The American Pavilion's upcoming programs: LA Intensive, Venice Intensive, Toronto Intensive

It is that time of the year again and the American Pavilion is gearing up for our exciting summer and fall programs. Our application deadlines have just been extended and your students now have until June 15th to apply for our 2011 L.A. Intensive and until July 31st to apply for the Venice Intensive at the Venice International Film Festival and the Toronto Intensive at the Toronto International Film Festival.

• L.A. Intensive is a 9-day educational summer program that takes place in Los Angeles each August. Now in its eleventh year, the program is designed to provide a transition into the entertainment industry. Each day of the program is fully scheduled with workshops, private tours, panel discussions, screenings, tapings, interactive demonstrations and special events.

• The Venice Intensive is a 15-day work-study optional program that takes place at the Venice International Film Festival each year. Now in its fifth year, the Venice Intensive offers great opportunities to young Filmmakers to experience the Festival and make important contacts. In addition to Festival screenings, participants enjoy intimate round tables and witness first hand how the film P.R. and publicity machine works. The program is limited to only 30 students who share housing in traditional Venetian apartments.

• The Toronto Intensive Student Program at The Toronto International Film Festival, launched in 2010 offers a unique opportunity for emerging filmmakers and students with an interest in the entertainment industry to participate in the Toronto International Film Festival. The Toronto Intensive is an internship/educational program. Accepted students stay in Toronto for the duration of the Festival and complete an internship with an entertainment industry company doing business at the Festival. Students will also participate in educational workshops, seminars, roundtable discussions programmed by SAGIndie as well as Festival screenings and official events.

I hope you will take a moment and pass this information on to your interested students, all three of these programs are extraordinary opportunities for students interested in all aspects of the film industry.

Storyboard TV launches Third Competition

for Television Writers

New York, March 1 – Storyboard TV, an online community of scriptwriters, television producers, and TV enthusiasts, launches its second competition today awarding a $2,000 prize to the writer with the best pilot for a one-hour or half-hour television show.

At storyboardtv.com, writers can share TV scripts for original shows with their potential audience members, while soliciting feedback and gauging enthusiasm for their story. Membership to Storyboard TV is free and open to all, and all members will be able to read, critique, and ultimately vote for their favorite TV scripts.

Entries for this competition will be accepted from today through August 25, 2011. After a month of peer review, ten semi-finalist scripts will be forwarded to a panel of writers, producers, and directors which will in turn narrow the field to three.

The winner of the script competition, announced on August 8, 2011, will be chosen from the finalists exclusively by Storyboard TV’s membership community.

All semi-finalist scripts from our previous competitions can be found in the Archivesection of our website.

The Best Shorts Competition is not a traditional film festival; rather it is an avant-garde worldwide competition that strives to give talented directors, producers, actors, members of the creative team and new media creators the positive exposure they deserve. It discovers and honors the achievements of filmmakers worldwide who produce high quality shorts and new media. It promotes the award winners through press releases, media/distribution outlets and via blogging.

Its filmmaker-to-filmmaker neighborhood screening initiative creates viewers and builds community among the participating filmmakers. Those filmmakers who win Best Shorts laurels will be invited to participate in compilation DVDs and organize local events to screen not only their own films but also the films of other Best Shorts winning filmmakers. For example, imagine the thrill of filmmakers from France, India, China, Brazil and the United States joining together in a compilation DVD and showing their shorts in their hometowns around the world. After obtaining written consent from the filmmakers, the Best Shorts Competition will create the compilations and provide the instructions for holding neighborhood screening events. Participating filmmakers will be asked to share in the costs of creating and duplicating the complication DVDs, but costs can be recaptured as the filmmakers will each receive a supply of the DVDs which can then be sold at the screening events and via their websites.

The Best Shorts Competition offers a number of prizes including the following.

$1000 Cash Award: Once each year one $1,000 cash prize is awarded to one Best Shorts winner selected from among all the Best Shorts winners in all from the past twelve months.

Annual Humanitarian Award: Each year, Best Shorts grants its Humanitarian Award to one filmmaker for dedicated service to social justice, humanitarian causes or environmental issues.

$1500 Studio Award: Random Original Productions, Official Production Company of Best Shorts, is generously providing a production house opportunity valued at up to $1,500 to one Best Shorts winning filmmaker each year. The purpose of the sponsorship is to support filmmakers and the larger film community. The lucky filmmaker will receive access to a studio for three, twelve-hour production days. The studio is located in Everett, Washington.

