Yes, you are the MAN!

I call you "the man" because you had the guts to get up and ask me that single question. The bus had stopped in the middle of the road in the busy Kadawatha town, everyone in the bus was staring at me and I was crying, yet you had the guts to ask that question.

"ඇයි අක්කේ ඔයාට මම මොනවද කලේ?"

Sorry I could not answer your question. That conductor in the bus was rude. He kicked you out of the bus before I could put a few decent words together to answer you.

Another man took your seat because you were made to get out and I was sad.

I was sad because you could not see the climax of the drama you carefully plotted. The conductor asked me, why I did not tell him of your presence. I was silent because I was so damn angry and helpless. Then he asked me why I did not tell anyone around of your intentions. I told him that everyone around saw and heard that I was uncomfortable siting there. The next question of the conductor was : "Why didn't you tell the lady sitting next to you what happened?" I told the conductor that she was informed. Then I saw her looking out of the window, dreaming, may be of the dinner that she's going to have.

So, I guess you bribed all those people in the bus, but one small question : why couldn't you bribe the conductor?

It is not just me, I have heard that you have met so many girls in the bus. At the end of the encounter, I wonder how all these girls have different stories to tell their friends. From where do you get those awesome ideas to do the same thing in so many different ways?

That day, in the Kandy - Colombo CTB, you were sitting behind me and I was sharing the seat with a lady. As soon as I passed the Kandy Hospital, I felt that something is moving between my body and the seat on which I have reclined. I got up to see if it was a cockroach or something in the seat. Were you watching all that?

There was no cockroach and the seat was all good. I sat again and in few minutes I felt the same again. I felt something was not right and just out of curiosity looked behind. Do you remember me staring at you while the bus passed Kandy High Courts Complex? Oh, sorry, you might not have seen me as you were busy sleeping. You had your head on the back of my seat and looked tired. Your hands were anyway hidden. We all know that, when someones leans their head on the back of the seat at your front, one can hardly see your hands.

You mastermind, took advantage of that simple fact. How carefully plotted! No one would ever think that you were trying to slip your fingers through the small opening between the horizontal and vertical pieces of wood/metal that'd make up a seat in a bus.

I was angry and I took the best method possible. I talked to you. Do you remember me asking you to sleep without making me feel uncomfortable? I agree that I was bit angry in the tone. But, never thought that it would make you so pissed off. I mean did I make you angry so much that you started hitting my seat with your fist? To tell you the truth, I was petrified when you started hitting my seat. All the horror stories of guys who have killed or injured girls flashed in-front of my eyes within a few seconds.

And again, how did you manage to bribe them? All the people around enjoyed the show. They were looking on, mesmerized. Did you manage to steal that perfume from the protagonist of "Perfume"? Please answer me Mr. Unknown - I'm seriously wondering.

There are stickers saying that people like you should be reported. Heard that the police doesn't let you walk out easily. Yeah now I get it. You know how to mesmerize people. You are a master mind. So the police needs you. HR division of the Police must be monitoring the calls made by girls on issues like this. Through those calls, they can acquire the best talent in the country. Oh hey, I remember watching a movie where a thief was hired to catch another thief. How about that?

You are a good sleeper. No matter what happens, you can sleep well and let your extended parts of the body do their own work. That is awesome. Multi taskers are the new fad. Many companies must be dying to take you in.

Oh, talking of multi-tasking, do you remember that day when I was about to spill my whole bottle of water on your head beacuse your hands were not sleeping although your eyes were? I did not do that because my brother called me just as I opened the lid of my bottle. It was my brother who saved you from having bath inside a bus climbing those Kadugannawa hills on a cold night. Think I could not tell you that before. Please call and thank him for saving you that day.

On another note Mr.X, have you ever wondered what girls tell their friends after meeting you?

Haven't you heard that angry people age fast? So, I guess if you continue to make your presence in the busses, all the young girls you eye would grow old soon. Alas, then the ministers would buy luxury cars with the money allocated for you by the budget.

Let alone us the girls, do you know how much our loved ones worry when we get late to come home? Fathers ask us not to come home late at night because of you. After one encounter with you, my brother prohibited me to come home on Friday nights and told me he would not open the door if I ring the door bell after nine. That was a serious fight Mr. X! I didn't go home for two consecutive Fridays because of you.

Don't you see that we get perceived by our loved ones as fragile and helpless because of you? We try to stay strong and you block our ways by being so brave.

Yeah, how can I not call you brave when you have the guts to stop your motorcycle right in front of my house and utter some filth and fly while my father was waiting in the other side till I cross the road?

When I was schooling, I talked to you only in English to show others that I know English. During those times, you flew away at my English but now you do not. Let alone English, now you do not even care about French.

You have grown. You have learned new tricks. Above all you have learnt the art of bribing people. Or do you think that a girl without a university T-shirt or a school uniform is an easy catch?

Whatever it is, dear Mr. X, you are remembered : for your bravery, courage, intelligence and above all the ability to make a girl mentally very unstable.

Yeah, I must tell you this : after I met you in that Kandy - Colombo CTB bus, I hallucinate.

Whenever I fall sleep in a bus, I wake up feeling that you are sitting behind me. Sometimes, I wonder whether it is just telepathy as all the girls are friends if you are in the other side of the battle line.

So, Mr. X, this is the question I'm dying to know the answer for. You may Ignore all the questions in the post and please answer this so that I can sleep in peace.

Birds start their daily gossip session and I open my eyes to a room that is far away from my own. Windows are open and the sky is already painted with a reddish hue of the rising sun. Time is still 5.40 but seems everything including nature is getting ready to fight the daily battle.

I get off the bed, treat myself with a shower and start dressing up. I hear a faint "Good Morning" from a soul still comfortably covered in warm a bed sheet. My roommate is still half asleep. I dress up, pack my bag, wave goodbye to whoever awake at that time and climb down the staircase to the ground floor of our building. My landlady is usually found having her breakfast and her cat runs around asking for more food or probably more attention. In a second, a door opens and you hear a gate latch adds its mark to the morning choir of sounds.

I’m out in the lane. Cars, mothers, kids and even the dogs are seen running towards the A1. I join the race too. Survival in Colombo depends on how fast you adapt to the race.

The city has already woken up. I see a motionless line of vehicles towards Colombo and an empty road towards Kandy. A bus to Kandy passes by slowly and my mind rushes back to the city where my heart lies. School children are already in the road and the pre-school gate is already surrounded by cars, parents and children. Note my friend, time is still 6.30am and the pre-school kids are already at their school. Memories of my childhood pass through my mind, just like a movie in slow motion. I used to walk to the pre-school with my mother & around 9'O Clock in the morning.

I cross the road and wait for a 138. The sun is up, shining harshly. It is right above the bus and the bus board is invisible due to the bright light. I wait till the bus comes close, put my hand to summon it to stop. Bus is already crowded. People are sweating, conductor is shouting and those who are lucky enough to get a seat listen to music or enjoy the wayside life that passes by. If it was Kandy, 6.30 would be still cold and dark enough to make you sleep like a cat. Colombo is so different. It is filled with life that has no “life”. Or at least that is what most of the people who have moved to Colombo from other parts of the country say.

A guy stares at a girl, a school child struggles to pass through the crowd with his enormous bag, a pervert tries to satisfy his fancies and the bus arrives at Fort. I get down and walk to the office. A man sits in the pavement with a weighing scale and another sits looking down at his artificial leg. I spend a moment at the latter to give him a little of my money. The road is crossed twice and another walk is needed to get my already tired self to the office.

A cool breeze that comes from the sea passes through the buildings and a cool gust of wind treats me as I enter the building of 38 floors. The second good morning of my day is well received by the security personnel of the big office complex. One of the shops located in the ground floor steals a considerable amount (compared to the money spent at a university canteen for breakfast) of my hard earned money. Two elevators are ridden, a number of fashionably dressed ladies passed and I arrive at the lift. A VISA office is located in my part of the building and in some mornings, the VISA office results in gathering an interesting lot of people at the lift. If there is no VISA crowd, it is the same old work crowd.

The lift bell rings, door opens and as the door closes, another person is seen running towards the already closing door. Someone at the controlling panel signals the lift to stop and one makes a dramatic entrance with a big satisfying sigh. The sigh is sometimes followed by a “Thank You” or a smile.

The lift stops at several floors before it arrives at the floor in which my office is located. Till the lift slowly moves up, I tweet or steal a glance at the people around me. After all, people watching in Colombo is always an interesting activity.

