A long time ago I came across a tin full of watch parts (gears and hands and such) and I was so excited to get home to make some stuff with them, well it just didn't happen, the components sat in the tin for almost a year, I just couldn't come up with any ideas for using them that felt right. Then one day about a month ago inspiration struck, they would go perfectly with the retaining rings that I use in my Industrial Elegance line! So I Took the plunge and finally made some necklace and earrings. I've been a long fan of all things steampunk and am thrilled to be finally creating unique designs that fall under that category... Well I'm off again, heading out to Seattle on Saturday the 12th for lord knows how long! Things with my mother are improving and she is getting better but now there are some health issues with other members of the family and I am needed so off I go.

My Etsy shop will still be open in my absence, my ever reliable daughter and husband will be helping out (I trained them well), so never fear all orders will be shipped within 24 hours of purchase!

I will still be tweeting, facebooking and blogging and I have just finished designing and creating a bunch of new stuff to list in my shop while I am gone so be sure to visit often because there will be new listings almost daily! I am also taking a lot of my supplies with me so I can make new items while I am up there, so it is pretty much going to be business as usual. My ability to do custom orders will be limited (can't take everything with me!) but if you have something in mind please don't hesitate to contact me and I will see what we can work out!

I thought I would do a post here about the Industrial Elegance Planetary Series which I have been spending soooo much time on lately! I wanted to show them all together here.

I will only be making 3 different versions of each planet (3 different necklaces & 3 different earrings) Each version will have a different name...
Version 1: (Planet Name)
Version 2: (planet name) Revisited
Version 3: (planet name) Departure

Each version will be completely original in design...

Sol::
Our Sun, the star at the center of our solar system which all of the planets orbit... without it life on earth would not be possible.

Mercury::
the closest planet to the Sun, named after the swift footed messenger god which they equated with the Greek Hermes, because it moves across the sky faster than any other planet.

Venus::
The second-closest planet to the Sun, orbiting it every 224.7 Earth days. The planet is named after Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Except for the Moon it is the brightest natural object in the night sky

Earth::
the third planet from the Sun, and the largest of the terrestrial planets in the Solar System in terms of diameter, mass and density. It is also referred to as the World, Blue Planet,and Terra.

Named after the Roman god Saturnus (that became the namesake of Saturday), equated to the Greek Kronos (the Titan father of Zeus) the Babylonian Ninurta and to the Hindu Shani. Saturn's symbol represents the god's sickle .

Uranus::

Pluto::
The second-largest known dwarf planet in the solar system, Like the other planets (or former planet in this case), Pluto is named for a Roman god. The Greek equivalent of Pluto is Hades

****Please Note: The retaining rings used to create these pieces were not made for jewelry, they are hardware for keeping pins in machinery so there will be color variations, I do my best to completely match the rings to each other but sometimes it just isn't possible... the fact that they are not uniform in color and cosistancy adds to the charm of these pieces and just reinforces the overall "Industrial" look

Swarovski Crystal Wedding Jewelry

A while back I finally took the leap and decided to create some jewelry for weddings and proms, So far I've had a very favorable response! I just thought I would share a few of the creations that I made here with you...

The picture above features my niece wearing a necklace and earring set in the same design as the one pictured below which I made for her big day last August, the only difference is her necklace is done with purple crystals and has clear crystals working their way up the entire chain... the one below is done in the cobalt blue ab2x crystals and it does not have the clear crystals along the chain... The set may seem a bit overwhelming in the listing but as you can see above it is a very delicate set which adds a nice splash of color against the white of the dress.

Stunning Heliotrope and Cobalt Blue Swarovski Crystal Necklace and Earring Set...

A 14mm Heliotrope Swarovski heart is the centerpiece dangling on a silver plated bail at the very bottom of the necklace and along the sides, working their way up the chain are 3/4 inch dangles which consist of a curved silver plated bar chain link with 4mm crystal ab and cobalt ab2x Swarovski bicones on the bottom of each, there is another curved bar chain link between each dangle... The whole thing is on a delicate silver plated rolo chain. The earrings are Hand bent sterling silver french hook ear wires supporting a cascade of the curved chain lnks on a silver plated jump ring with the cobalt ab 2x bicones between them with a 10mm heliotrope swarovski heart at the bottom.

