Thailand flirts with Russia as US ties cool

Thailand is pursuing closer ties — and possible arms deals — with Russia, with relations between Thailand and its traditional partner, the United States, cooling in the wake of a May 2014 coup.

Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan

Two Thai deputy prime ministers will travel to Russia, just weeks after a visit to Bangkok by the powerful head of Russia’s security council, Nikolai Patrushev.

On the table, officials from both countries say, are wide-ranging talks on trade and security cooperation, as Russia seeks to develop its position as an Asian power.

Most attention has been focused on Thailand’s warming ties with China, including talks on a massive rail project and the possible purchase of $1 billion worth of Chinese-made submarines.

But Russia appears keen to compete for Thailand’s attention.

In the past 18 months, Thai junta leader General Prayuth Chan-ocha has met three times with Russian Prime Minister Dimitry Medvedev, who visited Thailand in April 2015, the Russian ambassador to Thailand, Kirill Barsky, said.

The project documentation for the construction of the bridge across the Kerch Straight, between mainland Russia and the Crimean Peninsula, has finally been approved officially. The accuracy of the estimated cost of the project has also been confirmed.

The construction of the Kerch bridge will cost 211.851.575,730 rubles. The amount is almost 680 million rubles less than the marginal cost of the works established by decree of the Russian Government on 30 January 2015.

More than 30 experts of the state expertise department, Glavgosexpertiza, were involved to check the documentation. The same number of experts worked to verify the accuracy of the estimates. Auditors also came to positive conclusions as a result of their work.

Such a large "army" of specialists who were involved in the works to check the papers and calculations is explained with more than 570 volumes of documents that had been drawn up for the project. The electronic version of the documents makes up 30 gigabytes. Paper and electronic carriers contain information about the area of the construction, engineering survey results, basic design and technical solutions for environmental protection, etc.

The bridge across the Kerch Strait, apart from the unconditional political and economic importance of the construction, is a unique and large-scale creation.

The head of the Federal Road Agency, Roman Starovoit, said that the balance of quality, cost and timing was the main priority in the project.

Volpe Is Recruiting 30+ Student Interns for 2016

Volpe has wrapped up its 2015-2016 outreach season to help recruit talented and diverse individuals to fill positions within Volpe’s dynamic, challenging, and vibrant environment. Volpe technical staff and human resources representatives spoke with students and soon-to-be graduates at more than 12 career fairs and tech talks at campuses throughout the Boston area, highlighting the important work that Volpe does.

More than 30 internship positions and multiple entry-level positions will be available in a variety of transportation fields, including the following:

Engineering (computer, aerospace, electrical, mechanical, civil, environmental, and fire protection)
Economics
Operations research
Community planning
Environmental science
Human factors
Technology policy

When you sign up to do a spot of work shadowing to 'gain an insight into the business', you don't expect to be working for nine hours a day doing the work of a full-time - and fully-paid - employee.

So Chris Jarvis took legal action against entertainment and electronics giant Sony when it refused to pay him for four months' work.

And the company has paid the its 'unpaid intern' £4,600 after the video games design graduate took his case to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

Mr Jarvis, a video games design graduate from Milton Keynes, signed up to do an internship at Sony Computer Entertainment in Cambridge last September.

He signed up for the role of '3D Environment Artist intern' and expected that he would be shadowing a Sony designer to learn about the company.

But he found himself in the office from 9.30am to 6pm every day, testing 3D artwork for games.

'I was basically clicking buttons to make sure the pictures that had come in from China were working,' Mr Jarvis said. 'It's normally part of the Environment Artist's job - but it's time-consuming and boring work.

The 25-year-old, who has a first class degree in Games Art and Design from Norwich University, 'politely informed' the company that they owed him at least minimum wage of £6.19, considering he was effectively working as a full-time employee.

'They were very dismissive and told me I was a volunteer and that's how I could work for free,' he said.

Mr Jarvis said he was also making a daily round-trip commute of three-and-a-half hours to Sony's City House base in Cambridge, a journey which the company agreed to cover in travel expenses.

But he said that after the first month's payment, the travel expenses dried up.

'I was at the end of my overdraft and I didn't know what to do' said Mr Jarvis, who is now a lead graphic designer at Air Raid Clothing in Milton Keynes.

'So I looked into my rights and found that I was legally doing the work of an employee.'

Unpaid: Mr Jarvis, then a recent graduate, expected his internship to involve a few months' shadowing a Sony designer

The case went to a tribunal, and the $20billion company coughed up weeks before it was due to be heard.

Sony ended up paying Mr Jarvis around £1,000 more than he originally asked for.

The company also asked him to sign an agreement to keep quiet about the deal, which Mr Jarvis declined.

Jasmine Patel of solicitors Leigh Day, who dealt with Mr Jarvis's case, said: 'In Chris’s case, it was very clear. We looked at the fact that he had set hours, that he was expected to do the work he was given and that he was required to do that work personally.

She added that employees needed to have a better understanding of workers' rights.

'The only people who will be able to afford to do these internships are the ones who can pay to do them, while the people from poorer backgrounds can’t,' she said.

'On a legal level, under the National Minimum Wage Act 1998, interns who meet the definition of a “worker” are entitled to be paid at least the national minimum wage.

'A key question when determining whether someone is a worker is whether the intern is obliged to perform work or services for the company and whether the organisation is obliged to provide it – i.e. a mutually of obligations.

