates?

Anantha is not only a name but also one of the most important attributes (ANANTATA) of
ANANTHA KALYANA GUNA PARIPOORNA
Lord Vishnu;
the one who has countless number of auspicious/meritorious qualities/attributes which even Goddess Lakshmi Devi cannot count.

Anantha means the one...

who is all pervasive,
who is eternal,
who is beyond all boundaries and
for whom there is no limit either by space, time or location

He is the one who has;

infinite number of forms and
who dwells in the entire Universe.
who is invincible and omnipresent.
His glory is infinite.
He is highly meritorious among the meritorious.
No one can describe or define Him precisely.

He is also popularly called as PadmaNabHa the one who has a Lotus like navel or the one who has Lotus in the navel. AnantHa PadManabHa is none other than Lord Vishnu the Supreme God.

The lotus stalk that emerged from His navel/naabhi at the time of universal dawn, unfurled into a magnificient lotus (Padma/Kamala) in the midst of which appeared Lord Brahma that marks the beginning of Padma Kalpa.

As PadmanaAbha, Bhagawan Vishnu is the primordial and supreme Prajapathi (the one who procreates) the one who has given birth to Srushtikartha Brahma. 

He is Damodara the one whose abdomen is the abode for the entire universe or the one in whose belly rests the entire universe; the one on whose support the entire Universe is rested.
He is Creator of the Universe, whose womb is the source of origin of the Universe, Brahmaadi Devatas and Jeevas. He is the cause of the universe, directly responsible for creation of everything in the universe. 
There cannot be any other cause other than Vishnu for creation of the universe. He manifests himself first before creation of the universe.
jaṅgamājaṅgamaṁ cedaṁ jagannārāyaṇōdbhavam
(जङ्गमाजङ्गमं चेदं जगन्नारायणोद्भवम्)
Sages (Rushis), Pitrus, Devatas, Pancha Bhootas, great elements, livings things, non-living things, movable, immovable have all originated from the Supreme God, Hari Sarvottama - SriManNaAraAyana;
Like featus gets nourishment through the umbilical chord when it is in Mother’s womb, similarly Padmanabha is the great nourisher supporter (Dhatu) of the universe, the vital force and sustaining power of all beings. He is the subtlest (Dhatu) without which no existence is ever possible. 
He is the substratum for the world, the one who is the support to the universe and the one who is the ultimate support (DhaAturUttama)
He is the PUSHTI the vital force and sustaining power of all beings - DhaAta - VidHaAta - DhaAturUttama.
He is called AnantHa PadManabHa, Vishnu the Hari Sarvottama in reclining posture the one who rests on the mighty Aadisesha.

➡️ Anantha Padmanabha Vratha (Tit-bits) - Significance of # 14 in Ananta Padmanabha Vratha.

It is performed on the 14th Lunar day Chaturdasi during Bhadrapada Maasa.

This vratha is performed for 14 years before it is concluded with Udyaapana.

Lord Vishnu is worshiped with 14 varieties of flowers, fruits and dishes.

Another significant feature in this vratha is worshiping Lord Anantha with a red coloured silk thread having 14 knots known as Thora.

A special sweet dish made with wheat flour and jaggery is prepared in 28 # and half of it is given to a Brahmana after Nivedana to Lord Anantha.

In the universe we have 14 worlds (Chaturdasa bhuvanas); seven above including earth and seven below the earth. Lord Vishnu (Anantha) is the Supreme God of this universe.

In the concept of kAlaGanana (Time element) we have 14 Manvantharas in one Kalpa and KaAlaPurusha Lord Vishnu (Anantha) is the presiding Deity who holds all these Manvantharas;

Chaturdasi thithi should be UdayaVyapni and if it is associated with Pournami thithi it is to be preferred and considered as auspicious,sacred for performing Anantha Padmanabha Vratha.

Donating a Cow (Gau-dana) on this day is considered as highly sacred and meritorious.

Details of Anantha Padmanabha Vratha Kalpa are mentioned in Bhavishyottara Purana.

Lord Sri Krishna narrated the significance of Sri Anantha Padmanabha Vratha to Dharmaraja. On the advice and direction of Lord Sri Krishna, Dharmaraja performed this Vratha during their exile in forests.

