It's Not The Number Of Winners That Make You Money

Do you know anyone who regularly wins money betting on racehorses? I know of quite a few myself and even though they do win not all of them make a profit. There is a world of difference between how often you win and making a profit on your betting.

Take Eric Sergeant for example. He hits an average 61% winners and sometimes collects money several times a week from his local Labrooke betting shop. Trouble is most of his winners are odds on and never more than 15/8. His average odds are just a fraction above 1/2. Overall the bookie pays him less than 65% the total Eric hands over in stake money. That's a whopping great loss of 35%+.

Eric's bets prove my maxim, "it's not the number of winners that make you money, it's the odds of the winners!" Get the prices right and your profits are guaranteed.

One guy that has struck a good balance is John Smith. His method of betting in handicap races gives him a winning strike rate of 21%; or 21 winners in every 100 bets. Not a brilliant achievement and he is the first to admit that. But he is not bothered by the low percentage of winners, no sir. Why? Simple, he makes a tidy profit on his bets.

John's winning bets average 5/1 and that gives him a return of 126 point for every 100 points staked; a clear profit of 26 points. That my friend is a 26% return on your money, where else can you get such a return? If you know, point me in the right direction.

Okay this is all well and good, but how does it help you to make money from your betting? Well, it gets you in touch with reality by pointing you in the right direction. You know, you don't need 70 or 80 winners in every hundred bets to make a profit on your outlay. You just have to get the odds right to make money from playing the horses.

Now you know the secret to making your betting pay, you just have to put it into practice. Maybe you are already half way there and don't realise it. It could be your current selection system or method, that is losing you money, can be turned around and pay for itself.

Have you considered the way you use your selections process. Do you follow good money management and get the most from all your bets? You need to set up a betting bank and determine how you will utilise that money to best advantage. Namely the staking plan you will employ.

Then you need to analyse your selections, what are the average odds, how much are you losing? With this information you could go from adding to the bookies bank balance to filling your own. The first step is to know how many points you are losing, then to work out what odds your winners need to be to turn a profit.

For example, you could have a system that gives you 300 bets a year and returns 270 points; losing you 30 points. To make this system profitable you will need to increase those returns by at least 31 points. You can do this without picking any more winners and without chasing your losses. (If you are not already doing the one thing I am about to suggest).

Increasing your winnings without risking any more money you just have to get better odds about your winners. Simple, if you have the time and are prepared to put in the work. That's right, you have to put in the work to make your money. It is not just going to drop in your lap, though I for one wish it would; being a lazy git.

Getting better odds is simple, just check out all the bookies and betting exchanges. There is often a point or two extra to be had on most horses at some point while the markets are open. Just keep a sharp eye on them. The down side to this is the need to have accounts with them all. Not very practical if you don't have a fortune to bet with.

You can of course open accounts with two or three bookies and maybe Betfair and Betdax. That will suffice. The betting exchanges are a must as the odds are often much higher than the bookmakers. The plus side of the exchanges is being able to ask for the price you want, (be realistic). You can place your bets and go about your day. If your odds and stake are matched your bet is on, otherwise it is cancelled and you keep your stake.

The downside of asking for a price is your bet is not always going to be matched and you can miss winners. That may be an issue with you, but look at it this way. Betting at odds lower than you need to make a profit overall, is tantamount to accepting poor value. Therefore unmatched bets mean you do not bet at poor value odds, this in itself is a bonus as getting value is the only sure-fire way to long term profit.

To take advantage of asking for a price you need to know the odds you want. This will be worked out from knowing your selections, the average starting price, number of winners and how much profit you are realistically prepared to accept.

Say you have a system that gives you 300 bets a year and gives you 60 winners at average odds of 7/2, (4.5). You want to make money and are will be happy with a 10% profit. What odds do you need about your winners?

Well, you are looking for a return of 330 points, 300 plus 10%. At the current odds of 7/2 you will lose 30 points, so you need to get a better return than this. (Okay, you knew that). You actually need odds of 9/2 to get your return 330 points and make 30 points profit. This is worked out by adding 10% to your outlay, 300 points plus 30 equals 330 points. Then you divide this by the number of winners you expect, (that will be 60 then; 330/60 equals 5.5 or 9/2..

