Dear Readers,

I am delighted to introduce author Frances Greenslade, whose novel SHELTER (published by Free Press) comes out today in the U.S. Frances is the author of two memoirs and is the winner of the Saskatchewan Book Award for Non-Fiction. Aside from her busy writing life, she also teaches English in Penticton, BC. I invited Frances to write a little something about her creative process while writing her novel. I was lucky enough to get an advance review copy of her book and I simply loved it. This is what I said in the blurb I wrote for Shelter: Shelter is: “one of those take-your-breath-away kind of tales that someone tells you in childhood and years later, still haunts you. It is an unforgettable novel about love, loss, family and what it means to go home.”

First, before Frances, a little snippet about the book from her publisher:

The novel opens with a pre-teen Maggie Dillon describing the idyllic marriage between her parents, Irene and Patrick, which she and her sister grew up sheltered in during the first decade of their lives. Set in the 1960s Chilcotin region of British Columbia, Greenslade deftly portrays the dual nature of the Canadian frontier: a simple, serene place to live, yet also a vast and dangerous wilderness. Maggie, a worrywart to the core, narrates how although her parents seemed happy, her childhood was tinged with a constant uneasiness that something would go wrong. She says: “I worried about leaving Mom at home alone, about the wild way she swung the ax when she was splitting kindling and the way Dad nagged her to be careful […] you think a thing, you open a door. You invite tragedy in. That’s what my worry taught me.”

At a recent reading, I met a group of writers who got together this past fall to participate in National Novel Writing Month. It’s a way to force yourself to quit dithering and finish the novel that’s been languishing in the back of your mind for years. The idea is to write 50,000 words, a complete novel, in a month. I like the concept because it reminds me of the way I wrote as a kid, when I made myself a desk from some boards in the attic and, every day, wrote pages and pages of longhand in a sky-blue notebook. But the writers said it was harder than they expected. So they asked me where I begin and what works to keep me going.

With Shelter, I began with two things: a setting and a character. Maggie, the narrator, “visited” me on a road trip I took with my husband-to-be, north to the Chilcotin region of British Columbia. We traveled in his old hatchback Volkswagen Scirocco, which some nights, when his fear of bears overwhelmed him, became our tent. The region cast a spell on me. It felt haunted by stories of people who were looking for a place to escape to, people for whom there was no turning back. Maggie struck me as a girl who valued independence above almost anything else. She listened carefully to her father’s lessons about how to survive in the bush. Because I had lost my own mother, I identified with her need to feel capable. Her voice quickly came to dominate my imagination. I listened to her, and her story began to take shape.

Putting my faith in characters means I’m often surprised by the direction that a novel takes. It’s the greatest pleasure of my writing life, the moment when the characters pull me into their stories, insisting on taking a path that I didn’t plan. In the novel I’m currently writing, a character named Gord, meant to play a minor role as a neighbor that the protagonist doesn’t know whether to trust or not, has elbowed his way into the novel and become much more central to the story. Mornings, I’d sit down to write, full of plans to move along to a different scene, and there was Gord again in his flannel shirt, his boots the size of small boats, and his confession that when he hunts, he sometimes just sits at the edge of the woods and watches birds for hours.

What keeps me going is the tug of the story. I think of it like fishing. I cast, let the line sink deeper, daydream, stare into the water, then reel in and cast again. I don’t wait around for inspiration, though. The physical act of writing inspires me. I write, pay attention to the tug, and follow it. Someone once gave me the useful advice to just start writing wherever you’re interested. That’s the tug. You feel something stir. You want to explore it.

I admit there are times when I’ve followed something that I’ve then had to toss out: eighty pages from the middle of Shelter that meant I then had to re-write the ending as well. But re-writing is easier when I know my characters. I try to understand their most powerful desires. Those desires guide the direction of the plot.

I don’t mean to sound glib about how to lay down the pages. In a month, I’m lucky to get a chapter written. But I often think about that little girl in the attic and how much joy she felt as she was writing in the sky-blue notebook. It’s the joy I’m going for.

(WRITERS) The PEN Center USA Emerging Voices Fellowship—is an eight-month fellowship for emerging writers, who lack access, to provide them with the tools they will need to launch a successful writing career. The Fellowship includes a $1000 stipend; a one-on-one professional mentorship; UCLA Extension Writers' Program classes; a Master class focused on genre; a public speaking class; and several public readings.

