Let me just throw out a couple of ideas.

• Ask friends for their honest opinions of your crafts. Do you think someone would pay for this? How much would you suggest?

• Host a recycled craft party in your home or the house of a friend. Save up the supplies or ask people to contribute. Often guests are asked to pay a small fee to cover the supplies which must be purchased. Each guest goes home with something they’ve made.

• Offer to teach recycled craft classes at a local craft store or school event. Provide handouts with your copyright noted to be sure you retain rights to the idea with the idea of publishing online in the future.

I did a Google search for “recycled crafts” and was surprised not to find more quality sites in this field. The best example of a quality recycled craft site, in my opinion, is published by Craft Bits.

That may mean there is a niche waiting to be filled and this could be a very opportune time for you to start a recycled craft blog or website.

Do You Want Your Own Design Business or to Design for Someone Else?
There is a spectrum of ways designers can get their ideas online: from freelancing; to designing exclusively for one company; to retaining your copyrights while designing for someone else to publish; to being a one-woman show with your own blog or website showcasing and selling your ideas.

I wrote a pretty comprehensive answer to another reader who wanted to sell her plastic canvas designs online. I have created many recycled projects for a couple of years now. Mostly holiday crafts. I am a stay at home mom and our budget is limited so I make things.

My question is how do I sell my ideas or get them online so I get credit for creating them?

I use a lot of milk gallon jugs, cardboard, soda bottles, water bottles, anything recycled to make Halloween and Christmas crafts. I do have pictures of some.

I have a lot to offer; so how can I do this? I'm new to trying to get my ideas out there.

Thanks in advance.
Emma

=============================================

Hi Emma,

There are so many different ways you can go in order to get your designs online, it’s hard for me to know where to begin.

Recycled eco-friendly crafts are extremely popular these days. That gives you a leg up. You have the vision and artistic sense to see what something can become – and to realize that vision.

To get a clearer idea of what direction you want to go, think about the following two issues.

What is the Market Value of Your Designs?
What do you do with the things you create? Do you give them all away or use them yourself? Do you have any idea of their market worth?

Have any of your friends asked you to make something for them and offered to pay? Do people marvel at your clever ideas? Have you sold any items to friends or at craft fairs or school bazaars? Positive responses to your gifts and especially requests to buy your recycled crafts, are a strong indication of market value. Actual sales are even better.

You need some type of market validation before you should even think about going online with your ideas or patterns. Yes they are different – but by design. The smaller angled piece may require that you cut a notch before pinning and sewing. With stretchy fabrics you can sometimes skip this. If you do need to notch, be careful not to go too close to the seam line.

Match up the edges and pin starting at the angle and working toward the fabric edges making sure that the edges meet.

Though the pattern directions may suggest otherwise, due to the bulk at the angle I thought it best to start sewing from the matched edges and work toward the angle. I used the technique described above to keep the pieces exactly aligned. Use both hands to gently pull and guide the cap through the machine and you should avoid any puckering.

Trim the seam edges and clip the corners (at the angles). If you haven’t used a serger to bind the seams, apply fray check to the seams. Turn the pieces right side out.

I hope you now have a nice curved hat back which joins to the side flaps without any puckering.

Tags: sewing tips, sewing tricky angles, sewing tutorial, machine sewing tips, sewing caps, notching corners, clipping corners, trimming seams

Artsy Bloggers Roundup #84

Craft Projects
Vickie Howell – Craft. I am sewing a pattern that requires two uneven corners to be seamed together. One corner is wider than 90 degrees and the other is smaller than 90 degrees. When I sew them together, I get a pucker of fabric on the wider angled piece that I can't make go away.

I'm trying to sew a cap, the style known as "driving" or "ivy". The angle in question occurs where the top pattern piece meets the underside pattern piece. Piece A has to join piece B where they are pointing towards each other in the photo I’ve attached.

I really appreciate your trying to help! And I do mean little – lol. This would be a doll size driving cap. I only realized at the end that the problem with this is that I can’t put it on someone’s head to show how it would look. But I think you can easily see that the method I used gives nice smooth curves and un-puckered angles.

Please come back tomorrow for Part 1 of the tutorial.

Tags: sewing tips, sewing tricky angles, sewing tutorial, machine sewing tips, sewing caps, notching corners, clipping corners, trimming seams

Quilted Christmas Place Mats

[Today we’re finishing the Christmas project we started Tuesday.]

Press all the edges flat.

On the back of each stocking, place a batting piece and pin in place. Cut away ⅜-inch of batting all around. Fold the fabric over the batting and pin in place on the front.

Topstitch along the edge of the stocking.

Place two stockings on the mat where desired. Toes can go in or out as you prefer. Place a couple of pins in each stocking to hold in place. Stitch each stocking down onto the mat from top to toe and back up to the top, leaving the stocking top open to hold the silverware. This can be done by machine or by hand. If using the machine, choose a small fairly close zig zag stitch.

Press the stockings and the mat.

Now to embellish. Weave a strand of red rick rack together with one of green. Measure across the top of each stocking and cut the woven rick rack to fit. Use fabric glue to glue in place.

Use gold 3D paint to run little irregular lines down from the rick rack and place a small ball of paint on the end of each line.

Use red 3D paint to define the heel and toe of each stocking. Embellishing is the fun part so go wild. Just remember what you put on the place mats must stand up to a gentle cycle wash. After washing, lay flat or hang to dry. Press on the back side if needed using low to medium heat.

Tags: holiday craft, Christmas craft, holiday place mats, Christmas place mats, quilted place mats, place mats with sewn-in silverware pockets, teach kids to set a table, craft tutorial

Quilted Christmas Place Mats

[This Christmas project started yesterday .]

