Brazil Perform Great Escape to Win Confed Cup

Brazil defended their Confederations Cup title on Sunday with a crushing come-from-behind 3-2 victory to inflict a cruel loss on tenacious underdogs the United States.

The five-time world champions looked out for the count after Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan put the Americans two up at half-time but they bounced back with a Luis Fabiano brace drawing them level with 16 minutes left.

It set the scene for an exciting finale and captain Lucio made it a memorable night with a powerful header from an Elano corner with six minutes remaining.

The victory sparked wild celebrations on the bench with Brazil now having won a gruelling seven games over the past 20 days - five at the Confederations Cup and two in World Cup qualifying.

It was their third Confederations Cup crown following triumphs in 1997 and 2005 and coach Dunga was a happy man.

"All the players were very concentrated on what needed to be done. I told them at half-time that we needed an early goal and to play the game we play. We wanted to win. We were very determined," said Dunga, the World Cup winning captain from 1994.

"It is difficult to overcome a 2-0 deficit but if you have committed players who always want to win then it is possible.

"If we can win this we can do much more in the future. I believe in these players."

Brazil had won 14 of their 15 previous encounters with the US and beaten Bob Bradley's men 3-0 in the group stages. But since that match the US fortunes changed dramatically.

After trouncing Egypt 3-0 to sneak into the knockout rounds on goals scored after finishing equal of points and goal difference with Italy, they shocked European champions Spain 2-0 in the semi-finals.

But their luck ran out against Brazil.

"That defeat really hurt," said Bradley.

"I'm extremely proud of my players, but it still feels pretty lousy to let this one get away.

"I hope though that people around the world see we have good team and great players and it is a big step forward."

On a cold winter's night, his giantkillers began in an attacking mood with Fulham's Dempsey making the first attempt on goal with a long distance strike that fizzed wide.

Brazil started feeding the ball to Maicon on the right and he lofted several crosses into the box that put the US under pressure before Real Madrid's new signing Kaka, the man-of-the-match, glanced a header wide.

But it was the US who stunned Brazil after 10 minutes.

West Ham's Jonathan Spector fed Dempsey with a defence-splitting through ball and the number eight cleverly put his shot under the diving Julio Cesar.

Brazil immediately charged back with Robinho attempting to angle a side-footed shot past Everton stopper Tim Howard but the United States kept up the pressure and Dempsey went close once again.

It was end to end stuff and Felipe Melo forced a fine save from Howard before the US pounced again with a lightening quick counter-attack.

The dangerous Landon Donovan picked the ball up in his own half and found the sprinting Charlie Davies on the left.

It was two against two and the US came off better with Davies returning the ball to Donovan who crashed it into the net after 27 minutes.

Brazil looked hard for a way back but Howard was a rock and they went to the break needing something special.

Fabinao provided it seconds after the restart when he caught the US napping, turning well from 17 yards to beat Howard and get his team back in the match.

Maicon had two good opportunities to draw them level as Brazil pressed with searching passes into the US box, while Kaka saw a header go agonisingly close when Howard pushed the ball onto the bar.

The US had lost composure and it was a desperate rearguard action with the equalisier inevitable. It came when Kaka crossed from the left and Robinho's shot hit the bar only for Fabiano to meet the rebound.

Brazil were on a mission and it was no surprise when Lucio bagged the winner to break American hearts.

Earlier, Spain clinched the third-place playoff 3-2 in an extra-time thriller against South Africa with unsettled Liverpool star Xabi Alonso netting the winner.

Real Madrid Offer 32 Million Euros for Benzema

Real Madrid have offered 32 million euros for Lyon striker Karim Benzema after switching their attention to the France international from Valencia forward David Villa, Marca sports daily reported on Sunday.

Marca said the French have yet to respond to Real's offer but last week Bernard Lacombe, adviser to Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas, told Marca that "nothing is impossible and if we receive a good offer we will not close the door to anyone."

Lyon's director of communication Olivier Blanc said merely that "the only news is Real Madrid contacted Olympique Lyon a few days ago to discuss Karim Benzema."

"Benzema and Olympique Lyon confirmed his initial desire is to stay another year with Lyon," Blanc said, adding that was also the club's preference.

Manchester United are also admirers of Benzema but Real have decided to swoop now given the reluctance of Valencia's new chairman Manuel Llorente to sell them Spain striker Villa.

Real chairman Florentino Perez, who has already landed Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka this summer for huge fees, has twice met with Benzema's agent Karim Djaziri, first in Madrid then Geneva, Marca reported last Wednesday as the chase hotted up.

