I love books about magic, books that are set in a fantasy world that we can only dream about.

One day twelve-year-old Tirissa discovers that everyone in her village is under a spell. Everyone but her! Then she sees a mysterious stranger change into a huge bird, a bird with a beak like a sword. Did he cast the spell? Desperate to find someone who can break it, she flees, leaving her village behind. An old herbwoman tells her to seek help from a wizard who lives far away, and her journey takes her across the Three Kingdoms. Along the way she's joined by a kindly troll and a short, fat palace guard. They are pursued by the twin princes of Kellayne, the best hunters in the Blue River Kingdom, as well as by the huge, dangerous bird. Meanwhile, an evil wizard watches Tirissa and her friends in his magic mirror and plans a second spell that will kill everyone in the Three Kingdoms.

About Willow
I grew up in Albuquerque, NM, in the late 1940’s and 1950’s, always with my nose in an Oz book or else out under the peach tree in the back yard, looking for fairies. After I grew up, moved to CA, and graduated from Occidental College, a few aptitude tests suggested I should be a novelist, but I didn’t try my hand at it until my thirties. By then I’d forgotten my childhood love of fantasy and over the years tried my hand at a variety of genres. None of the stories really captured my imagination and each time my interest petered out. But the years passed and one day, in my fifties, I felt a yearning to read Lord of the Rings, which I had never read. Halfway through, I knew that all along it was children’s fantasy I wanted to write. And so I began writing the tale of Tirissa, who loved to be out under the trees, and it turned into Tirissa and the Necklace of Nulidor.

I found Tirissa and the Necklace of Nulidor to be a really fun read. Tirissa from the village of Oakenwood, is a young 12 year old girl. She becomes the only one around with true life in her eyes. Tirissa believes the bird known as “the Beak”, cast a spell on everyone. She knows she must find help for the village. Her first stop after leaving Oakenwood, leads her to being captured by a troll named Oglo. Oglo ends up becoming a very important friend to her throughout the story. She finds out she must travel to the palace.

Willow creates a wonderful fantasy world. You will enjoy traveling along with Tirissa and other creatures she meets along the way. This is a great introduction to fantasy novels for young kids, and it is an enjoyable read for adults that enjoy Young Adult fiction. You get a bit of everything in Willow's world ~ wood nymphs, trolls, witches, wizards, palace guards, princes and more.

I had my first daughter at 19, so I found myself not relating with my friends anymore. The women I did relate to were usually quite a bit older then me, and we were never able to form a good friendship. I have a small family as well, so I only had a small handful of women influences all my life. How I wish I had the book Girl Talk: Celebrities and Other Extraordinary Women Share Their Secrets from Five Star Publication years ago!

Something special happens when women get together and talk - confidences are shared, help and support given, all in the name of sisterhood and friendship. Women are compassionate listeners, knowing intuitively when to offer advice or merely a shoulder to lean on. Gigi Garner captured these intimate moments and compiled them with permission into a book for all women. Contributors include such stars as Naomi Judd, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Shari Belafonte, as well as other women, from a prison warden to an elementary school teacher. Beauty and health tips to advice on careers and relationships, this book covers them all.
WHAT IS THIS BOOK ABOUT?

Women are compassionate listeners, knowing intuitively when to offer advice or merely a hug and a shoulder to lean on. Author Gigi Garner has captured dozens of these intimate moments between women in her new book Girl Talk. Contributors include such stars as Naomi Judd, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Shari Belafonte, as well as other women with a wide variety of careers and perspectives. Girl Talk offers the feminine perspective and tips on beauty, health, fashion, careers, relationships, and more.

WHAT MAKES THIS BOOK UNIQUE?

Gigi Garner, daughter of famed television and movie actor James Garner, has called on many of her Hollywood friends to be contributors to Girl Talk.

The author has gathered advice and tips from other accomplished women who live far beyond the spotlights of Hollywood. Contributors include women with such diverse careers as bank officers, company presidents, prison wardens, professional anglers, and school teachers.

There is something special that happens when women get together in the name of sisterhood and friendship. Girl Talk is a window into that special world.

I have had such a blast reading this book. All of the little tidbits of new information. Some things I already do and I found myself saying "Hey, I do that too!". Of course the part on the Secret Dish is a must read for anyone with kids that don't like their veggies.

This is a really fun book to read. It is an easy read, you can pick it up when you have a few minutes and get through a story. Girl Talk is one of those books you can pass around with your friends. They will all enjoy it and you will have even more to talk about. It would be a great reading club book as well if you are looking for low key read, especially during the holidays. Speaking of holidays, this would be a great book to pick up as gifts for the hard to buy woman!

