Addiction can be defined as, "a dependence on a behavior or substance that a person is powerless to stop." In the U.S., addiction is one of the most costly public health problems. When we hear the word costly, usually the first thing that comes to mind is money, but if we are addicts or know an addict, we know that money isn't the most expensive cost of addiction.

Addiction is something that steals one's life, personality, passion, and the will to live. It definitely did all of those to me. My life used to be filled with activities, hobbies, and people that I truly enjoyed. As I allowed my addiction to enslave me, I began to lose all of those things, and my life no longer belonged to me. It became my addiction, and I was lost in a cycle of self-destruction.

As my addiction took over my life and took away the things I loved, I saw myself slip away into the shadow of denial. For a period of time longer than I would like, I denied and justified my problems and their relationship to my addiction.

Now, as I try to move forward into recovery and discover my soul again, I feel as though I am being reborn and growing up all over again. I must learn new habits and rituals. I must learn how to enjoy each day for myself and rely on my own light and soul to bring emotional and spiritual satisfaction to my life. I will quote something I say to people everyday; "Enjoy each day because no one else can or will do it for you." It is our own responsibility to enjoy our own lives, experiences, and our emotions and to always learn from them.

I have had a rebirth in my relationships with others and especially with myself and my world (both inner and outer). I can listen to others, myself, and my surroundings more now than at any time in my life. As we all do, I have struggled to keep myself from slipping into the darkness of despair. The best thing I have found to guide myself away from darkness is to know, realize, and understand that the power to overcome anything exists inside of me and requires no outside force or energy. Also, I now know, realize, and understand that I have made it through every problem that I have ever had and the only things that hinders my growth, development, satisfaction, and enjoyment of being alive are my own decisions.

There is nothing in the universe that can judge us and destroy our self-confidence more powerfully than ourselves. I have realized through my own trials that my soul can be whatever I choose it to be. If I choose to ignore my light and my power, I will feel trapped in darkness, powerless, and hopeless. Now, my life is full of enjoyment and light because I have chosen to be the person I want to be and not the person I had let myself become. Nobody made that choice for me, and nobody could have. As long as I relied on my light to come from the outside, I was susceptible to being a subject of the darkness and not the ruler of my own light. Now, I am the ruler of the Light.

I go forward everyday now, knowing that my life is mine to enjoy and that I will enjoy it. I also realize that as long as I allow myself to listen and learn, I will never stop growing and bringing true pleasure and satisfaction to my own soul. And, in doing this, I am finally able to be a positive force in the lives of those I love and those with whom I share existence (human and otherwise).

So, now that I am here, I see deep within my soul and completely understand that from here, there is no going back. Today is all we have; Tomorrow will always be a dream in the sense that now is all we can experience. The past cannot be re-written; therefore all of the darkness is behind me as I walk into the bright light of the sun that is my own soul.

I live my life now as if I will not live tomorrow, because I can only experience what is happening right now. Tomorrow does not exist; “all we have is now…”

Jesus Camp is a 2006 American documentary film directed by Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing about a Pentecostal/charismatic summer camp for children who spend their summers learning and practicing their "prophetic gifts" and being taught that they can "take back America for Christ." According to the distributor, it "doesn't come with any prepackaged point of view" and tries to be "an honest and impartial depiction of one faction of the Evangelical Christian community."

Russian Scientists: H1N1 linked to Genetically Modified Food

Scientists from Russia’s Ministry of Health are warning in a secret report to Prime Minister Putin that they have discovered a ‘critical link’ between the H1N1 influenza (Swine Flu) virus and genetically modified amylopectin potatoes that are consumed in massive quantities nearly exclusively by Westerners and sold in fast food restaurants as French Fries.