'If the intern is doing work which is of value to the company this may also be a good indication that the intern is actually a worker and should be paid.

Work experience: Mr Jarvis undertook the internship at Sony Computer Entertainment in Cambridge from September till December 2012

'These cases are very case specific but where there is a mutuality of obligations, someone is really providing value to the company and the internship is for quite a long period - say six months - there will probably be a higher chance that they will be a worker and therefore should be being paid.

'You could argue that someone who comes in every single day and makes the tea should eventually be paid for that service if they’re proving to be of value for the company, but these cases will in the end be decided on a case by case basis.'

According to Government regulations, employers do not have to pay the minimum wage if an internship only involves observing an employee and no work is carried out by the intern.

Charities, voluntary organisations associated bodies and statutory bodies do not have to pay volunteers, but other businesses are not allowed to refuse to pay a worker by claiming they are a volunteer.

About 100,000 young people are thought to be working for no pay and 100 companies are being investigated by HMRC for allegedly breaching minimum wage laws.

Sony declined to comment.

Admit it. When you first heard about people renting rooms in one another's homes over the internet, without much more than a friendly email exchange to break the ice, you thought it was a crazy idea. Maybe a little creepy. After all, it's one thing to participate in the so-called sharing economy by pushing some buttons on your phone and watching a sleek black Uber vehicle roll up. It's another to show up at a stranger's home and nestle in for a few days--or hand your house keys to some guy from the internet.

And yet the founders of Airbnb--Brian Chesky, 33; Nathan Blecharczyk, 31; and Joe Gebbia, 33--have convinced many, many strangers to do just that. So far, about 20 million of them; 10 million in 2014 alone. This year, their website surpassed 800,000 listings worldwide, which means they now offer more lodging than Hilton Worldwide or InterContinental Hotels Group or any other hotel chain in the world.

Seven years ago, they were guys with a website, three air mattresses, and ambitions that to many people sounded silly, naive, and reckless. Since then, they have revolutionized the way people think about travel, displaced the hospitality industry's established players, and generated billions in revenue for themselves and their hosts.

Airbnb has changed many people's lives for the better, as entrepreneurs have long tried to do. What makes this company so noteworthy this year is that it has moved beyond building a disruptive business to battling entrenched interests. Airbnb is hardly alone; after all, this is the year that the U.S. Supreme Court declared internet television startup Aereo's business model illegal, and regulators from Dallas to Germany slapped back at car service operator Uber. Airbnb has also repeatedly found itself and its hosts on the wrong side of the law.

Key facts:

Almost 200 billion cans of food are produced each year. Steel cans mean saving energy as refrigeration is not needed. Cans mean tamper-free and safe food, nutritional value and beneficial environmental impact from recycling.

จนต้องมีการใช้ แคปช่า ตรวจดูว่าใช่คน หรือเปล่าที่กำลังคุยด้วยหรือติดต่อด้วย

หลายคนคงจ้างเครื่องจักรกลเป็นเลขาหรือหุ้นส่วนธุรกิจไปแล้ว

หากว่าเจ้าเครื่องจักรนี้ มันเป็นของฟรี

ในสนามของการแข่งขันและการแย่งชิงทรัพยากร

ทรัพยากรที่ฉลาดที่สุดคงจะเป็นมนุษย์นี่เอง

สินค้าที่ชาญฉลาด

สร้างมูลค่าให้ตัวเอง

Sanctions on Russia could also hurt Germany

As the EU rolls out sanctions against Russia for its military annexation of Crimea, there are fears damaged relations with Moscow and a weakened Rouble could take a toll on Germany's economy.

Russia supplies just over 30 per cent of Germany's natural gas, while Russian energy giant Gazprom sponsors German football team Schalke - currently third in the Bundesliga – to the tune of €10 million a year.

But Germany has a raft of other interests connected with Russia which also play a role in Berlin's desire to maintain a relationship with the Kremlin.

Germany is by far the EU's biggest exporter to Russia, responsible for 30 percent of all EU exports to the country in 2013 - a total of €36 billion.

The second biggest EU exporter is Italy with nine per cent - €10.8 billion.

And German firms have invested more in doing business in Russia than those of any other EU country, according to Die Welt newspaper.

German investments tied up in Russia total over €19 billion, much of it in the form of long-term projects like gas pipelines and car factories.

This situation makes taking back the investments very problematic, should relations between the two countries break down.

The strongest links are in car manufacturing and exports, where German manufacturers have been building a foothold in Russia's growing market for years.

BMW, Volkswagen and lorry makers MAN all have factories in Russia, with VW planning to invest around €1.8 billion in its Russian operations by 2018 according to car industry magazine Automobilwoche.

Over half of German exports to Russia in 2013 were vehicles and machinery.

And on Saturday Karl-Thomas Neumann, boss of car makers Opel, told Automobilwoche his company was "already feeling the stresses and strains from the changing course of the rouble".

Opel, which is owned by US corporation General Motors, sold over 80,000 cars in Russia in 2013.

Overall about 350,000 German jobs depend directly on trade with Russia, Eckhard Cordes, head of Germany's Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations, told Die Welt.

Audi CEO Rupert Stadler, meanwhile, called the fate of the rouble "a great challenge against the background of the political debate over Crimea".

He said Russian inflation could also pose risks. "It will be decisive how inflation develops in Russia and what effects it has on prices for consumer and industrial goods."