This set would look beautiful with a low cut wedding gown or prom dress. Perfect for any formal occasion!

Crystal AB Swarovski Heart and Rivoli Pendant Necklace and Earring Set...

A hand bent silver plated wire connector holds a single 14mm crystal ab Swarovski heart with 6mm crystal ab swarovski rivoli pendants along either side of it, this set is literally dripping with crystals! The earrings are simply the same delicate silver plated rolo chain as the necklace with a 10mm crystal ab Swarovski heart dangling at the bottom on hand bent sterling silver french hook ear wires.

This necklace makes a very bold statement, the crystals are pale yet they have maximum sparkle! This set would compliment a bridal gown embellished with crystals or a bold colored prom dress!! The crystals in this set reflect a yellow hue in the pictures, however, when they are against a white or lighter background they reflect blues and appear more clear.

Why You Ask?

Well I must say that the sale I had on my Ebay shop went pretty well! It was kind of a bummer to see a lot of the listings end without selling but overall I really cannot complain! Here is a big thank you to everyone who helped me to promote it and get the word out there!

I've had a lot of people ask me why I closed my ebay shop, so here it is.. Giving up Ebay was not an easy thing for me to do, that is where it all started for me! I finally realized that there was really no way for me to compete with the commercial vendors out there who were willing to mass produce their items... Not to mention the fact that the listing fees were KILLING me! I was seriously paying upwards of $80 a month to keep my shop open! Sure I was making sales there but was I really making any money??? Not a heck of a lot!

I feel that my line of products is a lot more appreciated on Etsy! Etsy is a truly wonderful place to sell, the people there are so friendly and helpful, handmade doesn't really mean a lot on EBay but it does on Etsy! I've made lots of friends over there, and I can honestly say that I feel at home there! What is funny is when I started this whole thing i was SO resistant to selling on Etsy, I was terrified that someone would consider me an "artsy" person... to me that phrase was the exact opposite to who I am, well here it is 8 months later and I now consider being called "artsy" a compliment! Funny how your perception of something will change isn't it? I still have a hard time thinking of myself as an "artist" though.

So there you have it, why I closed my Ebay shop!

Over the next few days I'll be trying to be better about posting here! I have a bunch of new items that I am going to list in my Etsy and 1000markets shops so be sure to check back soon! 1000markets is still kind of a mystery to me! I'll be honest though, I really haven't devoted a lot of time into trying to figure out how it all works, I've been so busy trying to get Ebay shut down that I really haven't had time to really do anything over there, but that is about to change!

Wow, it has been so long since I've posted here that I am feeling just a tad bit rusty!

Ok, lets see... what is new with me?

First of all I am VERY happy... I got my 100th sale today on Etsy!!! Things have been going pretty well lately and I owe a good portion of it to twitter, If you aren't using twitter to promote yourself I have only one question for you... Why not???

I finally got around to setting up a 1000markets shop and they accepted me! I am officially selling there now, I am working on having different items there then i have on my Ebay and Etsy shop, I realized that it was getting a bit stale having the same items in all of my stores. You should seriously head on over to the new shop and take a look, I already have a few new listings there that you won't see anywhere else...

My Thirteenth and final featured artist is Daniel of CatherinetteRings. I met Daniel on Entrecard where he was nice enough to help me figure out how some things there worked. Since then I have purchased 2 of his rings and they are truly works of art! Daniel's shop features a wide range of very unique Jewelry...

Start off by telling us about yourself...

My name is Daniel Proulx from Montréal. I make Wire-wrapped Steampunk Jewelry with brass, copper and gemstones

When did you start your art/craft and how
did you get into it?

In April of 2008 I started to make rings just for fun after Catherine (My better half) learned how to make simple wire rings during a 2 hour lesson. I just watched how she made it and tried. Since then I spent several hours every day perfecting and developing my own technique to create an original design. I quickly started to make very retro-futurist model of rings. At that time I decided embarked into this adventure, quit my job and try to live on my jewelry full-time.

One day a friend told me what I was doing was Steampunk. I research the subject and fell in love with this culture. I always liked Steampunk but I didn't know there was a name for it. Recently I had the chance to have my steampunk jewelry featured in the fashion Magazine Clindoeil and an article about my art in the newspaper Le Voir.