As well as a cash deal, media reports in Spain say Real and Lyon could look at a part-exchange in the shape of either Real's Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar or his compatriot, winger Arjen Robben.

Eto'o Mulling 'Stratospheric' Man City Offer

MADRID - Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o is considering a "stratospheric offer" that could make him the best paid player in the world, according to the Spanish club's president Joan Laporta.

Asked in a radio interview about interest from Premier League club Manchester City, Laporta said the Cameroon striker would find it hard to refuse an offer he also described as "enormous".

"He has a stratospheric offer from another club that would make him the best paid player in the world," Laporta told radio station iCat FM.

Laporta added: "It's becoming clear that he has an offer that's enormous. I believe he wants to stay and I'd like him to ... but an offer like this is very hard to turn down."

Barcelona are negotiating with Eto'o over a possible extension to his contract, which runs out next year.

Manchester City, owned by Abu Dhabi billionaire Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan, have already spent big money to sign Gareth Barry and Roque Santa Cruz for next season.

Barcelona are interested in Valencia forward David Villa while Laporta said a deal for the 20-year-old Keirrison of Palmeiras was close to being agreed.

Alonso Free Kick Gives Spain Third in Confederations Cup

RUSTENBURG - Spain secured third place at the Confederations Cup on Sunday when Xabi Alonso curled home a long-range free kick to give them a 3-2 win over hosts South Africa after extra time.

Alonso's 107th minute effort evaded both his own strikers and the home defence to settle a thrilling match that produced several twists.

South African substitute Katlego Mphela forced the game into extra time with a ferocious free kick at the end of 90 minutes, having put the team in front in the 73rd.

Goals in the 88th and 89th minutes from Daniel Guiza had put the European champions 2-1 up heading into stoppage time.

Chilean playmaker Luis Jiménez has joined West Ham United FC on a one-year loan from Italian champions FC Internazionale Milano, pledging to do "everthing possible to do a good job for the club".

Contract option
The London club will have the option of signing the 25-year-old on a permanent basis when his loan expires next summer. Jiménez moved to Italy to join Ternana Calcio in 2002, and had spells on loan at ACF Fiorentina and S.S. Lazio before a third temporary move led to a permanent deal with Inter. However, after a successful loan spell in 2007/08, last season saw the player – nicknamed 'The Wizard' – hampered by injuries. The 20-times capped international said of his new challenge: "I can't promise anything but I am going to everything possible to do a good job for the club."

Nakamura Joins Sahar at Espanyol

Spanish side RCD Espanyol have agreed a two-year deal with Celtic FC's Japanese midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura the day after signing Israeli striker Ben Sahar from Chelsea FC.

Scottish success
The 30-year-old Nakamura will sign terms with Mauricio Pochettino's side subject to successfully completing a medical early next month. Nakamura is leaving Celtic as a free agent after a fruitful four seasons with the club where - along with scoring 29 goals in 128 league appearances - he collected three Premier League titles, a Scottish Cup and two League Cup winners' medals and was named Scottish Player of the Year in 2007.

The former Reggina Calcio player will team up with new Espanyol signings Joan Verdú and Ben Sahar at the Parakeets new stadium in Cornella de Llobregat. Former coach Carlos Alberto Parreira promised to introduce South Africa to 'samba football', a mission pursued by his successor, Joel Santana.

Well at Ellis Park on Thursday the willing pupil will have the chance to test precisely how much they've learned when they take on the country who invented the concept.

The smart and not so smart money is on Brazil overpowering South Africa in this Confederations Cup semi-final to set up a dream final Sunday with Spain, favourites to beat the United States on Wednesday.

But this 2009 Confed Cup has been nothing if not unpredictable - witness the USA's advance to the last four at the expense of world champions and African champions Italy and Egypt.

South Africa owe their presence here to having narrowly shaded Iraq on goal difference to emerge as Group A runners-up after goalless draws against the Asian champions, a 2-0 win over New Zealand and a 2-0 loss to Spain.

Brazil strode imperiously through Group B, following up the last minute 4-3 victory over Egypt with 3-0 drubbings of the USA and then astonishingly Italy.

That has left Kaka and company in prime shape to defend the title they collected in Germany four years ago, but South Africa are counting on their vibrant and colourful support and some class acts like Everton's Steven Pienaar, Bernard Parker and Teko Modise to help them dethrone the five time world champions.

