Movie Review: Papa Buka

On December 8th, 2025, I had the privilege of watching the screening of Papa Buka at the Cine Grand in Fremont, an experience made even more special that our friend Prakash Bare co-produced the film and delivered a compelling performance as Anand Kunjiraman. This new film—Papua New Guinea’s official Oscar nomination is a heartfelt and visually captivating film that immerses the audience in the rugged beauty of New Guinea and the rich lives of its native tribes. The cinematography exquisitely showcases the land’s untouched landscapes, while the outstanding music elevates every scene with emotional depth. Each character leaves a strong and lasting impact. What moved me most was the sincere and powerful presence of Papa Buka, who steps into his first acting role with remarkable honesty. His performance feels natural, deeply human, and emotionally resonant—he becomes the soul of the story.

The narrative, set in 2010, offers an intimate glimpse into the region’s culture and its people. At the same time, it stirs broader reflections tied to the World War II struggles. Why do wars happen ? Who truly benefits from the war? Perhaps no one.

Papa Buka transcends the boundaries of a traditional film—it's an emotional journey into a world rarely seen on screen, one that stays with you long after the credits roll.

In Memory of an Onion Uttapam — And the Purab Restaurant That Defined My Pune Days

Growing up in NDA Khadakwasla, Pune, the world around Deccan Gymkhana felt like an extended neighborhood. The nearby stores, the familiar restaurants, the thelas, and even the old movie theater were all part of a daily rhythm—especially for those of us who hopped on and off the PMT buses that stopped at the Gymkhana bus stand.

On practical-lab days, my friends and I would leave home before sunrise, catching the early 7:00–7:30 a.m. bus from NDA to Ferguson College. By the time we returned around 5:30 or 6:00 p.m., we were exhausted and running on the remnants of the single lunchbox we carried with us. Those were the moments when the real dilemma struck:

Should we run to catch the 6 p.m. bus home… or let it go and give in to the temptation of Purab Restaurant?

More often than not, Purab tugged harder at our tired hearts (and empty stomachs). Its legendary onion uttapam—thin, large, generously loaded with onions and green peas, topped with just the right amount of green chilies—was unmatched. So good, in fact, that I never bothered looking at anything else on their menu. Paired with their chikoo milkshake, it was pure comfort, a small luxury for tired students who didn’t mind missing a bus for it.

After I left Pune, I don’t think I ever truly tried uttapam again. Nothing ever came close to Purab’s version. Maybe I didn’t want to risk breaking the memory.

But today, at Mylapore, I decided to be brave. I was nervous—What if it disappoints? What if it ruins my favorite memory?

When two small uttapams arrived with coconut chutney, tomato chutney, and sambar, I could almost feel my subconscious apologizing to Purab for daring to compare. I took the first bite. It was good—really good—but it wasn’t that uttapam. It couldn’t be.

Some flavors belong not just to a kitchen, but to a time, a place, and a version of ourselves long gone.

I don’t know if Purab Restaurant still stands, but I hope it does. I hope it’s still serving that iconic onion uttapam to students rushing between buses and practicals, creating new memories just like it did for us.

A Birthday of Gratitude: Giving Back at Salinas Strawberry Farm

November 7th was my birthday — and like a child still at heart, I was eagerly waiting to celebrate with my family, which I did with joy and laughter. As the evening came to a close around 11 p.m., my thoughts shifted from cake and candles to something deeper — our next morning’s visit to Salinas Strawberry Farm to donate food and clothes to the hardworking farmers who bring fresh produce to our tables.

The plan was to drive early to San Jose, meet my friends, and head together to Salinas. We’ve been volunteering with Hands that Care, a local organization led by Hector — a kind, humble soul whose story itself is an inspiration. Having endured hardship in his childhood, Hector once prayed, “If I survive this, I will return to serve my community.” He kept that promise. Today, despite managing his own cleaning business and facing financial challenges, he continues to give — consistently and quietly. Listening to him speak about his daughters pursuing master’s degrees in medical fields filled me with hope. Stories like his remind us how privileged many of us truly are.

This initiative was organized through Vanitha Charity Organization, where a few of us friends collected food cans, rice, winter clothes, socks, and other essentials — simple items that can mean so much. I missed the trip last year, so this time, I was eager to be there in person.

I reached my friend Priya’s home around 7:15 a.m. in San Jose. Since the farmers wouldn’t be arriving until later, Hector suggested we start around 9:30 a.m. In the meantime, Priya made us a warm, delicious breakfast and tea. There’s something special about people like her — kind, grounded, and genuine. I instantly felt a connection. Thank you, Priya, for your hospitality, and to Vanitha’s President Manju Abraham and Chairperson Geeta George, whose leadership continues to inspire me to stay involved.

