Brain-Controlled Wheelchair Is "95 Percent Accurate"

It may not look like much at first glance, but researchers in Japan have pulled off a Jedi mind trick of sorts for directing electric wheelchairs.

Carmaker Toyota and research lab RIKEN have created a wheelchair that can be controlled by thought, perhaps heralding improved mobility for the severely disabled and elderly.

The device scans brain waves through sensors in a cap. In 125 thousandths of a second, the brain-controlled wheelchair can turn a thought into a command to turn the chair left or right or to move it forward. To stop, however, the user must puff out his or her cheek, activating a sensor placed there.

Said to be about 95 percent accurate, the wheelchair improves on the speed and precision of previous brain-machine interfaces, according to results released June 29.

To best pilot the wheelchair, don't try too hard, suggested RIKEN scientist Andrzej Cichocki, leader of the project.

"It works best if you imagine playing the piano with either hand while turning the wheelchair or, for instance, jogging, to [make the chair] move forward," Cichocki said. "After two to four weeks of training, the accuracy is nearly perfect and it becomes effortless."

There are currently no plans to put the brain-controlled wheelchair into production, as tests are still in the preliminary phases, he added. For example, the machine has only been tried with relatively young, healthy subjects so far.

But that doesn't mean the researcher is sitting still.

Cichocki wants to reduce the training time for new users and improve the software so that it will be able to, for instance, sense imagined letters to spell out words as a communication aid.

How about driving a car? "No," he laughed, "but maybe it could change the radio station."

ALEXANDRIA, La. – Police said a 72-year-old woman woke up to discover a 27-year-old man dressed only in underwear trying to get into her house. A police report said the man was booked with burglary early Sunday.
The report noted the man appeared to be under the influence of an illegal substance, talking oddly and acting nervous.
The officer found clothing in the woman's back yard, but the suspect allegedly told the officer he wasn't wearing any when he entered.

Music teacher arrested for allegedly having sex with two students in a classroom

A fifth-grade teacher is under investigation in California after she apparently gave students a DVD containing material from a homemade sex tape. CBS 13 reports the teacher called one family after the error was caught and apologized profusely, asking them to spread the word to stop kids from seeing the video.

According to the station, the offending DVD starts with a menu screen that displays various school trips and functions. Click on one of them and "you see kids in a classroom sharing stories. They then start clapping and the video suddenly cuts to sex."

The teacher, according to CBS 13, called one family's home the day after the DVD was sent and apologized profusely, "asking the man and his wife to call every parent they knew to stop their kids from seeing the DVD too."

"All she could say was that it was a horrible mix-up," said one father.

CBS 13 reports that the local school district is investigating the case, but that it is unlikely that teacher, who is well-liked and respected, will lose her job.

But there is good news in all of this. School officials say a new, more appropriate, DVD will be sent to students in the coming days.

A former music teacher arrested for allegedly having sex

with two students in a classroom will serve nine months in

jail and five years' probation. Ranee Sue Proper, 42,

was sentenced June 3 after pleaded guilty to one count of

criminal sexual conduct. Her name will also be placed on the

Michigan State Sex Offender Registry.

The objective of this project is to provide the secure
communication over the network using both public key and
private key cryptosystems. This is double fold encryption
technique. This uses DES algorithm to encrypt the message and
it uses the RSA algorithm to encrypt the DES key. This
technique overcomes key management problem of secret key
cryptosystems and slower encryption problem of public key
cryptosystems. It uses random DES key generated by the sender
client, & it is encrypted using RSA-Public-Key to provide more
security. By the implementation of the ClientServer technology
we are able to use User Datagram Protocol (UDP) mechanism and
through datagram socket programming the end user is able to
send and receive the encrypted and decrypted messages over the
network.

MOSCOW, May 27 (Reuters) - Russian police have taken into care a 5-year-old girl who has been shut up in a flat in the company of cats and dogs for her entire life, police said on Wednesday.

The girl, who lived in the Eastern Siberian city of Chita, could not speak Russian and acted like an dog when police took her into care.

"For five years, the girl was 'brought up' by several dogs and cats and had never been outside," a police statement said.

"The unwashed girl was dressed in filthy clothes, had the clear attributes of an animal and jumped at people," it said.

The flat had no heat, water or sewage system.

A police spokeswoman said the girl, known as Natasha, is being monitored by psychologists in an orphanage. Her mother was being questioned but her father has not been found yet.

She appears to be about 2-years-old, though her real age is five, refuses to eat with a spoon and has taken on many of the gestures of the animals with which she lived, police said.

"When carers leave the room, the girl jumps at the door and barks," the police said.

Feral children, the stuff of folklore all over the world, usually exhibit the behaviour of the animals with whom they have had closest contact, a condition known as the Mowgli Syndrome after the fictional child from Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book" who was raised by wolves in the jungle.

Such children have usually built strong ties with the animals with whom they lived and find the transition to normal human contact extremely traumatic. (Reporting by Guy Faulconbridge, editing by Farah Master)
