style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Well Folks, I believe the time has come when I must bring my blogging to an end. I am finding many things to be too burdensome to maintain, or even continue to consider maintaining, and this blog is one of those things. As optimistic as I attempt to remain, the real world keeps smacking me in the forehead with a 2 x 4. I can now officially say I "GET IT!"

I must apologize to anyone who does read this blog for my lack of keeping it current or of a viable edutaining experience. It appears I have the ideas I would like to share and as I proceed through the process, the smallest idea somehow turns into a major project, eating up a tremendous amount of time and energy for me. You see, I used to be very effective working things out on a computer, because I always maintained the attitude I was not going to let this technological bastard beat me. I find now, projects such as the creation of my book would be impossible because I no longer can remember how to use the software. It now takes me four or five times as long to do the simplest thing on the computer, because even if I performed the action or created the document a few days ago, I must relearn how to do it all over again.

Ironically, the people at DELL Technical Support say I am my own worse computer virus because I can so screw things up that were once very simple operations and they have yet to come up with an anti-virus for me, myself and I. I look at a project today and have no idea how I accomplished it just a few days ago. I no longer have the energy or interest to relearn the necessary information to continue forward. Many things I used to love to do are no longer containing any joy in them for me and more dread than anything else.

I've seen a couple of new medical specialists within the last couple of months and the response is always the same. They've maybe read or heard about situations such as mine, or in the 30 years of their practice they have only seen three other patients as bad off as I am at this point and there is nothing they can do for me. No worries, I can and have accepted that kind of thinking for many years now. I no longer deal with doctors who try and BS me and want to use me as a Ginny pig trying all kinds of tests at different universities. Sorry Dude! Those days are long gone.

This shall be my final post on this blog although I will leave the blog up for archiving reasons. I have no idea if any one is even reading this blog but if they are there must be information of value and benefit to them. I've reached the point where I continue to fight the battles, day and night, even though the war is already lost and the outcome determined, all outside of my control. It's a tough situation to watch the expression on your doctor's face realizing how frustrated he is there is nothing left for him to do but keep me comfortable. I expect it is also professionally frustrating he can't do what he has sworn an oath to do, but science does not have all the answers.

To those who have read this blog, it is my sincere desire you've gotten something of value and benefit from the experience. At least now you have a published book to obtain and read even more details, should that be your desire. I thank you for you time, patience and tolerance of me over these years and in dealing with the unexpected each day, my desire is; "May Peace be with you, may you discover yourself and exercise your God given right to be yourself regardless of the herd mentality, ignorance and intolerance that exist out there today."

Farewell to you, all my friends.

With Sincere Gratitude and Appreciation,

Craig Mattice

Polite Tuxedoed Handicapped Robber Caught in the Act

Today, a well-dressed handicapped man in a tuxedo, riding a 3-wheeled power scooter, was caught in the act of robbing a local credit union while attempting to make his get-a-way. The very polite robber requested assistance from the teller to load the money in several bags for him with a “please” and “thank you.” He proceeded to politely ask for assistance to carry the money bags to his car and to have someone hold the doors open for him so he could leave the building.

Police arrived arresting the well-dressed and polite robber as he was receiving assistance by an employee of the credit union loading his scooter in the trunk of his car. Another employee had placed the money bags in the back seat and was holding the driver's door open for him. The robber thanked everyone including the arresting police officer for their assistance, shaking their hands and apologizing for their inconvenience.

Upon going to court for his arraignment hearing the judge found the polite well-dressed robber guilty as charged. However, since it took such a long period of time from the actual possession of the stolen money to his arrest, due to the physical challenges and obstacles required to overcome prior to his arrest, the judge sentenced him to time served and he was released. As the robber left the courtroom and with a big smile, he politely thanked everyone involved including the court reported, shaking their hands and apologizing for the inconvenience he had caused by not getting away in a more expedited manner.

Film at 11! ........... or NOT!

Of course I made this entire story up, but I had fun doing it and since nobody reads my blog why not post it for grins and giggles?

2013 "NOW" is the "Time to Live Life on Your Own Terms!"

2012 is gone, history and nothing you can do about it, but learn from it and move on to the best of your abilities. You know what you want to do in your life, but are you willing to pay the price? That is the difference between success and undesired results, vs. failure. If something doesn't work to reach your goal, try something else. If that doesn't work, try something else. There are no limits to the number of times you can try to successfully attain your goals. Trust me, nobody is sitting there and counting.

We just finished celebrating a wonderful family Christmas here at home with all of our kids and grandkids. None of us knew if this would ever happen again, but it did and it was worth the price. We all know time is growing shorter so everyone is making that extra effort to squeeze in more time as a family together. This Christmas had nothing to do with giving gifts rather creating memories for everyone, including me. This is what life is all about and it's not the stuff Madison Avenue is trying to shove down our throats. When was the last time you actually saw a Macy's Day Thanksgiving Parade? Can't remember? Of course not, because now and for the last several years it has become nothing more than a two hour infomercial with very few glimpses of the parade.

This Christmas experience was just another example of reaching a goal I had set for myself. All the while not knowing if I would be here to participate. In true Craig Mattice form, and thanks to my life insurance company expending the funds without the requirement of my personal death, Joyce and I are 30 days away from leaving on another Princess cruise. We planned to take this cruise almost 9 months ago, against doctors orders and best concerns, followed by him saying, "But life is short, I'll sign the forms and you guys go and have a wonderful time." We are taking the Caribbean Princess from Fort Lauderdale to Aruba, back to Princess Key and returning to Fort Lauderdale. A full seven day cruise and mostly at sea. I will go if it kills me. (No pun intended.) This will give you an idea of what's ahead for us.

As you can see this is neither a huge ship nor a small ship carrying about 2,200 passengers. We found on our cruise from Los Angeles to Hawaii and back on the Golden Princess, the ship is a perfect size to carry that many passengers and crew while being quiet intimate in meeting several new friends.

At the present time we have no intention of shore excursions, but rather to totally enjoy all the benefits of the shipboard life as the ship is the destination for us.

We have almost a full 30 calendar days to prepare everything and deal with all of the upcoming doctors' appointments to receive the results of these many tests and evaluations taken this last month. There is some optimizm by these specialists that there are things they can do to make my life more tolerable and comfortable. That's always good news to hear and I admit, they have all been very forthright and upfront with us on what to expect. Now that is refreshing in itself.

In closing, I've decided to change my tactics regarding checking the bottom of my foot each morning and looking for that Martin's Grocery blue ink stamp with an expiration date. Now, should I find such a stamp on my foot, I will immediately attack it without mercy using a Mr. Clean bleach stick and scrub like crazy to get that thing off. I think that's a good plan, don't you?

Health Challenges Affect My Frequency of Blog Posting

As I've mentioned before, I really don't know that anyone even reads this blog and don't blame them because it is so infrequently updated with any posts. I take full responsibility for this and must pass on some updated information for a better understanding why this occurs. In fact, I'm having to write this with my right eye closed to be able to see the text. I'll explain in a moment.

My health challenges have become more progressive with many unexpected effects, which of course impact every area of my life. I'm lucky to post with some continuity on my facebook page and allow me to point out, those who read my facebook posts might find this reading highly redundant.

