Luke AFB is west of Phoenix and is rapidly being surrounded by civilization that complains about the noise from the base and its planes, forgetting that it was there long before they were. A certain lieutenant colonel at Luke AFB deserves a big pat on theback. Apparently, an individual who lives somewhere near Luke AFB wrote the local paper complaining about a group of F-16s that disturbed his/her day at the mall.

When that individual read the response from a Luke AFB officer, it must have stung quite a bit.

The complaint:
'Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base:

Whom do we thank for the morning air show? Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 A.M, a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine our good fortune! Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns early bird special?

Any response would be appreciated.

Regarding 'A wake-up call from Luke's jets' On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m., a perfectly timed four- ship fly by of F-16s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt. Jeremy Fresques. Capt Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day.

At 9 a.m. on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend. Based on the letter writer's recount of the fly by, and because of the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's flag on behalf of the President of theUnited States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured..

A four-ship fly by is a display of respect the Air Force gives to those who give their lives in defense offreedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects.

The letter writer asks, 'Whom do we thank for the morning airshow? The 56th Fighter Wing will make the call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.

Only 2 defining forces have ever offered to die for you....JesusChrist and the American Soldier.
One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

You will be surprised to see proof of Pharaoh's chariot and bones of horses and men found in the Red Sea ..

Confirmation of the actual Exodus route has come from divers finding coral-encrusted bones and chariot remains in the Gulf of Aqaba . ONE of the most dramatic records of Divine intervention in history is the account of the Hebrews' exodus from Egypt ..

The subseq uent drowning of the entire Egyptian army in the Red Sea was not an insignificant event, and confirmation of this event is compelling evidence that the Biblical narrative is truly authentic. Over the years, many divers have searched the Gulf of Suez in vain for artifacts to verify the Biblical account. But carefully following the Biblical and historical records of the Exodus brings you to Nuweiba, a large beach in the Gulf of Aqaba , as Ron Wyatt discovered in 1978.

Repeated dives in depths ranging from 60 to 200 feet deep (18m to 60m), over a stretch of almost 2.5 km, has shown that the chariot parts are scattered across the sea bed. Artifacts found include wheels, chariot bodies, as well as human and horse bones. Divers have located on the Saudi coastline opposite Nuweiba as well.

Since 1987, Ron Wyatt found three four-spoke gilded char iot wheels. Coral does not grow on gold hence the shape has remained very distinct, although the wood inside the gold veneer has disintegrated making them too fragile to move.

The hope for future expeditions is to explore the deeper waters with remote cameras or mini-subs.

matches chariot wheels found in Tutankhamen's tomb.

This one tested by the Department of Osteology at Stockholm University , was found to be a human femur, from the right leg of a 165-170cm tall man. It is essentially 'fossilized, ' i.e., replaced by minerals and coral, hence cannot be dated by radiocarbon methods, although this specimen was obviously from antiquity.. Chariot wheel and axle covered with coral and up-ended. Exodus 14:25 ' And took off their chariot wheels, that they drove them heavily...' Solomon's memorial pillars.

When Ron Wyatt first visited Nuweiba in 1978, he found a Phoenician style column lying in the water. Unfortunately the inscriptions had been eroded away, hence the column's importance was not understood until 1984 when a second granite column was found on the Saudi coastline opposite -- identical to the first except on this one the inscription was still intact!

In Phoenician letters (Archaic Hebrew), it contained the words: Mizraim (Egypt); Solomon; Edom ; death; Pharaoh; Moses; and Yahweh, indicating that King Solomon had set up these columns as a memorial to the miracle of the crossing of the sea. Saudi Arabia does not admit tourists, and perhaps fearing unauthorized visitors, the Saudi Authorities have since removed this column, and replaced it with a flag marker where it once stood.

How deep is the water? The Gulf of Aqaba is very deep, in places over a mile (1,600m) deep. Even with the sea dried up, walking across would be difficult due to the steep grade down the sides. But, there is one spot where if the water were removed it would be an easy descent for people and animals. This is the line between Nuweiba and the opposite shore in Saudi Arabia .

Depth-sounding expeditions have revealed a smooth, gentle slope descending from Nuweiba out into the Gulf. This shows up almost like a pathway on depth-recording equipment, confirming it's Biblical description, '...a way in the sea, and a path in the mighty waters.' (Isaiah 43:16)

The Bible writers frequently refer to the miracle of the Red Sea crossing, for it was an event which finds no equal in history. The Hebrew prophets describe the sea at the crossing site as '...the waters of the great deep...the depths of the sea...' (Isaiah 51:10)

Knowing the exact spot to which the Bible writers were referring, what is the depth there? The distance between Nuweiba and where artifacts have been found on Saudi coast is about 18km (11 miles).

