New AdWords Templates From an Analytical Standpoint

Google recently launched some new templates for the AdWords Display Ad Builder. These templates cater to rich media and video ad content.

The templates allow advertisers to highlight several different products in one ad, and send them each to different landing pages with unique URLs. If you're not familiar with the templates, watch the following clip:

The templates offer a way to potentially get consumers more engaged with ads, but from an analytics standpoint, they can also curb bounce rate. "Using Google Analytics, you can add tracking parameters to the end of each destination URL, telling you exactly which items users found to be most interesting in the ad," explains Ryan Hayward at the Google Analytics Blog. "This will give you insights on your creative, such as which items to focus on and how prominently they should be featured in the ads."

He gives an example of running ads selling different kinds of shoes with unique landing pages. You can take the analytical data and figure out which shoe is getting clicked on the most, then tailor your campaign to focus more on that particular shoe.

I'd go a bit further and say you could look at the ones that aren't getting clicked on as much and perhaps make adjustments in how they are being presented.

So in other words, the templates are not only giving you a way to sell various items through a single clickable ad, but they can ultimately help you decide which products need more focus, for better or for worse.

AdSense Video Units Get The Axe

Here's a bit of bad news for anyone using AdSense video units: there simply aren't enough of you, and as a result, Google plans to stop pursuing the monetization option. The company's left individuals about one month to land on another strategy.

Yes, starting today, publishers can no longer sign up for a combination of embedded YouTube videos and text ads, and at the end of April, all of the existing stuff will revert to a series of standard clip players.

A post on the Inside AdSense blog explained, "After reviewing our AdSense video units feature . . . we've found that it hasn't had the impact we had hoped for. As a result, we've decided to retire this feature at the end of April so we can focus our resources on other opportunities to help publishers earn from their sites."

Which is fair enough from a couple of angles - Google's under no obligation to pursue this particular approach to advertising. Also, it's not as if the search giant doesn't offer plenty of alternatives.

The news is a little troubling in the face of yesterday's layoff announcement, though. If it looks like Google's backpedaling too much due to the recession, stockholders might lose confidence. A greater sense of unease could spread through the whole search and advertising industry, too.

The Inside AdSense post stated, "We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to develop our products."

Increase Online Video Viewing by 40%

Research conducted by PLYmedia shows that subtitles in online videos increase the the amount of time a user spends watching them by 40%. Furthermore, in a comparison between subtitled videos to identical videos without subtitles, PLYmedia found that the videos with subtitles were watched 91% to completion, compared with 66% to completion for those without subtitles.

As a post at ReelSEO notes, "This is an important indicator for post-roll video advertising as well as for those videos that have a branding message or call to action at the end of the video."

eMarketer says that $6 billion will be spent in the US a year by 2013. There is expected to be tremendous growth each year before that:

So why do the subtitles have such a huge impact? Certainly this helps in cases where the viewer is hearing impaired or speaks a different language from what the audio is presented in, but eMarkter notes that most of the targets of B2B marketers are in their office most of the day without their sound turned on.

Not a bad point to consider. eMarketer says viewing of videos on mute is expanded 20-fold with the addition of subtitles.

For those already in the online video game, these probably aren't statistics that should be ignored. If nothing else, subtitles make your videos more accessible. A way to turn them on/off is probably the best way to go, because many people would still prefer to view their videos without any added clutter on the screen.

Google To Eliminate 200 Positions

Google represented something of a bright spot during the past few months; while other tech companies made layoffs, the search giant just slowed its hiring spree. Unfortunately, Google became part of the downsizing pattern this afternoon, announcing the elimination of 200 sales and marketing positions.

Omid Kordestani, Google's senior vice president of global sales and business development, didn't sound happy about the move in a post on the Official Google Blog. Kordestani wrote, "Making changes of this kind is never easy - and we recognize that the recession makes the timing even more difficult for the Googlers concerned."

There are a couple of potential silver linings, though. First, from a business perspective, it may be that Google isn't suffering from the effects of the recession. Although he mentioned misleading growth trends, Kordestani claimed, "In some areas we've created overlapping organizations which not only duplicate effort but also complicate the decision-making process. That makes our teams less effective and efficient than they should be."

