What inspired you to design?
My mother was my inspiration. She was a self-taught designer and always said, “If it’s not out there, make it.”

What was the inspiration for your first designs, the reversible wrap dress and romper?
My mom would make dresses like these for me when I was young. When my girls were born, I made them too but I used bold prints and colors and made them reversible. We would go out to the park or to the store and people would stop us wanting to know where we got their clothes. Soon, I was making them for friends and neighbors and knew I was on to something.

How did you get Right Bank Babies into stores and boutique?
Once I realized that I had a product other people wanted, I had to learn what it would take to produce my designs. I found someone to sew for me and started to go to trade shows, advertised in magazines, worked with sales reps and sales partners, and found bloggers to blog about RBB. During our first trade show, we took in $5K in orders. That was very exciting for us. We also spent money on advertising that did nothing for us. We learned as we went along.

How did you finance Right Bank Babies?
I took out a loan. I knew that if I was going to do this I needed to take the risk. I couldn't do it half-way; otherwise, I was going to be spending money on a hobby.

What has been your greatest challenge in business?
Growth and finances. It’s so important to create good habits right-a-way. Learn Quick Books or hire an account once per month (I didn't even know I could do that). Know your numbers and your margin on each piece. Have goals. If you don’t, you’re never going to have something to strive and achieve. If you don’t make it to those goals, revisit them and make new ones. And have a support system. It’s not as easy for small businesses to get a loan now. So, asking family members to invest is another way I’ve financed RBB for growth but I always make sure to have an operating agreement to keep everything upfront.

What lessons have you learned while building Right Bank Babies?
•   Pick up the phone, don’t just e-mail people
•   Don’t stress over the squeaky wheel
•   Listen to yourself

What has been the most valuable lesson for your daughters while you’ve built Right Bank Babies?
To see their mom working - and they take pride of that. There have been times when dad has had to be the stay-at-home-parent because I was working and vice a versa; but the girls understand that that’s what parents do; we work. And it’s been fulfilling for me to have a creative outlet.

What is Right Bank Babies’ Philosophy?
Don’t be too serious. Don’t save anything for a special occasion because every day is a special occasion. Have fun!

Why do you think Right Bank Babies has been so successful for the past 8 years?
We are making something that has stood the test of time. We take classic designs that work and re-introduce them in modern prints that appeal to today’s moms. Our collections are made to be mixed and matched and to grow with the child. When I lived in France and Germany I was inspired by the way the children dressed in layers and mixed prints and that is reflected in our collections.

What makes you happiest about being a business owner?
There’s a pride in having your own businesses and being the one responsible for its growth and watching it grow.

What’s next for Right Bank Babies in 2013?
This year we’re looking to expand Right Bank babies so, you may see new things in house wares, bedding and adult fashions.

Nestled Away In ‘Plane’ Sight: A Day At The Lyon Air Museum

Last week my boys, ages 7 and 16, and I visited the Lyon Air Museum in Santa Ana, CA. Nestled next to Orange County's John Wayne Airport, the Lyon Air Museum exhibits an impressive collection of “authentic aircraft, rare vehicles and memorabilia, with emphasis on the defining event of the 20th century – WWII.”

As soon as we walked through the double doors of the lobby to the museum’s 30,000 sq. foot enclosed hanger, we were face to face with an awesome display of over twenty rare and expertly restored historic craft and memorabilia; much of which is on loan from families of honored veterans, including original newspaper clippings and documentation.

Quentin, Vaughn and I spent close to 2 hours at the museum truly fascinated by the sheer magnitude of these crafts and the stories behind each. Together, we read the poster board displays that enlightened us with the history of the machines and of the brave men who operated them. Quentin was especially interested as he was studying WWII events in his World History class at school.

As a parent, I appreciated the cleanliness of the museum and the well organized displays. I felt that I could contribute to the conversation with my children even with my limited knowledge of WWII events. I would however, recommend that when you visit, ask for the assistance of one of the volunteer docents who are available on a first come first service basis. They are so much more knowledgeable and have some great stories that amuse the kids and keep them engaged.