As I was typing the post, it just occurred to me how simple my life was. I used to wake up around 7.30 and go to work at 8.00 after the "Operation Saree" was abandoned after few months of teaching at the ELTU. It is just a fifteen minute bus journey or my dad would simply drop me there on his way to work. I used to walk about 15 minutes each day passing green trees, golden sun rays and students hurrying to their lectures. There was no rush, no elevators nor aluminium in hands when I reached my work place then. I envy that life. Peradeniya is a place missed by everyone who has left it.

The danger of being the obedient kid

We all have seen that kid.

He does all the school work and never eats from the canteen because the mother does not like it. (For the sake of gender equality, I will use “she” for the next sentences) She never buys a dress that is not approved by the father and she never cries thinking of the shoes that the next door neighbor has got for her birthday. She is happy with what she has.

It is the dream of every parent to raise an obedient kid. Even if the kid is nasty, parents wish he/she was obedient and it is not exaggeration if I say that such nasty kids have at least once heard his/ her mom saying “Look at that kid, he listens to his parents and never fusses around like you do. Look around and learn how to behave”

It is true that obedient kids make lives easier for the parents but for the kid, it can be a trap in the long run. Having only lived on this planet for quarter of a century, my assumptions may be wrong, but still, it is good to raise a voice.

For me, raising an obedient kid is like raising a kid inside a box. Simply, the kid has to fit in the box that his/her parents have created to be called obedient. If the kid tries to jump out of the box or at least tries to set one foot out of the box, many parents tend to believe that the kid is going to be out of control and somehow try to get the kid back inside the box. Some parents succeed and some parents do not.

So what is the danger of raising a kid inside a box?

Well, you kill the independence and tell him that he is not good at taking decisions. At a very early age, a child does not know what is good and what is bad. So, it is OK to tell him what is good and what is bad, nevertheless, as parents, I think we should be very tactful to understand the thin line between telling things to kids and controlling them. If your kid listens to you and if you call him very obedient, as a parent, I think you should worry a little bit about his/ her future.

Obedient kids are usually silent, seldom cry for things like toys, hardly fight with other siblings and most importantly speak less of their needs/likes. Sometimes, they want so many things, but keep silent because it is not nice to nag. Such kids are happy with what they have or else, they are too conscious of the image they have as the obedient kid.

If such kids break out of the good box (that parents have created) and cry endlessly till they get that car, the” obedient kid” label would be lost and they would be just another member in the nasty gang of kids. So, my point is, just for that “obedient kid” label, children might be emotionally trapped in the box created by their parents. In another words, in many circumstances, obedient kids are controlled by their parents rather than the whims and fancies of the kid himself.

When the obedient kid finds himself in the school, he slowly pulls himself away from the parental control. It might happen intentionally or unintentionally, but nobody can stop the psychology of the kid being affected by the day-to-day activities at the school. For the nasty kid, school can be a fun experience where he gets to have fun with others, but the obedient kid might secretly look for another force that can control him/her in the school.

For him, listening to parents and doing what they like is life. They are used to being rewarded materially, verbally or mentally for being obedient and it is not surprising to find such kids stay obedient at the school too. They listen to teachers, never eat during classes, do all the work the teachers assign and never associate the fun gang in the class who talks about the 12th boy friend of the prettiest girl in the next class. As a reason, the obedient kid will get high grades, secure a good reputation in the school and the parents & teachers both would be happy.

While all the people are happy about the kid, hmm, well, let us call him an adult now, he might have become a silent victim of obedience. For example, the obedient adult may be a top performer as a team member because he listens to what the leader says. He will try his level best not to hurt the other members of the team because his parents have taught him hurting other people is bad. (Being an obedient kid, such advice is etched hard into his brains). However, when promoted to the role of a Team Leader, he might have a hard time leading because there is no controlling force above him.

In another universe, an obedient kid might be the most messed up adult because he/she does not know how to stand for himself and take decisions that reflect his needs and wants. Sometimes, the obedient kid might need a controlling force throughout his/her life and if not, he/she might run astray. If the controlling force is white, the consequences will be white too. However, the matters might get worse if the force is black. As the obedient kid is raised to obey, the danger lies in the fact that he/she might let anyone to control their lives. Understanding what is good and what is bad alone can also be a taxing task for such individuals because being obedient kids, most of such kids loose the opportunity to associate the so called bad people and learn how to tackle them.

For the former obedient kid, human relationships are all about obeying others and not hurting them. For example, such an obedient kid will say yes to a company trip that falls on his brother’s wedding just because he feels he should obey the boss. The situation can get worse if such an obedient individual gets caught up between two or three controlling forces with different intentions.

Everything will be fine until the obedient adult realize that he/she has been controlled by everyone around them. I have known a few individuals who have been very obedient kids and later have changed into very different individuals when they have realized this hard truth. Some of them had realized it too late so that even though they want to distance themselves from the controlling forces, they are not in a position to do so.

I’m not a parent yet; therefore, I’m not sure where the thin line which separates obedient kids from the ones who are “not-so-obedient-but-knows-how-to-be-independent” lies.

Presentation කියන වචනය ඇසු සැණින් බොහෝ දෙනාගේ මතකයට එන ඊළඟ වචනය MS Powerpoint. අද කියන්න යන්නේ PowerPoint වෙනුවට පාවිච්චි කරන්න පුළුවන් අමුතු තාලයේ presentation හදන්න පුළුවන් web application එකක් ගැන. Web application කිව්වට බයවෙන්න දෙයක් නැහැ Prezi Desktop application එක භාවිතා කලොත් ඉන්ටනෙට් නැතිව වුණත් අපිට මේ කියන අමුතු තාලයේ presentation හදන්න පුළුවන්.

මොකක්ද මේකේ තියන විශේෂත්වය?

හැමෝම දන්න Powerpoint වල slide එකක් කියන්නේ අපිට විස්තර ඇතුලත් කරන්න පුළුවන් හිස් පිටුවක් වගේ දෙයක්. Powerpoint presentation එකක් කියන්නේ පුරවපු හිස් පිටු ගොඩක් කියලා හිතුවොත්, Prezi කියන්නේ අපිට විස්තර ඇතුලත් කරන්න පුළුවන් හිතාගන්න බැරි තරම් ලොකු හිස් පිටුවක්. මේ හිස් පිටුවට අපිට පුළුවන් චිත්‍ර, ෆොටෝ, සින්දු, වීඩියෝ, ඇනිමේෂන්, අකුරු වගේ ඕනෙම දෙයක් ඇතුල් කරන්න. ඊට පස්සේ ඒ ඇතුල් කරපු දේවල් වල අපිට අවශ්‍ය ප්‍රමාණයට zoom කරලා photo ගන්න පුළුවන්. සරලව කිව්වොත් ඒ ෆොටෝ ටික එකතු කළාම තමා Prezi presentation එකක් හැදෙන්නේ. ෆොටෝ කියන වචනේ වෙනුවට Prezi ඇතුලෙදි භාවිතා වෙන්නේ View කියන වචනය.

මේ වීඩියෝව බැලුවොත් තේරේවි මම පැහැදිලි කරන්න උත්සහ කරන දේ.

Prezi Views :

කලින් කිව්වා වගේ view එකක් කියන්නේ ලොකු පිටුවේ, එහෙම නැත්තම් Prezi ඇතුලෙදි කියන විදියට canvas එකේ චුටි ෆොටෝ කියලා හිතාගත්තොත් වැඩේ ලේසියි. Prezi ඇතුලේ හැම ෆොටෝ එකටම රාමුවක් තියනවා. අපි ඒ රාමුව Frame කියලා හදුන්වමු.

Prezi ඇතුළේ රාමු ජාති හතරක් තියනවා.

මේවාගෙන් කැමති රාමුවක් තෝරාගෙන ඒක තමන්ට කැමති විදියට පුරවන්න පුළුවන්. එහෙම නැත්තම් කැමති විදියට ලොකු canvas එක පුරවලා ඒ canvas එකේ කැමති විදියට රාමු හදාගන්න පුළුවන්.

තව පොඩි දෙයක් : Invisible Frame හැරුණු කොට අනික් සියලුම Frames presentation එකේදී පෙනෙනවා. Prezi View එකක් (එහෙම නැත්තම් අර ලොකු Canvas එකේ චුටි ෆොටෝ එකක් )හදාගන්න තියන ලේසිම විදිය තමා තමන්ට අවශ්‍ය පරිදි zoom level සකසා ගෙන රූපයේ පෙන්වන විදියට මුලින්ම Edit Path උඩ ක්ලික් කරලා ඊට පස්සේ Add Current View උඩ ක්ලික් කරන එක. එතකොට තමන්ගේ මොනිටරයේ ඒ අවස්ථාවේ තියන Prezi View එක Frame එකක් විදියට path එකට ඇතුල් වෙනවා.

