Despite all of the fancy gadgets at my disposal, I am a notebook dinosaur - a notebookasaurus, if you will. My notebook contains room schemes for every room in the new condo: fabric swatches, wallpaper samples and paint chips are all glued into its coiled pages. It may be old fashioned, but I like the ease of having everything in one place. How do you organize your thoughts and ideas?

Now that the time has come to start considering a rug purchase, I realize that I know very little about the genre. The value of a rug is determined by many contributing factors such as how it's made, where it's made, and what it's made from. If you ask me, the most important component is the prettiness factor ;-)

Break Out The Campaign!!

Imagine walking into your local thrift store and finding the exact piece of furniture you've had rolling around in the back of your mind for months. This, my friends, is a true story.

The sagging Ikea entertainment console in my living room needs to be replaced with something sturdier, and I already had a particular piece in mind: a campaign dresser. After searching for nearly 6 months to find the perfect pair of bamboo bedside tables, I could hardly bear the thought of another long furniture quest. So you can imagine my over-the-moon excitement when I popped into the Village on Friday and spied a brand new 7 drawer Dixie Campaigner dresser. When I say brand new, I mean it - the 1971 hangtag is still attached and the handles are wrapped in the original tissue paper. Can you believe my luck? Somebody pinch me!!

IDS: Rug Roundup

Later this year when I move into the new condo, one of the big ticket purchases will be a large rug for the living room, and maybe a runner for the front hall. Could that explain why I noticed so many rug options during my tour of IDS? You name it: recycled, over-dyed, custom creations, kilims and flat weaves. There are so many wonderful options, how will I ever choose?

I find it interesting how fashion and decor trends have become nearly simultaneous. Not long ago, I would have said that fashion trends lead the way and home decor follows about a year later, but all that has changed. What you see on the runways and red carpets will soon be on your couch. This is why I loooove to watch all of the red carpet arrivals during awards season.

Tonight the Screen Actors Guild awards aired, and although there were plenty tried and true neutrals, I always look forward to seeing some COLOUR!!!. For this post I'm narrowing my favourites down to just one Best Dress per colour. And, by the way, how is it that no one wore yellow?!?!?

Highlights of IDS: Fave Booths to Visit

Obviously, these highlights are strictly my opinion, but if I were you, I wouldn't want to miss any of these booths. Toronto's Interior Design show is massive, filling the entire upper floor of the North Convention Centre, and it took four hours of walking to cover it all. If you find your energy waning, at least try to make it to these show highlights:

miss the bright, fresh and happy colour palette
of this year's outdoor furniture collection.

I had the pleasure of meeting Andrew Richard at Thursday's

media preview. He told me that the inspiration for the
entire colour palette came from a single striped fabric.
Great collection, Andrew!!

Last, but certainly not least, the Elte booth is a must see!!

It's beyond gorgeous, full of inspiration, and the
recycled Saree rugs are the most beautiful I've ever seen.

Can you say OMG over and over again until your mind
explodes? These recycled saree rugs have pretty much
the same effect. I just can't get over these beauties!!

If you hurry, you can still head down to IDS this afternoon at the Metro Convention Centre (north building). If I were you I would run there now!!

IDSToronto 2012: Preview

This morning a group of design bloggers and other media were treated to a sneak preview of this year's Interior Design Show, which is being held at the North building of the Toronto Convention Centre until January 29th. There is a lot to see at this show, so if you're planning to attend, I definitely recommend a pair of comfortable shoes!!

I don't want to give too much away too soon, but I am particularly looking forward to exploring the How Do You Live exhibit, sponsored by National Bank. This show feature examines the trend of condominium living, particularly here in Toronto, where there are 170 condominium developers, and more than 80 cranes currently standing (wow!!). Each container in the exhibit is decorated by a different Toronto based designer, and each presents a unique approach to living in a small space.

The National Bank participated in this exhibit as well, transforming their own mobile container with a design by Lisa Canning.

IDS 2012: ONEXONE Cherish Auction

The Interior Design Show (IDS) Opening Night Party is happening this Thursday, January 26th from 7-11 pm, and tickets are still available - do you have yours yet? As part of the evening's festivities, IDS will be hosting the Cherish Auction (no affiliation), where attendees will have the opportunity to bid on 20 Julian children's chairs, manufactured by Magis, and re-imagined by talented designers. 100% of proceeds from the auction will be donated to ONEXONE children's foundation.