According to these reports, the protease enzyme genetically modified in the potatoes being sold through Western fast food restaurants as French Fries to protect against Potato virus X causes an “explosive” replication of the H1N1 influenza virus by increasing the acidic conditions of the endosome and causing the hemagglutinin protein to rapidly fuse the viral envelope with the vacuole's membrane, then causing the M2 ion channel to allow protons to move through the viral envelope and acidify the core of the virus, which causes the core to dissemble and release the H1N1’s RNA and core proteins into the hosts cells.

Evidence confirming these dire findings by top Russian scientists is also supported by the World Health Organization who in their reporting on the current Influenza Pandemic, clearly shows that the H1N1 virus is nearly totally confined to those Western Nations allowing their citizens to consume these genetically modified potatoes, and which include: The United States with over 17,000 cases being reported with 45 deaths; Canada with 2,978 cases; the United Kingdom with 1,226 cases; and Australia with 1,823 cases.

Important to also note about the World Health Organization’s statistics on the spread of the H1N1 Pandemic influenza virus is that the South American Nation of Chile is the only country in the World outside of The United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia to allow the planting of these genetically modified potatoes due to their Free Trade Pact with the US and who are reporting 1,694 cases of this disease.

Also important to note are that most of the World’s largest Nations do not allow the planting of these genetically modified potatoes and therefore are reporting very limited outbreaks of the H1N1 Pandemic influenza, including Russia with 3 cases, China, the World’s most populated country, with 318 cases, and India, the World’s second largest country, with 16.

These reports further state that with the linkage between the H1N1 Pandemic influenza virus and fast food French Fries made from genetically modified potatoes the most venerable people to being infected are the youngest who, by far, are the largest consumers of these types of cheap Western foods, and which was recently confirmed by the Washington Post News Service that reported:

“Of the 5,000 confirmed and more than 100,000 probable cases of swine flu, the average age of infected people is 15; two thirds are younger than 18.”

These reports further warn that though the genetic history of this insidious man-made influenza seems to initially offer some protection for those Nations not consuming these genetically modified potatoes, to believe so would be a “grave mistake” as new evidence is emerging that this H1N1 Pandemic influenza virus is rapidly mutation, and as we can read from these two reports:

“The new strain of influenza appears to have mutated to become more infectious for humans, the online edition of science magazine Nature reported Monday, referencing research by a team including Prof. Yoshihiro Kawaoka of Tokyo University's Institute of Medical Science.

The surface of influenza virus particles are covered with thorn-shaped proteins called hemagglutinin (HA), which allows the virus to stick to human cells.

After analyzing multiple samples of the new flu virus, the team ascertained that in some cases the HA of the new H1N1 strain have mutated, allowing the strain to stick to human cells more easily.

According to Kawaoka, the same mutations have been found in HA of the H5N1 strain of influenza, the highly virulent bird flu, which kills about 60 percent of those it infects. Kawaoka said the virus is still in the process of mutating into a form even more infectious to humans.”

“Brazilian scientists have identified a new strain of the H1N1 virus after examining samples from a patient in Sao Paulo, their institute said Tuesday. The variant has been called A/Sao Paulo/1454/H1N1 by the Adolfo Lutz Bacteriological Institute, which compared it with samples of the A(H1N1) swine flu from California.”

More ominously to be examined in these reports is the response of the United States to this Pandemic which, to date, is the World’s largest infected Nation (reporting 7 more H1N1 flu deaths today) and which has already declared a Public Health Emergency and, just yesterday, passed a bill in its Congress allocating $7.7 Billion to prepare themselves for this catastrophic disease.

What does it mean when the Executive Branch of the US Government's own website has edited the Bill of Rights without an Act of Congress? I'd say it means we are pretty fucked!

The www.whitehouse.gov Version of the Bill of Rights

The First Amendment provides that Congress make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting its free exercise. It protects freedom of speech, the press, assembly, and the right to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The Second Amendment gives citizens the right to bear arms.

The Third Amendment prohibits the government from quartering troops in private homes, a major grievance during the American Revolution.