Prezi Path කියන්නේ අපි ගත්ත ෆොටෝ ටික, එහෙම නැත්තම් හදාගත්ත views ටික presentation එකේ පෙන්වන අනු පිළිවෙල.

Prezi Path වෙනස් කිරීම

මේ අනුපිළිවෙල (Figure 1 හි පෙනෙන View ලැයිස්තුව බලන්න) අපිට කැමති විදියට Drag & Drop විදියට හදාගන්න පුළුවන්. එහෙම නැත්තම් Edit Path ක්ලික් කරලා එහෙ මෙහෙ යන ඉරි වලින් පෙන්වලා තියන path එක වෙනස් කරන්න පුළුවන්.

මේ රූපයේ විදියට 1 කියන්නේ පළවෙනි Frame එක. ඒ Frame එක Circle වර්ගයේ Frame එකක්. පළවෙනි Frame එක විදියට වෙන Frame එකක් පාවිච්චි කරන්න අවශ්‍ය නම් කරන්න තියෙන්නේ සුළු දෙයක් : අංක 1 මවුස් එකෙන් ඇදගෙන ගිහින් පළවෙනියට පෙනෙන්න ඕනේ Frame එක ළගින් තියන්න. Prezi ඒ Frame එක පළවෙනිට දාගෙන අනෙක් Frame වල අංක අනුපිළිවෙල වෙනස් කරගනීවි.

දැනට තියන 1 සහ 2 යන frames දෙක මැදට තවත් view එකක් ඇතුළත් කරන්න අවශ්‍ය නම් අංක 1 ළඟ තියන පොඩි + ලකුණ ඇදගෙන ගිහින් අදාළ Frame එක ළඟ තියන්න පුළුවන්.

Prezi වලින් Powerpoint වගේ text animation වගේ දේවල් කරන්න බැහැ. animation අවශ්‍ය නම් ඒවා flash වලින් හදලා .swf විදියට Prezi වලට import කරන්න පුළුවන්. මේ prezi presentation එක බැලුවොත් .swf සහ Prezi එකතු කළාම කරන්න පුළුවන් වැඩ ගැන අදහසක් ගන්න පුළුවන් වේවි.

Prezi Template කියන්නේ අපේ Prezi Presentation එකේ Background එක. අපිට කැමති backgroud එකක් හදාගන්න පුළුවන්. එහෙම නැත්තම් Prezi එකේම තියන Template එකක් පාවිච්චි කරන්න පුළුවන්.

Prezi Theme කියන්නේ අපි Presentation එකේ භාවිතා කරන වර්ණ, අකුරු වර්ගය ආදිය. අපිට කැමති විදියේ theme හදාගන්න පුළුවන්. එහෙම නැත්තම්, තියන එකක්ම පාවිච්චි කරන්න පුළුවන්. වැඩ දන්නා අයට CSS Editor පාවිච්චි කරලා හිතේ හැටියට theme හදාගන්න පුළුවන්.

දැන් ඔබ සරලව Prezi ගැන දන්නවා. තැපෑලෙන් පීනන්න බෑ වගේම තමා බලාගෙන ඉඳලා Prezi ගැන ඉගෙන ගන්න බැහැ. විශේෂයෙන් අපි powerpoint වලට පුරුදු වෙලා නිසා Prezi ඔලුවට යන්න ටිකක් වෙලා යන්න පුළුවන්.

Prezi is a modern presentation tool that can make you re-think about presentations.

Have a look at the video to get an idea.

That is how Prezi can be used for a creative presentation.

How about using a presentation like this when teaching your class about planets?

So, what is Prezi?

I would say that is a very big canvas. You can paint it the way you want. Add pictures, add music and after doing all that create views (similar to slides in PowerPoint) as you wish.

Prezi Basics

Prezi is not a collection of slides, it is a big canvas
Prezi views are a like small photos taken off the big canvas
Prezi is not about moving between slides, it is about zooming - zooming to the right level at the right angle
You can add music, videos and pictures to prezi
If you want to add animated text or cartoons, first create them in Flash, save as .swf and add them to Prezi (Have a look at this presentation for some inspiration)

Templates

You can use a Template that comes with Prezi or create your won. Template acts as the background for your presentation.

Path is the order of the presentation
Path is based on frames, simply when you click next, the presentation will move along the path you have created using frames.
There are four kinds of frames in prezi (Invisible, Bracket,Rectangle, Circle)
Add a frame to the Prezi = Adding a new slide to power point
Trick to master frames: Zoom into the level you like, Click edit path, then click on add current view (from the bottom left of your screen) and drag and drop the newly added frame to the position you want in the frame list.

How do you collect data for your research?

This is the thesis season. Lots of my university friends are in their final year and they have started collecting data for their undergraduate thesis. Being tech savvy people, most of them have taken the digital path to send their questionnaires to the respondents. I have seen several methods they use to collect data.

Methods I have seen this season :

Creating a group conversation in Facebook

What I do not like about the method

Adding those hundred odd friends into one conversation is disturbing. When one person replies, another hundred have to read it. (of course you can leave the conversation if you like)
There is no confidentiality of the answers collected.
If there are 20 questions, people who answer have to find a way to make sure that they are not mixing the answers and the question numbers.
Facebook messages are simply not meant to be used to collect data for your research.

Emailing a questionnaire prepared as a word document

What I do not like about the method

Have to download the document.
Have to check whether I have the Word 2007 or above is installed.
Have to type in the answers and save the document.
Have to upload the document back into an email and send back.
Simply, the process is too long.

Given the reasons why I do not like the above methods, it is a shame if I do not put down the methods you can use to collect data in a more efficient way.

Efficient Method #1 and my favorite : Google Forms

The method that I like the most is Google Forms. If you are wondering how to create a Google Form, this 10 mins tutorial will help you get an idea.

Ok, why Google Forms?

Here are the 5 features that I like the most about Google Forms :

Simple
Ability to share the link in social networks
Ability to embed the form into a web page or an email
Responses are automatically added into a spreadsheet which can be exported into an Excel Sheet or any other format you like
Ability to view responses with charts and graphs

Efficient Method #2: Zoho Forms

Zoho Forms are little bit complex than Google Forms. They almost work as forms in an application. I have used it only a few times and these are my favorite features of Zoho Forms

Ability to upload files with responses
Ability to enable data validation
Easy form creation : you only have to select the feature and drop it to the form, designing is easy.

Efficient Method #3 : Use a service built for collecting data

For example, Survey Monkey offers a nice list of features for collecting data online. As they are meant to be used for the purpose of collecting data, they offer you facilities to easily analyze and create reports.

So, why Word documents? switch into one of the above methods to collect data and you will see that those services reduces your workload in half.

These services:

are simple
reduces the typing and the number of clicks that the respondent have to spend to reply your questionnaire
makes it easy for you to analyse your data

උදාහරණය : අලුතින් උපාධිය ලැබූ සිසුවෙක් සහකාර අලෙවිකරුවෙක් ලෙස රැකියාව ආරම්භ කරනවා. සහකාර අලෙවිකරුවෙක් ලෙස යා හැකි උපරිම දුර ගමන් කරන ඔහු එම රැකියාවේ අවසාන සීමාවට පැමිණෙනවා. සහකාර අලෙවිකරු සීමාවෙන් එපිටට පනින ඔහු ඉන්පසු ඇතුල් වෙනවා අලෙවිකරුගේ සීමාවට.

මේ විදියට අපේ ජීවිතය සහ රැකියාව කියන්නේ එක් සීමාවකින් තවත් සීමාවකට පනින පිම්මක්. එක් සීමාවක අන්තයට පැමිණි පසු නව සීමාවේ අන්තය දක්වා යෑමට නම් අලුත් දේවල් ඉගෙන ගැනීම, බිය නොමැතිව නව අභියෝග වලට මුහුණ දීම වැනි පුරුදු අප තුල ඇති කරගත යුතුයි. එසේ නොමැති නම් පෙර සීමාව කෙතරම් දක්ෂ ලෙස තරණය කලත් නව සීමාවේ අන්තය කරා යෑම අපට තරමක් අපහසු කාර්යයක් වේවි. එවිට එකතරා සීමාවක අපිට ඉබේම නවතින්නට සිදු වෙනවා.

ලොක්කට දැන් වැඩ බැරි වෙන්නෙත් ඔහු එක සීමාවකින් ඉදිරියට යෑමට නොහැකිව සිරවී සිටින නිසා වෙන්නට පුළුවන්. අද ඔහුට හෝ ඇයට වැඩ බැරි වුණත් අතීතයේදී ඔහු හෝ ඇය අති දක්ෂයෙක් වී තිබීමට ඇති ඉඩ කඩ ඉතාමත් වැඩියි.

