Communicating Across Cultures: Language Learning Perspective

Professors Alfonso Illingworth-Rico, Genevieve Peden, Motoko Tabuse, & Margrit Zinggeler

How can we effectively communicate with people who do not share our language? How do we deal with stereotypes when learning a new language and new cultural norms? This panel presentation will explore ways to effectively communicate with people from French, German, Japanese and Spanish speaking countries with examples of cultural norms. Are you ready to step out of your comfort zone?

Dr. Illingworth is a professor of Spanish, Dr. Peden is a professor of French, Dr. Tabuse is a professor of Japanese, and Dr. Zinggeler is a professor of German. All professors have published articles and books and very active in their own field nationally and internationally.

This event fulfills a portion of the Honors Experience requirement and the LBC component of the General Education requirement.

BHANU KAPIL

Bhanu Kapil writes at the intersection of poetry, prose, non-fiction and a
kind of irreversible yet mutable "document." She is the author of The
Vertical Interrogation of Strangers (Kelsey Street Press, 2001), Incubation:
a space for monsters (Leon Works, 2006), and Humanimal, a project for future
children (Kelsey Street Press, 2009). Nationally, she has given readings of
her work and presented lectures/panel talks on monsters, cyborgs,
architecture, and hybridity. Born in the UK to Indian parents, Bhanu lives
in Colorado, where she teaches in The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied
Poetics at Naropa University . She also maintains a blog, " Was Jack Kerouac
A Punjabi? a day in the life of a Naropa University Writing Professor "
devoted to quotidian and hybrid behaviors of all kinds.

RODRIGO TOSCANO

Rodrigo Toscano latest book is Collapsible Poetics Theater (Fence Books; a
National Poetry Series 2007 selection). He is also the author of To Leveling
Swerve (Kruspkaya Book), Platform (Atelos), The Disparities (Green Integer)
and Partisans (O Books). His poetry has appeared Best American Poetry 2004 ,
War and Peace (2004 & 2007), and in the Criminal's Cabinet: An anthology of
poetry and fiction (2004), and in McSweeny¹s Poets Picking Poets . He was a
2005 recipient of a New York State Fellowship in Poetry. Toscano is also the
artistic director and writer for the Collapsible Poetics Theater (CPT), see

polyvocalic pieces, poetics plays, and body-movement poems, have been
performed at the Disney Redcat Theater in Los Angeles, Ontological-Hysteric

Poetics Theater Festival. His radio pieces have appeared on WPIX FM (New
York), KAOS Public Radio Olympia, WNYU, and PS.1 Radio. His work has been
translated into French, German, Italian, and Catalonian. Toscano is
originally from Southern California. He works in Manhattan at the Labor
Institute, and lives in Brooklyn.

YEDDA MORRISON

Writer and visual artist Yedda Morrison was born and raised in the San
Francisco Bay Area. Her books include Darkness, Chapter 1 (Little Red
Leaves, 2009), Girl Scout Nation (Displaced Press, 2008), My Pocket Park
(Dusie Press, 2007), Co (Collaborations with Bruce Andrews, Roof Books,
2006) and Crop (Kelsey Street Press, 2003). Morrison was a founding editor
of Tripwire: a Journal of Experimental Poetics and Visual Art . She has
performed and exhibited her work in the US and Canada and is represented by
Republic Gallery in Vancouver, BC. She currently lives in Montreal.

Hello Honors students! Just as a reminder--

We are currently inviting applications for the 2009-10 Ullrich Scholarship. The
scholarship was endowed in the memory of John Ullrich, EMU regent from
1975-79. The award is intended to recognize significant campus leadership
provided by an EMU undergraduate. The scholarship is currently $500, to be
applied to the fall semester. To qualify for the scholarship, the recipient
must:

1) be an EMU junior or senior (e.g. must have completed at least 56
credit hours by the start of Fall 2009)

2) have an overall GPA of 3.0

3) show evidence of leadership outside the student's course of normal
study - such as athletics, clubs, projects, or community building
initiatives

4) be selected by the Honors College (Note: applicants do not need to
be members of the Honors College)

Applicants should submit a letter detailing evidence of leadership (not
simply membership) in the activities described (in #3 above). Completed
letters of application should be sent to me at the address below (or dropped
off in the Honors office).

The deadline for applications is July 17th.

Upcoming Major Planning event!!

As an FYI- the Honors College will be hosting an event in two weeks. The title is "Life, The Universe, and Choosing a Major". It will be held in the Honors office in Starkweather, on March 20th (friday) from 2 until 4 pm. The discussion will be led by Dr. L (Dr. Liza Cerroni-Long) from the Anthropology Dept. She is a trained academic and career advisor. Pizza and beverages will be provided.
So, for anyone who is looking for a major, or who is thinking about changing their major, this would be a really wonderful event to attend. Also, if you're just interested in learning more about your personality and what sorts of majors/career options would be a good fit, this would also be a great event to attend.

Just as a quick reminder--Honors Registration is coming soon--registration begins on March 25th. 8 am for students with at least 60 credits, noon for all other Honors students. We'll be sending out the PIN #s the week before.

Also, the deadline for the Fall 2009 Undergraduate Fellowship is on April 1st, 2009. If you're interested, please check out the information on the website, give us a call/email, or stop by the office. You can download the application directly from the website www.emich.edu/honors
Also, if you are on probation for any reason, you are not able to participate in Early Registration or receive an Undergraduate Fellowship.