Where do you get your inspiration for your creations?

I always was very interested in fantasy imaginary world such as Dungeon & Dragon, Lord of the Rings and Science fiction. I’m also inspired by the mix of mechanical, organic shapes and contrast between ancient and futuristic designs.

Do you work at your art/craft full time or do you
have another job?

I’m doing this full-time and I don’t plan to work on anything else beside my craft.I and Catherine go to Local Art shows and we also give lessons from time to time.

If you could start over with your business is there anything you would do differently?

So far it’s only been 1 year and everything is going well, so I wouldn’t change anything.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Why?

The 12 of April 2008 I started the business one year ago and here I am where I never expected to be. In 10 year I will have learned many new jewelry making techniques, taken several course and I will have a large workshop where I will not only make jewelry but also large sculptures. For me it is just the beginning of the adventure.

Who do you admire (artist or otherwise)? Why?

There’s a company based in New Zealand that really impressed me and they are a source of inspiration by their immense creativity but also by their dedication to their art. The most amazing achievement is the Lords of the rings where they made all the miniatures, big-atures, props, swords and digital special effects. http://www.wetanz.com/ .

What tips would you have for someone that is
just starting out?

When I first quit my job and started to make jewelry full time many people thought it was crazy or that I was making the wrong choice (I don’t blame them because it’s out of the norm). The best advice I ever been given by my mother when I was little is to always follow your dreams no matter what other people says. If You believe in yourself you can achieve anything.

Featured Artist Spotlight: Brinda Kay Design

The Twelfth featured artist is Brinda of brindakaydesigns, I met Brinda in the Etsy forums but for the life of me I cannot remember which thread... Brinda has an amazing shop with some truly unique items, she makes purses and catch-all trays out of old record albums...

Start off by telling us about yourself:

I'm a self-employed graphic designer. I've always loved typography, graphic design, and photography. Along with logo and marketing design for small businesses, I used to do a lot of custom wedding invitation design too. I loved the production part of the invitations -- playing with all the gorgeous papers and ribbons. As far back as I can remember, my favorite hobbies always involved making stuff. Oh- and I'm not afraid of power tools.

When did you start your art/craft and how did
you get into it?

I was trying to keep my mom busy during a visit by doing some crafting.(My mom also loves working with her hands.) I started doing some crafting myself!

Where do you get your inspiration for your creations?

My inspiration comes from the music albums – either their cover art or the vinyl ‘s center logo or graphics. I am addicted to the “hunt” for those album covers. It’s my favorite part of the creation process.

Do you work at your art/craft full time or do you have another job?

I have a couple of small businesses where I still do the ad design and marketing work, but for the most part I work on my shop full time now.With all the marketing you have to do and still try to create- it becomes a full time job!

If you could start over with your business is there anything you would do differently?

This new business venture of mine is still very young, so I’m on a learning curve. I’m still trying to figure out how to schedule my time better. But if I’d have to pick one thing so far, I would definitely buy a postal scale! Wow, using the click n ship thru the post office’s website is a huge time saver.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Why?

Hmmm, I’d like to see myself in some wonderful studio space – a building down a pathway right near my house. Of course, the house and studio would be on a great piece of property with acreage, gorgeous trees and gardens. Why? Why not?!

What tips would you have for someone that is just starting out?

Oh, I don’t think I’m qualified yet to give any advice. I’m just starting out myself. But, I would definitely say that if you love what you are creating, just keep doing it!

Jen has two wonderful shops, one that sells amazing smelling bath and body products (yep I own some of those too) and her second shop has a wide range of beautiful mini thank you cards...

Start off by telling us about yourself...

My name is Jen, I'm 31 and have been married to my husband for 6 years this August, but we have been together for 12 years. We don't have any children, but have 5 nieces aged 3-11 who keep us pretty busy!

Before starting my business, I had several different jobs: I was employed by the Dept of Justice as an Immigration Inspector, I was a Private Investigator investigating fradulent workers comp claims, and had several jobs in the medical and financial insurance fields. And you know what? I hated all of those jobs, lol. Nothing compares to being my own boss, doing what I love to do each and every day.

When did you start your art/craft and how did
you get into it?