පසු ලිවීම : ඇමතිලා, මාමලා නිසා ඉහළ යෑමද වැඩ බැරි ලොක්කෙක් වීමට ඇති තවත් එක් පහසු ක්‍රමයකි.

ලොවෙන් එකෙක් එක් දෙයකට වෙයි සමත කියා කියමනක් තිබුණත් එය සැම විටම සත්‍ය වන්නේ නැහැ. අප අතර සිටින සමහරුන් එකිනෙකට වෙනස් දේවල් වලටත් දක්ෂයි. උදාහරණයක් විදියට සමහර ඉංජිනේරුවන් ගීත ගායනයේ දක්ෂයින්, සමහර රියදුරන් චිත්‍ර ඇඳීමේ දක්ෂයින්. තවත් සමහරුන්ගේ වෘත්තීය එක් දෙයක් වුවත් ඔවුන් දක්ෂ තවත් දෙයකට. තවත් අයට පවරන ඕනෙම රාජකාරියක් දක්ෂ ලෙස ඉටු කිරීමේ හැකියාවක් තිබෙනවා.

එක් දෙයකට පමණක් සීමා නොවී විවිධාකාර හැකියාවන් තිබීම සහ ඕනෑම දෙයක් ඉක්මනින් ඉගෙන ගෙන අදාළ කාර්යයේ හොදින් නිරත වීමට ඇති හැකියාව නිසාම සමහරු තමන්ගේ නියම හැකියාව ප්‍රයෝජනට ගන්නේ නැහැ. තවත් සමහරුන් ඕනෙවටත් වඩා වැඩ කරනවා.

උදාහරණයක් ලෙස අපි ගනිමු වෙබ් අඩවි නිර්මාණ කරුවෙක්. ඔහු ආයතනයේ වැඩට බඳවා ගන්නේ වෙබ් අඩවි නිර්මාණය කරන්නට පමණක් වුනත් කාලයක් යද්දී ඔහුගේ දක්ෂතාවය නිසා ආයතනයේ සමාජ ජාල අලෙවි කරුවා ලෙසත් වැඩ කිරීමට පටන් ගනීවි. ඔහු වෙබ් අඩවි නිර්මාණය සහ සමාජ ජාල තුල ආයතනය ප්‍රචලිත කිරීම යන කාර්යයන් දෙකම ඉටු කලත් බොහෝ විට ඔහුට ලැබෙන්නේ වෙබ් අඩවි නිර්මාණකරුගේ පඩිය පමණක් වෙන්නට පුළුවන්. වෙනත් වචන වලින් කියනවා නම් ඔහු "ඕනෙවට වැඩ වැඩ කරන කෙනෙක්" තවත් සමහරුන්ට ඔහු "එක වැඩක්වත් හරියට නොකරන කෙනෙක්" වෙන්නත් පුළුවන්.

මේ සිද්ධිය බොහොම පහසුවෙන් පියවර හතරකින් දක්වන්න පුළුවන්.

වැඩ කරන්න පුළුවන් කෙනා තමන්ට පැවරෙන සියලු කාර්යයන් නිවැරදිව ඉටු කිරීමට වෙහෙසෙනවා. නොදන්නා දේවල් අලුතින් ඉගෙන ගෙන හෝ තම කාර්යය නිමා කිරීම ඔවුන්ගේ සිරිතයි.
මෙය දකින අනෙක් ඇය සිතන්නේ ඔහු/ඇය දක්ෂයෙක් බවයි. දක්ෂයෙක් වීම නිසා ආයතනයේ බොහෝ කටයුතු ඔහු/ඇය ලවා කරවා ගැනීමට ආයතන ප්‍රධානීන් කටයුතු කරනවා.
ටික කලක් ගත වන විට ආයතනයට නැතිවම බැරි පුද්ගලයෙක් බවට ඔහු/ඇය පත් වෙනවා. තම රාජකාරිය සම්බන්ධයෙන් ගැටළුවක් ඇති වුවත් අනෙක් අය බොහෝ විට උපදෙස් පතන්නේ ඔහුගෙන්/ඇයගෙන්.
කාලයක් යද්දී එකිනෙකට වෙනස් ව්‍යාපෘති ගණනාවක ඔහු/ඇය වැඩ කරන්නට පටන් ගනිවී. නමුත් ඔහුගේ සැබෑ දක්ෂතාවය, එහෙම නැත්තම් ඔහුට වඩාත්ම හොඳින් කරන්න පුළුවන් දෙය මේ ව්‍යාපෘති අතර නොතිබෙන්නටත් ඉඩ තිබෙනවා. එවිට දක්ෂයා ඔහුගේ රැකියාව ගැන සතුටු වෙන්නේ නැහැ. ආයතනය ඔහුගෙන් නියම ප්‍රයෝජනය ගන්නේ නැහැ. සරලව කියනවා නම් ආයතනය සහ සේවකයා යන දෙදෙනාම අසතුටින්.

සේවකයා විශාල රාජකාරියක් ආයතනය වෙනුවෙන් ඉටු කලත් ඔහුට රැකියාවේ ඉහළට යන්නට අමාරුයි. ටෙන්ට් එකක් හදද්දී වැඩි උසක්‌ ඇති රිටක් භාවිතා කලොත් අපිට පුළුවන් වඩාත් උස සහ ඉඩ තියෙන ටෙන්ට් එකක් නිර්මාණය කරන්න. එකම උස ඇති මිටි රිටවල් 10 ක් 20 ක් පාවිච්චි කලත් ටෙන්ට් එක තුල ඇති ඉඩ වැඩි වෙන්නේ නැහැ.

අපි ළඟ තියෙන හැකියාවන්ගෙන් අපගේ රැකියාවට සහ අපගේ ජීවිතයට වැඩිම බලපෑමක් කිරීමට හැකිදෙය සොයාගෙන ඒ ඔස්සේ ඉදිරියට යෑම තුලින් ඉක්මනින් රැකියාවේ ඉහළට යාමට අපට හැකියාව තිබෙනවා. උස රිටක් භාවිතා කරලා වඩාත් ඉඩ කඩ තියන ටෙන්ට් එකක් හදාගන්නවා වගේ, අපිට හොඳින්ම, ආසාවෙන්ම සහ ආයතනයට වඩාත්ම වැදගත් දෙය කිරීම තුලින් ඉක්මනින් ඉදිරියට යන්න අපිට පුළුවන්.

අපගේ පහසුව සඳහා අපි ඒ දෙය හඳුන්වමු අපගේ "ප්‍රබලම දායකත්ව ලක්ෂ්‍යය" [highest point of contribution]ලෙස. අපගේ ප්‍රබලම දායකත්වය රාජකාරියට ලබා දීමෙන් රැකියාව සහ ආයතනය තුලින් ඉතා පහසුවෙන් ඉදිරියට යෑමට හැකි වෙනවා වගේම සේවකයෙක් වශයෙන් සතුටට පත්වීමටත් අපිට පුළුවන්.

ඉතින් කොහොමද අපේ ප්‍රබලම දායකත්ව ලක්ෂ්‍යය සොයා ගන්නේ?

වෙන් රූප සටහනකින් මෙය ඉතා සරලව පෙන්වන්නට පුළුවන්. අපගේ දක්ෂතාවය,ආශාව සහ වෙළඳපොල ඉල්ලුම යන සාධක තුන අතර යම්කිසි පොදු දෙයක් තිබේ නම් එය අපගේ ප්‍රබලම දායකත්ව ලක්ෂ්‍යයයි. ඒ ඔස්සේ ඉදිරියට යෑම තුලින් ඉතා පහසුවෙන් සාර්ථකත්වය කරා ලඟා වෙන්නට අපට පුලුවන්.

ප්‍රබලම දායකත්ව ලක්ෂ්‍යය ඔස්සේ ඉදිරියට යෑම තුලින් අපගේ දක්ෂතා සහ හැකියාවන් සීමිත වෙන බව කෙනෙකුට සිතෙන්නට පුළුවන්. නමුත් මා සිතන්නේ මේ ගැන දැනගෙන සිටීම තුලින් අප අතින් වෙන විශාල වැරදි ප්‍රමාණයක් සහ සිත රිදවීම් ප්‍රමාණයක් අඩු කරගන්න හැකි බවයි.