The Fourth Amendment protects citizens from unreasonable search and seizure. The government may not conduct any searches without a warrant, and such warrants must be issued by a judge and based on probable cause.

The Fifth Amendment provides that citizens not be subject to criminal prosecution and punishment without due process. Citizens may not be tried on the same set of facts twice, and are protected from self-incrimination (the right to remain silent). The amendment also establishes the power of eminent domain, ensuring that private property is not seized for public use without just compensation.

The Sixth Amendment assures the right to a speedy trial by a jury of one's peers, to be informed of the crimes with which they are charged, and to confront the witnesses brought by the government. The amendment also provides the accused the right to compel testimony from witnesses, and to legal representation.

The Seventh Amendment provides that civil cases also be tried by jury.

The Eighth Amendment prohibits excessive bail, excessive fines, and cruel and unusual punishments.

The Ninth Amendment states that the list of rights enumerated in the Constitution is not exhaustive, and that the people retain all rights not enumerated.

The Tenth Amendment assigns all powers not delegated to the United States, or prohibited to the states, to either the states or to the people.

The REAL Bill of Rights

Amendment I

Amendment VII

China, Eminent Domain, State Sovereignty, WAR, Police State, & Colossal Debt

*Eminent Domain*

OK, so if you haven't heard by now, there are sources on the internet claiming that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton signed a written agreement with China that would give the Chinese government eminent domain to property and businesses inside of the U.S.

The Chinese have lent the US Federal Government $800 billion via Treasury debt securities. As of December 2008, the Chinese had $1.946 trillion USD in their currency reserves. Needless to say, China has a very real power to exert over the U.S.

$30 million per hour "is the rate at which China is adding to its reserves of foreign currencies – mostly dollars..."

*State Sovereignty*

Fourteen state congresses in the U.S. have introduced legislation pertaining to the 10th Amendment. The 10th Amendment reads, "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

These States declaring sovereignty are Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington.

*WAR*

Where do we start with the war? We have over a million people dead in Iraq. When does this become a crime against humanity? When does it become wrong to kill innocent people for profit? Just because a new administration has entered the White House with better rhetoric doesn't justify what is still going on daily in the Middle East and around the world due to U.S. occupation and Covert Operations.

As of 2006, the US was spending $8 million per hour just on the war in Iraq. The cost of the war in Iraq to date is more than $601 billion. That is $1,721 per person, $341.4 million per day, and $4,681 per household.

*Police State*

U.S. Military units are conducting training exercises in American Cities and Towns. According to Pentagon Officials, "The U.S. military expects to have 20,000 uniformed troops inside the United States by 2011." There are constantly pieces of legislation introduced and passed by the U.S. government that destroy the civil liberties of the American people.

The U.S. government confiscates reporters' property, there is a national rash of police misconduct and excessive force cases all over the country. Protesters are greeted by riot police. The riot police do not respect the inherent rights of the protesters. There is a move toward the militarization of local police that is funded by the Federal Government.

Oh, and just recently, the U.S. government placed a very large order for domestic riot gear. There are already troops on active duty inside the U.S. under the command of Northern Command.

Antidepressant Drugs May Also Suppress Basic Human Emotions

Antidepressant drugs, already known to cause sexual side effects, may also suppress the basic human emotions of love and romance.

That SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors — the most common type of antidepressant — cause sexual dysfunction is common knowledge. Of the 31 million adults in the United States who take the SSRIs, about 30 percent are believed to experience sexual dysfunction.

But a new theory suggests that SSRI antidepressants may also subtly alter the fundamental chemistry of love and romance, snuffing the first sparks between two people otherwise destined to become lovers, and preventing couples from bonding.

"There's every reason to think SSRIs blunt your ability to fall and stay in love," said Helen Fisher, a Rutgers University biological anthropologist who has pioneered the modern science of love.

For some people, of course, sexual side effects are an acceptable price to pay for curing debilitating depression. But as antidepressant use becomes more common, extending beyond full-blown clinical depression to disorders like anxiety and, in some cases, insomnia, the possibility of love-stunting is troubling.

