Chitika Research: Clickers Are More Likely to Click

MARLBOROUGH, 11/25/2009 – People who search by clicking the button on Google’s homepage are fifty percent more likely to go on to click an ad than people who search by any other Google means, according to online ad network Chitika. The study, which looked at just over 11 million impressions, shines a light on the possibility and importance of being able to predict web users’ activity.

When comparing the different types of traffic that come through their advertising network, the researchers at Chitika compared the different types of Google traffic – people who click on the “Google Search” button, people who search by hitting the enter key, people who search from browser toolbars, etc. While the overall clickthrough rate for the entire Google-searching sample was 0.95%, the people who searched by clicking on the search button at Google.com clicked ads at a 1.56% rate, over half again higher.

But the question becomes, why such a high disparity? Why are people who type in their query and hit enter so much less likely to click on an ad than someone who performs a search differently through the same website?

“Sophistication is my guess,” says Rand Fishkin, SEO guru and CEO of SEOMoz.org. ”Hitting enter means you’re not moving your hands away from the keyboard and likely indicates a more tech-savvy (and hence, click-sensitive) individual.”

So it appears that advertising click rates are inversely proportional to the “tech-savviness” of the people receiving the ads. By defining a user’s tech-savviness, it’s possible that ad networks going forward will be able to target better and better, driving revenue for websites while showing less ads.

Official: Water has been discovered on the Moon

Since man first touched the moon and brought pieces of it back to Earth, scientists have thought that the lunar surface was bone dry. But new observations from three different spacecraft have put this notion to rest with what has been called "unambiguous evidence" of water across the surface of the moon.

The new findings, detailed in the Sept. 25 issue of the journal Science, come in the wake of further evidence of lunar polar water ice by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and just weeks before the planned lunar impact of NASA's LCROSS satellite, which will hit one of the permanently shadowed craters at the moon's south pole in hope of churning up evidence of water ice deposits in the debris field.

The moon remains drier than any desert on Earth, but the water is said to exist on the moon in very small quantities. One ton of the top layer of the lunar surface would hold about 32 ounces of water, researchers said.

"If the water molecules are as mobile as we think they are — even a fraction of them — they provide a mechanism for getting water to those permanently shadowed craters," said planetary geologist Carle Pieters of Brown University in Rhode Island, who led one of the three studies in Science on the lunar find, in a statement. "This opens a whole new avenue [of lunar research], but we have to understand the physics of it to utilize it."

Finding water on the moon would be a boon to possible future lunar bases, acting as a potential source of drinking water and fuel.

Where the water comes from

Combined, the findings show that not only is the moon hydrated, the process that makes it so is a dynamic one that is driven by the daily changes in solar radiation hitting any given spot on the surface.

The sun might also have something to do with how the water got there.

There are potentially two types of water on the moon: that brought from outside sources, such as water-bearing comets striking the surface, or that that originates on the moon.

This second, endogenic, source is thought to possibly come from the interaction of the solar wind with moon rocks and soils.

The rocks and regolith that make up the lunar surface are about 45 percent oxygen (combined with other elements as mostly silicate minerals). The solar wind — the constant stream of charged particles emitted by the sun — are mostly protons, or positively charged hydrogen atoms.

If the charged hydrogens, which are traveling at one-third the speed of light, hit the lunar surface with enough force, they break apart oxygen bonds in soil materials, Taylor, the M3 team member suspects. Where free oxygen and hydrogen exist, there is a high chance that trace amounts of water will form.

The various study researchers also suggest that the daily dehydration and rehydration of the trace water across the surface could lead to the migration of hydroxyl and hydrogen towards the poles where it can accumulate in the cold traps of the permanently shadowed regions.

Google is being challenged by Bing - Google Vs Microsoft

Given undistinguished history of Microsoft's late and unlamented Live Search engine, the predecessor to Bing, it's easy to dismiss Redmond as a hapless also-ran in the search market. But given the vast sums of money and resources that Microsoft is investing in its fledging Google challenger, this could change in a hurry.

Launched in May, Bing initially received a tepid response; some critics essentially called it Live Search with a new coat of paint. But Microsoft is nothing if tenacious. (Old-timers will recall how badly the early versions of Windows stank before Redmond finally found success with version 3.0.) The company has been steadily upgrading Bing since May, including some pretty useful innovations announced Wednesday.

One new and noteworthy upgrade is the inclusion of search results from Wolfram Alpha, an oddball, "computational knowledge" search tool that's probably too geeky for the average user. When integrated with a mainstream query engine, however, Wolfram Alpha algorithms prove their mettle by returning actionable data rather than just a page of links. Microsoft provides a few examples on its Bing blog. Search for "bmi," for instance, and Bing displays Wolfram Alpha's body mass index calculator at the top of the results page.

