Something for the Big and Little Guy's (Tutorial)

So, I've always wanted to do a refashion for my hubby, but nothing really came to me until now. Here I took a simple hooded sweatshirt and transformed it into this:

Not much different, but a change none the less. Good news??? My husband loves it! I was a bit taken aback by how much he liked it. He was happy I finally did something for him, lol. Now, if only I had a little boy to make a matching one for....

Before:

What you need:
-A hooded sweatshirt
-2 to 3 buttons
-Elastic (think broken hair elastics, elastic that holds new shoes together, sewing elastic, etc).
-Seam ripper
-Scissors
-Measuring Tape

How to do it:

1. Grab your seam ripper and take off the hood. (It's really not that time consuming).

2. Take your measuring tape and measure around the neck to determine a rough estimate. Go higher than lower in the measurement to be on the safe side.

3. Take the hood and cut a piece from it that will become the new collar part. I just made mine 2 or 3 inches longer than the measurement around the neck opening. For the height, double the height that you desire. My piece totaled 26" x 5".

4. Fold the piece in half long ways, right sides facing, and cut at an angle on one end. You want the cut angling in towards the side that is open. My picture shows if the fabric was facing wrong sides together.

5. To make the other side even, fold in half and match up ends to cut at the same angle.

6. Sew the side angles together and turn right side out.

7. Next, cut a square/rectangle piece. This is the part that will make it look like there's a flap. I cut mine to be 5.5"x 5".

8. Pin three sides down and sew. Leave the top unsewn because the collar will cover that up.

9. Pin the square/rectangle piece onto the middle top of the shirt and sew on. Just sew right over the sewing you just did to hold the sides down.

10. Now, pin on the collar, with the top facing down. You want it to overlap a little. If you don't like how it overlaps, take off and cut some off or recut a piece if not long enough.

11. Sew the collar and shirt together.

12. Flip the collar up and push the seam down. Sew around the neckline to sew down the seam.

13. Cut 2 to 3 small squares (depending on how many buttons you want to add. I did two) and cut 2-3 small pieces of elastic (mine were 3 inches long each). You will just have to play with the length of the elastic. I just placed my buttons where I wanted them and figured how much I would need to stretch from the square to the button for it to work.

14. Place the square on the side of the square/rectangle with the elastic underneath and pin.

15. Sew around the small squares (I went over the elastic side a few times to make sure it would hold good) and then sew an x in the middle of the small squares if desired. I like doing it for looks and for the extra hold.

16. Determine where you want the buttons and hand sew them on. Put the elastic around them once on and you are all done!

Funny Faces

My daughter has a sense of humor and one thing that gets her going are funny faces. She might notice a funny face on a sticker, halloween decorations, etc. and will just laugh and talk about the funny face. She was in need of some eggs for her kitchen, so I decided to give them funny faces. They were just too plain without them!

For the eggs, I just cut two oval shaped pieces from fleece, sewed them together leaving an opening for turning, turned them right side out, stuffed them, and then stitched the opening shut.
For the faces, I crocheted the circle then embroidered or used felt for the facial features. Then I just glued them on.

Crocheted Flat Circles How To:
-ch 2
-sc in 1st ch 4x's
-2 sc in back of each ch around 16 times

I'm also using these eggs to teach her about feelings. As you can tell, some are happy, sad, surprised, etc.

Oh man, my daughter just won't sit still for hardly anything these days! Here are some pictures of her in some new dresses I made using a Lil Blue Boo pattern by Ashley. It's the Sienna dress.
I have to say I love this pattern! It's super quick to make too with so many possibilities! I highly recommend you get this pattern if you sew for a little girl in your life. It's so well written and professional. Ashley rocks!

*A little trick for long sleeves: I wanted to use the sleeves right off of a size 5t , but they were too long. I didn't want to cut them off and have to hem them, so I just shirred up the sleeves (one up one side and another across on the other. It looks cool and makes the too long sleeve shorter.*

My Little Panda

Last night we went out to this outdoor shopping center to let our little one partake in the giving of candy. She is in love with pandas, so when I asked her what did she want to dress up as, she said panda real quick.

I made the top from two t-shirts and felt for the ears. I had her black leggings already.

I think it came out real cute. She was the only panda I saw :) Our first stop was Anthropologie!

I also made this little panda bucket out of felt too.