I did this review with Mama Buzz. I was sent a free copy of Girl Talk from Five Star Publications. I was not paid for this review or my opinions.

My daughter enjoys reading, but mainly at school. She isn't big on reading at home, until lately that is. When I handed her Dracula's Tomb to she was instantly hooked on this book. It honestly surprised me a bit because she is funny about scaryish type things.

First she read it from cover to cover then she started playing with the book. At the very end, there is a pop up of Dracula. Once she finished the book, she started looking through all the illustrations and making up her own stories. She even played dentist with the pop-up Dracula because he was eating to much sugar blood. I loved watching her imagination going wild while reading a book! I can't recommend this Halloween book enough. It is great for boys and girls, during Halloween or not. Excellent book, one of my favorites in awhile for children.

After I gave Cami Dracula's Tomb, she has been carrying it all around the house playing with it.

I was sent Dracula's Tomb to read and possibly review. Opinions are mine.

This book is actually more of a personal account of Scott Gale (a parent), who has lived through the experience of balancing work, marriage, kids, and has succeeded. Your Family Constitution has step by step suggestions to help you do the same thing.

I've had this book for over a month now. It has really helped me to organize my approach to my kids behavior. We are slowly working our way through the techniques, and we are already experiencing positives from this book.

Another great thing about Your Family Constitution is the website. It is full of informative information, and fun things to do. They even include a free resource area with ebooks, links, family homework and charts & downloads to help you on your journey.

Are you ready to get started on the road to clarity, consistency and whole-hearted commitment to get better? Begin by downloading Your Family Constitution’s first E-book.
Learn about the most common problems parents contend with in a world that moves at a frantic pace, as well as the few simple ways to end the chaos.
 <p=align="right"></p=align="right">

RIP IV Challenge

Carl from Stainless Steel Droppings is again hosting the Readers Imbibing Peril (RIP IV). This will be my third year (2007, 2008) playing along, and this is my favorite book challenge each year!
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.

The desire for the thrill that comes with this kind of reading drifts in on the autumn winds. You breathe it in and it takes hold of you, tempting you to late nights, book-in-hand, turning pages and starting at every unknown noise. Something wicked this way comes…

I'm again going to be participating in the Peril the First:

Read Four books of any length, from any subgenre of scary stories that you choose.

I might actually add the Short Story Peril as well:

From Stainless Steel Droppings ~ More than any other time of the year, R.I.P. season brings out my desire to explore the short story genre. We will again do Short Story Sundays, for those of you who read R.I.P. related short stories any time during the week and want to write about them. I know I have Lovecraft, Poe, and Angela Carter waiting in the wings for my short story reading.

I'm really excited about this challenge starting up again. I look forward to it every year. These are actually the kind of books I normally read, but when the challenge is going, I find so many new authors and books, I never knew about.

I haven't had a chance to start my TBR yet for this challenge. Anyone feel like the fall snuck up on them? Once I get my kiddos to school next week, I will have more time to think about reading selection and I will update here as I decide.

A suspense-thriller about a nightmare scenario-a countdown to a Mumbai-style attack on U.S. soil, where the FBI, the Israeli Mossad, the US-based Iranian clandestine terror network, and the Islamic Jihad fraternity, all engaged in a timeless conflict, which plays out to a crescendo that comes to a head before the dramatic conclusion. The story offers an ample dose of realism, a cast of intense characters who engage in love, lust, and violence. It portrays the Jihad culture with its rationale and the volcano that breeds an irrational obsession with death. Moreover, it builds on the Jihadists' motivation for targeting so many innocents and exploiting the victims' massacre as a stepping-stone to their dream of eternal paradise next to Allah's throne. The real question is not whether Jihad terrorists' plots will ever cease to emerge-there is no chance of that. The question the book seeks to answer is, will the next one be stopped before it's too late?

This is a write up from the publisher of the book 72 Virgins by Avi Perry. Perry was born in Israel, and he served in the IDF as a member/commander/accordion player of "Lahakt Pikud Zafon" (Northern Command Group) during his regular military service in the early 60s. He later studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and after serving in the Six-Day War as a military field intelligence and communications specialist, he went on to study for his Ph.D. in the US, where he currently resides.

My Thoughts ~ This book starts out with instant action. It draws you in at the very first paragraph. Not only is 72 Virgins a gripping fictional thriller, but it is also a very frightening book. It is a very real book. 72 Virgin is one of those books that isn't real, but borders so close to "real" that it is scary. With Perry's background, this book helps you to identify with the Jihad culture in a way that most of us never have before.

