The first results on numu disappearance and search for sterile neutrinos, based on the initial data sets, have been published already and the first results on nue appearance have been presented at the recent conferences. The current emphasis in the analysis
efforts is to refine all of these measurements with a much larger data sample based on 7E20 protons on target. In addition, starting this fall, we shall commence a dedicated run with muon antineutrinos.

Application Deadline: October 15, 2009

Further Scholarship Information and Application (PDF)

A fully-funded PhD position in the School of Biological Sciences

A fully-funded PhD position in the School of Biological Sciences, Bangor University, is available under the supervision of Dr Anita Malhotra to start in autumn 2009. The programme offers one or two PhD-level researchers studying or working in a UK academic or Governmental institution the opportunity to kick-start their career by gaining up to two year’s experience in a Toshiba R&D laboratory in Japan.

The Toshiba Fellowship Programme was set up with the objective of nurturing cultural understanding between the UK, Europe and Japan in the fields of technology and engineering. It gives Fellows the opportunity to work in a highly innovative organisation, in a country renowned for its world-class technology.

Since it was established 26 years ago, the Toshiba Fellowship Programme has attracted high-calibre applicants from the UK’s top universities in the area of science and technology. To date, it has given 29 Fellows a unique start to their careers, and Toshiba’s R&D departments have gained from their fresh thinking in return. Many of the Toshiba Fellowship alumni have gone on to successful careers, investing their skills back into the UK and European knowledge base and economy.

The programme also gives you a great opportunity to discover a new world in Industry before deciding where they would like to permanently settle their career. Toshiba also provides a network of contacts and have an Alumni society, which reunites every year in London to share knowledge, enhance networking and maintain good relations between Toshiba and its past Fellows.

The successful Fellows would undertake a research project in a Toshiba’s R&D lab in Japan, and at the same time will discover a new culture; totally immersed into the Japanese way of life. During their stay, they may take Japanese language lessons. Toshiba Fellows benefit from an excellent salary and relocation allowance. Toshiba Fellows can also enjoy some free time exploring Japan with their 20 days’ annual leave (in addition to Japanese Public Holidays) Toshiba Fellows are well looked after during their time at one of the Toshiba’s research laboratories in Tokyo.

<span class="Apple-style-span" Grant recipients are therefore selected as much for their leadership capabilities as for their scientific talents, and they are expected to return to their home countries to continue their academic careers and inspire other young women.

Faculty for the Future grants are in the range of USD 25,000 to 50,000 per year, and may be renewed through to completion of studies subject to performance, self-evaluation, and recommendations from supervisors. The amount of the grant depends on the actual costs of studying and living in the chosen location.

Eligibility criteria and application process instructions can be found atNew Grant Application Process or Renewal Grant Application Process

New Grant Application Process

Renewal Grant Application Process

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Access the FFTF Web Community

Related Resources

NEW GRANT APPLICATION PROCESSBack to Top
Applications for a 2010 grant open October 5, 2009 and close November 30, 2009. style="font-size: medium; ">
If you are a citizen from a developing or emerging country but resident in a developed country for the purpose of studying, you are eligible to apply.

Am I eligible to apply even if I plan to pursue my PhD or post-doc in my home university?
The FFTF program aims to give the opportunity to scientific women from developing and emerging countries to pursue a PhD or a post-doc in the best universities abroad. However we sometimes accept “sandwich programs” where students spend only a part of the grant year in a university abroad.

Am I eligible to apply if I plan to pursue my PhD or post-doc in a university of another developing or emerging country?
The FFTF program aims to give the opportunity to scientific women from developing and emerging countries to pursue PhD or post-doc in the best universities abroad. If you’ve been accepted in a university of excellence you are eligible, even if it’s not in a developed country.

Is there a list of host universities accredited to the FFTF program?
No. However, we encourage you to apply to the best universities abroad in your discipline. The university you will be accepted in will be taken into account in the decision process.

Which disciplines are eligible?
Eligible applicants are those preparing for PhD or post-doc study in the physical sciences or related technologies. If you apply before the first year of study, you are allowed to begin your course and consequently to receive your grant funding until the spring of the following year. For example, if you apply in 2009, you will know the award results in spring 2010. If grant recipients have not commenced study by spring semester 2011, the grant award expires.