An added bonus of the museum's location is that it parallels one of the airport runways, so we were able to watch airplanes take off and land up close; a special treat itself.

The Lyon Air Museum is open 10AM to 4 PM daily and is located at 19300 Ike Hones Road Santa Ana, CA 92707.

General Admission is $12, Ages 5-17 $6, Under 5 Free, Seniors and Veterans $9.00. The Lyon Air Museum also has a School Group Tour Program.

When I think of green, I think of youth, rejuvenation and jubilee. So, it’s with great excitement that Pantone has named Emerald Green ‘the’ color for 2013.

Don’t Let Another Year Pass Without Naming Guardians For Your Kids!

If you’re making New Year’s resolutions this year and still have minor children at home, don't forget to add naming legal guardians to the list!

Statistics show that 69% of parents do not have legal guardians named who can raise their kids if something tragic happens to them. Many assume a family member would step in, or that they can simply “tell” someone about their guardianship wishes, but unfortunately, our legal system does not work that way.

Instead, if you don't legally document your choice of guardians, a judge (who does not know you or your wishes!) will have to step in and make this decision on your behalf. That means your kids could be placed with someone you would NEVER choose if something happened to you.

I’m often reminded of the Barber family car accident in 1996. Mel and Casey Barber were killed in a horrific crash, while their 3 small boys survived. If that’s not terrible enough, the boys were forced into foster care because their parents did not have documents in place that would allow them to stay with another family member. A lengthy court battle ensued, and eventually a judge (who didn’t know Mel or Casey Barber) made the decision as to who would care for the boys. Was this the same person the Barbers would have chosen? We’ll never know because they didn’t put their wishes in writing.

But here’s the thing—naming legal guardians to care for your minor children is EASY! There is no reason to go another day, week or year without them! Here are simple 4 steps to help you get started with the process:

1. Sit down and brainstorm all the people who could possibly raise your kids if you were killed or incapacitated in an accident. Don’t limit your choices to family either. Think outside the box and write down everyone who even remotely fits the bill.

2. Determine who you would NEVER want to raise your kids in your absence. You’ll need to tell the courts who you DON’T want raising your kids in the event that individual contests your wishes and seeks custody anyway (This can be kept private and only revealed if the need arises).

3. Weigh your values. Make another column and write down what is important to you and/or your spouse. Do you value education? Religious or spiritual training? The ability to live in a certain community? Being raised in a two-parent family? Whatever your values may be, be honest about them, write them down, prioritize them and eventually rank the top three.

The next step is to match your top guardian choices to your top values. This will give you a clear picture of who you can trust to raise your children with the values you hold near and dear to your heart.

Finally, get with your estate planning attorney and legally document your choice of guardians so there’s no question as to who you want to raise your kids if something happens to you! It’s the only way to guarantee your kids will be physically and financially protected in your absence.

2013: Knock. Knock. Who's There? Good Fortune.

I celebrated the end of 2012 and arrival of 2013 like so many families do; among the happy chaos of home surrounded by way too much food.

My husband, children and I counted down the seconds to the new year in our living room, poppers and noise makers in hand. At the stroke of midnight we released our handfuls of confetti, set off the poppers and hugged each other exchanging kisses and our wishes for a, "Happy New Year!". Within the hour, the children were in bed and I and my husband sat quietly together smiling - knowing each others thoughts without saying a word.

Looking at our children that night, I was overwhelmed by the wonderful sensation and happiness of my "perfect" life. Of course, perfect is my interpretation, but that is the only one that really matters isn't it? And, today I resolve to celebrate. To celebrate my perfect life and my joy of being mom to three fabulous children!

I invite you to join me in this celebration. By becoming a mom, you have chosen to guide, teach, guard, provide for and love your child(ren) and you are amazing at it!

Begin today by writing down (on a pretty piece of paper) one good fortune, blessings or favorite moment and put it in a jar that you've decorated and labeled. The jar can say, "Good Fortunes", "Blessings" or whatever you want. On New Years Eve 2013 open the jar and read each piece of paper reflecting on your year. I guarantee your cheeks will hurt from smiling and your tissue box will be empty from drying your tears (of joy, of course).