In writing this review, I have been reading Avi Perry's blog. I wanted to include a snippet from his blog here ~

I lived and breathed war violence, military intelligence, spy-craft designed for terror deterrence. I understand wars, military conflicts, and faith-based hate—an Islamic trait, since I grew up in that kind of a hostile neighborhood. I have been frustrated by the naiveté of my American friends and colleagues who keep asking, whenever I take a trip to my birthplace, “aren’t you worried? Isn’t it dangerous over there?

I keep thinking to myself. “Aren’t you worried as well?” Did you forget 9/11? Did you forget the following terror and potential terror attacks on US and Western interests all over and around the world?America needs a constant reminder. Americans must be more alert and more aware. The economy is important. The healthcare system must be fixed. But security should not be sacrificed in the process. Without security - freedom, the economy and healthcare are meaningless. And if you don’t get it, try living in Afghanistan for a week.

I think this is one of those books that you just have to read. There is strong writing, great story from an experienced man. It is a great way to open your eyes, think of things differently but in a fictional sense. That is part of the joys of reading for me. When I can learn something while enjoying a good book.

You can purchase 72 Virgins at Amazon, it retails for $19.99. You can learn a bit about Islam at Perry's website, he has videos, pdf files and power point presentation.

Avi Perry is also a musician. He played professionally to finance college, and now continues to play as a hobby at home. He has some Christmas jazz on his website if you are interested.

I would like to thank Avi Perry for sending me a copy of his book to review. To note, I was not paid for my review in any way. My opinions are mine.

My favorite part of the book? The illustrations. They are just beautifully done, just a bit creepy in the good old Halloween fashion, but not too scary that kids will not enjoy.

Little Baby Mummy wants just one more game of hide-and-shriek with Big Mama Mummy before bedtime. The night is deep and dark, full of friendly creatures that click their clacky teeth and whoosh past on flippy-floppy wings. But who will comfort Little Baby Mummy if a small, scritchy-scratchy someone gives him a scare? Big Mama Mummy, of course! Fresh, comical illustrations complement this everso- slightly suspenseful story with a satisfying ending.

I got an email from Basil Spice about author Randall Radic and his book Gone to Hell: True Crimes of America's Clergy. Never one to turn down a good story about priests going bad, I replied that I'd review it. Unfortunately it was already gone, but then I was offered a chance to review A Priest in Hell: Gangs, Murderers and Snitching in a California Jail. I figured, why not and was sent the book.

Randall Radic is a former priest in the Old Catholic Church, a convicted felon who was sentenced to 16 months in prison. He was arrested and charged with 10 felonies after a large bank deposit attracts the attention of the authorities. After an investigation, his congregation learns that he mortgaged the parish house, took the money, and then sold off the church itself. Convicted of embezzlement, forgery, and fraud, he spends six months in prison before a plea bargain leads to his release.

This book is basically a gritty memoir that describes the painful reality of crime and punishment in a California jail. Randall at age 54 (which is older then the general population) soon dis covers that his background as a priest makes him both a target and a confidant within the prison walls. As he writes about his own anger and contrition, he also introduces the stories of several of his fellow inmates, detailing their struggles and presenting a frighteningly real and powerful sense of the tastes, smells, sounds, and indignities of jail life.

I have to be be honest, I dislike Radic very much. He seems like an arrogant jerk that does not care one bit about other human beings, nor having any morals. Look at what he has done, he fed off the people that thought they were helping God. He is greedy, egotistical and with no remorse.

Not only that, to get a lighter sentence, he rats out his fellow inmates. He has not one drop of ethics what so ever, no respect for his fellow humankind. Now he is writing books about his "experience". He created this experience by stealing from innocent people, ugh!!!

Anyways, onto the book. I will admit, I did get into the book in the beginning. You want to find out what happens next, etc. Some parts start to get boring in the middle. It is an interesting read into the prison system, especially if you like true crime.

My mom then gave me Magic Kingdom for Sale--Sold! (The Magic Kingdom of Landover) and I was hooked. No more Babysitter's Club or Sweet Valley High for me! I read quickly through the entire series of 5 books. Then I waited and waited and waited for another. Brooks rights a lot of books, but he never went back to my beloved Landover. Every so often, I check his website to see if he has any updates. I never got into his other series, I ended up going in the direction of Mystery/Thriller/Suspense with only a few sci-fi/fantasy books hitting my book shelves.