Is it a mandatory requirement of the grant to return home and to pursue an academic career? However, during the application process—new or renewal—we look closely at evidence of your commitment to return home and the level of your relationship with your home-country university[ies]. The quality of this evidence has a significant impact on the likelihood of winning or renewing an award.

How many years is the grant typically renewable for?
Grants may be renewed through to completion of your PhD or post-doc—subject to performance, self-evaluation, and recommendations from supervisors (preferably host and home).

Is it necessary to provide the diploma and letter of admittance from my university in English? However, in our selection process we do consider the number of active teaching years remaining after the PhD or post-doc has been acquired.

If I bring my family with me to the host country, will the Schlumberger foundation financially support them?
FFTF grants are based on actual expenses to be incurred by the student only. Expenses typically include tuition and required university fees, an estimation of accommodation costs, a living allowance (for food, books, and supplies, medical/insurance cover, childcare, transport costs), and a budget for travel, visa, and conference expenses. This can be up to USD 50,000 per year.

After submitting my application online, can I access and modify it before the closing date?
You can update your application and save it as often as you like before submitting it. Once you’ve submitted it you cannot change it anymore. Your referees will then receive a notification e-mail.

I've just submitted my application, what else am I expected to do?
When will I be informed of the selection results?
You should wait for results to be delivered. The results are usually available on the application Web site by the end of March every year. Awarded applicants will then receive a personal e-mail. Unsuccessful applicants will usually receive a formal letter by end of April.

How are grant recipients selected?
The selection process includes five rounds:

First round: Is based on compliance with eligibility criteria such as country of origin, discipline and overall quality of application. We cannot engage in individual correspondence nor give individual reasons for not receiving a grant.

In addition to completion, applications are typically unsuccessful due to the following reasons:

Poor quality, incomplete application (especially in the personal essay and project statement sections).

Unmet eligibility criteria.

Insufficient evidence of commitment to return to home country or to teach.

Level of qualification (the Schlumberger Foundation only funds PhD and post-doctorate programs).

Faculty for the Future seeks to have an impact on gender balance in science disciplines by reinforcing the presence and qualifications of women university teachers in developing and emerging economies. We firmly believe that a better gender balance at faculty level will encourage more women to study the sciences and engineering disciplines.

If you are well prepared to meet the core criteria and decide to embark on a doctoral program next year, you are most welcome to reapply online.

Access the FFTF Web CommunityBack to Top
In 2007 a Web forum was launched to support the building of the Faculty for the Future community. This method, particularly efficient for indoor propagation, is devoted to be implemented in a radio
network planning tool. This tool needs to propose all kind of modern radio link conditions: indoor, outdoor, indoor to outdoor, outdoor to indoor, for 3G/4G, WLAN or WMAN (WiMax), from macrocells to femtocells.

Thus, the study will contain four main parts:

-computational efficiency enhancement of the MR-FDPF method;
-implementation of statistical analysis of radio channel behaviour
rather than only considering mean power level;
-integration of our indoor propagation tool into a wide areas
simulation tool with other propagation methods such as ray-tracing in
collaboration with other partners;
-measurement campaigns and model calibration.

The PhD candidate will work the first year in the CITI Lab of INSA Lyon in order to propose all possible enhancements on the MR-FDPF method and will be associated to the SWING INRIA project team (at INSA Lyon, France). Then he will spend two years seconded in Ranplan Wireless Network Design Ltd, partnet of the iPLAN project (located in Luton, UK). Ranplan's R&D department is expected to launch an automatic planning tool, and the results of this work will contribute to this innovating tool.

References:
[1] G. de La Roche, K. Cooperation with London University
(professor Steve Maybank).