The last time the hosts and holders met was back in 1996 in Joburg when South Africa, with Lucas Radebe and Doctor Khumalo on board, were leading a Brazil side captained by Dunga two nil at half time only to go down 3-2.

Santana, constantly criticised in the local media for his defensive tactics, is talking a big game ahead of what promises to be an electric encounter at a sold-out Ellis Park.

"We deserve to be in the semi-finals, we got four points," said the Brazilian.

"We outplayed New Zealand. We beat them 2-0, but could have scored six while Iraq were totally negative.

"I am happy to be in the semi-finals, I could have been heading home. But now I am looking forward to a major semi-final of a big FIFA event."

Dunga rates his compatriot highly as a manager and is wary of the threat presented by his team.

"South Africa are an emerging team, but we know they will give us a difficult test.

"They're strong, quick and they will have the crowd behind them. But we'll be well prepared. Brazil have a very strong squad, which helps in a tournament like this. Every player in the squad is a first-teamer."

Brazil Wary of Over-Confidence

Brazil could be forgiven for regarding South Africa, a team ranked 70 places below them in the world rankings, as easy fodder in Thursday's Confederations Cup semi-final.

But if that was the general opinion in the Brazilian camp it certainly wasn't showing as coach Dunga, Kaka and company prepared for their last four date with the hosts at Ellis Park on Wednesday.

"It's always difficult to play the host country, they'll be especially motivated, that gives emotional support to the host team," observed Dunga, who as a player was coached by his South African counterpart Joel Santana.

"He knows what he's doing," Dunga said.

The Brazil boss added: "South Africa have improved from game to game, but we're ready for the challenge.

"They must be respected as they've made it through to the semis. South Africa are a competitive team with African characteristics - they are very fast and strong but we'll play our football and try to block their positive aspects."

Former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva, a regular in the side that is coasting through World Cup qualifying, echoed his coach's comments on the need to be alert to the dangers posed by Santana's Bafana Bafana.

"For South Africa it's a very important game playing against Brazil. We need to be focused, we don't want to be surprised by them.

"We can''t start looking at the final, we've got to win this first."

Brazil the holders are unbeaten since arriving in South Africa with wins over Egypt (4-3), and 3-0 wins over the United States and world champions Italy.

Fast-Talking Santana in Attack-Mode for Brazil

If South Africa play as well as their coach Joel Santana talks then Brazil are in for a hiding in Thursday's Confederations Cup semi-final.

The Brazilian was in loquacious form at the eve of match press conference at Ellis Park on Wednesday, handling questions as deftly as a seasoned ANC politician.

After speaking eloquently about the honour of meeting Nelson Mandela earlier in the day, Santana assured Bafana Bafana fans that South Africa would turn out against the five-time world champions with one thing on their minds - attack.

"It's impossible to go out and defend for 90 minutes against Brazil," he stated.

"We're going to take the game to them. We might lose but we'd prefer to lose honestly playing attacking football.

"We learned a lot in the 2-0 defeat to Spain, now we are facing almighty powerful Brazil. We are going to try and at least match them as much as possible and to play football as beautiful as theirs.

"Not to be afraid is important, we want to produce a spectacle."

Earlier Santana had overseen his troops' final training session at Johannesburg's Rand Stadium, the Brazilian barking out instructions in 'engluese', his sometimes hard to decipher but charming mix of English and Portuguese.

After a training game lasting half an hour, Santana called over the team's security officer, possibly the largest man in the world, to get him to clear the stadium as he put the finishing touches to his masterplan to beat Brazil in secret.

Striker Bernard Parker failed to complete the session after picking up a minor knee problem and the forward who scored both goals in the 2-0 win over New Zealand is uncertain for Thursday's game.

He is due to undergo medical tests later on Wednesday and on Thursday before a decision is taken on whether he will be fit enough to face the five time world champions.

Later at the press conference Santana then tackled the question of divided loyalties in leading South Africa out to play his native country coached by a man he used to coach.

"Note this, playing against Brazil is a professional occasion, South Africa has accepted me and given me an opportunity to coach the national team for the Confederations Cup and next year the World Cup.

"It's a historic moment facing Brazil, I know some of the Brazilian players personally but the important thing is we are going to do our best against one of the top teamms in the world.

"I thank South Africa with a lot of humility for giving me this chance," said the man who played against Pele in a previous life.

Captain Aaron Mokoena said there was an air of excitement in the Bafana Bafana camp.

"We're expecting a very very tough game but for the players it's an exciting moment. We've been waiting for this game for a long time."

