In the late 1970s, author Warren Fellows and two of his friends had the perfect scheme: they would traffic heroin between Australia and Thailand, concealing it flawlessly in high-tech, invisible compartments in suitcases. The money was there, and the process seemed foolproof--especially because they hadn't gotten caught in all their prior attempts at smuggling. But in 1978, all that would change, and Fellows would spend the next twelve years of his life enduring violations of his human rights of unimaginable hideousness.

Fellows, convicted in Thailand, spent these twelve years in Bangkok's infamous Bang Kwang prison, witnessing atrocities committed by both prison officials and his fellow inmates. He survived countless torturous beatings, was forced to eat rats, and endured solitary confinement under terrifyingly inhumane conditions. On a daily basis, Fellows also witnessed the torture and execution of those around him, their screams as common as the insects and vermin in his cell. Many of the prisoners in Bang Kwang turned to heroin--the vice that landed Fellows there in the first place--to escape their daily nightmares, and the prison guards often helped feed this deadly addiction.

Fellows, now a free man, has lived to write about these twelve ghastly years. He has captured the filth, pain, anger, hopelessness, and torture of life in a Thai prison with vivid, engrossing detail and brutal honesty.

I wish that I could say that I found this book to be intelligent and insightful, however, I can't. It does not take a rocket scientist to recognize that drug trafficking is a risky business that in all probability will result in imprisonment for the participants. Fellows does not attempt to argue that what he did was wrong. Quite the contrary, he owns up to the fact HE committed a serious crime, then goes on to fill the rest of his 204 pages with a lot finger-pointing. Too bad the finger is never pointed at himself.

As far as mechanics are concerned, Fellows' writing style is underdeveloped and his descriptions are vague at best. This subject is one that fascinates a lot of people and he has had a first-hand experience (horrible though it was) that the majority of the population will never, ever know. Had he taken some time, or sought some assistance with his writing, he could have really delivered a powerful account of his time in Thai prison. He never develops any of... Read more

This is more of a outline for a book than anything else. Its hard to believe that this guy wrote about 4000 days in a Thai jail and had so little to say. There is very little detail to what went on day to day or even about the author's life inside. He says that he became very good friends with a man from New York, but he mets this guy, gets to be pals with him and then the guy from NY dies in the space of just one or two pages. He never even gives a clear understanding of his Thai language skills or the relationship between the Thais and the foriegners. A reader above said that the writing was "flawless". No way, I am a very poor writer and have most likely made many mistakes in what your reading now. So think about it.. If a guy like me found errors in it, you know its bad.

This book is, to some extent, a memoir of Warren Fellows' experience with being imprisoned in Thailand for 12 years. Mr. Fellows, a native of Australia, was sentenced to life in prison for attempting to smuggle heroin out of Thailand to Australia. During his trail and imprisonment, Mr. Fellows serves time at several different facilities in Thailand. Finally after 12 years of a life sentence, he is pardoned by the King and deported back to Australia.

The prologue of the book begins by describing a scene involving a French prisoner who had a "problem" with the local insects. The scene, which is something right out of a horror movie, is described in excellent detail, enough to make my stomach churn. However, the book went downhill fast from there. The writing in the book is below average. I did not feel that the chapters flowed together at all. If buying a fancy and expensive stroller crossed your mind, don't waste your time or money. Several years ago, we were looking for a stroller for my first child. We look over 50 different brands and models all over SoCal, no kidding (my husband is VERY picky). We found this one, overall was the best for our necessities. Let me tell you, after 3 years the ONLY complaint that I have is you can't overload the basket at the bottom because it falls. But hey, this stroller survived 2 kids and still looks awesome for a third one! BEST PURCHASE EVER!! My kids loved it, I love it and after this baby I am going to sell it on Craig List...that's called "GOOD INVESTMENT"

We bought this car seat and stroller duo because we were trying to save money, and boy are we happy we did! The snugride car seat is one of the safest rated car seats and is not too heavy to carry around. The stroller maneuvers really well because of its large wheels and is a pleasure to take walks with. It has a huge basket underneath and reclines fully so that even newborns can go for a stroll. The car seat clips on and off very easily which makes transferring a sleeping baby no big deal. I especially like the convenient cell phone/keys compartment on the handle. All in all, this is a great product for a great price!