SSRI antidepressants work by boosting circulating levels of serotonin, a mood-regulating neurotransmitter that also inhibits desire. The drugs also decrease dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved in a wide range of cognitive and behavioral processes, among them desire and arousal. The new research suggests that dopamine may also play a part in romance.

During sex, a cocktail of hormones is released that appears to play important roles in fostering romantic attachment within the brain. Take away sex, and romantic love can dwindle. But this is just part of the problem, say Fisher and University of Virginia psychiatrist James Thomson.

Dopamine also appears central to the neurobiology of romantic love and attachment, conditions that Fisher believes to be affected by — but ultimately distinct from — sexual love and its effects. She and Thomson say that SSRIs may do more than cause sexual dysfunction: They also suppress romance.

"There are all sorts of unconscious systems in our brain that we use to negotiate romantic love and romantic attraction," said Thomson. "If these drugs cause conscious sexual side effects, we'd argue that there are going to be side effects that are not conscious."

According to Fisher, humans have three distinct but interconnected love-related brain systems: one for sex, another for attachment and another for romantic love. This is still hypothetical — nobody knows exactly what love does in the brain — but Fisher has been a pioneering researcher on romantic love's neurobiology, and dopamine indeed appears important.

When couples have just fallen in love, the mere sight of the other causes a jump in dopamine-related brain activity. If they manage to stay in love, with the early flush giving way to long-term affection, those brain patterns stay active.

Reduced dopamine levels, however, are an inevitable effect of SSRIs. Reduce dopamine, say Fisher and Thomson, and the possibility of love itself is reduced.

Though biologically plausible, definitive evidence for this has yet to be found. The only study to specifically test the hypothesis was conducted by Saint Mary's University psychologist Maryanne Fisher, who found that women taking antidepressants tended to have muted reactions when showed pictures of attractive men. The effect was small, however, and the study has not been reproduced.

University of California at Los Angeles psychiatrist Andrew Leuchter acknowledged that increasing serotonin can decrease dopamine, but has not seen difficulties in forming emotional attachments among his patients. "I've seen people who have great difficulty with their emotional attachments, who think they've fallen out of love or want to isolate themselves, come alive again," said Leuchter, who receives funding from antidepressant drugmakers. "I'm not sure the syndrome [Fisher and Thomson] describe exists."

Thomson and Fisher, on the other hand, report the opposite: antidepressant takers who've lost the capacity for romantic feeling.

Clinical studies of antidepressant side effects do little to settle this debate. They've focused on sexual problems, which are far easier to measure than subtle effects on something so ephemeral as a spark.

Thomson recommended that psychologists investigating romance ask test subjects whether they take antidepressants. He also suggests that the possibility of romantic stunting be considered when deciding whether antidepressants should be prescribed to a child or young adult.

"Does it impact the development of those areas of the brain involved in love and sexuality? Does it impair the feelings and behaviors of romantic love and sexuality and the learning processes, which might be required to bring those areas of the brain online?" said Thomson. "We don't know."

Said Fisher, "We want to know about the side effects of other drugs. Why not know about the side effects of these drugs, which affect our reproductive future?"

Another alternative could be drugs that don't boost serotonin. Bupropion, also known as Wellbutrin, increases levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, another neurotransmitter; it's been associated with far lower levels of sexual dysfunction, but doesn't work for everyone.

Drug companies are currently designing next-generation antidepressants that raise dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine levels simultaneously, and might have fewer romantic side effects. However, none of these drugs are yet on the market, and projected side effects remain hypothetical.

"Any drug in development is always better than anything out there," said Leuchter. "And then, once they hit the market, nothing is perfect."