Mokoena was part of the South Africa team that beat Brazil 3-0 at the Olympic Games in Sydney nine years ago and he revealed: "I spoke to the boys last night about the feeling of beating 'the giants'. For sure tomorrow is different, Brazil want this badly, but so do we."

US Celebrates Huge Confed Cup Victory over Spain

Brilliant tactics helped the United States pull off a stunning 2-0 win over Spain and reach the Confederations Cup final, something coach Bob Bradley described as huge.

A first half strike from Villarreal's Jozy Altidore and another 16 minutes from time by Fulham's Clint Dempsey did the damage on Wednesday in what will go down as one of the biggest victories in US football history.

They also had a flawless performance by Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard and a commendable defensive display to thank for earning them a shot at the trophy on Sunday against either Brazil or hosts South Africa.

"When you play Spain you certainly have to work very hard as a group to defend. We made a special point to close down Xavi as best we could to prevent his penetrative passes," said Bradley.

"We felt strongly that when we got the ball we needed to be aggressive and have the confidence that we could keep the ball and move it.

"We did a very good job of sealing down the middle of the field. Our backline did very well. It was a team effort to just try and make sure our defending was good and look for moments to score."

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque admitted his side were outfoxed.

"We faced a team that played with good energy, was good in attack and was fast. We were surprised. The entire team was very dangerous for us," he said.

"We are in the world of sport and it was a strong rival and I cannot be unhappy with the effort made by the team. We did everything we could."

It was a remarkable upset on a freezing night that not only ended Spain's record of 15 consecutive wins but also prevented them from surpassing Brazil's 35-match unbeaten run.

Spain will have to be content with going into the history books level with the South Americans after their first loss since November 15, 2006.

"For us it's a big night, huge," added Bradley.

"We're excited to be in the final and when you're there you have chance to win. The motivation will be very high."

Spain had won all three previous encounters but the United States' miracle run to the last four, qualifying on goals scored after finishing level with Italy on goal difference, showed they could not be understimated.

Spain had the first chance of the match but the US weren't sitting back and Charlie Davies sent a spectacular bicycle kick flashing just wide.

With Dempsey firing a long range drive close soon after it was clear they meant business.

At the other end Cesc Fabregas sent a cross in from the left which Fernando Torres volleyed just past the post.

They combined superbly again shortly after with the Liverpool striker forcing a fine one-handed save from his Merseyside rival Howard.

But in a major shock the US took the lead on 27 minutes when the powerful Altidore muscled past Joan Capdevila and Carles Puyol with Iker Casillas unable to prevent his shot finding the back of the net.

It was only the third goal Spain had conceded in 16 games.

Spain were in trouble but bounced back with a hatful of chances with Torres and Sergio Ramos in the thick of the action only for heroic defending to deny them.

They went to the break losing 1-0 and in need of something special.

David Villa almost provided it soon after the restart when he let rip from just inside the box but Howard turned it round the post.

They threw all they had at the Americans but captain Carlos Bocanegra and his defensive partners held firm and against the run of play they scored a second.

LA Galaxy's Landon Donovan sent a cross in from the right and errors by Gerald Pique and Ramos allowed Dempsey to hustle the ball over the line for a famous victory.

Brazil and South Africa play their semi-final on Thursday.

South Africa face a worrying 24 hours to find out if striker Bernard Parker will be fit for Thursday's Confederations Cup semi-final against Brazil.

Parker picked up a minor knee injury in training on Wednesday and is due to undergo medical tests later on Wednesday and in the run-up to kick-off.

Coach Joel Santana reported: "Bernard had a slight problem and he was advised not to continue training.

"He'll be having check-ups to see if he is able to play. It'll be a shame if he doesn't take part tomorrow (Thursday) as he's a new and spontaneous talent."

The Red Star Belgrade forward has been instrumental in getting South Africa into the last four with his two goals sinking New Zealand to help the hosts take the runners-up spot in their group.

That brace was sweet redemption for Parker after he unwittingly blocked Kagisho Dikgacoi's goal-bound header in the 84th minute of the opening 0-0 draw with Iraq.

The winner of Thursday's game will play the victor of Wednesday's semi-final in Bloemfontain between Spain and the United States.

Real Madrid after Benzema rather than Villa

Lyon striker Karim Benzema is the latest object of desire for moneybags Real Madrid as opposed to Valencia forward David Villa, Marca sports daily reported on Wednesday.

