What I have learned is...

After i had discovered blogging, many learnings and outcomes in blogging, which are positive, have helped me in doing this nice hobby, past time activity, time-eater activity or what ever you'll call it: blogging.

Well, as an amateur blogger, learning while having fun makes this hub worth doing. I learned how to make myself more efficient in crafting articles, I also practice timeliness, self-discipline, and many other positive traits which i have derived from blogging.

Blogging is really fun. Isn't it?

My expectation for this Year...

This year, I'll have more time blogging, especially, improving my writing skills which will help me do it more easier. Next, is to research and study more about blogging. As a newbie, this will greatly boost your technical knowledge and skills when you blog. Lastly, read other blogs. This will enhance my reading comprehension and also my writing skills because I'll have the chance to study their writing mannerisms. Hmmm... But this is not a piracy, it's innovation. Smile!!!

Guide Question for Starting up in Blogging

Last topic, we discussed about example in making your blog neat by customizing it. Now, we will have some idealistic question about people starting to blog. This topic is recommended for persons who aspire to be a blogger.

1) Do you have passion or at least interest in writing?
Blogging is of course, associated in writing. That’s why it is sometimes called as online journal. As a blogger, writing is always the rules of the game.

2) What do you know about blogging? When did you discover it?
These questions are simple yet it produces complex answers. As any subject in the world, you must know its history and characteristics if you are interested to this hobby.

3) In case you will put up a blog, what will you have as your niche or a subject when you blog?

Being a blogger, a niche is consider the “soul of a blog” and is therefore, a very critical decision when you are choosing it. Because once you have chosen a niche you can not just change it like clothes. Also, you can not afford to change it.

4) Can you devote a huge part of your time surfing the internet for research and blogging?
Research is a key to be successful in the blogging world. A basic knowledge about blogging is a good investment. Also, you need time to internet to blog and are therefore, needed.

5) Do you have knowledge about HTML?
Blogging does not only mean by writing something, yet it has many learning activities like the basic programming. Once you have at least “the basics” of it, I’ll assure you that an HTML code is as easy as a pie. So, I’ll recommend you to study the basic HTML.

Customizing your Blog

Last post, we discussed tips about effective writing and what positive aspect can a social networking site do to our blog.

For a blog to be successful, your blog layout must capture the first impression of the reader and today, we will discuss the essential parts a blog must have.

Header. This part contains the name of the blog. The header must have your metatags (this will help search engines search some keywords on your blog). The header can be a picture or simply texts. It can also have your tagline.

The MainWrapper. This part is where your posts are located. As you customized your post, this rule must be considered: “It must be readable”. Some blogs that I found when I do my blog hopping that there blog looks good but they sacrifice the readability of there post. Also, you can add tags like “expandable post” scheme to have your blog neat.

Chicklets. Chicklet is a term that is used to describe a small icon or small picture that is usually besides a posting on a blog, an article, or a web page (by chiclets.net). It also contains links to other websites that your blog can be access with. Put all the chicklets in a certain space on your blog to avoid redundancy.

RSS Feeds. In order to have your reader contact with even in there emails, you must have an RSS feed in your blog.

As we all know, there are different kinds of websites in the World Wide Web and one of them is the site termed as “Social Networks”. A social network is a social structure made of individuals (or organizations) called "nodes," which are tied (connected) by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as friendship, kinship, financial exchange, dislike, sexual relationships, or relationships of beliefs, knowledge or prestige. (By wikipedia). As a blogger, in order to popularize and establish a bond between and the readers you must have accounts on this sites. Today, we will tackle points on the advantages on having accounts on a social networking site:

Social networking site, does not only establish friendship to others but a mere promotion for you site. See, two birds hit in one stone! While, you socialize to the world, like sending message to them, online chats, forums (discussion and debates), you also promote your blog to them. (Simply by attaching your link of course.)

The spread of words are powerful! The best referral you can ever have. Here’s how: you promote your blog to your friend and when your friends are satisfied with your blog, your friend will also refer your blog to his/her other friends and the process will continue… But at the end of the process, your blog will greatly benefit.