It's debatable whether Bing is gaining market share, however, or simply spinning its wheels. According to online data service Experian Hitwise, Bing's share of U.S. Web searches rose to 9.57 percent in October 2009, up from 8.96 percent in September. Of course, Bing was still a distant third behind Google (70.6 percent) and Yahoo (16.14 percent).

Flash back to May, and Microsoft Live Search had 9.9 percent of the U.S. search market, according to Nielsen Online. Not a lot of improvement there, despite Microsoft's extensive and expensive Bing marketing blitz.

If you're a diehard Google Search fan, don't hate Bing. Embrace it. Because Microsoft's nipping at Google's heels will only make the world's dominant search engine that much better. In fact, it appears that Google is already playing catch-up. Last month it launched a new tool called Similar Images, a feature that's very much like one first seen in Bing and Live Search. (To be fair, Similar Images was first launched in test mode in Google Labs in April.)

Bing hasn't amazed anyone yet--and it may very well have to if it hopes to grab significant market share from Google. And let's not forget that Google has the resources and determination to match and surpass any of Bing's enhancements. This fight should be fun to watch.

The global economic crisis has reduced the number of billionaires and made the richest people in the world poorer, according to Forbes magazine.

Forbes found 793 billionaires in 2009, down 30 percent from a year earlier. This is the first decline since 2003.
The total net worth of people on the magazine's list this year fell 46 percent to $2.4 trillion. The average billionaire is now worth $3 billion, 23 percent less than in 2008.

Despite losing $18 billion in the past year, Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates reclaimed the title of richest man in the world, with a total net worth of $40 billion.

Warren Buffett is No. 2, with $37 billion. He lost $25 billion in the past year as shares in his company, Berkshire Hathaway Inc., dropped nearly a third in value.
Mexican telecom titan Carlos Slim Helu, who lost $25 billion, is third, and Oracle Corp. Chief Executive Larry Ellison is No. 4.

The latest list includes citizens of 52 countries and one principality. Americans hold 10 of the top 20 spots, compared with four last year.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, at No. 17, is the only member of the top 20 whose net worth climbed during the past year. Bloomberg, who makes a salary of $1 a year as mayor, benefited from a re-evaluation of his company, Bloomberg LP. The are many ways to make money online these days. Some tell you create an online store selling the latest most popular products. Others tell you to find a cheap wholesaler and sell products on eBay. In an online store you would setup a website which is filled with the latest popular products, like iPods, iPhones, Nintendo Wii systems and accessories etc. You would first have to first find a cheap wholesaler who can provide you with these products for cheap prices so you can sell it for profit. Then you need setup the website listing the products which is integrated with some sort of credit card payment system. Pros: Physical products that are already popular are easy to sell. Cons: Profit margin can be very low, setup can be tricky for a newbie.

2) Selling On eBay:
To sell physical products on eBay you again need to pick a popular product and look for a wholesaler selling it for cheap prices. You then open an eBay account which is free and list your product(s) for sale. You can even create an eBay store very easily. eBay handles all the payments with its Paypal payment processor. Pros: Newbie friendly, no website setup required, no payment processor setup required, easy to use eBay listing features and customer services. Put your listing in front of millions of eBay members. Cons: eBay fees can be lot.

3) Selling Digital Products
What are digital products? Digital products are referred to products like eBooks (books you read on your computer), software etc. What you can do is write your own eBook, something like a “how to” guide about anything you like or create a software product and sell it on your website. How and Where to Research the best and highest paying Keywords

Most online searches, whether for information or products, begin with a keyword being typed into a search engine like Google, Yahoo, MSN, or any one of several hundred others.

Keyword research will tell you which keywords are most popular, so you can optimize the wording of your webpages and get attention and better ranking from search engines. Keyword research will also tell you which keywords to target in pay per click advertising campaigns. But those actions are all somewhere in the future. Right now, all we want to do is identify a potentially profitable market. Good keyword research can also do that.

How and Where to Research Keywords

After you have made a short list of a few niche markets where you might like to work, go to an online keyword research tool and type in whatever basic keywords you would use if you were actually searching for information on those markets.
By the way, I personally prefer online keyword research tools rather than desktop softwares that actually “live” on your computer. I'vefound the results to be more reliable.

The NicheBot keyword research tool is a terrific time saver. You can set up a professional account and get 10 search credits for just $1 US. To practice, you might want to pick three or four words from the list on page one of this report. I won't go into the mechanics of using the NicheBot site. Excellent help files are available therein. I'll also make a quick mention the Free Trial at Keyword Discovery which is a paid keyword research service. Nichebot also provides some results from the Keyword Discovery engine – but if you want the
whole enchilada it's best to go directly to the source.

