Born in Myllykoski, Finland, in 1948, Sirkka began taking photographs aged twelve, inspired by her aunt Oili, a skilful amateur photographer. She studied film making at the Regent Street Polytechnic film school in London where, with Murray Martin and a number of other fellow students, she formed the Amber Collective.
In 1969, the collective moved to Newcastle, with a commitment to documenting working class communities, and in 1977 established the Side Photographic Gallery.
Sirkka is perhaps best known for her 1983 book entitled Byker, a seminal portrait of the terraced Newcastle community, eventually bulldozed to make way for the Byker Wall. She continued to photograph the people of the new Byker between 2004-2009, resulting in the book Byker Revisited and the film Today I'm with you. In addition, four films, Keeping Time, Byker, The Writing In The Sand and Letters to Katja, form part of her work.
Step by Step was another of Sirkka’s long-term commitments, and explored the dreams and realities of a group of mothers and daughters at a North Shields dancing school. Other key works include Writing in the Sand, which reflects the vibrant life of North East beaches while her work, The Coal Coast, captures the terrible beauty of the Durham coastline.
The 2011 UNESCO UK Memory of the World Register, inscribes Konttinen's photography and Amber's films as being of "outstanding national value and importance to the United Kingdom." newcastlegateshead

Sally Mann (born in Lexington, Virginia, 1951) is one of America’s most renowned photographers. She has received numerous awards, including NEA, NEH, and Guggenheim Foundation grants, and her work is held by major institutions internationally. Her many books include At Twelve (1988), Immediate Family (1992), Still Time (1994), What Remains (2003), Deep South (2005), Proud Flesh (2009), The Flesh and the Spirit (2010) and Remembered Light (2016). In 2001 Mann was named “America’s Best Photographer” by Time magazine. A 1994 documentary about her work, Blood Ties, was nominated for an Academy Award and the 2006 feature film What Remains was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2008. Her bestselling memoir, Hold Still (Little, Brown, 2015), received universal critical acclaim, and was named a finalist for the National Book Award. In 2016 Hold Still won the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction. Mann is represented by Gagosian Gallery, New York. She lives in Virginia.

Sergey Maximishin is winner of many international and national competitions and festivals (twice prizewinner of World Press Photo, for example), exhibited in Russia and abroad. He collaborates with the world’s leading media, teacher photos, which raised already a generation of great photographers.
Sergey Maximishin was born in 1964. Spent childhood in Kerch, the Crimea. Moved to Leningrad in 1982. Served in the Soviet army as a photographer the Soviet Military Force Group on Cuba from 1985 to 1987. Graduated from Leningrad Politechnical Inctitute in 1991 with a B.A. in physics. Worked in the laboratory of scientific and technical expertise in the Hermitage Museum. Graduated from St-Petersburg Faculty of photojournalism in 1998. In 1999-2003 was a staff photographer for the “Izvestia” newspaper. Since 2003 works with a German agency “Focus”.

Mike Yamashita has combined his dual passions of photography and travel for over 25 years as a shooter for National Geographic and, more recently, with his film production company, Saga Pictures.
Specializing in Asia, Yamashita has covered Vietnam and the Mekong River, Marco Polo's journey to China, the Great Wall, and the DMZ between North and South Korea, as well as almost every aspect of Japanese culture from samurai to fish markets.
A story on legendary Ming Dynasty admiral and explorer Zheng He first appeared in the July 2005 issue of National Geographic and was released as a documentary feature film in 2006. The film, The Ghost Fleet, won Best Historical Documentary at the 2006 New York International Film Festival. A book, Zheng He, was published in 2006.
Yamashita's other books include In the Japanese Garden, Mekong: Mother of Waters, and Marco Polo: A Photographer's Journey. Marco Polo is also the subject of his award-winning National Geographic Channel documentary, Marco Polo: The China Mystery Revealed, in which Yamashita retraces the 13th-century Venetian's epic excursion to China.
A frequent lecturer and teacher at workshops around the world, Yamashita has received numerous industry awards, including those from the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) Pictures of the Year, the New York Art Directors Club, and the Asian-American Journalists Association. Major exhibitions of his work have opened throughout Asia, in Tokyo, Beijing, Seoul, Hong Kong, and Singapore, as well as in Rome, Frankfurt, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. His images of Korea's DMZ were featured in an exhibit at the Visa Pour L'Images photojournalism festival at Perpignan, France, in 2005.
When not traveling, Yamashita lives in rural New Jersey, where he maintains a studio and an extensive stock library and is an active volunteer fireman.

