For The Love Of Lavender

I have always loved lavender....

whether in a bowl...

on a silver plate...

or in a jar....

I have always had a thing for lavender. I love scattering bundles around my home...especially in the fall and winter months....just to remind me...that soon...they'll be back again.

Yes, those are bloomers.

Years ago, when I owned a children's clothing line, we used to make heirloom baby dresses into pillows. It was a fun way to have favorite baby items as keepsakes.

Well, these old bloomers were just too pretty to keep stuck in box!

It seems odd to have Christmas spirit before Halloween but last weekend I had a sudden urge to make some ornaments. And ever since I've had a holiday bug in my ear. Maybe it's the cinnamon scented air freshener that I got at the dollar store on Friday. (smiles)

Some years it feels like the holidays sneak up on me and I don't have time to get in the noel-ish frame of mind. Some years I just want to hold on to Summer or Fall and I miss a chunk of the holiday season holding onto the past. Some years the warm fuzzies strike me early and I put my heart into every single handmade gift, and seize every opportunity to give and share and volunteer, to be creative and decorate and bake with the kids.

I enjoy those heart years so much more, savoring each memory made. But for some reason a few Christmases have past since I've had a heart year. I don't know about anyone else but I've noticed that try as I might, I can't force it. No matter how I go through the motions, if I'm not having a heart year, I can't make it happen. I give the gifts, I bake the meals but some years my heart just isn't in it. I can't make myself feel the warm Christmas fuzzies. So waking up one Saturday in October to discover warm fuzzies at my dinning room table was such a welcome site! I'm going out today and getting gobs more of those cinnamon scented air fresheners!

I thought I'd share a bit of white from the Warrenton show! Reborn Rubbish and Bayou Salvage partnered up with some abuntantly lovely lace cuffs, bloomers and dreamy outfits.

Sweet Pea Collection always has the most inspiring nooks and corners!

I hate to string you along but I can only give you a peek. We are putting tons of Fall Antique Show photos from around the country into an issue of Porch Magazine that you'll drool over! Ten years ago we moved to the country. We literally live on a little country lane with dirt tracks and grass in the middle. Our mail box is a half mile away. Our first Halloween, with sadness, I realized no little ghosts and goblins would be ringing our doorbell that year so now I do two things. Number one, I invite friends over for a Halloween dinner which usually consist of brunswick stew, homemade cheese crackers and fresh apple cake with caramel frosting....yum! And the other thing is to make Halloween things for my Etsy shop. Since I sell vintage in my online shop I always incorporate some vintage items in the Halloween party hats or cake toppers. Vintage Haunted Houses

A dear friend recently gave me a bag of 1920's photographs, that included many house pictures. I was unsure as to what to do with them until Halloween inspired me- haunted houses! The homes certainly looked creepy enough to be haunted, and with vintage typewriter text stamps, they are labeled accordingly. Perfect for Halloween decorating or to make into "Welcome to your new Home" cards (Ha!) vintage house photos are usually very inexpensive and easy to find, so have fun making them, or buy mine (shameless marketing plug) at http://VintageScraps.etsy.com/

I threw together some raggle-taggle business cards yesterday. Mr. Blessing and I are getting ready to visit friends at the Round Top/Warrenton/Marburger shows and I've been trying to come up with some unique cards to hand out if the need should arise.

I'm near giddy with the anticipation of being there. It's such a delightful mix of all my favorite things. And I get to take photos for Porch Magazine so I'm falling-all-over-myself happy.

Fun with a little work on the side!

ah yes, it's time for Oktoberfest in Mt. Angel, Oregon, and we are lucky to live only 17 miles from this little town, so we celebrate every year. I forgot my camera, so the pics you see here are from the official Oktoberfest website

This German celebration has been a tradition in Mt Angel for over 40 years.
Why September some ask...

Oktoberfest is a generic word meaning a HARVEST CELEBRATION. In Germany most fall festivals come at the end of the harvest when the crops are in and everything sits in the lager house. It is time to celebrate the year's hard work and praise the Creator’s bounty with a grand harvest festival. Few harvest festivals in Germany are called OKTOBERFEST. All however, are harvest celebrations. In Mount Angel, Oktoberfest always starts the second Thursday after Labor Day – about when the hop harvest is in.

Webentanz – Mount Angel school children perform a German weavers (May pole) dance and other Bavarian folk dances each day at noon

oh my the FOOD--that is the main reason this event can't be missed!

So much shopping to be done--and things you find only at a German Harvest festival!

If you love to dance polka, this the place!

And it would not be Oktoberfest without the Biergarten!
..they have a weingarten too...

The other day I found and old 60's style bathrobe in my fabric stash (yes, my vintage textile addiction is that bad). The robe had an aqua blue satin lining with a lace overlay. I thought that the lace overlay might make a a sweet long jacket.

