Somethings gonna be flowing alright. Especially if this team doesn't start to produce some runs. How can we come into this series with any swagger with all the men left on base so far this year?

I aint here to bash this team. My last post was pretty harsh. So I decided to bash the Phillies and their players. Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and the rest of this World Championship team is for real again this year. It is getting difficult to gain trust and hope in this years Amazin Mets.
Now we are starting to hear grumbling that we shoulda got Manny Ramirez. There were so many other options that were available and all Omar did was fix the bullpen.
Hindsight is always 20/20. Lets just see if the Mets can at least put up a good fight against the Phillies, a team that has all the swagger after winning the World Series. At this point after all the jive talkin those Phillies players did, all that I have to say is:
Phuck The Phillies.

They may have some sparks that indicate they are a good team but they come and they go.
The outfield is a problem. I am not going to get on Daniel Murphy's case for his sloppy fielding, although I couldn't help but laugh when he fell on his ass as the ball went sailing over his head. Oh well. Now of course, everyone is saying that Gary Sheffield would have caught that ball. It goes back to last winter when everyone had such a hard on after they signed K-Rod. And then everyone got all excited when they signed Putz. I was wondering WTF they were going to do with the outfield.
OK, so now most folks have bailed out on Daniel Murphy, and they want to put Church in left field and start Sheffield everyday. That is about the only answer to the outfield problem because they didn't go out and get anybody worthwhile. We need an outfield that will scare the shit outta teams, and the only people that are scared right about now are Met fans.

As the season unfolds, this team isn't all that great. They can not afford to make mistakes like they have been because they will lose. Last nights game was a great example of the mediocrity of this club.

Omar didn't do anything this past winter. he was too busy getting ready to unveil his new ballpark.

Speaking of the new ballpark, I bought a sub from some deli that is in Citifield, a deli that my friend told me Omar Minaya used to go to when he was a kid. Well, that just gave me a warm feeling all over. The sub was an Italian hero that cost me $9.75, and the bottle of water was $3.75. The sandwich sucked, I don't care if Omar used to go there, but I guess that is the price for doing business in New York.

Citifield is a nice place, but it reminds me too much of the trendy new millennium shopping malls that are going up all over the place.
Perhaps Minaya is hoping that all of the fans in attendance would buy a $9.75 sub, he could afford another forty year old outfielders retirement plan. Either way, Citifield has an Italian hero, but we ain't got no outfield.

Me thinks it's gonna be a long season.

The Padres have gone 5-2 to start the year while our amazins are at .500. It's hard to tell right now about this Mets team. The offense seems to be sputtering, the defense looks great at times, the pitching is hot and cold, and unfortunately when the pitching is hot, the bats are dormant.
It's difficult to pinpoint things this early in the season.
They begin their first home stand of the season in dramatic fashion as they open Citifield with 3 games against the Padres, and then 3 games against the Brewers.

Buzzing around looking at the Met's site, they are talking about Citifield getting a nickname. The one nickname that is most popular right now is........umm... ya ready for this?..............The House Of David......................
David Who? If they are talking about David Wright I think that is a little bit crazy dont you?
Besides, the whole "House of David" sounds like a name of a band from the 90's, like "Fountains Of Wayne", doesn't it?...................

Some opening day festivities and Citifield Points Of Interest:

* Tom Seaver will throw out the first pitch to Mike Piazza.

* Dwight Gooden, Rusty Staub, John Franco, & Ralph Kiner will be among the stars coming out.

* If you are going to the game, they suggest that you take mass transportation. They always say that.

* Be sure to check out the Pepsi Porch way out in right field. It is supposed to be pretty nice, extending over fair territory.

* Check out the Taste Of New York food court where I am sure that you can enjoy a small snack for less than $50 ( We don't need no stinking food court!)

* The 2K Sports Fanfest area, located behind the main scoreboard looks pretty interesting. Fans will find a batting cage and a dunk tank. Not sure if their are any scheduled wet-met-T-shirt contests scheduled, but there is nothing like baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and dunk tanks!

It's gonna take a long time to get used to this new ballpark. I don't really care about all the new stuff at this park. I don't care about the Shake Shack and all the food court items, it sounds too much like a shopping mall than a ballpark. Just give me a good seat and a scorecard. I can do with out all the fluff!

This is getting very frustrating to watch. There is nothing worse than seeing the amazin's come back from a deficit, only to lose in the 9th inning. When all those Marlins came pouring out of the dugout, I flashed back to September. It doesn't matter which September, the past few have been traumatic to Mets fans. I get that sad, yet angry feeling in the stomach. Seeing the Marlins celebrate like that just brings it all back. Lets face it, the Florida Marlins have our number. Just like Pat Burrell is a Met killer, just like so many other players that have come and gone through the years. Yadier Freakin Molina is another name that comes to mind.
The Mets have 17 more games this season against this Marlin club. I don't know if you notice, but the Mets and Marlins are a rivalry just like the Cardinals and the Cubs were in the 80's. Just like the Braves were in the 90's, and if you look back at those years the only time the Mets came out on top was when they ran away with the division. They did come down to a one game playoff in 1999, but that was for the wildcard. The Mets have never come out on top in a division race.
Looking at the schedule, the final games against the Marlins are on September 25, 26, and 27th in Florida, then they go to Washington to play the Nats for three games and they close out the season at home against the Astros on October 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Not that I am superstitious, but I am glad they got smart and decided to close the season against another team this year.
I'm thinking those three games against the fish are going to be big.
It was a good game though. Here it is only the 4th game of a brand new season and I felt the tension. I yelled when Delgado struck out with men on base and scared some family members. They looked at me and couldn't comprehend how I could be so involved because they still think this is exhibition baseball. But they dont know. They don't need to. I'll bring them up to speed in few months. Right now I'm just loving this brand new Mets season. It's gonna be one heck of a ride this year!