THE SOUTH BRONX OF AMERICA | MEL ROSENTHAL

Mel Rosenthal's photographs document the burning of the South Bronx between 1975 and 1983. The portrait photographs depict the everyday lives of residents against backdrops of rubble, abandoned buildings, and destroyed city blocks as they struggle to survive "planned shrinkage," an urban planning strategy utilized from the 1960s-1980s to raze residential buildings in older urban areas and replace them with industrial parks. website

Mel Rosenthal was born in the South Bronx and grew up in the 1940's and 50's, close to the neighborhood where he made the photographs in his book, In the South Bronx of America. He attended P.S. 88, P.S. 28 (run by Hunter College), J.H.S. 22, and Taft High School, all in the South Bronx. Positive experiences at City College of New York fostered in Mel alternative ways of looking at the world. He received a P.h.D. in English Literature and American Studies from the University of Connecticut. His thesis was on the effect of alienation on American writers. He taught at Vassar College and the University of Connecticut before taking a journey of self-exploration to Africa.

In Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Mel learned photography by working as a medical photographer at the University Hospital. Part of his job involved photographing with Paolo Freire, a Brazilian linguist who was directing a UNESCO sponsored literacy project to teach people how to read and write by allowing them to discover the power of words and images. Mel's experiences in Africa ignited a passion for the documentary image and its uses and from that time on he has been a photographer.

Mel's South Bronx portrait project, his first sustained work, grew out of his teaching work at Empire State College in the South Bronx in the 1970's. When many South Bronx residents were driven out of their homes by fires and fled to their native Puerto Rico, Mel and writer John Brentlinger produced a documentary book in 1989 -- Villa Sin Miedo !Presente! -- about a successful land rescue community on the island. His project, Refuge, a touring exhibition of photographs with accompanying text by Jack Salzman, also has its roots in the South Bronx and is a record of the New Americans living in New York State and their experiences pursuing the American Dream.

Mel's work most often focuses on how changing social conditions influence individuals. He is known for his work in Nicaragua, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Vietnam. He was one of the founders of the Triage Project (a collective of photographers, doctors and writers documenting homelessness and the health care crisis in New York City) and of Impact Visuals, a collective photography agency. His work is represented by Image Works, an editorial photo agency.

Mel is Distinguished Professor of Art at SUNY/Empire State College, where he teaches photography and directs the college's photography program in New York City. He is the photography editor of culturefront, the magazine of the New York Council for the Humanities, and has been awarded fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. website

Margaret Courtney-Clarke was born in Namibia in 1949. After studying art and photography in South Africa, she spent the next four decades working as a photographer between Italy and the USA and across the African continent. Drawn to remote places, Courtney-Clarke has produced numerous award-winning books and her work has been exhibited and collected worldwide.

Courtney-Clarke’s eight major publications to date include her trilogy on the Art of African Women: Ndebele (1986), African Canvas (1991) and Imazighen (1996). They were translated into five languages, and enjoyed multiple editions and reprints for 20 years.

A Steidl publication entitled Cry Sadness into the Coming Rain (2017) marks a new phase in Courtney-Clarke’s photography. When she returned to re-establish a home in Namibia in 2009, the landscape once so familiar to her was undergoing rapid transformation, with intense rural–urban migration by those in search of a better life. In Cry Sadness, Courtney-Clarke turns her lens on the aspirations of the poor in their search for human dignity, on their quest for shelter in a ravaged land and on the environment in crisis. In his foreword to the book, David Goldblatt writes “[the photographs] are eloquent of raw existence and offer faint glimmers of hope, of life scratched from an appallingly inhospitable terrain in the face of overwhelming societal transition. Yet these photographs attain a searing grace which is in no sense false to the reality but is, on the contrary, a rare synthesis of what is there with an intensely heightened and uncompromisingly honest vision”. website

MARCUS BLEASDALE IS A DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHER

WHO USES HIS WORK TO INFLUENCE POLICY MAKERS AROUND THE WORLD.

