OFID (The OPEC Fund for International Development) is pleased to announce that qualified undergraduate students are welcome to apply for the OFID Scholarship 2009/10. The OFID Scholarship will be awarded to support an undergraduate student from any developing country, to pursue higher education in a relevant field of development, in any recognized university/college in the world. Through its scholarship scheme, OFID aims to help highly motivated, highly driven individuals overcome one of the biggest challenges to their careers – the cost of advanced professional or graduate training. The winner of the OFID Award will receive a scholarship of up to US$100,000 The funds will be spread over a maximum of two years, toward the completion of a Master’s degree, or its equivalent, at an accredited educational institution, starting in the autumn of the academic year 2009/10.

Eligibility
To be eligible the candidate must meet ALL of the following criteria: :
Must be between the ages of 23-32 at the time of submitting his/her application.
Must be a graduating student with a Baccalaureate from a four-year, accredited college/university, or its equivalent.
Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 rating system, or its equivalent.
Must be matriculated at an accredited university for the upcoming academic year starting September 2009, and must maintain full-time status for the duration of the Masters Degree.
Must be a national of a developing country (please see list of eligible countries)
Must select a subject of study that pertains to OFID’s core mission, such as: economics of development (poverty reduction, energy and sustainable development), environment (desertification), or other related science and technology fields.

Applicants are responsible for gathering and submitting all necessary information. Applications will be evaluated based on the information provided. Therefore, all questions should be answered as thoroughly as possible. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Once an application has been submitted, no changes will be allowed on it.

Disbursement of the Scholarship Fund
The terms and conditions of payment will be determined in coordination with the student upon his/her selection in accordance with the following guidelines:
The tuition fees, including any supplementary examination fees, as may be required by the academic institution, will be paid by OFID directly to the academic institution. Health insurance will be paid in accordance with the institution’s own standard medical scheme.
A monthly allowance to cover living expenses, books and accommodation, will be transferred to the student’s own personal bank account on a quarterly basis.
Prior to the start of his/her first year studies, the student will be paid a relocation grant, equal to two-month allowance. OFID will also pay for travel costs from the nearest airport to the student’s place of residence, to the nearest airport to the chosen place of study. Upon completion of the studies, the student will be paid the cost of one-way air ticket to his/her home country.

A scanned copy of the last university degree or certificate.
A scanned letter of acceptance from your chosen educational institution, confirming your admission, subject of study and duration of the Master’s degree program (must not exceed a maximum of two years).
A proof of meeting any prerequisites, including language proficiency.
A short essay – of about 250 words in English – giving reasons for applying for OFID’s scholarship, explaining your educational goals, and clearly describing how you will use the experience gained from your Masters degree studies to help in the development of your home country.
Two letters of recommendation from professors and/or lecturers at applicant’s present university.

Atlas is now accepting applications for it’s 2009 Think Tank MBA Program. This program will take place on August 9-21, 2009. Please complete and submit this form (click here) by March 16, 2009. You will receive a confirmation message from Atlas when your application has been received. You will be notified by April 15, 2009 if you have been selected as a participant for this year’s program. Upon selection, you will have until May 1, 2009 to send in your non-refundable registration fee as well as your proof of travel itinerary and visas (if necessary).

Program Details
The great insight of Atlas’s founder, Sir Antony Fisher, concerned the need to apply sound business practices to the task of developing and disseminating sound public policies.

Members of the freedom movement agree that “ideas have consequences.” It is therefore imperative to spread the ideas of liberty. But spreading those ideas effectively requires strong, effectively-managed institutions that can play a long-term role in their respective societies.

This is why Atlas concentrates not only on increasing the number of “intellectual entrepreneurs” who desire to improve the climate of ideas through research and education, but also on improving their ability to lead effective think tanks.
Throughout Atlas’s history, we have hosted resident fellows who take advantage of their time at our offices to learn how think tanks work.

We have sponsored hundreds of workshops related to think tank management, and we have helped thousands upon thousands of visitors and correspondents who have sought our advice on aspects of think tank management. And in 2008, we launched the Think Tank MBA program as our most comprehensive training program for training young intellectual entrepreneurs.

Through individual and group work, lectures, think tank visits and networking events, Think Tank MBA participants receive training in business plans, marketing/communications, program planning and evaluation, fundraising, management and finance/accounting. Atlas’s goal is to provide each participant with
a well developed think tank business plans that incorporated elements of program modules,
increased knowledge of organizational management, and
a network of like-minded partners from the Atlas global think tank network.

The 2009 program will also include selected excursions. All training sessions and excursions are mandatory for participants.

Our ideal candidates for the 2009 Atlas MBA program will be intellectual entrepreneurs running a startup think tank, or promising young staff at existing think tanks who could be future leaders within the think tank movement.

As a special bonus, early applicants may be eligible for special sponsorship to attend the Atlas Experience which will take place from August 6-8, 2009. The Atlas Experience is a relaxing, intellectually stimulating event that will be held at Niagara-on-the Lake, Ontario, just prior to the start of the Atlas’s MBA program. The Atlas Experience brings together lovers of freedom, lovers for enlightening lectures, fine dining, intimate economic salons and refreshing local tours.