We found out she isn't a big clown fan yet.

But, she loved this crazy cat puppet!

A Deadly Combination

I confess that I love baking. Not because it's necessarily fun to make it, but the outcome is so delicious! My wonderful amazing mother sends us care packages from time to time, and this time we got two boxes of stuff to make this wonderful dessert. If you like brownies and peanut butter cookies, this is for you.

It was gone in two days! Now, granted, I did make half in a pumpkin tin for my hubby to take to work and share.

Here is what you need:

-One box of Supreme Brownie Mix and all the ingredients it says to have
-One Peanut Butter Cookie Mix and all the ingredients it says to have

1. Prepare the Supreme Brownie Mix as shown. Pour in pan.
2. Prepare peanut butter cookie mix as shown. Spoon on top of brownie mix- spread out as best as possible.
3. Cook. I went by the brownie bake time.

My Heart is Just Melting

The in-laws are gone, so things are getting back to normal. I have had the itch to sew some things for my little one and whipped this up last night.

I was inspired by this dress at Anthropologie. I absolutely adore how it came out! I made it from two different shirts I had.

I love how the little ruffles bounce when she walks. She just melts my heart. What can I say? I love my daughter and think she is just a cutie.

The only problem I had was I made it too tight at first. I added a triangular panel to the front to help out. Before I did that, she looked like she was going clubbing or something. Not something anyone, let alone a two year old should be wearing :) lol.

I am trying to begin making pajamas for my little girl now. It is just outrageous how expensive pajamas can be, unless you get them on clearance. They are also usually too tight around her wrists and ankles, or way too long. I wanted them to be comfy, so I used t-shirts and knits of mine.

This was my first go at it. I created the pattern myself and went for a faux kimono shirt look. I like this way the best so far, but I did try another method to go for the same look on another one.

Here is the second one I made her. I did it differently, but it came out good. She really likes it because it has flamingos on it. She didn't want to take it off! I made it from a t-shirt I picked up on our anniversary trip. I figured the pj's would be her souvenir.

Then she decided to be her little monkey self and have fun climbing on everything instead of letting me take pictures.

Needless to say, she did fall. But, she didn't hurt anything :)

Had lunch with a wonderful new friend today. Preparing for the the in-laws to come in a few days. Hoping my daughter will actually take a nap today. Visiting more friends in a little bit. Finished a few more Christmas projects:

Monogrammed Tote Bags to hold Christmas gifts. I used the letters I already had cut out from the Rag Quilt Letters. *PS: Found the totes on sale at Micheal's.

Not too inspired on my ornaments for the family ornament exchange. Just dressed up some bears and bunnies. I do love their hats though.

A Hot Scrappy Mess Journal and Tote Tutorial

It's about time I've been able to get back on here and post something. I guess all I can say is that I really have a 2 year old ;). I had made this journal a while back to give to my husband for our anniversary.

He journals a lot when he does Bible studies, quiet time, writes songs, etc, so it's a perfect gift. I'm planning on making a few more for some Christmas presents for those who like to write, draw, journal, etc.

I'm going to share a tutorial for how I made the journal cover. I know journal covers have been done before, but I tried to make one the easiest and fastest way I could. And a sneak peek...

...this is a tote bag I did using the same method. See further down for pics.

Journal Cover:

What you need:
-2 pieces of felt
-Scrap Fabric
-Journal
-2 Buttons (for closure)

-Small pieces of elastic (think about reusing broken hairbands or elastic that holds shoes together when first purchased)

1. Sew two pieces of felt together

2. Place journal on top, so it is in the middle, and measure how much to cut off. Make sure to leave about a half inch or so extra around the bottom and top edge (I forgot to do this and ended up gluing the cover on, but if you sew the flaps, it can be reused on other journals later).

3. Cut off excess felt at the bottom and on the sides if necessary. Make sure to leave enough on the sides to fold over to create the flap.

4. Lay the piece of felt right side up. Take your scraps and just start placing them all over.

5. Pin all the pieces in place.

6. Sew the them all on however you like. I just kind of went crazy with it. No order or anything to the fabric or the sewing. Just did what I felt like. It reminded me of how my child does art. It seems chaotic, since she is only 2, yet comes out really cool anyways.

7. Cut two small pieces of elastic. It should be long enough to be sewn onto one inside flap and come over the journal side to the top to loop onto a button.