In this vratha, Lord Vishnu is worshiped in the posture of Anantha (reclining on Aadisesha) with shodasa upachaara pooja.

Seven # Dharbha (Kusa grass) are tied together representing Lord Anantha with seven hoods.

Those who perform this austerity as per norms with total devotion and sincerity will be bestowed with multiple merits viz. Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha.

the thousand headed Serpent God the seat on which Anantha Padmanabha (Lord Vishnu) rests in his abode Sri Vaikunta.

ANANTHA is vibhooti roopa of Lord Sri Krishna who says in Bhagawadgita (Vibhoothi Yoga) that He is the Anantha among the Naga Sect.

➡️ Ancient temples of Lord Anantha-Padmanabha

There is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Sri Anantha Padmanabha at Sri Kshethra KUDUPU near Mangalore which is said to be in existence since Krita Yuga.

ANANTHA-SAYANAM at Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) in Kerala;

Dedicated to Lord Anantha at Ananthagiri about 75 km from Hyderabad city. Here the Lord is said to have manifested as a Salagrama Shila who appears in Trimurthi Swaroopa of Anantha-Narasimha-Srinivasa. It is said that Sage Markandeya had performed penance at this place.

RANGANATHA kshetras on the banks of the holy river Kaveri at....

Sri Rangam (near Trichy),

Srirangapatna (near Mysore) and

Shivana Samudra (about 100 km from Bangalore near Mandya on the way to Mysore);

All the three temples have Lord Vishnu in reclining form resting on Anantha (Bhujaga sayana). Posture of the Deity at the three temples is more or less same.

We come across this personality VAAMANA of the Supreme Godhead Lord Vishnu that was fifth in the line of Dasavatharas. This avathara took place during Tretha Yuga before Sri Parashurama Avathara.

Lord VaAmana was born as son of Sage Kashyapa (Kashyapa Prajapathi) and his wife Adithi in accordance to the penance performed by the couple and prayers of IndraAdi Devatas.

He was known as VAMANA because he was dwarf in form at the beginning. While suppressing the pride and vanity of King Bali, He was known as THRIVIKRAMA when He grew to a gigantic size and conquered the three worlds, Earth, Upper worlds and Nether worlds with just three paces of his foot. Born to Sage Kasyapa and Adithi, He was also referred as UPENDRA the younger brother of Indra. UPA also means 'above' indicating that He is much much superior (AteEndra) to Indra, He is the Supreme God Vishnu - Hari Sarvottama.

Apart from DasaAvathra we come across all the three names of VaAmana (Thrivikrama, Vamana and Upendra) in Chaturvimshati Kesavaadi vYuHa ruupas of Lord Vishnu with interchange in holding of Ayudhas.

An exclusive Purana named after Lord Vaamana called Sri Vaamana Purana scripted by Lord & Sage Sri Vedavyaasa forms part of the 18 great Puranas called Ashtaadasa Puraanas.

Sri Venkatesha Stotram (Brahmanda Purana) extolls Lord Srinivasa (Venkateswara) as, "Varaaho VAaMANAschaiva Naaraayana Adhokshajah"

Vamana (Lord Vishnu) is AteEndriyaH - the one who is beyond description (Anirdeshya) beyond our perception and reach of our senses; He is Adhokshajah; the one who is beyond description, undefinable, inexplicable, immeasurable.

It is impossible to pin-point/specify His roopa/appearance; He is Larger than the largest (Viswam) and smaller than the smallest conceivable. These attributes/qualities of the Supreme God are visible/re-established in VamanaAvatara.

वामनो बुद्धिदाता च द्रव्यस्थो वामनः स्मृतः।

वामनस्तारकोभाभ्यां वामनाय नमो नमः॥

vAmano buddhidAtA cha dravyastho vAmanaH smRutaH|

vAmanastArakoBhABhyAm vAmanAya namo namaH ||

(Dadhi-Vamana stothram)

[Salutations again and again to Lord Vamana, who is the giver of wisdom and intelligence, and who exists as the essence of all material wealth. I bow to Vamana, the radiant savior who delivers his devotees from the cycle of birth and death.]