Pentagon Imposes Secrecy on U.S. Budget Process

WASHINGTON, Feb 25 (Reuters) - Top Pentagon officials have had to agree in writing to keep this year's budget talks a secret as they confront thorny questions about the future of expensive U.S. weapons programs, a spokesman said on Wednesday.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates took the unusual step of requiring nondisclosure agreements of all senior officials who wanted to participate in the fiscal debate, including the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

President Barack Obama, who inherited a recession and a trillion-dollar deficit when he took office on Jan. 20, will send his first budget proposal to Congress on Thursday but a comprehensive fiscal plan is not expected until April.

Some budget watchers believe the Pentagon's base budget could rise as much as 4 percent from a current $515 billion but would remain well below the $581 billion initially sought for the new fiscal year by the Bush administration.

Up to now, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been funded by separate supplemental bills and not through the base budget.

Total U.S. government spending stands at more than $3 trillion a year.

"Everybody who's participating in this process -- these are the highest-ranking people in this department -- were asked to sign," Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell told reporters.

Obama has pledged to break with the unprecedented secrecy of the Bush administration and allow greater openness in government activities.

But Gates, a former CIA director, is trying to prevent leaks as his department weighs cuts in expensive programs and rebalances budget priorities to reflect the demands of unconventional warfare in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Pentagon officials also said some budget details are classified and cannot be revealed without violating federal law, while others are commercially sensitive.

"This is highly sensitive stuff involving programs costing tens of billions of dollars, employing hundreds of thousands of people and go to the heart of national security," Morrell said.

Budget discussions are expected to include high-stakes decisions on the fate of programs such as Lockheed Martin Corp's (LMT.N) premier F-22 fighter jet.

Obama himself vowed to crack down on costly military programs this week, citing a project to build a new presidential helicopter that is more expensive than the president's plane.

Gates has also told Congress the global economic downturn and war costs in Iraq and Afghanistan would force tough decisions on weapons programs.

"We understand these (programs) involve huge corporations that have a lot riding on the outcome of these discussions," Morrell said.

Top Pentagon suppliers Boeing Co (BA.N), Northrup Grumman
Corp, General Dynamics Corp (GD.N), BAE Systems (BAES.L) and Raytheon Co (RTN.N) are anxiously awaiting news of possible cuts in their programs.

Lockheed defended its F-22 program this month in a full-page advertisement in the Washington Post that emphasized the number of jobs sustained by the program.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict said on Saturday there were worrying signs of a new type of eugenics based on perfection and physical beauty.

"Certainly, the eugenistic and racial ideologies that in the past humiliated man and provoked immense suffering are not being proposed again, but a new mentality is creeping in that tends to justify a different consideration of life and personal dignity," the pope said in a speech to the Pontifical Academy for Life.

"So it tends to privilege the capacity to operate, efficiency, perfection and physical beauty at the expense of other types of existence considered unworthy."

Eugenics is a belief in the possibility of improving the human race by weeding out those with what are considered undesirable traits and encouraging procreation by those with desirable traits.

The pope also spoke out against reducing humans to an object of "experimental manipulation" and allowing biotechnology to "surrender to the will of the strongest."

Pope Benedict has condemned genetic engineering and other scientific practices that allow people to select so-called "designer babies" by screening them for defects.

The Vatican considers pre-implantation diagnosis of embryos to avoid genetic defects or select for qualities like gender morally unacceptable. It is also against genetic enhancement for purposes other than medical treatment.

(NaturalNews) The FDA has effectively banned a naturally-occurring form of vitamin B6 called pyridoxamine by declaring it to be a drug, reports the American Association for Health Freedom. Responding to a petition filed by a drug company, the FDA declared pyridoxamine to be "a new drug."

Pyridoxamine occurs naturally in fish, chicken and other foods (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_B6), putting the FDA in the strange position of banning a substance from dietary supplements even though it is already present in the food supply.

