Modern Warfare 2's Keith David talks voice acting

Q&A: Veteran actor discusses working on 2009's most anticipated title, his roles in Halo 3, Mass Effect 2, and the voice-acting process in games.

It's not every day that one of the most mellifluous voices of all time leaves you a voicemail. But that's just what happened when, due to a scheduling mix-up and an ill-timed bathroom break, I found this message waiting on my phone.

Keith David, in the flesh.

"Hey Tor, this is Keith David. Sorry I missed you. You can get me back at [NUMBER REDACTED]. Thanks so much. Bye-bye."

Armed with David's cell phone number, this reporter got the opportunity to talk with the veteran character actor. Besides an expansive voice-over career that includes his Emmy-winning narration of the PBS series The War, he has worked on around 150 films, television shows, and games. David's big-screen resume ranges from There's Something About Mary to director John Carpenter's 1988 cult sci-fi classic They Live. On television, he was cast in two popular 1990s animated series: Gargoyles and Todd McFarlane's Spawn, where he voiced the titular demon superhero.

However, to gamers, David will be best remembered for voicing the rogue Sangheili known as the Arbiter in Halo 2 and Halo 3. David also lent his distinctive baritone to the role of Captain Anderson in Mass Effect and to gang boss Julius in Saints Row and its sequel. He has also voiced roles in the game version of Coraline, Transformers: The Game, and Lords of EverQuest.

While Halo 3 saw first-day sales of over $170 million in the US, David's next game may be his biggest yet. Last month, Infinity Ward revealed that David would be joining the cast of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which analysts believe may become one of the best-selling games ever upon its November 10 release. Recently, GameSpot got to talk to David about the upcoming actioner, a possible Mass Effect 2 role, and the craft of voice acting in games.

GameSpot: I guess the first question with Modern Warfare 2 is, how did you get involved in the project?

Keith David: Somebody asked me.

GS: So they wanted Keith David, specifically?

KD: Yeah.

GS: When did you actually record your vocal sessions?

KD: I'm still working on it. We still have one or two more sessions to go.

GS: So you're still recording?

KD: You know, what happens is, we go in, we do some, and then they fit it into the game. Then we go back and, if we have to, do something over. But we save the explosive stuff for last, the heavy battle stuff.

David's commander will train US soldiers to fight enemies like these.

GS: So you kind of start off with your basic dialogue and then get into the actual bloody mayhem Black Hawk Down kind of thing?

KD: Yeah.

GS: So what's the name of the character you play?

KD: I'm playing a commander, but forgive me if I don't remember his name right this second.

GS: So you're playing a US commander?

KD: Yes.

GS: Is it a major role?

KD: Well, I haven't seen the whole game yet. But I believe it's a pretty major role. I start training the player and then we take the player into battle. So, I think it's pretty major.

GS: How many lines do you think you recorded for the game?

KD: Oh, my God. Put it this way, I still have 150 lines more to go.

GS: So how many hours do you think that would translate into?

KD: I'm sure all wrapped and done, it'll be 10 hours.

GS: That's just one character, right?

KD: Right.

GS: Were you a fan of the Call of Duty series before?

KD: My son is.

GS: So you'd seen it before.

KD: As I was telling Keith [Jr.], I am so wonderfully impressed with the quality of the graphics. I have been in animation for a while now, voicing animation. One of the things that made me want to be an actor was cartoon voices and narration. So I've been watching cartoons for over 50 years, and I marvel at the way CGI has come in and turned things around.

Now, you know as well as I do, the gaming industry has surpassed, in some way, the movie-making industry as far as first-day bankability. I don't know of a film yet that has made a $150 million on the first day, as some of these games have. Well, at least one of them, Halo 3, has. I don't know of another film that has even come close to that.

Scottish actor Kevin McKidd (Rome, Trainspotting) will be voicing one of the SAS commandos in Modern Warfare 2.

GS: Well, they're already saying Modern Warfare 2 might be the biggest-selling game of all time.

KD: Yeah. It's huge. And as such, what I absolutely adore about [Infinity Ward producer] Keith Arem and his work and his team is that they're painstaking. This game looks incredible. I don't play these games and it makes me want to play because it's so exciting. There's always something happening. I'll watch the situations that the player's getting ready to go in and it's like, "Holy s***!"

