Good photographers try to be prepared for almost any contingency. Unfortunately, if you tried to carry everything you'd need to meet every contingency in the field, you'd have to pack like a Bedouin trader.

Many times that simply isn't possible and other times it's not desirable. So the seasoned photographer learns to be resourceful. Here are a few miscellaneous tips that can save your back, particularly on short trips near home.

A Monopod

In all but the most extreme lighting situations a monopod can substitute nicely for a tripod and is a lot easier to carry. With practice you'll be able to hold a monopod nearly as stable as a tripod, for a short time anyway.

Another trick for stabilizing a monopod is to wrap the camera strap around your upper arm and push on the monopod while exerting gentle backward pressure on the strap. Similarly, you can place a large clamp on your monopod and use it as a shoulder brace, almost like a gun mount. It might look a little funny but it works surprisingly well.

Working In Sand

For those times you have to drag a tripod to the beach or sandy area, grab three tennis balls on the way out the door. Cut a hole big enough for your tripod leg and fit a tennis ball over each end.

The tennis balls won't sink in the sand, will keep most of the grit out of the end of your tripod leg and you can throw them away when you're finished.

Another great thing about working at the beach is you don't need to carry sand bags, just bring bags. There's usually plenty of sand already on the beach. Those are priceless for weighting reflectors, which tend to act like a sail in ocean breezes.

Bring A Cooler

But leave the ice packs at home. A cooler has several advantages over an equipment case in many situations. They're solid, many have a handle and wheels, and you can sit or stand on them in a pinch. If you lose or break it, you're only out about $40.

You can still carry drinks with the camera gear, but carefully. Get those drink cozies you put in the freezer. Those will keep your drinks cold without bringing down the temp too much in the cooler. The last thing you want to do is bring cold optics or a camera out into warm, muggy atmosphere. Expect instant condensation if you do.

Carry a Bag of Rubber Bands

They're just so handy for so many things and so easy to carry. You can use them for emergency repairs and to keep papers from flying away.

A fat rubber band is handy for dislodging a stuck filter. Wrap the rubber band around the edge of the filter and that should give you enough grip to get it loose.

And, if you're stuck waiting outside a courthouse waiting for a photo op, they're also endlessly entertaining for taunting your fellow photographers.

Incident Light Meter

Many photographers still carry a light meter, even in the days of high end digital SLRs. If you're packing light you can use a styrofoam cup over the end of your lens and use your camera's light meter, hold it in place with one of your rubber bands.

Note that cups do come in different thicknesses, so you may want to calibrate yours using the Sunny 16 rule before you leave.

Record the exposure at the subject, then walk back to shoot the picture.

Balance of lighting

Sometime extraordinary lighting or less lighting can destroy the shot. Photographers know that light could be friend or enemy. Of course, without it, there's no photo. If you have too much light then there is still no photo. That is because an evenly lit photo is little more than a dull snapshot. Nothing stands out. Nothing is special because you see everything. Use lines to lead your viewer to your main point of interest.

When you have a river, road, path or fence line in your photo, make sure it leads your viewer into your image to a point of interest rather than out of the side or away from your main point of interest. In some cases your lines are in fact your point of interest. A good example would be a river or wilderness trail.

Another example would be a set of railroad tracks. When your main subject are the lines themselves the area they lead your eye to is referred to as the vanishing point. Take your viewer on a journey with the use of lines and end the journey with an interesting conclusion. Another example is, when you are photographing a river or stream start with your stream in the foreground and try to include a mountain peak, interesting rock formation or a waterfall at the vanishing point.

Converging lines always convey a feeling of depth, and can be especially striking when arranged on a diagonal. Here again try to include an interesting subject at the point of convergence.

Curving lines are softer and more sensuous in appeal. And be sure not to forget that a line can be a circle, spiral or an arch too.

Horizontal lines to imply calmness and tranquility.

An obviously suitable horizontal composition would be a beach with golden sands, blue sea and horizon. Be sure to compose you photograph with your horizontal line or horizon either in the top or bottom third of your image. Use either the sky or the foreground as your main composition. I can not say you should never have your horizon in the center but, in most case this usually is not as interesting and you run the chance of your photograph appearing stagnate and un interesting.

Vertical lines convey strength and stability.

If vertical lines converge upwards, as when you tilt your camera to get in the top of a building, they can give a soaring feeling, but in this case you can nearly always improve your image by slanting the camera slightly to build a strong diagonal which will increase the interest in your image.

Diagonal lines are great to create strong interest and a more dynamic image.

Where as horizontal and vertical lines tend to give a stable, static feel, diagonal lines are more dynamic, implying action and movement. Diagonal lines will also lead your viewers eyes to your main subject matter in a more interesting path.

Do not forget, you do not have to have an actual line between two points. This can also be accomplished through the use of contrasting light and colors. Lines can also be implied by the positioning of people or other objects.. If you find yourself with horizontal or vertical lines you do not want, simply change your camera angle to place them on a slant or eliminate them entirely.

Have your lines exit into corners.

If your lines are going to break the frame or come to an end, try to have them exit your image in a corner as opposed to the top, bottom or side of your composition.

It is always better if you do not cut your lines short. Give Your image room to move.

Anything that moves needs a space to continue its action, so do not cut your imaginary line too short. The same goes for people or animals, vehicles or even a fence line, try not to have them facing the short side or a lesser space of your composition. Give your subject some open space to continue their line of sight or direction they are traveling.

S-curves are great composition builders.

Straight lines can be dramatic and have good visual impact, but the alternating sweeps of S-curves are more relaxing and more attractive to the human eye. Think of a straight road compared to a winding one or a winding river compared to a straight length of river. The S-curve or even an arch is more effective when creating a soft or soothing image.