SIGNIFICANCE/UNIQUENESS OF VAMANA AVATHARA

Lord Vishnu took this avathara in order to suppress the arrogance, vanity and pride of Emperor Bali (Bali Chakravarthi) and to restore the glory, power and authority of Lord Indra over the Heaven who had lost his power and kingdom (Swarga) to King Bali.

Uniqueness of this Avathara is that the Lord did not use any weapon. The only weapon he used was that of imploring King Bali in accordance to the Brahmanic (Brahmachari) form he had attained.

Lord Vishnu as Vaamana did not kill King Bali even though he was an Asura. He conquered him in a Vedic way with his intelligence.

Lord had to resort to this strategy due to the promise/boon he had made to his beloved devotee Prahlada not to kill any of his descendants. Bali was grandson of Prahlada.

"HARI SARVOTTAMATVA" re-established in VAMANA avatara;

SARANAAGATHA VATSALA - This attribute/quality of the Supreme God Vishnu re-established in Vamana Avatara;

वामन वामन माणव वेष दैत्य कुलान्तक कारण रूप ॥

Vāmana vāmana māṇava veṣa daitya kulāntaka kāraṇa rūpa

["Oh Lord Vamana, who has assumed the form of a human Brahmin boy! You are the cause behind all creation who takes form for a divine purpose, and you are the destroyer of the pride and boons of the demon king."]

This line captures the core philosophy of the Vamana avatara. Vishnu took a seemingly powerless, small human form (manava vesha) for a cosmic reason (karana rupa) to outsmart and subdue the all-powerful demon king Bali, thereby restoring cosmic balance.

अक्लेशादन्नसिद्ध्यर्थं ज्ञानसिद्ध्यर्थमेव च ।

akleśād-anna-siddhyarthaṁ jñāna-siddhyartham-eva ca

[This hymn is chanted in the morning (Prātah-kāle) so that a devotee may effortlessly obtain their daily bread/nourishment without painful struggle, while simultaneously gaining pure spiritual knowledge.]

Vamana roopa of Paramatma is meditated upon as the Anna-Abhimani devata (the presiding deity over food, nourishment, and physical sustenance). He is the inner controller who ensures that living beings receive nourishment to maintain their physical bodies for spiritual practice.

VAMANA AVATARA - VISHNU PADODBHAVI GANGA -AVATHARANA

Upon the successful completion of King Maha Bali's ritual land donation, Lord Vamana manifested His awe-inspiring cosmic form as Trivikrama. With His very first stride, the Supreme Lord measured the entirety of the Earth and the nether worlds.

His second monumental step pierced through the celestial realms, reaching the absolute zenith of the universe—Satya Loka, the sacred abode of Lord Brahma. As the Lord's foot reached this highest plane, divine, sacred waters emanated directly from His lotus feet.

Beholding the supreme foot of Sri ManNarayana, Lord Brahma reverently washed it with these waters and carefully collected the sanctified liquid inside His Kamandalu (sacred water pot). This celestial water, having originated from the touch of the Lord's lotus foot, became eternally revered as Vishnu Padodbhavi (Goddess Ganga). From that moment on, she resided in the heavens as the celestial river, Swarga Ganga.

Thrivikrama roopa of Bhagawan Vishnu is His AchintyaAdbhuta Shakti displayed during VamanaAvathara. ACHINTYA is one of the attributes of Bhagawan Vishnu who is incomprehensible, having inconceivable form and performing inconceivable actions. (Sri Vishnu Sahasranama Stothram sloka # 89)

This unfathomable attribute achintyadbhutashakti is an ever-present Reality of Bhagawan Vishnu in all his forms and incarnations.

Sri Jagannatha Dasaru (1728-1809) is considered as an incarnation of none other than SaHlaAda (brother of Prahlada RaAyaru) during Krutha Yuga; who was born as Salya Maharaja (MahaBharata) during Dwapara Yuga and as Jagannatha Dasaru in Kaliyuga. His poorvasrama name was Srinivasacharya.