"Nothing is impossible and if we receive a good offer we will not close the door to anyone," Bernard Lacombe, adviser to Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas, told Marca.

The daily said Real had been mulling signing Benzema, of whom Manchester United are also admirers, in a year's time, but changed tack given the reluctance of Valencia's new chairman Manuel Llorente to sell them Spain striker Villa.

Benzema would cost around 40 million euros or less if the deal were to include a part-exchange in the shape of either Real's Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar or his compatriot, winger Arjen Robben.

"We take Valencia at their word and we respect their decision (not to sell Villa) and so that is why we are changing target," Real director general Jorge Valdano said Tuesday, without naming Benzema.

Marca indicated Real also have made a combined 35 million euros offer for Liverpool's Spanish pair Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa.

And the paper added that Real are additionally ready to swoop for Valencia defender Raul Albiol.

USA Size Up Spain Ahead of Confed Cup Semi

The United States are upbeat that they can pull off a major shock and defeat European champions Spain to move into the Confederations Cup final.

Coach Bob Bradley is realistic enough to know his team face an uphill battle against a side unbeaten since November 2006, but has belief in his players ahead of their semi-final here on Wednesday.

"We're excited, the team is on a high," he said.

"We understand the challenge of playing Spain. From a technical standpoint, they are so proficient. But it is a chance for us to test ourselves and perhaps get to the final."

If the United States do the unthinkable and win, it will go down as one of the most important victories in American football history.

Bradley knows the stakes are high.

"If we are able to win it will be so important. Right from the start we have talked about growing and shooting higher and now we have an opportunity to get to the final," he said.

"It is the right kind of experience that we need and all we can do is go for it and hope that our best can take us to a new level."

The United States are unexpected semi-finalists after beating Egypt 3-0 on Sunday while Italy lost by the same margin to Brazil. It allowed Bradley's team to stay in the tournament on goals scored after finishing level with the Azzurri on goal difference.

They have no injury worries going into the game with Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard set to start after Brad Guzan was given a chance against Egypt.

Their only concern is Rennes defender Carlos Bocanegra who has been carrying a hamstring injury but is now back training.

Bradley acknowledged the danger posed by Liverpool striker Fernando Torres and the ingenuity of Barcelona's Xavi in midfield, and said his team must go out and play their own game.

"When playing a team like Spain we are challenged to be good on the ball, and we have to put their defenders under pressure and create chances," he said.

"It will take a good game plan but also full commitment from the players."

Landon Donovan, David Beckham's teammate at LA Galaxy and the United States' all-time top scorer, said the team had the ability to give Spain a run for their money.

"Considering they haven't lost in a very long time against quality opponents, the challenge is very difficult," said Donovan, who will captain the team if Bocanegra fails to recover.

"However, we believe in ourselves and if we play well then we have a chance to win the game. That's our intention and we'll go out with a good game plan and try to get the job done."

Messi Tops Ronaldo as World Star - Study

Cristiano Ronaldo may be the world's most expensive footballer, but Barcelona star Lionel Messi outshines him in terms of media value, at least according to a team of Spanish researchers.

The team from the University of Navarra said the Argentine had ousted the Portuguese striker as the player with the highest profile last season.

However, Ronaldo remains the most expensive player, with the researchers valuing him at 82 million euros, less than the world record 93 million Real Madrid paid Manchester United for him this month.

Messi was next at 80 million, followed by Liverpool's Spanish striker Fernando Torres at 67 million.

The study cited Barcelona's European Champions League victory, and Messi's goal in the final, for his leap to number one in the media rankings over last year's winner Ronaldo.

It forecast "an exciting media fight between these two brilliant players" next season.

In team rankings, it recorded a "technical tie" between Barcelona (86.2 points) and Manchester United (86.0 points).

But the manager with the most media pulling power was United's Alex Ferguson, ahead of Barca's Pep Guardiola.

Del Bosque Wary of Improving United States

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque insisted on Tuesday the gulf between his team and Confederations Cup semi-finalists the United States was not huge and they must be wary.

The former Real Madrid boss, who has helped steer Spain to a record-breaking 15-match win streak, said he respected Bob Bradley's team who have upset the odds by making it to the last four at the expense of Italy.

"We have a less strong rival in front of us (than Italy) but we must tackle it in a sporting spirit," he said ahead of Wednesday's match in Bloemfontein, where the temperatures took a tumble on Tuesday.

"I don't think we are that much better than them. They are physically and tactically strong and they can make life difficult for us."