Along this line, the deepest point is about 800m (2,600 feet). No wonder that inspired writers of the Bible described it as the mighty waters. And no wonder that not a single Egyptian survived when the water collapsed in upon them. (Above NUWEIBA BEACH- the spot where the crossing began)

The Pagan Origins of the Christian Easter Tradition

Easter time is for Christians one of the most Holy periods of the year, representing the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. But there are those that believe the traditions celebrated have a history that pre-dates the period of Jesus, coming instead from earlier Pagan rituals.

It is generally accepted that the name Easter, as proposed by the 8th century scholar St. Bede in his book, De Ratione Temporum, is derived from the name of the Anglo-Saxon Teutonic mother goddess of spring and fertility, Eastre.

A month corresponding to April was dedicated to her and the Anglo-Saxons held a festival in her honour on the day of the vernal equinox. During the festival, the rabbit was used as a symbol of fertility and eggs were painted with bright colours representing the sunlight of spring and often given as gifts or used in egg rolling contests.

The ancient world has many examples of festivals to bring in spring with similar themes to the Christian tradition such as the Greek legend that tells of the return of Persephone, goddess of the earth, from the underworld symbolising the resurrection of life.

Around 200 B.C. mystery cults began to appear in Rome just as they had earlier in Greece. The most noteworthy was the Cybele cult who not only worshiped Cybele but also her lover, Attis (the older Tammuz, Osiris, Dionysus, or Orpheus under a new name).

The god of ever-reviving vegetation, he was born of a virgin and he died and was reborn annually. The festival began as a day of blood on Black Friday and ended after three days with worshippers rejoicing over his resurrection.

Some other goddesses of the ancient world who had similar stories attached were;

Aphrodite from ancient Cyprus
Ashtoreth from ancient Israel
Astarté from ancient Greece
Demeter from Mycenae
Hathor from ancient Egypt
Ishtar from Assyria
Kali, from India
Ostara from Norway

However it is unlikely that the Christian festival of Easter is solely derived from the pagan rituals and probably includes a number of traditions. Christian scholars emphasis the relationship of Easter to the Jewish festival of Passover. Many early Christians were brought up in the Hebrew tradition and saw Easter as an added feature of Passover, celebrating the arrival of the Messiah, as foretold in the holy texts.

Wiccans and other modern-day Pagans continue to celebrate the Spring Equinox as one of their 8 yearly holy days. Their rituals are related primarily to fertility and to the balance of the day and night times. Where they can safely celebrate without fear of religious intolerance, they often incorporate a bonfire into their rituals, jumping over the dying embers to assure fertility of people and crops.

The World's Most Amazing Holes!

These holes are not only amazing, but some of them are truly terrifying. The sheer scale of these holes reminds us just how tiny we are.

1. Kimberley Big Hole , South Africa

Apparently the largest hand-dug excavation in the world, this 1,097-meter- deep mine yielded over three tons of diamonds before being closed in 1914.

2. Glory Hole - Monticello Dam, California

This is the "glory hole" at Monticello dam, and it is the largest spillway of its kind in the world, its size enabling it to consume 14,400 cubic feet of water every second.

3. Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah

This is supposedly the largest man-made excavation on earth. Extraction began in 1863 and still continues today, the pit increasing in size constantly. In its current state the hole is miles deep and 2.5 miles wide.

4. Great Blue Hole , Belize

This incredible geographical phenomenon known as a blue hole is situated 60 miles off the mainland of Belize .. There are numerous blue holes around the world, but none as stunning as this one.

5. Mirny Diamond Mine , Serbia

This one is an absolute beast and holds the title of largest open diamond mine in the world. At 525 meters deep, with a top diameter of 1200 meters, there's even a no-fly zone above the hole due to a few helicopters having been sucked in.

6. Diavik Mine , Canada

The mine is so huge and the area so remote that it has its own airport with a runway large enough to accommodate a Boeing 737. It is equally impressive when the surrounding water is frozen.

7. Sinkhole in Guatemala

These photos are of a sinkhole that instantaneously appeared when the soil beneath was eroded as a result of a broken water main early this year (2008) in Guatemala . The hole swallowed a dozen homes and killed at least 3 people.

