Getting around Dubai is not much of a problem as there are a number of options in terms of means of transport available. Here is an attempt at presenting a comprehensive picture of Dubai in terms of local transport.

Taxi Service

The most common means of transport to move around Dubai is the local taxi. There are basically two kinds of taxis in Dubai –
a. Metered Taxis: Metered taxis are cream coloured and are run by the Dubai Transport Corporation. They charge a pick-up fee in addition to per kilometer fare.
b. Non-metered Taxis: Non-metered taxis are by far cheaper than the metered ones. They charge a negotiable fare.

In addition, there are charted taxis available at the airport. These taxis move guests from the airport to the city-centre or to the respective hotels. However, most of the hotels in Dubai have their own shuttle service to and from the airport. In addition to road taxis, there are water taxis in Dubai too. These are called “abras” and Dubai Creek is the place you can get to in order to hire one.

While heading for Dubai, there are a number of things that you should carry with you. Here’s a checklist.

Passport/ Visa: An important fact to note is that US citizens do not require a visa to get into UAE. If a US citizen is planning to stay at most for a month’s duration, s/he will get a free tourist visa stamp on arrival in Dubai.

Sunscreen lotion: The scorching sun of Dubai means you always need to carry a high SPF sunscreen lotion.

Hat: A straw hat to protect against the sharp sunrays is a must for walks outside. Cap will also do.

Sunglasses: Dubai’s skies are quite clear, especially in summer months, so there is glaring light in the daytime. A good idea is to go for strong UV-filtered sunglasses. One can buy one from here as well as there is a massive selection and, on top of that, most of the designer brands come at relatively cheaper rates.

Jacket: Though it may seem ironical, do carry a light jacket with you as the air-conditioning in hotels and shopping malls is freezing cold at times while the sun is bellowing out heat outside. To protect you against this sudden cold-hot antithesis, a jacket is a must.

Loose cotton wear: For casual dress up take loose-fitting cotton wear with you. Women should wear below the knee shorts, skirts and trousers. Shirt sleeves have to be up to the elbow.

Stole: While long skirts and lowers are “in” in Dubai, the fact remains that the culture of this place is deeply rooted in conservatism. The more traditional the place, the more modest the attire – this is the rule in Dubai. So carry a stole or light shawl with you for a quick cover-up!

Toiletries: You do not need to carry much as almost all brands under the sun are available here. Moreover, French cosmetics are cheaper in Dubai because it is tax-free, as against France itself.

• Dubai Museum in Al Fahidi Fort

Constructed within the marvelously reinstated Al Fahidi Fort, which was built around 1787 to protect the city against attacks and invasion, the diverse collection of exhibits restored in the museum offers a close glance into the rich culture and historical heritage. It got refurbished in 1971 for being used as a museum and its colorful panoramas vividly depict everyday life during the days before oil’s discovery took place. Scenes from the Creek, mosques, date farms, deserts, marine life and traditional Arab houses are recreated by galleries. Some exhibits also portray pearl diving including weights of pearl merchants, their scales and sheaves. Plus, there are some timeless artifacts from various excavations in the emirate that were recovered from the graves that dated back to the third millennium BC.

• Al Ahmadiya School

Al-Ahmadiya School, being the oldest school in Dubai was built in 1912. This school was inaugurated by a pearl merchant who happened to be a philanthropist and his name was Ahmed Bin Dalmouk. Initially, Al-Ahmadiya School used to teach only a limited number of subjects like basic math, Arabic language and grammar and Islamic studies to about 200 boys, however, later, many other languages were also taught. Seating arrangement for students were made in such a way that the students used to sit on mats made from the leaves of palm trees. As the time passed by, with the opening of other schools around 1920s, Al-Ahmadiya school was closed and then got re-opened in 1930s. Later, in 1965, the school got closed officially and since then, it has been restored as a museum of education of public.

Besides the location of this Emirate, there are somehow very few attractions in the Fujairah city. First and foremost, the city is a business center, with not much exciting environment like that of other emirates in the UAE. Some interesting landmarks are: the fort, which is situated just outside the city and receives a number of visitors who stroll in the gardens. The Indian Ocean is amazingly close to the emirate, however some parts of the beach are not considered good enough to swim. A very interesting boat trip could be organized to one of the several islands situated in the Gulf of Oman, which could end up in being one memorable trip.