I started making candles about 5 years ago as a creative outlet. I hated my job and desperately needed a hobby to come home to in order to take my mind off of work pressures. I started making bath and body products about a year later because I loved smelling good, lol. The bath and body line really complements the candle line and allows my customers to create a spa-like experience at home for a fraction of the cost!

I just recently opened my card shop because I loved looking at all of the open cardstock at the craft store. I was buying thank you cards to send out with my orders and one day, with a gift card in hand and nothing I really needed at the craft store, I decided to try my hand at making my own cards :D It was so much fun that I decided to open a second Etsy shop and sell mini thank your cards as well.

Where do you get your inspiration for your creations?

I let the scrapbook paper aisle inspire me for my thank you cards! For the candle lines, let's just say I have A LOT of supplies on hand and there are some days where I have nothing else to do, lol. I get inspiration from all around me - my friends and family sometimes ask me to figure out how to make a specific product or something on TV or in the store will catch my eye and start my wheels turning.

Do you work at your art/craft full time or do
you have another job?

Thankfully, I do my craft full-time. The first 3 and a half years, I had a full-time job as well and ended up working 18 hour days. I am very happy being my own boss now!

If you could start over with your business is there anything you would do differently?

I would have spent more time learning about the business end of having my own company. I made a lot of costly mistakes in the beginning just because there were a lot of tax and business laws that I wasn't aware of.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Why?

I hope to be still self-employed and working on my business full-time. I would love to have a brick and mortar store someday, but I don't know if it will be in 10 years or not! I couldn't imagine not working on my craft full-time now :D

Who do you admire (artist or otherwise)? Why?

There are many people I admire for different reasons, and I think they have come into my life at specific times for a purpose. First, my mom - she is such a capable lady - she does everything so well and has always been greatly respected.

My husband, Jim, is also someone I admire. He is very calm and always has a lot of confidence in me, even when I'm not quite feeling it myself. Without his support, there is no way I would be able to do this.

What tips would you have for someone that is
just starting out?

Be patient! Don't expect to become rich over night, because in actuality, you'll probably spend more than you bring in the first year or two. Take your time to create your niche and make a high-quality product you can be proud of. Get to know your fellow crafters on Etsy - they will be some of the best friends you will ever find!

Start off by telling us about yourself...

I am a 30yr old stay at hom Mom with to two little boys Connor who's 5 and JJ who's 4. My hubby of 8 yrs Ryan is in the Army and has been for over 17yrs. I love to sew, crochet, bead, quilt, and I am attempting to learn how to spin my own yarn. (wish me luck on that) I recently opened my shop on Etsy and love it.

When did you start your art/craft and how
did you get into it?

I don't exactly remember when I started, I grew up with my mom at the sewing machine as much as she could be. I remember sewing a pair of shorts with her, she taught me the basics of crochet and it took off from there. Though I didn't really get back into it untill 6 years ago or so and then it was learn as I go and honestly a lot of it still is.

Where do you get your inspiration for your creations?

Just about everywhere, I don't think I could pinpoint one specific place. With my jewelry a lot of the time I just sit down an d an idea either comes to me or it doesn't. If it doesn't I put the beads away and turn to my sewing machine or my crochet hook and work on something simple to clear my mind. Or put it all away and do some housework or games with the boys. Ultimately all my inspiration comes from my family because it is them I am doin this for. I want them to see that with persistence you can do what you dream of.

Do you work at your art/craft full time or do you
have another job?

I work it part time, my full time job is being a Mom to my two boys and a Wife to my wonderful husband.

If you could start over with your business is there anything you would do differently?

Honestly I don't really think so. Other than maybe have a few more pieces ready to sell. I know I haven't sky rocketed to the top, but I learn each and every day and feel that is the best way for me. If I had taken right off I might have gone crazy trying to keep up with it.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Why?

Attending Karate Tournaments, Baseball Games, Soccer Games, concerts, and whatever else the boys decide to be involved in. And along with that I would love to be a complete success with my business online.

Who do you admire (artist or otherwise)? Why?

I admire my mom. With all she has been through she has raised me to be the strong, independant, creative woman that I am today. She has given me the tools I need to succeed and I admire her more than words could express.

What tips would you have for someone that
is just starting out?

My biggest tip is to be patient, total success won't happen overnight. Your sales will eb and flow like a roller coaster, slow climbs up and fast coasts down. Keep your name out there, talk about it all you can, chat and promote in the forums and any other socializing site you are on. Stay positive, remember you get what you put out in the world.