Free Kaplan Practice Tests

Hello Honors students!
We were recently contacted by a Kaplan representative who let us know that Kaplan is offering a Free Practice test for many of the graduate school admissions tests. The free tests will be held on February 14th, 2009. They will be held at Angell Hall, on the
U-M campus. Here are the tests offered and the times they are offered.

GMAT: 9am-12:30pm
GRE: 9am-11:30am
LSAT: 9:15am-1:30pm
MCAT: 9:15am-1:30pm
DAT: 8:45am-12:30pm
OAT: 8:45m-12:30pm
PCAT: 9am-12:30pm

Tickets are available for Rubberbanddance Group, who are performing on 1/11/09 at the Power Center. Tickets are $20.00 and a $10.00 deposit needs to be paid by 12/10/08 in order to reserve a space. If students would like more information about the performance, they can check out www.ums.org.

Updates on Adopt-A-Family!

There are now posters with information about requested items in the lobby at Downing Hall. Attached to the posters are pre-approved item slips if you would like to make an individual purchase. There is a box underneath one of the posters for gifts. Please leave items unwrapped and include a gift receipt if you purchase clothing. Downing Hall is unlocked during the day, so students who do not live in Downing can still access the posters. If you would like to donate money, you may do so either at the front desk in Downing or at Starkweather Hall.

As an added incentive, the joint staffs of the Honors College, the McNair Scholars Program, and the General Education Program will provide a dollar to dollar match for up to the first $300.00 donated.

All donations must be received by 5:00 pm on December 10, 2008.

Service and Upcoming events!

Here is a chance to help out people in need this holiday season, as well as some upcoming Honors excursion events! Please contact Alexis Kielb, the Honors Graduate Assistant, with any questions you might have!!

Service Project: The Honors College has adopted 2 families through SOS Community Services for the holidays. We are responsible for providing gifts for a 2-year-old girl, a 15-year-old boy, and each of their mothers. There will be a board in the lounge at Downing Hall listing the individual items that these individuals have requested, as well as a place to donate money (these will be in place early next week). We will also be accepting monetary donations at Starkweather Hall. In order to avoid purchasing duplicate items, we ask that you have any purchases pre-approved by me or by a designated person at Downing (to be announced). There will be forms available for you to fill out with the item, whom it is for, and who has approved it. These forms are how I will track who has participated so that I can tell SOS. If you are providing money instead of a gift, please take the time to fill a form out so that we can acknowledge your support. If you decide to purchase clothing, please get a gift receipt in case it doesn’t fit. Also, the items need to be unwrapped.

I know that many students are on tight budgets, but any support you can provide is appreciated. If every member of the Honors College donated $1.00, we would be able to buy all the requested gifts and more for each family. One of the goals of the Honors College is to foster a sense of community both among our students and among the community at large. This is an opportunity for you to work together to help families in the local Ypsilanti area.

If you are interested in organizing a fundraising event, please let me know and I will arrange for you to receive community service hours.

Excursion 1: I have reserved tickets for the Rubberbanddance Group performance on Sunday, January 11, 2009 at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $20.00 (I tried to get a combination of the best seats for the most reasonable price). If you plan on attending, you will need to bring a $10.00 deposit to the Honors College by December 10, 2008. I will arrange for carpooling from EMU to the Power Center in Ann Arbor. If you are willing to drive, please let me know how many other people you could take (parking is free on Sundays). Excursion 2: Several students have indicated to me that they would like to attend a play at Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea. On Saturday, February 14, 2009, “A Streetcar Named Desire” is being performed at 3:00 pm. Ticket prices will depend on how many people attend. Purple Rose needs an estimate of the number of people coming by mid-December. If you are interested in attending, please e-mail me, along with the amount you are able/are willing to pay for a ticket.

Scholarship Money Awaits You!!

Just wanted to bring to your attention a new scholarship program. This scholarship is open beyond the Honors College, but we wanted to bring it to your attention. The scholarships are offered as part of the DUETSs program, which aims to bring talented secondary education students who are concentrating in the areas of Science, Math, and Technology into high-need urban classrooms. Upcoming week in the Honors College

We have a lot of events next week in the Honors College. First, we have Senior Thesis Workshops. There are two sessions being held next week-one on Wednesday, October 15th at 3pm and the second will be held on Thursday, October 16th, at 11am. Both workshops will be in Starkweather and will last about one hour. If you're planning on earning Departmental Honors, and are beginning to think about working on your thesis; or, you've started work on your thesis and have not yet attended a Senior Thesis Workshop, we strongly encourage you to come. We'll be able to provide you with some guidelines and helpful information, as well as answer questions you might have about the thesis process. We look forward to seeing you there!

We will also be hosting a Study Abroad Event, held in Starkweather, on Thursday October 16th, from 7:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Representatives from the Honors College and from the Study Abroad office will be there to provide any interested Honors student with information about doing Study Abroad. Additionally, Dr. Ron Delph, from the History Department, will be there to talk about the "Power, Place & Image in Florence and Rome" program --a very popular Study Abroad option offered over winter break.

We will also be offering Honors students two fabulous incentives to come and learn more about Study Abroad--two FREE passport photos and passport applications for all who attend AND a $50 travel grant to the first TEN students who come to the event and complete a Study Abroad program.

Come and learn more about what Study Abroad has to offer you while enjoying some free snacks!!