8. Rat Hole, Washington , D.C. , USA

This horrific hole is capable of sucking down trillions of U.S. dollars annually. Once the money disappears within its gaping maw it is never

seen again.

In this restaurant review we're going to step away from the seafood and focus on something a little bit more flavorful! After eating seafood platter after giant seafood platter on my recent road trip to Key West who can blame me? Yes, even the worst seafood junkie needs to take a break after awhile. If anything, I did just that and more by trying Cuban food for the first time in my life and wow I picked a one of a kind place to break into this new food category!
This establishment was only found after doing extensive research of what Key West has to offer in the way of Cuban food. I know they have plenty of nice Cuban eateries on the island so this wasn't an easy task in the least. Like I said, I did my homework and it paid a delicious ten fold because I ended up at this cool little spot called El Meson De Pepe in Key West, Florida.
Finding Pepe's as we will call it for short and deciding to go there as I mentioned earlier was a choice in of itself. However, that was only half the battle as I walked through the door of this festive food experience. You see, upon walking through the door they give you a choice, do you want to sit inside or enjoy the patio outside? Patio I said, I didn't know this place had a patio but sure enough they do. After a couple of minutes of surveying the atmosphere inside which I have to say was very open and full of life, I had a decision to make. Again, not an easy one but luckily my traveling companion made the decision for me because I can be kind of indecisive especially when it comes to tough choices! We get outside, and I was very glad she made the choice she did, the outside was just as fun as the inside if not even more so. Again lots of space and with this came lots of seating, a bar (you know you need one those if you go to Key West), and big LCD TV's hanging from the covered patio. Nice! It couldn't be any better so far!
We get seated and break open the menu and see more choices than ever staring back at us. What to order in such an extensive menu that includes many many yummy sounding entrees as well as traditional Cuban sandwiches? I told myself, be logical about this, you've never tried Cuban food before, just go for the platter again and sample it all. Geez, I just can't get away from those platters can I? I said, oh well.. I'm probably not going to be able to come back here for a long time. Why not? The waiter came by and not wanting to sound like a moron I point to Completa La Tremenda. I know you're probably laughing right about now because even if you don't know the slightest amount of Spanish you probably can surmise that Completa La Tremenda is a tremendous amount of food. What do you expect from a food junkie though, my appetite is only complete when I eat a tremendous amount of food!
As it turns out though this tremendous amount of food turned out to be the final trifecta of awesome choices that I made for this food experience. To be honest with you I can't even pronounce half of what I ate which includes,Tamal En Hoja and Lechon Asado but I have to say my stomach didn't care because it was more than satisfying. The way they cooked the meat for this meal which inlcuded pork couldn't of been better. It was tasty, juicy, tender, and had all the right spices to make it melt in my mouth.
You know, walking into any restaurant for the first time you never know what to expect. However, I have to say that Pepe's as we will call it for short, went above and beyond my expectations in every sense of the word. It had plenty of festive atmosphere inside and out with an abundance of tasty Cuban treats to choose from on a more than satisfying menu! Again, a winning combo that I can't wait to go back and have to choose from again! At least though, I'll have one less choice to decide upon because I know just where I'll wind up: El Meson de Pepe's! Key West – More than Meets the Tourist

Aside from the regular tourist spots, there’s so much more to Key West than meets the eye. You just have to look for it.

Each trip, I always make sure to get up before sunrise at least one day and take a hike around old town to discover more beautiful things the city that we love. The majority of the images in this post come from my early-morning travels. We’re heading back down in April for a few days and I totally expect to be meandering around the back streets just after sunrise. If you’re a Key West resident and you see a guy walking around with a camera and a green backpack slung over one shoulder, be sure to stop me and say hi. A cup of coffee would be nice, too.

Everyone should know this landmark by now. Installed in 1983, it designates the southernmost point in the continental United States. Actually, it’s the southernmost “public” point. The real southernmost point is on the naval base west of here. I can remember when the only thing here was a rusted chain link fence with a small, white sign that read “90 miles to Cuba” with an arrow pointing off into the distance. There also used to be a semicircular, wrought iron design at the end of the current fence. Not sure what happened to it.

The buoy usually has a line of tourists all waiting their turn to get a picture taken in front of the monument. Even getting there as early as I did, I had to wait until one family took their fill of pictures.

Not everything is pretty in Key West. This house on Elizabeth and Fleming is in desperate need of repair, as are others around Old Town. The empty wine bottle is indicative of the drinking problem that many of the homeless there face. I’ve desaturated and darkened the sky in this image to emphasize that not all skies are bright and blue.