Due to some new complications, my personal doctor has referred me to a Pulmonologist for shortness of breath and decreased lung function, a sleep disorders specialist for intensive evaluation after continued snoring and I stopped breathing causing my wife to physically rouse me to take a breath. These symptoms happen even with the use of a CPAP machine to assist my breathing and sleep. In the mean time I've just had major eye surgery with the removal of a cataract from my right eye, in which I was shot back in the '70s causing considerable residual trauma complicating the surgery. My involuntary movements necessitated the use of general anesthesia which is unique.

The recent eye surgery went very well with excellent results, per the eye surgeon. That's the good news. The bad news is the almost three hours it took post-op in recovery to come out of the anesthesia. On several occasions, not only was I not waking up, I stopped breathing completely even with additional medications to help me come around. I came within 10 minutes of their deadline if not recovering to send me to the hospital. Luckily the anesthesia team was somewhat prepared for this difficulty after my situation in recovery from my ruptured bicep surgery. My stopped breathing on several occasions caught them off guard as it had not happened after the previous surgery.

At this time with comprehensive testing pending later in the month, it appears my respiratory system is beginning to shut down becoming weaker over time. I am optimistic these tests and specialist will find some way to assist me further in maintaining as normal a lifestyle as possible for as long as possible. The final results are already known, yet we continue to fight the battles as they present themselves. Only time will tell. As my personal physician likes to quote, "Doctors prescribe but God decides." So true my friend, so true.

Thanksgiving How Far Have We Come? A Time of Reflection

Post Brain Stem Stroke 2 Weeks

Thanksgiving Holidays, a time to seriously reflect on how far we've come as individuals asking ourselves what has made us the person we are today? The next questions include, are we better people for it or not, are we serving those around us or focusing totally on our own agenda? When asking personal reflective questions are we answering to get through today or finding answers to impact our eternity? I don't know, but these are questions I've been dealing with personally due to recent events in my life.

A couple of important areas in my life I am seriously evaluating are my spiritual beliefs, foundation and direction. How am I benefiting my fellow man through my words and actions? When my journey takes me beyond this earthly plane, what impact will I leave on others and how far will it extend? I bring these questions up because in my case the reflection has taken me back to December 2008 when I suffered a near fatal brain stem stroke. It's funny because my wife, Joyce, says I will never have any conception of how close I came and how far I've come since that event.

In an effort to allow others to fully understand this concept, please allow me to share three very short videos I made at that time of my life. My desire is for others to share the impact of a life changing event, which actually changed me as a person and looking back, was the foundation for the writing of my book. Possibly viewing these personal videos will provide an opportunity for some to view their life with new perspectives never before considered. All I ask is one ponder their own circumstances, placing one's self in this same situation, ask the same questions, especially what could be done now to make a major positive difference in one's life?

Video #1 was completed just two weeks post stroke while learning how to use a brand new video camera given to me by my son. Video #2 is a couple of weeks later during progressive recovery and video #3 is 66 days post stroke. After viewing these videos ask yourself what differences you see, especially if you knew me before and then after this life's even. Be thankful for the blessings one has this holiday season, share your feelings with those close who make a difference in one's life sharing your feelings and thoughts with them while they may still appreciate it and you.

Video #1 - 1/1/2009
<div class="separator" To which, I endeavor not to share my personal political views, one way or the other, regardless to whom I'm speaking. I've learned one cannot convince another to a different way of thinking when both parties firmly believe they are right. Neither will, nor intend, to yield their position to the other.

Reflecting on the events of the recent month or two involving television and social media, neither of which do I participate very strongly, I simply have to shake my head. What little I've allowed myself to observe begs the questions, do people not make up their own minds without the input of the news talking heads, the ever changing polls and self appointed political pundits? Allow me to also point out the kindergarten recess antics of both political candidates and their supportive parties. Compounded to the ridiculous, by the free reign of the PACs and their big unaccounted money contributions. I certainly cannot leave out the incessant political robo-calls and surveys on my telephone at all hours.

In light of my personal observations and reflections on the current "trending," (I've come to hate that popular term), political events in our country, I've created four simple 'photo-quotes' to express myself without becoming politically polarizing. Yes, many of you might have seen these posted on my different facebook pages. I don't believe that takes away from the message they contain for those who are open enough to receive it. So please, indulge me for a short time and allow me to express my non-polarizing political points for your enjoyment, attack, comment or deletion. Don't ya just love a free democracy with freedom of expression?

You may know I refuse to play the PC (Political Correctness) game or share my personal political views. I do believe and hold true to the original tenants of these United States and believe every man is responsible to make his own political decisions, without relying on the media talking heads, pundits or others. I find this quote to be representative of my situation.

In keeping with the observations of our political process most recently, I found this quote to be ironically prophetic in its nature and absolutely true today. This begs the question, how have we allowed such a solid democratic system, involving the selection of the most powerful person in the world, leading the most powerful country in the world, become a process akin to a board game similar to Shoots and Ladders?

Many are feeling the same frustrations regarding how ineffective Congress has become. It demonstrates nothing short of a political cancer. No longer are members representative of, by and for the people of the these United States. Yet "WE" are the only ones who have the power to make any changes.

Finally, the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights are the foundation of our democratic society, yet they have been allowed to become corrupt, drawn off course of their original intent. Respecting these foundational cornerstones of our county, others have their right to express themselves as do I. As with anything, a tolerance level must be set and one must present a decision to those who are harmful dissidents.

I choose to actively participate within the democratic process by exercising my right to vote, making up my own mind with responsibility as to who I believe is the best candidate, yet without the undue influence of others. I do my own research as best I can, which has become much easier with the Internets availability to information. Whether one agrees or disagrees with this post or my position is perfectly acceptable. I may not agree with your opinions or conclusions, yet I shall fight to the death your rights to express them.

"What's next in your life?" Now, The Rest of The Story!

Do you recall my last post, where my professional counselor asked me, "So Craig, what is the next thing you are going to do in your life?" My decision was to do something I've not done for over six years; physically getting to and swimming in the ocean, maybe even swim with the dolphins once again, to taste the saltwater and smell the ocean spray? The real challenge and objective was to physically DO IT! I accomplished my objective in spite of my health challenges and a bonus photo of me with a dolphin. In life we must determine the true priority vs. wish of "that would be nice." Oh, by the way, I was shocked to realize I could not smell the ocean spray and worse, could not taste the salt water; two more effects of my brain disease and degeneration. Now Folks, allow me to continue with Craig's Ocean Swim After Six Years of Can't for The Rest of the Story. OK! Not just yet, listen to this.

I had to walk down from the 11th floor to the steps down from the boardwalk to the beach. The approximate distance from the boardwalk to the water is over 100 meters in the soft sand. After walking for 10 minutes, I made it to the tidal line and having a hard time standing up. Without crutches, the noise, moving water, the force of the water and my feet telling my brain something opposite of what my eyes are saying at the same time; I enter with the grace of Captain Jack Sparrow after a hard drinking night. It seems to take hours to get to deeper water. I'm already exhausted trying to stay vertical with everything going on at once. Finally, deep water and the struggle required exceeds my expectations and I'm trying not to drown. Unable to catch my breath, complete body and muscle fatigue, fighting the waves, current, no footing, I try to fight my way back into shore.

