The objects were found in Nasa's Kepler Mission, a space observatory designed to discover Earth-like planets orbiting other stars.

Its massive telescope monitors the brightness of over 145,000 stars in a fixed field of view in three constellations in the Milky Way.

A 95-megapixel camera records and analyses the passage of planets around those stars by measuring the changes in light radiation.

The findings show 140 of the new discoveries could be similar in size to Earth.

"From the orbital size and the temperature of the star, the planet's characteristic temperature can be calculated," Nasa explains on the mission's website.

"From this the question of whether or not the planet is habitable (not necessarily inhabited) can be answered."

Scientists say the results contradict older theories that had suggested small and Earth-like planets would be less frequent.

An astronomer on the Kepler mission, Dimitar Sasselov, professor of astronomy at Harvard University, revealed the findings in a conference in Oxford earlier this month.

He said the next step would be to determine whether the suspected planets would indeed be habitable.

"The figures suggest our galaxy, the Milky Way, will contain 100 million habitable planets," he said.

"With our own little telescope just in the next two years we will able to identify at least 60 of them.

"There is a lot more work we need to do with this, but the statistical result is loud and clear, and it is that planets like our own Earth are out there."
Don't forget to Subscribe It is really light," he said.
Tseng added that the new phones are built on the same Android 2.1 software that runs Droid smartphones but feature innovations such as 3D graphics and speech recognition. Though it is worth mentioning that the Nexus one phone does not ahve as many apps as the iPhone and it is slightly more expensive at the moment.

Google said it is also launching its own online store, from which the Nexus One can be bought "unlocked" for $529 (£330).

It will ship devices to buyers in Singapore, Hong Kong and Britain, it said.

But if customers in the US buy the handset with a two-year T-Mobile contract, the price starts at $179 (£111).
Google said its European customers should be able to use a Nexus One with a Vodafone contract by the middle of the year.

Don't forget to Subscribe to Lostfanvanjellies22!

Spot the planet

For as long as humans have looked at the night sky we have speculated on the possibility that other planets harbour intelligent life. Now that we are capable of sophisticated scientific probing of the universe, the search for such planets is on in earnest. Nasa launched the Kepler telescope in March 2009 to search for potential life-supporting Earth-sized planets around other stars (kepler.nasa.gov).

The Kepler telescope orbits the sun in an Earth-trailing orbit so that its view of the stars is not blocked periodically by the Earth, moon or sun. The telescope looks fixedly at a star field in our region of the Milky Way in an effort to detect associated planets that are one-half to twice the size of Earth, particularly planets that orbit their stars in the “habitable zone”, where liquid water could exist and where life as we know it might reside.
The Kepler telescope is a special 0.95m-diameter light-meter called a photometer. It has a very large field of view (105 sq degrees) for an astronomical telescope – most telescopes have a field of view of less than one sq degree. Kepler needs to be this big in order to look at a large number of stars simultaneously. It will stare at the same star field for the duration of its entire mission (at least 3.5 years), monitoring the brightness of more than 100,000 stars.
Kepler will use the transit method to detect planets. When a planet passes (“transits”) in front of its star, it prevents a small fraction of light from reaching Kepler. Transits by Earth-sized planets will dim a planet’s detected brightness by one part in 10,000, over a period of two to 16 hours. For a signal to be attributed to a planet, it must be absolutely periodic, it must cause the same change in brightness each time and last the same length of time. In order to achieve reliability, four observations must be made. The time between transits for habitable-zone planets will be about one year and so the mission must last at least 3.5 years in order to make four transit measurements.
The Kepler telescope is fantastically sensitive. Detection of the transit of an Earth-sized planet is a feat equivalent to detecting the dimming effect of a fly crawling across a car headlamp on full beam when observed from a distance of many kilometres. In order to achieve this power and precision, the telescope must be based in space. Earth-based observations would be degraded by atmospheric perturbations, the effects of day and night cycles, and so on. Once detected, the planet’s size can be determined from the extent of the brightness change. The size of the planet’s orbit and its temperature can be determined from the time between transits. This data will tell whether or not life is possible on the planet. Assuming that planets are common around stars such as our sun, Nasa expects that Kepler will detect about 50 Earth-sized planets.
Science takes the possibility of life elsewhere in the universe very seriously. It would be surprising if microbiological life-forms did not exist elsewhere, and we may yet discover them in our own solar system, on Mars, Europa or Titan. But the really exciting prospect is that intelligent self-conscious aliens live elsewhere in the universe and that, some day, we will contact them. The possibility of intelligent alien life has important philosophical and theological implications.
This time around the Vatican, mindful of the Galileo affair and public perceptions about Giordano Bruno, is not going to be caught napping. The church held a five-day conference in Rome in early November to hear scientific experts discussing the possibility of extraterrestrial life and to ponder its implications for the church. In an article in the official Vatican newspaper entitled “Aliens are my brother”, Fr Gabriel Funes, director of the Vatican Observatory, said that the existence of extraterrestrial life does not contradict belief in God. Some witty reporters entitled their covering pieces “ET phone Rome”.
Incidentally, the Catholic Church is often accused of burning Giordano Bruno (1548-1600) at the stake because he taught that the universe is teeming with planets that harbour alien intelligent life. But, according to the Catholic Encyclopaedia , this was not the charge on which Bruno was convicted by the Inquisition. He was convicted for preaching theological errors, such as denying the divinity of Jesus, claiming that the Devil can be saved, and more. Now, don’t get me wrong. I am not defending the burning of the unfortunate Bruno, just trying to present an accurate record. Burning for either reason would be equally wrong and horrible.