Regardless of what Del Bosque says, Spain are overwhelming favourites to make the final on Sunday against either Brazil or hosts South Africa.

They won all three of their group games, scoring eight goals and conceding none to match Brazil's record 35-game unbeaten run.

Del Bosque was not prepared to look beyond their semi-final when asked to comment on playing Brazil for the trophy.

"We have a clear rule - we believe in going from one match to the next," he said.

"It's been mentioned here that we had a weak group but it took us a lot of work to win. We must always be aware that we have a rival that can create fatal difficulties for us.

"We can be happy with what we have done in the group stage but it will be meaningless if we don't take the title.

"Of course all our victories will go down in history, but we have to look forward and not backwards."

The 58-year-old has been busy analysing videos of the United States and pinpointed LA Galaxy star Landon Donovan and Fulham's Clint Dempsey as capable of causing his team problems.

"In midfield and in attack they have strong players," he said.

"They like to attack. Donovan is very good and Dempsey is strong at headers and in set pieces."

"On Sunday against Egypt they played with a central midfielder who we did not know (Charlie Davies) who played well so we must really watch out for this opponent."

Barcelona midfielder Xavi, widely seen as the star of the tournament so far, warned that the pressure would be on Spain as favourites, with most people expecting them to coast through.

"We accept the role of being favourites but perhaps there is more pressure on Spain than the Americans because of this," he said.

"I've seen the United States and they are rather strong. Their football has been evolving, they've improved their attacking skills, they have talented players and they will not be an easy opponent.

"We may be favourites but it won't be an easy match."

Spain to Keep 'Beckham Law' on Taxation

Spain's ruling Socialist Party on Tuesday withdrew its support for a motion that would have ended the so-called "Beckham law" under which foreign footballers receive tax benefits.

The Socialists had earlier agreed to support a move by the IU-ICV, a coalition of leftist and Green parties, to introduce the measure "to curb the abuse of taxation privileges of elite footballers."

The law, first conceived to aid foreign business investment, allows foreign footballers playing in Spain to be taxed on only 24 percent of their income, instead of 43 percent for other Spaniards in the same income bracket.

It is popularly know as the "Beckham law", after English footballing icon David Beckham, who was the first to benefit after his arrival at Real Madrid in 2003.

But Socialist Party spokesman Jose Antonio Alonso said later on Tuesday that it was withdrawing its support for the motion to end the "Beckham law" due to IU-ICV's decision not to back the government in a budget vote next Thursday.

The Socialist Party does not have an absolute majority and must rely on smaller parties to pass legislation.

The IU-ICV had called for the "Beckham law" to be withdrawn after the news of the world record 93-million-euro transfer fee paid by Real to Manchester United for Portuguese striker Ronaldo earlier this month, and the player's reported annual salary of 12 million euros.

Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero had described those amounts as "excessive."

Hull 'Serious' about Owen Interest

English Premier League minnows Hull insist they are serious about trying to lure Newcastle striker Michael Owen to the club, according to reports.

The 29-year-old has said he wants to leave the Magpies following their relegation from the Premiership.

Owen is believed to be the subject of interest from several clubs in the UK and in Europe and would have a price tage of several million euros.

But Hull manager Phil Brown said they will be talking to representatives of the former Liverpool and Real Madrid player this week in a bid to secure his signature.

"I don't think Michael will go for the best financial offer," Brown told the Hull Daily Mail on Tuesday.

"I don't think it's about that for him at this stage of his career, he'll want the best offer for his future," he added.

Hull escaped relegation from the Premiership last month after finishing fourth from bottom, one point above Newcastle.

Cannavaro Lashes Out at 'Oldies' Jibes

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro has hit back at recent criticism of the reigning World Cup champions, which has focused on the team's largely veteran status in the wake of their Confederations Cup flop.

Marcello Lippi's side beat the United States 3-1 but were then shocked by Egypt 1-0 before Brazil hammered the final nail in their coffin with a comprehensive 3-0 thrashing on Sunday.

Italy missed the semi-final stages on goal difference, and have been widely labelled as underachievers.

In Italy that criticism has mainly focused on the fact that seven of Lippi's starting 11 against Brazil were aged 30 or more, with captain Cannavaro almost 36.

However central defender Cannavaro said it was time for the criticism to stop.

"Let's bring an end to this theory that we're all too old," said Cannavaro, according to the Ansa news agency.

"I'm getting tired of it. Personally, I'm available to play and it's up to (coach, Marcello) Lippi to decide."