Then the other day, I stopped in Barnes and Noble to use the internet while Allie was at dance class. Her new dance studio does not offer wi-fi like her old one. The reason I bought a netbook was to use it while the girls were at dance. Luckily Barnes and Noble isn't that far away. When I first went there, I decided to look around first. I hardly ever go into book stores, but I realized the other day it is a great way to find new books to read. I happened to notice The Magic Kingdom of Landover Volume 1. At first I thought it was new, then realized it was the first 3 books of the series. A bit disappointed, I was still admiring the cover. Then I realized it said from the author of A Princess of Landover. What?? I hurried over to the sci-fi section and sure enough, there it was. Of course on the very top shelf, so I couldn't even look at it. I hurried over to the Starbucks area and requested it from my library. I will wait to buy the paperback version because that is what my other 5 books are. I'm so excited, I can't wait for it to come in! I'm trying not to build it up to much, I don't want to be disappointed, just want to enjoy it. I read the first one about a year ago again, now I have to pull out the rest so I'm ready for it.

A Princess of Landover ~

After fourteen years, New York Times bestselling fantasy master Terry Brooks has returned to the magic kingdom of Landover. The remarkable realm of dragons, demons, wizards, and wonders that wove an irresistible spell in five classic novels throws open its gates at long last for a brand-new adventure featuring a dazzling cast of characters and creatures.

Ben Holiday, Chicago lawyer and mere mortal turned monarch of enchanted Landover, has grappled with scheming barons, fire-breathing beasts, diabolical conjurers, and extremely wicked witches. None of whom have prepared him for the most daunting of challengers–a teenage daughter. Sent by Ben and his beloved sylph bride, Willow, to an exclusive girls’ prep school, headstrong (and half-magical) Mistaya Holiday has found life in the natural world a less than perfect fit. And when her latest rebellious antics get her indefinitely suspended, she’s determined to resume her real education–learning sorcery from court wizard Questor Thews–whether her parents like it or not.

But back home in Landover, Mistaya’s frustrated father is just as determined that the precocious princess learn some responsibility, and he declares her grounded until she successfully refurbishes the long-forsaken royal library. Mortified by the prospect of salvaging a king’s ransom in moldy books–and horrified by word that repulsive local nobleman Lord Laphroig seeks to marry her–Mistaya decides that the only way to run her own life is to run away from home.

So begins an eventful odyssey peppered with a formidable dragon, recalcitrant gnomes, an inscrutable magic cat, a handsome librarian, a sinister sorcerer, and more than a few narrow escapes as fate draws Landover’s intrepid princess to the last place she expected to go, and into the thick of a mystery that will put her mettle to the test–and might bring the kingdom to its knees.

I am missing some books I have read over the summer. I'm getting annoyed with myself. I'm going to try and post a round up of books read each month, starting with September

I ended up reading a ton of James Patterson ~ I read Dangerous Days of Daniel X and I'm about half way through the 2nd book in this series ~ Watch the Skies. I also started Alex Cross's Trial, but didnt' finish that as well. I did finish The 8th Confession though and loved it!

I also read Memoirs of Fortune Teller and Down the Rabbit Hold that I really enjoyed.

My 7th grader has to read for 20 minutes a day in her lexile reading group. She hates to read, but read some books she enjoyed this month

Diary of a Wimpy Kid ~ I picked up the third one at a garage sale or something. She absolutely loved it and wants to read the first two books.

Geek Chic - Zoe Zone or something like that

Middle School is Worse then Meatballs

A Preface to Trial By Alex Cross
A few months after I hunted a vicious killer named the Tiger halfway around the world, I began to think seriously about a book I had been wanting to write for years. I even had the title for it: Trial. The previous book I'd written was about the role of forensic psychology in the capture of the serial killer gary Soneji. Trial would be very different, and in some ways even more terrifying.
Oral history is very much alive in the Cross family, and this is because of my grandmother, regina Cross, who is known in our household and our neighborhood as Nana Mama. Nana's famous stories cover the five decades when she was a teacher in Washington—the difficulties she faced during those years of civil rights turmoil, but also countless tales passed on from times before she was alive.
One of these stories—and it is the one that stayed with me the most—involved an uncle of hers who was born and lived most of his life in the small town of eudora, Mississippi. This man, Abraham Cross, was one of the finest baseball players of that era and once played for the Philadelphia Pythians. Abraham was grandfather to my cousin Moody, who was one of the most unforgettable and best-loved characters in our family history.
What I now feel compelled to write about took place in Mississippi during the time that Theodore roosevelt was president, the early part of the twentieth century. I believe it is a story that helps illuminate why so many black people are angry, hurt, and lost in this country, even today. I also think it is important to keep this story alive for my family, and hopefully for yours.
The main character is a man my grandmother knew here in Washington, a smart and courageous lawyer named Ben Corbett. it is our good fortune that Corbett kept first-person journals of his incredible experiences, including a trial that took place in eudora. A few years before he died, Mr. Corbett gave those journals to Moody. eventually they wound up in my grandmother's hands. My suspicion is that what happened in Mississippi was too personal and painful for Corbett to turn into a book. But I have come to believe that there has never been a better time for this story to be told.