(ART HISTORY SCHOLARS) Henry Moore Foundation Post-doctoral research fellowship—Grant of up to £21,000 per annum towards the fellowship. Deadline: 11 June, 2012

The Henry Moore Foundation will support a small number of two-year post-doctoral research fellowships in the field of sculpture studies at a British university from the autumn of 2012. Managed by the Henry Moore Institute, these Fellowships assist scholars who have recently completed doctoral studies to prepare a substantial publication or similar research output. The Foundation will award a grant of up to £21,000 per annum towards the fellowship.
Applicants must have an affiliation with a university department who will act as the host to the Fellow. Fellows will be expected to present the development of their work every six months to the Henry Moore Institute, a centre for the study of sculpture based in Leeds.
The Fellowships run for two years, however if the Fellow does not fulfill his/her obligations to the University in the first year, the second year's funding could at the Foundation's discretion be revoked.

Preconditions
The conditions for all scholarships with the exception of the curator scholarship are a completed course of study in art (M.F.A. or comparable degree) and two or three years (depending on the respective scholarship) of continuous artistic work after the conclusion of the studies. Applications are also possible for autodidacts distinguished by special artistic achievements, as documented by exhibitions and prizes.
To foster artistic dialog and interdisciplinary collaboration, knowledge of German, English or French is expected.
The curator scholarship is awarded to persons who are not older than 35 years or whose university degree (at least M.A., preferably Ph.D.) was completed not more than 5 years ago.
For the curator scholarship, mastery of the German language spoken and in writing as well as good knowledge of English or French is essential.
I. International residence scholarships
Six residence scholarships will be awarded to international visual artists.
Each scholarship lasts six months. They ordinarily begin in April 2013 and are endowed with 1,200 EUR per month. They include free accommodation at the Kuenstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral.
II. Project scholarship
The project scholarship, which is not tied to any site, will be awarded to an international visual artist. The project scholarship lasts for 6 months and begins in April 2013. It is endowed with 1,200 EUR per month.
Eligible are international applicants with permanent residence in the Federal Republic of Germany. The artistic project should be realized within the scholarship period of 6 months so that it can possibly be integrated in the annual exhibition of the scholarship holders.
III. International curator scholarship
To foster dialog between research and art, Balmoral awards a residence scholarship to a young scholar in the humanities (preferably art history) for a curatorial project to be developed by the scholarship holder and the Kuenstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral.
The scholarship lasts 6 months and begins in April 2013. It is endowed with 1,200 EUR per month and includes free accommodation at the Kuenstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral.
IV. Foreign and exchange scholarships exclusively for artists with relation to Rhineland-Palatinate
Relation to Rhineland-Palatinate means is born in, has studied in, has lived or lives in Rhineland-Palatinate.
• One six-month scholarship for New York (Flux Factory)
• One three-month scholarship for South Korea
• One six-month scholarship for the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris (July to December)
• One five-month scholarship for Künstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf, Brandenburg/Germany
The foreign and exchange scholarships are endowed with 1,200 EUR per month.
Awarding of scholarships
A jury of specialists will award all scholarships, taking into consideration the developmental potential of the applicant's artistic or theoretical work. The names of the jurors will be published after the selection.

AIRs become part of a dynamic community of artists participating in Headlands’ other programs, allowing for exchange and collaborative relationships to develop within the artist community on campus. I am sorry to have to say this—but someone just wrote one of my judges today, insulting the art of one of the winners, and telling her that she made a poor choice. I am assuming that no one else is foolish and unprofessional enough to do this but if you are thinking of it, DO NOT WRITE MY JUDGES personal emails about their choices. That is really out of line! Let's just take a moment to celebrate the fine art that was submitted by ALL and not be bitter and self-righteous.

Sorry to have to write that but you never know who is out there, lurking in the shadows....

Art Contest 2012: The Winners Have Been Announced!

Well, after much deliberation, the results are finally in for the art contest. First, before I tell you who the judges picked, I want to say that the art submitted was fantastic and that it was a hard decision to make for the judges: Mary Sherman, Director of TransCultural Exchange and Wendy Watson, Curator at the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum. So thanks to not only them for helping out with this contest but thanks to all of you who entered! Okay....on to the winners: KAROL SLOWIK for first place and LILY MORRIS for second....read on....