An eminent scholar and learned in Dvaita philosophy, Sri GuruRayaru (Mantralaya Guru Saarvabhouma Sri Raghavendra Swamy) was his Swaroopoddharaka Guru. Sri JagannathaDasaru in his poorvaashrama (Sreenivasacharya) had his Shastra Vidya from Sri Varadendra Theertharu (an eminent Saint in Sri Raghavendra Matha parampara) when he was Sri Balaramacharya in his poorvaashrama at Mantralaya Kshethra.

Sri Puranadara Dasaru - Sri Vijaya Dasaru - Sri Jagannatha Dasaru and Sri Gopala Dasaru together are called DaAsa Chatushtaya - the four stalwarts of Haridasa tradition, who have played a significant role in spreading the philosophy of Hari Sarvottama - VaAyu Jeevottama.

HarikathaMruthasAra composed by Sri Jagannatha Dasaru is a jewel in the crown of his literary works which is considered as an essence of Dvaita - TattvavaAda. It is called an encyclopaedia of Madhva philosophy definitely considered as a reference book respected by many eminent scholars and Saints.

It contains 32 cantos having 988 poems in a highly poetic/literary style meant for novice understanding of common man. It contains the essence of Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagawadgita in a poetic style.

Sri Jagannatha Dasaru bridged the vacuum between Sanskrit learning & Kannada writing for the benefit of the common man through his magnum opus, HariKathAmruthasAra.

It is pertinent to note that this Kannada work has special honour of having a commentary in Sanskrit by Sankarshana Wodeyar a noted Madhva Saint.

HariKathAmruthaSAra is a celestial poem, encompasses the great Indian philosophic writings of Vedas, Upanishads & Bhagawadgita. The principles of man-god relationship enunciated in Brahma Sutra are also lucidly explained.

If Sri JagannathaDasaru is author of Sri HarikathaAmruthasaara, it was Sri VijayaDasaru who was the man behind its origin.

 Significance of KANYA MAASAM 
The Solar Month (17.09.2026 to 17.10.2026)

In Sanatana sampradaya we find two types of calendars being followed viz. Solar Calendar known as Sauramana and Lunar calendar known as Chaandramana.

In Solar Calendar the months derive their names based on the transit of Sun in a particular zodiac sign and in Lunar calendar it is based on the constellation (Nakshatra) occurring (at/nearer) on the full moon day (Pournami).

We have 12 houses in the zodiac starting from Aries and ending with Pisces. Movement of Sun from one sign to the other in the zodiac is reckoned as Sankranthi or Sankramana.

The period between two successive solar transits (sankramana) or the time taken by Sun to pass through a zodiac sign is known as Soura or Solar month.  One complete cycle of Sun around the zodiac starting from Aries and ending with Pisces is known as Solar year.

According to Sauramana when Sun transits into a zodiac sign that month is denoted with the name of that raasi/sign. For example, when Sun transits into Aries (Mesha Raasi) it is known as Mesha Maasa. Solar calendar will be starting from Mesha Maasa and ending with Meena Maasa.

All Sun transits (Surya Sankramana) are Parvakaala. Among the Sun transits known as Surya Sankramana, certain transits are given special significance. For example,

Mesha Sankramana – Beginning of Solar New Year;
Karkataka Sankramana – Beginning of Dakshinayana;
Kanya Sankramana – Pithru Paksha;
Dhanus Sankramana – Beginning of Dhanurmasa;
Makara Sankramana – Beginning of Uttarayana;

Mesha Sankramana (Transit of Sun into Mesha Raasi) and Thula Sankramana (transit of Sun into Thula Raasi) are called VISHUVAT Punyakaala;

Solar month KANYAMAASAM [when Sun is transiting the zodiac sign Kanya (Virgo)] is dear to Paramaatma as well as to Pithrus.

Solar month Kanya Maasam is the sacred month Bhagawan Vishnu (Sreenivaasa) descended on Tirumala Kshethra in the constellation of Sravana nakshatra coinciding with which, preceding nine days is celebrated as World famous TIRUMALA SRIVARI Bramhotsavam.

Almost on parallel days another famous Nine day festivals called SharanNavarathri - DeviNavaratri is celebrated during Kanyamaasam.

