Lawyers to seek bail for murder accused Patrick Powell today

Lawyers representing businessman Patrick Powell, who is charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of 17-year old Khajeel Mais, are to apply for bail when he returns to the Home Circuit Court on Friday, July 29.

The date for the bail hearing was set Monday morning, July 25, when Mr. Powell appeared in court.

Prosecutors told the court they have submitted some statements to the defence and they will serve additional material on Friday.

This after defence attorneys complained that they had not been served with all the material in the matter.

Mavado charged with assault

Dancehall artist Mavado will appear in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court in St. James on August 8 to answer the two charges which were laid against him.

The 30-year old artist, whose given name is David Brooks, was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and malicious destruction of property.

The charges are in connection with an incident on Friday evening, July 22.

Mavado is accused of assaulting a man and damaging his Toyota Camry motorcar, after an argument along the Belmont main road in St. James.

Integrity Commission clears T&T PM

The Integrity Commission has cleared Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar of breaching the Integrity in Public Life Act.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, – The Integrity Commission has cleared Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar of breaching the Integrity in Public Life Act when she stayed at the home of two friends whose family company won the bid for a multi-million-dollar government contract, after the 2010 general elections.

A complaint had been made to the Commission by the opposition People’s National Movement (PNM) which questioned whether Persad-Bissessar staying at the home of Ralph and Maureen Gopaul had anything to do with the family’s trucking company winning a TT$40 million (US$6.3 million) contract from state-owned National Petroleum.

The Prime Minister announced at yesterday’s post-Cabinet press conference that the Integrity Commission had found that her hands were clean.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, – Policymakers, executives and other practitioners in the tourism industry will explore ways to beat the global recession, when they meet in St. Martin in September for the first ever Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) State of the Industry Conference.

The CTO – which organises the conference in collaboration with the St. Martin Tourist Office – has announced that discussion on this issue will revolve around a theme that demonstrates the Caribbean’s determination to overcome the current challenges and to develop solutions to some of the most urgent issues facing the tourism industry in the Caribbean. Telecoms companies in Antigua clash

A fight over mobile service disruption leads to a court injunction filed by Digicel against the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA).

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, – Digicel has won a High Court injunction to get the state-owned Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) to stop blocking calls from the telecoms provider’s customers.

The injunction granted yesterday compels APUA to “take all necessary steps to fully restore the interconnection links as between Digicel’s network and APUA’s network”, according to a statement from Digicel.

The company said the interconnection link was severed on Monday evening, causing widespread disruption to telecommunications services in Antigua and Barbuda. This resulted in Digicel customers being unable to connect to both LIME and APUA mobile customers as well as a disruption in connecting to APUA landlines, both residential and commercial.

The disruption has also affected inbound calls to the Digicel Network from all other providers, including inbound and outbound international calls.

St. Kitts & Nevis to introduce single-sex education

Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas expressed concern about what he termed a gender imbalance at the University of the West Indies (UWI), which has been traced to the primary schools.

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, – St. Kitts and Nevis will introduce single-sex education for students from Grades Three to Six in primary schools come September.

Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas said it would begin at three of the larger primary schools in the country.

He expressed concern about what he termed a gender imbalance at the University of the West Indies (UWI), which has been traced to the primary schools.

“The number of females at this important institution now outnumbers the males by a ratio of more than two to one. This imbalance, clearly, is not one that magically emerges when our young people arrive at UWI. It is a trend that has been developing throughout the region over time. It is a trend that can be seen right there in the Federation and it is a trend, the signs of which are emerging early,” Dr. Douglas said.

Duo guilty of British honeymooners murder

The verdict came on the three-year anniversary of the shooting in Antigua that led to the deaths of Benjamin and Catherine Mullany.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, – Three years exactly to the date that British honeymooners Benjamin and Catherine Mullany were shot at a resort in Antigua, two men charged with their murders as well as the killing of a Jamaican shopkeeper were convicted of the crimes.

After more than 10 hours of deliberation that ended after 11 o’clock last night, Kaniel Martin, 23, and Avie Howell, 20, were found guilty of murdering the Mullanys in their cottage at Coco’s Resort, and Woneta Anderson two weeks later.

Justice Richard Floyd, who presided over the almost two-month trial, scheduled sentencing for September 26, by which time social inquiry reports and psychiatric reports on the two should be completed.

Tropical wave forms in the Western Atlantic

A large tropical wave and low pressure system east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles shows signs of organisation.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, - A large tropical wave accompanied by a well-defined low pressure system continues to show signs of organisation and the latest report from the National Hurricane Centre places the system about 1200 miles east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles the National Hurricane Center said.

“Environmental conditions are conducive for gradual development over the next few days” as it moves west or west-northwestward at 15-20 miles per hour", the National Hurricane Centre said this morning in an advisory at 8:00 a.m. Barbados time.