Over the past fifteen years spent documenting some of the world’s most brutal wars Marcus has focused on campaigning against human rights abuses. He have been documenting these issues for Human Rights Watch and he is a contributing photographer for National Geographic Magazine.

Using his background in business and economics, he researches the sources of financing driving the conflicts, which usually leads to the mines, and the armed networks linked to them. Marcus covered the wars in Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Somalia, Chad and Darfur, Kashmir and Georgia.

Since 2000 Marcus has worked extensively in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo documenting a war funded by the extraction of the minerals used in every day electronic products. Marcus has partnered with international advocacy groups Human Rights Watch and the Enough Project to engage US and European politicians and multinational companies to change government policy and working practices.

Over the past two years Marcus has been working in the Central African Republic documenting the conflict in the region. The work from Central African Republic won the Amnesty International Award for Media in 2014 and the prestigious Robert Capa Gold Medal from the Overseas Press Club of America in 2015.

Marcus has published three books "One Hundred Years of Darkness" documenting life along the Congo River after the overthrow of Mboutu "The Rape of a Nation" documenting the exploitation of natural resources in Eastern Congo and most recently "The Unravelling" documenting the brutal conflict in the Central African Republic.

Virgilio Carnisio si avvicina al mondo fotografico nel 1961-62 frequentando un corso di fotografia pubblicitaria presso l’Enalc (Ente nazionale addestramento lavoratori commercio). Dal 1968 inizia un lavoro di documentazione analitica del capoluogo lombardo, mosso dall’esigenza interiore di immortalare quegli aspetti della città destinati a scomparire. Soggetti privilegiati sono vecchi cortili, case di ringhiera, osterie e antiche botteghe, attraverso cui intende restituire l’immagine della cosiddetta “vecchia Milano”. Paesaggio, architettura ed insegne commerciali diventano il mezzo privilegiato attraverso cui Carnisio riesce, nel corso degli anni, ad offrire un ritratto completo della città, non solo dal punto di vista paesistico, ma anche dei cambiamenti sociali in atto.
Da allora affina sempre più la sua ricerca, finalizzando il proprio linguaggio espressivo nell’ambito del reportage in bianconero di impostazione prevalentemente sociale, con cui affronta con successo altre realtà significative, come la sua amata Valsesia, l’Italia, l’Europa, l’Asia, fino all’America.
Numerose sue fotografie sono apparse su giornali e riviste, libri e enciclopedie. Sue fotografie fanno parte di collezioni pubbliche e private, e di lui hanno scritto alcuni tra i più importanti giornalisti, critici ed esperti del settore, pubblicando redazionali su prestigiose testate.

Marc Riboud est né en 1923 à Lyon. A l'Exposition Universelle de Paris en 1937, il prend ses premières photographies avec le petit Vest-Pocket offert par son père pour ses 14 ans. En 1944, il participe aux combats dans le Vercors. De 1945 à 1948, il fait des études d'ingénieur à l'Ecole Centrale de Lyon et travaille en usine. A l'issue d'une semaine de vacances prise pour photographier le Festival de Lyon, il oublie de retourner à l'usine et décide de se consacrer à la photographie.

En 1953, il obtient une publication dans le magazine Life pour une photo d'un peintre de la Tour Eiffel. Sur l’invitation d’Henri Cartier-Bresson et de Robert Capa, il rentre à Magnum. Ce dernier l'envoie à Londres “pour voir les filles et apprendre l'anglais”. Il n'apprend pas l'anglais mais photographie intensément.