Lippi has been criticised at home for persisting with his "old men" rather than handing a chance to the plethora of young talent he has on hand, but he defended his tactics.

"You speak so much about young people - what young people," said the 61-year-old, back in charge since Roberto Donadoni's departure after Euro 2008.

"You don't throw youngesters into these matches, you have to put them in gradually.

"We have youngsters but they need to mature. The best players in Italy you have seen right here on the pitch."

Media reports suggest several players in their 30s risk losing their places in the run-up to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, for which Italy have still to qualify, with defenders Gianluca Zambrotta and Fabio Grosso, and striker Luca Toni among the names cited.

But Cannavaro, for one, isn't worried.

"I'm not just here because I happen to have lifted the World Cup trophy (in 2006)," said Cannavaro, who has recently signed for Juventus from Real Madrid.

"Everyone remembers the seven matches we played at the World Cup, and, compared to those, apparently I'm still playing badly.

"But like Lippi, I think that the players who are in the team are the best players that Italy can offer right now."

Italy sit top of qualifying Group 8 but Ireland are keeping the World Cup winners in their sights. Only the group winners qualify automatically for the tournament, with the second place finishers proceeding to the play-offs.

And that will pave the way for Manchester United to make a £35million bid to bring the France international (above) to Old Trafford.

ESPN Win Premier League TV Rights

US broadcaster ESPN last night won a £90million contract to show 46 live Premier League games next season.

Espn, owned by Disney, picked up both packages which were put up for auction by the Premier League yesterday after they were taken away from Setanta.

And in a separate deal, they also won the rights to screen 23 games for three seasons from 2010 in what is a double blow for Sky.

Setanta's deal for next season's package was worth £131m but the troubled Irish broadcaster has already paid £40m, so Premier League clubs will not be affected by yesterday's auction.

Sky have long feared ESPN bidding for Premier League rights as the US giant represents a huge threat to their domestic dominance.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said. "ESPN have a formidable worldwide reputation and I am sure we will enjoy a long and fruitful relationship."

Setanta will have a crunch meeting today but it is likely the broadcaster will be forced into administration.

Arsene Wenger believes his new-look Arsenal side will be less predictable next season - and far more powerful.

The Gunners boss - who has just signed £11million defender Thomas Vermaelen - has revealed he will tie up the rest of his transfer business before pre-season training starts so all his squad are fit and ready for the new season.

Felipe Melo of Fiorentina and Udinese's Gokhan Inler are just two of the stars being lined up to add steel to the Emirates midfield while in attack Wenger has an embarrassment of riches.

The Frenchman says that the side that struggled to finish fourth last term will be far more difficult to figure out. And Wenger even hinted at a far more attacking role for speedy Theo Walcott, who stunned Spain last week in the European Under-21 Championship.

Wenger said: "Next season we will play the formation and system that most suits the players and the balance of the team.

"That means it's not rigid. It can evolve throughout the season, depending on circumstances and personnel.

"If you play with Theo Walcott for example, you are more tempted to go for three midfielders because Theo is more of a forward than a midfielder in a 4-4-2."

While Cesc Fabregas has been making overtures to Barcelona then denying them, Wenger remains confident he can keep hold of all the players he wants.

He added: "We lost Hleb and Flamini last summer and we have had to rebuild. But we have done that now and the future looks bright. We don't want to have to rebuild again so I want to keep all the players together for next season. I don't want to lose anyone.

"I want to add to the squad and I have identified one or two targets. But identifying players and buying them are two different things.

"Ideally I would like to bring everybody in before we start back in pre-season training in July. I don't want to leave it until the end of August."

Manchester City are spending a fortune on top players in their bid to break into the top four.

And Tottenham are also prepared to pay big bucks to land some of the quality players being jettisoned by Real Madrid.

But Wenger has called on Arsenal fans to keep faith in his methods.

He went on: "We are at a stage where we need to convince people that this team does a lot of things right. It does not need to be transformed. When you go on a long unbeaten run in the Premier League and reach two semi-finals, common sense should tell you that.

"We have to take encouragement from what we have done in the season just gone.

"I am fed-up with people who think I have £100million in the bank yet don't want to spend it. How can people think that? "The pride of the club is in having moved to a new stadium while maintaining the club at the top level.

"The policy of the club is that they have backed me in what I do and the way I do it.

"We now have to be strong enough to stick to that. We cannot pump £100m into it, so we must keep faith in what we are doing."