KanyaMaasam is also the sacred Solar month Sri MukhyaPraana (#VaayuDevaru) took His third Avathara in Kaliyuga as MADHVA (Hanuma-Bheema-Madhva)

The Full Moon day in the month of Bhadrapada is sacredly known as Praustapadi. Ending with this auspicious day, a period of 15 days starting from Bhadrapada Sukla Pratipada is strictly prescribed for the intense study, contemplation, and discourse (Pravachana/Shravana) of the BhaAgavatha Purana. The Context of the 15-Day Timeline: While many people associate the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of Bhadrapada with Mahalaya Paksha (ancestor worship), the Sukla Paksha (bright fortnight) leading up to the Full Moon (Prausthapadi Purnima) is specifically designated for Bhagavata Parayana. The Reason: According to tradition, it is believed that immersing oneself in the Bhagavata during this time mirrors the spiritual liberation (Mukti) attained by King Parikshit under the guidance of Sage Shukacharya. The Essence of Bhagavatham & the Glory of BHAGAVANTHA Bhagavatham means the sacred script which deals exclusively with the glory of BHAGAVANTHA, who is none other than the Supreme God VISHNU, the ultimate BHAGAVAN. To understand His true nature, Sri Vishnu Sahasranaama Stothram describes Vishnu as BHAGAVAN in sloka #60. He is the one who is worthy of worship, holy, divine, and venerable. This absolute definition of "Bhagavan" is perfectly corroborated by Sri VedaVyasa's father, Sage Parasara, in the Vishnu Purana (6.5.74): ऐश्वर्यस्य समग्रस्य वीर्यस्य यशसः श्रियः । ज्ञानवैराग्ययोश्चैव षण्णां भग इतीङ्गना ॥ Aiśvayasya samagrasya vīryasya yaśasaḥ śriyaḥ | Jñānavairāgyayoścaiva ṣaṇṇāṁ bhaga itiṅganā || This scriptural definition confirms He is "Bhagavan" because He possesses in infinite opulence a blend of six great attributes (Shad-gunas): - jnaAna (Omniscience/Knowledge) - bAla (Strength/Omnipotence) - aisHvarya (Sovereignty/Lordship) - viIrya (Virility/Heroism) - sHakti (Power/Energy) - tEjas (Splendour/Radiance) Furthermore, He is the ultimate possessor of divine and auspicious qualities, functioning with: - Comprehensive control over everything (sovereignty/lordship); - All capabilities to do, undo, and change anything & everything; - All accomplishments (Yashass / Absolute Fame); - Bountiful riches and boundless prosperity (Shri); - All knowledge in its absolute, full form; and - Total dispassionateness (non-attachment/vairagya). He is BHAGAVAN (Bhagavanta) Vishnu, the Supreme Independent God — HariSarvottama. The month of Bhadrapada is ruled by the form of Hrishikesha (the Lord of the senses), making this Chintana the perfect way to anchor our wandering minds at His lotus feet. The Structure & Philosophy of the King of Puranas While dealing with all the other salient features required of a Maha-Purana, Sri MadbHagavatHam is universally considered the King of all Puranas. It provides an exclusive, beautiful, and very elaborate coverage of Bhagawan Vishnu's supreme incarnation as SRI KRUSHNA. This SriMadBhagavatha Purana is a pristine SaAttvika Purana composed by Bhagawan Sri VedaVyasa, containing 18,000 verses divided into 12 Cantos called Skandhas. To help souls grasp its innermost truths without misinterpretation, SriMadBhagavatha Tatparya NIrnaya was composed by Sri Madhvacharya. This monumental work is one of his 37 jewels (SarvaMoola Grantha) which systematically re-establishes the absolute philosophy of HARI-SARVOTTAMATVA, proving that the Lord remains completely flawless (Nirdosha) even during His human-like earthly pastimes. Practical Path: SRI KRUSHNACHARITRA MANJARI For the benefit of seekers in this age, the great Mantralaya GuruSaArvabhouma Sri Raghavendra Swamy (Sri Guru RaAyaru) compressed the vast, nectar-like story of Sri Krushna’s life (primarily the detailed 10th Canto/Dasama Skandha) into just 28 slokas in his sacred script SRI KRUSHNACHARITRA MANJARI. Parayana (recitation) of this precise, potent, and sacred hymn during this Praushtapadi period is highly meritorious.