Now for The Rest of the Story, I mentally chose to accept a challenge, made a decision and took positive action to get back into the ocean, regardless the cost to me. The process was overwhelming physically, quickly exhausting, unable to breath, painful but I pushed on. I made it into the deep water, quickly realizing how my deteriorated ability and power of the sea were grossly unmatched. Yes, Joyce took photos of me going in and coming out for the record.

Me swimming with 2 dolphins

Here is the "reality" of this entire scenario? There were no dolphins in the area during my adventure. The photo is a composite, not to fool anyone but make a point. Now that you know there was no dolphin did I fail? Was the challenge to be with a dolphin or swim in the ocean after six years? Each person will have to make their own decision rather l failed or succeeded. To me the dolphin would have been nice, they were out three times that day, but they were not the purpose.

According to many I exceeded expectations, to others the dolphin was a trick and yet to others the effort a total failure. In reality the dolphin was not relevant, because I not only accomplished my objective, it is more important that I took the challenge face on with action and did my best rather than doing nothing at all. Doing nothing at all, now there in would be the failure and only there. Allow me to refer you to the Theodore Roosevelt quote shared by a good friend of mine, Dan Meyer as it says it all. Your conclusions are your own either way.

The credit belongs to the one who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, Who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again, Who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause; Who at best, knows the triumph of high achievement; and who at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, So that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls, who know neither victory nor defeat ...

~Theodore Roosevelt

And know you know The Rest of The Story.

So Craig, What do you really want to do next in your life?

Just Hang'n Out

This was a question posed to me by my professional counselor. My first thought was, what the heck kind of question is that to ask somebody in my circumstances. Then she qualified it further saying, within my current abilities not if I were normal. It always concerns me when a professional counselor starts using the work normal around me. Heck! The only thing normal is my house is the setting on our dryer. Funny, as I quickly thought about it, I realized I haven't had time to even consider such a question. I mean, why? Really? What is the purpose? My 24 hour periods are spent in survival mode, dealing with sleep-wake disorder, sleep deprivation, severe symptoms, strong narcotic pain medications, whose side-effects are more times than not worse than sucking it up and dealing with the pain. That is a two edged sword with a no win ending.

More recently I've been progressing into "mini-comas," which come on unexpectedly hitting me with a huge wave of instant exhaustion. I described it to her as being at the beach and you can get through dealing with each of six waves, but normally they come in groups of seven and it is like having your back to the ocean, not paying attention when that awesome seventh wave hits. The power is overwhelming, slamming you to the bottom and tumbling you around uncontrollably, only with this you don't come up laughing and smiling from the experience. Rather, you are forced to stop whatever you're doing and go to bed.

What happens then, you ask? Here is where the "mini-coma" becomes insidious as I've been unconscious for up to 28 hours straight. I'm talking totally unaware of anything, not getting up to hit the bathroom, much less drinking water or taking medications on schedule. I finally "come around" due to severe pain and the beginnings of withdraw from not taking medications on schedule topped off by being completely dehydrated become painfully apparent.

This all sounds wonderful, however I have now lost 28+ hours of time comprehension, believing I had laid down for only a few hours. Feeling the severe hangover affects are similar to being run over by a locomotive, these effects last up to 36 more hours before I'm back on line. 36 hours to get back on my medications schedule building them back up, recovering from dehydration, disorientation, cognitive challenges, while still completely exhausted. Regardless the type of or length of sleep I get the results are never refreshing. For those wondering, yes, I also have severe sleep apnea and must use a CPAP machine to breath and keep pressurized air going into my lungs.

You know its bad when your doctor instructs your wife to check on me at regular intervals, take my vitals, count my respiration rate and basically insure I'm still alive. I can say this, after this progressive and prolonged disease, the brain stem stroke and everything else related to my wife becoming a caregiver now, she would really be pissed off if I died in my sleep. Enough medical history. I wanted you to have an understanding of what my daily life consist of on a 24/7 basis.

Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins

I continued to think about this question, what do you really want to do next in your life? My counselor explained how I've already surpassed most people by para-sailing, climbing a dormant volcano in Hawaii, attempting to Zip-line the jungles of Kauai, bungie jumping from 140 feet, what's next? I would very much like to hang glide and I don't mean the wimpy dunes of North Carolina, but rather Grandfather Mountain in Tennessee or El Capitan at Yosemite Park. I know that won't happen, because I can't get up there to get started. So I've decided when I go to the beach soon, I will actually make it to the water's edge versus staying on the boardwalk and go back into the ocean. Something I've not been able to do for over six years. Maybe even in the very early morning to swim with the Dolphins once again. Hey! I might even be able to taste the saltwater and smell the ocean spray. That would be great. Yea! That's my next thing I want to do. Well, I guess we'll all see pretty soon. In the meantime I'll keep counting the waves and not turn my back to the ocean.

Question Not When One's Path Crosses Another, Discover the Meaning

In many ways the internet is a blessing and a curse, all depending on how one applies its abilities, the benefits derived as a result. Through the use of the internet I have met many wonderful people I otherwise would never have had contact. The use of the Facebook program has allowed me to become reacquainted with so many old friends as far back as high school. Allow me to share just one of these almost magical experiences.

As a result of being a published author and reconnecting with high school friends on Facebook, I find the experience interesting in that many of us speak only of the 'old days,' while others of us appear to have specific reasons for our life's paths to be crossing again, or for the first time, through this medium. Being a believer there is a reason with meaning behind my path crossing with that of another person, at a specific time in our lives, creates some very interesting experiences for both of us.

I 'happened' to friend an individual whose name I recognized from high school several months back. He graduated a year ahead of me and we really were not in the same social circles at that time. He was aware I was a published author and initially we discussed some ideas regarding a book he wanted to publish including different options. Throughout this process our relationship grew and we both realized even though our journeys through life were very different, we had a great deal in common with both of us clearly realizing the meaning of our live's paths crossing at this particular time.

Richard with his constant
companion, Missy

This gentleman's name is Rick Marcopulos and his published author name is Richard Adair with a book titled, Poems In Early Recovery: "Comparing In." Yes, it is a collection of free flowing poems sharing his experiences of family loss, alcohol addiction, his recovery efforts and strong involvement with his local 12 Step Program. Rick literally opens and shares his soul through these poems covering a full spectrum of emotions, experiences, and insight. Please, do not prejudge his book by the title believing it is simply written for and about addiction, alcoholism and recovery. The reality, I learned very quickly, this book's poems relate to all people in some important manner, enough so there is a strong positive impact on the reader even though they are not involved with addiction or early recovery.

Recently, I had the privilege of having Rick as a guest in my home for several hours and the experience was nothing less than amazing. Our connection was immediate, even though we had not talked or met in over 40 years. A true gentleman, which initially scared me to death because first, he writes poetry and second, shows up at my door with a beautiful bouquet of flowers in a vase. I was greatly relieved to learn they were intended for my wife. Our conversation covered a wide range of subjects, experiences and insights on life, resulting in our discovering we had a great deal in common. These types of human encounters are rare in today's society, primarily because people do not communicate with each other, rather 'at' each other. I feel this relationship will grow to become life long, especially in my situation.