I'm a first time mom and have used this for 3 months now. I love the car seat. It is nicely padded and sturdy. It fits well in most shopping carts and can fit in a restaurant booth. It is easy to clean. It is a little heavy, I usually have to use both hands to carry it but it isn't impossible. I really love the stroller!! It has such a smooth ride and maneuvers like a dream. It has great clearance. I have only used it with the car seat, which is securely strapped to the stroller. The overlapping hoods keep baby dry, even in a down pour. There is a clear sun shaded portion of the stroller hood that lets you see baby while you are on the move. No need to stop and check. I bought two of these Graco Stages Travel Lite cribs for my baby -- one to use as a bassinet in our bedroom and one for naps and playtime downstairs. I chose this over the larger standard-size pack n plays because it fits through standard size doorways, which makes it so convenient to move around the house (only two of the four corners is on wheels, though, so you have to lift one end and drag it to move).

The "mattress" it comes with is a really thin and hard board, and I looked all over online to find something to make it more comfortable. Then I came across the bassinet pads made by Babies R Us -- the 31 x 18 x 1 size fits perfectly. BRU makes two sizes of bassinet pads so make sure you get the right one. The Carter's changing pad cover also fits perfectly over both mattresses as a sheet.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, because I too was initially really happy with this bassinet. Our brand new Notting Hill Bassinet fell apart with only a few weeks worth of use. (SEE PHOTO GALLERY!) We barely used it, followed all of the installation directions carefully, and our child was well within the weight limit. We have a 3.5 week old (now roughly 8 pounds) who actually doesn't even spend that much time in it. This morning I noticed a roughly 6 inch tear in the side stitching, which is essentially what holds the mattress of the bassinet up. The 6 plastic side straps are a bit deceiving because they are cosmetic vs. functional - in other words, there is really little holding the mattress (and your baby up) other than cloth that is stitched around the metal bars. If the stitching goes, so does the mattress. I am in the process of contacting Graco regarding this, but wanted to alert others first. This is not a cosmetic flaw. It is a potentially dangerous one. My husband and I purchased the Chicco travel system for our first child as a newborn. So far I have no complaints. We compared this system to several Graco models, but found that this was worth the extra money. The stroller itself has far more control when driving it. Very sturdy..and doesn't wobble like the Gracos. I found that it is especially nice if you are taller and therefore especially nice for the Dads. All of the other systems we looked at, my husband and I would both have to slump to push it, because the handle is so low. The material is durable and weather resistant. And the base of the car seat is adjustable to conform to your back seat and there is a built in level on the base to insure the base in positioned and secured evenly and acurately. Only small complaint is that when the car seat is in place in the stroller, it limits the amount of storage underneath the stroller making hard to put something large, like a diaper bag underneath. I just bought the Chicco Key Fit Travel system in "Romantic" and LOVE it! I knew I wanted this stroller having talked to many people who currently use it. It has great safety ratings and is light weight yet durable. It comes in quite a few color choices but Romantic was only viewable online. No stores have it in stock to look at which is unfortunate because it is an awesome pattern. It does look like the color swatch on the chicco website but even better in person. It is so gender neutral with the black/grey/white but the small pattern of the dk grey gives it a softer feel. It is better than what I expected and a very modern look. I almost went with the "cubes" pattern but now having seen the Romantic I am very happy with my choice! It will be great for our baby girl and any future babies. No need to buy a different color if we have a boy later. Stores are missing out by not having this pattern in stock at the store to see!

I gave this 2 stars instead of just 1 because I liked the neutral pattern, and it looks nice and the stroller seems to be pretty good although we've only been able to use it a few times due to the weather where I live. I was disappointed when I got this that the base for the carseat did not adjust up and down but once we installed it that was okay because it reclined enough that the baby wasn't flopping forward. When we first got this you could not buy a 2nd base for another vehicle, now that you can I won't be buying one because we are not using this carseat anymore. It was a little difficult getting the carseat in and out of the base at first but now after using it for a few months the seat won't even lock into the base correctly (NOT good if we were to get into an accident!) and is extremely difficult to get it out of the base, I practically gave my baby whiplash jerking and pulling because it was stuck so bad. I bought this basically for the stroller. i like the design, and the stroller was easy to set up.. The carseat is kinda cheap feeling. The stroller is nice, and easy to push. i gave this item 4 stars based on the stroller. The carseat could have been better, the sun canopy is really flimsy. (but this is just a back up carseat for me.) For the price you pay, this is a decent travel system.

I bought 3 of these systems now. They're easy to use and will last quite a while. Assembly is minimal and easy. The only pain point about this thing is making sure the car seat is securely locked into it's base. It's easy to seat it without locking it, you have to push until it clicks which anything in the base will prevent it from doing so (like a dirty paper towel or so).

The other thing is the price point and any extra bases for the car seats are quite expensive.