Do this with your children and inspire your older children to keep a jar of their own. It's a guaranteed feel good event and you deserve it!

Paper snowflakes: Create your own winter wonderland

Paper Snowflakes. It's an endearing craft that touches the kid in me. This year, I sat down with my youngest son after school and we worked on creating our own winter wonderland.

I referred to the Internet to refresh my memory and found loads of tutorials and how to's. Things have certainly changed since elementary school and I was amazed at the complexity and beauty of some of the paper snowflakes I saw.

It took some time to find one that I could do, and with my 7 year old we adjusted it a little. Vaughn found it hard to cut the snowflakes out since the paper became so thick after folding it over a few times. So instead of cutting, he enjoyed gluing and sprinkling on glitter - which, in my opinion, really made the snowflakes 'pop'. (Note: be careful to not put too much glitter. It can weigh the snowflakes down and they won't hang well).

What I really liked about this craft, is that I had everything I needed already at home and it is relatively easy. But the absolute best thing, was spending time with my son just having fun.

The costumes are put away and Halloween decorations are coming down but what are you going to do with all of the leftover Halloween Candy? Well, we have 4 ideas that we hope will make your children feel good about bequeathing at least some of their hard-earned bounty and help to keep the temptations away from parents too.

1. Donate to Operation Shoebox – Operation Shoebox is collecting leftover Halloween candy to send to our troops overseas. You may also check with your local schools and/or Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts; many are hosting "Candy Drives" and will send to Operation Shoebox all at once.

Halloween is almost here! Before your little ghouls and ghosts hit the streets for trick-or-treating we want to share 3 Fun Family Halloween Ideas and What To Do With Your Halloween Pumpkins.

1. Pumpkin Carving: It's not too late to carve your favorite ghostly characters for eerie Halloween decor. We (and our teenagers) like Pumpkin Masters ' website for spookier patterns and our youngest love the FREE printable Disney Character Pumpkin Stencils on Disney Family.com.

You will need your pumpkin carving tools including:

a. A marker for drawing on your pumpkin
b. A large spoon for scooping out pumpkin seeds and guts.
c. Carving knives in 2 sizes; one large and one small for detailed carvings.

You can find complete pumpkin carving kits at your local grocery store or pumpkin patch.

While you're carving your pumpkins, enjoy singing these pumpkin themed songs (Teachers.Net ) or pull out your favorite Halloween album for a little haunted Halloween ambiance.

2. Roast Pumpkin Seeds: There is something fabulous about freshly roasted pumpkin seeds - and seeds from freshly carved pumpkins are yummy! There are many recipes out there but we like this one. It's easy and traditional.

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:

2 cups pumpkin seeds

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 teaspoon salt, or more to taste

Rinse the seeds in cold water, rinsing away any fibrous strings. Pat them dry. Place clean seeds in a large bowl and add the vegetable oil and salt, stirring well to coat the seeds with the oil. Spread the seeds on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake until crisp and golden, 12 to 15 minutes. Taste for seasoning and add more salt if desired.

Plant Your Pumpkin Seeds: Wash, dry and save the seeds to plant next year (they will grow!)

3. Decorate No-carve Pumpkins: If you want to do something different this year with your Halloween pumpkins, think about decorating them and using them as a Halloween centerpiece.

Take out the arts and crafts supplies which you already have around the house and color, glue and paint your pumpkins for creative fabulous-ness. There is no limit to what you and your children can create ~ maybe it's Cinderella's carriage blinged-out with fun jewels. Or, how about a sophisticated pumpkin flower vase that you've gutted and painted black with metallic silver and gold swirls?

When the Fall kicks in and the weather begins to get cooler I start to get a bit nostalgic. I love the smell of the air as the seasons change as well as the traditions that come with this time of year. Spring has its’ cleaning and opening up the home, Summer moves us outside and home becomes a place to kick off our flip-flops, but Fall is a time of fireplaces and throw-blankets, homemade chili, grilled cheese sandwiches and soups. Comfort foods that bring warmth to our bodies and to our spirit.