But how can we do it?

The best way is to communicate with your friends. Chat with them; send his/her a message about your blog in the honest way (not a spam!) or by attaching your blog link to your signature (in the case of forums, discussions or debates).

Another alternative is setting up a fan site and/or group. In this way, your readers will be connected in any changes or announcement regarding about your blog. Fan sites and groups provide a free discussion boards and in that way you will know what the reader’s sentiments and suggestions about the improvement of your blog.

The good characteristics of written messages (like a blog) are definitely results the adherence to the principles, rules of action or conduct, general truths and guidelines in writing. Today, we will some up the different tips on effective writing.

Characteristics on Effective Posts

Correctness. No error, fault, mistake or departure from truth. A person may have a tendency to find errors. These mistakes if ever committed definitely manifest organizational inefficiently. So, in order to avoid errors which may be inadvertently done in spelling, punctuation, price, specification, sentence structure and grammar among others, the post should be thoroughly edited.

Conciseness. Brief, short or limited in words. We should consider the people are always busy. They therefore have no ample time to read wordy letters that would only tarry their work. In fact they only spot the essential information in the post. However, concision does not mean deleting the words that count and makes your statements brusque. Brevity means using the necessary words only as you retain the natural tone of your sentences.

Completeness. This means perfectness, fullness or sufficiency of the post as regards information and parts. You should check the paragraphs if it carries all the necessary messages intended to be transmitted. This prevents possible clarificatory comments that may interrupt the transmission of what you want to say.

Courtesy. This is akin to acts or expressions that manifest politeness, civility, affability, urbanity, considerateness and respectfulness. It is a business tenet that a blogger should please everybody. Expressions like please, kindly, thank you so much, we are glad, we appreciate, in both oral and written communication promote good will.

Visual appeal. The worth of a post may exceed even the value of the most expensive merchandise. It possibly creates a lasting impression like that links unceasing relationships. Hence, a post should not be attractive, has a visual impact and generally good looking but not multicolored.

We should avoid crafting dull posts by using full uppercase letters or full lowercase letters all throughout the article. Vividness may be instituted in a letter through boldface in titles, names and in significant information for purposes also of emphasis. We should always remember that post with vigor; vividness and memorability make an article important to reader.

Tonal appeal. Statement may exude tense, hostility, artificially, friendliness, naturality or sincerity of the communicator. In several communication situations, there are no substitutes for simplicity, straight forward, modern and readers’ words and phrases. Hence, we should organize a post sounding like we are talking personally to our readers.

Why Blogs Fail?

This question applies for the beginners in this craft. (But I know some blog – popular blog that had failed). But the same in all questions, it has answer and solution that I will share to you.

False beliefs: Some bloggers* believe that blogging earn instant money. Some bloggers make blog because they think that they could earn money instantly. Then, bloggers will apply to an ads serving site for the satisfaction of that purpose. When the site refuses the application, then they get frustrated and losses the appetite to write. Consequently, the blog dies. This mentality should not be in first priority. Instead, concentrate first on the contents and readers.

Bloggers need positive reinforcement. Bloggers are like artist who can boost their performance when they feel that it’s worthy but when the opposite happens, they loss the inspiration to go further (e.g. no traffic, no movements on the site like comments, followers etc.) This is the actual problem of bloggers because there work are not appreciated. Solution is simple: apply to a blog promoting site!

Lack of definite goal. Bloggers find this a crucial point when they blog because they don’t know what is there purpose. This will lead to misdirection and the incapacity to continue blogging. (I, my purpose am to serve you, readers, knowledge I know about blogging by sharing it through blogging.)

Bloggers need the essence of frequency when we blog. Frequency in blogging speaks on the regularity or the rate we post articles in our blog. Some Bloggers shares the same frequency and some do not. Everything you post on the blog, every piece of original material is achieved and easily accessible when you need it; many would-be writers actually take blogging very seriously since they are offered the opportunity of getting things into print without the intermediary of another publication. Today, we will discuss the importance of frequency in blogging.

