As most of you know, I am pursuing my Banking & Finance degree. A few hours ago, I submitted my last paper. Minutes prior to submission, a sudden sense of emptiness overwhelmed me. This is it. I told myself. I did not even try to finish my exam questions fast in order to leave the exam hall early. I'll miss being a student.

Throughout my life as a student from Primary school all the way to Polytechnic, I've never put in my best effort to study. Perhaps it's the subject matter or perhaps it's because we're all forced to do so. All I know is, I'd never truly "mugged" for any subject.

In a competitive job market such as Singapore, I knew that I needed a degree. The question is, which one? I eventually narrowed down to Banking & Finance. I felt that financial knowledge is something that's useful even in everyday life. And I can finally make sense of all the financial crises happening around the world.

Getting back to school ignited my new found love for studying and mentoring. A big thank you to all my friends, classmates, project mates and especially the lecturers; their patience and concern made this journey easier.

And last but not least, to my girlfriend, Bonita for always being there for me; accompanying me in Starbucks, McDonald's, libraries and school classrooms while I do my revisions/assignments. Now I have more time for you.

Yes, I am finally a graduate. What should I conquer next?

In Space No One Can Hear You Scream

In anticipation of Prometheus, the girlfriend and I watched Alien recently. We wanted to have a better background of the whole situation so we can enjoy Prometheus better.

Background
In the distant future, men has ventured into space for resources. Nostromo is one of such commercial spaceships, towing several million tons of mineral ore back to Earth. One by one, the seven crew members on-board the spaceship wakes up from their hibernation. Instead of being on the way back to Earth, the computer, Mother, on-board the ship has intercepted a signal in space and is heading towards the signal to investigate.

All I wanted was a friend.

No prize for guessing what they discovered on that planet. Alien life form. More specifically, lots of alien eggs.

And one of the crews got himself attached to one. No, not fall in love with one. He had one attached to his face. Yes, we are talking about the infamous Facehugger.

I can't really go on without giving out more spoilers. But all you have to know is that this is a good movie. All hell breaks loose from here on.

Unlike movies nowadays which try to confuse you with special effects to make up for the lack of plot or directing skills (yes, I am talking about you Michael Bay), Ridley Scott allows you to soak in the whole atmosphere and fucks you right there. You genuinely fear for the crews' and for your own life. And it helps that we were watching it in a dark room in the middle of the night.

To sidetrack a little, anyone else thinks that Sigourney Weaver in 1979 looks like Kristen Steward? Even the acting style was pretty similar. Cold, expressionless acting.

Stiff acting before it was cool.

Displaying Google map on Drupal

If like me you have been cracking your head trying to integrate Google Map into Drupal, watch the video below and read the guide after that. Definitely helped in my understanding.

But you need to get some stuff ready before diving in.

Google Maps API - Sign up and get your Google Maps API key. You will have to input it later on in order for the map to work.
GMap (Drupal Module) - This will provide an interface to the Google Maps API within Drupal.
Location (Drupal Module) - It allows you to associate location information (coordinates, address, etc... ), with Drupal nodes and users.

After watching the video, have a look at this guide, Mapping with Drupal: GMap, Location & Views. You will learn how to create a view with the information you've created above.

My December

I have been anticipating for the arrival of December.

The end of a year. The welcoming of a new year. Christmas. Gatherings. Presents. Celebrations. Alcohol. Our anniversary. Her birthday. December is just filled with endless fun.

But most importantly, come December 15, I will be eligible to register for my Class 2A lessons. And I will try my very best to get my license as fast as possible this time. No more slacking. For we know that by attaining my Class 2A is another step closer to Class 2, which ultimately leads to my Fireblade.

I used to be full of energy. Now, I am always feeling sleepy; even more so in the afternoon.

I have been out studying the whole day but I am not absorbing as much knowledge as I would like to. The numbers and theories seem like a blur to me now. Either I am really getting old and my speed of learning has gotten worse or the curriculum is getting difficult.

But I suspect that it might just be the lack of proper sleep. Even as I am typing this, my eyes are threatening to close.

And the reason I am always feeling sleepy? The girlfriend.

First of all, the girlfriend refuses to let me sleep in peace every night. We will engage in a fight over my bolster every single time due to her refusal to let me hug my bolster to sleep; she wants me to hug her to sleep instead. And when I refuses to do so, she'll hug my bolster to sleep and I'm left with nothing. My bolster is very important to me. I even brought my bolster to ICT (in-camp training). And that shows commitment!