First, a big congratulations to Karol Slowik for winning first place! Karol is from Poland but now lives in New York and you will hear more about Karol's work in the future when we do a special interview later this spring. Karol won a $500 prize and will soon be featured on this blog until the next contest. Here is some of Karol's work (scroll down to see Lily's work too).

Lily Morris, from Massachusetts, won second place. She received a $100 prize. Below are some of her paintings. She is only three years out of college and I think she has quite a bright future before her.

Tiny Circus is a community-based collaborative art project that uses stop-motion animation to make and tell stories. Our animations are simple and accessible, as they have been created with a broad audience in mind. The short films we create with groups of all ages are projected in public spaces from a vintage airstream trailer, a rolling magic lantern. We hope to inspire audiences to reconsider the ways that we use assumptions, beliefs and storytelling to order our world.

During the Summer Session we take a break from travel and intensive workshops and work together in Grinnell, Iowa on as-of-yet unfathomed projects – animation and collaboration will be central to our work, as well as envisioning new ways to communicate stories and ideas. Our 2012 summer session will run from June 15 to July 15 in Grinnell, Iowa. We are looking for both short and long term participants with varied skills and an interest in collaborative community art creation. No specific experience is necessary. Each participant pays $10/day; this covers food (much from our own garden), stay in a wonderful big old house, and materials. Okay people, here is a ton of things that have been piling up....and by the way, you might not hear from me for a short while because I am frantically trying to come up with a proposal so I can sell my next book (my husband is still out of work, after having lost his job over a year ago....don't be shy, go ahead and make a donation so we can pay our mortgage one more month!). (ARTISTS) An Artists Residence at Cregg Castle Arts Venue, Corrandulla, Co. Galway, Ireland

Cregg Castle is one of the last, if not actually the last of the ” Fortified Mansions” built in Ireland the entire building is an interesting display of three centuries of advancement in fortified building. It is located in rural splendour on about 180 acres of magical woodland, meadow and pasture. There is also a spring well and a river meanders through part of the land.

This is a great opportunity to join a team of like-minded Artists and become one of the key people to transform this beautiful Castle into an Arts Venue as well as a creative environment to live and work. The rent per week is € 100 -120 with one day per week allocated to working on the venue.

Each Artist will have a medium to large comfortable bedroom with an en-suite or shared between two. The bedrooms will be heated be by a pot belly stove. Communal areas include a large internal studio with store and coffee room of a lounge, the large kitchen/dining room, living rooms and music room and then a presentation/workshop/movie room. The rent agreement ranges to reflect the rooms. Each artists has an external personal (stable) workshop. Bills included in the rent are electricity, TV and Wi-Fi and an Insurance policy for all artwork. Firewood for our heat is available on the property. We hope to grow our own vegetable garden with in the one acre wall garden.

The venue also encompasses a large Gallery, Gallery/ Office. The plan is to host resident group exhibitions, external / internal workshops and events. It will be open to the public from Thursday – Sunday each week. A 20% commission will apply on sales from the gallery which will be invested back into the venue.

The Gallery website will promote the resident artists which will also have links to each of their personal sites.

(PRINTMAKERS) Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop 2012 Studio Immersion Project Fellowship—Studio Immersion Project (SIP) is an intensive 3 month studio fellowship designed to immerse artists in the world of printmaking. SIP Fellows will acquire new techniques and build upon existing skills. Artists, from all media, interested in making printmaking a regular part of their creative practice are invited to apply.

SIP recipients will receive the following:

(ARTISTS) / studio lâmina / Artist Residence in São Paulo, Brazil—studio lâmina is a home-gallery and an artist residence dedicated to all contemporary art manifestations and based in the midst of São Paulo’s historical downtown, at Anhangabaú valley.

studio lâmina provides a room along the gallery specially to host the resident artist. The resident artist can stay from 2-4 months to develop or conclude his artwork project in any area of artistic creation. Because of it’s presence into the heart of of São Paulo and in the midst of its history and poignant reality, studio lâmina gives preference to projects which are interested in dialogue with the events that surround it. The next artist residence program is planned to start in August 2012.

Where Would You Be Without Your Library? Library Fellowships and More!

Greetings dear readers,

Today I'd like to take a moment to mention the wonder of libraries. For me, growing up in an unstable home during a turbulent time in America, the library was my sacred sanctuary. I discovered vast and enchanting worlds inside the pages of those books and I will forever be grateful to all those librarians who helped lead me down the path to the great world of literature.

