More Big Bonefish on the Key West Flats then I have seen in many years and in places I never saw Bonefish
This could be a result of the Red Tide / Green Slime conditions that are troubling the Lower Florida and upper Keys coasts and we have hundreds of mid summer Baby Tarpon...and larger Tarpon too !
No complaints here but sorry for our northern neighbors and the poor dead and dying fishes.
We need to elect government in Florida that respects our environment and dump the jerks that defunded the State of Florida EPA...

The Light Tackle comes out looking for Barracudas, Jack’s, Sharks with a few Pompano and Sea Trout thrown in for dinner.

The baitfish migrations are sending the cooler water “ Fun Fish” into the inshore Flats and Basins
Near the Lower Florida Keys and Key West.

Spinning tackle casting Swim Baits and Mylar Jigs can be the medicine for Backcountry action.

Warmer days and light winds still give us chances for Bonefish and Permit on the Flats and
maybe even a shot at a few Tarpon that wander into the channels and basins.

Busy and very active June, July Flats Fishing.

Tarpon fishing, Fly and Spin has been exceptional but the big surprise was the Bonefishing this summer and it continues into August.

Certainly early morning and sunset are almost a must for a fair shot at Tarpon but the Bonefish will hold up a little longer possibly causing a late lunch back at thr Marina.

Bonefish have found our Shrinp tipped Spinning Rod Jigs just as interesting as our Flies so no one
Is left out.

Evening Tarpon Fishing, given the right low wind / good tide conditions is a favorite " Key West Sunset " pass time.

Since the end of the first week in May and the New Moon we have had migrating tarpon some
feeding and others doing the love circle dance.

I have had days watching over 300 tarpon crossing the ocean flats this past week, always an amazing
Site.
Best day my old pal Leon Jackson managed to feed 5 tarpon and a bonefish some hook and feather
Brunch....not all stayed on but exciting grabs a few feet from the skiff always cause hair to stand up.

While no tarpon hung around for photo ops, we did get a Hollywood Shot of a nice Bonefish.

April brings Tarpon Inshore Key West

Consistently warmer days and nights have moved more Tarpon into the Key West Backcountry and Flats.
Jumping one or two per trip on fly or Jig the last week along with some Permit shots have kept us interested.
Excited about another Light Tackle / Fly Fishing Tarpon Season....very few things are more important
in this life.
Pie and Puppy's on this list too.....

Tarpon Show and Barracuda Go with Warm Winds

The wind dropped out from 28-35 MPH and we begin to see some improvement in Tarpon and Permit action.
It still was tuff the last week with very slow current/ tide's but on the mend now.

We found a school ....or maybe several schools traveling in the same direction on the Gulf Flats north east of Key West....did I say school.....how about 1000 Jack Creville's from 10-18 lbs.

Pat Wood and I were armed with GoPro a super Flycasting video is in the works with Jacks crashing
our Guggler Fly's and smokin the drag....

Winter is behind us now ( with a few fall backs of course ) .....

Barracudas entertain on Key West Cold Front Flats

We have had a tuff week with wind and cold water driving many inshore species out to the deep and warmer water temperature's.

" Careful what you wish for " Complaining about 84-86 in December brought a January of rainy
days or cold and windy impossible days.

But the last few days Barracudas on fly and very light spinning rods tossing Bass Worms have provided great sport.

Winter arrives in Key West...finally

After record breaking air and water temperatures all Fall and early Winter we have received
a couple cool / cold fronts that made it down from Canada.

The winter fronts are necessary to drive bait fish migrations and bring in the Red Fish, Pompano, Sea Trout, Barracudas and Jack's that make for " Fun Fishing " in the Backcountry and Basins of the Florida Keys.

Tarpon Fishing 4 days in a row Christmas week was fun but without the Cold Fronts and Winter Species the Xmas family's looking for some easy big fish action had a tuff time.

But the Fly Rodders had BIG Tarpon Presents !

August Key West Flats Fishing

August is an interesting month for Key West / Marquesas Flats fishing, anything can happen.

Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit and almost all of this before lunch....a early start is important.

Early evening is another option especially Tarpon fishing and can be super for Fly Fishing Tarpon with the right low wind velocity conditions.

This is the time of year that Flats Guides get together and take turns poling......before lunch.

Quiet in the Marquesas in August....only a few " Child Guides " around this time of year and it a chance to enjoy the peaceful atol.

Well Deserved Tarpon Week For Pat Wood

Last May's Tarpon Flats fishing was ruff at best.....basically a " Wind Event " more than a Tarpon event !

I owed Pat some good Fly Rod Tarpon fishing and last week made up for the beating of May 2014
and then some, just the right combo Tide, Temperture, Tarpon.....we had lots of grabs, jumps , break off's and catches.
Most of the hours we fished were used casting at Tarpon ...Happy boy with a landed 120 lb fish and a lost 120 plus and several other 60 plus fish brought along side.
Great pictures ...lots of laugh's

Pat will be back in May for another try a Migratory Tarpon on the flats of Key West and a sneak outback for a Biter !

Tarpon on Fly But Most Just Lie

Beautiful day today warm with a cooler North Wind.....that was a problem this morning as the barometer drop kept the Tarpon submerged.

We did manage a 60 lb. fish that chomped our Mylar Minnow Fly in a brief feeding period.

A Sink Tip line and light leader helped to take the fly down quickly in 5 ft of backcountry channel.

Other guides reported a lack of high water column, rolling Tarpon also from areas east and west of
the Gulf Flats and the spot we chose to fish.

Tarpon respond to a falling barometer sometimes spoiling our best chances, tomorrow's wind change brings rising barometer and Tarpon.

Permit fishing continues to improve in Key West and Marquesas

Winds now out of the east and a bit more than we would like but not a big deal.
The water temperature continues to come up making it more inviting to Tarpon, Bonefish and Permit.
we are whispering that winter is over.

Tarpon continue to be popping up here and there but thy prefer lighter winds to slide into the areas
a Flats Skiff and Fly Fisherman prefer.
These conditions continue to put us on the Permit Flats daily and make it easier to approach them with the wind chop.

The wind make Marquesas Keys and tuff ride in a Flat Skiff so we have spent our time on the Gulf Flats with plenty of cridders to chase.

Permit Fishing remains stronger than the wind

The Southerly winds are a backup cool front that brings higher humidity and temperatures in the low 80s.
Permit are happy with these conditions and the Tarpon are hovering close by with some in the Backcountry channels and basins.

A crabbing we shall go, hooked to a 1/0 and tied to spinning rods it's hard for Permit to resist a jucy
Florida Green Crab.
Some of the Gulp Baits will work in a pinch or a live shrimp.

Fly Rods will require more skill and lots of luck throwing Crab Pattern Flys and crossing fingers.