In 2007, the Just 4 Kids charitable organization was asked by the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority to paint roughly 300 Monroe County fire hydrants. In this one example, we see an artist’s rendition of the Southernmost Point buoy. I’ve seen a quiet a number of the painted hydrants around town and they are well executed. Each hydrant is both designed and painted by the kids.

The Stop –n- Shop food Market at the corner of Whitehead and Virginia, it’s proprietor cleaning up and getting ready for another day.

The Artist House on Eaton between Simonton and Bahama. This was once the residence of Robert, a supposedly haunted doll. He’s actually quite big, standing three feet tall. Robert is sometimes referred to as the original Chucky. Enter “Robert the doll” into Google or Yahoo and see what comes up. The house is a favorite stop along the Key West Ghost Tour and is sometimes seen in television documentaries on the supernatural. It was built between 1890 and 1898.

We’re staying here in April… in Robert’s room.

Here’s a picture I took with Robert about 10 or so years ago (that’s my arm in the lower right). He’s kind of creepy.

Someone has painted something they believe in on the side of a building.

Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe on the corner of Greene and Elizabeth. Probably the best key lime pie you’ll eat. Don’t forget the key lime cookies or the key lime fudge. All home made. I think my favorite is a frozen, chocolate covered slice of key lime pie on a stick. Nothing beats it.

This looks to be part of the Just 4 Kids project, but I can’t confirm. The signature reads Maria Candelario. Chickens have always played a big role in Key West. There are a couple thousand free range chickens roaming the island and the residents are divided about whether or not they should stay. Quite frankly, I can’t imagine Key West without the chickens.

I saw this funky parrot on someone’s bike outside the old Customs House, now the Key West Museum of Art and History.

Starfish. Lots of starfish.

Cigars. Lots of cigars. Key West was once known for its tobacco industry and cigar shops are plentiful.

I’d like to think he’s doing this for some extra cash, but his face might tell a different story.

Just off Mallory Square is El Meson de Pepe, one of our favorite restaurants. The atmosphere is always great, whether you choose to dine in out. Inside, enjoy the live music, artwork, and memorabilia. Outside, enjoy the fresh air, live music, and the chickens in the trees.

I’m not sure just how many bars are in Key West, but walk up and down Duval and you can’t help but fall into one, or two.. or three.

Many houses still retain the beautiful scrollwork and gingerbreads.

A nice touch on an Old Town fence that is duplicated on the door behind it.

Captain Tony’s Saloon. This was the original site of Sloppy Joes until it moved across Duval in 1937. Hemmingway said he spent so much time in front of a specific urinal here, that when Sloppy Joes moved, he took the urinal and transplanted it into his garden. It is now part of a fountain that the many polydactyl cats on the property drink from.

These folks are obviously pro-chicken.

Renting a bicycle is a great way to see Key West. The island is only 2 x 4.5 square miles so getting around by bike is quick and efficient. Come to think of it, walking doesn’t take too long either, especially if you’re sticking to Old Town.

B.O.’s Fish Wagon on the corner of William and Caroline.

This includes, but is not limited to, bad weather, beautiful weather, bad fishing days, good fishing days, exhaustion, hangovers, or a good party. We do not recommend this establishment if you are in a hurry, sensitive, or accident prone. No Sniveling Please.”

Only in Key West…

A number of homes in Old Town are in need of care. Some are just simply falling apart. This is what happens when a house well over 100 years old has no one to take care of it. Still, you need to be fairly wealthy to purchase a house like this. One such place across from the Donkey Milk House on Eaton is currently going for $4,750,000. Yes, that’s $4.75 million. Reduced down from $5 Million. Times are hard.

A wonderful touch for an Old town home. I also love the conch door stop.

I’m not sure of the history of this house, but its owners seem to like lions – they decorate the exterior of the house.

Universal Cleaners on Elizabeth between Fleming and Southard. It’s kind of a minor landmark because of the sign. I’ve seen a number of people hitting my blog searching for “gentle cleaning key west” or some derivation of that. Sadly, Universal Cleaners has gone out of business. The inside has been gutted and the building is for sale. I do not know the history behind the sign or the building, but I’m going to try calling the owner to see if I can find anything out.

And this is something that you won’t see anywhere else. If you’re casually walking down the street, you’ll miss it for sure. Seems that the sign’s design, and possibly the business itself, was inspired by the owner’s cat, Jackie. Very touching.

The La Concha Hotel, previously known as the Hotel La Concha. It first opened its doors in 1926.