Then, the exec - who has declined bonus payments and equity awards - promised that Google is trying to shuffle people around instead of fire them. Plus, outplacement support and severance packages will be available for those who actually leave.

Google's making the best of a bad situation, at least.

New YouTube Call to Action Works Well for Non-profits

This week YouTube launched a call-to-action feature for its non-profit partners, allowing them to include in-video clickable ads leading to their web sites. Apparently they are quite effective, because in one day, one of the partners raised $10,000 using one.

Of course it probably helps that the video was featured on YouTube's home page. The video can be seen here:

The call to action in this particular video overlay says, "Give a person clean water. 100% of you gift directly funds water wells" and links to the proper donation page.

"The response from the YouTube community was overwhelming -- thanks to you, charity:water was able to raise over $10,000 in one day from the video," writes Ramya Raghavan on the YouTube Blog. "That's enough to build two brand-new wells in the Central African Republic and give over 150 people clean drinking water for 20 years!"

YouTube is encouraging other nonprofits to add a similar call to action overlay. To do, they simply need to go to "edit video" and fill out the fields in the section marked "Call to Action overlay." There, users can add a short headline, ad text, a destination URL, and upload an optional image. The overlay will appear every time someone watches the video.

Google Says It Helps Newspaper Websites

Google says it does not misappropriate newspaper content and actually helps them by driving traffic to their Web sites.

"We drive traffic and provide advertising in support of all business models -- whether news sources choose to host their articles with us or on their own sites, and whether their business model is ad-supported or based on subscriptions," wrote Alexander Macgillivray, Google's associate general counsel for products and intellectual property, on the Google Public Policy Blog.

"In all cases, for news articles we've crawled and indexed but do not host, we show users just enough to make them want to read more -- the headline, a "snippet" of a line or two of text and a link back to the news publisher's website."

The blog post comes after The Associated Press announced yesterday it was working on system to protect its content from being misappropriated online.

Macgillivray said some readers, journalists and users wondered if the AP's latest announcement was directed at Google.

"The answer is that it doesn't appear to pertain to Google since we host those articles in partnership with the AP," Macgillivray wrote.

"We announced that partnership in 2007 as part of an experiment in hosting articles on our site. In hosting agreements such as this, we pay news agencies and display the entire text of articles."

Macgillivray went on to defend Google's actions concerning newspaper Web sites. "Once a reader is on the newspaper's site, we work hard to help them earn revenue. Our AdSense program pays out millions of dollars to newspapers that place ads on their sites, and our goal is that our interest-based advertising technology will help newspapers make more from each click we send them by serving better, more relevant ads to their readers to generate higher returns."

Google maintains that its practice follows U.S. copyright law and that newspapers that disagree with fair use can ask to have their content removed from its index.

Online Journalists Optimistic About Future

Online journalists are more optimistic about the future of their profession than those who work in traditional media, according to a new survey by the Online News Association and the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism.

A majority of those surveyed (57%) say the Internet is " changing the fundamental values of journalism." The biggest changes, the respondents said, were a loosening of standards (45%), more outside voices (31%) and an increased emphasis on speed (25%).

For the most part, online journalists say they have been spared the kinds of staff cutbacks seen in traditional media in 2008. Many (39%) reported staff increases compared with a year earlier. Another third said their staff levels have remained the same. Less that a quarter (23%) saw staff decreases.

When it came to revenue, 39 percent of respondents were "very confident" that online news would "find a profitable and self-sustaining revenue model, while 43 percent were somewhat confident. Only 11 percent were "not too" confident.

Their comments reflected more stubborn optimism than a clear plan about the future. Ass the editor of an engineering Web site put it," It's a difficult environment for journalists with the double whammy of the Internet changing the game and a god-awful economy. We soldier on."

When asked what would likely be the most important form of revenue in three years, the majority (65%) of online journalists name advertising. Thirty-two percent cited display advertising, which has been the biggest source of online news revenue, 19 percent named search ads and 14 percent video ads.