En 1955, via le Moyen-Orient et l'Afghanistan, il se rend par la route en Inde, où il reste un an et d'où il gagne la Chine pour un premier séjour en 1957. Après un séjour de trois mois en URSS en 1960, il couvre les indépendances en Algérie et en Afrique noire. Entre 1968 et 1969, il effectue des reportages au Sud ainsi qu’au Nord Vietnam, où il est l’un des rares photographes à pouvoir entrer.

Depuis les années 80, il est régulièrement retourné en Orient et en Extrême-Orient et a exposé à Paris, Londres, New York, Beijing, Hong Kong, Bilbao…

Marc Riboud a publié de nombreux livres, dont les plus connus sont “Les trois bannières de la Chine”, ed. Robert Laffont, “Journal”, ed. Denoël, “Huang Shan, Les Montagnes célestes”, ed. Between 1968 and 1969 he’s one of the few photographers allowed to travel in South and North Vietnam. In 1976 he becomes president of Magnum and resigns three years later ; since the 1980’s he keeps travelling at his own tempo. Marc Riboud published many books, among which the most famous are « The three banners of China », ed. Robert Laffont, « Journal », ed. Denoël, « Huang Shan, Capital of Heaven », ed. Arthaud / Doubleday, « Angkor, the serenity of Buddhism », ed. Imprimerie Nationale / Thames & Hudson, « Marc Riboud in China », ed. Nathan / Harry N. Abrams…
In 2004 his retrospective is exhibited at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris and visited by 100 000 people. Numerous museums trough Europe, as well as United States, China and Japan regularly show his work. He received many awards, among which two Overseas Press Club, the Time-Life Achievement, the Lucie Award and the ICP Infinity Award.

THE STRENGTH OF SAHARAWI WOMEN | RAFFALE PETRALLA

Sahara woman has always played a fundamental role in her own society, that indeed is a matriarchal one.
During the war against Morocco (1975-1991) women have been forced to run away and refugee in the most hostile part of Sahara desert: the Hammada.
Without any kind of help from men, who were engaged in the battles many kilometers from there, Saharawi women have been able to organize the community life in the refugees camps, where a part of the Saharawi population is still living( about 250.000 persons). They took charge both of the logistic, through the construction of tends, houses, schools, hospitals and the political, social and cultural dimension.

In fact nowdays,lot of them are in charge of important institutional assignments and all of them take part at the women meetings that are often very influent in many governative decisions.
They wish their population could return in the territory they were forced to leave and where their relatives are still living under occupation; they are also divided from a 2400 km wall surrounded by mines built by Morocco in order to deny them the possibilty to return to their own country.

A London born photographer, Linda Wisdom is self taught in street photography. Her style is influenced by many of the past and current masters including Cartier-Bresson, Vivian Maier, Saul Leiter, Alex Webb, Helen Levitt, John Free, Ernst Haas. Mostly post processing in black and white, her candid compositions focus mainly on light and shadow play, geometry and lines, decisive moments and urban scenes. Linda has exhibited at the London Photo Festival and SoShowMe group shows. She has won many photography competitions and contests, including ThePrintSpace themed awards, as well as being a finalist in the World Open of Photography. Linda has also judged many competitions and also runs a Meetup group called We Shoot People which is a London Street Photography Group for anyone interested in street photography. Lee Friedlander (born July 14, 1934) is an American photographer and artist. In the 1960s and 70s, working primarily with 35mm cameras and black and white film, Friedlander evolved an influential and often imitated visual language of urban "social landscape," with many of the photographs including fragments of store-front reflections, structures framed by fences, posters and street-signs.

Friedlander studied photography at the Art Center College of Design located in Pasadena, California. In 1956, he moved to New York City where he photographed jazz musicians for record covers. His early work was influenced by Eugène Atget, Robert Frank, and Walker Evans. In 1960, the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation awarded Friedlander a grant to focus on his art and made subsequent grants in 1962 and 1977.

Some of his most famous photographs appeared in the September 1985 Playboy, black and white nude photographs of Madonna from the late 1970s. A student at the time, he was paid only $25 for her 1979 set, and in 2009, one of the images fetched $37,500 at a Christie's Art House auction.