You might not know this but all over the U. S. (and other countries as well) there are libraries that offer long and short term fellowships so that you, dear writer, artist, scholar, whatever you are, can do in-depth research. Many people who aren't affiliated with an academic institution are intimidated by some of these programs because they are housed in scary places like Harvard University or Yale. But fear not! If you have enough experience under your belt in the form of publications or musical compositions or whatever it is you do, you should feel more than welcome to apply as an "independent scholar" (unless, of course, the application states that you must have a PhD and you don't, so please read the application guidelines carefully!)

Below are just a couple that are offered among dozens and dozens throughout the U.S. Many of them even offer travel money and have extensive art collections. One to check out for the future (the deadline is passed at the moment) is the the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas, which annually awards over 50 fellowships to support research in all areas of the humanities, including literature, photography, film, art, the performing arts, music, and cultural history.

And to find more, just do a simple google search for "library fellowships 2013" and you are on your way. But first, before you scroll down to read about these opportunities, take a minute to watch this delightful video about one of the local libraries in my neck of the woods. It will remind you why you love libraries and why you need to keep supporting them any way you can. Enjoy!

(LGBT) LGBT Visiting Scholars Program: Martin Duberman Visiting Scholars
Each year, The New York Public Library provides stipends for up to three Martin Duberman Visiting Scholars. The stipends support travel to New York City and related expenses to do research in the Library’s premier LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) history collections. The travel grants awarded range from $1,000 to $8,500. The program is limited to emerging scholars—those without permanent academic appointments—or those who are unaffiliated with an academic institution. Recipients must supply a written summary of their findings upon completion of their work. Interested applicants should send a 3–5 page research proposal specifying the relevant collections at the Library for their project, a draft budget and itinerary for their planned trip, a CV, and an appropriate letter of recommendation. (CHILDREN'S BOOK WRITERS) Boston Public Library Children's Writer-in-Residence Program—The Associates of the Boston Public Library is now accepting applications for the 2012-2013 Children's Writer-in-Residence Program.

The Children's Writer-in-Residence program is intended to:

Provide an emerging children's writer with the financial support and office space needed to complete one literary work

Promote the awareness of young readers, families and teachers of the Boston Public Library and its resources, by establishing a living link between the Library and the community

Draw attention to the importance of writers and writing in our culture, as well as the many free educational opportunities offered by the Boston Public Library

Applications are due May 15, 2012. Projects eligible for this program are fiction, non-fiction, a script, or poetry, intended for children or young adults. Illustrations may be combined with any of these formats, but are not required. The selected applicant will receive a $20,000 stipend and office space at the BPL's Central Library in Copley Square. (ALL) Houghton Library Fellowships at Harvard University—Houghton Library is the principal rare book and manuscript library of Harvard College. The Library's holdings are particularly strong in the following areas: European, English, American, and South American literature, including the country's pre-eminent collection of American literary manuscripts; philosophy; religion; history of science; music; printing and graphic arts; dance; and theatre. Fellows will also have access to collections in Widener Library as well as to other libraries at the University. Preference is given to scholars whose research is closely based on materials in Houghton collections, especially when those materials are unique; fellowships are normally not granted to scholars who live within commuting distance of the library. Each fellow is expected to be in residence at Houghton for at least four weeks during the period from July 2013 through June 2014 (these do not have to be consecutive weeks), and each fellow is expected to produce a written summary of your experience working with the collection. The stipend for each fellowship is $3,000. Other than the Pantzer Fellowship, applicants need not apply for specific fellowships, as the Selection Committee would determine which fellowship is best suited to your research. Greetings all....just a note today to all you residencies and grant foundations and other institutions who ask me to post about your programs on Mira's List. I appreciate your keeping me updated on deadlines and will continue to do what I can to spread the word about what you do. I have been doing this for four years now and hope I can keep doing it for as long as I can.