You know, if you go on YouTube and you can look at some actual footage of soldiers in Iraq bombing and sniping, and it is as exciting or--in some cases, not as exciting--as the game. In the game, you don't want to sit around waiting for the two hours for the enemy to actually show up.

GS: I interviewed Ray Liotta in 2002 and we talked about his work on Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. He said he had to watch the developers act out some scenes because the graphics weren't done. How far has the process come since then?

KD: Oh, no. My graphics are done. I actually get to watch the thing itself, and the creators, they explain what I'm about to go through. And I'm not always the first one. Some of the other voices are already on there. Tomorrow, I think, is my last session. I'll go in and they will have put in what I voiced up until now. So, I'll get to hear some of the stuff I've done already, which is exciting. [NOTE: Interview was conducted last week. --Ed.]

GS: Does that really help you in your performance, to hear yourself?

KD: Every little bit helps.

GS: Has the process come along since you did Halo 3 and Mass Effect?

KD: Yeah. It's the nature of the development of electronic equipment. As soon as you get a piece of technology, that's only the latest piece that they let you see. It's not that they don't have a generation after that prepped and ready. So, of course, it does improve. You know, sometimes quantitatively, you know.

GS: So your first game role was in Lords of EverQuest in 2003?

Game graphics have come a long way since David's first game gig, 2003's Lords of EverQuest.

KD: Yeah. What I remember about that, you could fill a thimble with. But what we did back then, it might as well have been pinball, because they've come so far.

GS: Now, as someone who has done a lot of voice-over work, are you seeing traditional actors becoming more interested in games as a legitimate extension of the acting craft?

KD: Yeah, I mean, just as it has in the voice-over world. There was a time when commercials were only done by announcer guys. And the announcers were mostly sports announcers, news announcers, and they had a kind of delivery that was stentorian and impersonal in a way. That was the style of the day.

Now we've come a long way since then and the style of commercials have become more like storytelling, more inviting, you know. You're very much more personable. And this is also true in the gaming industry. Now it's not just a disembodied robotic voice telling you what to do; now it is the sergeant talking to you personally, the player.

So now, yeah, we're talking to the player directly. We're interacting with the player. In fact I don't know if the word "interactive" was even in the vocabulary 30 years ago.

HALO 3 & VOICE-ACTING RESIDUALS
GS: Now, you mentioned Halo 3, which actually made $170 million on day one in the US alone. Was it kind of strange being part of such a huge project that was so massively hyped by Microsoft?

KD: Well, I mean, I didn't know anything about that. The result--that took place later. I don't even think they knew. I mean, they didn't know until after the first two [Halo games] came out that it would be as big as it was.

David got a flat fee for playing the Arbiter in Halo 3, which went on to make nearly $377 million in the US alone.

So, I try not to put my mind into other people's pockets, as far as who participates in the profit and whatever. Because we look at those numbers and we are awed by them, because they're awesome numbers. But you don't know how much money they had to spend in order to get there. So, you don't know who has to be paid back. Everybody's got expenses, you know.

Just like the fighter that makes a $50 million dollar purse. He's got trainers to pay, he's got gyms to pay, and there's all that back stuff that he's got to pay. So, as good money as it is, who knows how it gets doled out?

So, I mean, I am happy with what I get, though it would be great if one of these days we get to get residuals.

GS: Yeah, that was actually going to be my next question. The recent threatened Screen Actors Guild strike was partly due to residuals from the Internet. Now I've heard that game voice actors don't get residuals, as you would in a film or a television show.

KD: That's true. We do not participate in residuals.

GS: Do you ever foresee that happening?

KD: You know, I would like to see that happen, for obvious reasons. However, it's my philosophic belief about the world to say that we have seen in more than one circumstance around the world how absolute power corrupts absolutely and greed will destroy.

Now I mean, the producers and the creators, hopefully they are making money. But when you start making multimillions of dollars and billions of dollars, why shouldn't the people who helped you get there also participate? One of these days, it'll come to a head. But that may not be in my lifetime, and I don't worry myself about that. Yes, I do wish I could participate because it would be only fair, in the same way that we have always participated residually in the products that we participate in.

Captain Anderson, David's character in Mass Effect, might not be in Mass Effect 2.

I mean, in the karmic sense, everything goes around and comes around. You see examples all the time, when you see some of the great philanthropists, the manner in which they give back to the everyday guy who helps to make them get where they are. Those people are far happier than the people who die worrying about every penny they pinch.