The 60-mile drive from San Jose to Salinas was long but filled with laughter and conversation. I got to know Dr. Manju from Minneapolis and Priya’s husband Sree, who drove us and helped carry heavy boxes of food and clothes. His quiet strength and helpful nature made our trip smooth and cheerful.

We met Hector at La Patisserie Bakery — and even though we had already eaten, the aroma of pastries was hard to resist. When Hector arrived, his smile said it all — full of gratitude and warmth. He had also coordinated with another group bringing donations that day.

Following him to the Foothill Estate Strawberry Farm, we began setting up tables, sorting cans of soups, beans, noodles, rice, tomato sauce, and other staples. As the farmers came during their breaks, we handed out supplies. What struck me most was their dignity. No one grabbed or rushed. They took only what they needed, often saying “Gracias” and encouraging us to give to others.

There was such quiet grace in their actions — humility in the face of hardship, patience amid long days under the sun. One woman held a donated winter jacket close to her chest, as if embracing warmth itself. In that moment, I realized: the true worth of that jacket wasn’t when I owned it, but when she did.

The day was hot, and I was grateful to Priya for packing hats for us. But looking around, I thought of the farmers — toiling in that same heat, day after day. It was humbling. As we talked more with Hector, we learned about the farmers’ living conditions — some relying on tents as makeshift homes through the winter. We made notes on what they needed most so that we can bring more useful items next time.

Life has a way of teaching us quietly. That day, I learned more about gratitude, patience, and compassion than any book could teach. On the drive back, my heart was full and heavy all at once.

We stopped for lunch, and by the time we reached back, Priya invited us for evening tea. We ended the day with laughter and reflection — a beautiful contrast to the silence of the fields earlier that morning.

As I write this, I can still see the faces of the farmers — their tired smiles, their eyes filled with both fatigue and resilience. These moments are etched in my heart.

Once in a while, we must pause and look around us — beyond our routines, beyond our comfort zones — to truly see the people who make our lives possible. Many around us are struggling: farmers, cleaners, those affected by layoffs, or anyone trying to make ends meet with quiet dignity.

This planet belongs to all of us, and basic human needs should never be a privilege. The disparity we see is not just economic — it’s a reminder of our shared responsibility.

The end of October turned out to be a true retreat — not just for the mind, but for the soul. I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a literature festival organized by the Literary Association of North America (LANA) in Dallas, Texas.

From the moment I arrived, I felt an instant sense of belonging. Strangers would walk up, introduce themselves, and ask where I was from — and within minutes, conversations flowed like we’d known each other for years. The warmth and hospitality made it feel like home away from home.

There’s something magical about being surrounded by people who share your passion for words. Among like-minded souls, there’s no need for masks or pretensions. You simply show up as you are — and you’re accepted, appreciated, and celebrated for it.

It wasn’t just a festival; it was an experience — one that nourished creativity, connection, and community. I came back from Dallas feeling inspired, grateful, and ready to write more.

Chicago’s literary crowd gathered for a full day of words, music, and movement as the Art Literature Fest (ALF) 3.0, presented by the American Literature Association (ALA), unfolded into a celebration of creativity.

After the 9:30 a.m. inauguration, the festival jumped straight into stimulating literature sessions.

S. Hareesh opened with a talk in Malayalam that explored the soul of storytelling.

Dr. Manu S. Pillai followed, weaving English and Malayalam to examine how memory shapes our understanding of history.

M. Swaraj closed the morning with an engaging look at the History of the Indian Constitution in Malayalam.

The midday lunch break wasn’t just about food—it was a lively mix of book signings, networking, and casual conversations, where visiting and local authors mingled with readers. A special book release by Chicago and other State based writers highlighted the city’s own literary heartbeat, while young winners of ALA’s writing competitions were celebrated for their fresh voices and bright ideas. A short “Book on Stage” segment rounded out the literature track.

Post-lunch, S. Hareesh and M. Swaraj sat down for an intimate fireside chat. Then Dr. Sreevalsan J. Menon and Dr. Rachitha Ravi captivated the audience with Music & Mudras, a seamless dialogue of melody and movement.

The evening shifted into pure performance. Dr. Rachitha Ravi returned with a spellbinding dance on Karn Mrityunjaya (“The Death Conqueror”) by Shivaji Sawant book, followed by AMMA – Poetry in Motion, each piece marrying tradition with contemporary flair. Finally, Dr. Sreevalsan J. Menon and team delivered a soul-stirring live concert, sending everyone home humming.