The FDA's war on Mother Nature

It's not the first time the FDA has declared a natural molecule to be a "drug" while attacking nutritional supplements that contain the same molecule. A similar story unfolded with red yeast rice and the lovastatin molecules it contains that lower high cholesterol. The drug companies engaged in biopiracy, ripping off the molecule from red yeast rice to make their now-famous "statin drugs." Once the statin drugs were patented, Big Pharma and the FDA went after red yeast rice, claiming the supplement was "adulterated with pharmaceuticals."

It wasn't really adulterated, of course. It just contained a natural statin-drug-like molecule that the drug companies copied and patented.

It would be like Big Pharma patenting vitamin C, then the FDA claiming that all oranges and lemons were adulterated with drugs because they naturally contain their own vitamin C.

So will this ruling on pyridoxamine affect nutritional supplements? Yes, any supplements containing this form of vitamin B6 can now be declared "adulterated" by the FDA. Such is the nature of the FDA's agenda to criminalize nutritional supplement companies and limit consumers' access to Mother Nature's remedies.

Panasonic Orders Some Families Home on Pandemic Risk

Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Panasonic Corp., the world’s largest maker of consumer electronics, ordered Japanese employees in several emerging markets to send their families back to Japan on concern of a potential influenza pandemic.

The company in December instructed staff assigned to parts of Asia, Africa, eastern Europe and South America to repatriate their families by September, Akira Kadota, a spokesman for Osaka- based Panasonic, said by telephone today. He declined to comment on the number of employees or households affected.

Panasonic said last week it will cut about 15,000 jobs and report a loss this year. More than half of the company’s 209 subsidiaries outside Japan as of April 2008 were in the Asia- Pacific region.

“It’s a bit of a surprise,” said Naoteru Teraoka, who helps oversee $21 billion at Chuo Mitsui Asset Management Co. in Tokyo. “I would understand if there was a sudden outbreak that warranted concern, but there don’t seem to be any recent developments.”

Panasonic may be the first major company to order families home on concern people wouldn’t receive needed health care in case of a widespread flu outbreak. A pandemic could kill 71 million people worldwide and lead to a “major global recession” costing $3 trillion, according to a worst-case scenario outlined by the World Bank in October.

“This is part of our preparations for a new type of influenza,” Kadota said by telephone. “We chose areas after considering the prevalence of bird flu, and the capability of medical facilities and access to them. This is not part of the cost cutting.”

Singapore Staff Spared

The world is closer to another influenza pandemic than at any time since 1968, when the last of the previous century’s three pandemics occurred, according to the World Health Organization.

The company has been reviewing how to handle a pandemic, and decided to repatriate families after consulting Japan’s government and the Geneva-based WHO, Kadota said.

Honda Motor Corp., Japan’s second-biggest carmaker, considered bringing home families of expatriates in China after a woman in Beijing infected with bird flu died on Jan. 5, said Hideto Maekawa, a spokesman for the company. The carmaker has advised employees to cut down on “unnecessary and non-urgent” business trips, he said.

Panasonic isn’t concerned about any single country more than others, and Singapore staff won’t be affected by the repatriation, he said. The Nikkei newspaper reported the plans earlier.

International health officials have been monitoring the H5N1 strain of avian influenza for more than a decade for signs it could mutate into a form that is easily spread between humans. H5N1 has infected at least 406 people in 15 countries since 2003, killing 63 percent of them, according to the WHO’s Web site. The organization lists 11 cases of the virus in humans this year.

Panasonic shares added 0.9 percent to 1,130 yen. The stock plunged 52 percent last year.

H.R. 45: Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009
To provide for the implementation of a system of licensing for purchasers of certain firearms and for a record of sale system for those firearms, and for other purposes.
This is the first FEDERAL bill introduced in the house that mandates licensing for all firearms owners. If it passes and is signed into law:

•You will have to carry a photo ID firearms license.
•A training class is required to be licensed.
•Disclosure of your storage method is required for license.
•A thumb print is required for license.
•Every sale recorded by the federal government.
•If you move, and don't tell the Attorney General within 60 days, you are a criminal.
•If a firearm is stolen and you don't report it, you are a criminal.

