Lovers on the run- one of my favorite film genres and huge inspiration behind our new collection. So I got to thinking about my favorite films from this genre and decided to do a series of posts about them all...

No.1 is "À Tout de Suite,"a 2004 film by Benoît Jacquot, an homage to French New Wave starring Isild Le Besco and Ouassini Embarek (very sexy- he was also in The Good Thief). The story begins in 1970's Paris with Lili- a bored and spoiled art student, who spends her time "doodling and daydreaming". Her life takes a wild and drastic turn when she meets the young and mysterious Morroccan, Bada. She falls instantly in love and a violent and reckless adventure begins, continuing on through Spain, Morocco, and Greece. I saw this film back when it was released in 2004 and it just stuck with me. Just like all lovers on the run films, this one is romantic, impulsive, dangerous, and adventurous. But it's also French (love the New Wave styling), exotic, and young.

yesterday's post made me think of this song. i f'ing love this song. i really do. i was 9 years old when this album came out and completely envious of my older cousins with their long hair and ripped jeans, watching MTV and going to concerts. my whitesnake cassette tape was one of my most prized possessions- given to me by my cousin for christmas. somehow, i lost it over the years so now i resort to watching videos on youtube. the videos are more fun anyway.

Love this fresh out of bed look, which I confess... I've been loving for awhile now. I only just found this photo of Jayne Mansfield today in her sexy pink button down. I think we nailed it without even trying. I was originally inspired by Brigitte Bardot in "A Very Private Affair". See pics here.

Roadracers

This is when I had a crush on David Arquette....
Roadracers was my favorite from the early 90's series on Showtime, "Rebel Highway"- directed by Robert Rodriguez (a favorite) and starring David Arquette and Salma Hayak. Huge influence in our latest collection, "Untamed Youth".

Rebel Highway was a series of 1950's remakes starring "up and coming" actors from the early 90's- Alicia Silverstone, Ione Skye, Shannon Doherty, Alyssa Milano, Renee Zellweger, Jared Leto, Paul Rudd, and more. Check it out. It would make a great marathon.

i was going through this month's issue of InStyle- which was so awful, except for this little piece on Barbra Streisand, who I love. The Way We Were. The Owl and the Pussycat. What's Up, Doc? i've always thought she was stunning, but i especially love this photo shot by Francesco Scavullo for her Classical Barbra album in 1976. and i want this dress, bad.

i am overwhelmingly behind in just about everything- work, emails, blogs, tv. it's been 10 days since we landed here in brooklyn and we are still surrounded by boxes. everyday we get rid of a few more, but i really just can't wait until they are all gone. in the midst of unpacking, i did sneak away long enough to go through at least half of my favorite blogs.

roadtrip: day 8

After spending a few hours walking around Bellefonte, enjoying the crisp autumn weather and the amazing Victorian architecture, Adam was pretty eager to get back on the road. We were only a few hours away from New York now. I was a little sad to see our roadtrip coming to an end... I could only imagine how hard it was going to be to unpack and settle in our new place. For those days spent on the road there was only so much we could do. It was a brief vacation- a sort of stressful vacation, but still a break from the day to day. Once we get to the new apartment, we will not only have to deal with unpacking, cleaning, and organizing but also the stress of trying to get back to work in the midst of it all.

Breaking for lunch at The Willowtree Inn in Stroudsburg, PA. It was a strange little place... beautiful view of the creek featured above, but also completely decked out in Halloween ornamentation, also featured above (and this is only a small dose of it). The vegetarian lunch option was a little lacking, but overall the place was charming.

Brief stop: The Delaware Water Gap. Stunning and a beautiful time of year to see it.

Once we got close we had to break out all of our favorite NYC songs-
"we live in brooklyn, baby"- roy ayers, "new york"- the cat power cover, "b-boy bouillabaisse"- the beastie boys, "waiting for the man"- the velvet underground, and of course, everything by the ramones.

The Queen- Bellefonte, PA

We were so lucky to find The Queen- a Victorian bed & breakfast in Bellefonte, PA.
We arrived late- around 9:30pm the night before after a couple hours of stressful driving. Nancy, the owner, gave us a great last minute deal and set us up in the maid's quarters. It was too bad we didn't have more time to spend there because it was so comfy, cozy.

Breakfast was served at 9am. We began with berries and creme, (fresh raspberries from the garden) and moved on to the incredible, beyond amazing Creme Brulee French Toast. It didn't even taste like french toast. It was like nothing I had ever had before- it was so decadently delicious. If you feel industrious enough to attempt this at home, the recipe is revealed here.

roadtrip: day 7

Again... playing catch up on the roadtrip.