GS: So, are you going to be in Mass Effect 2 as well?

KD: I hope so. I hope they ask me. We'll see.

GS: Is there some kind of particular genre of game you want to be part of?

KD: I like to work, man. That's my criteria. I do it and because of the quality and caliber, and the creators are becoming more creative and therefore it's more fun to participate in.

GS: Is there a game out there you wish you had been in?

KD: I'm not familiar enough with the games to say, but I do know that my son plays a lot of games. I'd like to play a lot more games.

GS: According to your IMDb page, you've been in around 150 games, movies, and television shows. Are there any of those that you would have liked to have seen turned into a video game?

David in They Live.

KD: Gargoyles. Spawn. I would have loved to see Spawn: The Game. What would that look like? Wow. That could be fun. [NOTE: There have been several games based on the Spawn franchise. There was also a 1995 Sega Genesis game based on Gargoyles. --Ed.]

GS: I took an impromptu survey of guys around the GameSpot offices, and They Live came up as a dream game adaptation from your resume. Is there going to be a sequel to that, by the way?

KD: I've heard some talk; there's nothing confirmed as of yet. Like I said, hopefully when it comes up, I'll be there.

Raj the Showman Review

Kannada film Raaj, the Showman directed by Prem starring Puneet Raj Kumar [ Images ] and Priyanka Kothari is a technically good film with fantastic music. Puneet Raj Kumar has shouldered the responsibility of the entire film with his brilliant performance and fights. But the film suffers. And that is mainly because of director Prem's half- hearted work.

The film belongs to Puneet who shows tremendous energy while performing a role that lacks consistency. Fights have always been his strong point but they have been overemphasised in Raaj. He has also tremendously improved in his dubbing work.

Harikrishna who has composed the music and Krishna who has worked behind the camera have done their work remarkably well. Hari Krishna's background score is also top class. The way Krishna has shot the two songs -- Hey Paro and Poli Ivanu -- deserves appreciation.

Raaj is made with huge production values, lilting music, top class cinematography, lovely choreography and some superb fights just required for a superstar. It has everything except a good script (by director Prem himself) and a credible story line.
His idea of having a song with the five heroines of Dr Raj Kumar has failed to make any impact.

To be fair to Prem, there are certain sequences that are good like the hero's introduction scene in the prison and the twist at the interval.

The story goes like this: Muththuraj who stays happily with his parents in a village, has only one desire; to be an actor. He comes to the city to become a junior artist in films. An associate director who has full confidence in his talents starts his new film with Muththuraj as the hero. But the film's heroine Parvathy walks out. Sensing that his chance to become a hero will be under a threat, Muththuraj starts pestering her to work with him.

Meanwhile, one of her relatives who has underworld connections wants to marry her. She is forced to escape with Muththuraj. The second half deals with how Muththuraj saves Parvathy and realises his dream.

Puneet has given a brilliant performance as Muthuraj. Priyanka's lack of talents is more than compensated by her skin show. Muni and Aadi Lokesh score well as the villains. Shankar Aswath shines in a small role.

All in all, Raaj is just an average film that will be remembered only for Puneet's performance and the songs.

I know a lot has been written about getting backlinks here. Despite knowing this I can't resist writing on this topic. Please note, you don't have to spend a single penny to get these back-links. So, this article is about getting easy backlinks for free. I am sure you will find this article a bit different from the ones present on the web.

Email requests to webmasters

I know you have read about this a large number of times but stull there is something missing. You can not get a back-link or a link exchange from quality and related sites by simply shooting an email to the webmaster. Do it my way to gain success. First put a link to the site you want to exchange links with on a page of your site, the page should have some content on it and must have some traffic. The page you are putting a link on must also be easily accesssable by search engine bots. After you have done this, wait for a few days and let the webmaster realize he is getting traffic from your site. Once he sees traffic coming to his site from a page, he will visit the page and analyze it. After a few days write to him that you want to exchange links with him and you will be happy to keep his link on your site if he is willing to link back to your site. Try this and get quality back-links from related sites.

Establish other related sites and blogs

I love doing this. Apart from giving me some good back-links it also increases the number of sites I own and sooner or later every site start fetching some traffic which means it pays helps me make more money.
I thought the title of this was self explainatory, in case it was not let me explain. Make some sites or blogs with related keywords to your site and get back-links to your site from them. No need to make huge sites. Sites or blogs with 20 to 30 pages will be enough and once it start paying you back through ad revenues or something , you might want to increasy the number of pages to earn more.