උදාහරණක් ලෙස ආයතනයක විශාල වැඩ රාජකාරියක් ඉටු කලත් උසස් වීමක් හෝ පඩි වැඩිවීමක් නොමැතිව පසු තැවෙන සේවකයෙක් ගැන සිතමු. ඔහු මේ සංකල්පය ගැන දන සිටියා නම් ඔහු පසු තැවෙන්නේ නැහැ. එවිට ඔහු දන්නවා වැඩ වැඩියෙන් කිරීමට වඩා ප්‍රබලම දායකත්ව ලක්ෂ්‍යය ඔස්සේ ඉදිරියට යෑම වඩාත් ප්‍රථිපල දායක බව. ඒ නිසා අලුත් රාජකාරියක් බාරගන්නා විට ඔහුට පුළුවන් එහි ප්‍රථිපල කලින්ම දැනගන්න.

රාජකාරිය ඔහුගේ ප්‍රබලම දායකත්ව ලක්ෂ්‍යය හරහා යනවා නම් පඩි වැඩි වීම්, උසස් වීම් ලැබෙන්නට පුළුවන්. රාජකාරිය ප්‍රබලම දායකත්ව ලක්ෂ්‍යය හරහා නොයන්නේ නම් ඔහු දන්න්නවා පඩි වැඩි වීම් ආදිය බලාපොරොත්තු විය නොහැකි බව. අවසානයේ සත්‍යය අවබෝධය කරගත් සේවකයෙක් බිහිවීම තුලින් සිත් රිදවීම්, පසු තැවීම් අඩු වෙන්න පුළුවන්.

ඔබගේ ප්‍රබලම දායකත්ව ලක්ෂ්‍යය ගැන සිතීමට දැන් කාලයයි. ඒ ගැන නොසිතීම ඔබගේ රැකියාව සම්බන්ධයෙන් ඔබ කර ඇති ලොකුම වරද විය හැකියි.

Thought Leader is a person or a business that process innovative ideas and LinkedIn is the Facebook for professionals.

Recently, LinkedIn has given us the opportunity to follow great Thought Leaders within the network. For example, if we follow Barack Obama on LinkedIn, we will be able to read his updates right in our LinkedIn home page. LinkedIn currently has a long list of thought leaders and while going through the list, I wondered how to become a thought leader within the network.

Technical Writing Unveiled - part 2

This is a second post in a series of posts about Technical Writing and I guess it would be better if you read the episode number one first.

Continuing from the set of questions I asked you in the last post, here comes the next set of questions.

Are you confident about your English?

Technical Writing is not confined to the medium of English. However, most of the technical writing jobs require you to have a good knowledge of English. This does not mean that you should have a degree in English to be a Technical Writer. If you know the basic rules, that is enough.

Although Technical Writer is a person who uses simple language to communicate, he/she might have to help the marketing department to write brochures during free time. This means that every Technical Writer should have that creativity within him/her. If not, it will be hard to survive in the field and you will have to ask another person to format the text you have just generated. If your job description says that you only have to write the text, you will not have to color up your work. Nevertheless,it is good to be an all rounder.

Talking about confidence, being over-confident is not so good. Before submitting the final documentation you have done, a good technical writer makes it a point to get a peer review done by a colleague. At that stage, your colleague might show your mistakes and might ask you to change sentences or even a topic itself. Ability to take criticism in a constructive manner is therefore a must for a Technical Writer.

Have you ever created a video?

Technical Writing, in another words, is to present technical information in a non-technical way. Videos are one of the easiest ways to achieve that. Most of the users these days like to watch a video than reading a help text. So, it is important that you know the basics in video editing. Even if you do not know how to make videos, you should have at least watched some video tutorials. Then you know the difference between an effective video tutorial and a useless one. When you work on a tutorial yourself, your previous experience with videos will definitely be an advantage.

Have you enabled the new search on Google?

If you have done this, it means you are brave enough to test a new development and love to take a risk. It also implies that you are very quick to adapt into new technologies. As a Technical Writer, you will be presented with fresh software, just out of the factory. If you are afraid to embrace new technologies, test new software products and not brave enough find your way through a new application, you will not enjoy being a Technical Writer.

A part of your job is to test new software, find out how the users can make use of it and write how-to-guides. Thus, being a Technical Writer means that you will have to figure out a software/system by your self. If you have solved your IT problems by yourself and if you are open to use new technologies, Technical Writing is the job for you.

This is optional, but have you ever worked as a teacher?

Teaching is similar to Technical Writing. A teacher learns subject matter first and present it to his/her students in a simple manner. Thus, being a teacher is an extra advantage for a Technical Writer. If you have ever worked as a teacher, you'd have probably tested numerous teaching methods and have tried to present the lesson in the simplest and the most memorable way. Technical Writing, as I believe, is just Teaching, but in a different way.

Do you like working with computers all the time?

This is the most important question. You will have to live with a computer all the day and if you love it, you'll enjoy the job. Messing around with a computer means not looking at the Facebook ticker all the time or watching movies 24/7. If you are a person who loves to check out how Facebook works rather than watching the ticker, you are qualified to become a technical writer.

If you have a degree or diploma to say that you are officially a genius, that will be valued a lot but it does not mean that you must have paper qualifications in IT to become a Technical Writer in an IT environment.

Thus ends the ten questions to make sure whether you will fit into the role of a technical writer :)

Technical Writing Unveiled - part 1

While I was about to complete one year at the university as an English Instructor, an IT company came to me with an offer for a new job as a Technical Writer. I did not apply for the opportunity, therefore, I had no idea what Technical Writing is and what they expect from me. So the first thing I did was to consult Sadeepa, the elder brother of one of my batch mates. I remembered him having a Technical Writer as the headline in LinkedIn. Then I did a search for Technical Writers in LinkedIn and tried to get in touch with them to know what the job is really like. Meanwhile, I found some interesting blogs and news articles about the job.

On the first day of the job, I felt nervous because I did not know what to do and I was not sure what sort of language should be used in writing tech stuff. When my friends asked what my new job was, I always said documentation or language consultancy because half of them did not know what technical writing is. If I tell them that I'm a Technical Writer, the next question would be "What do you really do?"

Having worked for two months as a Technical Writer, I think it is high time to unveil this mystery job.

According to Wikipedia, Technical Writing involves the creation of useful documents that can be clearly understood by readers. Good technical writing clarifies jargon, presenting useful information that is clear and easy to understand for the intended audience; poor technical writing may increase confusion by creating or failing to explain unnecessary jargon.

Technical writing is used in many fields. As I'm working in an IT related environment, please note that the information given would be related to Technical Writing in IT field.

Let us begin by the skills you need and find out who has the potential to be a good technical writer?

Think about the following questions. If your answer is "yes" to at least a few of them, you have a possibility to become a Technical Writer.

Have you read user manuals?

As a Technical Writer, you will have to write User Manuals for End Users. This does not mean that writing User Manuals is the only thing that Technical Writers do. However, writing a User Manual is a taxing task that every Technical Writer has to undergo at least once in his/her life time. You will have to think about all the Use Cases and also should make sure that your writing is clear and concise so that any person can understand it. If you have read plenty of User Manuals before, it will be easier for you to understand the style of writing you should use for writing a User Manual. You will know how to organize your topics, where to insert images and when to include special tips. Above all, you will know how not to write a User Manual.

Have you used online help forums to solve your problems?

Online help forums gather several kinds of users. For example, let us take a community where the End Users post their problems about a particular software. Some want to show that they are experts and provides the answer required in a tech manner but none understands them. Another one might right a long answer with all the necessary details making it possible for everyone to follow his steps.

The second person would get more number of thumbs up or likes because the answer he gave was more useful for the community.

If the community was composed of more tech-oriented people, the first answer would get more likes. why? for them, you do not need to provide step by step instructions. If you just say, "Flash your phone", they would do it.

The bottom line is, if you continuously read/take part online forums, you can understand the subtle art of giving comprehensive information. You will know how you should change the level of detailing according to the audience you are writing for and further, you will know what type of instructions are easy to read, attract the user and get more likes and thumbs ups.

Have you helped your friends to solve their IT related problems?

Helping your friends to solve their IT issues is the best way to know how a layman's or in other words, an End User's mind works.

You might help your friend to uninstall a software in Windows 7 platform today and by tomorrow, he/she might forget how to go to the Control Panel. So, you might have to repeat the instructions without getting angry.

When writing instructions for the End Users, we should keep these humane factors in mind. When you write Technical Documentation, you hardly meet the people who read your work. But it is important that you address their exact need in the most effective manner. Helping your friends to solve IT related issues is the best way to understand the best tactics to be used in writing instructions.

Besides understanding human mind, this will also give you a chance to read user manuals and take part in online forums ;)

Have you ever tried to write instructions to do something?