8. Pin the elastic where you would like it to hold the journal together at. Sew it on.

9. Then, cover the ends with a small piece of fabric and sew that on.

10. Fold the ends in and place the buttons to line up with the elastic. Take journal cover off and hand sew on the buttons.

11. Place the cover on the journal again and fold the flaps to the inside and sew together at the top and bottom to create the pocket to place the journal cover (unlike what I forgot to do :).

The Tote Bag:

I basically did the same thing. I took a blank tote,

Covered it in scraps.

Pinned them in place.

Sewed them on and added other embellishments (crocheted flowers, felt heart, embroidered stems on the apples).

A Girl and Her Flowers

About two weeks ago, I had this idea to make some kid friendly flowers for my daughter to have to put on her table. This was to add to the effect of setting her play table with all her food and stuff.

So, I did it. I crochet the stems and then stuck a straw in them to give support.
The flowers are just yarn pom poms I made and then sewed on. Simple and sweet.

Now, she has "fresh" flowers to arrange and set her table with. Just like mommy.

My Anniversary Trip Scarf Dress

I was inspired to make this after Burda Style had that scarf dress competition. I found this huge beautiful scarf at AC Moore's for super cheap. I love the colors. Just shirred it some around the top and left a little extra to create a ruffle look (although, I think I'm going to shirr that part too).

I also shirred the waist, but you can't see it under the belt.

Six years ago in the month of October, my husband and I went on our first outing as two people who liked each other (it was kind of like a date, but not; hard to explain :). Then, three years ago, in the month of October, we were married. So, this year to celebrate our 3rd year of marriage and our 6 years of togetherness, we took a trip to Key West. That's where I have been!

It was so nice and relaxing! My parents came down and watched the little one for a few days.

We went to the beach a lot. Although, I should have done more research before going there. It's not really a beachy place. Key West is more about fishing and diving. There were only two small beaches on the island!

It was nice though. We ate a ton of fresh seafood. Mmmmmmmmmm.....

We stayed at a wonderful Bed and Breakfast called the Popular House.

I went crazy when I saw this! How I wish I had all those spools to decorate my house with!

There were lots of quiet happy corners all around to relax in.

I loved all the bright colors and the amazing plants.

We even hung out with the sponge man.

And, we saw lots of cool vintage things. I even bought a neat vintage purse and picture at an antique store (Although, most of the antique stores were very very overpriced. I was fortunate to find my stuff in the bargain bins).

Then, we followed the signs and found our way home. Now it's back to normal again. Lots of craftiness coming up! Stay tuned!

The Octopus Pattern is All Ready

I ended up having four pattern testers since so many of you volunteered! And I'm so glad I did. They all did such a great job! Look at this cute pair of twin octopuses Rae from Sweet Limes made:

"Simply put I am a stay at home mama who spends what quiet and sane time I have sewing for my kids and myself. The odd time I even get something out my husband likes enough to throw on. I'm pretty much the luckiest gal ever because each time I come home from the fabric store I pour out my guilt because of how much I just spent. His response is always the same, "You could be doing something worse with our money." When not in my sewing room I'm either in my kitchen or outside. I love cooking, baking, and eating great food and I love being out in nature hiking, walking, swimming, cycling or what have you. I bring my kids along in all I do. I'm constantly pulling them up huge hills on the bike or pulling measuring spoons out of my kitchen mixtures because I have a one year old on each side that has to help! I just opened up an etsy shop where I hope to sell the odd thing I sew. I've read everywhere that I should treat it as a business, but to be honest, I only want it to be a hobby right now. I have other dreams when it comes to my own business, but they will happen when my business of being the best mama I can be takes up a little less of my time. For now I am busy wrestling with my kiddos, and I wouldn't trade it for the world."

I like how she put her own spin on the mouths. It makes me happy to see how people take someone's idea/pattern and make it their own. Here is a little bit about her. Stop by her place and say hi if you like :)

"I have been blogging for just a little under a year. It started out basically as a diary or journal for me, a way to keep my family and friends up to date with all of our activities being two states away. I grew up in Iowa and now live Indiana. We moved here for my job, which is freelance court reporting. My husband and I are high school sweethearts living the American dream:)

My husband and I are always trying to live life to the fullest and keep busy traveling and experiencing new things. Sometimes I am overambitious and get in a little over my head. This summer I took up road bike riding, training for a marathon, and crafting. Growing up I was always very hands-on and crafty. Once I got to college, though, my gears shifted to work and money. Meet Corey and Lilly the Octopus

I have received another review and pictures from Corey, a pattern tester for the octopus.