The ALA program has a special space in my heart for their exclusive style of planning and curating the festival agenda. Everything was organized so smoothly, without disruption or confusion, that participants could simply immerse themselves in the experience. Kudos to the volunteers, who worked wholeheartedly behind the scenes—not seeking the spotlight but ensuring the event’s success. They function like a family, celebrating the collective achievement of the festival rather than individual recognition, and that spirit of humility is what makes ALA truly remarkable.

What made ALF 3.0 truly memorable was its spirit of connection. Acclaimed authors and performers proved warm and approachable, while festivalgoers formed new friendships across art, literature, and music—a vibrant bouquet of creative minds.

From insightful panels to transcendent performances, ALF 3.0 was not just a festival but an experience—a shining example of how stories, rhythm, and community can light up a Chicago weekend.

Finding Joy in Rhythm, Carrying Amma in Spirit

This year began on a difficult note with the loss of our Amma, my mother-in-law, in October. Each of us grieved in our own way, and her absence created a deep void. She had always been present in our lives—either visiting us in person or connecting with us over video calls—and that constant presence is what we miss the most.

In time, I slowly started focusing on healing. Playing the Chenda, making new friends who now feel like family, and being part of our group Bay Melam brought me strength. As my Arangettam approached, our daily in-person Chenda practice camp with our beloved Guru, Mela Kalaratnam Kalamandalam Shivdas Aashaan, began in full swing. His direct, honest feedback kept us sharp and attentive to the finer details—the posture of the hands, the strength of each beat, and most importantly, the joy of dancing with the rhythm as we play.

I never set out with the dream of performing an Arangettam; my only goal was to learn. But this journey gave me the confidence to step onto a stage and perform at events. With Bay Melam (our band name), I had the honor of performing in Manteca for the Onam celebration and later in Fremont at the Vellankanni festival. Through it all, my family’s support has been unwavering. It’s not just me who finds joy in playing the Chenda—my family feels happiness in watching me play with such passion.

I carry immense gratitude for the universe aligning everything to make this possible. If Amma were still with us, she would have proudly shared this with the entire world. I miss her deeply—words will never be enough to capture that feeling.

Today, as a family, we chose to celebrate Onam together—dressing up, sitting down for Sadya, and simply enjoying each other’s company. After such an eventful month, this quiet day of food, laughter, and togetherness feels truly blissful. Happy Onam to all !!!

Pattunool Puzhu – A Journey Through Threads of Life

Malayalam, as a language, holds one of the richest treasures of literature in India. Its stories, deeply rooted in people, places, and emotions, have a way of immersing you completely into their world. Listening to the audiobook Pattunool Puzhu was my way of reconnecting with this richness—an experience both powerful and lingering.

The title Pattunool Puzhu translates to silkworm. Just as the silkworm spins delicate yet strong threads, the story too weaves together fragile emotions, relationships, and unspoken desires into a fabric that feels intensely real. Each character is a thread, sometimes shining with hope, sometimes fraying with pain, yet essential to the whole.

The novel by S. Hareesh stands out not just for its theme but for his remarkable style of storytelling. The way he introduces each character—Annie, her son Samson, Vijayan, and others—felt almost cinematic. Their lives, struggles, and connections unfolded gradually, as though I were watching them move around me. The narration of the audiobook added even more depth, making me visualize every place and person as if I were a part of their world.

What stayed with me the most was the emotional weight of the story. Annie and her son Samson’s lives, and even the delicate relationship between Annie and Vijayan, brought moments of quiet sadness. It is not a tale that offers easy answers or a neatly tied happy ending, but one that reflects life in all its complexity.

Days after finishing the audiobook, I found myself thinking about each of the characters—their choices, their silences, their vulnerabilities. That is the power of Hareesh’s writing: he lingers in your thoughts, making you revisit the story again and again in your mind.

It took me a while to sit down and write this review because the story was still living with me, refusing to let go. Pattunool Puzhu is not just a book—it is an experience that wraps around you, like the threads of the silkworm, fragile yet enduring.

I had the privilege of attending Garje Marathi Global’s 9th Anniversary and the launch of the Garje Marathi Global Innovation Academy at Stanford University yesterday —an event filled with purpose, energy, and a shared vision to empower innovation from the grassroots to the global stage.

Inspired by the words of P.L. Deshpande:
"Villages feed cities… Solid villages give rise to solid cities—and ultimately a solid nation."
This philosophy echoed through the sessions, reminding us of the power of rural innovation and inclusive growth.