Did I say that this team isn't fun or exciting to watch?

Did I say that?

Perhaps I am just being over zealous about the amazins' winning game 1 of the 2009 baseball season. Or maybe I'm still not used to a bullpen that can help preserve a one run lead.

Either way, the mets put one in the win column thanks to the two ribbies from Daniel Murphy. The kid had a great at-bat and clubbed a homer into the right field stands. If you were watching the game, you knew the ball was gone the second he made contact with it. What a nice poke from this kid. If Daniel Murphy can keep hitting like this, it will surely keep him in the lineup and give the amazins some much needed spark.

The Mets really seemed to be pumped up today. If you had a chance to catch the game, the atmosphere in the dugout was lively. They all looked psyched and ready to go. Besides Daniel Murphy, other Met players made their own contributions in the victory. Ryan Church looked as though he was having lots of fun out there, making a great catch and doubling up a runner at first base, while Carlos Delgado made a great stretch at the bag. Church pumped his arm triumphantly and was grinning ear to ear about the catch, the ball popped out and he caught it without missing a beat on the throw to Delgado.

Jose Reyes had his first stolen base of 2009 within seconds after the first pitch, it was a bit disappointing that they couldn't bring him home, but it was reminiscent of "86" when Dykstra would lead off and steal second, and then score on a base hit and before the other team could blink it was 1-0 Mets!

Johan pitched a great game and he provided moral support as well. It is always good to see your #1 starting pitcher all pumped up and yelling and cheering.

I know I was cynical in my post the other day. I get that way from time to time. I sure you do too being a Met fan, right?

But right now we have to feel good because this group of amazin's looked ready to win.

But there are still 161 games left.

Lets keep the faith!

That missing element certainly isn't Gary Sheffield. Nothing against Sheffield, but this assembly of players could use a little chemistry to help them get through the ups and downs of a long season. After the breakdown of the bullpen, the Mets didn't hit that well down the stretch last year. The offense dried up even when the bullpen wasn't blowing games.
There are too many question marks. The Dos Amigo's Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran really showed alot of hustle and spunk while playing in the WBC and we Met fans can only hope they bring that same hustle to the Mets. Omar Minaya really seems proud of the team that he assembled, but I gotta tell you that I just can't get excited about this club. I haven't been excited about this team since 1986. Perhaps I am being too hard on them. Maybe I'm still stuck in the 80's., although I got rid of my mullet back in the 90's.
The team doesn't excite me. Ryan Church is a good ballplayer yet he doesn't bring that excitement and anticipation that you get from a team that is destined to go deep into the playoffs. Remember the 85 and 86 Mets? Carter, Dykstra, Backman just to name a few. These guys were scrappy players that made it exciting to watch. You just had this feeling as though something big was going to happen. And it usually did. The closest any Met team has come was the teams in 99 and 2000. Ventura, Olerud, Piazza,Leiter. I miss those guys.Yet the anticipation wasn't as intense. They were missing something back then as well.

David Wright and Jose Reyes are fun to watch. We needed a marquee player like the Yankees got in Teixeira. K-Rod was a good acquisition but an everyday player would have been a nice added bonus. The team just doesn't seem to be all that fun to watch. But it is better to see new York Mets Baseball on a Weekend afternoon than flipping through the channels only to end up watching ESPN's marathon coverage of Poker. Gary Sheffield? It's gonna be a long summer but i am glad the boys of summer are back!

I actually started to wish that there was one more season left at Shea. Too many memories. I am having problems letting it go. The thing that really got me sniffing (not cocaine) was seeing George Theodore. Remember when he collided with Don Hahn and dislocated his hip?

I know this has probably been talked to death seven months ago, but I could see citifield looming off in the distance, almost smiling as the season played out and the destruction of good old Shea was just days away. I actually saw a video on youtube of the old stadium being knocked down, the score board being torn down. I really wanted to buy that score board. If I had the money I would have. I would keep it in my back yard or something. It would stay lit up all year long. Maybe figure out a way to set it up as a motion detector light to keep all those devious criminal Yankee fans out of my yard.

The 2009 season is just a few days away. Mets tickets are mighty pricey these days. Its hard to find cheap seats at citifield.
But I know that I will keep looking over at where Shea stadium was. This is going to take alot of getting used to. But perhaps the grieving will be met with joy if the amazin mets actually put a good season together and make the playoffs. Who knows. Stranger things have happened.
