You can sell your brand through scent marketing.

How does your brand smell?

For hotels, this is perhaps the toughest question any marketer or consumer can ask regarding brand identity, simply because many of our answers regarding a brand were focused on visual information. People can describe a brand through its color, font or symbol – a brand is what we see.

Establishing a brand in the hospitality industry, particularly the hotel industry, is not simple. It sells experiences. As such, for the brand to create the impact it needs, it would require more than visual elements.

This is where the sense of smell becomes a plus factor.

It makes sense. Research indicates that the olfactory nerve and memory are strongly linked to one another. The nerve is near the limbic system and amygdala, both responsible for emotions and memories, prompting nostalgic personal associations to events or objects from previous experiences. The nose has the ability to differentiate around 350,000 unique scents, affecting 75 percent of a man's daily emotions. Research further proposes that visual information can be better stored if complemented with smell.

Scent Marketing

This is the basic idea of “scent marketing" by WAVScents. For brands to linger in a consumer's brain, a stealth mechanism is used through the use of scents inside the service establishment where consumers can immediately associate one's brand with a smell. WAVScents, a division of WAV Atmospheric Branding whose core business is designing instore music and brand messages for establishments, is the only Filipino provider of signature scents for hospitality, leisure, and retail spaces.

Some of the clients of WAVScents are Resorts World Manila, Marriott Hotel Manila and Marriott Hotel Cebu, Discovery Suites, The Bellevue Manila, The Bayleaf in Intramuros, The Picasso Boutique Serviced Residences, and Power Mac at Greenbelt 3, among others.

WAVScents’ Operations Manager, Alan Jan P. Giganan, described how each client attempted to suit their market's demographics and preferences with the appropriate fragrance, ultimately smelling their way into greater brand equity.

The Bayleaf Hotel, a 57-room boutique hotel in Intramuros, wanted a powdery, clean and fresh scent. Its General Manager, Ed Vitug, tested the fragrance provided by WAVScents during the grand opening to see how the guests would initially react. Mr. Vitug later decided to stick with the chosen smell after TV host and Leyte representative Lucy Torres-Gomez complimented The Bayleaf because of its lobby fragrance.

Marriott Hotel Manila and Marriott Hotel Cebu adopted a sweet musky fragrance. The Manila property’s objective was to eliminate the odor of smoke in three (3) areas inside the hotel while leaving a scent that would make a lasting memory to its guests. The Cebu property followed, as a believer of Ambient Scenting, to promote a Signature Fragrance that Marriott Hotels in the Philippines can have ownership of.

WAVScents uses oil-based products instead of the harmful alcohol-based ones. The scent is diffused with the use of dry vapour or cold fusion and not heat or aerosol. This is to prevent the toxic mutation of chemical properties caused by heat or chemicals.

Cost vs. Investment

An appropriate indoor fragrance influences the way people will behave. For instance, Mr. Giganan related that in the United States, one employer would diffuse the scent of lavender in the workplace to relax employees.

The same is true for all service establishments from spa to hotels, to retail stores, malls, and even hospitals. Unfortunately, Mr. Giganan said, that Philippine-based businesses mostly see fragrance as a cost rather than an investment.

But the mere fact that many hotels are including scent marketing into their annual budget reveals the reality that in an industry that's continuously growing, distinguishing one's brand from competitors means investment in small essentials with big, long term, and nostalgic-effects.

Surely, the power of fragrance can be so strong that even if a repeat client were to search the whole city for the brand, eyes-closed, all it would take is for them to follow their nose.

Textures will be exaggerated and lightweight, like silk, or breathable knits. Flowing maxi skirts will be everywhere, as these airy skirts make one feel more connected with the familiar weather patterns that spring and summer bring.

These lightweight fabrics and bohemian style pieces will bring people closer to thick, chunky, and perhaps vintage looking jewelry. Don't expect to see a lot of super bright colors until the super-hot moments of June and late July, when pastel and jewel toned items turn into electric colors coming out of the woodworks. Though not as harsh as last summer’s electric colors, you would see them played together with softer objects and neutral tones. All of this carries well into the middle of September.

Around the beginning of the cooler weather, fashion will turn to colors like burnt orange, cool and dark blues, browns, and deep greens. This is the transition into the more conservative styles that will come up for the winter. Mod and Victorian style outwear will make a reappearance, so as to bring back ideas of tradition and usher forward into a colder winter of deep colors and thick, durable textures. These will be contrasting to the lighter weight textures used often in the previous winter. Expect a lot of corduroy and wool.

2012 is all about new starts in the beginning, and ends in a firm rebuilding of tradition, unlike 2011, which was quite the opposite. Perhaps we will circle around again next year, perhaps we won’t. Who really knows anyway? Fashion is one of the most fickle ideas in our modern world and sometimes transcends even what a psychic can predict!

Either way, it would be useful explore options for bringing the best out of your new assets. Someone once said that eyes are the highlight of one’s face, so wouldn’t it make sense to mold your wardrobe around your new color to make them pop? It is good to know that contrast is key, if you have an exciting new color, why wash it out by wearing the same shade in the majority of your clothing? Sunglasses. Every woman owns one but not every woman knows how to choose the perfect pair. If you're only considering two factors like price and style, you're not doing it right. So here are some tips to help you pick your pair of sunnies when you go shopping.

Color of lenses. You have to consider the color of the lenses before buying. Why? Because tints affect how well you detect contrast and differentiate colors. Some lenses enhance contrast and vice versa. If you're trying a pair and you're having a hard time differentiating colors in your surroundings, try another. You might have difficulty doing your usual activities while wearing it (e.g. while driving, looking at the traffic lights).

Eye protection. Aside from fashion statement, your sunglasses should be protecting you from UV rays. Excessive exposure to UV radiation may lead to eye problems such as cataracts, burns, and cancer. Look for pairs that block 99% of UVB rays and at least 95% of UVA rays.

We've finally took a glimpse of Kate Middleton's wedding dress! There had been much speculation about the dress since the royal couple announced their engagement, and now we can all savor the gorgeous details.

Kate Middleton's wedding dress is Sarah Burton for Alexander Mcqueen. Her look is very much like Grace Kelly. She wears a "halo" tiara which was made by Cartier in 1936. The vintage tiara was given by King George VI to the Queen Mother who later gave it to the Queen as a gift on her 18th birthday. Earrings are by Robinson Pelham, and shoes by Mcqueen.

Whether you're a fashionista or not, dressing according to your body shape is basically the #1 rule a woman should follow before trends and designer clothes. First, stand in front of a full-length mirror, assess your body shape, and choose among Apple, Pear, Strawberry, Hourglass, and Rectangle body shapes. Find clothes for all occasions at Very.co.uk.

Apple Body Shape

Torso and upper body wider than your hips -- with little or no waist definition. You might have weight surrounding your waist.
You MAY have gorgeous legs and/or boobs.
Avoid adding volume around your middle - avoid short, boxy jackets and pleated or tiered skirts.
Wear A-line and circle skirts.
Use longer length tops and low/plunging necklines, and single-breasted coats and jackets.

Hourglass Body Shape

Make your waist a focal point - use belts by wearing it around the thinnest part of your waist.