For anyone who is a fan of 'alien invasion' movies, sci-fi in general, or just good-old storytelling, the original 'V' mini-series is an absolute classic. The story begins with the arrival of 50 gigantic spacecraft over 50 major cities around the world; a civilization of human-like beings have come to ask for our aid in saving their dying planet. Over the film's 3+ hours, our 'visitors' go from friend to foe, and humanity faces the prospect of enslavement by a facist regime, not unlike in World War II, this time on a world-wide scale. V was (and still is) unique in its ability to weave together action and drama, along with some sci-fi elements, to create a 'morality tale' of sorts. I must admit, there were a couple of scenes that still leave me choked up. The mini-series debuted on NBC in the Spring of 1983 and was followed by an excellent sequel, 'The Final Battle,' a year later. Like many, I was a BIG fan of both the "V" mini-series as a kid. Though even as a kid I found the dumbed-down weekly series to be sub-par, which is ironic considering I was the target demographic NBC was looking for. In rewatching the mini-series' as an adult it's apparent that "V: The Final Battle," while good, was also inferior to Ken Johnson's original. It's a shame he wasn't allowed to guide the further installments, "V" would probably still be on the air today in some form.

I wanted to clear up some of the confusion I'm seeing in these postings. First of all there is no missing footage, the mini-series is not cut in half. This DVD is exactly what it is billed as, "V - The Original Mini-Series." The original "V" was two parts which ran over two nights in 1983. 'V'

Kenneth Johnson's superb 1983 mini-series might have dated visually, but this is easily overshadowed by the power of his writing and direction. 'V' is perhaps as fine an example of an alien invasion/conspiracy theory you will ever see, never equalled by The X-Files or the risible Independence Day (please compare the opening arrival sequences of these two films - homage my ass, ID4 is simply an inferior rip-off).

Populated by dozens of characters - the film has in excess of 90 speaking parts - this story centres, initially, around a young medical student called Julie Parrish (Faye Grant). It is through her that other characters come together to ally against the invading 'Visitors'. These characters cross all colour, class and religious lines to unite against the fascist, genocidal alien regime. The analogies to McCarthyism (with the witch-hunts for the Conspiracy of Scientists) and Nazism (genocide) are drawn sharply and early on.

This book is Pre -tsunami. & Pre-enviromental-ban for Sipadan

CONS:
1) This edition is basically the same as the 2nd edition. If you have #2 then you don't really need #3. Just call ahead and make sure the LDS info is correct.

2) Although some of the information may have been updated since the 2nd edition, sloppy editing ruins the book. Maps are not on the page indexed and are not on the page referred to in the paragraph. You'd really expect better editing and not just #2 regurgitated with add-on info.

3) Many of the contributors also have their own Dive Guide/Book published, so you may find some duplicate info.

4) Doesn't list all major dive shops in the area, (but it comes pretty close). Doesn't list dive shops on the smaller islands (not even reputable ones).

5) Publishing company extremely rude (Periplus Singapore) and unhelpful to the public when called at the number listed.

Picking this up was a spur of the moment decision and one I'm quite happy with. As only an occasional diver (pesky right eustacian tube) there isn't much chance I'll get to even a quarter of the sites listed here but by golly there are a lot. All sorts of mouth water bits of info are slung the readers way and if you want some inspiration for your next dive holiday then flicking through this book is certainly a great way to make your credit cards quake in fear.

As to specifics, the book is well set out, nicely presented with lots of lovely photos and has plenty of information for budding dive holiday takers. Of course in any work of this kind there is always going to be the issue of information becoming out of date and therefore you really shouldn't take every contact detail etc provided here as gospel, but for heavens sake you are going to do some checking of this sort of stuff before you go so it's unlikely to ruin your holiday.

Despite all SE Asia - tsunami affected guides - say: "you can update online" you don't get lot of information on their website.
Practically half of the areas detailed by this book is affected by the tsunami. The information is good, but not certain due to all the problems in the area. I've been in the andaman beaches and the guide was usefull, but I would wait for next version of this book. Lonely Planet Thailand (the next version, tsunami updated) is ready in august 2005, I think. So it's worth waiting...

Although I didn't make it to half the places in this book, I certainly enjoyed reading about them, and more importantly, thoroughly enjoyed the places I did make it to.

Remember: this is the guide to use if you're only going to LOS (the Land of Smiles) to island hop. Use the general Thailand book if you want to see the mainland as well as the beaches (it will detail quite a few of the islands and beaches as well.)

I have read this book cover to cover twice. I currently own offshore real estate and want to buy more. The information provided is directly relevant to Thailand, but also provides good guidelines and practices for purchases elsewhere. The book is put forward in an easy to digest format which is not too technical for the average investor.