Start off by telling us a little bit about yourself

My name is Trish and I am a jewelry designer based in Hong Kong. I moved here not too long ago from Australia with my partner and cat. I design everything in our apartment which doubles as my studio and showroom. If I am not designing jewelry, I am probably doing something outdoors - running, hiking, exploring. My other passion is snowboarding - although unfortunately it doesn't snow where I am so I do spend the other half of my free time planning our next trip =D

When did you start your art/craft and how
did you get into it?

My mother was a fashion designer when I was young – she made the most fabulous couture gowns and of course, adorable girly things for me. Growing up, I did everything from painting, drawing, to sculpturing and even tried my hand at the sewing machine - but it was jewelry design that I really love. Eventually at university, I was selling to my network of friends but never thought to really promote further than that. Half a year ago, I moved from Australia to Hong Kong with my partner which meant I had to quit my corporate day job. He is the key driving force behind my business – with no social network in HK (and no job!) to begin with, he encouraged me to really start a proper business after I always kept getting asked where I bought my jewelry from. I now sell on Etsy, and offline – via a catalogue and custom orders!

Where do you get your inspiration for
your creations?

I am inspired by elegance – my mother is probably the most fashionable lady I have ever met and she is my muse. My creations are for the female who is not afraid to make a statement through her accessories and who wants to be centre of attention. I am inspired by colour – I have a special soft spot for anything in gold as you will see from my designs! Lastly, I am inspired by my partner – I definitely wouldn't be where I am now without his tireless encouragement and emotional support.

Do you work at your art/craft full time or do
you have another job?

I would love to be a full-time jewelry designer! At the moment, I have two jobs and barely any sleep!

If you could start over with your business is there anything you would do differently?
I definitely would do many things differently! With your own business comes a steep learning curve and there is not a day that goes by where I haven’t learnt something new. The main thing I would do differently is to have had the confidence to start my business earlier!!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Why?

Wow, that's a tough one. I honestly don't know. Hopefully I have my own established jewelry label by then! I would also love to branch out into vintage clothes, and other accessories.

Who do you admire (artist or otherwise)? Why?

I admire all the artists on Etsy for having the courage to set up shop and display their talent. I recently read an article where someone said that the sellers on Etsy cannot possibly be considered as artists because many of them are self-taught and don't have a Arts degree, etc. - and if you take a look around the Etsy community, that person is very very wrong. I secretly love Miriam Haskell - I collect as many of these vintage jewelry stampings and designs as I possibly can - and hoard them. Fashion-wise, I am a huge fan of D&G, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga...everything classic yet edgy.

What tips would you have for someone that is just starting out?

If you’re planning to start your own online business, my tips would definitely be:

1.) Promote! And promote more! Take advantage of the social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter, the Etsy forums, and more. With thousands and thousands of other online businesses, especially in jewelry, getting your designs out there is especially hard if you don’t get the hang of promoting.

2.) Good photos of your products – I never once thought that I would be opening that digital camera manual and absorbing each word until I started putting my designs online. As customers cannot actually touch and feel the product, getting clear and well taken photos is a MUST for every online business.

3.) Lots of patience AND persistence – Don’t just set up shop, wait a few days and complain you have no sales! Keep promoting, persisting with putting new items for sale, promoting, etc…. and eventually the sales fairy will come!

And lastly, I wouldn't restrict oneself to just selling online - there is a huge market where you are located ready to be tapped, so get out to craft/designer markets or put together a portfolio to show stores!

Start off by telling us about yourself...

I am a 29 year old stay at home mom and housewife. I live in Jerome, Idaho with my husband, son, 2 cats, and way too much yarn.

When did you start your art/craft and how did you get into it?

My little sister taught me how to knit about 3 years ago. I was pregnant with my son at the time, and I wanted to make baby things for him. By the time I got the hang of it, my son had been born and I didn't have time to even think straight. I actually forgot I knew how to knit until that Christmas when my sister bought me some knitting needles, yarn, and a pattern book. I have been knitting ever since. I began designing my own knits about 6 months after that.

Where do you get your inspiration for your creations?