Blogging is trendy (and that’s the truth). Not only is it popular with people of all ages but it also makes one feel like blending in. You get an idea of what people appreciate in your writing, you get to comment and actually live some events of public interest, and you have the chance to speak up your mind. In that same reason why we apply frequency or how many times we post an article in a week or month. Bloggers, in many aspect, post for there blog in order to grow.

In search engines perspective, SE’s needs fresh ideas to be search by your potential readers and that’s why blog is here. SE’s are not contented with mere static page and static contents. Even a forum works because the ideas are fresh and at the same time, queries of some reader’s point on the same question the forum has/have.

Like an act (e.g. in circus, performances etc.), it must have new things to present to please the audience. Same situation applies when we blog in order to satisfy the readers.

Frequency determines the how you love blogging.* Why? It is because if you love your blog, you want the best you can ever give like having new outputs and the same time an updated layout of your blog. For a blog, with one post a month, do you love your blog?

Traits a Blogger must Possess

As any profession or a hobby, there are some characteristic a person must or should possess. Today, we will enumerate some of the many good traits a blogger must have.

First, you should have a passion for writing. You are not necessary to be good in writing but the interest itself in writing will do. As any stuff, it may be corrected and practiced to achieve mastery. You may attend workshops about writing to improve your skill or just the simple absorption on the teacher’s lessons about writing is enough investment to blog.

Exercise a time management efficiently. Even, this hobby requires this trait. Blogging needs time to grow. In order to achieve this, you must be time-disciplined. Plan scheduled activities for the day and I’ll assure you, your blog will work.

A blogger must be open-minded. You should develop this positive attitude in order to survive. No one can please everybody and therefore criticism is constant. However, if you are open-minded, treatment for this problem will be considered as a factor for improvement and not factor for losing.

Bloggers must always strive for a healthy post. For a blogger to succeed, this must take into consideration. By observing proper capitalization, grammar, minimum-to-maximum word count and of course, an informational post are the essential requisites of a healthy post.

A blogger should have a sense of humor. The tone of blogging depends to the blogger. In order for you to avoid a lecture-based post, you may have it as a good ice-breaker for the reader because they learn in the humorous way.

Having a Search Box on Your Blog

On our previous article, we enumerated the weaknesses of bloggers when he writes. Now, we will discuss the pros and cons of having a search box on our blog. (F.Y.I.) A search box is a kind of textbox intended for search purposes. This point/s will help you choose when to use or not a search box.

Pros:

It makes your blog flexible for research purposes. While the reader is roaming around on your blog, visitors have other things to be searched on the internet (of course, aside from reading your blog). Search box makes your blog reader-friendly.

It also invites readers to have more time on your blog site. While the readers accommodate the access of a mini search engine, at the same time, blog visit makes longer.

Cons:

Search box occupies a small but important space on your blog. A search box must be place either in the upper-right, upper-left or even at the top of your blog posts to be effective. However, that space is vital part of the blog. (Well, that space is intended for a “greener pasteur”. =)

Aside form this, bloggers find a search box would be redundant on there blog. They think that it’s just a waste of space in there blog and there are many things to put before it.

Weaknesses in Writing

On our previous article, we talked about the elements of blogging. Many of us practice the wrong way of writing because we thought it is correct. Now, we will discuss the technicalities of writing.

Avoid wordy writing. Wordy writing makes your pots running on the bush. Pin point what you want to emphasize. Example: “A boy, who walks down the street waiting for his mother to fetch him making crazy moves after another, suddenly bumped by car.” Isn’t that annoying? This sentence maybe put it this way: “A boy suddenly bumped by a car.” And that’s it; you delivered what you want to say. A simple S-V-O (Subject-Verb-Object) pattern of a sentence can do it better.

Have a strict number of words and paragraph. 200-250 words must be the minimum words for an article. Also, 2-3 paragraphs would be nice and simple for a healthy post.