Trial by James Patterson is a lot like his other books, you get the famous short chapters that I love! I will be honest though, I have really struggled with this book. Not because of the writing, but the subject matter. It was very sad to read. I prefer books that make me forget my problems. Granted, black issues aren't my problem but it is a very sad time in our history. If you enjoy reading this type of subject matter, then it is a great book. If you are reading it only for Alex Cross then you can pass it. If you are a huge fan though, you will probably enjoy reading about a past Cross family member!

The Women's Murder Club is actually what got me hooked on Patterson. I love this series and The 8th Confession did not disappoint me. I haven't read any other reviews, so I don't know what others thought. I really enjoyed this book though. I thought it had a great story line, I love the character development, I loved the ending. I wish the tv show would have lasted longer, even though I prefer the book characters to the tv show characters.

Det. Lindsay Boxer, of the San Francisco police department, is searching for a killer who's knocking off the well-to-do without leaving any signs of violence on the bodies. The investigation is going nowhere until the department's repository of institutional memory recalls a series of unsolved killings from 1982 ...

I will be anxiously awaiting the 9th Women's Murder Club book from Patterson!

I think is an important book to read through if you have children in school. Even if they are in pre-school, even if you don't think they are having anxiety. At some point, over the course of the 12+ years of school, your child will most likely experience anxiety over something. This book is a great resource of knowledge on ways of tackling this!

Every year, more than 68 million students of every age find themselves worrying excessively about their first day of school, even before it begins. Their hearts race, their stomachs turn, and their palms sweat just thinking about getting on the school bus for the first time, that first pop quiz, or that notoriously strict teacher. For parents of these children, nothing can be more upsetting than dropping their kids off on the first day of school, wondering how they will cope. Now, they can stop worrying and start helping. As a seasoned psychotherapist, Diane Peters Mayer has successfully treated hundreds of elementary school students suffering from this common disorder. In Overcoming School Anxiety, she shows parents how to deal with a wide variety of problems, from test and homework anxiety, to bullying, and fear of speaking up in class. Mayer also offers easy-to-learn techniques for children including breathing and relaxation exercises, focusing techniques, and tips on proper diet and exercise that help relieve stress. Filled with real-life examples as well as proven advice for working with teachers, principals, and counselors, this is the only comprehensive guide that will enable every parent to help a child cope, build confidence, and succeed in school.

Overcoming School Anxiety: How to Help Your Child Deal With Separation, Tests, Homework, Bullies, Math Phobia, and Other Worries is a very easy to read book. For one thing, this is not the kind of book you have to read from cover to cover. You can check out the table of contents, flip to the section you need help in. Now of course, I'd recommend when you have the time to read the book from front to back, it is great to have the knowledge to handle this.

When I was first asked to review this book, I was really excited about it. I actually wished I had had it about 4 years ago, maybe even longer. My oldest, currently in 7th grade always struggled with academics. Especially reading, which led to test taking issues as well. 4 years ago though, she started getting bullied by a group of boys. It caused major anxiety for her. It wasn't a typical bullying if you think about it. It wasn't some nasty girls being mean to her. She dealth with that kind of stuff, no problem. She had a group of boys, that were bigger then pick on her for 3 straight years. It was awful! I think we handled it well, she ended up being a stronger person for it. She also, luckily has extremely high self esteem. However, we did go through a good 2 years of her throwing up at least 3 times a week, and her begging not to school. The last year of the bullying, wasn't as bad thankfully. The school had been working on taking actions over the years, and we finally had some solutions by 5th grade. For 6th grade, they were able to get the ring leader into a special school for troubled kids. Once he was out of the picture, the other kids don't bother her any more, so 6th grade was one of the first years without major anxiety.

Now my 3rd grader is very shy. I'm starting to see that we might be having issues with anxiety. I'm hoping it doesn't happen, but I'm keeping an eye on things to help her out if it does.

Right before the first chapter starts, there is a page that tells you how to use the book. The author recommends, reading through the table of contents first, get to know what is inside the book. Then zero in on your childs problem and read that specific chapter.

It is also recommended to keep a Overcoming School Anxiety Journal to keep track of the steps you take. One thing I really love is that she mentions you can show your child their progress. Such a great tool to have!

I really love this book. Like I said, if you have kids in school, think about reading this book. You can of course buy it Amazon, but if it isn't something you want to purchase, check it out from the library. A lot of times, books like this I can get for free from the library. If I just really love the book and think it will be a valuable resource over years, then I pick it up from Amazon.

is a resource book for citizens seeking to understand, use, and defend their right to know their rights under the freedom of information laws in the United States.