Writing instructions is a challenge because you have to think about all the options available and what mistakes the user is prone to do.

Above all, to write a better guide, you must have completed/done the task about which you are writing. Then you will know the easiest way to complete the task and if there are several methods to complete the task you can write them all to give the user a chance to choose the method that suits him/her the best.

So, having written instructions to do something (Ex: it can be either making ice cream [Sinhala], cleaning your system after a virus attack [English] or how to enable Facebook Login approvals [Sinhala] ) is very useful when it comes to the profession of technical writing. To tell the truth, 80% of your work as a technical writer might involve in giving instructions to an unknown person.

Do you enjoy writing?

As the name itself suggests, this job involves writing, a lot of writing. If you love writing, the next step is easy. You only have to practice writing simple and short sentences.It should not be the language that you use in literature reviews. The secret to identify the right language style for technical writing is to read more and more user guides and use them. Once you are familiar with the style, try writing some instructions and ask your friends to review it. The main difference between Technical Writing and Writing is the style.

Writers have their own style but Technical Writers do not. They write short and simple language like anyone can unless the project require them to use a heavy language. The interesting thing is that they aslo differ from the normal set of people who write simple language. Technical writers know how to give instructions to a fifth grader to launch a nuke and most of the none-technical-writers find it hard to do.

ඩෙනිම , ටී ෂර්ට් එක සහ රබර් සෙරෙප්පු කුට්ටමට නිවාඩු ලැබිණි.

දැන් ජාතික ඇඳුම සාරිය යැ.

වෙනදා නම් 8 ට ආරම්භ වෙන දේශනයට යාම සඳහා මා අවදි වෙන්නේ 7.15 පමණය. මුණ කට සෝදා තියන දෙයක් ගිල දමා ඩෙනිමක් ඇඳගෙන අහුවෙන ටී ෂර්ට් එකක් ඊට උඩින් දමාගෙන ගෙදරින් පිට වෙන්නේ 7.45 ටය. ෆුට් බෝඩ් එකේ හෝ එල්ලී ගොස් ගලහා හන්දියෙන් බැස ඉතිරි ටික වල ගොඩැලි සහිත ෂෝට් කට් වලින් දමා කෙසේ හෝ 8.15 පමණ දේශන ශාලාවට සැපත් වෙමි. දැන් 7.15 වෙනතුරු නිදා ගැනීමට නොහැකිය.

සාරිය වූ කලී ජරා ඇඳුමකි. මා වැනි බිළින්දන්ගේ නිදාගන්නා කාලයට හෙනහුරා ගැසූ භුතයෙකි. විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයට යා යුත්තේ 8 වුවත් දැන් 5.30 අවදි විය යුතුය. අඩුම ගානේ 6 ට වත් සාරි ඇඳීමේ ව්‍යාපෘතිය දියත් කළ යුතුය.

සාරිය නමා පොටවල් සෑදිය යුතුය. අතේ පොට යන තුරු නැමුවත් ඒ පොටවල් කෙලින් හිටින්නේ නැත. බැරිම තැන කටු සීයක් විතර ගසා පොටවල් ටික සාදා ගෙන ඉස්තිරික්කය රත් කොට දෙන්නම් වැඩක් කියා සාරිය උඩින් තැබුවෙමි. සාරියක් පිච්චීමට ගතවන්නේ තත්පර කීයක්ද යන ගැටලුවට නිවැරදි පිළිතුර මා සොයා ගත්තේ එදාය. සාරිය විතරක් ඉස්තිරික්ක ගත කළාට වැඩක් නැත. හැට්ටයද, සායද ඉස්තිරික්ක කළ යුතුය. මේ විකාර ගැන කියන්නට ඇත්තේ මළ සමයන් සාරි ඇඳන් යනවා කියාය. සරසවි සිසුවියෙක්ව සිටි කාලයේ ජීවිතේට ඇඳුමක් මැද්දේ නැති මට මේවා මැජික් යැ. ඩෙනිමට මල් තියා වදින්නට සිතෙන්නේ දැන්ය.

පොටවල් සාදා ගත් පසු ආරම්භ වන්නේ යුද්ධයේ දෙවැනි කොටසය, එනම් මානුෂික මෙහෙයුමය. එයට මානුෂික මෙහෙයුම යැයි කියන්නේ යුද්ධයේ ඉතිරි කොටස සඳහා මනුස්සයන් කිහිප දෙනෙක් අවශ්‍ය නිසාය.

කාපුවා උගුරෙන් ඉහළට එන තරමට තද කළ පටියක් ඉණ වටේ බැඳේ. ඒ පටියේ සාරිය පැටලේ. සාරිය කකුලේ පැටලේ. මම වැටේ. සාරිය කැඩේ. පළවෙනි දිනයේ දින චරියාව මෙසේ වූ හෙයින් තත්වය analyse කර බැලුවෙමි. දැන් ඉණ වටා කටු ගසමි. කටු ඇනී ඇනී දවසම ගත කරමි. ඩෙනිමක් නම් කඩෙන් ගත හැකිය. ඕනෑ සරීරයකට ගැලපෙන ඕනෑ සයිස් ඩෙනිමක්, ටී ෂර්ට් එකක් කඩෙන් සොයා ගත හැක. නමුත් මා සිතා සිටියේ සාරී ඔක්කොම එක සයිස් කියාය. ඒ නිසා දුටු සැනින් හිත ගිය සාරියක් මිලදී ගත්තෙමි. දහ දුක් විඳ හැට්ටයත් මහා ගත්තෙමි. එක්තරා දිනක උදේ පාන්දර ඒ සාරිය ඇඳීමට පටන් ගත්තෙමි. කාලා හමාරය, සාරිය කොටය. ඒ අස්සේ සාරිය මැදින් නූල් ගැලවිලාය. මම උස නිසා උසට ගැලපෙන සාරි තෝරා ගත යුතු බව එදා අපේ නැන්දා කීවාය. මලා යැ. මීට පස්සේ සාරී ගන්න විට උස බැලිය යුතුය. කඩේ එක කොණක සිට අනික් කොන දක්වා සාරිය එළා එහි නූල් ගැලවී ඇත්දැයි බැලිය යුතුය. twitter භාෂාවෙන් කියනවා නම් #NoteToSelf යැ.

සාරි හැට්ට මසා ගැනීමද සංසාරේ එපා වෙන වැඩකි. මිනුම් දිය යුතුය, සල්ලිත් දිය යුතුය. නමුත් මේ වන තුරු මගේ හිතට අල්ලන එක හැට්ටයක් වත් මසා ගැනීමට නොහැකි විය. ඒ නිසා සැමටම රැකවරණය දෙන කඩේ හැට්ටයක් ගත්තෙමි. වැඩේ ලෙසිය, රේඩි මේඩ් යැ. නමුත් එය ලිස්සා වැටේ. සාරියේ පොට අල්ලා හැට්ට කට්ටක් ගැසූ විට හැට්ටය අත දිගේ රූරා වැටේ. ඇඩෙනවා යැ. කඳුළු එනවාය.

එක තැනකට කට්ටක් ගසා අනිත් තැන හදන විට තවත් තැනකින් රැළි ඇද වේ. රැළි ටික එක ගානට හදන විට පොට දිග මදිය, එසේ නැත්නම් දිග වැඩිය. කට්ටක් ගැසීමට අමාරුවෙන් පොටවල් ටික අල්ලා ගත් නමුත් කට්ට ගැසූ විට සාරිය රැළි ගැසී ඇකිලී යයි. එවිට මතක් වෙන්නේ සාරිය සොයාගත් කෙනාගේ මාමා ය.

සාරිය වූ කලී ජරා ඇඳුමකි. කාලය නිකරුණේ වැය කරවන වදකාරී ඇඳුමකි.

