Teaching Portfolio

After graduating from college in December, the number one priority was finding a job. Since it would be in the middle of the school year, I was scared that there wouldn't be any jobs available.

The first thing I started researching was what all I needed to have to apply for a job and what I needed in case of an interview opportunity. The first thing I found was to have a PORTFOLIO for the Principal to look at. I started asking myself, "What is a portfolio?" "What goes in the portfolio?" After all, nowhere in my college education did they teach us about having a portfolio for job interviews.

Well.... lucky for you, I am going to give you a list of items that are NECESSARY for you to have!

Teaching Job Portfolio:

1. Table of Contents:

This is where you have a list and page number for your potential boss to find a certain document. Having a table of contents keeps your binder ORGANIZED and you can flip within a second to whatever you are looking for.

2. Resume:

Having your resume accessible to the principal is important. Most of the time they will already have your resume from your application but you need to have extra copies in your portfolio in case there are other people who sit in on your interview. You also need to make sure your resume is UP TO DATE! Principals love to see your past experiences and what your degree is in and if you have additional endorsements attached to your degree.

3. Teacher Certificate:

Your teaching certificate is the MOST IMPORTANT document in your portfolio. Your teaching certificate shows proof that you are certified to teach in Georgia (or the state you are living in). If you have passed your GACE certifications but have not received your Certificate from the GAPSC then you can print off your GACE results and that shows them you are certified but waiting on "that piece of paper!"

4. References/Letter of Recommendation

A lot of people attach their references to their resume.... However, I have found out that your resume NEEDS TO BE NO MORE THAN 1 PAGE in length. I have heard some Principals or higher up personnel will automatically throw out your application if your resume is more than 1 page. So I decided to make my own section for references and letter of recommendations. This is important for any job you are applying for. Principals want to read those recommendation letters and also contact those references that you have worked with or that know your professional skills. If you are in education... I would suggest having all your mentor teachers and supervisors writing you a letter of recommendation if they will.

5. Sample Lesson Plans

When you are in education you write TONS OF LESSON PLANS throughout your college career. would suggest to have 3-4 lesson plans in your portfolio that are in different grades. This shows Principals you are aware of the standards that your students have to meet, how to write a lesson plan, and what kind of lessons you are teaching in your classroom. Each school requires there teachers to produce lesson plans in different ways. I would suggest to have your EQ, Standard, Anticipatory Set, Instruction, Assessment, and Differentiation in your lesson plans.

6. Observations/Evaluations

The last thing that is necessary to have in your portfolio is observations and/or evaluations. Principals love to see how others rate you or score you on your teaching. You will have many observations throughout your field experience. Make copies of the reports and include them in your portfolio. Also, during your student teaching you will have a midterm evaluation and a final observation. Include this!! This is your most recent evaluation from your supervisor and can be a great reference for you landing a job!

This is NOT everything I have included in my portfolio. I feel though after going to different interviews, these are the most important documents for a Principal to look at. I have landed my first job opportunity and I am so excited to start!! I hope this will help in anyway! Student Teaching Update and Write the Room Freebie

It seems like it has been forever since my last blog post.

I've been EXTREMELY busy with student teaching, but I am LOVING every minute of it.

For those of you that do not know, I am completing my student teaching in KINDERGARTEN!
The faculty and staff I work with are amazing! My mentor teacher is super helpful, and I am so blessed to be in her class.

I'm having so much fun teaching my precious students, and learning from them.
One of the biggest challenges kindergarten teachers face is the lack of resources, such as textbooks.
Since kindergarten does not have textbooks, you must supplement in different ways. Most of the time that means creating your own activities, mini booklets, games, etc.

My mentor teacher allowed me to bring in my own ideas and activities into our classroom to help.

One of my favorite activities I created was a Write-the-Room activity.
I've searched and searched on the Internet for these types of activities, but I never found one that appealed to me. However, I did find a seller on Teachers Pay Teachers that I liked, but the words were not typed with the handwriting paper lines.

{One of the things my kindergarten students need extra help with is handwriting.}
Since this was a handwriting activity, I thought it would be important to have the words typed on the handwriting lined paper. Yet, I was not able to find this anywhere!

Therefore, I decided to take matters into my own hands and create one myself.