It sets out in plain language freedom-of-information best practices for ordinary citizens, activist organizations, journalists, bloggers, and lawyers. It educes practical lessons from dozens of case studies of how the reader can use our freedom of information laws in order to protect the environment, public health and safety and to expose governmental and corporate crime, waste, and corruption. Finally, it shows American readers how their right to know is being progressively curtailed, why the trend is so dangerous to American democracy, and what they can do to help reverse the alarming trend.

Freedom of information is the bedrock of democracy and a leitmotif of the history of American democracy. Freedom of information laws were first passed in Sweden (1766) and the United States (1966). Over the course of the past decade, scores of democracies around the world have followed suit by enacting national legislation enshrining their citizens' right of access to government information. Yet, since even before 9/11, the United States has been going in the opposite direction, as the federal government has aggressively expanded exemptions from the protections of public access to government information guaranteed by the Freedom of Information Act of 1966 and the post-Watergate sunshine laws.

My thoughts ~ This is such an important book for us Americans to read. Knowledge is power, that is something I will always stand by. Jacqueline Klosek gives us information we should have in an easy to read format that is also enjoyable. If you live in the Unites States, you should read through this book! You can read her guest post on my blog here.

Rochester, NH, Jan 22, 2009 - Author Gary Turcotte in his book, Memoirs of a Fortune Teller, crafts a tale of a fortune teller who uncovers the secrets of a serial killer.

This book is a journal of the most disturbing readings of a traveling fortune teller. A carnival set-up man and his girlfriend are entertained daily as they watch Mary Ann the fortune teller work on the most resistant customers. They watch her turn the skeptics into believers. They see that she is truly gifted at seeing the future as well as the past.

By chance she uncovers the truth about the carnie couple. He is a traveling serial killer

and as the fair enters the new season the locals are asking the fortune teller to help find a

missing child. Mary Ann is an older woman and is afraid to be involved. She realizes that

many of the local people's reading are entwined.

Soon the killer is convinced that Mary Ann knows too much. Mary Ann doesn't want to

be the next one missing. Mary Ann is 68 years old and she knows that she is no match for

a young psychopathic merciless killer.

About the book:

Memoirs of a Fortune Teller by Gary Turcotte

ISBN: 978-1432733421

Publisher: Outskirts Press

Date of publish: Oct 2008

Pages: 131

S.R.P.: $13.95

About the author:

Gary Turcotte grew up in Dover, New Hampshire, and has earned his living as a General

Contractor. He has written five books. This is the fourth published. There is a sequel to

this book titled Vigilante Witch Hunter.

I was sent this book several months ago. It went on my review shelf, and to be honest it got overlooked. I tend to read my library books first, so the books I own never get read. About a month ago, I finished up my library books and stopped requesting new ones. I just have to get through the some of the books I own and a ton of review books.

A couple days ago, we were reformatting my C drive, so I couldn't get online. I've been trying to read the new Patterson, Trial but have really been struggling with the content. I happened to look over and noticed Memoirs of a Fortune Teller. It has a cool cover, is on the thin side, and I figured would make a great book to read in between trying to read Trial.

I have to admit, when I started reading the book, I got really into. I couldn't figure out why I waited so long to read it. I really enjoyed the writings of the character Mary Ann. The story is basically her journal, which I found interesting. I quickly read through the entire book, and I can't wait to read the second book told by her daughter ~ Vigilante Witch Hunter.

I was looking at the reviews on Amazon, they seem to be mixed. Mainly people wish it was edited a bit better and more details. I personally didn't really notice anything. I just got into the story and enjoyed a fun book about fortune telling.

This book also would qualify for the RIP IV challenge! It is a fun read around Halloween time, check it out! Let me know if you have read it or if you do, I'd love to hear your thoughts!
- Jacqueline Klosek

As politicians and the public at large continue to debate the future regulation of the US healthcare system, there is one thing that is for certain – we, the people have the right to more information about how this future is being determined. We need to know more about the agencies and officials who are involved with decisions about health care. We need to know with whom they make and from whom they take advice. We need access to White House visitor logs and full disclosure of information about the meetings that our leaders have had with health care executives and others who may have commercial interests in the future regulation of US healthcare.

Access to information held by the government is an essential and fundamental part of democracy. Our right to information is enshrined in the federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and equivalent state laws. However, this right is not always easily exercised. Oftentimes, people seeking information from government agencies under the FOIA will face obstacles such as delays and denials. Other times, information that is supposed to be posted online or otherwise communicated to the public will not be made available.

