I apologise for not been updating my blog for quite sometime now. The reason is that I've been very busy and been having a very tight offline schedules.

The initial symptoms of smallpox, 7 to 17 days after exposure, include the acute onset of fever, chills, headache, nausea, vomiting and severe muscle aches. This entire process takes three to four weeks, and the areas affected by the rash can be permanently scarred.

There are two types of smallpox: variola major and variola minor. Variola major is the more severe form and has a 30-50% fatality rate among those who are unvaccinated (3% in vaccinated persons). Variola minor has a 1-2% fatality rate in unvaccinated individuals. There are two rare and more serious forms of smallpox. In the most severe, known as purpura variolosa or hemorrhagic-type smallpox, the initial stage of the illness (before the rash appears) is accompanied by a dark, purplish, blotchy flushing of the skin. People who developed purpura variolosa usually have a severe loss of blood into the skin and internal organs (hemorrhage), and die before the typical smallpox rash appears. About 3% of the persons with variola major develop purpura variolosa.

Another rare and deadly form of smallpox is referred to as flat-type smallpox affects about 5% of the persons with variola major. Persons with this form of the disease have lesions that develop more slowly, never raised above the surface of the skin, and feel soft to the touch. If people with flat smallpox survive, they rarely experience severe scarring. Both purpura variolosa and flat smallpox are virtually never seen in persons infected with variola minor.

Smallpox is believed to have emerged in human populations about 10,000 BC. The earliest physical evidence of smallpox is likely the pustular rash on the mummified body of Pharaoh Ramses V of Egypt, who died in 1157 BC. The disease killed an estimated 400,000 Europeans per year during the closing years of the 18th century (including five reigning monarchs), and was responsible for a third of all blindness. Of all those infected, 20–60%—and over 80% of infected children—died from the disease.

Smallpox was responsible for an estimated 300–500 million deaths during the 20th century alone. In the early 1950s an estimated 50 million cases of smallpox occurred in the world each year. As recently as 1967, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 15 million people contracted the disease and that two million died in that year. After successful vaccination campaigns throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the WHO certified the eradication of smallpox in December 1979. Smallpox is one of only two infectious diseases to have been eradicated by humans, the other being Rinderpest, which was unofficially declared eradicated in October 2010. Smallpox Causes
Smallpox is caused by infection with variola virus, which belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus, the family Poxviridae and subfamily chordopoxvirinae. Variola is a large brick-shaped virus measuring approximately 302 to 350 nanometers by 244 to 270 nm, with a single linear double stranded DNA genome 186 kilobase pairs (kbp) in size and containing a hairpin loop at each end. The two classic varieties of smallpox are variola major and variola minor.

Four orthopoxviruses cause infection in humans: variola, vaccinia, cowpox, and monkeypox. Variola virus infects only humans in nature, although primates and other animals have been infected in a laboratory setting. Vaccinia, cowpox, and monkeypox viruses can infect both humans and other animals in nature.

The lifecycle of poxviruses is complicated by having multiple infectious forms, with differing mechanisms of cell entry. Poxviruses are unique among DNA viruses in that they replicate in the cytoplasm of the cell rather than in the nucleus. In order to replicate, poxviruses produce a variety of specialized proteins not produced by other DNA viruses, the most important of which is a viral-associated DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Both enveloped and unenveloped virions are infectious. The viral envelope is made of modified Golgi membranes containing viral-specific polypeptides, including hemagglutinin. Infection with either variola major or variola minor confers immunity against the other.

Transmission
Transmission occurs through inhalation of airborne variola virus, usually droplets expressed from the oral, nasal, or pharyngeal mucosa of an infected person. It is transmitted from one person to another primarily through prolonged face-to-face contact with an infected person, usually within a distance of 6 feet (1.8 m), but can also be spread through direct contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated objects (fomites) such as bedding or clothing. Rarely, smallpox has been spread by virus carried in the air in enclosed settings such as buildings, buses, and trains. The virus can cross the placenta, but the incidence of congenital smallpox is relatively low. Smallpox is not notably infectious in the prodromal period and viral shedding is usually delayed until the appearance of the rash, which is often accompanied by lesions in the mouth and pharynx. The virus can be transmitted throughout the course of the illness, but is most frequent during the first week of the rash, when most of the skin lesions are intact. Infectivity wanes in 7 to 10 days when scabs form over the lesions, but the infected person is contagious until the last smallpox scab falls off.

Smallpox is highly contagious, but generally spreads more slowly and less widely than some other viral diseases, perhaps because transmission requires close contact and occurs after the onset of the rash. The overall rate of infection is also affected by the short duration of the infectious stage. In temperate areas, the number of smallpox infections were highest during the winter and spring. In tropical areas, seasonal variation was less evident and the disease was present throughout the year. Age distribution of smallpox infections depends on acquired immunity. Vaccination immunity declines over time and is probably lost in all but the most recently vaccinated populations. Smallpox vaccination within three days of exposure will prevent or significantly lessen the severity of smallpox symptoms in the vast majority of people. Other than vaccination, treatment of smallpox is primarily supportive, such as wound care and infection control, fluid therapy, and possible ventilator assistance. Flat and hemorrhagic types of smallpox are treated with the same therapies used to treat shock, such as fluid resuscitation. Patients with semi-confluent and confluent types of smallpox may have therapeutic issues similar to patients with extensive skin burns.
No drug is currently approved for the treatment of smallpox. However, antiviral treatments have improved since the last large smallpox epidemics, and studies suggest that the antiviral drug cidofovir might be useful as a therapeutic agent. I'm a big fan of Firefox and love using it but after watching this video, I felt the temptation of trying out this new browser. I hope my RockMelt download won't melt my pc.