There will be no grandfathered firearms. If you do not obtain a license and report every firearm you currently own, you are a criminal. There will be a license fee and a fee for the "services" provided at purchase time. Licenses must be renewed every five years.

Study Finds Gun control doesn't reduce crime or violence.
This report noted that many schools have programs intended to prevent gun violence. However, it added, some studies suggest that children's curiosity and teenagers' attraction to risk make them resistant to the programs or that the projects actually increase the appeal of guns.

This study noted the number of criminals who obtained guns from retail outlets was dwarfed by the number of those who picked up their arms through means other than legal purchases. The report was the result of interviews with more than 18,000 state and federal inmates conducted nationwide. It found that nearly 80 percent of those interviewed got their guns from friends or family members, or on the street through illegal purchases.

Less than 9 percent were bought at retail outlets and only seven-tenths of 1 percent came from gun shows.

The Justice Department's interviews also showed so-called "assault weapons" are not a major cause of gun violence. Only about 8 percent of the inmates used one of the models covered in the now-expired assault weapons ban, signed into law by the Clinton administration in 1994.

In a 244-188 vote, the US House of Representatives passed Obama's 647 page, $819,000,000,000 ($819 Billion) Stimulus Package. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said government borrowing prompted by enactment of the plan would add another $347 billion, pushing the stimulus package over $1,000,000,000,000 ($1 Trillion); including interest.

Some lawmakers and budget experts have raised concerns that many of the temporary increases in spending included in the economic stimulus package for health care and other programs could become permanent, USA Today reports.

U.N. crime chief says drug money flowed into banks
VIENNA: The United Nations' crime and drug watchdog has indications that money made in illicit drug trade has been used to keep banks afloat in the global financial crisis, its head was quoted as saying on Sunday.

Vienna-based UNODC Executive Director Antonio Maria Costa said in an interview released by Austrian weekly Profil that drug money often became the only available capital when the crisis spiralled out of control last year.

"In many instances, drug money is currently the only liquid investment capital," Costa was quoted as saying by Profil. "In the second half of 2008, liquidity was the banking system's main problem and hence liquid capital became an important factor."

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime had found evidence that "interbank loans were funded by money that originated from drug trade and other illegal activities," Costa was quoted as saying. There were "signs that some banks were rescued in that way."

Profil said Costa declined to identify countries or banks which may have received drug money and gave no indication how much cash might be involved. He only said Austria was not on top of his list, Profil said.

Study Finds High-Fructose Corn Syrup Contains Mercury

MONDAY, Jan. 26 (HealthDay News) -- Almost half of tested samples of commercial high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) contained mercury, which was also found in nearly a third of 55 popular brand-name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first- or second-highest labeled ingredient, according to two new U.S. studies.

HFCS has replaced sugar as the sweetener in many beverages and foods such as breads, cereals, breakfast bars, lunch meats, yogurts, soups and condiments. On average, Americans consume about 12 teaspoons per day of HFCS, but teens and other high consumers can take in 80 percent more HFCS than average.

"Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by industry and the [U.S. Food and Drug Administration] to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply," said the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy's Dr. David Wallinga, a co-author of both studies.

In the first study, researchers found detectable levels of mercury in nine of 20 samples of commercial HFCS. The study was published in current issue of Environmental Health.

In the second study, the agriculture group found that nearly one in three of 55 brand-name foods contained mercury. The chemical was most common in HFCS-containing dairy products, dressings and condiments.

The use of mercury-contaminated caustic soda in the production of HFCS is common. The contamination occurs when mercury cells are used to produce caustic soda.

"The bad news is that nobody knows whether or not their soda or snack food contains HFCS made from ingredients like caustic soda contaminated with mercury. The good news is that mercury-free HFCS ingredients exist. Food companies just need a good push to only use those ingredients," Wallinga said.