I found the perfect font from a free font downloader, HERE.

Here is a preview of my Write-the-Room activity.

I created ten of these mini signs. Each sign includes one of the Dolch Sight Words and an ice cream image. I selected ten sight words, five sight words were review words from the previous week, and the other five were the new ones.

I printed out the signs, and backed them on black cardstock. Next, I laminated them for durability and future use. Then, I posted them within our classroom.

I also created a matching handout. The handout is two pages, but I printed it double-sided to save paper!

Each student was given a handout, and had to look for the matching pictures and write the word.

MY STUDENTS LOVED THIS! It was entertaining, because they had to look carefully around the room to find each ice cream.

Mommy's Special Necklace {Review & Giveaway}

Five years ago, I gained my first nephew. Although at the time I did not know him, he is my little man who I love very deeply. My sister-in-law gave birth to Caden on January 9th, 2008. Binder Cover! {Freebie}

Busy {Wedding} Weekend!

What a busy, busy weekend!

I had the pleasure of helping out with a family friend’s wedding!

It was an absolutely gorgeous outdoor wedding.

As many of you may know, it has nearly rained every day in Georgia this summer.

However, The rain held off for the couple’s big day.

The wedding was held at the bride’s parents’ house.

They have a huge backyard, which was perfect for the ceremony and reception.

Here is a picture of where the ceremony was held.

The wedding was a simple, yet elegant event.

The main colors of the wedding were pink, black, and white.

These three colors displayed a very elegant appearance.

Here is a closer view of the wedding arbor and the decorated fence.

The arbor is decorated with hot pink tulle and pink and white silk flowers.

The fence was not originally going to be decorated. However, there were four unpainted pieces of the fence on the right side. We decided to nail pink chair sashes to the fence to cover up the pieces of wood. I think the decorated fence pulls everything together. Doesn't it look amazing?

The finishing touches for the ceremony included handmade bows that were attached to the inside chairs.

The bride and groom were completing the unity sand with their daughter.

This was such a special moment for them.

Along with a beautiful ceremony, they had a beautiful reception!

We decorated the reception with white chair covers and black silk bows.

This made the reception look {SUPER} elegant!

We had simple DIY centerpieces.

The centerpieces were clear cylinder vases with crystals attached to it.

Inside, it had glass marbles, a silk flower, water, and a floating white tea light candle.

We paired it with hot pink silk fabric, and pink crystal gems around it.

I loved how well everything turned out.

We spent all day Friday and part of the day Saturday preparing for this wonderful day.

The only pictures I did not take, were of the food! The food was absolutely delicious! The bride and groom had authentic Italian food served at the reception from, Italy's Pizza and Pasta.

The food is to die for!

They served tossed salad with homemade lasagna, cheese ravioli with vodka sauce, chicken alfredo, homemade Italian bread, their famous garlic knots, and tiramisu for dessert!

I highly recommend trying this place out if you live or visit near the Buford area!

You will not regret it!

10 Things You Don't Know About Me {Alesha}

Sorry for the delay in blog posts.

All of us {Kacey, Amanda, and I}, have been working non-stop on school assignments. We just completed our Pre-Clinical Portfolio, so we can begin student teaching in August.

Along with working on my portfolio, I have been planning a baby shower for my precious nephew that will be arriving this fall! I am super excited about the shower, and cannot wait to share all the fine details with you soon. I don’t want to give away too many details, because I want the mother-to-be to have some surprises!

Anyways, I have created a short and interesting post for your enjoyment!

10 Things You Don't Know About Me:

1. I love cowboy boots. Clint bought my first pair of boots, and they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn.

2. I am obsessed with the TV show, Reba! I have several seasons on DVD. I watch a few episodes each night before going to bed.

3. I love to play golf. It is super relaxing, and helps relieve stress. However, I'm not very good, but I do have my own set of clubs!

4. I LOVE Chinese food, mainly for the fortune cookie! One of my friends from work and I think our lives are based on the fortunes we receive.

5. When I was younger, my dad took me to meet the NASCAR driver, Bill Elliott. I was so terrified, because that was my first encounter with someone "famous." I still have his autograph.