Fall is the time when I bring my cooking inside and move toward the comfort foods my mother made when I was growing up. Nothing brings me back more than the smell of the house when a giant pot of homemade soup is on the stove - it recalls all the feelings that make a house a home.

Homemade soup marks so many points my life – Chicken soup is the ultimate comfort food when I’m feeling sick. Such love is shown when someone has made you homemade chicken soup. Chicken soup, saltines and ginger ale placed in front of me seems to cure any ill.

Growing up back east brought clam chowder on Fridays – all the creamy goodness of New England Clam Chowder with little oyster crackers and hot sauce to mark the end of the school week.

My mother would send us out on Halloween, pillowcase in hand ready to be filled with candy. Upon our return we’d be met with homemade soup to warm our bones and fill our bellies with something more nutritious than the new sugary loot spilled out across the living room floor.

A few years ago I took over Thanksgiving dinner as part of the next generation’s traditions. Scouring recipes and table arrangements, working to make everything as beautiful as one of the million magazine layouts I had perused, I could see the concern on my mother’s face as she thought I might be biting off more than I could chew. Our medium sized dinner party grew to a motley crew of over 20 family and friends. As I worked for a few days making everything from scratch, my mother suggested starting the meal with soup. “It warms the soul,” she said, “and will keep the hunger away if the turkey takes a little longer than expected.” Soup couldn't’t have been more inspired that first Thanksgiving – we started dinner almost 2 hours late…and everyone was still in good spirits.

Chai Spice Infused Sweet Potato Bisque

Ingredients:
1 1/2 lbs. sweet potatoes, peeled & diced
1 pkg. Savory Spice Shop Chai Spice Mix
4 cups chicken broth
1/2 tsp. Saigon cinnamon
1/8 tsp. ground cloves
1/4 - 1/2 ground white pepper
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. ground cardamom
1/4 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup apple juice
1 muslin bag

Directions:
Combine sweet potatoes and Savory Spice Shop Chai Spice Mix with chicken broth in large pot. Boil over high heat until sweet potatoes are fork tender. Remove muslin bag and drain sweet potatoes, reserving liquid in a bowl. In food processor, puree potatoes until smooth, adding back chicken broth as needed to desired thickness. Add cinnamon, cloves, brown sugar, salt, white pepper and cardamom; pulse to combine. Add heavy cream and apple juice and pulse to incorporate. Reheat if needed, do not boil.

Serving Suggestions:
This bisque is wonderful served with Sage & Savory croutons. Cube day old French bread and drizzle with olive oil. Dust with 1 tsp. Savory Spice Shop Sage & Savory per cup of bread. Bake on cookie sheet in 300 degree oven for 10-15 minutes or until crispy and browned.

Notes:
May use an immersion blender or hand blender if needed, although the end product may be a little chunkier.

Yields: 4 cups+ depending on liquid added

Cumin Carrot Soup

Ingredients:
1 qt. carrots, peeled & chopped
1 cup onion, chopped
1 tsp. dehydrated minced garlic, rehydrated
2 bouillon cubes + 1 qt. water
¼ cup heavy cream
2 tbsp. honey
1 tbsp. soy sauce
1½ tbsp. ground cumin
4 tsp. Savory Spice Shop Zanzibar Curry Powder
2 tsp. ground white pepper
1 tsp. salt

Directions:
In a 4 quart sauce pan, boil carrots in water until for tender (about 30 min.) In a small sauté pan, sauté onions until translucent (about 4-6 min.). Drain carrots and all remaining ingredients except for cream. Simmer for 20 minutes. Puree until smooth. Turn off heat. Add cream and serve.

Yields: 4-6 servings

It’s that time again! BACK TO SCHOOL! Just when you thought you got the hang of having the kids home, it’s time to get into the groove of getting them back to school. Not to worry because I’ve compiled The OMG! Back-to-School Sched’ (yes, “Schedule”is abbreviated… you’re welcome) to help transition you and your family back into the school year groove seamlessly and effortlessly in 10 easy-to follow steps outlined below!