Secondly, my weight gain. Whenever we are out eating, my girlfriend likes ordering lots of food. And she force feeds me. Most of the time we'll have lots of leftovers, not wanting to waste food, I'll try to finish all of it. Now, I am smarter, I rather let the food go to waste than increase the size of my waist. And as you know, weight gain = lesser energy = sleepy. She blames it on my soft drinks drinking habit though.

Pumping Petrol In Malaysia: How Much Do I Actually Save?

After finding out how much money my colleague saved over the years just by pumping petrol in Johor Bahru, I decided to start pumping petrol in JB too.

But the problem is, I've not travelled into Malaysia in a motorcycle or a car for a long time, especially not since the new custom buildings were erected. I have no idea where to pump and where to u-turn.

Undeterred, the girlfriend and I took the plunge and rode in late one night.

The first thing we realised was humps, speed humps, lots of them. You must go through at least 20 speed humps before reaching Johor Bahru. Some of the humps were not even coloured. I went through a few humps quite aggressively; I was so worried that my front rim will dent.

The next thing was not knowing where to turn back. So I devised a cleaver plan to just follow the Singaporean cars from the petrol kiosk. Unfortunately, the one that we followed was not going back to Singapore. The girlfriend and I nearly ended up on the highway to Kuala Lumpur because the roads were dark and there wasn't seem to be any legitimate u-turns around.

I decided to tag along my colleague to pump petrol last Monday evening. Now I know where's the petrol kiosks, u-turns, money changer and where to have food!

So, how much do I actually save every trip I make?

Assume:

RON 95 (Singapore) = RON 97 (Malaysia)
Price today: S$2.04/litre vs S$1.1847/litre (RM2.9/litre) (Exchage rate 0.4085)

Fuel Consumption: 17km/litre

I made a trip this afternoon and the bill came up to RM26.62 (S$10.87).

26.62/2.9 = 9.1793litres

The same amount of petrol would have cost me (in Singapore):

9.1793 x 2.04 = 18.725772

85% (Esso Smile + Citibank Card discount) x 18.725772 = $15.92

Price of trip: 28/17x1.1847 = $1.95

Total amount saved: $15.92 - $10.87 - $1.95 = $3.13.

I only save S$3.13 everytime I pump petrol in Johor Bahru. Either I need a bigger fuel tank or I need the currency difference to be greater.

This morning, I called the company in-charge of the money robbing machine again and a lady finally picked up the phone. She assured me that if their staff find my money in the machine, they will send it in the form of a cheque to my address in a month's time. A month's time! I would have moved by then!

The girlfriend was not satisfied with this answer so she took the company's number from me and called the company again. I think they are trying to speed up the process now. Let's hope I'll receive my money soon. I am a poor student you know?!

I Was Robbed Of $50

It's true. The machines are taking over the world. I was just robbed of $50 by a machine.

As some of you may know, I collect $1 coins. After school today, I decided to ride to Cineleisure and exchange $1 coins at the basement. I withdrew $220 and was ready to convert all of them into shiny little $1 coins (MY PRECIOUS!!!).

The note feeder took my money and failed to dispense any coins because it does not have enough coins. Instead of returning me my $50, it decided to keep my money and display an "insufficient coins" error.

I tried calling the number listed on the machine but operating hours were well over; all I got from the number was "the mailbox is full, goodbye!". I think I can jolly well kiss my $50 goodbye.

While walking down the street one day a MP is tragically hit by a truck and dies.

The MP's soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

"Welcome to heaven," says St. Peter . "Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you
see, so we're not sure what to do with you."

"No problem, just let me in," says the MP.

St. Peter says, "Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you
can choose where to spend eternity."

"Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in? heaven," says the MP.

"I'm sorry, but we have our rules", replies St.Peter.

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a
green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him.

Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich
at the expense of the people.

They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne.

Also present is the Devil, who really is a very friendly guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that
before he realizes it, it is time to go.

Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises...

The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him.

"Now it's time to visit heaven," St Peter says.

So, 24 hours pass with the MP joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time
and the 24 hours in heaven passes by and St Peter returns.

"Well, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now which will you choose for your eternity?" St Peter asks.

The MP reflects for a minute, then he answers, "Well, I never would have thought it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would
be happier and better off .. in hell."

So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell.

Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage.

He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above.

The Devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder.

"I don't understand," stammers the MP. "Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank
champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?"

The Devil looks at him, smiles and says,

"Yesterday we were campaigning.......