As you can see you only need to get one point more for your winners to make the system pay. Easy to achieve if you put in the time and effort. Of course you can only estimate the number of bets, winners and the odds you will get. But it is an educated guess based on your usual betting practices be it following systems, methods or tips. You will also have to factor in the Betfair percentage if you use their exchange. Alternatively you can absorb the cost.

Exclude all handicap races. The odds really are stacked against you in these events, there are just too many variables and the form is difficult to analyse.
Concetrate on Class 1 to Class 5 races only. Once you get past class 5 races you are faced with the poorest of horses and might just as well stick a pin in the list of runners. Save yourself a lot of time and trouble by ignoring these races.
Maiden races. Mostly untried horses yet to prove they can win a race. You really are picking blind in these racess, there is little to go on to make a sound judgement. Don't bother with them!
National Hunt Flat races. Just forget about them, its best in the long run and you will avoid many losers.
Selling, Auction and Claiming races. Okay, this is obvious, these are not races to get involved with. Low grade events with horses past their best or never been that successful in th efirst place. Avoid them at all costs.
Races with a clear first and second favourite. These are the best events to concentrate on. You will not pick a horse in all such races, but they give you the best chance of picking the winner. You need to pick from these two horses
Qualifying the race. Obviously there has to be a clear first and second favourite. This can be from the betting forecast of the Racing Post website or newspaper, Sportinglife.com website forecast, a betting exchange such as Betfair.com, your favourite newspapers forecast or the actual betting forecast. The choice, as they say is yours. Just make sure both the horses have won at least one race in their careers and the race is qualified.

Making your selection, from the clear first and second favourite, is pretty much up to you. There are no hard and fast rules here. But you will find the winner is amongst these two horses around 50% of the time, over the long haul.

How about the other breed of punter, you know the one, he has an opinion about everything to do with racing. He 'knows it all' and dispenses his advice to you whether you want it or not. Most of these 'sage' punters are found haunting the racing forums rubbishing every opinion but their own and telling you how brilliantly they are doing. Then a few weeks or months later they are asking you to share the latest £37 system with them. Surely they can afford it from all their winnings?

I know this because I have been following Jack for a while now and I have seen his betting statements from various bookmakers and two betting exchanges. Jack is genuine and he makes no false statements or promises. He does not need to, he is not selling you anything, (though I might).

Before listing 'Jacks Tips' just let me tell you this. The tips are not a system, they are about capitalising on a few important factors, the type that help you get rid of the horses with little or no chance of winning. You are then left with just a few horses to choose from in any race; the real triers. It is from these that you will choose which to bet on, if any.

As Jack said, "the tips are not a system." It's a way of reducing the numbers in a race with you making the final choice. So not everyone using this approach will back the same horses. Yes it does need you to do some work, to apply any other information or tips you have to the process. Guess you can call this a method. Use it and get winners galore. Okay on with the tips.

Jacks First Tip - Stick to British Flat racing, you have to specialise and this is the best area to focus on.
Jacks Second Tip - Concentrate on horses that are allocated from 9 stone 2 pounds to 9 stone 13 pounds.
Jacks Third Tip - Exclude any horse that had less than two races to date.
Jacks Fourth Tip - Horses racing within a furlong of its last race do best.
Jacks Fifth Tip - Scratch horses returned at a starting price in excess of 6/1 last time they raced.
Jacks Sixth Tip - Concentrate on horses won by less than 5 lengths or were beaten by less than 10 lengths in their last race.
Jacks Seventh Tip - Ignore races restricted to two-year olds.

By sticking to these tips you will be able to eliminate most runners in any race. Some races will be eliminated altogether, those restricted to two-year olds, races where all the runners are on their debut or had less than two career starts and those where all runners are allocated less than 9 stone 2 pound. I would suggest you also ignore races where you are left with more than three or four horses to choose from.