Chelsea Appeal Champions League Punishment

Chelsea have appealed against the punishments handed out by UEFA following the club's Champions League semi-final defeat to Barcelona, the governing body confirmed today.

UEFA fined the Blues £85,000 for the improper conduct of their players and missile throwing by their supporters after the match at Stamford Bridge.

Striker Didier Drogba was banned for six European games, two of them suspended for two years, while defender Jose Bosingwa was banned for four matches, one suspended.

UEFA revealed a date for the appeal will be announced in due course.

The Blues had been expected to appeal the punishments so today's confirmation by UEFA is no surprise.

Ivorian striker Drogba was given a six-match ban for his foul-mouthed confrontation with referee Tom Henning Ovrebo while Portugal defender Bosingwa labelled Ovrebo a "thief".

Referee Ovrebo was at the centre of controversy after rejecting four Chelsea penalty appeals during the second leg of the semi-final.

Chelsea were leading through Michael Essien's early strike but Andres Iniesta's late away goal gave Barca a place in the final, where they beat Manchester United to win the trophy.

Drogba's foul-mouthed rant at the official was seen by millions of television viewers, as he directly addressed a camera on the side of the pitch. He later apologised for his behaviour.

If the appeal is unsuccessful the ban will rule him out of most of the club's Champions League group stage next season.

Roque Santa Cruz Completes Move to Manchester City

Roque Santa Cruz has completed his £17million move to Manchester City.

The Paraguayan passed a medical with the Eastlands outfit this afternoon and has now signed a deal to link up once more with Mark Hughes, his former manager at Blackburn.

Hughes has never made any secret of his desire to have Santa Cruz at City and having assured themselves the knee injury that kept the South American out at the end of last season has fully cleared up, the Blues have completed the signing of the striker.

Santa Cruz becomes Hughes' second major signing of the summer, following the arrival of Gareth Barry from Aston Villa last month.

Despite the improvement of Felipe Caicedo during the final few weeks of last season, City were desperately in need of a senior striker to bring the best out of Steven Ireland, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Robinho, who continues to be linked with Barcelona.

Having brought the 27-year-old from Bayern Munich during his Blackburn days, Hughes knew exactly what Santa Cruz could bring to him team and after missing out on the player during the last two transfer windows, was quick to make contact with Rovers counterpart Sam Allardyce with another offer, which this time was accepted.

Although he managed just four Premier League goals last term, the memory of his 23 in 43 appearances during his first season at Ewood Park is still strong and Santa Cruz is expected to clock up a third World Cup finals campaign with Paraguay next summer.

Argentine Tevez Leaving Manchester United

LONDON - Unsettled Argentina forward Carlos Tevez is to leave Manchester United, the Premier League champions said on Saturday.

Tevez, 25, whose "economic rights" are owned by agent Kia Joorabchian, left West Ham United for Manchester United on a two-year deal in August 2007.

He spent much of last season on the bench and his last appearance was as a substitute in the 2-0 Champions League final defeat by Barcelona in May.

A statement on the club website (www.manutd.com) said United had agreed a fee of 25.5 million pounds ($41.71 million) and offered a five-year contract which would have made Tevez one of the team's highest-paid players.

"Disappointingly, however, his advisers informed the club that despite the success he has enjoyed during the club's most successful periods he does not wish to continue playing for Manchester United," the statement said.

Joorabchian responded by saying money had never been an issue and the club had not given Tevez enough time to make up his mind.

"When United made their offer about 10 days ago, for the first time in two years, we never went back to them to ask about money," Joorabchian told Sky Sports News.

"We just asked for some time to think about it. Obviously they have had two years to think about it and Carlos had to make a decision based on his family.

"Just to make it clear, this has been Carlos's decision. Nobody else would make this decision for him.

Joorabchian ruled out a Tevez move to United's arch rivals Liverpool and told Talksport Radio that "Manchester City and Chelsea probably would be the two clubs that are on the table".

There will be no issues over who owns the player's rights in future, with his next deal expected to be a permanent one.

Joorabchian said: "The Premier League have changed their rules now, when you do make a transfer it has to be a permanent transfer.

"All his rights will be sold, all his economical rights will be sold and he will belong to the club he will play for."

Tevez caught Manchester United's eye by scoring at Old Trafford as West Ham avoided relegation by winning 1-0 in the final game of the 2006-07 season.

In his first campaign at Old Trafford he scored 19 goals and was a vital cog in a side that won the Premier League and Champions League double.

Tevez netted a total of 34 goals in 98 appearances for Alex Ferguson's side.