කෙසේ හෝ රෙද්ද පටලවා ගෙන ගෙදරින් එළියට බැසීමට සුදානම් වෙද්දී දෙවියන් සිහිවෙන්නේ සාරිය පෑගීම නිසා වැටීමට යෑම නිසාය. සාරි පොට කරට දමා ගත යුතුය. එක අතකින් බස් එකට සල්ලි ගත යුතුය, අනිත් අතින් සාරිය ඔසවා ගත යුතුය. පොඩ්ඩක් උස අඩියක් ඇති සෙරෙප්පු දෙකක් දැමිය යුතුය. නැතහොත් දවස අවසානයේ සාරිය ඌරු කොටුවක දොර රෙද්දක් සේ දිස්වනු නියතය. අමතක වුණාය, කෑම, බීම, පොත්, පැන්සල් සහිත බෑගයද කරට දාගත යුතුය. මේ බෑගයද එක කරකට පමණක් බර දැනෙන hand bag යන ජාතියේ එකක් නිසා කරත් රිදෙන්නේය. කරන්නට දෙයක් නැත, කුම්බලා කෑවා නම් විදවපිය බළලෝ ලු යැ . ඔය අස්සේ වැස්සා නම් ලොවෙත් නැත ලොවි ගහෙත් නැත මේ ලෝකෙත් නැත. බසයට නැගීම මී ළඟ යුද්ධය යැ. එක අතකින් සාරියය, අනිත් අතේ බසයට සල්ලිය, එසේ නැත්තම් කුඩය යැ. බස් එකට නගින විට අල්ලා ගැනීමට දැන් අතක් නැත. පිරිමි වාසනාවන්තය කියා සිතෙන්නේ මේ වෙලාවටය. බසයට නැගගත්තත් උඩ පොල්ලේ එල්ලී යෑමට හැකියාවක් නැත. සාරියක් හෝ ඔසරියක් ඇඳ බස් එකේ මැද පොල්ලේ එල්ලී වැඩට යන කාන්තා පාර්ශවය මේ ගැන දන්නවා ඇතැයි සිතමි. බස් එකේ යෑම සේම බැසීමද බයානකය. වෙලාවකට මම බස් එකෙන් පිටය, සාරි පොට බස් එක ඇතුළේය. වෙලාවකට පොට එළියේය, මම ඇතුළේය. එක දවසක් මම එළියේය, සාරි පොට බස් එකේ දොරේය, කොන්දොස්තර සාරි පොට උඩය. දුෂ්කර ක්‍රියා කර බසයෙන් පොළවට මාරු වී සාරිය දෙස බැලූ විට බොහෝ දිනවල තරු පෙනෙන්නේය.

සාරි පොට ගෙදරින් එන විට තිබු තැන නැත.

සාරියේ යට හරියේ සපත්තු පොලිෂ් පහරවල්ය.

සාරියේ රැළි ටික පිලිවලකට නැත.

බස් එකෙන් බැස ගත්තද වෙනදා සේ දැන් මීටර් සීය දිවීමට නොහැකිය. අඩි උස සෙරෙප්පු මළ වදයක් යැ.ගල් වල පැටලේ, වලවල් වල වැටේ, පැය කිහිපයක් ඒවා දාගෙන සිටින විට කොන්දත් රිදෙන්නේය. දුකට හේතුව සාරියය. දුක නැති කරන මාර්ගය වැටී තිබෙන්නේ ඩෙනිම් මාවත හරහා ටී ෂර්ට් දක්වාය. නමුත් එය මේ දිනවල වසා ඇති පාරක් ය.

ඩෙනිම් මාවතේ යනවිට කරාඹු, මුදු, මාල කිසිවක් අවශ්‍ය නැත. කැමති නම් කොණ්ඩය නොපීරා වුවද ගෙයින් පිට යා හැකිය. නමුත් සාරියක්/ ඔසරියක් අඳින්නේ නම් කරාඹු දැමිය යුතුය, මාලයක් දැමිය යුතුය, පිළිවෙලකට කොණ්ඩය පීරිය යුතුය. රත්තරන් වලට ඇති අකමැත්ත නිසා සාරියට ගැලපෙන පාට වලින් මාල , වළලු සෙවීමද කළ යුතුය. ඒවාද අස්ප ගණන්ය. වෙනත් වචනයකින් කියනවා නම් සාරිය මහම මහා වදයකි.

ඔය මොනවා කිව්වත් සාරිය/ ඔසරිය අපේ රටේ වැඩ කරන කාන්තාවගේ ජාතික ඇඳුමය. එය සංවර ඇඳුමකි, හොඳ තැනකට යනවිට ඇඳගෙන යා යුතු ඇඳුමකි. පිටත් පේනවා නම්, බඩත් පේනවා නම්, කොන්දත් පේනවා නම්, කරත් පේනවා නම් සාරිය/ ඔසරිය සංවර ඇඳුමක් වන්නේ කෙසේද යන්න කවුරුවත් කතා නොකරන මාතෘකාවකි. හිරට ඩෙනිමක් අඳින විට කෑ ගසන තාත්තලා, ඔවුන්ගේ දුවලා සාරියක්/ ඔසරියක් අඳින විට කවදා වත් බනින්නේ නැත. ඒ ලංකාවේ හැටිය. ඕවා ගැන දුක් වී වැඩක් නැත.

She had gone to the same school

Today I delivered a lecture to the inmates of a rehabilitation center. Most of the inmates there were either raped or sexually abused. During the question time, one of the girls asked about the schools that I have attended. When I told them about the schools, the girl who posed the question smiled, pointed towards her friend and said "මෙයා ගිහින් තියෙන්නෙත් ඒ ඉස්කෝලෙට" [she had gone to the same school]. The smile and the eyes said, "you see, you are correct. Deeps is educated in the same school as yours"

I turned my head a little to see a sight that I would never forget. I frankly do not remember her name, but I remember her face. She had been in the same school with me, probably in the same class because the face was so familiar.

The moment was shocking for me due to two reasons.

We have started our lives in the same place but today we are so different.
I was delivering a lecture to a classmate of mine. My presence there was meant to be an inspiration, help or a guidance for the girls to overcome their problems. Instead, I probably would have created a fire inside my classmate-inmate :(

I did not want to talk to her because I thought it would make her sad. I did not want to make her feel small in front of me, therefore, I pretended that I did not recognize her. But in hearts, we both knew that we were once class mates.

I still do not know her story and I will never try to find it out. This blog post is just to immortalize a shocking moment of my entire life.

Rape, sexual abuse, violence are too common to talk about. But the girls who go through such experience are most of the times silent and we never know what do they have hidden inside.

The behavior and the attitude of the most of the girls reminded me of my life after the O/L exam. I have done the exam and was waiting till the A/L classes start. That was a time I enjoyed doing a little bit of everything.

These girls are also doing a little bit of everything : cooking, making cards, learning life skills etc. But the difference between my O/L time and their life is that they do not have a hope to cling on to. They do not have an A/L class to wait for. Some girls are already rejected from their families and some are afraid to go back to the society. The memories of the violence they experienced come back even with a very small stimuli. It truly is a hard life.

Ok, I will never say bad about my relations. I should be happy to have them around even if they are annoying! Well that is a #NoteToSelf

I have one wish to make before I sleep today : may all the people in this world respect each other!

That will reduce the number of classmates who meet at rehabilitation centers as inmates and guest lecturers.

මෙම බිම් ගෙය අඩි 243 කින් යුතු බිම් ගෙයක්. අප ඇතුල් වූ බිම් ගෙයි කට ආරුක්කු හැඩයක් ගත්තත් අපි පිට වුණේ හතරැස් හැඩයක් ඇති බිම් ගෙයකින්. ගමන පුරාවට මා දුටු හතරැස් හැඩයක් ඇති එකම බිම් ගෙය මෙයයි.

අංක 8 - පිටවීම

අංක අට බිම් ගෙයින් පසු අප පසු කළේ දෙබුක්කාවක් මැදින් වැටී තිබුණු රේල් පාර. කොළ පැහැයෙන් පිරුණු එම ප්‍රදේශය සිතටත් ගතටත් ගෙන දුන්නේ විවේක සුවයක්.

මෙම ප්‍රදේශය පසු කිරීමෙන් අනතුරුව අපට හමු වුණේ ඉතාම සුන්දර ප්‍රදේශයක්. වචනවලට වඩා පින්තූර බලවත් නිසා පින්තූර කිහිපයක් ඉදිරිපත් කරන්නම්.

මේ දුම්රිය අප පසු කරගෙන යනතුරු මා සිටියේ කළුගලට හේත්තු වීගෙනයි. දුම්රිය අප පසු වී ගිය පසු මගේ ටී ෂර්ට් එක පුරා මගියෙකුගේ කෙළ විසිරී තිබුණා. කවුරු හෝ වුමනාවෙන්ම කෙළ ගසන්නට ඇති, නො එසේ නම් පිටත නොබලා මගියෙකු ගැසූ කෙළ පහරක් මගේ ටී ෂර්ට් එක මතට පතිත වන්නට ඇති. කෙසේ වෙතත් ඒ සිද්ධියට අදාළ කරුණු දෙකක් ඔබ සමඟ බෙදා ගන්නට සිතුණා.