With its smallest size out of the seven emirates, Ajman is located centrally on the Western coast of the UAE. The capital of this Emirate is the Ajman city and it is situated at the small creek of It is always a great pleasure to spend the day at the Ajman beach around white sand, and clear waters under the warm sun. Spotting dolphins is also a recreational activity that is enjoyed the most in the emirate. At restaurants and hotels, alcohol is easily available and its not prohibited in this Emirate.

Abu Dhabi

The biggest of all the seven emirates of the Arab, Abu Dhabi is the Federal capital of the UAE. It is spread over a region of 26,000 square miles and the widely spread Southern Gulf’s shallow waters extends from the Qatar peninsula occupies an area of 26,000 square miles. It is the capital of the Arab Emirates; however it is not the biggest city which happens to be Dubai. Despite the fact that its size is not so large, it has about 1 million people inhabiting Abu Dhabi. Since it Is the center of the Government activities, it remains as the heart of political affairs of the United Arab Emirates. The city has evolved as one of the exhilarating cities in the Middle East.

Beaches in Dubai

One extended stretch with an array of hotels, restaurants and clubs scattered all over the place constitute all the beaches in Dubai. Jumeirah Road, comprise of the largest stretch and is also called as the Jumeirah beach. At Al Mamzar Park in Deira Dubai, there is a beautiful and a well known beach that is another feather under the cap of Dubai beaches. These Dubai beaches have the white and soft sands spread all over that give them a scenic view. The serene turquoise waters add to the serenity of the place spreading a milieu full of tranquility. During the pleasant months of winter, like January, beaches are crowded with flocks of people enjoying the opulence of the ambience. A majority of people who visit beaches are mostly Russian and European. In fact, it is surprising to see a lot of Russian signs along the coastline.

The beaches are usually over crowded on weekends (Fridays and Thursdays), therefore, parking of cars is not an easy situation. One can also easily hire a taxi to reach the seashore areas and beaches from any corner of the city and you will not end up burning a whole in your pocket as they are cheap and spare you from the hassles involved in parking. Another alternative is boarding a bus to the respective destinations; however buses are not very dependable. The entry to some beaches in the city of Dubai like The Palm Jumeirah Beach Park is chargeable, however, at some beaches, there is no fee charged and entry is free.

Jumeirah Beach

This beach is away from the Dubai City Centre only by the distance of 25 minutes drive. World’s only seven star hotel Burj Al Arab and the luxurious Jumeirah Beach Hotel are situated on this beach, making it world famous. You can plan a visit to Burj Al Arab accordingly. This beautiful beach extends up to a few kilometers. It is never overly crowded and lifeguards are always around, throughout the day, performing their duty. Many entertainment facilities like Barbeques and restaurants are available on this exclusive beach. Jumeirah beach is a very safe and secured beach. Due to the shallow levels of water, it is one of the safest beaches for children and the elderly. There is an added advantage of a road that is situated parallel to the beach, so you can drive through and select your favorite spot to saunter and cherish the seashore.

Mamzar Beach

In Dubai, Mamzar is a very popular park and one of the precincts of the mesmerizing park is the splendid beach of Mamzar, known as the Mamzar beach. Since this beach is one border of the park, therefore, entry to the beach takes place through this park and it is of course chargeable. So someone who wants to visit this beach is required to purchase tickets and enter through the park that leads to the beach. From the city centre, Mamzar beach is also at about 25 to 30 minutes drive but in the opposite direction as in Jumeirah beach. This beach is surely constructed for the holiday makers. It has interesting spots and facilities like chalets, barbeque spots, etc to attract more and more visitors.

Jebel Ali Beach in Dubai

The beach known as Jebel Ali Beach is also only at a distance of 40 km from the Dubai City. There are a lot of things that bring fame and popularity to the beach which prove to be a great help for instance, Golf clubs, holiday hotels and resorts. But it is very famous because of the most spectacular developments as the Palm Island development and the luxurious apartments in the Jebel Ali. In general, these beaches do not have huge and enormous waves. Mamzar beach is just like a swimming pool, and has pleasant waves on windy days. If you have wind surfing on your mind, you probably would have to wait for a good day. On Thursday evenings, Dubai beaches are generally crowded and the celebration continues till Friday, the weekend in Dubai.