The OMG! Back-to-School Sched’

1. Rise and Shine

2. Get Out - drop the kids off (yay!)

3. Make That Dollar

4. Get In - pick the kids up(not so yay!)

5. Work Hard / Play Hard

6. Dine n’ Dash... to the Sink!

7. Rub-a-Dub-Dub

8. Awesome Mom Time (Meal Planning)

9. Not A Peep Time

10. Shut Eye

Rise and Shine- You may want to rise and shine 30 minutes before your family does for the sole purpose of getting the coffee maker started before ANYONE has a chance to ask you ANYTHING! This is a crucial step in the morning process, so PLEASE, if there’s anything you do out of these 10 steps, do this! Ok, after you have made coffee and have had your first sip, get the rest of the family up to start the day. Get everyone showered, dressed, and fed (the “fed”part will be covered in greater detail under the “Awesome Mom Time” later on), into the car, and dropped off at school/daycare.

Tip: A great way to prevent the “I don’t want to wear that… or that!” battle in the morning is to have your child select 5 - 7 outfits that he/she wants to wear for that week and put those outfits (socks, underwear, Legos, swords, pixie dust and all) in a gallon-sized freezer bag and lay them inside his/her drawer. This way, he/she has 5-7 outfits to choose from for the week and there’s no confusion as to what’s in his/her closet or drawer to wear. Be clear that he/she needs to choose wisely because once the bags are sealed, there’s no going back!

Make That Dollar- Now it’s time for you to get down to business and make that dollar! Whether you’re a corporate mama or a “momtrepreneur”, here are a few tips to help you be super productive during work hours:

Don’t respond to email until 10 am! DON’T TOUCH IT OR ALL OF YOUR HAIR WILL FALL OUT! Ok, maybe not, but it will help you be more productive with your morning hours and prevent your email from interrupting your work day.
Turn off all email notifications and sounds! You should be the one checking your email at a set time during the day. If you are constantly being interrupted with new emails, then you’re never going to finish a thought or a project. The key to being productive is allowing yourself the time and space to finish things you’ve begun. Start by turning off your email notifications and see how much more productive you are.
Make lists! If there’s anything I’ve perfected in life, it’s making lists! Start your day out by organizing your thoughts with a list, then prioritizing that list accordingly. It’s okay to add to your list(s) throughout the day, but you want to be sure to also cross as many things off your list(s) as you are adding. Also, be careful that you don’t get carried away with lists, though. You don’t want your home and/or office looking like the movie Memento.

Work Hard / Play Hard– set a daily, fixed schedule for homework & play time. When boundaries are clear, it’s more difficult for kids to fuss. They know that play time will come IF AND ONLY IF they complete their homework!

Example:
               3pm - 3:59pm - Homework time w/out any breaks
               4pm - 4:59pm - Play time
               5pm - 5:59pm - Homework time w/out any breaks

Dine n’ Dash... to the Sink!- After dinner, everyone picks up after themselves and cleans the areas they’ve used during the day… rooms included. Take 15 minutes TOPS to complete this task. Ready. Set. Go!

Rub-a-Dub-Dub– If you can, let someone else bathe the little ones so that you can move on to the next step in the schedule.

Awesome Mom Time!- This time is set aside for YOU, the Mama! This is when you get all of the lunches packed and prep the next day’s breakfast AND dinner. That’s how AWESOME you are during this time. Here are some great sites for meal planning:

Quiet Time– No matter how young or old we are, we ALL need quiet time to wind down from the craziness of the day. So, make it mandatory for EVERYONE to take a good 30 to 45 minutes before bedtime to read or relax sans cell phones.

Now it’s time for some well-deserved Shut-Eye. You can now rest knowing that the meals are prepped, the house is clean, the school outfits are ready to go, there won’t be a huge fight about when homework time is and isn’t, dinner and clean-up will be a breeze, and you will still have YOU time at the end of each and every day!

Super Awesome Mom Tip: To prevent the disappointment of not attending each and every recital, show, play, and practice throughout the school year, have each of your kids bring their calendar of events and tell them each to select 3 of the 5 events for you to attend. This way, you and your kids know which events you will and won’t be attending, preventing the inevitable letdown of a no-show day-of. This will also teach your kids the art of planning ahead and time management, which are two key traits of successful business leaders.