The simple Reader's Digest summary is Richard's book will cause one to contemplate the meaning of life as it applies to their own situation, reveal the thoughts of new options, resulting in possible changes in perspectives on life and how they are living. This fine book of poetry is one which each time read, new perspectives and insights will be revealed based on where the reader is on their journey at that particular time. Trust me, the discovery of new revelations and insight are very exciting alone. Open one's self up to the poems of Richard Adair, discover how to change your life by becoming more attentive in experiencing life. Not by simply making a living, but rather by designing a life you choose.

Never Judge A Book By Its Cover or Title: NO! Really!

I was given the distinct privilege and honor to receive and review a book written by an individual I attended high school with many years ago. He and I have just recently become reacquainted via our connections through Facebook. In fact, we had discussed briefly my process in writing and having my book published a little over a year ago, while he was researching the best path to accomplish the same for his book.

I knew nothing of what the book would be about and then I saw "IT." Yes, I mean the proverbial "IT." What is the "IT" you ask? The word I have hated since my exposure to "IT" while in high school English class. The operative word here is ..... is .... OMGosh, I'm choking just trying to write it out .... OK, "IT" is POETRY. There, I got it out. I hate poetry, don't understand poetry, hate to read poetry and besides being reared in a typically male dominated environment, poetry is a sissy thing.

The book came in the mail very quickly and the title is, Poems In Early Recovery by Richard Adair. We also know him as Rick Marcopulos, a man who owns his own successful business, is of strong and good character and strong spiritual bearing. The kind of man who will give you the shirt off of his back just for the asking, doing so expecting nothing in return. That was my impression of Richard, until I read the back cover of his book and the Forward. WOW! Was I ever shocked, yet very quickly even more impressed with my friend after reading what his life had actually entailed over the last 40 years.

After starting the book I shared with my wife how I just don't "get it" when it comes to poetry, leaving it at that. I had committed to read the book and personally decided regardless of the outcome I would write an honest review of it on Amazon.com. After experiencing a couple of very tough days, and nights, dealing with my own symptoms, I sat down one very early morning about 2:00 AM and read the entire book. To share just a glimpse of my resulting reaction, allow me to quote from my Amazon.com review. I gave the review a title of, This Book Initially Fools You, Until Realizing It's You in The Book, going on to say ..... This is no normal book of poetry, which I will be the first to admit, poetry in any form is not my thing, mainly because I don't "get it." Well folks, I can attest before you right now, while reading this book, Poems In Early Recovery: "Comparing In", "I Get It!" I was amazed in reading many of these wonderful, heartfelt poems, applicable to life's experiences, the author was speaking directly to me.

In essence that is the bottom line of this well written, thought provoking and very personal book of poetry; it is all true, based on actual experiences, raw human emotion, striking a cord with me on many levels in a totally unexpected manner. I have since dog eared and yellow highlighted the poems with special meaning to me and struck that cord resonating with to my own life. Allow me to point out these poems come from the heart and we all know, speaking from the heart with deep emotion, there is no spell or grammar check. I think that too makes this book even more real and Richard shares this with you at the very beginning.

I wanted to share this rare reading experience with you and my desire is you too will obtain your own copy, dog ear the heck out of it and color it with a yellow highlighter of your own. I believe you will read this book now, garner many pearls of wisdom and enlightenment, come back and reread it a second, third and fourth time asking yourself how you missed so many more pearls of wisdom in the previous readings? Simple answer my friend, you were at a different point in your life's journey and were not ready for them to be revealed. Enjoy the experience through Richard's eyes and learn about yourself through this discovery.

Discover the Results of Asking, "How Should We Feel About God and Going to Church?"

Things are not always as they appear
when dealing with faith.

In attempting to obtain the insights of people in very diverse situations, more specifically those people dealing with chronic and/or severe health circumstances, I took this search one step farther. I posted a very similar question on health specific forums to obtain additional points of view and current insights on this subject by people in my similar situation. The conversations have all been very interesting and quiet diverse in their responses.

Allow me to mention the specific professional health forums and provide you with their links to allow you the opportunity to visit and read the details of their responses, getting a good feel for the course of the conversations which took place to this date.

NeuroTalk Support Groups: http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/forum102.html

According to the current forum statistics these numbers represent the activity: 41 Replies 738 Views.

BrainTalk Communities: http://braintalkcommunities.org/forumdisplay.php/81-Multiple-Sclerosis

According to the current forum statistics these numbers represent the activity: 19 Replies 282 Views.

MSWorld Forums: http://www.msworld.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=3

According to the current forum statistics these numbers represent the activity: 33 Replies 821 Views.

I would like to note, during these conversations on these forums, everything was discussed in a very honest, polite and respectful manner without the typical arguments initiated regarding whose religion is better, right or wrong. I found this too surprised a couple of the Moderators, who posted their own observations. Now, let's look at this small 'snapshot' of data from these conversations. The questions and content were identical on each forum and included the question, Who Else Has Questions About Their Health and Spiritual Journey? As indicated above, the 'snapshot' statistics show during the actual conversation a total of 93 separate responses and replies were made as of this date. The greater impact appears to be the number of people who actually read the threads, yet did not respond and totaled 1,841 views. (These numbers are absolute raw data with no algorithms applied.)

In summary, I found many similarities in the respondents application of spiritual and religious techniques to cope with their challenging situation and circumstances. Also a great deal of diversification due to background, beliefs, religious rearing and physical capabilities. Yes, these respondents included life-long standard religious participants of several different faiths, agnostics and atheist. Reviewing the information presented caused me to look carefully at my own situation with a number of new ideas and changes in my personal perspective on how I should handle this situation on my own terms. The bottom line appears to apply to the term, "different strokes for different folks" and "whatever works best for the individual is best overall." No one stated there is a right or wrong way to apply these principles and the majority had open minds regarding their own situations. An interesting education and world of enlightenment for me.

A closing thought, perhaps open, nonjudgmental, honest, and sincere conversations among peoples of all faiths would make a tremendous difference in this world, versus the divisive use of religion as an excuse for violence and even war.

How Should We Feel About God and Going to Church?

I have been wrestling a great deal with my spiritual situation in relation to my health circumstances. Granted, I fully realize I am not unique or the the only one in the world on this type of journey. My sincere reflections on this subject have led me to ask this question, which appears simple in nature, but not very easy to fully address.

In light of my mortality, and still yet unknown expiration date, where should I be and how should I feel on my spiritual journey at this point of my life? I absolutely believe in God and my Christian faith as how I've been reared and experienced in life. The Bible is truly the instruction book of life, would people only take time to read and follow the principles presented. But this is much deeper than all of that. I realize there is an on-going war in the unseen world between good and evil and we are all each part of it, choice having nothing to do with our participation.

I therefore question, how should we feel about going to church, during the service and especially upon leaving church and returning home to face the challenges of our daily life? Do you know? If so, please share it with me, because right now at this point I don't have an answer, resulting in the feeling of a serious void in my existence. I would seriously like to know what creates and maintains the feeling of 'connection' between us and God on a daily basis, especially in light of the numerous and severity of each of our challenges? Again, do you know?