Here is what she says about the octopus:

"The Fleece I used was left over from a jumper I made my daughter last winter. I choose a berry sweet flannel to go with it, as I was in the process of making my girl a reversable tote for her dance stuff, and really fell in love with the fushia and green fabric. so....in the photos you'll see that the octopus matches her jumper, and her new tote. :) so fun. She is very pleased. I really enjoyed making this octopus, that my sugar has named, Lilly. It was my first time making a stuffed animal. I am so excited to make more for christmas presents."

Shop Update

O, o, o, do you see some O's???

My daughter calls oreo cookies "O's". I whipped these up two weekends ago, while enjoying a quiet naptime, using this tutorial.

Those quiet times are rare now. She's going through a no nap stage that I hope will stop soon. I still have her take a quiet time, but she doesn't really stay quiet and protests a lot. It's another transition phase in many ways. We have also been completely paci free for a week and a half now! We were still letting her sleep using it, but she was becoming way too clingy to it. So, poof! The pace fairy came and took it away for another baby. She also decided it was time for her to climb out of her crib (I was kind of hoping she never would, like I did, and we could wait a little longer to switch to a toddler bed). So we converted her crib to the toddler bed. Whew. So many changes in such a short amount of time. There's my motherhood big moments of late.

Today's Tutorial: Let's Cowl Something

I'm back again today :) Hope you all have had a wonderful Sunday. I wanted to share with you something I played around with this weekend, cowl necks. I like the look and figured it would be a fun way to refashion t-shirts, tank tops, dresses, etc. Here is what I made for myself and for my daughter:

Mine was made from an too big t-shirt and that is what I will cover in the tutorial. As for my daughter, I just used an old tank top of mine, shortened the shoulder straps and added the cowl (which was part of a scarf I found while thrifting) . Super quick and easy.

Refashion something with a cowl neck???? Add it to the Flickr group to share with us.

What you need:
-Something to add a cowl to

-Material for the cowl (jersey, cotton, one sided, double sided, etc).
-Scissors
-Measuring Tape

1. If using a shirt with a tight neck, you need to cut off some to make the neck larger. I just cut off the ribbed neck from my shirt. I also cut the sleeves off as well.

2. Measure the lenth of the garments neck. That is how long the piece of material should be (plus an amount for seam allowance; I did 1/4") if you do it with a rectangular piece of fabric like I did. If you want more "cowl", you will want to make a trapezoid shape instead. If that is the case, the bottom of the trapezoid will be the neck length, plus seam allowances, and will taper out to your desired length. The height of the material is up to you.

*Now, if you are using a one sided fabric like me, double the height of what you want so you can fold it in half (the print will be seen on both sides). My daughters was double sided so I didn't need to do this.

3. With right sides facing, pin the sides together to create the tube that will go around the neck. Sew across.

4. Turn right side out. If you have one sided fabric, fold in half to create a tube like this:

The bottom will be open.

5. Take the tube and place on the neck, right sides facing. The bottom of the tube will be the side to pin down. Sew together.

6. It will now look like this:

7. Fold down the seam the seam inside

and sew around on the shirt part to hold the seam down.

8. Optional: I then folded the cowl down over the shirt and sewed across the top again because I thought it looked better after trying it on.

Pockets:

I wanted to add some pockets to spice it up some, so I cut 4 pieces in this shape (I used leftovers from the sleeves for the pink part).

Then, I placed them right sides together and sewed all the way around, except leaving a small opening at the top for turning.

I turned them right side out, and then sewed across the top. Then pin the pockets on the shirt.

Sew them on all sides, except for the top. Add a button if you like. I then also shirred a few rows underneath the chest area to bring it in. Oh, and I also folded down the edges of the arm openings and sewed in place for a finished look.

For those of you who I do not contact, you are going on my list and I will contact a few of you at a time for the ones down the road. As of right now, I have 8 more patterns on my to do list (which is always growing). So be on the lookout :) This little girl wants me to make her lots of pretty and fun things, so the more patterns the better!