Make your post clear to anyone reading your blog. A post must be easy to understand by any person. Are you familiar with the word Gobbledygook? It is an English term used to describe nonsensical language or the unnecessary use of long words and stuffy style in communications that complicates the message makes it less understandable to the reader.

Here are some gobbledygooks and their meanings:

Aerodynamics personnel decelerators – parachutes
Interlocking slide fasteners – zippers
Wood interdental stimulators – toothpicks

If possible, words like this must be translated in layman’s term.

Why do some create blogs and why do others read them? This is actually a ten points question since its answer covers the very working principle behind the entire trend. First of all, we are not far from the truth when saying that bloggers are very much like journalists, and that the material we find on blogs is very often much more interesting than that in the media thanks to the personal touch writers include in their articles. Furthermore we cannot ignore the interactive dimension of blogs, which is probably the greatest advantage in itself: comment boxes for instant responses, links to documented materials, turn the blog into a magic puzzle. Search Engine Optimization from these three words implies is the process of having traffic to your blog from the search engines (e.g. Yahoo!, MSN, Google and etc.). Of course if your having traffic coming from search engines that becomes a huge factor in the development of your blog’s popularity (Imagine millions of people or maybe a potential visitor use search engines in there everyday internet research and also, bloggers. Man, that’s huge!). The following points I will share to you is some of the many tips on how to improve SEO on your blog. Here it is:

First, concentrate first on your blog. Search engines will not index your blog if the contents are not healthy or maybe the blog is popular or a baby blog. A decent blog is the priority to be made and exercise before anything else.

Keywords. Search engines like this stuff. Every people using S.E.’s are dealing with the possible keywords for there search. For example, you want to look for a blog with a niche about health, you may type the keyword/s “health blogs or blogs about health”. Think about a catchy word or a phrase that has a big potential to be type by a prospective visitor on the search engine. But don’t get disappointed if you don’t see your blog listed on the searched keyword because this point will apply if you’re already “indexed” by S.E.’s.

Applying in a blogger-networking site. Elements of blogging # 2: Niche

Niche could be a hobby, interests, and also career (e.g. being a teacher, lawyer or an accountant. We blog because we want to share something we learned from our day-to-day experience and in exchange to this deed, inspired when granted or rewarded with good words. Remember these questions before setting up your blog:

Is the niche interest you? How can you write if the subject you choose doesn’t interest you? (There are some who answers negative about this question.)

Is the niche too general? Or too specific? A niche must be in moderate subject. Example a subject computer is a general one and in contrast, motherboard in a computer is specific. The niche must or should be computer hardware. If you choose computer as your niche, you will be misplaced in the broad topics a computer have or if you choose motherboard as a subject might be specific that you will be redundant everytime you post about it. Also as a blogger, you will not grow if the same dealings of post in every blogposts you do.

Is the niche you choose is catchy or appealing for the readers? Having an attention-grabbing subject is a plus factor in terms of reading volume. If the subject you chose is somewhat “boring” then you will have a hard time convincing the readers that your niche is an enjoyable one (except if you’re a good writer).

Most of the readers are attracted to pictures when they read.*

Pictures help visualize in the reader’s mind what you want to emphasize.

Some readers are bored when plain texts are being read. (Count me in!)

Even people who are not fond of reading blogs are fascinated just because of pictures. Persons like this are reinforced by the positive reinforcement which is pictures. (Thanks to my psychology class I’d learned about the reinforcement behavior.)

Also, bloggers (like me) are not contented with a static page.

Elements of Blogging #1: Reader

There are 3 basic elements a blog must possess (according to what I research about). These are reader, niche and SEO but let’s forget the other two. We will concentrate our mind on the reader aspect. Reader is an essential element in a blog. Why? Because who will read your article if no one reads your post? In short, reader reads your post not the miner, hunter or any –er in the world. That simple reason is a must for without them your blog would be useless. Today, we will have tips about attracting reader in your site.