I keep an open mind, having no fear of asking these questions, the possible ramification or suffering any recriminations for questioning what many people will not talk openly about with others. As I write this with serious expectation of an answer, what do you believe, how do you feel about going to church and why do you feel as you do? Allow me to mention through my experiences in life I've learned to not ask God the ever unanswerable question of "why?" The reason should be very apparent, as there are things we should and will know and things never to be known. Asking the "why" question will not change things.

Again, how should we feel going to church? What should we get out of the experience and how should we feel upon returning home? What is and how do we create that "connection" with God we hear so much about? Honestly, I would like to know because at this time I have no answer and not much time to figure it all out.

SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE: I must apologize as in hind sight I now realize I have grossly confused the post by combining the questions of going to church and a personal relationship with God under severe and chronic health circumstances. They are not one in the same, but two completely different subjects. I have learned this through my conversations on several forums and desired to make the point clear in this post for the readers.

ADDITIONALLY: Do not let the Google Blogger system of leaving a comment intimidate you. Comments may be left in complete anonymity and I do not practice moderating comments as I feel people have a right to sharing their thoughts and opinions without oversight.

WARNING! I have included my final email response to them allowing you a greater understanding of just how dangerous their utilities software can be to your computer. They have absolutely no functioning customer service, none responsive or nonexistent technical support and damaging product, all of which can cause your computer to crash requiring a complete clean install of your operating system. BUT, they are willing to charge you for their "Premium Technical Service" for a total support solution. I call this bait and switch and I can imagine the quality of this service if my experience is any indication of their nonexistent standards of good customer and technical service.

This email was sent out this morning and you will quickly discover the reason for this article.

Dear “Alleged” Customer Care,

This email is being sent as a ! High Priority with Read Receipt Requested.

Upon receipt of this email from iolo announcing the new version 11.0.3, I was “cautiously optimistic” you (iolo) had actually improved and corrected previously existing problems with System Mechanic 10 and 10.5. I am still waiting on technical support’s response to my inquiries and severe computer problems resulting from System Mechanic 10.5, initially sent in April, 2012 including all sorts of follow up and data forwarded by your request for their review. I was forced to fully strip my PC of System Mechanic using Revo Uninstaller at DELL’s strong recommendation. A full Windows 7 OS repair and reinstall was required to get my PCs corrected, a 10 hour operation with each computer.

Now you send this email out of the blue with only a slight mention that those with an open ticket, technical support is still working on the problem. Really??? Are you serious??? So I took a BIG chance and did a full clean install of version 11.0.3 and after 9 hours was forced to fully strip it out .... AGAIN ... because of how badly is messed up my PCs in several areas. This product has progressively gotten worse unless you are a techno geek or enjoy beating yourself up wasting hours on end fixing the problems it creates. Oh! My original reported problems have not been fixed by this “alleged” newer version, but made things even worse.

Luckily I have found 3 FREE utilities software that performs more efficiently and at a safer level than the inane recommendations given to the customer by System Mechanic. What a joke! So I tell you .... AGAIN ... close my ticket or whatever and a REFUND of my $14.00 for renewing two days before this debauchery started originally back in April and I won’t consider this pitiful experience a total loss. But alas, I know you never had any intent on satisfying the customer only keeping your money.

BTW, your emails sent out to customers apparently do not have word-wrap capabilities as the sentences continue far off the right of the page causing one to use the slide bar at the bottom just to read the information. C’mon folks! There is no excuse for an alleged technical software company to do business like this. My saying so makes no difference, because no one will read this email anyway, much less do anything with the information or respond to me directly. This whole operation appears to be a bait and switch to make customers spend more money on your “Premium Support Services” (?) which after this experience would be considered grand larceny and fraud.

Remove my name and close any information regarding my account, because I’ve done the same with anything iolo or System Mechanic on my computers. My intent is to share my experiences on the internet through Facebook, forums and my blog to warn people away from your product, (non)service and company lack of performance in every category.

A TOTALLY Dissatisfied Customer,

Craig Mattice

NOTE: IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT YOU CAN'T READ THEIR FULL EMAIL BECAUSE IT RUNS OFF THE SCREEN/PAGE EVEN ON "SELECT ALL." YOU'LL GET THE IDEA...

Also, everything within the bolded italicized brackets [xxxx] are my personal edits.

From: iolo Customer Care

Sent: Tuesday, July 31, 2012 6:57 PM

To: xxxxxxx@comcast.com

Subject: RE: Major problem with System Me.. I've created 122 posts to which I've only received a hand full of comments. Why am I telling you this? Because I believe the time has come to seriously consider the value of this blog and my contributions as to whether they might benefit and be of value to others.

Evidently, people seem to get more out of my photos of our Hawaiian Princess Cruise and Mickey Mouse cookie jar and key chain than anything else. Granted, this is not a blog one can expect to find a new and interesting post every day, much less twice a month. I accept full responsibility for the lack of something of interest to read. Many more people visit my blog from overseas than within the United States, which I find interesting.

Even though I have written and successfully published a book, bringing everything I wished to share with my children and grandchildren upon my death, to an unexpected pinnacle of public interest. I have realized, or possibly accepted, the further degeneration and progression of my disease within the last eight months. I'm now experiencing what I term as "mini-comas" where I literally crash for up to 28 hours straight and once coming out of it, taking 24 to 36 hours to recover from the lack of fluids and medication. The concern is to the point my doctor has asked my wife to monitor me regularly during these "mini-comas" and check my pulse and respiratory rate to insure I am in no immediate distress. I think that's a polite way of saying, to make sure I'm not dead.

New cognitive challenges have arisen regarding my thinking processes, my wife saying my A+B is not connecting with C or even D. I sum it up saying many people say they no longer can connect the dots where as in my circumstances, I can't even find the dots to connect. I've attempted to get back involved in church and that has not worked out well because I never know how I'm going to feel right up until it's time to make a decision should I feel well enough to attend. Many times it's a question of whether I can even last through the service. Other attempts to get involved in projects have only reinforced my lack of reliability to stay or be involved regularly. I now tell people I am, "Commitment Continuity Challenged." Not as an excuse but simple a fact of life for me now.

Something I was thoroughly enjoying was assisting my neighbor in writing her first book. I've just recently had to totally relinquish my services to her in that area since it is just too much to deal with at an acceptable standard. I no longer am very active on Facebook, partly because of the constant changes they make without notification, I'm just not able to keep up and it is no longer any fun. Now I may post every couple of days if that much and check it once every other day or so.

OK! Enough of that because many will think I'm whining or complaining versus simply stating fact. My experience has been 50% of the people don't care or don't want to hear it and the other 50% are glad to hear it and that it's not them. So I ask, what is the point? At this time I have no reasonable answer to continue further as every day, and night, is a continuous battle and we all know the outcome of the war. There you go! That's the bottom line to keeping this blog or not. I would be surprised if anyone has read this far. No matter. I'll simply stick to our family motto, "Just go with the flow and pray God keeps me afloat." Peace be with you and thank you for stopping by for what might be the final post.

The BEST Inkjet Ink Resource I've Found, Happy 4 Years Now!

My personal "HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION" for an ink supply source, 'Ink It Up 4 Less, LLC' in Mulberry, Florida. I am not a lawyer, however, I do take full responsibility for my comments and opinions shared in this article. One may or may not agree with my findings, which I find completely acceptable. My desire is not to convince anyone one way or the other regarding the course of this case and the renderings of the U.S. Supreme Court, rather to simply share what I have learned.