You can apply Jacks tips to any amount of qualifying races you want, but you might like to consider limiting the numbers a bit - there can easily be eight or more bets some days. That can become unmanageable stake wise, unless you have tens of thousands of pounds to bet with.

Well, we certainly have started Handicap Surprises on a lean period. Maybe the sole system pick for today will surprise us all and win...

Talking of the system pick, it is Dark Mischief in the 2:15 race at Salisbury racecourse. As the hot favourite for the race, the win will not cover the losses of the past few days, but will go towards recovering them. Its a start at least.

You might do well to watch the betting exchanges and online bookies for better odds than the current 11-4 generally on offer. I shall be looking for at least 7-2 and am prepared to go in running to get it, if necessary.

Welcome to the first of my money winning horse racing methods. This is one of my portfolio of 7 used to make a living from betting on race horses.

A portfolio is necessary to spread the risk, not all of them win all the time. When some lose the winners cover the losses. You cannot be right all the time, you don't need to be. When you get a 'balance' you will be successful overall, it is the only way to go - with a protfolio...oh no, I'm talking in rhyme. That's not good!

Did you know it only takes around 30% winners to make money betting on racehorses?

Of course you need to get the right odds about your bets to make a profit. With 30 winners in every hundred, at odds of just 5/2 you will make 5% profit; that is a return of 105 points against your outlay of 100 points.

Okay it is not a fortune and you certainly will not get rich from such returns. But, look at it another way. If you start off with, say £100 and make 5% profit on your first 100 bets, then you reinvest that £105 on your next 100 bets.

You now make 5% profit on your £105, turning it into £110.25. You repeat this three more times, turning your stake into £115.76, £121.55 and finally £127.76. You have now made 27.76% profit on your original £100.

Okay, you are still not impressed, after all its only £27.76 and that's not even a night out at the pub. True, but how little interest do you accept on your savings? No where close to 27% I suspect. Get my point?

Let's be absolutely clear here! I am not suggesting you use your savings to bet with. Far from it. I am positively preaching at you NOT to use even one penny of your savings to bet with. That would be plain stupid.

The point I am making is this. To win money betting on race horses you need to realise how little it takes to be a winner. You do not need 100% winners, not even close. Heck you should not be focusing on how many winners you get.

Your concerns should be on the returns you get from your bets. When returns are bigger than your bets you make money, it's that simple. Focus on the fact that you need to get the correct odds about your bets and you will win money.

Professional and non professional gamblers make money by winning enough times at the correct odds to make a profit. You must copy them if you are to make money from your betting exploits.

Let me tell you how I approach the 'winners' thing. My only concern about how many winners I get is in determining the odds I need to make an overall profit evry year.

My 'Handicap Specials' average out at 25 winners in every 100 bets. That's a one in four strike rate, so I look for odds of at least 4-1 on all my bets. Any horse I cannot get these odds for is not going to be carrying any of my money. Horses on offer at bigger odds are deemed to be 'value' bets.

Of course I do not get a winner in every four bets; if only. On the downside there are a lot of long losing runs to contend with. They are a fact and need to be factored into your betting.

True professional gamblers organise their betting money like a they were running a business. The losing runs are factored in to their betting and are not a problem, they know they will come out ahead in the long term.

Do you know what else successful professional gamblers do? Let me enlighten you. They do not expect to win a fortune or get seriously rich from gambling. They are just looking for a decent return on their risk money.

You to can make money if you look at gambling from the professionals' view point. Here is my approach to beting on the horses.

1. I will make a decent return on my betting money
2. I will get more losers than winners
3. The odds of the winners will win me more money that I bet
4. It will be hard work finding the right bets and getting the odds needed to make money

Hot Pick RSA Chase Cheltenham Festival

Got a real hot pick for a horse racing at the Cheltenham Festival today, I only hope it does better than the nag that lost me £700 yesterday.

My money is already on Cooldine in the RSA Chase at 2:40 this afternoon. I got odds of 4-1 and 7-2 for a total stake of £650, so a nice profit to be had, even after doing £700 on this first day of the festival.

Cooldine is a profitable horse to follow, having won eight of it's 15 races and shown a profit of 3.84 points to level stake win bets.