Best of Show/Award of Excellence/Award of Merit: After each seasonal deadline, quality and creativity are celebrated in three levels of awards: Best of Show, Award of Excellence and Award of Merit. Best of Show honors are granted only if worthy productions are discovered. Likewise, no more than 15% of entries are granted Awards of Excellence. Notable artistic and technical productions are recognized at the Award of Merit award level. Judging results letters will be sent by regular mail about four to six weeks after the final deadline to all participants, i.e., to those who were granted awards and those who were not granted awards. Free digital downloads of Best Shorts laurels will be made available to all winners. Winners may also order a Best Shorts statuette for an additional cost of $295 per statuette. Shipping is free within the United States but international orders will be charged a $50 shipping fee. UCLA Shorttakes Film Festival

On behalf of UCLA's Campus Events Commission, we'd like to invite your students to participate in our 17th Annual Shorttakes Student Film Festival. The event showcases short films made by students from all over the nation.

Students are welcome to submit films (live-action or animation/digital media) under 10 minutes long. Multiple submissions are allowed, but each requires its own submission fee. Early submission is due on April 7th and is $15 per entry. Late submission is due on April 14th and is $20 per entry.

UCLA’s Campus Events Commission will select the top submissions to be sent to a judging panel made up of entertainment industry professionals. These judges will select the winners for "Best In Show", among other categories, and students have chances to win other awards as selected by the audience and Campus Events Commission. Some recent Shorttakes judges include: Adam Rifkin (writer, Mousehunt and Small Soldiers), Daniel Chun (writer, The Simpsons and The Office), Andrew Cohen and Brendan O’Brien (producers, Funny People), and David X. Cohen (writer/producer, The Simpsons and Futurama), among many other industry figures. Prizes are TBD but will be substantial. Many past winners have gone on to work within the industry, such Shane Acker, the director of 9. The finalists’ films will be screened at our Shorttakes Festival Finale at UCLA on Tuesday, May 24th, 2011.

This is a great opportunity and stepping stone for aspiring filmmakers to show their work. The Aesthetica Short Film Competition 2011 is now open for entries! Its a fantastic opportunity to get your work broadcast to a wider audience and Aesthetica are keen to see entries from both new and established filmmakers who are driving short film forward. The winning film receives a fantastic prize package including:

This is an extra text-only newsletter to tell you about some important developments at MiShorts.

1. Additional distribution/revenue opportunities

We are always on the look-out for new ways of promoting our filmmaker’s work and maximising their earnings, so we are pleased to tell you that we have recently signed distribution agreements with Dailymotion and a major Indian mobile network operator. In both cases the revenue earned will be split 50-50 with film owners/licensees.

The Dailymotion agreement gives us a high-profile ‘partner’ channel on their site and our agreement with the mobile operator means we’ll be the exclusive content provider for a new India-wide short film portal they’re launching. As Dailymotion currently has 90 million visitors per month and the mobile operator has 130 million subscribers, these agreements will significantly increase the reach of our filmmaker’s work and the sales commission we pay them.

2. Change to our Terms & Conditions

In order for us to exploit these new distribution opportunities and others still in the pipeline, we have changed clause 7.7.1 of our Terms & Conditions to the following:

“In full consideration of the rights granted to MiShorts in section three, we undertake to pay Users whose work has been added to our library, a sum not less than 50% of the advertised download price of their film(s), including VAT, each and every time the film is downloaded from our website on a paid-for basis, and/or streamed or downloaded from third-party Video-on-Demand services, IPTV networks and mobile portals with whom we have entered into a formal distribution agreement.”

There has never been a better time for indie filmmakers to have their work with MiShorts, and things will get even better as we work towards launching our service into Singapore for the Asian and Chinese markets, and Australia for the Pacific Rim markets, including Japan. Brazil is also in our sites.

3. Raindance

4. WebTV

Today we premiere the first episode of Live In 5, a hit US webTV series. New episodes will be aired on MiShorts, YouTube, Facebook every Wednesday at 8pm US Eastern Standard Time from February 9th, but they can only be downloaded for keeps from our website. We also have the cult 60s crime spoof series, The Ex-Convicts Guide To House Arrest, written by and starring Hollywood actor, Barry Levy, (The X-Files, Flight 93) and co-starring Patrick Gallagher, (Glee, Night at the Museum). Highly recommended.

Our mobile partners are very keen to distribute webTV series, especially comedies and animation, so if you have one to submit, we’d be more than happy to consider it.

Faces of Migration Student Short Film Competition

The Filmmaking Club and the Humanities Center at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA are proud to present this year's Faces of Migration Student Short Film Competition held on Sunday, April 10th. We seek student submissions from across the world that creatively reference the issue of migration.

The Grand Prize is $1000 USD. Second Prize receives $500 USD and Third receives $250 USD. In addition, all selections will be screened throughout the Faces of Migration Festival prior to the feature length movies. Submission deadline is March 20th. The first will be a tutorial on SAG Theatrical Low Budget and New Media Agreements. SAG’s Colorado Branch Executive Director Julie Crane and SAG Council Member Chaz Grundy will walk you through and help simplify the process.