Now, mind you, I'm not a seamstress. I can't even read a pattern. I just hodge-podge things together so it took me most of the day to rip seams, mend seams, take off the ruffle collar and make some tucks here or there.

It's certainly no Magnolia Pearl (my design hero) but it was a lovely way to spend the day. I encourage you - in your white projects this week - aspire to have the talent of your hero but be you... work with your talents... create something that you'll love... and then keep it just for yourself.

Treasure Hunting

So many of us love vintage, sell vintage and dream vintage. :) The warm patina, character, uniqueness, sentimentality, history and charm all contribute to that special piece. One week cannot go by without me spending at least one day on a treasure hunt, seeking the perfect vintage or antique item for you. I have been looking for a couple of years for the perfect bench to place in my entry way. A place to throw a purse or those packages waiting to be picked up by my mail lady or carried out by my trusty shipping assistant (Bobby G.). A place to plop down and put on my boots or a place to slide the flip flops under. Well...I finally found it this past Saturday at our tiny little local flea market. Usually I don't find much there, with the dealers there having way too much cheap new stuff. But boy did I luck out this time. Maybe it was that extra little prayer I said as I drove out the drive way Saturday morning. :) This absolutely charming church pew was sitting there under a mass of new blankets and socks. I peeked and peeked, moved the blankets over and peeked some more. Finally I asked the vendor if his display piece was for sale. "Yes m'am", he said, "if you want that ol' thing." Ha! Did I want that ol' thing? You betcha! Without measuring I knew it would be the perfect size and it has white cottage paint with just a little chippiness. And I love the curvy sides and cut out bottom and the extra added detail work on the side boards. The seat is one whole plank of wood and so are the sides. The antique church pew came out of a little church off of Jeter Rd. out here in the country. A new church was built with new factory pews but in my opinion nothing as sweet and charming as this dear piece, that now will be loved and cherished for years to come. Don't you just love it? You could never find a piece like that in a furniture store? Oui? Have a super great week everyone and I wish you all happy treasure hunting! Oh Yeah, I forgot to tell you it was..............$40.00 :)

Last weekend Baby Blessing and I had the entire house to ourselves for 3 days! I call my youngest "baby" but he's 6 now so it was actually a fun time getting to know my boy in a new way, without the other kids around. He enjoyed helping me spray paint some items to get them ready for projects. I love how our Victorian boots turned out! We won't talk about the patio stones =)

End of Summer Cottage

When you think of cottages "New Jersey" isn't exactly the first place that comes to mind! But historic Hopewell NJ is home to one of my favorite cottages, my sister-in-law Amy's home. And even though it's home to one patient husband, 6 kids, a zoo of cats and a dog (!) it nonetheless remains lovely and charming, and, as seen by these interior shots, rather peaceful. (The journal and clipboard were inspired by Amy's house, and the outdoor pics were taken on Cape Cod- more to come on that)

Love the way this looks...

As you all know, I'm slowly going through our home and re-doing things here and there...and when I came across this photo, I loved it. I love that I already have many of the items in this photo...like the ironstone, silver trays and I have lots of hinged glass jars that I'm labeling and using for my spices....and I just love the chalkboard door...I think I'm gonna try that one. And of course, when we get done with our kitchen...I'll be sure to show you the before and after....it's gonna be a big change.

Pink Saturday

Remember when Ikea used to have those amazing dried rose petals??

I can't stand to think about how many times I filled my birdbath with those now discontinued rose petals... and let them flutter off with the wind. Two summers ago I was fortunate to get about 15 boxes on clearance for 99 cents each. I filled my birdbath with water every morning and sprinkled rose petals on the surface. I know... it was frivolous and wasteful. But it was so lovely. Every now and then when I was watching the kids ride their bikes or just sitting on the front steps reading, a rose petal would catch a ride on a breeze and flipflop by me. It was like a little pink kiss blown my way.

White French Projects from the Red Shed

Inspired by Polly's White Wednesday post, here are the White projects we have been working on this week. This vintage pressed glass sconce was transformed with 100 year old french letters and stamps.........
Finally, slowly, I am figuring out how to take the silvering off of mirrors in the pattern of my choice.....fleur-ish also infused with a French document...My model, Alley Belle, reflects great taste!Before and after....glass jewel box, garage sale find......
Also infused with French letters and documents, becomes a new collectible....Old display clock becomes a fairy haven...........Before and after chair project. We kinda liked the bank bag chair cushion which we added, but our customers...not so much. So time to reinvent.......
You like?One perfect headboard. Believe me, NOT so perfect when it was started!

Have you ever tea-stained eggs?

I was sick last week and when I wasn't in a medicine-induced delirium, I brought the laptop to bed and browsed for no-stress pretty stuff to look at. I came across a blogger who had tea stained her Easter eggs. I was so smitten that it was the first thing I had to try when I could stand without Mr. Blessing holding me up.