It is reasuring to see Ruby Walsh is in the saddle today as he has ridden Cooldine to six of his eight wins. In fact Ruby has only ridden the horse eight times making that a 75% winning partnership.

So it is a big bet for me at least, on Cooldine in the third race at Cheltenham today.

Cheltenham Festival 2009

The Cheltenham Festival is upon us once again and the opening day features the SMURFIT KAPPA CHAMPION HURDLE CHALLENGE TROPHY a GRADE 1, (CLASS 1) race for 4 year olds and above.

This has been a profitable race for me with five winners from the past eight years. Sadly I missed out on Hors La Loi III at 10-1, Hardy Eustace at 33-1 in 2004 though I did back him the following year at less generous odds. The third horse to cost me money was in 2007 when Sublimity romped home at 16-1, making some punters very happy but leaving me out of pocket to the tune of £600.

The Champion Hurdle is the only race I look at on the first day of the Cheltenham campaign and my early thoughts are that the real value is in Celestial Halo at around the 10-1 mark. The hot favourite for the race, Binocular, is not all he is cracked up to be, is a little over hyped and extremely poor value.

CELESTIAL HALO - Won Triumph Hurdle at last years festival - Has a career 3 wins and 3 seconds from only 6 hurdles races - horse is of suitable age, experience and ability to win this race - a bonus is jockey and trainer are in form - at around 10-1 the horse is definitely value for money.

BRAVE INCA - Knocking on a bit for this race but cannot be ignored with two previous festival wins, including the Champion Hurdle. Placed in 27 of 33 hurdle races including 15 wins, with 2 of those wins and 2 places from 4 Cheltenham races in his career. Brave Inca is in form and has won at least once in past five seasons, including the current one. The Jockey is in form but the trainer has had no wins in past 14 days from 3 runners, not a major concern as he had a winner with only other runner prior to this period. This light campaign that could see festival glory with a good each-way bet at around 33-1.

EBAZIYAN - Could make up for a poor performance in last years race when 12th of 15 runners. Four of his 6 career wins have been over hurdles and he is in cracking form this season with a emphatic 8 length win at Leopardstown on first of March, when he justified favourtism. Currently at 66-1 this horse has to be worth an each-way interest.

This concludes my early assessment of the race and my bet will be on one of the three horses mentioned above. Which horse will carry the burden of my money will be determined tomorrow after I have checked out the going, non-runners and several other factors not available today.

At the moment it is likely I shall lump my £700 on Celestial Halo, but check back here tomorrow for my final assessment of the race and the name of the horse I will pick to win on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival 2009.

Horse Racing Form Storm

Well yesterday saw 'Form Storm' get off to a flying 'flop' without a single winner in the five races selected.

Fourtunately I only bet one of the horses, sadly it finished second. Not bad but when you bet the horse to win that's what it needs to do, otherwise it might as well finish last.

Anyway there is a short list of four horse races to consider today, three at the Wincanton meeting and one at Ayr. This is subject to there being only two or three qualifiers to pick from and getting the odds wanted from the betting exchanges or bookmakers.

This is my list of races and the horses I am considering today. The races are given in timed sequence and the horses in each race are in my personal order of preference. You may have other ideas on this and that is good as this is a method and open to interpretation.

Okay, the first race I am looking at is the two o'clock at Wincanton, where there is three possibilites. Bright Quest, Blazing Diva and Duly Noted. At the moment I will probably bet Bright Quest as the odds are unbelievable at 40-1.

As for my second bet, Triggernometry at 7-2 is looking a half decent bet. But I will keep my options open for the 5-1 I think it is really worth.

William Hill is going a whopping 20-1 about Kid'Z'play in Ayr's 4:40 race and it's a price worth taking.

Betting for the day will be wound up with the 4:55 at Wincanton, where it's a toss up between Amir El Jabal and Wasntme. I think the latter of the two has the winning factor and is almost at my target odds of 5-2, but the favourite is poor value with current best odds of only 6-4. Which is why it is so important to check the best odds available from bookies and betting exchanges.