Bottom line, I found it extremely informative with current and useful information. If you are considering buying offshore real estate, this book is a must read.

This is the only book I've read concerning buying real estate in Thailand that is written by a lawyer. My Canadian friend and I both have copies of the book and enjoy discussing the sections. Other books on buying an abode in Thailand are written by an English business person and a Thai lady married to an American who lives in the U.S.A. Why trust your life savings to hear say? This book is written by an attorney. Many fine points gone over. I will be purchasing a condominium. Friends have set up corporations, leased land, built houses for their Thai wives. Some are horror stories, but they are true. I will be investing a large part of my nest egg in a condominium. Without a pension, I must not make a mistake. This book can help. For 625 baht at Asia Books, a must. The exchange rate keeps getting worse. This book even mentions not accepting the first exchange rate offered you by the banks, but to negotiate.

In early 1990, two hill tribe hunters stumbled across airplane wreckage in a remote area of north Thailand. The author's attempt to identify the aircraft and its mission, set him off on a hunt that went on for almost ten years. A lot of history was uncovered in the process - and some old mysteries were solved.

It turned out that the airplane had belonged to the famed American Volunteer Group (AVG) Flying Tigers. The author worked closely with surviving Flying Tiger pilots to identify the aircraft and its mission. Attempting to account for the pilot - a prisoner of the Japanese who was exfiltrated from Thailand under mysterious circumstances - led the author to the Free Thai Movement, Thailand's anti-Japanese underground. Working with Free Thai officers took the author to the OSS, the Office of Strategic Services, America's first strategic intelligemce service, and forerunner to the CIA.

The hunt turned into an adventure in the discovery of history. Interviews with AVG pilots, with Free Thai and OSS officers, gave the author a first hand look at some very colorful aspects of Wortld War II history that were little known in Thailand, and even less so to the world outside.

This book pulls together the pieces of a story that tells the history of AVG Flying Tiger, Free Thai and OSS operations in World War II Thailand - and of the hunt that brought that history into view.

I own this hardcover edition along with Solomon's Complete Asian Cooking book and her Encyclopedia of Asian Food. This is a physically large book, resplendent with lovely color photos and yummy recipes. I would use it for the Mee Grob alone, which I cannot get for love nor money in the Minneapolis area. The Kaeng Masaman is just like in the restaurants (I'm getting hungry) and the noodles with bbq'ed pork are great. This is a good book for those wanting to delve far into Thai cooking, but for more generic "world" cooks like me I find I actually reach more often for Solomon's "Complete Asian Cooking" book, which also has many tempting Thai recipes as well as recipes from at least 15 other Asian countries. However if it's only Thai you want, this is the book for you, complete with glossary of ingredients and notes on pronouncing Thai words. Beware Pad Thai lovers -- there's no recipe for it in this book.

Charmaine Solomon has written a wonderful book for all those interested in the flavours and tastes of Thai cuisine. Charmaine, now a long time resident of Sydney which boasts thousands of Thai restaurants, de-mystifies many of the staples of Thai cuisine. She easily conveys how to make a green curry paste from scratch, how to get the perfect textured fish cake and how to make a wonderful pepper and coriander marinade for chicken.

The only downside to the paperback version of this book compared to the hardback version is the lack of colour photos. I have tried many of the recipes and found her writing style easy to follow and her instructions concise and clear. Charmaine also adds cultural and historical notes to round out the full picture of this great cuisine. I have had the pleasure of attending a Thai cooking class conducted by Charmaine and her husband Rueben. The book is filled with the same infectious love for cooking Asian food as her class was.

Charmaine Solomon has some of the best receipes for the novice Thai cook. This book is full of her wonderful recipes that if followed carefully will never fail to help you produce quite an impressive feast. However, this book also comes in a hard cover edition that has not only similar or better recipes but also many more good photographs to inspire you by. This book literally pales in comparison, hence the three stars.

My husband and I love Thai food. We purchased several Thai and Asian cookbooks, but their complexity, ingredients, and organization were daunting for 2 newbies to Asian cooking. Then we chanced upon Linda Stephen's Complete Book of Thai Cooking. Attractive features include the color coded organization for each section of the cookbook, colorful photos scattered throughout, the very well designed page layout which clarifies the ingredients, usually 2-4 step directions, variations, and helpful comments. This user-friendly pattern makes it a breeze to follow the recipes. We started with the "Crispy Cucumber Salad" Delightful and easy! Next came "Scallops and Shrimp with Lemongrass and Coconut Milk." Wow! Scrumptious! My husband loves mussels, so "Mussels in Coconut Broth" became a weekly appetizer when mussels were available. We both love the simplicity of the recipes coupled with tasty results.
