Is the Apple Watch good for surfing?

If you're in a hurry and don't have time to read the pros and cons: Yes, it is.

The Apple Watch is a good watch for using (and tracking) during surf (in my case SUP surf) and biking (in my case mostly gravel riding)

Since the Apple Watch 2 presentation I've been considering it for tracking my sports. I like to track almost everything. I like numbers and I like to crunch them. But a lack of reviews for that purpose and the appearance of a delicate and expensive product added to a lack of robust original bands held me back.

I searched for reviews of surfers using it, but didn't find many.

I searched for review of mountain bikers using it, but didn't find many.

So after the launch of the Watch Series 4 I decided to give it a go. And it works. I bought the Apple Watch Series 4 in 40mm with the sport band:

First thing I did is trying to understand the best way to secure the sport band to make sure not to lose the watch at my first session 😁. In the end it's only about having the right length tucked around your wrist. The silicone (sorry Apple, fluoroelastomer) material friction would make it hard to untuck and thus unpin.

Second step was to look for the best surf tracking app and after reading reviews and asking a few people I installed the Dawn Patrol App which gives you info about your session: place, date, time, water time, number of waves, distance surfed and time surfed (on the waves):

It also gives you individual information for each wave you rode: max speed, distance traveled and time on the wave:

Apart from all your sessions recorded, and your records: top speed, longest wave and best wave time.

So far I recorded 4 sessions from 0.6m (2 feet) to 1.5m (5 feet) with no big wipe out.

First 3 sessions were with trunks and lycra over the watch and the last one with a 2mm wetsuit. On this last one session I tested both the wetsuit covering the watch and the watch above the wetsuit and it seems to work well in both cases, which gives you an additional security if you can cover the watch with the wetsuit.

I'll further test it during the winter months with a ticker 4mm wetsuit.

Regarding the sport band ... it seems it works, but you know I still lack confidence on the durability and security of the pin and tuck closure.

Will keep searching for a nice and security inspiring band.

SUP Surfing in Paradise

Recorded with GoPro Session 5 and the Bite Mount with the floaty. On waves like these you have to add a leash or something as they ripped my paddle once and would rip the GoPro if I was without a leash for it. And know why even the leash broke ... on the last wave

My notes on Outliers: The Story of Success

One of the fastest read books for me. I started reading it on August 19th on a Sunday morning on the day starting a family holidays trip to Mauritius and finished it on the next day reading it, on the planes back home.

My notes:

"Success is the result of what sociologists like to call "accumulative advantage"". You don't end up being successful just by a strike of luck, raw talent or hard work in isolation, it's in fact because of a series of accumulative advantages. Most important ones :

When and where you are born
What your parents did for a living
Circumstances of your upbringing

What is real intelligence? It's IQ test results? No, it's "practical intelligence", and what is "practical intelligence"? Knowing what to say to whom, knowing when to say it, and knowing how to say it for maximum effect".

The following is not an important note from the book, but something I like to remember. I truly believe that some things happen because they should happen > Embrace everything as an opportunity.

"Those three things - autonomy, complexity, and connection between effort and reward - are, most people agree, the three qualities that work has to have if it is satisfying."

Dani Pedrosa looks like a good chap to me, but he has never been my favourite rider. Far from it.

In fact it has always taken me "out of my boxes" he has had a permanent seat at Honda's mighty RCV. So I'm glad, that finally HRC decided it was time to stop the nonsense.

He was never going to get "there". He lacks the "character" the aggressiveness needed. He is overrated.

But ...

Who is overrated now? DP26 or VR46?

One has been openly and publicly criticised (fairly). The other has been praised despite some "The Godfather" manoeuvres.

I have to add that during this period the Yamaha has been well above the Honda in terms of overall performance (It is true that VR46 spent 2 years suffering in the Ducati).

Valentino is a legend, a heck of a rider, he was the fastest, sells lots and lots of motorcycles with the Yamaha tag on them, but he's too powerful inside Yamaha: he seems to decide what, who, when and how. Probably without

Dani Pedrosa parece una "gran" persona, pero nunca ha sido mi piloto favorito, ni mucho menos.