6. I dislike the color orange! This is probably due to the fact that I am a UGA fan, and that our rivals are orange!

7. I have never flown on a plane! I have traveled to many places, but I usually get to my destinations either by car or ship.

8. I am a beach bum! I could lay on the beach in the warm sun all day, every day!

9. I strongly dislike scary movies! I use to watch them all the time, and it never phased me. If I were to watch a scary movie now, I would never go to sleep at night.

10. I LOVE school supplies, especially pens! I purchase more pens, than anyone else I know. I have enough pens to last me my entire life, but that doesn’t stop me from buying more!

Lesson Planning {American Symbols Booklet}

This semester, I am taking my final two classes before student teaching!!

{Pre-planning is only 34 days away, but who’s counting? :)}

I am taking Special Needs Inclusion, and Creative Performance.

In the Creative Performance class, we are required to create a unit plan integrating the Fine Arts. I decided to complete my unit on American Symbols, which is a social studies standard for kindergarten. I had no idea what I wanted to use in my unit. Since this is a “Creativity” class, I needed to be creative, aka ORIGINAL!

So, I did some thinking and decided I wanted my students to complete an American Symbols book as part of their assessment.

I knew exactly how I wanted the booklet to look like, so I decided to create it myself!

Here is a picture of the front cover! I'm so excited it! :)

The American Symbols that are included in this booklet are:

National and State Flags

Statue of Liberty

Lincoln Memorial

Washington Monument

The White House

Bald Eagle

The Liberty Bell

The Liberty Bell is not part of the Georgia Performance Standards.
{However, I think it is an important American Symbol our students should know about!}

I absolutely love developing and writing lesson plans! My favorite part of developing my plans is getting to create my own printables.

I am so excited about how my booklet turned out, and I wanted to share it on my blog!

Organization Made Easy

For those that do not know me personally, I am super organized.

I always have my notebooks neat and tidy, and I ALWAYS have a planner.
Throughout my college experience, I found that being organized made my life less stressful.

I keep up with all of my assignments in a monthly/weekly planner.

I have purchased many different planners over the years.
I have loved some, and others...well not so much. I am not crazy about planners that are heavy. My book bag is heavy enough with textbooks, notebooks, pens and pencils.

I don’t need an extremely heavy planner to add to that.

I finally found the perfect planner for me, although, it was a bit pricey. I cannot believe how expensive planners can be!

However, I purchased the planner in June, not realizing it did not start until July 1^st.

I was technically without a planner for at least three weeks, so I had to improvise.

I created my own weekly and monthly planners.
They are very cute, yet simple.

I wish I had waited to purchase a planner, because I would have used the printouts I created.

The weekly and monthly planners I produced are very convenient to print out, hole-punch, and place in a notebook.

Hey!

I’m Amanda McEwen! I am very excited to be starting this blog with two of my best friends Kacey and Alesha! I am currently a senior at the University of North Georgia and finishing up my degree in Early Childhood Education. I will be graduating in December and I cannot wait to begin this new chapter of my life. Ever since I was three years old I have always wanted to be a teacher so I am ecstatic that it is finally getting close.

My parents and my family are so important to me and I would not be who I am today if it was not for them!

My mom and dad are absolutely amazing! They are always supporting and encouraging me to follow all of my dreams. No matter what happens they are always there for me and I definitely could not be achieving all my goals in life if it was not for the two of them.

I also have a sister that is three years younger than me. She is smart and funny and we are best friends.

My best friends are so important to me and I love hanging out with them!

I also love to read, go to the beach, travel, and much more! You will definitely learn more about me as we write this blog.

Dating your husband (or wife)

Ever since Jonathan and I got married in 2011 our schedules are extremely hectic. My schedule alone is filled up most of the time. Between working full time 6:00-4:00 Monday thru Friday and at the time having class three to four nights a week till 8:30 does not leave much time for me and hubby.

Now that it is summertime I only work 2 to 3 days a week and have class on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (for the most part), we have a little more time for us.

Although we are married it is extremely important for us to spend time with each other. Since I will be starting student teaching in 5 weeks, Jonathan and I have tried to plan one night a week for a date night. This doesn’t mean going out and spending lots of money. Sometimes this means renting a movie, making dinner, and relaxing at home on the couch together.