The Supreme Court on June 28, 2012 rendered a decision regarding Xavier Alvarez's claims to be a retired Marine of 25 years and receiving the Medal of Honor for his actions during combat, which were determined to be wholly false. Alvarez was charged under the Stolen Valor Act of 2006. The decision was found in favor of Alvarez with his statements and claims falling under the First Amendment regarding freedom of speech.

Medal of Honor Marine Corps

The reporting of this case and the Supreme Court's finding is not what is appears, especially as and how, the story is presented by ABC News. It is my observation ABC News utilized the below title and opening sentence to grab people's sense of outrage vs. reporting the full truth and context of the case.

Allow me to share these few pertinent points of my statements above after reading both the article by ABC News and the full Supreme Court decision, UNITED STATES v. June 28, 2012 by Lee Ferran ABC News.

The first and introductory sentence states, "The Supreme Court struck down the Stolen Valor Act today, saying that the First Amendment defends a person's right to lie -- even if that person is lying about awards and medals won through military service." Yes, I felt the same outrage as anyone else especially being a veteran myself and regrettably responded in accordance to this sole article. However, upon reading the full Supreme Court decision consisting of 49 pages in PDF format, I found the following two paragraphs to sum up the true reality involved in the court's efforts to protect our First Amendment rights within the true focus of the Constitution vs. succumbing to the emotions stimulated by this case.

JUSTICE KENNEDY announced the judgment of the Court and delivered an opinion, in which THE CHIEF JUSTICE, JUSTICE GINSBURG, and JUSTICE SOTOMAYOR join.

Opinion of KENNEDY, J.

It is a fair assumption that any true holders of the Medal who had heard of Alvarez’s false claims would have been fully vindicated by the community’s expression of outrage, showing as it did the Nation’s high regard for the Medal. The same can be said for the Government’s interest. The American people do not need the assistance of a government prosecution to express their high regard for the special place that military heroes hold in our tradition. Only a weak society needs government protection or intervention before it pursues its resolve to preserve the truth. Truth needs neither handcuffs nor a badge for its vindication. (Page 17)

The Nation well knows that one of the costs of the First Amendment is that it protects the speech we detest as well as the speech we embrace. Though few might find respondent’s statements anything but contemptible, his right to make those statements is protected by the Constitution’s guarantee of freedom of speech and expression. The Stolen Valor Act infringes upon speech protected by the First Amendment. (Page 18)

I am not a lawyer, but if I understand what I have read correctly, The Stolen Valor Act of 2006 is simply too broad in its restrictions of what may and may not be said by any individual under any situation, thus not meeting the elements required to not be allowed under the First Amendment. Should anyone wish to spend the time reading the full Supreme Court decision encompassing the specifics, case law and strict application to the Constitution's First Amendment, results in a new understanding in what actually took place in this rendering. It still does not remove the emotions and outrage felt by people with respect to such despicable actions of impersonating a Medal of Honor winner and a retired Marine when the individual never participated in the military service. However, I prefer to have the proper and strict application of the Constitution's First Amendment for free speech applicable to all Americans than to succumb to emotion and allow determinations to blow with the wind of public opinion vs. the application of law.

Adding a New Member to The Family, REALLY?

Yes, it's true. We've added a new member to our family and it occurred on June the 2nd at 5:30 PM. We had long been expecting this, however, we were grossly unprepared for the sheer numbers by which our family would increase on that day and time.

Allow me to share the circumstances involved. You see, my son Jason married his fiance' Kathy Ellis on that day, so one would assume our family increased by one new member. Ah! But not so. It appears when a marriage occurs you not only receive a new member, but her entire clan comes along with her. I was not totally unaware of this situation happening with a marriage, but we are talking dozens of people here not just her mom, dad, brother and maybe a few other members. Between her immediate family, extended family and lifelong friends of the family, by sheer numbers they could have easily hastened the close of the Iraq war had all of them participated. Meanwhile our side of the family, although well represented, were suffering from this genealogical "shock and awe" from Kathy's side.

OK folks! Honestly, after meeting her family and learning how wonderful they all are, I can easily understand how Jason and Kathy must have immediately hit it off when they met. These two people are literally meant for each other. Ironically, Kathy's mom is a retired State Farm Life Insurance Underwriter and my wife, Joyce, has been with State Farm Insurance Claims for almost 28 years now. After Jason's first visit to, "meet the parents," staying at their home for a couple of days, he reported back to us it was just like coming home due to the strong similarities between the families. I don't know about you, but knowing my family that was a scary thing to even imagine. Another family like ours to the point Jason felt like he was home? Geez, what has he gotten himself into?

The Reader's Digest version of that entire weekend comes down to this. Kathy has a wonderful family, down to earth, easy going and a heck of a lot of fun to be around. This should give you a slight hint of the family's foundation in that Kathy's grandparents are the parents of nine, yes, that's (9) children. This somehow occurred while her grandfather was in World War II in the Pacific Theater, then became an 18 wheel truck driver while he with his beautiful wife ran a grocery store at the same time. I mean really. When did they, or especially she, have the time to have nine children? To top it off they are all fantastic owing it to the solid foundation and example set by their parents. This "simple" wedding was the most beautiful and enjoyable we had ever attended. I can't say enough about the smoothness of the entire event, everyone enjoyed themselves, the quality of the food and service were unbeatable and in the midst of all that celebration and partying we had to stop long enough for Kathy and Jason to get married. (Only a minor interruption for all participants.) Oh! Wait! Yea, that's right! That's why we were there.

I am still pondering whether Jason has gone to the light side or Kathy has come over to the dark side. Only time will tell. Below are a couple of photos from the wedding including one with Kathy standing between her mom and dad, one with me talking with her almost 90 year old grandfather, whom I could easily have spent hours in discussion, and finally one of Jason and Kathy. You tell me if you think they are happy or not? My greatest satisfaction is being able to attend my son's wedding and those of you knowing my circumstances understand why that was a concern. We are all so very happy and feel blessed to now have increased our family not by just one, but by dozens. Enjoy the photos as I'm sure you will get the feeling of how wonderful the celebration was when you see them.

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" Memorial Day includes those from all wars and conflicts and locations, all over the world. There would be no freedom had the brave not come first. Freedom is not free demanding a high price to protect and maintain. For all of those who paid the ultimate price and sacrifice, America remembers, honors and shall never forget. God Bless You and America!

Rather than writing about this time honored holiday of respect and honor, allow me to share it with you in the form of different images.

<div class="separator" The answer to many might appear to be very simple and it may be, however, it is by no means an answer which is easy.

I recently had surgery to repair a ruptured bicep muscle. All went well until the morphine wore off and I experienced pain at a level never experience previously in my life. Trust me here, I've had enough incidents where pain has become a regular guest in my life who refuses to go home. I am on a multitude of narcotic and non-narcotic pain medications daily due to my neurological disease symptoms. This pain was a completely new animal.

Reared in a strong military home, my training as a police officer, law enforcement, the many levels of training and experiences within the Army, depending totally on another human being has never been something I've even conceived much less thought I would ever experience. After this surgery I was subjected to exactly this situation, relying 100% on my wife to attend to my every need. I was unable to perform none of the daily living requirements without her help. Mentally, I could or would not accept this premise and fought it 24/7.