For those of you not familiar with ONEXONE, the organization's mantra is "Hope is for Everyone". The goal of ONEXONE is to ensure each and every child has access to clean water, education, medical care, food and play. CB2 Opening Preview Party

They're here!!! CB2 held a preview party this evening for media, industry insiders, twitter followers and facebook friends. It was quite a crowd!! Canadians welcomed the retailer with open arms, and if tonight's turnout is any indication, CB2 will enjoy the benefits of this new relationship.

Golden Globes: What Happened to Colour?

Awards season and the red carpet brings many clues as to what we'll soon see on the racks at our favourite clothing boutiques. I was hoping for a lot more colour at this year's Golden Globes, but instead there were a lot of white, pale nude and flesh toned dresses. Some were indeed beautiful gowns, but it seemed like a safe choice for the actresses who didn't want to risk making a fashion faux pas. I've given each a rating from (1) to (10) based on nothing more than my own personal opinion.

Planning a Gallery Wall

The more I look at the floor plan of the new condo, the more I realize how few walls there are to work with. Of course the abundance of natural light will be a huge bonus, but it will take some ingenuity to find a spot for artwork, photography and mirrors. Here is the plan:

Being a highly organized planner, I decided to try a "mock-up" for a potential gallery wall. Using photos of all my framed photographs and artwork, I grouped them together on a dark and dramatic navy blue wall. This first attempt is very neat, with all of the outside edges aligned.

For the second trial, I tried to let the gallery flow more, even though it goes against my orderly nature. There is alignment within the grouping, rather than around the edges. A vibrant kelly green wall really draws the eye to this gallery.

What do you think? Dark, dramatic and orderly? Or bright and free flowing?

CB2 Opening: This Time They Mean It

After multiple construction delays (hey, preserving a Toronto heritage building is not an easy task), CB2 is firm on opening its doors at Queen and Bathurst next Saturday, January 21st. This will be the first CB2 location to open on Canadian soil. Expect it to be busy. Woot!!

Flowers in the Dressing Room!!

Have you received the recent Ikea flyer in your mailbox? They're currently promoting The Bedroom Event, where buyers receive 15% back in Ikea gift cards on all PAX wardrobes and KOMPLEMENT interiors. I sooo want to get a PAX system for my new condo, but without knowing the exact measurements of the space it's impossible to purchase it now. Bummer :-(

The point I'm actually getting around to making is how much I love the magnolia wallpaper used in the Ikea dressing room. Gorgeous!! The paper is produced by Cole & Son, it is called Magnolia from the Patina collection, and it is available in four different colourways. Isn't it pretty?

Fresh as a Snapdragon

This idea for a unique floral display is from the February 2012 issue of Chatelaine magazine. I have always been a fan of snapdragons, and I love the variety of fresh spring colours that have been used in this particular "bouquet". What's makes this idea extra fresh? Adding a candle within the vase makes the flowers appear as though they are glowing. So pretty!!

Stuff I Don't Want to Pack

I think the title says it all. Though I'm not running out to the store for empty boxes just yet, I'm starting to consider what will be moving with me when the time comes. So far I've sold some items of furniture on Kijiji, and there are a few more large pieces that need to be listed, but first I have to drag them out of the dreaded packed to the rafters storage locker.

Imagining the Master

The master bedroom should feel like a peaceful, relaxing, comfortable space, where one can shut out the world and unwind. In the new condo, for the first time in my life, I'll have a master suite with a walk in closet and adjoining bath. It's kind of a big deal. I'm thinking about the mood of the room, and to achieve a truly restful space, I prefer that the colours be soft and calming.

Decorative Accessories: Orbs

This morning Clarke & Clarke sent out a little tweet, featuring a preview of their new Bukhara fabric collection. I love the hassocks upholstered in the Zari print. So pretty!!

Bukhara is a stunning collection of embroidered linens, coordinated stripes, jacquard and plain fabrics. The inspiration comes from ancient Persia, where traditional ethnic patterns are combined with rich, bold colours, producing a very unique mix of fabrics for curtains, upholstery and decorative pieces.