Project summary.
ISIR (Institute of Intelligent Systems & Robotics) (former Laboratoire de
Robotique de Paris,) of Paris 6 University studies neuro-cognitive
human-space interaction in order to design and realize prototypes of
intelligent systems, robotics and mechatronics systems, highly autonomous
and/or able to assist healthy and handicapped (especially visually
impaired), in performing everyday life tasks. The provision of autonomous
mobility for the visually impaired is a difficult but important societal
problem. Solutions based on GPS and a digital map of the environment are
not suitable because of the low, 10m, precision of GPS, poor satellite
signal reception in urban areas and indoors, and the difficulty of
responding to changes in the environment. Artificial vision in the form of
SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) provides a satisfactory
solution for autonomous mobile robots. However, SLAM is not suitable for
assisting the visually impaired, because human navigation is far more
complex than that of a mobile robot. Human navigation leads to the
definition of natural visual SLAM (SLAM-VN). SLAM-VN is a simulation of
the visual perception-motion loop, including feedback from inertial
sensors to the imaging system, in analogy with the human vestibulo-ocular
feedback. This should reinforce the robustness of classical stereovision
systems and solve the problem of the spatio-temporal instabilities caused
by uneven ground and by sudden and unpredictable human movements. This
thesis aims to define precisely the concept of SLAM-VN and model it in
hardware and software. We will use the ISIR convergent stereovision system
to which we will add an inertial system, which will play the role
analogous to the human vestibular system. The combined system is named
intelligent glasses (IG). One of challenges of the IG system is the
correct synchronization and fusion of the visual information and the
inertial information. The information about the environment obtained by
SLAM-VN will be used for object recognition and tracking, and obstacle
detection. The Fisher-Rao metric will be used to quantify the accuracy
with which the objects and obstacles can be described. This will lead to
the design of new vision processing algorithms, never investigated before.
3D object localization (precision of ~ 0.5 m) will be established via
RANSAC type algorithms. Object tracking will use a classical approach such
as a particle filter. The SLAM-VN model will be validated by experiments,
including navigation in real environments by both the visually impaired
and by the robot iCUB (European humanoid robotic platform of ISIR
laboratory). The interface for visually impaired will include a touch
stimulating interface upon which obstacles will be displayed
Key words: visual perception, stereo, inertial data, data fusion,
localization, object recognition, Fisher-Rao metric, RANSAC, particle
filter,visually impaired mobility assistance

- Starting date: October 2009
- Duration: 3 years
- Required education: Master in Computer Science, or Robotics, or
Intelligent Systems, or Cognitive Science, or Human/animal
Physiology/Biology obtained in 2009 in a European Union University;
- Be 26 year old or less

- Required skills: Programming in C and C++; The key aim of VIBOT is to produce the next generation of leading engineering researchers to solve important future challenges in a broad range of engineering applications. Starting from a comprehensive coverage of the prerequisites in the field of digital imagery and basic image processing, the students will cover at specialized level all subjects of artificial vision applied to robotics, medical imagery and 3D vision.

This Masters programme will provide an unrivalled knowledge in computer vision and robotics applied to industrial problems and medical imagery. Moreover, the students will have also acquired a mobility, a broadmindedness and the language skills which constitute, in an age of globalization, a major asset for finding research work either in a public laboratory or in a private company.

VIBOT encompasses a broad spectrum of scientific and engineering research from fundamental theoretical results to applied engineering solutions that have strong industrial relevance. Individuals within the VIBOT research network are leading authorities on areas ranging from computer vision, autonomous vehicles, statistical signal processing, robotics and image processing.

The Masters candidates will experience research cultures in three different European countries and will be able to draw on the expertise from leading experts in different disciplines and different nationalities. The students spend the first semester in Scotland, the second in Spain and the third in France. The fourth semester is reserved for the 5-month Masters research project at one of the host universities or in industry.

Selection Criteria
Admission to VIBOT is highly competitive and based on academic excellence. Applicants should have a minimum of a BSc degree in computer science, electrical engineering, physics or mathematics. The VIBOT research programme is intended for top level non-EU and EU students with a fluent knowledge in spoken and written English (TOEFL 550). Applicants are expected to provide a statement of their research interests and motivation.

Further information and application procedure can be found at:
http://vision. u-bourgogne. fr/masters/ vibot/
Closing date: 15th January 2010

Further Details

http://www.jobs. ac.uk/jobs/ CK045/16_ Erasmus-Mundus_ Studentships
