As companies start to realize the power and impact of the mommy market, more and more apps are being created to cater to today’s busy mom and her children. However, I did find that not apps or operating systems are equal. When it comes to FREE educational games and books for toddlers, iphone has far greater content, more challenging and interactive learning games and a larger collection of books. But, if you’re willing to spend a few dollars, there are plenty of popular title book apps like Dr. Seuss available and who doesn’t love Dr. Seuss?

10 Vacation Tips For An (almost) Stress Free Trip

You’re looking forward to that long awaited family vacation and counting down the days. Suddenly, anxiety takes over and you begin fantasizing about the seemingly endless hours waiting in line at the airport wondering if you’ll make it through TSA without a hitch, or how you’ll keep your children entertained for hours at the airport and then on the plane. Oh, and how about schlepping the car seat, stroller, diaper bag and luggage around with kids in tow? YIKES! Well, before you pick up the phone and cancel your reservations read our 10 Vacation Tips for A (almost) Stress Free Flight When Flying with Young Children. It just may help.

1. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) strongly recommends bringing an approved child restraint system (CRS), i.e. government approved hard-backed child safety seat. This is the safest place for your little one during turbulence or an emergency. If your child is between 22 and 44 pounds the FAA has also approved CARES, Child Aviation Restraint System, a harness-type restraint. Make sure your CRS is government approved and has "This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft" printed on it. Otherwise, you may be asked to check the CRS as baggage.

Special Note: The FAA has banned the use on board aircraft of certain types of CRS that may be harmful to a child in the event of an aviation emergency. These include backless booster seats, safety belt extensions (commonly referred to as "belly belts"), and vest or harness devices that attach to an adult.

2. Ask the airline for a discounted fare. You will have to pay for a ticket for your child to use the CRS and often a discounted fare may be available. SouthWest uses the term “Infant fares”. You will need to show proof of age (i.e. birth certificate etc).

3. Airlines do allow children (usually 24 months and under) to fly free of charge when NOT occupying a seat AND traveling with an adult. However, the National Transportation Safety Board strongly suggests that all children fly using an approved safety seat or harness for their safety. Contact the airline for details regarding their policy.

4. International flights may offer the use of on-board bassinets that can be reserved for use free of charge. Contact the airline for information regarding their policy.

5. Ask the airline for help if you’ll be traveling alone with your child. Carrying a child seat, diaper bag and luggage through a busy airport with a small child can be challenging and stressful so, ask for help if you need it.

6. If you are flying internationally allow plenty of time to gather the required documents you will need for travel, i.e. birth certificates and passports. It can take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks to receive your passport after you’ve applied.

7. Become familiar with the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA’s) policies. Know what can be carried on board in your carry-on. If you are traveling with babies and toddlers, read the TSA’s “Important Information on Traveling with Formula, Breast Milk and Juice”.

Also, be aware that all baby gear, child-related equipment strollers and child restraints seats will need to go through the X-ray machine.

8. Pack your child’s favorite toy, blankee, coloring books and children's storybooks in a child sized backpack that he/she can carry. This will make them feel like a “big helper” and will keep him/her occupied at the airport and during flight.

9. Use a bag that serves the dual purpose as a purse / diaper bag. A backpack diaper bag is a great choice when you need to have both hands free and can easily hold plenty of diapers, bottles, wipes, snacks, change of clothes, formula, pacifier, baby teethers and baby food and still makes a place for important papers like tickets, boarding passes and passports.

10. Give your child something to eat or drink when the plane is taking off and landing. This may help alleviate ear pain caused by the pressure as the cabin adjusts to the altitude. And enjoy your trip!

I love Mother's Day! Really, a day to celebrate me and being a mom!? Oh yes, and you better believe that my children (and husband) know that I look forward to it. No, I don't expect lavish gifts or diamonds (although, I wouldn't turn them away) homemade crafts, breakfast in bed and a clean house will do just fine. What I love the most about Mother's Day is that on this day my family stops the hustle and bustle for one day to be together because after all, that is my favorite gift and is worth more than anything they could buy.

Happy Mother's Day!

Make your own Mother's Day Garden with your children like the one above that we found at kiboomu.com

Craft supplies you will need:

■Yogurt containers

■Popsicle stick

■Dirt

■Glue

■Flower seeds

■Scissors

■Acrylic paint

■Decorative accessories ( pom poms, rhinestones, glitter, ribbon, buttons, beads, glitter-glue and stickers)

Craft instructions:

Have the children paint the containers.