Link directories

This is the easiest way to get some free backlinks. All you have to do is find some quality free directories, choose a related category for your site and submit your site to that proper related category. As choosing a proper category will increase chances of your link being accepted, it will also insure you get back-link from related keywords which is one of the best SEO practices.

TIP 1: While submitting your sites to link directories, don't forget to write a proper description of your site with some of your keywords in it.

TIP 2: Don't leave the keywords field empty as it is not mandatory.

(The above two tips will ensure you get your keyword from a page with related keywords.)

TIP 3: Keep on changing the text in title tag while submitting to directories so that Google don't take your site for spam.

Social Networking

If the search engine bots can crawl a social network, then the back-link is useful otherwise its of no use. Example Search engines can't crawl Orkut so a back-link from Orkut is pretty worthless, in contrast to that search engine bots can access FaceBook pages and thus a backlink from FaceBook might help improve your search engine ranking.

Comments

Commenting gives you a free backlink but don't take it for granted. Try to comment something related to the topic and your comment must add value to the topic. The owner of the article should not think that you haven't even read the article and you are commenting just to get a back-link. Please don't add comments like, "nice info", "great article" etc and get yourself blocked. In order to get more benefits from comments, try to find blogs or articles having same keywords as your site and then comment on them.

Articles
Although I haven't tries this one myself, but people claim that this is a good way of getting backlinks. All you have to do is submit some articles on article directories. Have links to your site in the text of the article as well as the resource box. When someone will copy your article to his/her blog, you will get backlinks. Your articles should be unique and well written if you want to get some quality backlinks through your articles.

3. Your content should be unique and original. An article should contain atleast 500-1500 words. This step is the most import SEO step which alone can bring massive web traffic.

4. Use inner links. Inner links mean link to your own page. Example ‘HOME’, usually we give our site address as hyperlink. Use as many inner links as possible. Use inner links. Linking increases SEO ranking I mean Search engine ranking.

9. Use Miss-spelling like for bat- bst, bay, bar, bats, batd, bata etc. Don’t laugh you will get lot of traffic of it! This SEO technique can bring good amount of hits to your website. So deliberately make spelling mistakes.

10. Use keyword for FOLDER Names. Suppose you are saving drug Rehab Centre.html then place it in a folder named ‘Drug_Rehab_Center’. Folder Name under which your files lies should be named appropriately. Keyword naming for folders and files increases your chanes to get up in search engine ranking. Swine flu: 9 deaths in 24 hrs, death toll climbs to 17

Pune A 48-year-old man and a 50-year old woman succumbed to swine flu in Pune on Wednesday afternoon, taking the toll in the deadly pandemic to 17.

Gautam Shelar, 48, a driver, was brought from KEM hospital on August 10 to Sasoon Hospital in a critical condition.

In Pune, Nita Meghani, 50, who was admitted to Sasoon Hospital in a critical condition four days ago, died on Wednesday afternoon.

With the latest flu deaths, the toll in Maharashtra due to the viral infection has risen to 13 deaths.

In Pune, the worst hit city in Maharashtra, A 33-year-old man suffering from swine flu died on Wednesday morning at a government hospital in Pune.

Balu Kuland was diagnosed with H1N1 and died at the Sassoon hospital, a senior official said.

A 38-year-old doctor Rupesh Gangurde died of the viral infection at the Nashik civil hospital on Wednesday morning, hospital sources said.

He was admitted to a private hospital on Monday after he complained of vomitting and fever, they said. His blood samples were sent to Pune for testing after which the report tested positive for H1N1.

Gangurde was brought last night to the Nashik civil hospital where he died at 0230 hours, they said.

in Pune, Shrawani Deshpande died at 2.30 AM on Wednesday morning following severe lung infection caused by the virus, attending doctors said.

Shrawani, a resident of Kothrud area, was admitted to Sasoon hospital in a critical condition on August 10 after being referred from Sashwat private hospital, they said.

So far, the flu has claimed a total of 14 lives – one each in Ahmedabad, Vadodra, Thane, Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram, two in Mumbai and seven in Pune.

As the Centre and the states intensified their battle against the infection, central teams have been despatched to all states and Union Territories after Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad chaired a meeting of 35 additional secretaries and joint secretaries drawn from various ministries who would fan out across the country.

