WE have had an interesting summer in that we have had Coach Bergman in and out of surgery (old man), new coaching staff and new faces to the Charger family. Despite the changes and the over forty head coach, the expectations and signs of promise are still there. The summer started with the varsity participating in the Mahomet league. They went 8-0 beating PBL, STM, Champaign Central, St. Joe, Mahomet, Urbana, Unity and Blue Ridge. Making the final four, the Chargers took match one in the season ending evening tournament beating St. Joe, then in the final they had to face the cross town rival Central who beat Mahomet earlier. Centennial fell in 3 sets to the Maroons finishing in 2nd place.

The Chargers freshmen team had some early on experienced competition that put them in the first Parkland VARSITY tournament. The youth of the team showed but they kept fighting knowing that every bump and lump they took they understood how to avoid it later. Finishing in the silver pool the freshmen knew they did there best and that they had some work to do.

Next up were the Charger summer camps. Under the organization of Coach Bergman and the direction of Coach Newman the camps were fun and a complete success. Coach Bergman had foot surgery leaving Coach Newman to handle the responsibility. We had several high school players step up and help particularly Jordin Hopkins. The four day camp gave the campers a lot of ball contact and great feedback to help them on their way to becoming better people and players.

The Chargers took a different avenue for team camp this year by attending Indiana University. It is the current home of a former Centennial player, Morgan Leach, and middle blocker for the Hoosiers. There were many teams from the state of Indiana and a couple from Chicago. We had 18 girls attend the camp and they had 2 days full of volleyball. We made huge strides in understanding our potential and timing. The last day the 2 teams were placed in the final day tournament. The white team won their division and the navy team took 2nd place overall.

Parkland hosted a 16 team JV tournament and we had our freshmen and JV teams play in it. Under the direction of Megan Scharnett with the freshmen and out of retirement Coach Hall with the JV, they led the Chargers to a very impressive weekend. The freshmen took some prior learning and applied it to this tournament by finishing 3rd overall. The JV played Bradley B-B in the final. They split the first 2 sets and playing in the 3rd set they found themselves down 6-11. At this point is when they responded with great serving and defense they tied the game and finally winning the third set for the championship.

The upperclassmen split into 2 teams for the Parkland Varsity tournament the following weekend. Both teams ended up winning their respective pools, finishing in first place then set into a tournament bracket the next day. Centennial B dropped all 3 matches on Sunday, however many players and the team had moments of greatness finishing 8th overall out of 16 teams. Centennial A held off a very good Springfield High School team in 3 sets in their first match. They played Mahomet in the semifinal game and won in 2 sets. Playing in the championship match against Rochester, the Chargers were able to hold off their 2 outside bombers by winning the championship in 2 sets.

Overall, the Chargers had a great summer! The coaches had a chance to get to know the incoming players a bit better and the players had a chance to get a feel for Centennial volleyball.

Tryouts are up next, so we coaches hope the players find some rest and relaxation over the next 2 weeks and hope they are ready for season.

Despite the relocation to hold the camps at Jefferson Middle School, we had a great turn out of players this year. We had a total of 78 - 3rd through 8th graders attending camp this year. We were very grateful to have had some time with these wonderful young people as they begin their summer vacations. Thanks to the Centennial High School players who helped at camp and the staff, you all did a fantastic job.

The Chargers came out and really controlled the first 14 points building a 14-8 lead. Getting comfortable on the road is not a great choice as the Vikings put their serving and defense to work tying the set at 16-16. The Chargers rebounded behind Kara Johnson serves and built a 19-16 lead and kept the Danville attack at bay with a 25-23 victory. In the second set the Chargers put on the business face and got down to work taking 2 points to their 1 point jumping out to a 7-3 lead. Paulina Nottingham went in and ran off 7 straight points behind Lindsay Rogan, Kelly Wachtel, Kara Johnson and Kelsey Olion's passing to give our offense a chance to work. Paulina lead the way with 12 assists and Kelly Wachtel 8 kills. The Chargers were going in as the defending champions and wanted to make a statement for themselves by making the trip to reclaim the top spot. There were several teams and sets to be played for that to happen.

Up first was Kennedy. Although out sized, Kennedy was a tough defenseive team. The Chargers rolled out to a great lead and dominated Kennedy with some great serving and an offense that shut down their serve with a 25-17 victory. Set 2 was the opposite as Kennedy did not allow 1 earned point on serve, siding the Chargers out every time beating the Chargers 25-13. The third set was then a toss up. With both sides exchanging leads through the first 7 points, Kennedy managed a 3 point lead in a set to 15 points. The Chargers continued to try and break the lead and did by tying the score at 10-10. With 2 missed serves and 2 hitting errors, the Chargers still only fell 15-13 to Kennedy.

Regardless, the Chargers rebounded quite well winning the next 4 sets without contest. They played with much more determination and the defense and serving put their high octane offense to work. The Chargers defeated host Wilmington 25-; 25-. They also played Kankakee winning 25-, 25- and a local area team CPCI winning 25-; 25-. The Chargers still had a chance to win the pool with a Kennedy loss, but that did not happen, so The Chargers finished second in their pool and played Brookfield Riverside in the silver championship bracket.