Elsewhere Tropical Storm Don continues to move west-northwest near 14MPH with maximum sustained winds near 50MPH. At 4am CDT the centre of Don was located near latitude 25.3N and longitude 93.6W

Mother and Daughter found beheaded

The decapitated bodies of the two women, which were found at their home in Lauriston on the outskirts of Spanish Town in St. Catherine Wednesday morning, July 20, have been identified.

They are Charmaine Couver-Rattray, 40, and her 19-year old daughter Joyette Lynch otherwise called "Crystal".

It is understood that shortly after 6:00 a.m., a relative of the dead women called Joyette on her cellular phone, but did not receive a response.

The relative then went to the home of the women, where their headless bodies were found on a bed.

The police were called to scene and the bodies subsequently removed.

X6 suspect Patrick Powell charged

The police have finally charged the main suspect in the killing ofKingston Collegestudent Khajeel Mais.

Fifty-year-old Patrick Powell, a businessman ofBelgrade Loop, St Andrew who was implicated in the shooting death of 17-year-old Khajeel Mais on Friday, July 1, 2011 has been charged.

He was charged Monday by detectives from the Major Investigations Taskforce (MIT).

Powell has been charged with murder, shooting with intent, illegal possession offirearm, illegal possession of ammunition and failure to produce firearm for inspection.

He is to appear in the Half Way Tree Criminal Court tomorrow, July 21, 2011.

Popular Dancehall selector turned deejay, Tony Matterhorn is at odd renowned Dancehall comedic duo, Twin of Twins regarding comments the Twins made during an interview last Wednesday.

The Twins, Paul & Patrick Gaynor gave an interview for an Atlanta based radio station; calling Matterhorn out for the fact that the Bass Odysseysound selector chooses not to play their songs. "Yuh have nuff artistes weh seh dem nah do show weh wi deh pon. Matterhorn do it already and dem laugh wid mi when dem see wi and mi nuh hate Matterhorn. Mi nuh do Matterhorn nutten fi him nuh play mi song dem neither," one of the Twins intimated to ricovibes.com

The statement infuriated Matterhorn; prompting him the following day to blast the Twins via Twitter. "How y'all never told me Twin of Twins was dissing me today on a radio station in Atl! The National Security Minister says having more police on the streets should improve response to crime.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, - Government is moving to have a more visible presence of police officers in the communities and on the streets.

Minister of National Security Brigadier John Sandy said the concept “intends to ensure the entire citizenry feel more comfortable with a police presence so we have a crime free society…where victims do not feel like perpetrators”.

He outlined several elements of the programme which includes training and instilling integrity, accountability and better communication skills to police officers, adding that Government is hoping that the initiative brings about a more proactive police service.

Korean firm buys majority shares in Jamaica power company

Government has approved sale of the JPS shares to Korea East-West Power Company Limited.

KINGSTON, Jamaica, – Cabinet has consented to Marubeni Corporation's transfer of 50 per cent of its shares in the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) to Korea East-West Power Company limited (EWP).

The transfer means that EWP will have 40 percent interest in the JPS, Marubeni Corporation’s interest will be reduced from 80 percent to 40 percent, the Government will retain its 19.9 percent, and about 3,000 shareholders will continue to own the remaining 0.1 per cent.

Minister of Energy and Mining Clive Mullings says EWP is expected to significantly improve the operations of the JPS.

Chemical leak at old mine in Jamaica under control

Earlier this week, reports were made by residents of Pennants that there might be a leak from a tank at the mine containing a toxic substance.

KINGSTON, Jamaica, – Minister with responsibility for Information, Telecommunications and Special Projects, Daryl Vaz, says that the site of the old gold mine in the southern parish Clarendon has been secured and relevant agencies assigned to address the chemical leak threat there. And he says he’s satisfied that the situation is now under control.

Vaz said the assurance was conveyed to the Prime Minister Bruce Golding, by the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA).

He added that directives have been given to ensure that there is no problem for the residents and the area around the closed AUSJAM mine in Pennants, Clarendon.

Gold mining could resume in Jamaica soon

The country's only ever gold mine which shut down nearly two years ago could be back in operation this year.

KINGSTON, Jamaica, – Operations at a gold mine in Pennants, Clarendon, which ceased nearly two years ago, could resume soon, according to the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA).

Chief Executive Officer of NEPA, Peter Knight, said the agency was advised that the operators, AUSJAM Limited, “wished to return to re-activate the site” – the first and only such facility to be operated in Jamaica.

This is based on reports of additional gold deposits in the area.

Commissioner of the Mines and Geology Division, Ministry of Energy and Mining, Clinton Thompson, said based on knowledge of the area’s geology, “there are some more deposits on the site which require further exploration."

The IRIE Music Awards has been created to foster the growth of the Canadian reggae and world music industry by recognizing excellence and increasing exposure for Canadian artists in these genres.

Celebrating the best in Canadian reggae and world music, the inaugural IRIE Music Awards will take place on Friday, July 29th , 2011 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre.