One thing I created is a date night jar. This date night jar is labeled by the color written on the sticks. Based on what color is written on the stick, depends on how costly the date night is. In the jar there are about 40 different date nights. This is a great way for us to pick something to do because we are both indecisive and can never make up our minds!

Listed below are some of the dates we have in our jar:

Free:

1. Movie (that you have at home) and popcorn

2. Play a board game

3. Bake a dessert together

4. Go for a long walk together

5. Play the Wii

Little or moderate cost:

1. Movie of his choice (rent or go see)

2. Movie of her choice (rent or go see)

3. Go to a new restaurant

4. Go play mini golf

5. Go bowling

Pricey and could require some planning:

1. Dinner in Atlanta

2. Overnight stay at a hotel

3. Go to sporting event

4. Weekend getaway

5. Couples massages

This date night jar helps keep our love strong and lets us work and build on our relationship even more. I have realized even though I am married now, date nights are even more important than when we were just dating. I love our date nights and spending time with my sweet husband!

Hello! I am Kacey Cavanaugh and I am so excited to start this blog with two of my best friends, Alesha and Amanda. I am a senior at the University of North Georgia, where I am pursuing my degree in Early Childhood Education. I have always dreamed about being a teacher and I can’t believe my dream is about to come true. I graduate in December and couldn’t be more excited.

Other than school being my main focus, I am a daughter to an amazing set of parents and also a sister to a brother who I look up to everyday. My family means everything to me and I would not be who I am today without them. I am such a daddy’s and momma’s girl.

I am also a wife to a wonderful man named Jonathan. Jonathan and I have been together for five years now but married a year and a half. We met in April of 2008 and started dating in September of the same year. We got engaged in July of 2010 and got married December 3, 2011. Jonathan is a wonderful man who comes from a great family. He completes me and is the love of my life.

When we got married I gained 3 brothers, 2 sisters, 2 nephews, and a niece. I love being part of a big family!! In October 2012 we welcomed my second niece into our family, Callie Willa Cavanaugh. This little girl stole my heart from the day she was born. I am such a proud aunt of all 4 of nieces and nephews and can’t wait till I become a mom one day!!

I also love spending time with my friends. Whether it’s hanging out at home, going shopping, watching movies, whatever it maybe we always have a blast! My friends are my sisters that God forgot to give me!

Another love of mine is softball. I played competitive softball for 14 years. I graduated high school at North Gwinnett High with a scholarship to Columbus State University. Softball has always been a passion of mine and although I do not play anymore I would love to coach one day!

So, of course there a lot more things about me that are not included in this. However, these are the basics! As we write this blog, you will learn more and more about who I am and what I love.

Hi!

I just recently started this blog with two of my best friends. We came up with the name, “Spreading the Love,” because we want to share the love of things that we enjoy in life. Let me begin by telling you a little about myself….

My name is Alesha! I am currently a senior at the University of North Georgia. Go Nighthawks! I will be graduating in December with my bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. I am looking forward to student teaching this fall, and finally pursuing my dream of becoming a teacher.

I would not be where I am today, if it was not for my savior Jesus Christ. I am a Christian, and I am not ashamed to admit it.

I also would not be here today, if it was not for my wonderful, loving parents. My mom is one of my biggest fans. She is such a wonderful woman.

My dad is such a sweet, loving and hardworking man. He has set such high standards for the next man that sweeps me off my feet.

Speaking of the man that sweeps me off my feet, I have finally met him.

His name is Clint. He is everything to me! We have been dating for five years, and I have never been happier. He is my true soul mate, and I cannot wait to see what God has in store for us in the future.

I also have one sister, one stepsister, and a step-dad in which I love dearly. My sister’s name is Ashley. She is such a wonderful person, and she has taught me so much throughout my life.

My stepsister, Kortni, has been part of my life for several years now. She is such an incredible person, that has taught me as well. She is also expecting her first child this fall. I am super excited about having my first nephew, Noah.

My step-dad is such a hardworking man that has supported me throughout most of my life.

My family, boyfriend, and school are a large part of my life. However, I also enjoy crafting, sewing, reading, hanging out with friends, and much more. You will learn more about me as I write this blog.