Let dry.

Once dry, have the children decorate the containers with rhinestones, glitter, ribbon, buttons, beads and stickers.

For one flower seed cup, we painted one using our fingers and a paint brush, then add a pom pom in the center and flower stickers all around the rim. For the 2 the other flower seed cups, we used stickers and pom poms from the dollar store to make it especially pretty for Mom!

Place the lid under the container and have the children fill the containers with dirt.

Then, have them plant the seeds and water.

Lastly, have the children using a Popsicle stick to label what they’ve planted, and stick it in the container.

And, voila, the children now have a Mother’s Day Flower Pot for mom!

It's the day after Easter and you open your refrigerator to a kaleidoscope of hardboiled Easter eggs. Now what? Well you eat them of course. With the kids back at school and mom and dad back to work there are plenty of opportunities to feed the family. Below are some of my favorite recipe ideas that will clear your refrigerator in no time.

Special Note: Eggs are an allergen and most pediatric sources recommend to not introduce eggs to children 1 year and younger. Parents should discuss the introduction of eggs with their child's pediatrician.

1. Deviled eggs: These are a party favorite and recipes for deviled eggs are everywhere on the internet. I personally like mine with a bit of mustard, mayonnaise, dash of vinegar for some zing and topped off with paprika.

2. Chefs salad: Chop your egg up into your favorite green salad, add a few cubes of ham or turkey and voila your everyday garden salad is transformed. I like my chef salad with ranch dressing but almost anything will work.

3. Egg salad sandwiches: This is not a favorite with my children but I love them. Dice up your hardboiled eggs; add mayonnaise, mustard and a bit of pickle relish for extra flavor. Spread it on your favorite bread or eat with your favorite crackers.

4. Potato salad with eggs: Turn your favorite potato salad into a chunky potato salad and add egg for a new family favorite. I call it chunky potato salad because I like to cut everything into large bite sized pieces; including potato, eggs, black olives, radishes and cerlery.

5. The simple hardboiled egg: Add a dash of salt and pepper for a nutritious snack.

Create Christmas Ornaments Using Objects Found Around the House

I know I say it every year - but I can hardly believe that Christmas is less than 2 weeks away and the end of another year is upon us! 2010 presented its challenges but we have many blessings for which to be grateful. Now, it is time to enjoy all the pleasantries of the season, spend time with my family and friends and relish in old traditions while creating new. Traditions don't have to be complicated, expensive or even demand a whole lot of thought behind them. They are created in the moment; those moments that your children will forever remember and perhaps carryon in their adult life. So, this year I'm sharing 5 festive family Christmas traditions old and new that you can start today! I hope they bring you Christmas cheer and fond memories.

1. Home-made Ornaments: Stores like Michaels and JoAnn's Arts and Crafts make this easy. The hardest part is choosing what kind of ornament to make. From hand-painted glass bulbs, ready to paint ceramics, felts and everything in between you and your children will have a ball creating ornaments for the tree or to give as gifts; grandparents love these! Use your child's school picture in at least one of your creations and every year you'll have a cherished keepsake ornament that eventually turns into a chronology of his/her school years! Below is a fragrant recipe from our Saige Nicole’s Facebook Friend, Rachael, that we think you will really enjoy.

Cinnamon Dough Ornaments: 1/4 - 1/2 cup Elmer's glue
water
glitter
beads, etc.

Mix cinnamon and glue together. You may need to add water if dough is too stiff. The dough needs to be the consistency of cookie dough. Mix in glitter if desired. Roll on to smooth surface. I dust the counter with cinnamon and roll it out on that to keep it from sticking. Use cookie cutters to make desired shapes. Poke hole in top to hang ornament. Decorate with beads, etc. if desired. I also give my kids a toothpick to draw decorations on the ornaments. Let dry for 2-3 days, turning a few times each day. We have some that we made 4 years ago that still smell good!

2. Make It A White Christmas with Paper Snowflakes: One of my favorite memories is cutting out paper snowflakes with my brothers. Once we were done, our parents would help us to hang them from the ceiling with thread or we'd tape them to the windows (nowadays there is special tape to use on windows and walls that won’t leave a sticky residue) Just this simple activity made our home a winter wonderland. 3. Attend A Live Christmas Show: There is nothing more exciting than getting dressed up, going to the theatre and seeing your child's face light up when the music begins! Christmas is the perfect time to introduce your child to the stage. Enjoy classic shows like The Nutcracker Ballet, Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol or maybe a modern classic like The Radio City Rockettes. Shows don't have to be expensive. Choose a show put on by your local theatre group or university for your child's first experience. The music, scenery and performances are fabulous and ticket prices are generally less expensive than a larger professional venue. Local dinner theatres are always fun too and usually include a 3 course meal with the show.