President Obama ran on a campaign of transparency and open government, assuring us that we would have access to more information than we had under the prior administration. While there have been a number of significant accomplishments in this regard, there have also been disappointments and setbacks. In the current debate over healthcare regulation, many would agree that the public has not been afforded enough information.

It is thus an opportune time to reacquaint ourselves with the rights we have under FOIA and similar legislation. In my recent publication, The Right to Know, I provide an overview of the FOIA and offer tips and suggestions on how journalists, activists and citizens can use these laws to obtain information held by the government. To show the important role that the FOIA has played, I also provide examples of case were the FOIA was instrumental in achieving significant revelations in key areas including environmental protection, human health and safety, civil rights, human rights, government corruption and crime. If we continue to exercise our right to know and to push for more information and transparency, we are likely to find ourselves with a government that is more accountable and effective. As President Lincoln wisely advised back in 1861, "Let the people know the facts, and the country will be safe."

However, this does not mean that prices increased every year in that period and by the same percentage in all locations within the country. For instance, between 1990 and 1995, inflation-adjusted prices of homes in the United States declined by 1.1 percent. If any individual purchased a house for residence or investment in that period and sold it before the market recovered, he or she may have realized a capital loss on that property because prices declined.

Moreover, the claim that real estate has always gone up in value, and thus it will continue to do so is a generalization that may not necessarily apply to specific localities. Real estate markets are local markets, in which any market’s stability and growth are affected by location-specific factors that influence supply and demand and therefore home values. Consider, for instance, the recent spurt in foreclosures, which has had a disproportionately heavy toll on real estate markets in, say, California and Nevada. An increased supply of distressed properties in those markets lead to large drops in home prices. However, foreclosure activity within each state may be concentrated in specific local communities, such as the Silicon Valley in California, which has seen a surge in unemployment.

Furthermore, there are over 1,200 Census Block Groups or hyper local markets in Silicon Valley. Income ranges from under $20,000 to over $400,000, prices range from under $100,000 to over $2,000,000, and the number of Short Sales ranges from near zero, to over 20% for some Census Block Groups. In addition, the medians are not correlated to the ranges, and the medians have changed over 8% since the yearly data was published by the free vendors that many sources quote.

Thus, any such local markets, including that in the Silicon Valley, CA, may have seen larger declines in home values than the state of California as a whole. Besides, these precipitous declines in California or Nevada may be taking place against home price increases in other parts of the United States. One example is Cambridge, MA, which recorded a 16 per cent annual increase in prices last year.

The Home Value Predictor™ ™ integrates various local market data into a model that forecasts price movements down to the level of a particular local community. Its broad and block-level market forecasts thus help avoid making investment decisions based on generalizations about real estate prices for the nation as a whole or for any particular local market.

Eddie Godshalk author of “The Missing Keys to Thriving in Any Real Estate Market” reveals the information that was missing, that caused the housing and financial crisis. There are over 350,000 markets in the US. Have you ever wondered where to find current local information?

The current housing crisis is caused by a lack of quality relevant local information and a lack of due diligence on loans and loan packages (MBS). Can the sub-prime housing market crash occur again in your town? Noted Real Estate author, analyst and lecturer Eddie Godshalk, fore-warns that the answer is yes, because the loan approval process is currently encapsulated with only a few profiles of three to six month old data. There is no consolidation of local meaningful data to mitigate risk. “To conduct meaningful real estate due diligence, you need to know how one block compares to another block and the surrounding blocks and use updated current information,” states Eddie Godshalk, Author of The Missing Keys to Thriving in Any Real Estate Market and CEO of Silicon Valley, based Value Predictor, LLC.

<p=align="right"></p=align="right">

How to Create a Great Work Area for Inspiration

Today we have a guest post from the fabulous author Sheryl Keen. Her first book is Journal According To John.

Different people find different sources of inspiration. The same might be true for writers but the one thing that is true for all scribes is we all love great books. What better way to create a great work area that inspires us than to surround ourselves with some of our favorite books? When we are lost for words or need that extra push we can simply turn our heads, look on our book shelves and aspire to greatness.

While writers can be inspired by words, there are other creative works that can give us motivation. I am inspired by abstract pieces of art work. There is just something about color, shape, shades, tone and the story that is going on with paint that stimulates my thoughts and assists me to write my own story. Maybe all writers should get pieces of art works that make them think and help them to find form out of the intangible swirl that can be an author’s head.

But for something more tangible, writers who have won any awards or received a special letter, can frame them and placed them on their walls. In the times when writers are not feeling so motivated, the awards can be a reminder of past achievements and future possibilities. The awards on the wall can also remind us of the work that we have put in before and prompt us to see that we have to write to become inspired and not visa versa.