Monday, Oct. 12th- waking up in Lima, OH. We had left Chicago so late the night before, that we didn't settle down for the night until 1am. We had made a short detour to visit my Ohio side of the family in Lima. But a roadtrip would not be complete without at least one problem with the car. We had been doing so well up until that morning...right up until the coolant level indicator came on. So we open the hood, check the level, everything is pretty good but now the hood won't close! The hood just wouldn't latch. We tried driving a little. The hood flew up. Bad news. Luckily my family was near by, so my uncle rescued us on the side of the road. After about 4 hours we were good enough to get back on the road. At least we got a few hours in with the family.

I had never been through Ohio during autumn...it was beautiful.

Grandpa's Cheesebarn. Ashland, Ohio. Once I saw this from the side of the road, I knew we had to stop. This is definitely a roadside gem.

Amazing looking fudge- maple syrup, turtle, and blueberry. For some bizarre reason I didn't try any. I was too full?? Feeling bad about all of the junk food I was already forced to eat on the road?

This was the first gas station/ rest stop we saw that had all of the traditional goods- postcards, license plates, etc.

After driving through rain and scary darkness, we made it to our final destination for the night- Bellefonte, PA.

roadtrip: day 6

Catching up on the road trip... day 6 was actually last Sunday, the 11th. We began the day in Chicago, after spending the night at the Westin, just outside of Chicago- by the airport (much cheaper!) After five days of cheap motels and sketchy highway towns, scoring a deal on a nice hotel room was, like the photo says, very nice.
After a free buffet breakfast, we finally headed into Chicago.

Couple in Bed, Philip Guston. 1977. I love this painting of Guston and his wife in bed together. Night Studio, a book by Guston's daughter Musa, gives a great narrative of the time when this painting was made, and what it means.

Cloud Gate, in Millenium Park, a new (to us) area of Grant Park in the center of the city. We spent a few minutes running around taking photos, along with everyone else...that's us in the middle.
"What I wanted to do in Millennium Park is make something that would engage the Chicago skyline…so that one will see the clouds kind of floating in, with those very tall buildings reflected in the work. And then, since it is in the form of a gate, the participant, the viewer, will be able to enter into this very deep chamber that does, in a way, the same thing to one's reflection as the exterior of the piece is doing to the reflection of the city around."

we arrived in brooklyn on tuesday. the movers came on wednesday. yesterday we tackled the kitchen and living room. today we are taking on the office, and hopefully some of the bedroom.

we have safely arrived to our new home in brooklyn, after a week on the road.we've both lived in brooklyn before, but this is a new neighborhood for the both of us- very industrial and not the beautiful park lined streets we were used to.
the movers get here today with all of our stuff. i am very much NOT looking forward to unpacking. we've just moved from a 3 bedroom apt. in LA with a separate studio to a 1 bedroom loft in brooklyn. it will definitely be a challenge to figure out how all of our stuff will fit. i think it is safe to say that the month of october will be dedicated to getting ourselves sorted.

p.s. there are more road trip pics to come. our internet access has been inconsistent for the last couple of days.i promise- they will be coming soon!

Waking up to snow on the ground in downtown Omaha. Neither of us prepared for snow when we were packing, but at least we got to use the seat warmers properly in the car.

This caramel bread pudding looked ridiculous, but we settled for a oversize cinnamon bun which kept us feeling full forever.

And then it became autumn again.

Finally, we made it to Chicago!
After many nights staying in motels where we were afraid to even walk on the floor, we indulged and booked a room at the Westin by the airport. We had plans to go out into Chicago for some pizza, but after settling in we were too tired and lazy to leave. Luckily we found a pizza place to deliver...Giordano's- world famous stuffed pizza! Of course, after about one piece we were too full to even look at it...but we did it, cross it off the list, we had Chicago style pizza.
And now I am in a rush to get out of here before check out time, so more on this later...

today we took on nebraska...

we stumbled upon this gas station junkyard in pine bluffs, wyoming while looking for the lady of peace shrine. unfortunately she was only accessible by dirt road. we were afraid we would pop a tire so we left, defeated. but the junkyard was worth it.

this is nebraska- flat, but very beautiful.

my favorite nebraska find: the fort cody trading post. we were lured in by the 30 ft. tall sign of Buffalo Bill.