කිසිම වාහනයක යද්දී පිටතට කෙළ ගැසීම නොකරන්න. වාහනයේ වේගය සහ සුළං නිසා වාහනයෙන් දුර සිටින කෙනෙකුගේ ඇඟේ ඔබේ කෙළ පහර පතිත විය හැකියි. නො එසේ නම් වාහනයේ පසු පස වීදුරුවක්‌ අසල සිටින කෙනෙක්ට ඔබගේ කෙළ පහර වදයක් විය හැකියි.

මෙවන් ගමනයක් යන විට අමතර ටී ෂර්ට් එකක් වැනි දෙයක් රැගෙන යන්න.

මෙතැන පසු කර විනාඩි පහක පමණ ගමනකින් පසුව සිග්නල් කණු අපිට ආචාර කළා. රේල් පාර දෙකට බෙදී වෙන් වුණේ අපටත් එකිනෙකාගෙන් වෙන් වන්නට කාලය හරි බව සංකේතවත් කරමින්.

දවසේ චාරිකාව නිමා කරමින් ප.ව. 4.00 ට පමණ අපි ඉහළ කෝට්ටේ දුම්රිය ස්ථානයට ළඟා වුණා.

කඩුගන්නාවේ සිට ඉහළ කෝට්ටේ දක්වා දුර කිලෝමීටර 9.04 ක් පමණ. කඩුගන්නාවට සාපේක්ෂව ඉහළ කෝට්ටේ අඩි 600 පමණ පහළින් පිහිටා තිබෙන දුම්රිය ස්ථානයක්.

දවසක් තිස්සේ කඩුගන්නාව සිට ඉහළ කෝට්ටේ දක්වා රේල් පාර දිගේ ඇවිදපු ඒ ගමන අමතක නොවන මතකයන් රැසක් අපගේ හදවත් තුළ තැන්පත් කළ අපූරු චාරිකාවක්......... සයිබරයේ ඇති කරගත් මිතු දම් වැඩි දියුණු කරගැනීමට ලැබුණු අගනා අවස්ථාවක්.....දවසේ මතක සටහන් ගැන අප කතා කරමින් සිටියා. එක් වරම අපේ කට හඬවල් අබිභවා දුම්රියක් කතා කළා.

දුම්රිය ගණනාවක් අපව පසු කරගෙන යන ආකාරය කැමරා වල සටහන් වුනත් මේ දුම්රිය අපේ කණ්ඩායම පසු කරගෙන යන ආකාරය කාගේවත් කැමරාවක සටහන් වුණේ නැහැ. කොළඹ යන පිරිස සමඟ මාත් මේ දුම්රියට ගොඩවී රඹුක්කන දක්වා පැමිණියා. රඹුක්කනින් නැවත මහනුවර දුම්රියක නැගී මා නිවස බලා පැමිණෙන විට බිම් කළුවර වැටී පැය කිහිපයක් ගතවී ගොසින්. ගතට වෙහෙසක් දැනුනත් හිත පිරුණු තවත් එක් දවසක් නිමා වුණේ ඒ විදියට.

කඩුගන්නාව සිට ඉහල කෝට්ටේ දක්වා පයින් ගිය ගමනේ කොටස් දෙකක් පසුගිය දිනවල පළවුනා. ගමනට සුදානම් වීම සහ කඩුගන්නාවේ සිට සිංහ කට දක්වා ගමන ගැන ඔබ කියවන්නට ඇති. සිංහ කටේ සිට ඉදිරියට ගමන ගැනයි අද ලිපිය.

සිංහ කටට ඒ නම වැටී ඇත්තේ ඈත සිට බලනවිට සිංහ කටක් ලෙස එම ගල දෙබුක්කාව දර්ශනය වීමයි. සිංහ කටෙන් මදක් ඉදිරියට ගිය විට අපට හමුවෙනවා අංක 10 දරන අඩි 56 ක දිගකින් යුතු බිම් ගෙය. මෙයට යොදා ඇති අන්වර්ථ නාමය අලි පස්ස නොහොත් elephant back යන්නයි. අලියෙකුගේ පසුපස කකුලක් ආකාරය බෑවුම දෙසට ඇති බිම් ගෙයි බිත්තිය දර්ශනය වීම එලෙස අන්වර්ථ නාමයක් ලැබීමට හේතුවයි.

Facebook has finally introduced the subscribe button. For me, it is a copy of G+ circles. The theory of the G+ circles is that anyone one could add you to their circles but you do not have to add them back. Until you add a person to your circle, they will only see your public updates in their newsfeed. Facebook subscribe button works on the same principle.

What is the good side?

You can give your fans a chance to engage with your personal Facebook profile.

Prevents you from going through the hassle of maintaining a page for your fans.

You can have the people you trust in the friend list and let all those friends who can only see a limited version of your profile be your subscribes.

Would be a great tool to remove the clutter in your friend list. (no need to add all these people you meet at the hospital queue as friends)

If used correctly, it can be used as a tool to market yourself.

What is the bad side?

The status that we share can be totally harmless. But sometimes, crazy friends make the post go wild with crazy comments and you no longer can keep your mouth shut. So you also join the fun.This sometimes ends up with personal jokes, and might go to the extent of using bad language. All these personal jokes and your language will be tolerated by your friends and there will be no misunderstandings. But for an outsider, the comments may look obscene. In another words, comments can create a black mark on your personality.

This makes us share more information to the public. We should be careful not to breech the privacy of ourselves and of our friends.

One thing is obvious: people make their status public because they want engagement from the public. But it does not mean that people want to add all their subscribers as friends. (Well, there can be people who "want" to do so too) If they wanted to do so, people will make their whole profile public. Unless the person you subscribe has a full public profile, please do not add them as friends.

Some might use this feature to advertise their blogs/forums etc as the subscribers can comment on the posts that are made public.

Why I'm happy?

I no longer have to add all the unknown people to one friend list and restrict that particular friend list from seeing my very personal stuff on Facebook.

I do not add people that I do not know to Facebook. However, I get many friend requests each day. One day, I messaged few of these unknown people who have added me as a friend. These are some of their answers.

රේල් පාර දිගේ පළවෙනි කොටස හැමෝම කියවන්න ඇති කියලා හිතනවා. අපේ ගමනේ දෙවැනි කොටස ගැන එහෙම නැත්තම් කඩුගන්නාව සිට සිංහ කට දක්වා ගමන ගැන කියන්න තමා මේ ලිපිය වෙන් වෙන්නේ.

කොළඹින් උදේ 5.55 ට පිටත් වෙන පොඩි මැණිකේ එදා කඩුගන්නාවට එනකොට 9.00 විතර වෙන්න ඇති. කොළඹින් ආපු කට්ටියට බඩගිනියි කියලා කඩුගන්නාව නගරයේ අවන්හලකට ගියා ගියාමයි පැයකට විතර එලියට ආවේ නැහැ. ඒ අතරේ දිස්නේ දිදී පායලා තිබ්බ සූර්ය දිවිය රාජයා වලාකුළු අතරේ හැංගිලා අඩන්න ගත්තේ අපේ කට්ටියත් අඩවමින්.

මේ බිම් ගෙයින් පිටවෙලා අපි වැස්සේම ගමන් ආරම්භ කරනවා.

වැස්සේම ඉදිරියට

වැස්සේ රේල් පාරේ ගමන් කරන එක නම් අනතුරුදායක දෙයක්. ලිස්සන්න පුළුවන්. ඒ වගේම කූඩැල්ලන්ගෙන් දැඩි ප්‍රහාර එල්ල වෙනවා. ඒක නිසා සපත්තු සහ මේස් අනිවාර්යෙන් පළදින්න. සපත්තු පළදින්න කලින් අත් කකුල් වල සබන් ගාගෙන යන්න පුළුවන් නම් තවත් හොඳයි.

ඒ වගේම ඇවිදිනකොට වැස්ස වෙලාවට නම් සිල්පර උඩ ඇවිදින එක ආරක්ෂිතයි. බිමින් ඇවිද්දොත් අර ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් ගෙන් බේරෙන්න බැහැ. හැබැයි රේල් පාර මැදින් නම් ඇවිදින්න එපා. එකිනෙකා පිටි පස්සේ රේල් පාරේ සිල්පර කොටන් අයිනෙන් අඩිය තියමින් ඇවිදින්න. මේ වෙනකොට මීදුම නිසා ඉදිරියට අඩි 50 ක්‌ වත් අපිට පෙනුනේ නැහැ. ඉස්සරහින් කෝච්චියක් ආවොත් පෙනෙන්නේ ළඟටම ආවට පස්සේ.

මීදුම කපාගෙන ඉදිරියට ඇදෙන අපේ කණ්ඩායමට මීළඟට දකින්න ලැබෙන්නේ සිංහ කට.