The second part will be a Q&A with industry professionals who have worked with SAG Theatrical Low Budget and New Media Agreements.

2011 Indy Film Fest seeks submissions from around the globe

Festival expects growth in quantity and quality with lower fees, greater reach

INDIANAPOLIS ⎯ Submissions are now open for the 2011 Indianapolis International Film Festival (Indy Film Fest), hosted July 14 – 24 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Filmmakers of all genres, backgrounds and skill-levels are invited to submit their work to this highly-anticipated annual event on the Indianapolis arts scene.

Submission fees have been lowered this year, in an effort to bring even more diverse films into the screening process. Key deadlines in submitting are:

Early Deadline: January 1; $25 fee
Regular Deadline: March 1; $30 fee
Late Deadline: March 15; $40 fee

Feature length films in any category are eligible for the festival’s $1,000 Grand Jury prize; the 2010 Grand Jury Prize winning film was Michael Weithorn’s A LITTLE HELP, starring Jenna Fischer. Other films featured in 2010 include Academy Award-winning short film THE NEW TENANTS and opening night film BARRY MUNDAY, which hit theaters this October. Films interested in submitting must utilize Withoutabox.com (http://www.withoutabox.com/login/4101), the online tool connecting festivals and filmmakers.

Craig Mince, Indy Film Fest President, said of the open submissions, "This is going to be a very exciting year for the Festival and for our audience. There are so many great films and filmmakers that we want the people of Indiana to experience, so we are making it more affordable than ever to submit a film this year."

Films chosen for the 2011 festival will be featured in three major categories:

American Spectrum, celebrating the best in American cinema. Films must be produced or co-produced by at least one (1) U.S. citizen.
World Cinema, recognizing the best in international works. These films may be co-produced by a U.S. citizen(s) but at least one (1) producer must be a citizen of a nation other than the U.S
Matter of Fact, reserved for thought-provoking documentary filmmaking from the U.S. or around the world.

Lisa Trifone, Festival Managing Director, notes that “we're evolving as a festival, and this year we want to push the envelope. After seven successful years, we’ve proven ourselves to be a viable film festival in Indianapolis where filmmakers are eager to feature their work.”

Contest for documentary short films about artistic achievements (max. duration: 10 min)
The films should be intended to document, to inform, to inspire and to encourage the enthusiasm and understanding of art. Every artistic field is included, from the contemporary avant-garde to the preservation of traditions and the cultural heritage. Also welcome are short versions of older full length documentaries!

We're looking for documentaries of art and artists, which may include artistic elements. Currently we are not looking for films in the sense of video art or self-expression by artists.

Participants must register in person at The MockSides Ultimate Filmmaker Registration & Meet-Up.

WHEN:
Friday January 21st. 5:00 - 10:00

REGISTRATION: The registration fee for this contest is $50.00 per team, which includes 2 Tickets to the MockSide UFC Screening and Award Ceremony.

PHASE 2: YOUR PRODUCTION
THE "WRITE AROUND" FORMAT: THIS IS HOW IT'S WORKS:
At the designated time, the contest will officially begin. Registered Filmmakers (Contestants) will have 72 hours in which to make a short film between 6 and 8 minutes in length. The contestants must have their film shot, edited and handed in by the end of the designated time period according to submission requirements.

WHAT'S THE CHALLENGE?
When the contest clock begins, a script (short scene) will be posted on our CONTEST page at www.mocksides.com (downloadable PDF) and a copy will also be sent to the filmmakers. Every Contestant must incorporate that scene in their short-film, they must shoot the scene as it is written. The assigned script will have specific instructions the filmmaker must follow, however, there will be some room for interpretation and the contestant must build a story around that scene justifying all of the characters and events.

THE CHALLENGE BEGINS:
Thursday, January 27 at 7:00p.m. (Colorado Mountain Time) the contest clock officially begins.

THE CHALLENGE ENDS:
Sunday, January 30th at precisely 7:00p.m. (Colorado Mountain Time)
The contestants must have their completed film HANDED IN to the organizers at DS StudioWorks.
Any Contestant who is late will be disqualified.

PHASE 3:
JUDGING PERIOD COMMENCES:
Our panel of industry judges will then begin scoring each qualified film to narrow-down the top finalists (no more than 10). Regardless of who makes the final round, each filmmaker will receive their judging score via email.

PHASE 4
THE MOCKSIDES UFC SCREENING & AWARDS CERMONY:
The top finalists will have their work shown where the Winner will be announced. Sorry, no one get's tipped-off as to who the top finalists are. You just have to show up to find out.

WHEN:
Friday February 4th at 7:00pm

WHERE:
The BUG Theater, 3654 Navajo Street, Denver, CO 80211-3037 TICKETS: $10 at the door while seating lasts.

Regardless of who makes the finals, all qualified films will be posted for screening on our website after the contest, which has already begun to gain a national and international audience.