Don't forget to Subscribe to Lostfanvanjellies22!

Online Anger As Group Hacks Into Twitter

The internet is abuzz after the hugely popular social media website Twitter was hacked.

A group calling itself the "Iranian Cyber Army" broke through Twitter's defences and managed to divert traffic to its own servers.
There, Twitter users were faced with the group's own logos and images to the site, with a front page that read: "This site has been hacked by Iranian Cyber Army."
"U.S.A. Think They Controlling And Managing Internet By Their Access, But They Don't, We Control And Manage Internet By Our Power, So Do Not Try To Stimulation Iranian Peoples To..."
The ICA's origins are unknown but the online community reacted with shock to what is a major security breach.
"This is unacceptable for one of the world's top 20 most-visited websites," wrote Ben Parr, a blogger on Mashable.
"Nothing compares to what has happened tonight. Twitter was summarily hacked, taken over, and then taken down. Its security protocols were clearly ineffective."

A parody of the Twitter logo
He added, "This is a black eye of epic proportions."
Once the social networking site was back up, one topic dominated the conversation, as "#WhenTwitterWasDown" and "Iranian Cyber Army" quickly became the two most mentioned phrases on the network.
An official message from Twitter on Friday said: "Twitter's (Domain Name System) records were temporarily compromised but have now been fixed. "This is a trial for heresy," said Daniele Gounord, adding that the church was being "hounded" by French courts.

The seven top Scientologists are also charged with illegal practice of pharmaceutical work after plaintiffs said they were given vitamins and concoctions to improve their mental state.

French prosecutors failed to win a conviction in a previous fraud case against the church in 2003.

But this is the first time that the plaintiffs are invoking a 1994 law that could lead to its dismantling.

Under provisions of that legislation, the Scientology Celebrity Centre and a library in Paris could be shut down for failing to live up to their responsibilities as legal entities.

Founded in the United States in 1954 by science-fiction writer L Ron Hubbard, the Church of Scientology was officially recognised as a religion there nearly 20 years later.

Don't forget to Subscribe to Lostfanvanjellies22!

Got Teal'c?

I downloaded this photo from google images and edited with paint. Tested on the Earth, strong signs of life were found in the form of chemical "fingerprints". Analysing the light patterns, known as "transmission spectrums", can reveal chemicals such as oxygen and water, which indicate the presence of life. The test was carried out during a lunar eclipse by observing moonlight passing through the Earth's atmosphere - equivalent to observing the Earth's spectrum from far away as it passed in front of the Sun. Dr Enrie Palle, from the Astrophysics Institute of transmission spectrum of an inhabited planet looks like, we have a the Canaries, wrote in the journal Nature: "Now we know what the much better idea of how find and recognise Earth-like planets outside our solar system where life may be thriving".