I am inspired by fashion and nature mostly. A lot of my ideas come to me in dreams.

Do you work at your art/craft full time or do
you have another job?

My full time job is taking care of my son, cooking, cleaning, and trying to keep my husband happy. Whatever time I have left is spent knitting and designing.

If you could start over with your business is there anything you would do differently?

No, I am just getting started with my business. I like to think of it as a work in progress; every day is a learning experience.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Why?

I hope to have another child by then. It is my dream to be successfully selling my handmade items, so I can continue to work from home and be there for my children. Other than that I try not to look too far ahead. I like to let God lead me where he may.

Who do you admire (artist or otherwise)? Why?

I admire my husband for being so supportive of my creative endeavors. And for working such long hours at his job so I can stay home and raise our son.

What tips would you have for someone that is
just starting out?

I would tell anyone just starting out to be patient and not get discouraged. It takes a long time to get your name out there. Just keep creating, promote whenever you can, and hang in there.

Start off by telling us about yourself...

Ok lets see, Im a mom of two grown children. Daughter is 23 and my son is 20. I live in Southern California, Ventura County. Ive lived in California my whole life and Its hard to see leaving here. Ive been married for 13 yrs. I started my ceramics business about 12 yrs ago and it just keeps growing.....I love all things whimsical, colorful and fun!

When did you get started in your art/craft and how did you get into it?

I have to say I have been painting or drawing for as long as I can remember. One of my designs, The sunshine pattern, is a design a drew as a little girl and it hasn't changed much. Friends use to say " If its standing still, Julianne will paint it." I painted furniture, walls, fabric.etc. The ceramics though came into play about 12 yrs ago. My best girl friend, Wendy Lee Lynds, and I decide one day to go to one of those paint your own ceramic stores..........Well its been history since then. I found a medium I really enjoyed and it is totally functional along w/being art. I like that!

Where do you get the ideas for your creations?

I'm inspired by my surroundings and experiences. I'm also inspired by inspiration it self. I try and paint things to invoke some sort of response and hopefully that response will be a smile and joyfulness. I have a line called "Give back to Africa" and this line was all based on my trip to Zambia last year. On my travels all these designs were brewing in me. I knew when I got home I had a lot of work to get done.......:0) I also new that I had to use part of my sales to give back to the women and children of Africa. I think I'm most proud of this line because it involves my two loves. Creating and giving back and helping others.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Why?

Honestly, I see my self being able to travel and giving back to others because my art is fully supporting me and those I want to go help. Its the dream and I'm going to keep dreaming it! I would love to write a childrens book and illistrate it with my designs, fabric with my designs and all things that go with that............

If you could start over is there anything you would do differently?

No I don't really think I would. I think each step forward or backwards has defined me and helped develop me as an artist and business women.

Do you work at your art/craft full time or do you have another job?

I'm a full timer! Well let me say, I have the freedom to work at it full time. Weather I'm always working well that's a different story! :0) My husband has given me the freedom to be an artist and devote myself to it. I am blessed to be able to have a studio in the house and work from home.

Who do you admire (artist or otherwise)? Why?

I admire people who follow their dreams and their beliefs. Artist and non artist. I surround myself with people I admire so I can continued to be inspired. One of the people I admired so much was my father..........He was, is, my hero. I also admire Mother Teresa, her unfailing love and service to others is awesome.

What tips would you have for someone that is just starting out?

Try to surround yourself with people who believe in you first and foremost. Believe in yourself. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Be open to growing in your art and allow yourself to self discovery. Never stop evolving...........

Start off by telling us about yourself...

I Believe that creativity is our birthright, but realizing that fear can paralyze the creative soul, I seek to bring the joy of creating into everything I do. For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a visual artist but let fear keep me away from my heart's desire. For a million reasons, and one motorcycle man from Utah, I radically changed my life, and am now living my dream on beautiful Whidbey Island, WA, creating multi-layered, textural works in encaustic, collage and monotypes and teaching art, too!

When did you first get interested in creating your
art and how did you get into it?

