There are free tools available for this, but they're not nearly as useful as the
more comprehensive paid tools.

For example, if you're using the Overture keyword tool for your research, be
warned, its results can't be trusted.
As my Special Projects Manager, Jay Stockwell, likes to point out, the
Overture tool shows you the SAME number of searches for all these
searches:

This is obviously nonsense.

The Overture tool is useful to give you a quick rough guide, but NOT for
serious research.

a keyword research tool is free and popular, how many competitors will
you have for the phrases you discover there?"

searching for images. I'm not sure how valuable those visitors are, but I
didn't have to do anything very special to get them.
Google Images - http://images.google.com - makes it easy for people to
search for graphics online.

To take advantage of this, when choosing the file name of an image on your
site, use an appropriate key phrase, for example, "book-ends.jpg" if you're
promoting book ends.

Here's a tip I just discovered...
When I searched in Google Images for "book ends" I discovered that the
very first search result was for a page which did NOT contain a graphic of
book ends!

Instead, the page contained a "book ends" LINK to a book ends graphic on
a second page. It if suits the design of your site, you may want to
experiment with this technique.

I'm not sure how much use traffic to images is, but if it's ADDITIONAL traffic
you can get simply by choosing image file names carefully, it's worth having.

Years ago, I visited a site called "forkinthehead.com". Its logo is a man with
a fork in his head. Sounds dreadful, doesn't it?

However, all it took for me to remember that unusual site was ONE visit

You may not wish to go to such extreme lengths, but at least ask yourself:
"Will people remember my domain name?"

At my four main sites, a large percentage of the visitors are people who
have remembered the domain name and typed it directly into their browser.
(I also own a site built in 1996 which has a totally impossible to remember
URL, but that's another story.)

Try to choose a name which won't be confused with similar names. You
don't want people typing your competitor's domain name when they’re trying
to find your site.

NameBoy.com has a handy tool to help you choose domain names. Also,
you can find a surprising number of good deleted (expired) domain names
at Whois.net. Both those tools are free.

Another aspect that is important is page optimization. You need to make sure that your web site’s pages are “bot friendly”. Meaning that your pages should organize and display the information in a manner that the bots used by the major search engines (Google, Yahoo!, MSN, etc.) will recognized your targeted keywords and give more weight to your site based on them.

Here are 15 tips to optimize your pages.

1. Make sure each page have a title tag. Your targeted keywords should be as much as possible at the beginning of the tag. You can leave your web site’s name in the title, but it is recommended that you leave it at the end.
2. Have a meta keywords and descriptions. Although, not as important has other aspects, the description text is often used in the search engine results pages to describe your site. It should be well written and also not too long.

3. Meta keywords should contain your primary keywords as well as common typos and grammatical errors.
4. Use only one H1 tag by page with keywords similar to the title tag.
5. Use sub-titles (H2 and/or H3) before each paragraph or logical section of your page. This helps readability and helps define your content for search engines.
6. Use bullet and numbered lists and bold text to clean up the page’s content and make it easier to read.
7. Use text links as much as possible. Image and Flash links should be avoided when possible.
8. Include a site map with links to each of your web site’s pages.
9. Make sure each page is unique. Don’t duplicate your content!
10. Write content for your visitors, not for the bots! If not, your site might become difficult to read and it could get penalized.
11. Images are never read by the bots. Avoid using images for text and titles. The same goes for Flash.

Over the last year the US, once flying high, has fallen and face planted into a somewhat ugly recession. For people with steady jobs the fear is of course the dreaded pink slip. But as long as they can keep their jobs their paychecks in most cases will remain the same. For small business owners a recession is often felt in the pocketbook. With less people buying their goods and services their revenues and profit margins can start to sink. And it can be painful for a number of reasons. First many business owners have an emotional attachment to their business. When the business starts to flat line its hard to readjust to the new realities of your surroundings. If you are a restaurateur it might be hard to scrap plans for opening a new location across town even if the economic realties of the market make it clear that continuing ahead with previous plans is illogical. The second difficulty is that it's hard to readjust ones life to deal with a lower take home pay. So while a small business might see a 20% drop in revenue that could translate to a 40-50% drop in profits. And while you might have lived on a smaller revenue 10 years ago it's hard to go back to that. Living without regular out of states vacations is one thing going back to that point is even more difficult. And these somewhat harsh realties are what drive people to look for something, anything that can restore their business to its previous health and prosperity.

First I want to point out that in some cases advertising in a recession can be a wise move to increase market share and take advantage of a bad market. But more often what I see is this.

"Our revenues are way down"
"That's horrible"
"Let's spend a ton of money on advertising and hope we can put this behind us"

The problem is that the difficulty for this business is not that they didn't spend enough on advertising last quarter. The problem is that we are in a world wide economic depression caused by billions of crappy loans real estate loans given out over the last few years. And yes everything is interconnected but putting out more ads for a local restaurant is probably not going to change this.

Simply put sometimes business owners make asset allocation decisions based on emotion instead of their current economic realty their business exists in. A few reasons that increased advertising might be a bad idea for your business.

1) The number of potential customers is decreasing
2) In many industries your competitors are increasing advertising to "spend their way out of a recession"
3) Increased advertising and decreased customers is a bad market to ramp up your advertising budget
4) Spending more on advertising can mean advertising in new venues. Often when testing new venues you can wasn't a lot of money discovering mediums that simply don't work for your business.
5) You can increase your expenditures and your cash burn rate. So basically the economy might eventually turn around but your business might not be there to see it.

Ok so if the answer is not doubling or tripling your advertising what is the answer? Here is my advice

1) Cut Expenses that are not needed. Comb through your budgets for extras you added during better times but are not needed.
2) Keep current advertising that is working. Whatever is currently providing you business I would stick with.
3) Cut advertising that is not working.
4) Adjust

Number 4 is probably the most difficult but important. If ones business is affected by the recession (and most are) it might be a good idea to simply accept the possibility of a reduced monthly income for awhile. I am not saying people should give up on their business or not attempt to increase profits. But during a recession it might be a good idea to keep working to achieve higher goals but at the same time when you are doing your monthly personal budget accept the possibility that a weakened economy often results in less customers and lower revenue. This means if you planned on buying a new car or taking an extra vacation it might be a good idea to change those plans.

In the end by operating in a logical manner a business can survive a recession and hopefully be in a position to flourish once the economy recovers.