He briefed the teams personally yesterday before they were dispatched to the state capitals.

While 14 additional secretaries would go to the big states, the joint secretaries would got to other states and Union Territories. The teams would stay there for two-three days and would return by August 15.

Azad also spoke to all Chief Ministers and told them to step up preparedness.

The health minister requested the Chief Ministers to chair the first meeting of these teams so that on-the-spot decisions are taken for swift implementation, a senior health ministry official said.

The Central teams will discuss with state governments new guidelines issued by the ministry of health and family welfare with record to capacity building issues such as identification of labs for testing and hospitals in private and public sectors for screening, diagnosis and treatment of swine flu patients.

Hyderabad: India's Saina Nehwal defeated Anastasia Prokopenko of Russia 21-10, 21-17 to advance to the pre-quarterfinals of the World Badminton Championships in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

It took World No 6 Saina a mere 27 minutes to dispatch the feeble Russian challenger.

She will next face 10th seed Petya Nedelcheva of Bulgaria who beat Aiying Xing of Singapore 26-24, 19-21, 21-16 in a tough encounter.

Saina, who was down with chicken-pox a week back, showed no signs of tiredness even though she committed a couple of unforced errors in the second game.

Prokopenko was no match for the Indian who engaged her Russian opponent in long rallies before going for the kill.

Saina, India's best medal hope in the tournament, said she had done her homework for the match.

"I was playing against her (Prokopenko) for the first time. She also plays doubles and yesterday (Tuesday) I came to see her match. I was ready with a plan," said Saina.

"She is a very good net player and is good with the dribble. She has a good smash. So, I decided to go more for rallies than quick-finishing smashes.

"I was not feeling tired so that's a good sign. But tomorrow (Thursday) I face a tougher opponent and will have a better idea of my fitness level," added Saina, who got a bye in the first round.

On the pressure to play at home, Saina said she is not bogged down by expectations.

"I am not feeling any pressure, the crowd was good and it will only help the sport in the country," she said.

Saina kept herself ahead in the first game and never looked in trouble. She opened up a 6-3 lead and then grabbed four points at 12-8 to race to 16-8. She was in command from 16-10 and took five points in a reel.

The second game was a bit close as Saina's errors allowed Anastasia to nose ahead 7-6. But Saina managed to break free from 13-14 with some deceptive drop shots.

"Because of the drift from one end, the shuttle was coming faster. And on the other side it's slow. But it's better than it was in the Indian Open when there was more drift," she said.

In the men's doubles, Akshay Dewalkar and Jishnu Sanyal lost to 16th seed Vitalij Durkin and Alexandr Nikolaenko of Russia 21-17, 13-21, 18-21 in the second round.

n a major setback to Adani Powers, the principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF) has rejected its proposal for operating a captive
coal mine in the vicinity of Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) for its 1000 MW power plant in Gondia, home town of civil aviation minister Praful Patel.

Additional chief secretary (revenue and forest) J P Dange on Monday confirmed that his office had received a comprehensive report from the PCCF, saying Adani Powers should not be allotted the 1750 hectare coal block. "We have received the report. It will be placed before the forest minister Babanrao Pachpute as well as chief minister Ashok Chavan for their opinion,'' Dange said.

A senior official said the PCCF has made it clear that if Adani Powers is granted permission to operate a captive open-cast coal mine for its proposed thermal plant, it will have an adverse impact on the environment, particularly on the TATR near Chandrapur.

As per the rules, once a proposal for allotment of a coal block is submitted to the Centre, it seeks the PCCF's opinion on its impact on the environment before further processing the application. In its proposal, Adani Powers has submitted a comprehensive mining plan, rehabilitation plan and wildlife conservation plan to the ministry of environment and forest.

A week ago, Pachpute had told TOI that till the PCCF submits the report, it will be premature to comment on the on-going agitation against the multicrore power project, while Praful Patel had taken the view that a right balance should be struck between environment and development. "We expect that the CM and Pachpute will take a decision on the PCCF recommendations within a week and submit the report to the Centre,'' a senior forest official said.

Barring Praful Patel, all MPs from Vidarbha led by Congress MP Vilas Muttemwar have opposed the proposal for allocation of the coal mine block on the ground that its operation would cause colossal damage to the rich biodiversity in and around TATR and seriously endanger the very existence of tigers in the reserve, rated as the best in India in terms of tiger population.