Working primarily with Leica 35mm cameras and black and white film, Friedlander's style focused on the "social landscape". His art used detached images of urban life, store-front reflections, structures framed by fences, and posters and signs all combining to capture the look of modern life. monovisions

Leah Gordon is a multi-media artist who curates, collects, writes and directs. She works across a variety of media including photography, film and installations, often including commissioned sculpture and painting. In the 1980's she wrote lyrics, sang and played for the feminist folk punk band, 'The Doonicans'. Leah makes work on Modernism and architecture; the slave trade and industrialisation; and grassroots religious, class and folk histories. Gordon’s film and photographic work has been exhibited internationally including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; the Dak’art Biennale; the National Portrait Gallery, UK; Parc de la Villette, Paris and NSU Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale. Her photography book 'Kanaval: Vodou, Politics and Revolution on the Streets of Haiti' was published in June 2010. She is the co-director of the Ghetto Biennale in Port-au-Prince, Haiti; was a curator for the Haitian Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale; was the co-curator of ‘Kafou: Haiti, History & Art’ at Nottingham Contemporary, UK; on the curatorial team for ‘In Extremis: Death and Life in 21st Century Haitian Art’ at the Fowler Museum, UCLA and was the guest curator for the 2016 NYC Outsider Art Fair. In 2015 Leah Gordon was the recipient of the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Travel Award for Central America and the Caribbean. website

What we find on the streets of Jacmel at carnival time unravels this statement with acerbity, threat, imagination, grace and a wild surrealism. The whole event is swirling around in a miasma of warped historical retelling. This is the kind of history that would be making Henry Ford's palms a tad sweaty. And so it should. This is people taking history into their own hands and moulding it into whatever they decide. So within this Historical retelling we find mask after mask, but rather than concealing, they are revealing, story after story, through disguise and roadside pantomime. website

LÀO CAI PROVINCE OF NORTHERN VIETNAM | JACOB MAENTZ

Lao Cai province of northern Vietnam borders the Chinese border and is home to a number of different ethnic minorities that have lived in the area for centuries. I came to Vietnam with very few expectations as our time was relatively short and our tickets were bought over six months ago. The original purpose of this trip was a mini-vacation of sorts and out of necessity to leave the Philippines for my visa renewal. We flew into Hanoi and decide to head straight to Lao Cai Province after a couple of days in this fast pace city. Parts of Lao Cai are fairly popular tourist destinations because of the beautiful landscapes and colorful minorities that live there, especially the mountain city of SaPa. Because my initial inclination is always to go as far away from tourist hotspots as possible, we decided to first head to a town called Bac Ha. Bac Ha is well known for it’s large Sunday market, where locals and minorities come to sell their goods, but during the week the town is really low-key and a great place to start exploring the mountains of Lao Cai….

The mountains in this region are grande and the landscape is covered with corn, tea, rice and other agricultural crops. My first impression of the area was that it looked centuries old. The fields looked like they had been tilled for many years and the homes made of wood and mud added to the uniqueness of the landscape.
Indeed, this area has had it place in history primarily as a historic trading post between the Chinese, Vietnamese and different ethnic minority groups. Today, a number of the 54 recognized ethnic minorities of Vietnam still live in Lao Cai province, including the H’mong, Tay and Dzao people.

Like in most subsistence-based cultures a good portion of the day is spent tending to crops and preparing food. From our limited time in Lao Cai we got the impression that the women are the hardest workers and are often the ones doing these jobs. It was always the women we saw carrying the heavy loads and working in the fields. Although the men have their roles as well and often help in the fields, it’s the women we saw doing the bulk of the work. We were told that the men are fairly shy so it’s also the women who interact with tourists and sell their products in the market.

"Born and raised in Athens Greece was probably the governing factor why my love for landscape photography grew strong. Living in the concrete jungle always urged me to try and find an escape and photography was the means for me to achieve this. I am a self taught guy who started with baby steps in the film era and developed my skills much faster in the digital world. I enjoy being outdoors and a nice trek on a mountain or a coastal area will satisfy me like nothing else.

