A small but committed group gathered to protest America's for-profit healthcare system. Howie Hawkins, a Green Party member who is well-known throughout New York State, was arrested trying to deliver a letter to Wellpoint.

Statement from Mobilization for Health Care for All:

On September 27th, the Mobilization for Health Care for All launched a national campaign of "Patients Not Profit" sit-ins at insurance company offices to demand an end to a system that profits by denying people care. We want the real "public option": Medicare for All, a single payer plan that cuts out the profit and puts patients first.

Together, through this campaign, we can turn the tide and win the fight for health care for all. To succeed, we need to organize sit-ins in as many cities as possible in the month of October. The campaign began with the local leadership of Private Health Insurance Must Go (PHIMG) in New York City on September 29th and continued in Chicago on October 8th and in 9 cities across the country on October 15th. The next wave starts on October 28th and we will continue to organize actions in as many cities as possible until we win health care reform that ensures that the insurance companies no longer stand between the American people and the health care that we need. It's time to cut out the profit and put patients first with Medicare for All.

Insurance companies are the real death panels in America. They make billions in profit and millions for their CEOs while millions of Americans have no health insurance and over 45,000 die every year because they can't get the care they need. That's more than 120 people every day. These insurance companies deny care to their members and the American people for profit.

America deserves better, and that's why we voted for change. But the insurance companies are spending millions to confuse and scare the public to keep us from ending their grip on our health and our money. With teabagger town hall protestors and the right-wing noise machine on their side, they're winning. We can't let that happen. It's time to take the fight to the real villain in the health care debate.

When the civil rights movement faced a similar challenge in the struggle to end segregation, nonviolent civil disobedience moved the nation and made reform possible. Just like the lunch counter sit-ins did for the civil rights movement, we have to make it impossible for the media and our country to ignore how outrageous the status quo of private insurance is for the American people.

It only takes a small group of people to do a sit-in in your community, but our actions can inspire every American who has been abused by the insurance companies and believes it's time for real reform to fight for it. This campaign of nonviolent civil disobedience will continue until the insurance companies no longer stand between the American people and the health care that is our right.

Already, doctors, nurses, patients, and people just like you are signing up to be one of the 1000 ordinary but courageous people who will launch this nonviolent battle to end private insurance abuse and win health care for all. Join us! We can't wait any longer - every day more people die because of the insurance company death panels.

Why I Committed Civil Disobedience for Health Care Reform

I attempted to deliver a letter on Nov. 4 from health care activists to WellPoint, Inc., a for-profit health insurance company. When WellPoint refused to accept the letter, I stood in their doorway and was arrested for criminal trespass.

My act of civil disobedience took place during a picket of WellPoint's Syracuse offices sponsored by the Mobilization for Health Care for All, Single Payer New York, and the local chapter of Physicians for a National Health Program.

Our letter demanded that WellPoint stop denying benefits to sick policyholders and use its revenues for care instead of lobbying and profits.

Insurance companies are the real death panels in America. They are the bureaucracies that stand between you and your doctor and decide whether they will pay for the care your doctor recommends.

For-profit insurance companies have a direct conflict between profits and care. Their Wall Street investors demand that insurers boost profits by denying claims.

Reforming these predatory insurers into public servants is as futile as reforming piranhas into vegetarians. The purpose of our demonstration was not only to expose the evils of for-profit health insurance, but also to expose the folly of the Democratic health care plan, which tries to reform for-profit insurance.

The Democrats took single payer, the least-cost option, off the table, and offer the most expensive option, an insurance industry subsidy plan. The Democrats' plan will spend about $100 billion a year over the next decade subsidizing our inefficient, high-cost mixed system of public and private insurance, which shuttles the costly old, poor, and sick to public insurance and steers the profitable young, affluent, and healthy to private insurance.

The individual and employer mandates in the Democratic plan force you to buy insurance or pay a fine or go to jail. The mandates deliver at least 21 million new customers, many of them subsidized by taxpayers, and at least $70 billion new annual revenues to private insurers.

The public option is just a fig leaf for this corporate option. The Democrats gutted the original "robust" public option, an option for everyone to buy into Medicare, enrolling 130 million. Now it's a token option limited to a few, enrolling only 6 million by 2019. The Republicans who call this plan a "government takeover of health care" are nuts. The Democrats who still call it a "public option" are just as nuts.