<img style="WIDTH: 241px;
A tiny bug found discovered deep under the Greenland ice has been reawakened from a slumber lasting more than 100,000 thousand years.

And scientists believe the unusual bacterium - Herminiimonas glaciei - may hold clues to life on other planets.

Researchers found the bug when they examined a 120,000-year-old, 3km-deep core sample drilled from glacial ice.

It took the scientists the best part of a year to coax the dormant microbes back to life by carefully warming the ice they were housed in.

As the bugs awoke and began to replicate, colonies of tiny purple-brown bacteria started to appear.

H. glaciei belongs to a rare family of "ultramicro" bacteria that live in extreme environments.

It can be up to 50 times smaller than the food bug E.coli.

Dr J Loveland-Curtze, who led the US team at Pennsylvania State University, said: "These extremely cold environments are the best analogues of possible extraterrestrial habitats."

"the exceptionally low temperatures can preserve cells and nucleic acids for for even millions of years."

"H. glaciei is one of just a handful of officially ultra-small species and the only one so far from the Greenland ice sheet."

"Studying these bacterian can provide insight into how cells can survive and even grow under extremely harsh conditions."

She stressed that H. glaciei was not harmfl to humans - which was just as well since it can pass straight through safety filters commonly used in laboratories and hospitals."

But Dr Loveland-Curtze warned that if harmful - or pathogenic - super-small bugs existed they would be hard to detect.

She said: "Other pathogens... could be present in solutions presumed to be sterile.

Don't forget to Subscribe They are highly intelligent and passionate about the things they know are *truly* important in the world. Typically, this does not include sports, cars or make-up, but it can on occassion (and if it does then they know more than all of their friends combined in that subject).

Outcast geniuses can be very lonely, due to their being outcast from most normal groups and too smart for the room among many other types of dorks and geeks, but they can also be the types to eventually rule the world, ala Bill Gates, the prototypical Outcast Genius.

Congratulations!

Also, you might want to check out some of my other tests if you're interested in any of the following:

Thanks Again! -- THE NERD? I came across a button that said "spam poison" on it. It sounded cool so I clicked on it (lostfanvanjellies22 does not condone clicking on random buttons). It was a link to this site. I thought it was an ingenious idea! NO MORE BOTS! YAY!

But I went back later and said ... "Wait a minute. Bots? Spiders? Crawlers on my blog? Do they even exist? I'm pretty sure they do but whether they do or not, if you look closely at both of the codes they are actually just links to the spam poison page! They do not have any significance at all. They're just links!

But maybe the "bots" go to these links rather than searching your blog? that might explain the 10 <ins>million</ins> hits it's getting on a daily basis!
In my opinion - this is just a link. Nothing More. If any of you know about these things and/or if they work or not, or even if you have more buttons to share you know what to do! E-mail me!

P.S. I am leaving it on the sidebar because

It looks cool.

It <ins>might </ins>work.

Don't forget to Subscribe to Lostfanvanjellies22!

Got Teal'c?

I saved this photo from Google Images and opened it with Microsoft Paint, gave him the milk moustache and imported it into Windows Movie Maker.

These books are hilarious! They will keep you laughing for the rest of your life.

The Lord of the Rings Novel

These three volumes are amazing! They are classics and will last for ever. They completely blew me away. The length of them is enough to do that.

The "Lost" Books

I have all of these books. The storyline in them are amazing and add alot more to the lost storyline. They are all written very well but should not be included in the lost continuity storyline. They bring lost back to reality

The Hobbit

You should read this before reading "LOTR". It will help you understand everything by Tolkien. Everything he wrote revolves around this simple book.

Nick Shadow's Midnight Library

A collection of some of his short stories that seem harmless but are actually unharmless/harmful!
The Alex Rider SeriesThese books by Anthony Horowitz are so well written that when the seventh book came out before christmas i started to re-read them. I would recommend starting the reading from book one but the fourth book "Eagle Strike" is by far the best!