I am very fortunate living in a place that has pretty much everything alas in a much smaller scale, which by itself is a challenge since beauty needs to be found and that is no easy task in a country where its people don’t have much respect for the environment they live in. My goal through photography is that by capturing the natural and unspoilt landscape wherever this is possible to show the locals and visitors of the beauty that surrounds them in an effort to raise awareness.

I have passions and maybe some obsessions like shipwrecks, but I will photograph anything that will appear visually interesting in a landscape whether this is pure nature or includes a human “footprint”. I live by some photography rules and one of them is included in the few lines of Garry Winogrand above. I don’t seek to capture reality as everybody else sees it. My final images want to be the outcome of my personal interpretation of the scene in front of me. This is an ever going challenge but a challenge that I enjoy immensely and willing to face it with every opportunity given.

Sharing the beauty of the landscapes around me has also made me realize that there is something I want to equally share, and that is the knowledge I have gained throughout the explorations and encounters I had with nature and with people. Born in Breslau, Germany, Gutmann studied to be a painter under Otto Mueller before turning to photography shortly before he emigrated to the United States, where he became known for his vivid images of popular culture. Gutmann brought a foreigner’s view to the streets of California, where he saw with fresh eyes such astonishing (to him) phenomena as multiracial crowds, drive in movies and restaurants, drum majorettes, car parks and golf links, beauty contests, tattoo parlors, and movie marquees. He was fascinated by the status of the car as an American icon and photographed unusual license plates, decorated dashboards, decals, and hood ornaments. He also took a notable series of New York City in the 1940s. In Germany he worked as a photojournalist for Presse Photo before his arrival in the United States, when he worked as a photojournalist for Pix, Inc. (1936 1963). A professor at San Francisco State University from 1938 to 1973, Gutmann won a Guggenheim fellowship in 1978. His work has been published in major periodicals and is held by such collections as those of the Amon Carter in Fort Worth, San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art, and the Seagram Collection in New York. lumieregallery

LES GITANS ET LES SAINTES-MARIES DE LA MER | JEANNETTE GREGORI

Jeannette GREGORI est née le 4 août 1967 à Thionville. Elle vit à Strasbourg. Elle a séjourné aux Etats-Unis en 1993/1994 en tant que lectrice et a suivi des cours de photographie aux Beaux-arts de l’Université d’Indiana. Les voyages dans les banlieues et quartiers populaires de New York ou de la Louisiane lui ont donné envie de laisser une trace des fragments de vie croisées sur son chemin.

Elle a participé au programme d’échange linguistique franco-américain Fulbright en 2002/2003 et a vécu dans la région de Philadelphie. Son inspiration s’est nourrie de quelques photographes s’inscrivant dans la tradition du photoreportage ou de la photographie humaniste (Dorothea Lange, Mary Ellen Mark, Arlene Gottfried…).
De retour à Strasbourg, elle a suivi des cours d’expression photographique à l’école des Arts Décoratifs.En 2009, elle a exposé son travail sur les familles du Neuhof à La Ligue des Droits de l’Homme ainsi qu’à Amnesty International dans le cadre de la Journée de la Femme. Elle s’est intéressée aux communautés tsiganes lorsqu’elle a ressenti qu’il était nécessaire de poser sur elles un nouveau regard. Avant les mesures d’expulsions prononcées par le gouvernement français, le choix de photographier les enfants gitans, roms et manouches lui a permis de sensibiliser le public à l’ensemble de ces populations. La série Enfances Tsiganes se propose, avant tout, de susciter une émotion et développer la tolérance en mettant en lumière les regards des enfants ou l’amour prodigué par leurs parents.Pour elle, ses photos doivent au-delà de la souffrance personnelle ou collective porter l’espoir d’un renouveau ou d’une joie sous-jacente. La dimension intemporelle de la série Enfances Tsiganes tente de transmettre les valeurs séculaires chères aux communautés.