Optional Tip: Since the edges will not be hemmed but rather will be bound in bias tape, pinking shears can be used to minimize raveling as you work.

For each place mat, cut two rounded rectangles measuring 17 ½ by 12 inches of the main fabric and one of the batting.

Cut one stocking from the second fabric and then turn the pattern over to cut another facing the other direction. Cut one piece of the batting for each stocking.

For the place mat, place first fabric piece right side down on your work surface, then the batting and place the other fabric piece right side up on top. Lining up the edges, pin all three layers together.

Open up the bias tape and make a ½” fold at the very beginning. Pin one edge of the tape even with the edge of the mat. This will be the front of the mat. The bias tape will later be turned to the back side and sewn to complete the binding.

Stitch in the first fold from the edge all around the mat making sure not to have any tucks in the corners. You will have a ⅜-inch seam all around the mat when done. End by cutting the tape off just past the folded end of the tape. Make little clips in the seam allowance in the corners for smooth curves.

Turn the stitched tape to the back side of the mat and pin as shown below.

On the front side, place pins along the little ditch created where the bias tape was just stitched to the main fabric. These pins will secure the bias tape folded over the back of the place mat, so you can remove the pins from the back (last picture) before running the mat through the sewing machine.

With the place mat right side up, stitch all around keeping your stitches close to the bias tape. In quilting, this is called “stitching in the ditch” and will give a nice finished look on both sides.

Come back tomorrow to complete your Christmas place mats.

Tags: holiday craft, Christmas craft, holiday place mats, Christmas place mats, quilted place mats, place mats with sewn-in silverware pockets, teach kids to set a table, craft tutorial

Quilted Christmas Place Mats

Delight your family Christmas morn with these clever place mats at the breakfast table. I think the 4 x 7 x 7-inch shade would do just fine for your canning jar lamp. The picture above is an artist’s (me – lol) rendering of how a 4 x 7 x 7 shade will look. In fact I think this look is better suited to such a small lamp than the photo in yesterday’s post.

For future reference, here are some guidelines for determining lampshade size for a well-proportioned look.

How to Select the Right Size Lampshade for a Table Lamp
Measure the height of the lamp base from the table to the bottom of the bulb socket.

• Shade Height should equal between five-eighths and seven-eights the height of the base as measured above (base + socket stem).
• Shade Bottom Diameter should equal the base height (base + socket stem) plus or minus two inches.

How to Select a Lamp Harp for a Table Lamp
The harp which slips into the sides of the light bulb socket should not be visible when the lamp is viewed at eye level. In other words, it should be hidden by the lampshade. Consequently, the harp should be the height of the shade plus or minus approximately one half inch.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 350px; height: 175px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_y70ea7DAobE/Ss0IKPeu43I/AAAAAAAAB3k/TCcmwNljVRE/s320/BOGO+10-09+Coupon.jpg" border="0" alt="Artful Crafter Order Page"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389973301079499634" />Tags: selecting lampshades, best size lampshades, table lamp lampshades, canning jar lamps, Mason jar lamps, craft ideas, lampshade guidelines, making table lamps

How to Select the Right Size Lampshade for a Canning Jar Lamp
Hello,

I am looking to find some suggestions, please.

I am making 1 quart wide mouth canning jar lamps and have gone to the Fogg lighting website to purchase the lampshades. I’m so glad you’re enjoying The Artful Crafter website.

I agree with you that a 4 x 11 x 7 inch shade would be too big for a standard 1-quart canning jar lamp.

The picture above shows a 1-quart canning jar lamp which measures 8 ½ inches in height from the bottom of the jar to the bottom of the lamp socket. I think the shade looks pretty well-proportioned to the lamp base. It measures 3 inches in diameter at the top, 8 ½ inches at the bottom, and 6 inches in height.

Come back tomorrow for guidelines on selecting the right size lampshade.

Tags: selecting lampshades, best size lampshades, table lamp lampshades, canning jar lamps, Mason jar lamps, craft ideas, lampshade guidelines, making table lamps

How to Cut Bamboo Slats for Your Craft Projects
[This saga of the custom made blinds which didn’t fit started yesterday.]

Two months later when we picked the blinds up and got them home, we discovered that an inch and a half had been added to the width for an outside mount. Attach a rotary blade for wood to the Dremel. Holding the blade perpendicular to the cut line, turn on the Dremel and press down. It’s easy to feel when the Dremel touches the cardboard. I’ve woven them into place mats and used them to embellish picture frames. They make good paint stirrers. You’ll find some suppliers of raw slats sold in bundles or rolls. It may be difficult to tell if the slats have the correct stiffness for your fans just from the pictures. If you connect with a wholesaler, they would be willing to send you samples.

However if you don’t need or want to spend the time developing a relationship with a wholesaler, there is a quicker, easier way which may even save you money.

Go to your local Home Depot or Pier 1 and look for bamboo place mats or an inexpensive bamboo blind made of the type of slat you need. Pull the slats apart as needed when you make your fans.

This is not as tricky as it may sound. Guess what? I figured out how you're getting a candy cane stripe!

So I’ve revised the instructions for the Diamondback Weave. I found the weave is easier to describe if you hold one color in each hand. I came up with a mantra that helped the work go without mistakes.

I've also added a new tip. If you run out of pole to weave on before the braid is long enough, remove the rubber band. Slide the woven length partially off the pole. Secure the top with a paper clip. Clamp a pinch clip on the braid and pole to hold the braid in place. Continue weaving.

I'm sorry for your trouble, but thank you for writing to let me know. And also for the new Candy Cane Stripe Weave.