In return, please consider making a small donation once and a while to keep this blog going, or consider advertising on my site. It would help immensely. I am unable to work full time due to a disability and do this work for free. It would be great if some of the organizations I post about would donate something sometime (a couple of you have recently so thank you!). Here is a new residency—I don't know anything about it but it is in a region where there are few if any residencies so although you must pay a small amount to stay there, it could be a very interesting experience:

(ARTISTS) the Ang Bahay ng Sining Artist Residency in the Phillippines—Ang Bahay ng Sining or The House of Art is an artist-in-residence program directed to international or local artists which aims to create a cultural exchange between artists and the community. It is an art house for artists who would like to create an art project in collaboration with the local people. Great opportunities lie within this dwelling which implores the result of a mutual trade of ideas, inspiration and experience between diverse cultures. It also serves as a meeting place designed to bring people from different ethnic traditions, backgrounds and walks of life closer to each other which opens a gateway to creating and sharing beautiful moments full of passion in creativity and in life.

Project Objective:

The main objective of Ang Bahay ng Sining is to increase community awareness pertaining to the different mediums in the field of visual arts, music and other artistic crafts which aims to establish Quezon City as the premier arts, culture, music and design hub in Metro Manila.

Disciplines: Drawing/Painting, Film, Media Art, Multi Media, New Media, Performance Art, Photography, Sculpture

Language: English

Location: Ang Bahay ng Sining is located within a commercial road in the center of the vibrant city of Quezon City.

Outcome:

A final exhibition of works will be presented at the end of the residency program wherein the artists would be showcasing their public artworks to the general public at the Bario Obrero Street Art Festival. Artists may also have the opportunity to facilitate outreach programs such as talks, workshops and exhibitions, intended to promote interaction and professional development within the community.

Duration: The artist-in-residence program will invite artists to stay from 1-3 months.

Paid by artist:

The artist would have to pay for their own travel expenses, health insurance, materials, food and personal needs. The residency’s accommodation costs $250 a month which covers wi-fi internet, technical and administrative support and utility expenses. Ang Bahay ng Sining would be offering technical and administrative help, assistance in projects involving wood and metal and electrical; we offer low-prices for photographic prints, canvasses, painting materials and in framing artworks; and promotion of the artist’s and their projects. Artists must be active in the field of contemporary art with an interest in exploration and production of collaborative work during the residency period.

(WRITERS) The Island Institute's Writers' Residencies provide opportunities for four writers of all disciplines to each spend a month in Sitka, Alaska, pursuing their own work while getting to know this unique island community in the forested coastal mountains of Southeast Alaska. Residents' time is largely their own, but each person is expected to take part in five community activities such as readings, discussions, and radio interviews.

Each resident is provided living accommodations (including a kitchen) and a stipend of $75/week toward food costs. Travel to and from Sitka, as well as all other incidental costs, are the responsibility of the resident. There is no application fee. The School of Making Thinking (SMT) is a summer residency program where artists and academics think, create, and live together in a communal setting. SMT’s mission is to create a unique environment where participants are able to create original work that challenges disciplinary conventions of art-making and thinking. The School of Making Thinking sets itself apart from traditional residency programs in three important respects. First, SMT participants hail from a far more diverse range of disciplines. Our alumni are botanists, dancers, playwrights, painters, poets, philosophers, fiction writers, audio documentarians, filmmakers, performance artists, and PhD candidates from English and American Studies departments. Second, collaboration is an essential component of each participant’s project. Third, SMT is a school in which participants teach and learn from one another.

(LATIN AMERICAN ARTISTS) I-Park/ExpressionesResidency Program for Latin American Visual Artists, East Haddam, CT

Application Deadline: April 29, 2012

I-Park is pleased to announce its continuing collaboration with the New London (Connecticut) based Latin American community arts organization, Expressiones, in establishing two reserved residency sessions for Latin American artists in 2012. Visual artists from among the following countries are invited to apply for available 2012 residency slots under this program: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. Expressiones will be the curator, administrator and coordinator of this program.

Of the two accepted artists for 2012, the one receiving the highest jury score will receive a grant of $750 to help defray the cost of travel to the United States. Also, each of the two invited visual artists will be offered a gallery show and artist’s presentation at the Expressiones Cultural Center in New London, CT at some point during their residency session. One of the invited Expressiones artists will be scheduled to participate in I-Park’s October session and the other in November. Refer to the 2012 Calendar for exact dates. An application fee of $30 is required for this program.

Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR), the first artist-in-residency program in the United States exclusively for GLBT emerging artists, is now accepting applications for its 2012 Summer Residency Program to take place in Cherry Grove, an historic GLBT community of Fire Island, New York. Selections for 2012 residents will be made by esteemed jurors Dan Cameron, Senior Curator, Orange County Museum of Art, and by co-founder of Gran Fury and celebrated contemporary artist Marlene McCarty. Hey everyone, long time no see! It has been a whirlwind of craziness. A few weeks ago I found out that I was short listed for something called The National Book Critics Circle Award for Best Autobiography. It was a big deal and I was incredibly surprised. There is no financial award for this but it is a very prestigious thing to be nominated because the people nominating you and deciding on the awards are all the top literary critics in the country. So after reading in NYC this week with all the other finalists, amazing writers, many of whom I have loved and read throughout the years, I found out on Thursday that I actually WON Best Autobiography. Needless to say, it is all very surreal. Hi everyone....sorry I have been out of touch lately. Lots is going on....but I thought I better give you guys something to chew on for a while lest you yell at me for being a slacker! And by the way, remember when I said that the Creative Capital grant letter of inquiry would be a breeze? Well, it was REALLY HARD. The letter was actually a long application of sorts. That's what I've been doing this past week. But you know what? It was well worth it. As I have said in previous posts, it's always good to do these things if you are up for them because they help you define what you want. And then you can also use that template for other grants. Plus, it's a fantastic organization and I can't say enough good things about them, whether or not they give me a grant. The deadline in tomorrow but next year the grant is for visual artists and something else (can't remember at the moment).

NARS International Artist Residency Program provides national and international artists with the opportunity to produce new work while engaging with the vibrant arts community in New York City. Artists-in-residence have access to an individual studio space and various professional development programs. Residents have an opportunity to share and present their work through artist talks, workshops, and lectures and receive studio visits by prominent New York City curators, critics and gallerists.

The NARS Foundation seeks applications on two levels. The first level includes emerging and mid-career artists, for whom appointments as residents may make a significant impact on their careers. KSP Residency Program 2012/2013

The Katharine Susannah Prichard Writers' Centre is the oldest writers centre of its kind in Australia. The centre is located in the Perth hills, in the former home of Katharine Susannah Prichard.

Each year KSPF is proud to promote the craft of writing by hosting a number of writers in our residency program which is funded by the Department of Culture and the Arts. The residency program includes positions for established and emerging writers as well as our young writers residency. As well as allowing each writer the time and space to work on their own writing projects, the writers participate in the events of the centre and run workshops thus sharing their knowledge and experience throughout our writing community.

The residency program for Emerging- and Established Writers-in-Residence is open to artists from all over the world, however the Young Writers-in-Residence should be local and under 25.

The residents will receive a salary of $650 and be given writing space and time to concentrate on, develop or complete a work in progress. The writer will also be invited to participate in Katharine Susannah Prichard (KSP) Writers' Centre activities.

2013 Established Writer-In-Residence

Applications for 2013 Established Writer in Residence must be post marked on or before, Friday, 27th July 2012 (pending funding)

One position.

Full-time period of four (4) weeks, or equivalent part time. Salary: $3500. The Established Writer-in-Residence should have achieved major publication and have demonstrated a commitment towards furthering the status and practice of writing among his/her peers and the community in general. Experience in preparation for and conducting of workshops and seminars is desirable.

The Miami-Dade Public Library System is proud to announce its 2012 Young Adult Writer-in-Residence program funded through a grant from the James L. Knight Foundation. We are seeking a dynamic and engaging Young Adult author who will encourage local teens, 12-18, in the creative writing process. The three month residency will run from September – November 2012 in Miami, Florida.

Eligibility Requirements:

· Must have published at least two young adult fiction books.

· Experience in teaching, writing, mentoring or as a manuscript evaluator or editor.

The 2012 Susan Sontag Prize for Translation

$5,000 grant for a literary translation from Portuguese into English: The deadline is March 9, 2012.

This $5,000 grant will be awarded to a proposed work of literary translation from Portuguese into English and is open to anyone under the age of 30. The translation must fall under the category of fiction or letters, and the applicant will propose his or her own translation project. The project should be manageable for a five-month period of work, as the grant will be awarded in June 2012, and the translation must be completed by October 2012.

(ARTISTS) Session Artists Residency, NYC—Session is an artists residency program based out of NYC's Recess, a nonprofit artists workspace that is open to the public. Session artists receive 2-3 months in one of our storefront spaces, a small honorarium, and a materials stipend (between $500-$2500). The opportunity is open to artists around the world.