De hecho siempre me ha sacado de mis casillas que tenga un sitio en Honda HRC. Así que me alegro, que por fin HRC se haya cansado de esperar.

No iba a llegar nunca. Le falta mala leche. Esta sobrevalorado.

Quien es quien está más sobrevalorado ahora? DP26 o VR46?

Uno ha sido abiertamente criticado (justamente). El otro alabado aunque las haya hecho dignas de El Padrino.

Tengo que añadir que además la Yamaha ha estado muy por encima de la Honda (Cierto es que VR46 se pasó 2 años sufriendo en la Ducati).

Valentino es una leyenda, un pilotazo, era el más rápido, vende un montón de motos para Yamaha, pero tiene demasiado poder en allí dentro: decide que, quien, cuando y como. Seguramente sin quererlo ni unos ni otros, está arruinando la increíble trayectoria de Yamaha Racing en MotoGP.

Y encima ahora se les escapa JL99 ...

SUP surfing needs to reframe

I'm saddened by the current state of SUP surfing, or the lack of it.

The constant over-promises and under-deliveries of SUP Tours is dramatic and we're lost until the WSL or equivalent gets it under their umbrella. Something that won't happen with the current shape of the sport: it's fat and slow ;-(

The lack of free SUP surfing videos is also worrying. Even more than the lack of a pro tour, because videos online, like it or not, are what drives today's culture. And we all are to blame on this.

The industry is pointing toward other disciplines that sell more now, but we all know the origin of the sport is in surfing waves and if we make SUP surfing cool again, we'll all benefit from what we love apart of regaining the respect.

We (brands, athletes, and individuals) must work to put SUP surfing back where it deserves. SUP Surfing needs a reset, needs to inspire and needs to grow from its ashes. We have to promote stuff, videos and photos surfers will love, not hate. We're are surfers. And we must communicate the art of surfing. Surfing with the benefit of having a paddle.

Nothing against racing, touring, inflatables, or yoga. Just passion for SUP surfing.

Hoy en España se hace el sorteo de la Lotería de Navidad. Otro "fraude legal" del gobierno a sus ciudadanos.

El gobierno celebra el día Nacional de la incultura matemática.

Loterías y Apuestas del Estado: Aprovechamos que eres tonto, para sacarte un poco más de pasta.

Me explico:

En España se juega mucho a la lotería, demasiado. Es un "fraude legal" del gobierno que le genera unos buenos ingresos. Por tanto, es normal que en un país de ladrones, no se le explique a la población, con escasa o nula formación matemática, como funciona exactamente la lotería.

Según los últimos datos, el gasto medio en lotería de Navidad es de 46€.

Si un adulto medio lo hace durante 40 años para hacerlo fácil.

El gasto en lotería de Navidad asciende a 1.840€!!!

Con una probabilidad de que le toque el gordo de aproximadamente 0,00001% (1 entre 100.000 o una aguja en un pajar).

Si en lugar de gastarse estos 46€ cada año, esta misma persona hubiese invertido en bolsa esa misma cantidad cada año, acabaría teniendo 24.477,11€

Ganar 24.477,11€ frente a perder 1.840€

Y esos 24.477,11€ los he calculado como si invirtiese en un índice (10% medio anual). Sin elegir acciones ni complicarse la vida.

Getting crazy about copycats

I confess, sometimes copycats burn my energy levels and stress me out.

It's been therapeutic to reread my post about how to deal with copycats which conclusions I rewrite (for myself first)

If a product/service is very good. It'll be copied, no matter how you try to protect it. Example: GoPro dozens of fake cameras.
Competition is fierce and everybody wants your piece of cake. And remember that pioneers get arrows in their backs
Don't compete in price. Keep to your price tag. If their price it lower: a) Their product is inferior (like in this case) or b)They don't know their real costs or c) Both
Go ahead, keep innovating and they'll be always one step behind. In fact they're copycats with no imagination.
If you don't have enough ideas, stay close to your main customers. There are plenty of things to improve. Always. The world is in constant change and everything is yet to be improved and/or disrupted.
Ship fast. Fast as hell. Don't wait for perfection.
And last but not least important ... raise them the middle finger!!!