Alongside keynote talks, there was a live Hackathon—engaging students and professionals in real-time innovation. It was exciting to see how a side event like this could very well spark the next startup idea. The audience included changemakers not just from the Bay Area but also from Chicago, Seattle, New Jersey, India, and China—highlighting GMG’s global impact.
A standout moment was the live demo of Amazon’s Kero AI tool. It was a clear, engaging way to show how AI is not just about automation but about empowerment—how humans can guide and control its outcomes. This made it especially valuable for the students in attendance, showing them how accessible and practical technology can be.

The day was also well-orchestrated—from welcome tea and snacks to a delicious lunch—all thanks to a committed group of volunteers who made the experience seamless and warm.
We heard from inspiring leaders like Anand Ganu, Anurag Mairal, PhD (He/His), Rupali Deshpande, and Sanjay Bhandari —whose journey from patents to IPOs reflects the exact kind of excellence GMG seeks to foster. Their experiences reminded me of the parallels with Go-To-Market strategies, from inception to delivery and measurement.

A heartfelt thank you to my friend Keerti Kulkarni for checking in—your nudge led to a day well spent: learning, connecting, and being part of something meaningful. Ronth is a gripping Malayalam crime thriller that truly left me stunned. What a story, what a suspenseful ride! Shahi Kabir has once again proven his strength in storytelling and direction—every scene was taut with tension, emotion, and realism.

Roshan Matthew and Dileesh Pothan delivered phenomenal performances. Their acting felt so effortless and natural that they didn’t just play their characters—they became them. The subtlety, intensity, and emotional depth they brought to their roles was truly commendable.

While the film keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout, the ending leaves you with a sense of sorrow and reflection. It’s heartbreaking. It reminds us how rarely we think about the personal lives and silent struggles of police officers. A few corrupt ones may taint the name of the force, but the pain and sacrifices of the honest ones—and their families—often go unseen and unacknowledged.

Ronth is not just a crime thriller. It’s a mirror to society, and a powerful commentary on justice, morality, and the human cost behind the uniform.

Book Review: Hangwoman – A Journey Through Calcutta’s Streets and Shadows

There are books that entertain you, some that educate you, and then there are those rare ones that unsettle you—profoundly, poetically. Hangwoman (originally written in Malayalam as Aarachaar) by K.R. Meera is one such hauntingly powerful novel. Reena suggested this book to me, and I’m so glad she did—it’s a literary experience I won’t forget. I actually experienced the story through the gripping audiobook narration by Benaifer Mirza.

Set primarily in Kolkata (Calcutta), the story follows Chetna Grddha Mullick, the first woman executioner in India, born into a lineage of hangmen. But Hangwoman is not just about death—it’s about life, patriarchy, journalism, love, politics, and identity. Meera’s writing, masterfully translated from Malayalam to English by J. Devika, is lyrical, intense, and immersive. It speaks volumes of the original's power that its essence and layered complexity could travel across languages and still hit hard.

What struck me the most was the vivid narration. Meera has a way of weaving words that transport you. As I read, I could walk through the crowded streets of Kolkata. I could smell the river at the ghats, hear the bells and chaos, taste the sweet graininess of sondesh. The city wasn’t just a backdrop—it was a living, breathing character in the story. I could see it, feel it, and be a part of it. That is the beauty of Meera’s storytelling.

Chetna’s voice—raw, conflicted, and sharp—is unforgettable. The novel explores generational trauma, the complexity of womanhood, and the moral contradictions of justice and media sensationalism. The father-daughter dynamic is particularly gripping, sometimes suffocating, yet heartbreakingly real.

K.R. Meera, a celebrated journalist and author from Kerala, is known for her powerful portrayals of women and for challenging societal norms. Aarachaar, when published in Malayalam, was met with critical acclaim and went on to win multiple awards including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award. The English translation has made this monumental work accessible to a global audience—and I can see why it stirred so many conversations.

It’s Monday, and I’m on summer shutdown at work this week — a rare day with nothing on my calendar. “Since you’re free, why don’t you come to my office?” Rhea suggested. And just like that, I had my plans for today.

As I walked into her workplace, memories flooded back — the times I’d take all three of my little ones, Rahi, Rhea, and our beloved cocker spaniel Reyna, to the VMware campus for visits. How the roles have shifted.

Today, it was my daughter showing me around — giving me a tour of the Nvidia campus, the cafeteria, and sharing lunch together. A quiet moment of pride.

Before I left, I added my signature doodle on the whiteboard by her desk — a little tradition that continues.

It warmed my heart to see this picture of my English teacher, Maggie Santram ma'am, who turned 95 on May 14th! So many wonderful memories flooded back. She taught us to truly speak English – the nuances of pronunciation and grammar, and her storytelling was simply captivating. She had this way of making us believe she was straight from England, and we all wholeheartedly embraced it.