By the third week I had reached my limit. The impact was like that of being hit face first by a semi-tractor trailer. I was just finishing preparing to eat in the the kitchen and became totally overwhelmed, breaking down in uncontrollable sobs. Not from feeling sorry for myself and the abilities I'd lost, but just flat our pissed at the entire situation and not having a solution to evaluate, adapt, and overcome the challenges presented. My wife immediately came into the kitchen upon hearing my uncontrollable sobbing, as did both of my dogs who also knew I was hurting.

As best she could, my wife attempted to console me, give me hope, tell me it will be all right soon and making the observation of not knowing how I had lasted this long without reaching this point and encouraging me to simply let it all out. The feelings of total helplessness had stolen every definition of manhood I had be taught and trained over my life time. Simply taking a shower was a major ordeal since she had to wash me and dry me off. Thank God we were already established with all of the necessary handicapped assist devices or this ordeal would have been near impossible.

After this total emotional breakdown and release I felt considerably better while experiencing an epiphany at the same time. My mistake over all of these years, now brought to the for front of my existence, I had been trying to do everything myself. I didn't need anybody else. To recognize this and say I was absolutely wrong is an understatement. I realized "I" cannot do everything totally relying upon myself nor any other human being. "I" needed to accept the eternal fact of releasing my life and turning it over with the trust of never asking "why," to something, someone of a higher power. I am doing just that. Stepping out in absolute faith that God, or whatever name you choose, plays an absolute direct part in my life if only I would ask, listen and trust.

This is not an easy process by any means especially for someone of my type of character. I acknowledge I have the faith as a Christian to die for what I believe before ever recanting my beliefs. I have rescinded my resignation from my church of 24 years and become a member once again, I'm associating with those who have always been there to support me and are of like mind and belief. Granted, these are only simple and small steps but what a journey this existence will continue to be. Do I follow in blind faith? No. I question, evaluate while I'm learning when to listen to God and not listen to myself. My next goal includes reading more of the Christian Bible and prayer. Neither of which I have been very successful, yet with this new point of view or perspective, I think things will be different this time.

May Peace and Healing Health be with you and your family.

Are You "Courageous" Enough to Sign The Resolution?

I have a very good and steadfast friend, Paul Harvey, who always seems to be there when I need him whether I may know it or not at the time. He isn't a very 'good' man, but rather a truly 'great' man in his beliefs, words and actions. Just before I left for a week at our beach timeshare Paul shows up with a DVD movie I had never heard of exclaiming how I will love it. I trust Paul and politely accepted his offer of the DVD asking when he would like me to return it? He looks at me like I had no nose and says, "You don't have to return it, because I bought it specifically for you to have." There you go! That's the kind of guy Paul is and I love this guy.

The movie is called Courageous, produced By: Alex Kendrick, Stephen Kendrick, the tag line for the movie is Honor Begins at Home. The success of this Christian movie has lead to a book called The Resolution for Men and many other products and services, as the message is so strong. The movie is available just about anywhere DVD movies are sold with the main website ChristianCinema.com. I shall not go into great detail so as not to ruin the movie, which everyone will enjoy, Christian or not. It literally brought my wife and me to tears at a few points of the movie, and yes, the message regarding the responsibility of being a Father is very strong. I thought I had done well with my two grown children until experiencing this moving.

Please, allow me to share two absolute key elements of this movie with you, which may or may entice you to take advantage of this opportunity. As always, the choice is yours and yours alone, you will know more after reading the following.

<div style="font-family: inherit; class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 15pt; text-align: center;"> I WILL bless my children and teach them to love God

with all of their hearts, all of their minds, and all of their strength.
<div align="center" confront evil, pursue justice, and love mercy.

I WILL forgive those who have wronged me

and reconcile with those I have wronged.

I WILL learn from my mistakes, repent of my sins, and walk with

integrity as a man answerable to God.

I WILL seek to honor God, be faithful to His church, obey His Word,

and do His will.

I WILL courageously work with the strength God provides to fulfill this resolution for the rest of my life and for His glory.

As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Joshua 24:15

One would then sign and have it witnessed should they commit to this resolution. I realized how short I had fallen as a father for so many reasons. The following is a speech given at a church service on Father's Day which speaks for itself. I have done the best I can to correctly represent it in this post.

The Resolution – Who Will Speech

God’s Word shows us that God desires for every father to courageously step up and do whatever it takes to be involved in the lives of his children. More than just being there for them or providing for them, he is to walk with them through their young lives and be a visual representation of the character of God, Their Father in heaven.

Who will accept the responsibility of providing and protecting my family? I WILL!

Who will pray for, and bless my children to boldly pursue whatever God calls them to do? I WILL!

In My Home, the decision has already been made. You don’t have to ask who will guide my family because, by God’s grace, I WILL!

You don’t have to ask who will teach my son to follow Christ because I WILL!

These men have accepted the same responsibility and embraced the same privilege for their families by stating, “I WILL,” in accomplishing the points of this Resolution.

Who of you are willing to now stand up and take this responsibility in your family, accepting this Resolution by God’s grace, and say to all who can hear, “I WILL?”

I believe everyone gets a good indication of the power involved in this film. I would suggest further insight be obtained by visiting the website listed above because the movie's plot, acting, writing, twists and turns make it a fantastic experience.

I personally highly recommend all aspects of this movie and associated products. I would have been a much better father had this been available when my children were small and growing. The best description of this movie can be summed up in one very strong word, "POWERFUL!!!" You can't go wrong with this recommendation.

HAPPY EASTER!

"HAPPY EASTER" to "YOU!" The most blessed of all days has come. As it should be, we should all show the amazement, awe and absolute FAITH of a child. You will find this post to be very simple, but not necessarily easy for some people to understand, and that's fine too. The most blessed of all days has come. As it should be, we should all show the amazement, awe and absolute FAITH of a child. Just look into the eyes of this child to understand.

PEACE be with you all and your families on this Easter Sunday.

Ruptured Bicep an Experience No One Should Have to Go Through!

Allow me to start by sharing with you, I am dictating this using Dragon speech recognition software. To say this is a challenge is an understatement, primarily due to my dysarthria. Which means my speech is all messed up. I don't know if Dragon is teaching me, or if I'm teaching Dragon. Either way, neither of us has very much patience, so in this case, please excuse any errors because I'm not going to even bother to try to correct them.

I know the first question everybody has is how did you rupture your left arm bicep? In my office, my wife's desk is quite large with a hunch on top and it squeaks every time I walked on the floor, so I decided to fix it myself. I simply went over and tried to push it a few inches and evidently my muscles have deteriorated considerably with this disease. I suddenly felt like someone had hit me with a hammer in the crook of my elbow and heard a loud POP! I didn't notice any pain, but realized I must be in pain as I felt extremely faint and dizzy. I could feel and see my bicep roll up into my shoulder. My first thought was, boy, "Joyce is going to kill me for this one."

I was right. Joyce had no sense of humor when I told her upon her return from work. We scheduled to see the doctor that evening and were there for over two hours. Things moved pretty quickly after that, with an immediate orthopedic surgeon's, appointment within 48 hours. .The diagnosis was confirmed and an immediate decision to have repair surgery done ASAP. Due to my medical complexity, surgery was scheduled in the actual hospital, however, it was still an outpatient status and expected three-hour procedure.