From eggs and bacon to 16 hour fasting every day

To be fair, never heard about fasting before Tim Ferriss Tools Of Titans book and this sentence on Dominic D'Agostino chapter: "If you don't have cancer and you do a therapeutic fast 1 to 3 times per year, you could purge any precancerous cells that may be living on your body"

It was worth to investigate this further, don't yo think?.

Investigating, I realised Kevin Rose was launching his fasting app Zero, which made it easier to record my progress, or lack of thereof.

I opted for the more mellow Intermittent Fasting option, some days a week. At first I struggled to reach 14 hours. Even to reach 12 hours. Some days I succeeded, others failed miserably, but I kept trying without forcing myself. Without pressure. Without pain.

Suddenly, after summer holidays in California, where I was having eggs and bacon as breakfast every single day and where my fasting was inexistent, I now easily fast for more than 16 hours each day I try, or remember to record the fast.

I simply try to finish dinner before 9PM, and to never have breakfast (except if I go for a ride on the bike). So when I have lunch at 13:15 or later I've been fasting for more than 16 hours.

Benefits?. Weight lose with much less exercise than before.

For the moment I ignore other benefits as have not had any recent blood test.

Will keep reporting.

And a warning: try it before it becomes a fad

Super useful trick or hack to use when you register to services, websites, newsletters, etc.

You can use "+" on your email address, and it can be your insurance to know if you address has been hacked, sold to others or simply illegally shared.

How to do it?

Imagine I want to sign up to Twitter and my email address is mariano@gmail.com. If I register with mariano+twitter@gmail.com I can still register, the emails would keep arriving to my inbox and I would be able to quickly notice if twitter sells my email address to others, or gets hacked.

I noticed tough that on some services it doesn't allow to do it. For example Norwegian didn't allowed me.

Fear, yes fear of what may happen if Catalonia reach independence. But fear also if we keep being part of Spain. A lost country. A country with no future. A great country to go on holidays, but for nothing else.

Lies everywhere, all the time. The problem is that to keep Spain together, government, opposition and a big part of the population are accepting everything. Dirty games. Manipulation and the end of democracy.

Will Catalonia become independent? I don't know. Will be hard, very difficultt. Doable but difficult. But I also thought voting on October 1st was impossible.

I was seriously considering paying for Strava Premium for this feature: the ability to share your location when you're riding (or surfing, or running) alone.

Imagine that you crash and lost consciousness, or you get lost, or ...

Being able to share your location is a nice feature.

And yesterday I learnt this can be done on the always growing Google Maps app. How?

Very easy:
1. Open the "hamburger" menu and click on Share Location:

2. Here you can select the duration you want to share your location and the person/s you want to share with

3. And Done.

Simple, easy, and "free".

Religion is the fucking cause off all the hate. If everybody believed in themselves and on the collective power and not on fucking, artificial, non-existing Gods, nothing like these would never happen.

Religion, all religions, are the cause of so much pain. God, all Gods, are the cause of so much pain.

Believe in yourself and not on any imposed false divinity that only creates hate, pain and death.

We have so many good scientists fighting to find a cure of cancer, but who will find the cure for religion?

Elon Musk is right, the pace of change is so fast and so exponential that the transport industry will be totally different very soon. As soon as 2019.

We're used to falling technological promises. Remember the flying cars?. But now it's for serious, technology is advancing exponentially and transport is going to be disrupted. Totally disrupted.

Why I'm writing this now?. Just after reading a piece of news explaining that Mercedes is entering Formula E in 2019. Ok, that's nice.

And that it’s dropping DTM. Wow 😮 . Just wow!!!. Do you know what DTM means for german petrolheads?

It means Mercedes is full gaz (sorry for the easy joke) into electric racing. It’s determined to dominate the electric/autonomous car, as well as BMW, Volkswagen, Toyota, Tesla and others. Nice times ahead.

I'll have to change car in 2019 (the renting expires) and was resigned it would be an hybrid, or even worse, another diesel …

But more and more important news like this are breaking every month, every week, so now I'm confident I’ll have a full electric car, a station wagon, in 2019.