The Salmon of Doubt

After the the author of "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" died some nosy guy decided to get some of his essays from his beloved mac computer and publish them along with the first eleven chapters of his unfinished Dirk Gently book. Some essays are very random such as, the letter y, 2 dogs in New Mexico, deadlines abd the sound of music.
"I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by."
Also: check out the meaning of Liff and the deeper meaning of Liff.
Johhny Maxwell Trilogy

These books are not overly funny buit it's well worth the read

The Silmarillion, Children Of Hurin and Unfinished Tales By Tolkien

Classis books that should be read after "The Lord Of The Rings". This book is set in the first age whereas Lotr is in the fifth age.

The Invisible Man By H.G. Wells

If you liked watching the Illusionist you will like reading this. Very appealing.

The Ultimates: Against All Enemies

This book can be a bit tedious at times but generally there is an okay storyline with a lack of action and full-scale wars.

I am Legend
This book does tend to drag on a little bit and is not as fast as the movie but is still worth reading, ideally before the movie.

Tree and Leaf
Don't forget to Subscribe to Lostfanvanjellies22!

Movies

The Lord of the Rings

As you know these films are astonishing but they are very long and I never have enough time to watch them.

Transformers

This movie was confusing at times but it was astonishing. I might have to watch it again. The girl in it is hot ;).

The Bourne Series

Flawless. Absolutely astonishing! These movies are about the C.I.A. and David Webb getting his memory back.

The Pirates of the Caribbean

These are just cool movies. That are fun to watch. Not exactly astonishing but definitely worth it.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

Any fan of "hitchhikers" will love this movie (and books). It is hilarious and astonishing and exactly like anyone would have predicted.

Star Wars

These films are classics. Some of them are not good but others are not so not good. I would recommend IV,III,I and VI

300

A hardcore movie with hardcore action! I think its something about the roman empire but the action distracts you from the storyline.

I, Robot

Based on the novel with the same name this movie provides geeks and nerds alike with a satisfying storyline with odd tidbits of action.

I am Legend

This is an astonishing movie about a disease that (supposedly) kills off the entire planet. The ............guy.............. thats in it wanders around Manhattan, has to eventually find ways to fight off the infected people who are now zombies and even returns dvd's to the store (rental policy). Imagine having the whole of New York to yourself (with evil, dead, zombie-people of course.)

Deja Vu

This movie is highly recommended but it is hard to explain as the character goes back in time. Hence the name.

The Illusionist

This movie is quite mysterious as it involves realistic magic and an interpretable storyline.

Escape From Alcatraz

This movie is slightly dated but still a good one if you like the stroyline. It is like The Great Escape except toned down a little bit.

Monty Python: Life Of Brian

Hilarious!! If you like H2G2 you will like this.

Napoleon Dynamite

A day in the life of a nerd? Very funny film that we can all relate to. All movies about stereotypical nerds have to be funny.

Zodiac

This mysterious movie that is based on a true story will keep you thinking for weeks!

Hancock

This movie is ......... meh. Will Smith is good in it and funny at times. There is an interesting twist in the plot near the end. The movie did lack imagination.

Man on Wire

This is the most tense movie i have ever seen. Imagine a man being supported by a mere wire 450m above the concrete of my beloved NYC. The suspense was painful! I was scared for him.

The Dark Knight

This was the first batman movie I saw. It is interesting to see a superhero that actually doesnt have super-powers! And yes, Heath Ledger is as good in it as everyone says he is as the Joker. He was the best part of the movie!

Contact

This movie gets better as it goes on so do be patient with it. The end can be confusing but still mind-blowing. There was a bit too much drama. Stuff like "Oh, I'm so deprived" but when it gets to faxes from aliens and dimension-travelling balls of metal flying through a big chunk of metal designed by aliens it doesnt get much better!

Angels and Demons

Angels and Demons is a mysterious film about a symbologist assigned to solve a mystery involving the illuminati and the Roman Catholic Church. This is the sequel to the Da Vinci Code so if you liked that you'll like this.

1408

This horror movie (based on a book by Stephen King) is about a paranormal investigator who takes a visit to a haunted hotel room and never gets out.

Don't forget to Subscribe to Lostfanvanjellies22!
