Europe's Secret Armies - The Polish Resistance

This is a series of programmes outlining the different resistance groups which developed to resist Hitler's German occupation of the countries of Europe.Unlike many of the other European countries that suffered invasion during World War Two, Poland had the unenviable task of fighting foes on two fronts; the Germans from the West and the Russians from the East. As a direct result, the Polish resistance fashioned itself into one of the most professional and successful underground forces in Europe. From S.O.E. trained "Cichociemni" to the Jewish population in the Warsaw ghettos, the spirit of the Polish people proved indestructible beneath the Nazi jackboot.

Europe's Secret Armies - The Mountain Men Of Crete

Prologue To War

Starting at the end of WWI, the effects of political unrest and economic depression give rise to extremists who take over the governments in Germany, Italy and Japan.

At 7.30am on 1 July 1916, British soldiers mounted an attack on German army positions in northern France: the biggest battle mounted by Britain since Waterloo.

"The Big Push" was meant to break the stalemate of trench warfare on the Western Front, offer relief to the French at Verdun, and get the war moving again. However, the attack plan, a compromise reached by British commander-in-chief Douglas Haig and his army commander Henry Rawlinson, was fatally flawed. As 60,000 British soldiers went "over the top" they were met by a devastating barrage of German machine guns and artillery that should by then have been destroyed by the preliminary British barrage. By the end of the day over 19,240 men were dead, with another 35,493 wounded. A byword for the futility of war, the Somme marked the end of chivalrous notions of combat, and loudly heralded the mechanised slaughter of modern warfare.

Propaganda and the war of words played an undoubtedly vital role in both the successes and failures of World War Two. Governments struggled to gain the upper hand in the war away from the battlefield, but one man proved to have a deft talent for spin. Joseph Goebbels honed the art of mass communication until, in the early days at least, it became one of Germany's most effective weapons.
This DVD features rare examples of propaganda posters and campaigns, and insight from Chris Read and Robin Lenman both of Warwick University into the huge part propaganda had to play within World War Two.

When Hitler ordered the invasion of the Soviet Union, his forces were divided into three separate theaters or groups, each responsible for different objectives. Each operated semi-independently and faced unique within the vast territory of the Russian interior. Primarily based on German combat footage, each episode is a broad portrait of the objectives, campaigns, and eventual fates of these separate commands during the largest and most destructive land campaign ever launched. The objective of Army Group South was to capture the oil fields surrounding the Caucasus Mountains. This oil was critical to the future of the Nazi war effort. Their indecision about whether the primary goal of the campaign should be Moscow or these oil fields effectively hamstrung the German Campaign and led to the eventual Soviet victory. Also covered is the disastrous battle of Stalingrad, perhaps the most vicious of any battle during the war.