A commonly stated rule of thumb is that any base keyword that returns 50,000 or more searches a month is a potentially good market. However, don't cast the 50,000 figure in stone. Smaller markets can be profitable if they are not already overwhelmed by other marketers.

Along that line, NicheBot also provides statistics on keyword competition as well – in other words, how many competing pages show up on major search engines when that keyword is queried. The Keyword Discovery engine provides an insight into existing market competition with its “KEI” factor.

The larger the KEI number, the less competition there is for any given keyword. But don't allow yourself to be automatically put off by a highly competitive niche. Where there is a lot of activity, there is typically a lot of money as well. Think for a moment about how fast food chains tend to cluster their outlets in a single area of any given town. They all learned a long time ago that competition breeds activity, and activity results in sales.

Next
Once you have firmed up a potentially profitable market, be sure you actually search the base keywords in both Yahoo and Google, and visit at least the top 10 search results to see what those sites are up to – what they are offering in the way of products – and what needs you might be able to fill in that niche.

So you see, defining a profitable niche market involves compiling
information relating to several factors – as no single factor will tell the entire story. You need to at least take a good look at:
- niche topic popularity
- keyword popularity
- actual search statistics
- level of competition and their tactics
- product presence (or absence)
and then come to a conclusion based on logic and observation, leaving emotion and cheap thrills to the side for the fortune seekers and program hoppers.

Finally
Keep in mind that how well you package and market your product, and the degree of market penetration you achieve, will likely be the deciding factor in whether or not your venture flies or crashes to the ground.

Thousands of outstanding products go by the wayside every day from a gross lack of effective marketing. At the same time, truckloads of worthless junk are perpetrated on the buying public every day of the year, as a result of clever marketing tactics.

Agence France-Presse NEW YORK – Mark Zuckerberg, the 23-year-old founder of social networking site Facebook, is the youngest ever self-made billionaire, according to an annual list published by Forbes magazine. “He is the youngest billionaire in the world right now and we also believe he is the youngest self-made billionaire in history,” said the magazine’s Associate Editor Matthew Miller, unveiling this year’s super-rich list.

The magazine put the former Harvard student’s personal wealth at 1.5 billion dollars, based on what it said was a conservative valuation of five billion dollars for Facebook and Zuckerberg’s estimated 30 percent stake. It played down speculation that the site could be worth as much as 15 billion dollars, which was based on Microsoft paying 240 million dollars for a 1.6 percent stake in the company last year. “Would it really fetch that much today?

Some analysts — and a few Facebook investors — doubt it,” the magazine said. It said it based its valuation on Facebook’s estimated annual sales of 150 million dollars.

AdSense today announced at Adspace and on their blog that they’re developing a much requested feature for publishes - category filtering.

“Category filtering will give publishers the ability to block ads that fall into specific categories such as dating, religion, and politics. Regardless of how ads are targeted, they’ll be filtered if they’re within one of the selected categories. We’ll also show the percentage of recent revenue that ads in each category generate, so publishers can predict how filtering selections will impact their revenue.”

The feature is being launched as a beta test to a small group of publishers so don’t expect to see it too soon unless you’re in the test group. I think this will go a long way in removing those irrelevant ads that occupies space and doesnt have weight. Those ads could be annoting at times and they also carry low CTR, this is a very good innovation.

Hey guys, i know it's been a while. i've been writing my MSc Exams and i just couldn't get myself to make a post. i'm through with the first phase and now i can relax. while doing my search, i found his post on google adsense blog, it will help you.

Google AdSense program has made it easier for webmasters to make money through a website. Webmasters who run an AdSense campaign will display Google's contextual Ads relevant to the content of their sites and thus encouraging visitors to click the ads and earn money for each ad click.

However you will earn very little AdSense revenue if you don't know how to optimize your AdSense ads on your website. Here are some tips to increase your AdSense earning:

1. Focus on one Adsense ad format. The Large Rectangle (336X280) ad format seems to work better than other ad formats because this format tends to result in higher click through rates (CTR). Another reason is that the ads will look like normal web links that visitors use to click on them. It doesn't matter whether the visitors know that they are clicking AdSense ads or not, as long as there are clicking, you earn AdSense commission.

2. Create a custom palette for your ads. Select a color that matches your website's background. 4. Try to place your AdSense ads near rich content as visitors main focus usually are your content. There are several ways to insert AdSense ads into your content and one of the ways is place your AdSense just after the end of your content.

5. Try to automate the insertion of your AdSense code into the webpages using SSI (or server side included). Ask your web administrator if your server supports SSI or not. How do you do it? Just save your AdSense code in a text file, name it as “AdSense text”, and upload it to the root directory of the web server. Then use SSI, call the code on other pages. This tip is a time saver especially for those who are using automatic page generators to generate pages on their website.