Personally, I like complete silence when I am writing but I know that other writers like a little music in the background. Whatever works! I can understand how a little Beethoven or Bach as the backdrop to a masterpiece can work. These musicians were masters themselves who made inspiring music. Music has that power to touch us and to make us reach for things far greater than ourselves. Ambiance is important to any occasion and writing is no different.

One of the things that give a room personality is the color of the walls. Some of us are conservative and others are a little more liberal. For those who are more of the latter, a color other than white or off white might be very stimulating. A nice earth tone can serve as a centre and a reconnecting force in the pursuits of writing the best piece of work that we possibly can.

In the end, we need to be comfortable when writing. An inspirational work area should have a comfortable chair, a sturdy, spacious desk and of course an up to date computer. Perhaps these are the most important things because nothing robs us of motivation and distract us from the job of writing than being ill equipped. Writers write and we need only some basic tools to get this done. Everything else is accessories. So in the final analysis, and with all the trimmings, maybe inspiration really comes down to simple things.

<p=align="right"></p=align="right">

Review ~ Face of Betrayal by Lis Wiehl & April Henry

When I signed up to review books with Thomas Nelson to review books, I quickly chose Face of Betrayal (A Triple Threat Novel) by Lis Weihl to read.

Written by FOX News correspondent Lis Wiehl and veteran mystery novelist April Henry, Face of Betrayal is the story of three fiercely smart and devoted justice-seeking women who investigate the disappearance of a Senate page connected to a philandering politician.
While home on Christmas holiday, a 17-year-old Senate page takes her dog out for a walk and never returns. Reporter Cassidy Shaw is the first to break the story. The media firestorm that ensues quickly ensnares Federal Prosecutor Allison Pierce and FBI Special Agent Nicole Hedge… who just happen to be Cassidy’s best friends. It appears the young page was romantically involved with a senator–a senator now under suspicion for her disappearance.

As time begins to run out for the missing girl, Allison, Cassidy and Nicole fight to locate her before it’s too late, even while each fights her own personal battles–a stalker, single motherhood and an abusive relationship.

I have noticed that I prefer mystery/suspense books, and I also tend to prefer women authors. No real reason, I guess I just relate better. Face of Betrayal didn't disappoint at all, despite Wiehl working for Fox News, lol.

The story reminded me a bit of Patterson's Womens Murder Club. The three friends that work on solving disappearance call themselves triple threat. I really enjoyed the character development and plot of Face of Betrayal. It was a fast paced, page turner that kept me guessing. I can't wait to read the second book in the series!

<p=align="right"></p=align="right">

Journal according to John by Sheryl Keen

Journal According To John ~

Following a nasty bar brawl, John, a twenty-eight-year-old man, follows a close friend’s advice and begins keeping a journal. He’s recently divorced from his wife, Debbie, and he hopes the journal will provide a tool with which to make sense of his brief, failed marriage and to determine why he is so emotionally challenged.

As a therapist specializing in behavioral issues, he knows he has to pull his own life together. If he tells people to clean up their own lives, modify their thoughts, and learn new, more appropriate behaviors, he knows that he’s got to step up and follow his own advice. Early on, he realizes that his mother, the curator of a gallery that specializes in steel art and other nontraditional works, has largely shaped his thoughts and actions. But just how much can he blame her for his current state of affairs?

Soon the words in the journal are flowing easily and quickly. When painful thoughts are no longer avoided and dreams provide fuel for his writing, the journal takes on a life of its own. Will John discover the reasons for his dysfunctional situation? Can keeping a journal help him improve his life?

Book Excerpt:

I am making my second entry in this journal. I’ve taken up this activity on the advice of Maya, my cousin and friend who thinks it will be good for me. I strove hard against the idea of catharsis and all that business of cleansing because I don’t know what good having my problems written down in hard black and white will do. If anything, this constant writing must be a continuous reminder of the kind of life I have cultivated. I also don’t know many men who write in journals, and I don’t want to be a pioneer this way. But sometimes friends win, with their constant and insistent badgering, as only they can. Maya could influence cow to buy milk; her powers of persuasion are limitless. At a time when my marriage has dissolved like Andrews Salts in water, dissolving yet fizzing all over the place, the last thing I want to be committed to is making journal entries, especially about issues that are dark and troublesome, issues I placed at the back of my mind long ago, yet which have shaped this shell of a thing I’ve called my life.

I've always kept journals and I love scrapbooking for the same reasons. I realy enjoyed reading about John, a man, doing something that usually is done by women. With Keen's book, you go along John's journey in healing his life. It is a very powerful book that is hard to put down. You go along John's journey with him and just maybe can help heel yourself as well.

Book Video Trailer: Journal According To John - Free videos are just a click away

<p=align="right"></p=align="right">