I think I have always been interested in old rusty things, always dabbling with design, putting things together in a creative way (my room, scribbling and doodling in my notebook in high school) but I never put it down to wanting to do "art", that's art with a capital "A"! I was a singer in high school and thought that was where my talent was firmly planted, no place else. Did some stenciling and sponge-painting walls in my earlier adult years and loved to decorate homes, but never called it "art" either, was a weaver for a while in there, too, but again, didn't think of it as "Real art"......wasn't until 2003 that I really realized I wanted to actually try my hand at art. but not the truly "fine art". I was much more interested in texture and collage and slapping things together with glue and paint and seeing where they would lead. kind of like "instant gratification"!

Where do you get the ideas for your creations?

I'm particularly interested in textures and organic things. I have always gathered shells and leaves and interesting bits and bobs that I would find laying about, found objects that were all rusty and aged. stuff that other people might not look at because it might be considered "junk"..........those were the objects that held my attention. things that have had another life, another layer to them, not all new and shiny. for some reason graphic images hold an interest, too. I’m not sure why, but I am consistently drawn to strong graphic statements in advertising and fabrics and the like...........oh, and lets' not forget text! I love text of any kind......any kind of calligraphic markings are interesting, too. I work rather intuitively, I think. throwing things together, often what I have right at my fingertips, trying not to let "thought" get in the way, just going with the "feelings". more often than not, I don't have the slightest idea where I’m headed with a particularly piece. not a clue! make for an exciting journey!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Why?

oh, man, Tara, that's a hard one. but I know that it's a necessary question to ask. what's the old saying? "failing to plan, is planning to fail". oh, wow, since this is fantasy time, I’ll have a go at it. ten years from now? okay, here goes:
"I have a good reputation nationwide as a good art teacher and am sought-after for original and life-changing workshops. I’m producing high-quality, accessible, affordable art, encaustics, mixed media, collages and monotypes and actually making a good living from it, too! I get to attend a lot of high-caliber art workshops and am honing my skills, I’m writing a great art book that will inspire those fearful of art to SOAR and I’m still madly in the love with the love of my life and enjoying living on this island with our three pups!
oh, wow! that was fun, Tara! thanks for letting me dream and actually see what the future can hold if I stay the course and put my mind to it!!

If you could start over is there anything you would do differently?

I’d start younger. I did not come to art, not really, until I was in my mid-forties. but one shouldn't regret anything and I know that I am like a cannon ball being shot from a cannon! nothing's gonna stop me now!! I’m makin' up for lost time!

Do you work at your art/craft full time or do
you have another job?

I’d love to tell you that I am making oodles and scads of money from just my art. not true, at least not yet - SOON!! I’m working on it, day by day. happily, through a stroke of good luck and a little bit of nerve, I started teaching in the fall of 2007. I am teaching collage, composition and art journaling. it's been a real ride. very satisfying and kinda terrifying, too. and I find that I am actually good at it, especially beginners, those who are afraid of art and don't think they have it in themselves to do art. I love to prove them wrong!! I also do some work for a terrific catering operation here on the island on the side. I like the immediate gratification of working hard for 7-8 hours and getting a check at the end of the night. you can immediately see the results of your labor and it's very satisfying.

Who do you admire (artist or otherwise)? Why?

holy cow, girl. you ask good questions. oh, I know this sounds canned and maybe even phony, but honestly, I would have to say that Michael, my husband, has been the greatest source of admiration for the last seven years. I have never known anyone to be so single-minded in purpose and resolve. there is nothing this man can't do and he is always ready and able to encourage the best from me, too. honestly, I don't think I would be doing art if it were not for his kicking me in the butt. he is my best cheerleader and example!

What tips would you have for someone that
is just starting out?

show up in the studio. do your work, no matter what you think of it. work everyday, even if it's just organizing, priming a canvas, reading an art book. network! meet others in your field of interest. go to every gallery opening and art exhibit you can. read everything, look at everything, take art classes galore and NEVER GIVE UP!!!

Start off by telling us about yourself...

I'm Jessica, the me of meandmomscrafts. I am married to the most wonderful man on the planet for nearly 12 years now but we've been together for nearly 15 years! It was definitely love at first sight! He is extremely supportive of my crafting and is always willing to help me with it whether it be loading and unloading all of my things for craft shows to giving me his opinion on my newest creation. Together we have two beautiful children. A five year old little girl who is very interested in crafting with mommy and a little 5 month old baby boy whose creative talent has not been seen quite yet but give him time!

When did you start doing your craft and how did
you get into it?