Recess is free and open to the public, and we encourage artists to engage with their audience in a manner specific to their creative goals, using Recess as a studio, exhibition space, stage, and/or experimental platform. Artists have access to their space for the full duration of their residency and are expected to work on a daily basis or the equivalent of at least twenty hours per week. They will be given a small honorarium and a stipend based on the material needs of their residency. In conversation with Recess staff, artists designate their own work hours and the degree to which they coincide with public hours.

(ARTISTS) India/Montreal Exchange Residency—The Darling Foundry Visual Arts Centre, the CREATIVE INDIA FOUNDATION, the INLAKS SHIVDASANI FOUNDATION and What About Art? are starting an Artist in Residence program for Indian Artists in Montreal.

The program offers an exchange residency at the Darling Foundry for professional visual artists, Indian citizens residing in India. One artist will be awarded a three-month residency and will receive a grant that contributes toward living expenses, travel fees and production costs.

The Darling Foundry aims to be an alternative, professional complex devoted to visual artists and their supporters. With an outstanding architectural design, The Darling Foundry, located in an old industrial neighborhood of Montreal, offers various opportunities for research, creation, production, and exhibition. Its multifaceted spaces include room for private studios, residencies, workshops, art galleries, a restaurant and offices over a 3500 m2 surface.

A studio plus a separate living accommodation as well as common areas are provided. Artists have access to wood and metal workshops, with technical assistance if need be. In addition, each artist is given the option to participate in open studio events, studio visits by art professionals, networking events, and excursions.

The residency includes:

-Airfare (max CAN$ 2,000)

-A live-in studio for three months from August to October 2012

-A stipend of CAN$ 250 per week

-A production grant of CAN$ 1,000

(ARTISTS, CURATORS, ARCHITECTS) Nida Art Colony on the Baltic Sea Coast: Call for Summer-Autumn Residency. Applications—Nida Art Colony invites artists, designers, architects, curators, and art researchers to meet the coming summer and autumn on the Baltic Sea coast in
the Curonian Spit National Park. The Colony was opened in March 2011 as a
new branch of the Vilnius Academy of Arts (Lithuania). RESIDENCIES are from JUNE-DECEMBER 2012.

Nida Art Colony's remote location and beautiful surrounding landscape provide the time and inspiring solitude missing from modern urban life. Grants: No grants are currently available; selected candidates are issued a letter of support for individual grant seeking. Dates and duration of the residencies: 1 to 4 months between June 1 and December 31, 2012. The recommended duration of a residency is 2 months.

Costs: Studio and living space rent is 412 Eur/month (June-September) and
312 Eur/month (October-December), including all taxes, use of equipment,
communal spaces, bicycles and the minivan. The Colony provides the necessary living and social conditions to ensure a comfortable and unobtrusive coexistence of the five artists-in-residence. Each of the five residencies is set out on two floors with 65 sq. m of floor space and features all the necessary facilities. The colony is situated about 600 metres away from the sand dunes, and a short

(CERAMIC ARTISTS) Core Clay Artist Residency Program, Cincinnati, Ohio—This ceramic Artist Residency program is formatted in a work exchange manner. Resident is provided with an apartment directly next door to the studio, RENT FREE in exchange for a certain number of hours of work per week in the studio. Artist in Residence opportunities include monthly clay outings, studio critiques, clay supplies at cost during residency, free attendance at visiting artist workshops, opportunities to participate in sales at Core Clay as well as opportunities for additional income in exchange for labor beyond the original contract hours. AND a free large, designated studio space.

(ARTISTS) Maker Works Residency in Southeast Michigan—Maker Works is an 11,000 sq. ft. member-based fabrication studio located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It features 4 studio areas: Metal, Circuits, Wood and Craft. Each studio has state of the art tools that most could not afford as well as other tools such as sewing machines, power saws, and welding.

During the months of June- August, Maker Works will host 3 resident visual artists of any medium from the Southeast Michigan area. The intention behind a Maker Works Residency is to give Southeast Michigan artists access to tools that are cost prohibitive for most, such as CNC machines, a laser cutter, and more. Artists applying should seek to push the boundaries of their knowledge and be willing to explore new tools along with using the tools they may already know. All resident artists will be trained on the tools, have access to project storage space, computers & software and other amenities for free. There are 3 categories in which to apply: Craft, Conceptual and Emerging. Maker Works Residencies are 1-month and do not include housing, food or transportation. Postmark deadline is March 15, 2012.