And I hope I can have another car by then: a classic, petrol, tyre-eater beast. A car for the weekends. A car for enjoyment, not for transport. A car as an investment. But this is another story ...

2016 surfing year

At the end of 2015 I went back to keep records of my surf sessions, well SUP surfing sessions that for me is the same sport, but this can be the subject of another post.

I went back to record my sessions at the end of November 2015 using Glassy.Pro, the app from a Spanish startup developing a wearable for surfing purposes. I used to do it on a Excel spreadsheet back in the day, but stopped doing it many years ago, around 2010.

The app still lacks some functionality, for example for extracting statistics like the following, that should be counted manually, but the app looks promising.

So here's my 2016 data:

I'll end the year 2016 at 63 64sessions, as there's no swell forecasted for at least the next week (well it was a late 31st december session). As I ended 2015 at 3 sessions (registered at Glassy), my surf sessions count for 2015 will be

6061 sessions on 2016

That is 5 sessions per month, which I think its pretty average here in the Med. Yes, this is why we suck!!!.

Since I only enter the water when the waves are good or I can't wait any more, I think it can be considered as a standard year.

For months, January (6), March (8), May (6), July (7) and December (8) are above the fold. March in the Med? not exactly: a pre-Easter trip to Tarifa amended it. May in the Med? Yes, quite surprised also. In fact some of the best memories I have are from a rainy Sunday morning session early May. July in the Med? not exactly, some family days in France.

My longest session was 2h48min at Nova Mar Bella in Barcelona, early November. A session rated as 3 stars.

My shortest session was 25min, early December just for a shake down on a new custom Wasp SUP:

Biggest swell was 1,9m in two sessions at Cabrera, Barcelona in May!!!, and Masnou, Barcelona in October.

On 5 days I surfed really small waves (real waves, not buoys) below 0,5m, that the one below:

I had one 5 starred sessions, and four 1 starred sessions. Mean is 3 stars.

So, let's define next year objectives: 6572 sessions, at least three 5 star sessions, at least 2 foreign countries and minimum a ton of fun ;-)

Yes, I repeat the title: Nothing will change ... despite the "moron" above won the USA elections.

I said nothing would happen after the Brexit, I repeat it after Trump and I'd repeat it after Catalonia independence. In the end, nothing substantial changes, nothing substantial to you.

You're responsible for the changes that directly apply to you and yours. You're responsible for the 99% of what happens to you and yours, so let the morons do what morons do:

1. They're not morons if they are where they want.

2. The real powers will keep controlling politics as always did.

I've been always a pro-innovation, and I think is what separates key players (people, companies, countries) from losers (people, companies, countries), but just saw this:

And couldn't disagree more.

We leave in world of start-up hype, of idea hype, what we need, what the world needs is the execution.

Innovation without Production (manufacturing, coding, ..) is meaningless.
Marketing without Sales is meaningless.

So if I had to define business by two areas: Production&Sales would be my choice.

Deal with copycats

Fuck you copycats. I hope you burn in hell, you mother fuc***s!!!

Yes, we have been copied ... again.

After the first rage, and desire to pick a plane and tell them something in the face I tried to calm myself and extract some conclusions. In the end any successful product or service will be copied and demonstrates flattery from the copiers. They love us. Thank you for the love mother fuc**s!

If a product/service is very good. It'll be copied, no matter how you try to protect it. Example: GoPro dozens of fake cameras.
Competition is fierce and everybody wants your piece of cake. And remember that pioneers get arrows in their backs
Don't compete in price. Keep to your price tag. If their price it lower: a) Their product is inferior (like in this case) or b)They don't know their real costs or c) Both
Go ahead, keep innovating and they'll be always one step behind. In fact they're copycats with no imagination.
If you don't have enough ideas, stay close to your main customers. There are plenty of things to improve. Always. The world is in constant change and everything is yet to be improved and/or disrupted.
Ship fast. Fast as hell. Don't wait for perfection.
And last but not least important ... raise them the middle finger!!!