Your blog must be reader-friendly. Appearance of your blog is the reader’s first remark. Make the design simple yet attractive. In the case of a very stunning layout, it is not advisable. Why? The reader’s eyes will only focus on it and not in your posts. It would become disadvantageous to your articles and your blog as a whole. The design will over place the posts.

Be informative. Readers read because of the following reasons: (1) Reading for Literary Experience (reading for enjoyment), (2) Reading to Gain Information (Reading to be informed) (3) Reading to Perform a Task (reading to accomplish a specific job). As a blogger, you must cater the reader’s need of information, enjoyment, and help them achieve the job. Write a healthy post.

Be natural. Write as if you’re only conversing what you want to say. Express yourself freely.

Avoid overusing the punctuation marks. Too much of this will bore and annoy the reader. Like the use of ellipsis (…) exaggeratedly will not be good for your blog.

Blog and be Blogged: Rules on Getting Back Links and Decent Traffic

Are you insane of the bouncing rate on your site? Then this rules will make your insanity fade away. Here it is:

Rule # 1: Protect your blog at all times. Familiar isn’t it? (I am also a boxing fanatic) this means that you should be careful in accepting links you might/will support. Consider the blog reputation and niche relationship before posting links in your site. Bad reputation of blogs or site you supported will greatly affect the reputation of your blog as well. Don’t let other’s bad side affect yours.

Rule # 2: Be friendly. Establish good will to your fellow blogger. Move out of your way and be known on the blogosphere! Being friendly has many advantages: (1) your colleague blogger may post your link without any effort maid. (2) aside having him as your friend, your friend may recommend you to his/her other friends then you will have a lot of back links on your site.

Rule # 3: Avoid Linking Scheme or Link Exchange. That method will not ensure the traffic on your site. Imagine if all of you (for example a hundred bloggers) manage and agreed to have exchanged links therefore each of you has a hundred links also. Then imagine the inconvenience for the readers, if they have enough patience to scan your blog with hundred of choices so be it. But can it have assurance?

Rule # 4: Comment decently. This is the best way to have back links on your site. Comments on other blogs then post your link in it. (But be sure that it’s not exaggerated)

Rule # 5: Follow the Rules. This rule is applicable in all the laws and the rules in the world. The rules above are useless if you will not follow it. Be in standards.

First of all, this name should be “Two heads are better than one” but since the name is taken so, decided to omitted the “a & e” in the word “are”. That’s the history of the name.

A BIG NO. Maybe that's my mistake in choosing the name but i don't regret it as my choice. This name is my favorite quotation. The number “two” have many significant events and values in my life but I don’t want to talk it further. (Very personal) I just want to share it you my fave quote. Maybe this is my mistake in choosing this name because it has nothing to do with the niche. I want to be renowned with my own name.

Research. This phase is considered as a foundation when you set up your blog. Identifying (well, brainstorming) the background of your niche is highly an advantage considering that you understand what is your niche is all about. Also, the niche you selected should be your favorite hobby or whatever as long as you are inspired in sharing them to the reader.

Resources. Blogging does not only depend on the platform your blog engage in. Your blogging skill can boost when you have other computer application that can help when you. See my My Blogging Weapons Part I and Part II for more details.

Register. From the word implies, join networks that can improve traffic in your blog. Especially sites that offer blog promotion, I recommend Blogcatalog and MyBloglog. (this sites really enhance traffic in my blog). technorati is also advantageous but I had a problem claiming my blog. :0 But you can try it; maybe it’s me who had a problem.

Review then Revise. Before you post your article, you’re sure that: grammar has been checked; no broken links; and no faulty HTML codes. If this thing/s is found on your article then this is the time you revise it.

Read other Blogs. Read blog that can aid in improving your blog (tips in blogging, etc.) and other blog related to your niche.

Readers. The most essential element (aside from your niche and seo) for without them your post will be useless. Post articles like you’re only talking to them. Make your post reader-friendly. And always consider the satisfaction of the readers.

Remember. The R’s above is useless without the proper digestion of the mind on these facts. Wahaha!

