January sewing projects

Last year I've been very very lazy to blog in general. I was busy with work spending lots of time on business trips, busy with studying Japanese (sigh...), busy with my fashion school, flamenco classes and yoga. This year, I will drop flamenco and business trips and hope to use this time sewing, studying and blogging. In fact, I feel that as you describe your work, it makes you think more in details about it at the same time. Good practice for me to do.

So far, I have got loads of fabric in my stash, and tons of projects that I'd like to work on in the near future. In January I'd like to finish most of the following:

Home made lip balm

Inspired by Tidytipsy, I also decided to make my own lip balm. It sounds like lots of fun, very quick and can be a nice present as well.

Because I love colors, I got these amazing colorful lip balm tubes on eBay. The seller provides FREE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING! Ingredients you can find in most drug stores or organic food shops. I got mine from Japanese online drug store - kenko.com.

Before starting to create my own, I looked up for several recipes to get an idea first. The main ingredients are

beeswax (it can also be candelilla)
any essential oil (coconut/jojoba/macadamia/rose/almond)
cocoa/shea butter
vitamin E
colorants

I used beeswas, jojoba oil, olive oil & cocoa butter without any colorants.

Everything was measured by eye, but I tried to keep the proportion of liquid/solid 40%/60%. But as I tried the end result, I think I should've done it 35% of liquid (essential oils) and 65% of solid (beeswax & cocoa butter). Also I'd like to play with more ingredients and using different product combinations.

First, I melted cocoa butter and beeswax in the boiling water bath

Then I added jojoba and olive oil.

Lastly, using pipette I poured the liquid into lip balm tubes, 15 in total. Ready to go as New Year's presents for my friends! They will be impressed =)

If you want some color in your lip balm, simply add a little bit of your usual lipstick during the melting process.

New home for glasses

I wanted to do some embroidery for a while. When I saw this book in a book-store in Tokyo, I wanted to stop doing everything and start many embroidery projects. I imagined coin purses, bags, dresses and shirts covered with little motifs from this book. But it did not go as I wanted to. With my crazy schedule in Tokyo and couple business trip, this book has been sitting on the shelf over 6 weeks.

Then yesterday I made this case for my glasses. In total it took me few hours. But for somebody who's experienced in embroidery that would be probably super fast. I picked up a autumn motif, inspired by weather, air and leaves turning bright colors. For the lining, I selected naniIro fabric to make a "spring" contrast to the main pattern of the case.

That's the result

I had lots of fun making the case. Last time I used to do embroidery was 15+ years. All my skills from the past took some time to resurrect. To be honest, I am not very satisfied with the quality of it, but my next embroidery will be better, I can feel it :)

My grandmother was a tailor. I did not spend much time with her because I did not like her very much. She was cold, rarely showed her feelings, she did not have a landline in her house (which was very important for me as a child) and very religious (what scared me off). Her ultimate goal was to baptize me to catholicism. On rare occasions I spent with her I would poke my nose into hew sewing. Hes Singer sewing machine looks exactly like on the picture above.

I used to like handycrafting since little age (mainly knitting and cross-stitching). Suddenly few years ago I started remaking my clothes, adding trims and pockets and flowers. Then I bought a sewing machine and I could not stop. Since April I study in the fashion school on evening courses and hope to make sewing my daily bread one day. From now on I'll post some of the sewing or hand made projects too.

I've been living in Tokyo now about 15 months. Work and learning Japanese takes so much time that I totally abandoned blogging. What a shame! Tokyo is probably #1 fashion place in the world! I should document more about it. By the way, I have another blog about my Japanese life which I also kind of abandoned myjapandotcom.com.

What always surprised me on Japanese fashion scene is incredible manicures. Local girls just love it, some can't live without it! Bright and daring colors, Swarovski stones, flowers!

I asked my fashionable colleagues "to pose" their nails for me :)

At last, spring has come! The sun is not only shining, but is kinda warming us out. I want to wear dresses, skits. I want to accessorize myself, starting from my feet! I've been living in Singapore for two months already. It's time to return to Dublin. Oh no! I so don't want to :(

Times flies, you don't even notice. At least you are wearing watch, like Swatch, for example. I remember my first Swatch, back in 1998. Birthday present from my first boyfriend. I've got the collection watch which was stolen two years later. After that I had (well, I still have) 3 Swatch watches. But today I could not resist and have bought the 4th one: Germaholic.

Swatch for me represents the quality and the originality. How many friends I've contaminated with the Swatch-mania. In their new collection there are many cute models. If I don't change my mind then next week I'd get an extra one?? I'd be wearing AHHH! whenever I'm in a comics mood. Run and check out your nearest Swatch store. Which watch is likely to become your?

Autumn new outfits

I love doing some creative stuff even though it's only something small that no one appreciates. For example, matching & fitting clothes. I have one more addiction besides shoes: bags. But get an original one is not easy. In brand shops bags follow the fashion flow, the same like cloths. Honestly speaking, I don't feel comfortable the nowadays fashion styles. I'd like to find something original, that nobody else in this word possesses. Well, you also dream about the same, don't you). I am so pleased to see some bright colors on the background of the gray city. I discovered UNIQLO on one of my trips to London. Those bright and cheerful colors you don't always get even in Benetton. Well, the two models that accompany this post are not super bright but check the website! In addition to uni-color clothes Uniqlo periodically produces designer collections. If you have friends or relatives in UK, US, Singapore, South Korea, China, Japan or Hong Kong use your connection to order nice stuff. It's been a while since I made entries to my blog. Partly because of my long journey and partly because of the excavations in my life. Well, I am back from the trip and the excavations, say, are all coming to a certain logical end.

It was summer in Dublin. Who would have thought! Real summer outside, with its smells, colors and clothing. But will it stay long? Weather probably won't stay like this forever, but the clothes may for a while.

I'll start those summer posts from shoes. First of all, because I am crazy about shoes, and second, if one feels comfortable in shoes, then you might feel the same in any clothes. The theory is based on personal experience. It's fine if you don't agree though :) But this is my blog at the end, and so I can just develop theories.

Yes, I love comfortable shoes and I buy them massively on a regular basis. Not like Carrie Bradshaw, and not for the same price. Last time I've got four pairs at a time, three of which wer Converse. Here they are my new sneakers:

I wear them with almost everything: skirts, dresses, jeans, shorts. And mix them with every color. They go well with my casual stuff as well as with more stylish things. Recently, I wore them with a long sort of cocktail dress. Looked quite decent. To put a drop of less "converseness" of my shoes preferences, I came across one nice website with super cool shoes for all occasions. Site is American, but they deliver shoes sold worldwide. I love creative people, things, ideas. Can't imagine my life without creativity. Some days ago I came across this creative project Motxo Design. The things made by François Royer, a French designer, must be his reaction to a culture of consuming and waste. His functional art like lamps and tables are recycled from the oil barrels. On my opinion, those things are stunning. Creation of an urban guy with a taste to industrial and environmental design. A typical piece goes from € 300 to € 500.