Maintain a balance diet. Avoid late night snacks.

Soon after their encounter, Santa warned Boudreau that O'Keefe wanted to get her to board a boat so that she could be secretly recorded. After a brief exchange with O'Keefe at the harbor, Boudreau canceled the meeting. Santa later sent a number of e-mails to CNN describing the intent of O'Keefe to set up an elaborate hoax involving sex toys and sexual conversation which was intended to embarrass both Boudreau and CNN.

The Toyota recall that affects 1.13 million vehicles also affects a General Motors vehicle built during a crossover deal.

Some 200,000 GM Pontiac Vibes sold in North America are also on the list. Toyota has already recalled Corolla sedans and Matrix hatchbacks in North America over fears the engines may stall while the vehicle is in operation and not restart.

GM’s Pontiac Vibe is similar to the Matrix and was built in a joint venture between the two auto makers. The model years Toyota is recalling are between 2005-2008, and marks just the latest string of safety recalls to plague the Japanese auto giant.

According to Toyota safety engineers, a faulty electronics module could fail, causing harsh shifting or engine start failures.

Wow! It seems like only yesterday that I watched Home Alone 1 and now the child actor and the movie star - Kevin McCallister or the real name, Macaulay Culkin turns 30. Time sure fly very fast and it's been 20 years. In the 1990's, Home Alone movie was a hit and another movie starring Macaulay Culkin that I enjoyed was Richie Rich. I truly appreciate his acts which to me, looks natural.

Veteran 48 Hours correspondent Harold Dow died on Saturday morning at the age of 62. An early AP report noted that it wasn't clear whether the five-time Emmy winner had been at home at the time of his sudden death.

But late last night, Dow's family released a statement linking his death to an asthma attack behind the wheel. The CBS News report reveals that, according to the Hackensack Police department, an inhaler was found on the floor of Dow's car. Also within that family statement was word that Dow had been suffering from severe asthmatic symptoms before the fatal moment, which prompted him to check into a New Jersey hospital last Monday for emergency treatment.

The numbers of egg recall had jump from from 228 million to 380 million eggs.

Salmonella outbreak sickening hundreds have led to a national egg recall and has grown to more than 380 millions eggs. Recall that affects food distributors and wholesalers across 17 states.

In California, there's 266 confirm cases of salmonella which in most cases is not fatal. All link to store bought eggs, dozens in Los Angeles alone.

The federal government says that eggs from Wright County Egg in Galt, Iowa have been linked to sicknesses in 3 states.

In L.A County, four groceries store chain either pull the tainted eggs off the shelves or warn consumers about egg brands like to the Iowa company.

Angello Bellomo L.A County Health Dept, "We found that the vast majority of retail outlets had pull the product from the shelves but we did find some, remaining on the shelf."

Health officials recommend throwing out eggs if you have any doubts about what's in your fridge.

Here are the egg recall list of brands that you should take note: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph's, Boomsma's, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms, and Kemps.

Here's some egg recall numbers that you should also take note to run a check on dates and codes stamped on the carton. The plant numbers affected are P-1026, P-1413, and P-1946. The dates (recorded in the "Julian format") range from 136 to 225, according to a statement by the Egg Safety Center. Watson, who was tied with Francisco Molinari, Matt Kuchar, Ernie Els and Nick Watney at 4-under in the fog-shortened first round at Whistling Straits, was nearing the end of his press conference after playing when asked why ‘d been so emotional after winning a playoff at the Travelers in Cromwell, Conn. When she began to speak, tears rolling.

“My dad has cancer,” he said. “We’ve been struggling all year. I did not tell many people because it’s really nobody cares, you know I’m not here to get sympathy, I’m here to play golf.”

But that is where your story is over. This was where she and her tears began.

“Christmas Eve, my wife went to the hospital when I was in Pensacola to see my dad,” he said. “She had a headache and she is a professional athlete (basketball player), who had surgery on his knees, shoulders, everywhere possible – so when she wants to go to the hospital, I know something not right. ”

Initially, it was found to dehydration, but the medical examiner thought he saw a tumor on his pituitary gland. Watson’s father told him to go home and care for his wife because “I lived my life.”

He tried several times to control his emotions before saying, “continued for two months and have done some more tests and – this man is hard – we went to Duke University Hospital and the doctors said it’s not a tumor.”

As he returned to throat, Watson said: “Man, I do not like the guys over. Before I had fun, but now I’m not.”

In a room full of reporters laughed, Watson went on, the magnitude of the reduction of golf with his words.

“So the first doctor misdiagnosed, but we knew that at the time, so scared,” recalled Watson. “Why do you want to hit a golf ball around? That’s really the excitement to come. Let us hope that not everyone thinks I’m a fag. I hit the ball very far.”

Someone asked if the heel those emotions, what many people in golf have been the Achilles, had to be removed for him to win. Watson thought for a moment before speaking.

“I know the media has come to write stories, but it’s just golf,” he said. “If you make putts, you can win golf tournaments. That’s what comes down a. No matter if you have emotions.