Google Adsense Finally Noticed Me

Yes. After a month, (but actually two weeks of that time is a research phase) Google Adsense accepted my application. Then so what’s my point?

Aside from I can earn a number of dollars, I can also promote ads that need attention and most of all: quality traffic on their site.

Promoting something is like helping out the needy and especially when you’re rewarded with what you’ve done.

Bloggers write article in order for the reader’s to read his work. But how can a blogger improve his/her post if nobody reacts? Today, I will elaborate the importance of your comment to us, bloggers.This will be shown only in post's page

First and foremost, comments, helps in the development of an article. Comments serves as a guide for a blogger to improve the next article the he will write in the near future.

Positive comments reinforce but negative comments reinforces twice. Agree? Satisfaction of the reader is a primary factor that must be by a blogger when he writes. We strive hard when we know that it will have a good outcome but, we strive harder when we receive a negative ones (I, myself can’t sleep with that problem). In addition to that, intense brainstorming is the next phase that we do on how we can get positive output. Another is, we write frequently when we think it will give a fine result.

Bloggers are concerned of how an article progress. For me, article can be called “decent” when it has a P.S.O. (positive over negative comment equals positive rate outcome). But don’t be confused if you search this term to the net without an exact result. (Founded word!)

A comment determines your career in blogging. Blogging is no joke. If your articles always acquire negative result, then stop blogging* or maybe start researching again about this niche.

The 50 years of living in this world was indeed very short. Michael Jackson died last June 25, 2009 due to a cardiac arrest. Despite that I am not an avid fan of Jackson, showing sympathy to a Legend on his field is worth a post.

Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American recording artist, entertainer and businessman. The seventh child of the Jackson family, he made his début to the professional music scene at the age of 11 as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1969, and began a solo career in 1971 while still a member of the group. Jackson was referred to as the "King of Pop" in subsequent years; his 1982 album Thriller is the world's best-selling record of all time and four other solo studio albums are also among the world's best-selling records: Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991) and HIStory (1995). Although many controversies he battled, he continued being a nice person to the Philippines when he paid a visit here. He showed compassion to the Pinoy fans especially the Filipino kids who really admired him. Actually, he visited a hospital somewhere in Manila and visited the newly born babies. He also served as an inspiration on the prisoner in Cebu when they perform an algorithm dance (mass demonstration) in the tune of his famous song “Thriller” and acquired a great number of hits in Youtube. He is also an animal lover. In fact, he has animals in his mansion and a chimpanzee sleeping with him. I hope you’ll remember him about the good things he had shown and shared to us.

My Blogging Weapons (Part Two: Concentration on Computer Application and Websites)

As I had a positive response about this topic, I will give the favor to you. Today, additional “weapons on blogging” will be told about blogging. From the simple to complex application and from the websites that offers innovative blogging. Here it is;

Feedburner.com. This website primarily features RSS (Really Simple Syndication) Feeds. This feeds serves as an update with the blog you support and follow.

Sitemeter.com and Google Analytics. This two helps counting your site traffic and webpage view. Sitemeter offers a variation of menus on how the traffic is being made, and who’s on your site at this very moment.

Google Analytics. Offers a scientific method of reporting traffic counts. They use graphs, world maps (of data count per country) and many other features. It also offers percentage rate of the visitor’s loyalty on your site and also the bouncing rate.

The two also count the number of page views the reader acquired and is being updated regularly.

Notepad and Macromedia Dreamweaver. When I usually had an HTML Problem, (because sometimes I forget the codes) dreamweaver usually takes over.
Dreamweaver is a web developer tool that makes HTML, CSS, PHP and many other frameworks becomes sweatless. It is like an archived of codes that when you type any code it generates possible codes that you want. You can edit your tags either by codes, design or both.

The notepad is my fast testing application (because dreamweaver loads much slower than notepad) where I can test my experimental code at a speed of light (hahaha). Aside from that, traditional tools matters to me so I can’t work without the combo of the two.

Paint and Photoshop. In-charge of my graphic problems. With my basic knowledge with these two apps, I can manipulate picture at any moment.