Prescription drug prices will remain the highest in the world thanks to deal the Obama White House cut with Big Pharma to bar bulk-purchasing discounts by public insurance.

Insurance costs will continue to explode because the plan impotently relies on competition in monopolistic local markets to keep prices in check. Private insurers will even use the good reforms in the plan, such as the banning limits on lifetime coverage and exclusions for pre-existing conditions, to raise prices.

The Kucinich amendment protecting the right of states to enact single-payer nonprofit health care was stripped from the House bill adopted Nov. 7 at the request of the Obama Administration and then denied a floor debate and vote by House Speaker Pelosi.

Health care should be a right provided as a public service, not a buy-or-die commodity. A single public payer, as provided for in the National Health Insurance bill, HR 676, could provide universal access to top-notch care at less cost than we now spend on our inefficient multi-payer system. Patients could choose any doctor and clinic, unlike the managed care of most insurance today. The savings from single payer are well-documented by many studies over the last two decades by the Congressional Budget Office, the Government Accountability Office, and the Harvard Medical School.

Even better would be a single-payer health service, as provided for in the US Health Service bill, HR 3000. Salaried physicians and other health workers would provide care in publicly budgeted nonprofit group practices. It would be democratic and responsive, governed from the bottom up by community health boards elected by local residents and health workers. A single-payer health service would cost even less than single-payer health insurance because it eliminates the other inflationary cost drivers: fees-for-service and profit-maximizing providers. Prospective budgets for community health boards on a per capita basis, in place retrospective fee-for-service reimbursements by third-party insurance, would enable the correction of other major health system problems: the shortage of primary care doctors, the bias toward acute curative care over preventive care, and the inequitable geographic and class-based distribution of health resources.

Whether or not the Democrats' plan passes, the health care cost and coverage crisis will continue. It's time to abandon illusions about the public option and for-profit insurance reform and go straight for the only solution that works: non-profit health care for all. As Amilcar Cabral, the West African anti-colonial leader, wisely advised: "Tell no lies. Claim no easy victories."

Week of Climate Action - Keynote Address

The Binghamton Regional Sustainability Coalition coordinated a weeklong series of events leading up to the International Day of Climate Action on October 24, 2009 as a part of the international campaign being organized by 350.org.

Launched by eminent scientists, activists, and environmentalists, 350.org called for coordinated action around the world on October 24, 2009 to build awareness of the need to bring greenhouse gases under control – from our current 390 ppm to below 350 ppm. In particular, the campaign aimed to put pressure on world leaders who planned to meet in Copenhagen six weeks later to achieve international agreement on ways to deal responsibly and adequately with the threat of climate change. Chris Hedges, whose column is published on Truthdig.org every Monday, spent two decades as a foreign reporter covering wars in Latin America, Africa, Europe and the Middle East. He served for eight years as the Middle East bureau chief of The New York Times, where he shared the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Journalism, for coverage of terrorism. Hedges also received the 2002 Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism.

In 2009 the Los Angeles Press Club honored the original columns that Hedges writes for Truthdig by naming the author the Online Journalist of the Year and granting him the Best Online Column award for his Truthdig essay “Party to Murder,” about the December 2008-January 2009 Israeli assault on Gaza.

Hedges is a senior fellow at The Nation Institute and the Anschutz Distinguished Fellow at Princeton University. He has written nine books, including “Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle” (2009), “I Don’t Believe in Atheists” (2008) and the best-selling “American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America” (2008). His book “War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning” (2003) was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction.Hedges, who holds a B.A. in English literature from Colgate University and a master of divinity degree from Harvard Divinity School, is fluent in Arabic and also speaks French, Spanish, Greek and Latin.

A Public Forum on the Effects of Marcellus Shale Gas Drilling on Local Water Sources

Speakers:

Ron Bishop, lecturer in chemistry and biochemistry at SUNY Oneonta, gives an overview of natural gas extraction technology and explain how water contamination can occur during the gas drilling process.

Steve Penningroth, Executive Director of the state-certified water testing laboratory at the Community Science Institute in Ithaca, describes how to test private and municipal water wells so that landowners and municipal officials can discover problems and have solid scientific baseline water data that will stand up in court should contamination occur.

Andrew Byers, a farmer/botanist from Newfield who has been studying gas drilling issues, describes how community members who are knowledgeable about these issues can take action.