Mrs. Santram was a remarkable teacher. Though she held us to high standards, her respectful way of communicating naturally fostered an environment of mutual respect. And her style! She was undoubtedly the most stylish teacher throughout my elementary and high school years. While there were younger, fashionable teachers later, Mrs. Santram possessed a unique elegance.

I cherish every moment spent in her classroom. I still vividly recall her having me read aloud, praising my pronunciation while explaining the meaning of words to the others. Our generation shares a special bond with our teachers; a mix of deep respect, love, and perhaps a touch of nostalgia that can bring a tear to the eye. This past weekend, the Literature Association of North America (LANA) hosted a two-day literary camp in Fremont, California, and to say it was an enriching experience would be an understatement. From thought-provoking discussions to joyful camaraderie, the event brought together writers, poets, readers, and dreamers under one creative umbrella.

The atmosphere buzzed with stories, laughter, and inspiration as attendees engaged in sessions that covered a wide range of literary themes. Whether it was fiction or memoir, poetry or publishing advice, every speaker brought a unique voice to the table—each one adding another brushstroke to this vibrant tapestry of words.

The camp kicked off on Friday evening with a warm "Meet and Greet," setting the stage for the engaging inaugural function. Anchored by the dynamic duo of Tom Antony and Smitha Kottarath, the evening unfolded with a welcoming address by John Kodiyan, followed by a nostalgic look at LANA's history through a captivating video. Sankar Mana's presidential address set a thoughtful tone for the days ahead, culminating in the inauguration by the esteemed Madassery Neelakantan. The evening was further graced by insightful felicitations from Athmaraman and Thampy Antony, leading into a thought-provoking speech by Vinod Narayan on the "Struggling World of Reading" (വഴിമുട്ടുന്ന വായനാലോകം). He spoke about the beauty of understanding a poet’s or writer’s method and meaning, emphasizing that every reader has the opportunity to assimilate the essence of a work by engaging deeply with its rhythm, context, and subtext. His insights encouraged the audience to go beyond the surface, to pause, reflect, and truly experience literature as a dialogue between the creator and the reader. It was a powerful conclusion to a weekend that celebrated the written word in all its richness.

The ceremony continued with an engaging and thought-provoking speech by Umesh P. Narendran on the intricacies of "Translating Poetry" (കവിതകൾ പരിഭാഷപ്പെടുത്തുമ്പോൾ). April 10th marks a profound personal milestone. Twenty-eight years ago, on April 10th, 1997, I stepped off the plane at Toronto International Airport, alone, into a country utterly new and unknown. There was no meticulously crafted plan, only an unwavering determination to forge my own path. Now, on April 10th, 2025, looking back, the journey feels incredibly significant. I arrived carrying the weight of someone else's aspirations, and from there, I had to weave in my own dreams. Some initial decisions weren't mine, but ultimately, I charted my own course, and I hold no regrets.

When loved ones inquire about guilt, my answer remains a firm no, never. No guilt, no regrets, because every decision I made felt right for me, and I consciously ensured they didn't negatively impact others. Venturing down unconventional paths has gifted me invaluable life lessons, the kind that classrooms and textbooks can't offer, not even the well-intentioned guidance of parents who always sought to shield me. But life, as it often does, had its own script. I've been blessed with the amazing experience of connecting with diverse individuals, forming cherished friendships, and exploring a multifaceted career. I deliberately pushed my boundaries, embracing discomfort in various professional roles, and emerged a successful human being. These opportunities shattered the self-imposed limitations, proving that the "I can't" I once believed was a lie. As we all know some films entertain, some provoke thought, and then there are those rare gems like 'Malabar Tales' that transport you into a world brimming with history, culture, and mysticism. Rooted in Kerala’s rich folklore, this film is a visual and emotional masterpiece, seamlessly blending mythology with contemporary storytelling. I might feel more because I grew up outside of Kerala just like the Writer/Director/Producer Anil Kunhappan.

The movie weaves together multiple short stories from the Malabar region, interconnecting them with a beautifully written central thread. Each tale is crafted with depth, evoking emotions ranging from awe to introspection. The storytelling never feels rushed, allowing the audience to fully immerse themselves in the magical realism that defines the film.

The cinematography captures the essence of Kerala’s backwaters, forests, and temples, making every frame feel like a painting.

The performances in 'Malabar Tales' are nothing short of extraordinary. Each actor brings their character to life with raw emotion and authenticity, whether it’s the storyteller guiding the audience through these ancient narratives or the villagers embodying the myths passed down for generations.