4. Elf Yourself: JibJab.com is the creator of the huge craze Elf Yourself. On your computer upload pictures of your family and friends and import them into a world of dancing elves! Choose your favorite festive song (anything from We Wish You A Merry Christmas to Feliz Navidad) and when you’re done you have a hilarious animated show! Share with your family and friends via e-mail (for a small fee) and enjoy the laughter.

5. Share Your Good Fortune: It is never too early to teach your children the joy of giving. Look for programs in your community that help bring Christmas to children and families who could use a helping hand. The Salvation Army and Toys For Tots are two well run programs. Check with your church or child's school too they will many time have an Angel Tree or volunteer program that you can participate in.

5 Ways to Keep Your Family Healthy and Happy for the Holidays

I love the classic storybook tale, Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer but recently, my husband came home sick from work with a terrible cold and I cringed. Cold and Flu Season has officially begun and the last thing I want is a household full of sick, red-nosed children. I decided to put my fighting gloves on and attack those nasty germs before they got the upper hand.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, cleaning removes germs from surfaces – whereas disinfecting actually destroys them. Cleaning with soap and water to remove dirt and most of the germs is usually enough. But sometimes, you may want to kick it into high gear and disinfect for an extra level of protection from germs.

While surfaces may look clean, many infectious germs may be lurking around. In some instances, germs can live on surfaces for hours — and even days.

Disinfectants are specifically registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and contain ingredients that actually destroy bacteria and other germs. Check the product label to make sure it says “Disinfectant” and has an EPA registration number.

Disinfect those areas where there can be large numbers of dangerous germs – and where there is a possibility that these germs could spread to others.

Two rooms in the home to pay particular attention to are The Kitchen and The Bathrooms.

In the Kitchen:

Clean and disinfect counters and surfaces before, during and after preparing food.
Use paper towels that can be thrown away OR cloth towels that are later washed in hot water OR disposable sanitizing wipes that both clean and disinfect.

In the Bathrooms:

Routinely disinfect all surfaces. Do this more often if someone in the house has a cold or the flu.

Develop Healthy Habits:

Sterilize your baby’s bottles and nipples by dropping them in boiling water for 5 minutes.
Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing or sneezing. Wash long enough to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. Just squirt it on your hands and rub them until they are dry.
Wipe down doorknobs, telephones, computer keyboards and mouse with anti-bacterial wipes when someone at home is sick or when someone in the office is sick.
Carry anti-bacterial wipes in your babybag or purse when on-the-go.
Cover your coughs and sneezes: Always use a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Make sure you cover your mouth and nose. Then throw your tissue in the trash as soon as you use it. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not your hands.

Protect your children from germ infested shopping carts and high chairs: According to her report for CBS Broadcasting, HealthWatch: Contaminated Shopping Carts, General Internist, Dr. Holly Phillips noted that [shopping ] carts “carry more bacteria than public phones and restrooms.” (Gross!)

Clean the handle, seat and tray with a bacteria killing sanitizing cloth. (Many grocery stores have these available where you get your cart)
Use a shopping cart / seat cover which covers the entire seat and handle creating a barricade between your little one and that nasty cart / seat. Be sure and wash your cover often.
Do not place your child’s food on an exposed tray. Cover the tray first with napkins or disposable placemats.
Wash your hands and your child’s hands or use an antibacterial waterless hand gel when needed and especially after handling a shopping cart or public high chair.
Use a peek-a-boo pod to keep people from touching your infant when you’re out.

Ask your child's DayCare or School for their prevention measures:

How often do they dissinfect the toys and play equipment?
How often do the wipe-down desks?
What is their policy on sick children at school?
If the daycare or school is short staffed, volunteer to help once a week with this
Special Note: Clorox.com provides ways to use Clorox Bleach to sanitize your child's toys, teethers, bottles and more to aid in killing germs. Parents, consider sharing with your child's daycare or pre-school.

If you are sick, stay at home.

Don't go to school or around other people until you don't have a fever for 24 hours.
You should measure your temperature after you've stopped taking medicines that reduce fevers.
Parents should not give children younger than 4 medicines for cough/colds without talking to a doctor.
While sick, stay away from others to keep from infecting them.