Par la suite, son travail s’est mis au service de la presse et du Conseil de l’Europe pour aider les familles roms de Strasbourg menacées d’expulsion.
Ses photos ont été exposées à la médiathèque André Malraux en 2009 puis au Conseil de l’Europe en 2010 afin d’appuyer les démarches du service Rom et Migration qui tendent à rétablir la dignité de ces communautés et de leurs enfants. Un deuxième volet de la série Enfances Tsiganes a été réalisé en Pologne en 2011 et en 2013 lors de l’ atelier d’artistes roms « Jaw Dikh! » à Czarna Gorà, près de Cracovie.
Une troisième série Les Gitans et les Saintes Maries de la Mer s’est construite lors du pèlerinage en Camargue en 2012, 2013 et 2015, elle représente la force d’âme et la foi du peuple gitan. Son travail s’est associé aux actions de l’UFAT (Union Française des Associations Tsiganes), de l’ EGAM (European Grassroots Anti-Racist Movement) afin de permettre la reconnaissance de la mémoire des disparus dans les camps d’internement.
Avec l’appui de la FNASAT (Fédération Nationale des Associations Solidaires d’ Actions avec les Tsiganes et les Gens du Voyage), elle explore dans ses récentes séries de photographies les nouvelles questions sociales (discrimination, familles, relogement, transformation des mentalités, ascension sociale…) qui touchent les Tsiganes de Strasbourg, Paris, Besançon, Agde mais aussi de Pologne et de République Tchèque.

John Bulmer was a pioneer of colour photography in the early 1960’s working for the Sunday Times Magazine from the very first issue till the 1970’s

He was brought up in Herefordshire, became a passionate photographer, and when he went to study engineering at Cambridge continued taking photographs- first for the University newspaper Varsity and then for Image, a picture magazine that he co-founded. He also started shooting stories on Cambridge for Queen Magazine, the Daily Express newspaper, and finally a story on the Night Climbers of Cambridge which sold to Life Magazine.

This ended his career at Cambridge, and he went up to London where he was offered a job as photographer on the Daily Express. At the time the Express was the foremost paper in Britain for photography, and did many assignments in association with Paris Match.

He soon started shooting stories for Town Magazine, a new fashion magazine that became well known for good photography, using others such as Terrence Donovan, David Bailey and Don McCullin. John Bulmer did many groundbreaking stories for them including; The Black Country, Nelson, The North, as well as overseas stories in South America, Africa, New Guinea and Indonesia.

The Sunday Times then produced the first of the Colour Supplements, later copied by all the newspapers. John Bulmer shared the cover of the first issue with David Bailey- a picture of a footballer he took surrounded by pictures of Jean Shrimpton’s armpit! This was a small start but John soon had a contract to shoot sixty pages a year, and travelled to nearly 100 countries on their behalf.

The writer Martin Harrison, in his book about photography in the 60’s “The Young Meteors” describes the start of the Colour Magazines:-

“The switch to colour was, therefore, quite sudden and few photographers were prepared for it.

John Bulmer was recognised immediately for having made the necessary adjustment and thinking specifically in terms of colour became one of the most prolific contributors of colour reportage to the Sunday Times Colour Section.

Many of Bulmer’s most important assignments were abroad, but he was also acknowledged as an adroit recorder of provincial Britain. His reputation as a recorder of the industrial cityscape was probably gained at Town, where he was responsible for stories on Nelson, Lancashire, The Black Country, and The North is dead”

His work was several times singled out for awards by the Design and Art Directors Club and he has had pictures shown at the Gallery of Modern Art in New York, the Photographers' Gallery in London, and the National Museum of Photography in Bradford

By the early seventies the Sunday Times changed course, looking for stories on “Crime, Middle class living and Fashion” as described to Bulmer by the new editor.

It was time for a change and John Bulmer moved sideways into making documentary films. He filmed a programme on the life of Van Gogh in the South of France, directed by Mai Zetterling, and went on to direct many films on travel and untouched tribes in the most inaccessible parts of the world. These were primarily shown on BBC, Nat Geo and Discovery Channel.

He has now returned to Herefordshire to catalogue and show his huge collection of still photographs, many of which have never been seen. Philippe Vermès