When & Where: The next MBA course will be held at Hyatt Fair Lakes in Fairfax, Virginia from August 9-21, 2009.
Registration Fee: The non-refundable registration fee is $500/person. This fee covers:

European Master in Informatics (EuMi)

The University of Trento (Italy), the RWTH Aachen University (Germany), and the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) are offering a two-year Joint Masters Programme, named European Master in Informatics (EuMI). The objective is to educate professionals who will understand advanced techniques, tools, and methodologies in the field of Computer Science, and who will be able to put this knowledge into practice in key domains of application. In particular, EuMI offers three areas of specialisation in Net-Centric Informatics, Life-Science Informatics, and Embedded Systems Informatics. These are application domains that, being emergent, rapidly evolving, and of growing impact on the society, require specialised competencies not covered by more traditional degree programmes.

For each area of specialisation, a joint curriculum is defined which involves two Universities. The student undertaking the Erasmus Mundus Master’s curriculum will visit both Universities, taking courses focussing on advanced topics in theoretical and practical Computer Science within a selected area of specialisation. Courses are taught in English. Students will also have the opportunity to take courses on the culture and language of the visited European countries. At the end of the programme, a Master’s Thesis will be prepared on a research topic jointly selected with the two host Universities.

On the successful completion of EuMi, students will be awarded a Master of Informatics and will receive a degree from each of the Universities where they spent a part of their study: a “Laurea Specialistica in Informatica” (“Specialist Degree in Computer Science”) by the University of Trento,
a “Master of Science in Computer Science” by RWTH Aachen University, a “Master of Science in Informatics” by the University of Edinburgh.

The EuMI programme is intended for a small number of top-level international students. In order to guarantee a ratio between the teachers involved in the Joint Master and the EuMI students of close to one, a maximum of 30 students per year will be selected. Candidates should have a solid background in basic Computer Science disciplines and a keen interest in the fields of Net-Centric Informatics, Embedded Systems Informatics, or Life-Sciences Informatics. Prerequisites are a first level degree in Computer Science or closely-related disciplines and a fluent knowledge of spoken and written English.

Admission requirements and selection criteria

Students are accepted in the program regardless of sex, age, or nationality. A student to be accepted must fulfil the following requirements:
A first level (at least three years) degree in Computer Science or closely related disciplines, awarded by an internationally recognised university-level institution.
Students who have not yet completed their first degree, but expect to graduate before August 31 2008 can apply provided that they will obtain the degree and supply the EuMI secretariat with a degree certificate by August 31.
Fluent written and spoken English knowledge, certified by either an IELTS score of at least 6.0, a TOEFL score of at least 550 (paper-based) / 217 (computer-based) / 81 (internet-based) or CAE score of at least C; students with higher English scores (IELTS 6.5; TOEFL 580 / 237 / 88; CAE B or A) will be preferred. Student who have not yet a certificate, but who expect to have it before August 31, can apply to EuMI. If selected, the admission will be conditional on the receipt of the English certificate by EuMI before August 31.

Applicants who are Nationals of the exonerated Countries (please see list in the FAQ ) do not have to submit a language certificates. IF YOU ARE NOT IN THE EXONERATED LIST, YOU NEED AN OFFICIAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE CERTIFICATE, EVEN IN CASE OF ENGLISH SPEAKING ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES.

2009-2010 Graduate Scholarship Application
Master’s Degree, Educational Specialist Degree, and Post-Baccalaureate Certification Students

All scholarship applications from prospective students received after the close of business on 2/14/2009 will be considered as late applications. Marywood University will review these applications on a discretionary, funds-available basis. By University policy we cannot accept late scholarship applications from current students and prospective international students.

Awards will be made on the basis of three factors: academic promise, normally represented by a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00 or a graduate GPA of 3.50; professional focus and commitment; and financial need (required for specific scholarships).

File a complete admissions application. It is fully expected that each prospective student who is a scholarship applicant will have a complete admissions application on file with the Office of Graduate Admissions by February 14, 2009. The admissions application provides the supporting documentation necessary to evaluate a scholarship application.

Complete the scholarship application electronically. The scholarship application itself is on a secure server. You must press “yes” if your browser asks you if you wish to display secure items, otherwise Marywood University will not receive any of the information you type on the application upon submission.

If you declare full-time status on the scholarship application, enrollment in nine or more credits in the Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 semesters or what your graduate department defines as full enrollment in structured programs, and are awarded a full-time status scholarship and enroll for less than full-time registration in either of these semesters your scholarship award will be reduced.

If you declare part-time status on your scholarship application, The Committee on Graduate Scholarships expects part-time status students who are scholarship recipients to enroll in and maintain at least six credits in the fall semester and at least six credits in the spring semester. Part-time status scholarship recipients who fail to meet this requirement in a semester will have their scholarships rescinded for that semester.

Email a scholarship essay as a Microsoft Word document. Please type an essay (300-500 words) clarifying the relationship between your life-goals and graduate education at Marywood. Your essay will also be judged on depth of expression and use of the English language. Your essay must clearly address the following areas:
Describe your professional work background and experience.
Describe your community leadership activities. Indicate if a volunteer activity.
Describe any commendations and appreciation awards as well as undergraduate and graduate academic awards and honors.
Describe any special projects, demonstrations, workshops, recitals, exhibits, or whatever may be appropriate to your area to indicate your abilities and interests.
What are your short and long range career goals and objectives?
What attracted you to your Marywood program as a vehicle for achieving your goals?

Marywood University undergraduate students who are enrolled in formal five-year programs are automatically eligible for at least forty percent of their undergraduate merit award or higher for their fifth year of study at the graduate level provided they are admitted to the master’s level by their academic department.

Neither scholarship nor assistantship awards are renewed automatically each year. It is the responsibility of the student to reapply each academic year.