All of the pre-admission testing came out excellent, so I was scheduled for the morning surgery that week. Upon checking in, they always ask you, "why are you there," and I delightfully informed them it was for a penile transplant. Needless to say after the laughter died down, we got to business. Due to my involuntary movements, the anesthesiologist chose to do general anesthesia versus a block, so I did not get a chance to actually watch the procedure like I have preferred. This next part was explained to me as I was unconscious, but it's still pretty funny.

The actual procedure only took three hours. They went up into my shoulder and had pull the bicep down and not only use one screw, but two screws to secure to my lower arm. (At least I did get screwed that week.) There were some complications in the recovery room as I was in there for four and-a-half hours and they were unable to bring me around. I understand the lady next to me asked the nurse, as he beat on my chest and shook me violently, if I was dead? He stated no, otherwise there would be all kinds of alarms going off. Obviously, since I am writing this now, I did come around to full consciousness. As I was being moved to step down unit, I asked the lady next to me what her name was and she said Janice. She asked why I was asking her name? I told her I like to know the names of the women I sleep with and since I had just slept with her for over two and-a-half hours, it was the polite thing to do. That immediately brought a big smile and laughter to her as well as the nurse, raising her spirits tremendously.

I must say, after the morphine wore off, I've been on a regular regiment of 850 mg of Percocet every four hours since discharge, which barely puts a dent in the pain. They always ask if your pain is from 1 to 10, 10 being the ultimate worst. I would have to say I was easily spiking 10 as solid as you could get for the first 72 hours. I've been living in my recliner and watching Netflix almost 24 hours a day since discharge. Thanks to Joyce being able to take care of me at home, it has made things tolerable. It appears she will only be here through Monday, as I have to take my first shower then and she needs to be here just in case. She will then have to return to work.

There you have it, the Reader's Digest version of what has occurred in my life over the last week and-a-half. I hope it answers quite a few of your questions. I greatly appreciate all of your prayers, comments, e-mails and messages of concern on Facebook. This experience has been a great confirmation of the title of my book, Evaluate, Adapt, And Overcome: Accept No Limits In Life, because that's all I have been doing since surgery. Next I have the luxury of looking forward to "physical torture," also known as PT. I will keep you informed on my progress and with gratitude and appreciation I thank you for taking the time to read this.

Accept the Unexpected Challenges of Life, It's Called Growth

A life without challenge is like a kite with no wind. For it is the resistance, adversity and head on challenge which give it the ability to soar in the sky. Life is nothing but a series of challenges, expected and unexpected, both should be welcomed as new opportunities to continue on our personal development journey through growth.

To bemoan one's situation or circumstances is to close one's eyes to the potential life has in allowing us to live to our fullest potential. After all, isn't that why we are all here? It surely is not to collect adult toys, big homes or any of the other trappings society has set the value of fools gold upon. Life, it's potential, purpose and fulfillment are all linked to our interaction with others. Regardless the current state of one's life, change is very possible would one only choose to change, make a dedicated solid decision to do so, followed by measurable consistent daily actions toward making that change.

Were this process easy, or even simple, the world would be in a much better place. However, the key to exploiting this major aspect of living life requires commitment, consistent dedication and most of all, the courage just to start. Many talk of it and their great intentions, yet by not starting, followed by positive actions, the result is simple folly and there is no progress. Allow the following example to demonstrate the points addressed. A young woman, married, with children in a job or career sucking the life out of her personally. Faced with both an unsatisfactory relationship and a stagnant career the choices are limited. However, the choices are evaluated, a decision made, action taken and soon enough she is living life on her own terms.

Consider all of the above and add to it a health challenge, either chronic or worse, sudden onset. The same process applies and the challenges can be met, albeit not without great courage and fortitude from within, all of which are determined by the individual. One who faces such challenges and proceeds through their personal journey in spite of them receives growth and wisdom invaluable to the fulfillment of the rest of their life would they not have had these challenges and met them head on. In the end they too will soar as does a kit in an almost unlimited fashion. Finally the question to be addressed for each individual, are they laying on the ground with no movement or facing the adversities and soaring to their own heights by accepting the challenges of life and growing?

Writing My Book May Be One of My Greatest Blessings

Ignorantly, I believed I was simply writing a book to share with my family. Not so in that from the first sharing of the idea to write a book, it took on a life of its own. All I could do was hang-on for the ride and learn as situations presented themselves the best way possible. Many times writing the book was the easiest part, the book signings, meeting people's requests for more information, mailing me books to personalize and send back and the best part, listening to people's reactions from reading my book.

I received a wonderful surprise from a neurological multiple sclerosis forum I've been a member of since symptom onset in 2000. This is a book review and in such a well thought out and concise manner the review hit the nail on the head. The reviewer does not know me outside of reading my book for the website 'Resources Section.' I hope you enjoy it.

Allow me to share the review of Ashley Ringstaff of MSWorld.org.

I struggled to summarize this book because there are so many tidbits that you can’t sum it all up. But Mr. Mattice does a wonderful job in his introduction. He says ‘OK! Here’s the bottom line; contained within these covers I share what took me a great deal of time, aggravation, heartache and a good deal of money to find ways to make the challenges easier and the results more effective……the hard way.’

Mr. Mattice has solid advice about dealing with doctors. He also advises how to keep up a healthy level of insanity by putting ‘decaf in the coffee maker for three weeks. Once everyone has gotten over their caffeine addictions, switch to espresso.’ And last, but not the last or least of his themes is to ‘live life on your terms’ by taking ‘full responsibility for your life, behavior, thoughts and attitude.’

There is a lot more in this book which requires a first read, a second and maybe a third to take it all in! And don’t forget to schedule another reading in a year or whenever you need a refresher!

I enjoyed this book on my first read as Mr. Mattice has a roaring sense of humor and I would recommend it for those who have MS and even those aren’t that lucky!

Reviewed By: Rakunbar

http://www.msworld.org/resources/book-review/evaluate-adapt-and-overcome-accept-no-limits-life.

To say this experience has been very humbling is an understatement. More recently I was invited to my church for a 'simple' book signing. I enjoyed the very successful book signing on Sunday the 19th, however I was overwhelmed by the interest and response of the attendees. We ran out of books requiring a follow up order the next week. The message of the service focused on friendship and the positive impact one might have on other people's lives. A humbling experience as I was identified as such a "Friend." To my great surprise the entire service subject was dedicated to the meaning of being a "Friend" and I was the example. Four of my very good friends stood before the congregation each sharing the strong positive impact experienced as a result of my friendship with them. I was absolutely caught off guard for such an event.

I have an individual Facebook page dedicated to my book, and with all of the changes occurring I finally was able to accomplish a major goal. I located and "Like" (ed) many of the favorite books, authors, inspirational motivational speakers, religious writers and speakers, including many more who have greatly influenced and impacted my life. Only through this personal development journey and a great deal of life's experience, have I learned and reached the point where I am today. Education does not stop upon college graduation, rather only signifies the true beginning of learning life's key principles to success and "Living Life on Your Own Terms."
