I finished this painting a while ago, just haven't posted the final image. The painting was completed in oil paints on a black primed canvas and a touch of 'liquid mirror' acrylic paint for some of the details.

Solitude of My Dreams - Work in Progress Step 2

The background was a little too purple for me, so tonight I added some subtle washes of blue just to tone it down a bit. Its still a little more blue in real life. For some reason, my scanner is picking up the purples a little too much yet.

Solitude of My Dreams - Loon Work in Progress

It has been a while since I've painted a loon and I was truely captured by a photograph posted by Alan and Elaine Wilson over at Nature's Pics Online that I just had to give it a go. My background turned out a little more purple than I imagined, but I think I'll work on the loon for a while to see if the purple grows on me. Otherwise, I'll add a few washes of blue to tone it down a little.

Ice Crystals - Work in Progress

Was a busy day today and I did not get any work done on the hummingbird painting. So, I am going to post the startings on a new oil painting that I began during the holidays. It is based on a photograph I took last year after the ice storm of 2013. I have so many beautiful pictures of the ice crystals against the blue sky that I had a hard time deciding which one to paint.

So, I didn't get as much done as I hoped on this little guy tonight... I did manage to work a little on the leaves on the right side so I thought I would post what I did get done. Leaves (and flowers) are my nemesis and someday I will master them. Until then, I will muddle along. They do say "practice makes perfect".

I've started another new one... though I am struggling with is a little. I just don't think I got the shading right on the body, though it doesn't look all that bad on my computer. I hope to have the bird completed tomorrow and then I can begin the leaves and flowers on the right side.

Bluebird Waiting

Finished! Though, I had a terrible time trying to get an accurate photo of this one. This one is a bite to "contrasty" and bright, but it is fairly accurate. I'll try to take a better photo later when my camera has charged a little.

Its hard to get a good scan of this one, so I will have to try to take a picture of it tomorrow in the light. I'm almost finished the bluebird and then a few little areas to finish on the background and the berries he is standing on. Hopefully, when I post the update to this painting tomorrow, he will be finished.

Got the Blues - Marble Painting

There are times when I have many paintings on the go.... This is one of those times. I've been going through my 'to finish' pile when I came across this one... it is shiney and made of glass! I'm not sure if it is completely done as I am not entirely satisfied with the shadows in the background. I'll mull over it for the next day or so before I am completely ready to call it done.

Lil'Bunting

I found this painting particularly difficult to get an accurate scan of for some reason, so I am posting a picture of it from my camera.... this is a pretty good likeness to the actual colours of the bird and of the paper. The Kahdi paper has some absolutely wonderful texture to it... but that also makes is somewhat tricky to paint on. Wet-on-wet washes, if done too many times, mucks up the texture so I had to be extra careful not too do too many. Which is OK since the texture makes for some wonder dry brush textures.

Trying some new paper again today, this one isn't as bright white as the last paper I tried, but... it is a nice paper to work with. It has a bit more of a pronounced texture though I think that adds to the character. I tried it many years ago when I was first playing seriously with watercolours but was never able to find it available in Canada after that. I was hoping to try some Twinrocker paper, but haven't been able to find a distributor who ships to Canada.

I've finally finished this one... well, unless I see any little detail that I need to tweak. I'm happy with the subtle detail, but it is that subtle detail that made it very difficult to photograph and scan. I'll try again tomorrow with better light.

I received a few days ago a sample pack of watercolour paper from Garzapapel (www.garzapapel.com) and I just had to give it a try. The paper is advertised as being 100% recycled cotton and archival... to the touch, it is so soft and has the most wonderful texture to it. It didn't take me long to figure out what I wanted to paint on it...
