Alice comes from Texas, but lives in Portugal. Sometimes her English is perfect, and sometimes it isn't. She won a million dollars in a lottery and every day she paints her fingernails red. She might be someone you know, or perhaps you have never heard of her. So does she really exist?

Singaporean choreographer Joavien Ng and Spanish choreographer Paloma Calle are currently undertaking a one-month residency at Rimbun Dahan supported by the Asia-Europe Foundation. During their residency, Joavien and Paloma are collaborating to create a new performance work entitled “The Diary of Alice”, intertwining the concepts of fiction and identity.

Rimbun Dahan, with support from the Asia-Europe Foundation are proud to present a performance laboratory and public lecture by Joavien Ng and Paloma Calle, at The Annexe Gallery, as part of their residency programme.

Sun 14 Mar, 12pm to 3pm
Come join a 3-hour performance laboratory with Joavien Ng and Paloma Calle, exploring creative processes associated with the body, objects, space, image and sound. Artists in all genres are invited to participate, as Paloma and Joavien facilitate a development process involving their new work “The Diary of Alice”. Each participant should bring a digital camera (a mobile phone with camera is suitable), and an object with special meaning to the participant, either positive or negative. Participants are requested to wear loose comfortable clothes, as some movement will be involved.

Mon 15 Mar, 8pm to 10pm
Joavien Ng and Paloma Calle will give a lecture presentation about their previous works, followed by a Q&A discussion.

Held for the third consecutive time, this is one of the largest sporting events in East Malaysia attracting runners from all over Malaysia and Asian countries. The marathon route is along the beautiful coastal roads of Kota Kinabalu.

Eugenio Barba and Julia Varley will be visiting Malaysia for the first time. Mr. Barba will deliver a lecture after a work demonstration by Ms. Varley.

The topic of Julia Varley's work demonstration is THE DEAD BROTHER which is on how performances are made at Odin Teatret. It describes the stages of their work beginning from a poetic text to its transformation into a 'poem in space' - the perfromance. It presents the different stages of the process in which text, actor and director interact. It shows the first step where the actor begins to create her own stage presence to the last step where the text, through the form and precision of the actions, acquires rhythms and density of meaning.

Books published by ODIN and authored by Eugenio Barba will be on sale on the event day at the foyer leading to Pentas 1.

Queer As Films is a monthly film screening at The Annexe Gallery presented by PT Foundation and Seksualiti Merdeka with aims to empower the local GLBT community and provide a safe space to discuss their issues. This month we present a double-bill of films open to members of the public, with hopes of promoting understanding and building allies. Prayers For Bobby is the second film in this double-bill.

A powerfully moving made-for-TV film telling the true story of Mary Griffith, a conservative Christian mom who has to come to terms with her gay son's suicide and her role in it. Unable to accept her son's homosexuality, Mary forces him to go to therapies and prayer group meetings. Feeling conflicted, depressed and unaccepted, Bobby eventually ran away from home and one night, jumped off a highway into oncoming traffic. Sigourney Weaver gives a tear-jerker (and Golden Globe nominated) performance as Mary Griffith, who is now a well-known gay-rights activist.

After the movie, we will share about how family members can learn to accept their children and siblings for who they are. Bring your parents and brothers and sisters along. If you have relatives who are queer, this film is for you too.

MARY GRIFFITH: To all the Bobbys and Janes out there, I say these words to you as I would my own precious children. Please don't give up hope on life, or yourselves. You're very special to me, and I'm working very hard to make this life a better and safer place for you to live in. Promise me you'll keep trying. Bobby gave up on love, I hope you won't. Queer As Films is a monthly film screening at The Annexe Gallery presented by PT Foundation and Seksualiti Merdeka with aims to empower the local GLBT community and provide a safe space to discuss their issues. This month we present a double-bill of films open to members of the public, with hopes of promoting understanding and building allies. The Naked Civil Servant is the first film in this double-bill.

This charmingly funny BBC classic is based on the autobiography of British queer icon Quentin Crisp, one of the first openly effeminate homosexuals of England. Walking the streets with make-up and a flamboyant fashion sense during the less tolerant pre-WWII England, he survived with nothing more than mascara, sharp wit and sheer force of personality. His struggle to be true to himself is poignantly captured by the amazing performance of John Hurt (V For Vendetta, The Elephant Man) in a career-defining and award-winning role. (John Hurt reprises this role 34 years later for the sequel "An Englishman In New York", a title taken from the Sting song about Quentin Crisp.)

Joining us for a post-movie discussion is film critic BENJAMIN MCKAY, who met Quentin once, and actor/drag artist EDWIN SUMUN, our very own Quentin. They will talk about queerness, being out and the need for queer icons.

Note: The second part of this month's Queer As Films double-bill is Prayers For Bobby, starring Sigourney Weaver, at 6pm.

‘West Side Story The Musical’ has been described as ‘a masterpiece of musical theatre’ and is said to have changed the face of musical theatre forever when it made its debut on Broadway back in 1957. For the first time ever, this legendary musical is now being staged right here on Malaysian soil, and is expected to be one of the year’s biggest and hottest events, attracting musical and theatre lovers from around the region.

West Side Story – The Original Broadway Musical is brought in by Yvents!, with the support of the Tourism Ministry as well as the Information, Communication and Culture Ministry, in partnership with HSBC Bank.

This music event will host between 12 bands and/or artist from different background and genre performing a 20 minutes sets each.

Featuring well known personalities and bands such as Maya Karin, Radhi O, Republic of Brickfields, Aizat and introducing the great new bands from 2crank such as Johnny Comes Lately, Zull King, Cynosure, An Honest Mistake, Car Crash Hearts and many more.

Entry is free for this event. Donations can be made at various collection points at the venue, and all proceeds will be channeled through UNICEF and Mercy Malaysia, the beneficiaries for this fund raising efforts.