I've always loved to create. Art class was one of my favorites in school. I think I was probably in my early 20's when my mother taught me to crochet. She had always crocheted while I was growing up. Her grandma had taught her. I someday hope to teach my daughter as well. One time when we asked her what she would do when she was 10 her answer to us was, "Crochet." I have also learned other crafty traits just by experimenting on my own and am always willing/wanting to learn even more!

Where do you get the ideas for your creations?

Some of them my mother and I come up with together. Some we think of on our own. Some are ideas given to us from buyers at craft shows we have participated in. We are always trying to think of new things to create!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Why?

In 10 years I hope to still be home creating but it will depend on what life throws us. I may be back to work full time since my children will be in school by then. If back to work then I definitely hope to still create in my spare time. As my grandpa would say, "Only time will tell." Now if myself or someone willing to share with me wins the lottery then I will just be crafting, crafting, crafting! Oh, and shopping, shopping, shopping!

If you could start over with your business is there anything you would do differently?

Besides maybe starting to sell my creations sooner I think I am happy with the way everything turned out. It all works well for me at this point in my life. Why change a good thing? I enjoy what I do. My mother enjoys it as well. We both love the idea of people out there using what we have made!

Do you work at your art/craft full time or do you have
another job?

No, I don't work or craft full time. I create in my spare time. Being a wife and mother come first and foremost in my life! My husband and my children are my world!

Who do you admire (artist or otherwise)? Why?

I think I would have to say it would probably be my grandpa. My grandma's mother used to quilt all the time and when she past away none of the women in the family wanted to pick up quilting so he did in order to keep it in the family. He still uses quilting pieces that she had cut when she was alive. I have boxes full of them too that I someday hope to turn into quilts for my family.

What tips would you have for someone that is just
starting out?

I've heard of so many shops wondering why they have no sales right away and asking what are they doing wrong. Don't get discouraged if it seems to take off slow. Have confidence in yourself and your work! Things don't happen overnight but you can accomplish whatever you put your mind to. Rome wasn't built in a day you know!

Start off by telling us about yourself...

I am a self taught photographer living in Denver Colorado. I grew up in Virginia, right outside DC, but moved here to Denver 4 years ago. I love it here because its not only a beautiful place to live, there is a ton to do all year around and there is some amazing photography. I am also a mom to 2 young children and the wife of a loving husband.

When did you start doing photography and how did you get into it?

I have loved photography for as long as I can remember. I started taking photography classes in middle school and high school with the goal to be a photographer later down the road. But, for some reason, I took a long break from photography. I think college, and life in general just got in the way. But 3.5 years ago, my daughter was born and I got back into photography again. In this last year, I have really discovered that I love fine art photography. I especially enjoy taking up close shots of flowers and then creating a paining like quality to the print in my digital darkroom.

Where do you get the ideas for your creations?

I read some great books on macro photography. I also play around a lot. Both with the way I take my pictures and while I edit. I am always trying to be different and come up with an image and style that someone hasn't seen before.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Why?

I really hope that my photography business is my full time job. But, the fact that I started this business in the first place is a huge dream come true. I get a lot of joy and excitement when I am taking and editing pictures. Nothing means more to me than to have others enjoy my work as much as I do. I will be over the moon if in 10 years people still want to buy my images!

If you could start over with your business is there anything you would do differently?

At the moment, I am not sure. My business is still very young - I just started it this year. Since starting my business, I have realized that I would like to offer more than just prints of flowers. So, I am working really hard on more landscape photography.

Do you work at your art/craft full time or do you have another job?

I work at my photography part time right now. I am also a stay at home mom to 2 young kids. My son is 2 and my daughter is 3.5 years old. I tend to edit my photos at night once they have gone to bed or take pictures of flowers while they are taking a nap or playing in the yard.

Who do you admire (artist or otherwise)? Why?

I admire Ansel Adams. What an amazing black and white photographer. I don't think there are enough good things to say about his work. His work makes me strive to be better. When I take landscape shots, I always think of his work and wonder if it will measure up to his quality.

What tips would you have for someone that is just starting out?
Ask lots of questions, practice, practice, practice and don't be hard on yourself! There are a lot of great books out there to learn from such as Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. It takes lots of practice to get better and not every picture has to be perfect, but you will get there!
